Oregon State Giving Out Free Tickets: Highlights Lack of Interest

Link to the article.

While this comes off as “OSU is showing appreciation for giving out free tickets”, the truth of the matter is they’re embarrassed by the lack of (a) ticket tales, which are down significantly compared to last year and (b) the empty stadium. We’re to the point of the year that you can’t blame it on the student section.

So, no, OSU isn’t being nice. They’re being desperate.

It’s a good thing, don’t get me wrong. Having people in the stands ups our odds of a win. But I don’t like how the article is spinning OSU to be saints here; the reality is they’re trying to make up for past sins. The bad HC hires, the bad AD hires, poor merchandise deals, etc. Nothing four free tickets shouldn’t fix, eh?

  1. First for free tickets.

Wait a minute, complimentary tickets to season ticket holders. Exactly the people who need them….
Why not go with the womens basketball model and maybe hand them out to pop Warner and middle school football teams on a first come first serve basis? It’s not like its last minute. They have 9 days to hand them out.

    • If I’m reading between the lines in the article, it sounds like they’re starting to discount single game tickets and ticket packages to try to move inventory. Some season ticket holders must have complained because single game tickets are cheaper than season ticket discounts, so they’re throwing them a bone.

    • Oh, how I miss Jack. Your mention of womens basketball would have set him off, complete with a lecture on the shortcomings of the womens game compared to the mens. He never seemed to appreciate the emphasis on fundamentals, teamwork, and the “feel good” family aspect of Rueck’s program.

Winning has reduced the need for ticket promotions for WBB, it can do the same for FB.

One promotion held by WBB falls into an entirely different category though. The annual Beavers Beyond the Classroom event brings over 8,000 youngsters into Gill on a Fall morning. This year it will be held on November 21 for a game vs Southern Utah. If you know of an elementary or middle school teacher, you might mention this to them. My math teaching daughter organized the trip for her middle school for the first time last year and arranged a campus tour after the game, they are set to go again this year. Suffice it to say, a great experience for some students who might otherwise never be exposed to a university campus.

    • When I worked for Corvallis Parks and Rec, OSU would donate tix and the flag football coaches wouldn’t hand them out to the kids and instead sell them for cash on Craigslist.

  2. How does OSU determine attendance? Ok St was reported at over 31k and Cal Poly was 33.5k yet Reser looked as empty as it was in the old Parker stadium days when they drew less than 20k.

  3. They’ve been giving away complementary tickets for years now. I have season tickets and been offered many free tickets in the past. Offered passes to the terrace, club seats etc.

The season ticket holder still has to accept and then find people who want to go for this to work. It’ll probably have little to no effect.

  4. If you consider that fact that college football has sold out to the television networks and almost all games are televised, then this is nothing more than a call for extras. The Beaver athletic department does not want to broadcast a punt sailing across an acre of empty aluminum bleachers.

I think extras in LA are paid scale and provided access to craft services. Watch for that next.

  5. They should just offer 2 for 1 tickets, while supplies last, for certain sections in the stadium. Something’s gotta change. That place has been pretty empty the last 2 games.
I was up in the upper deck towards the VFC endzone last weekend and there was somebody down on the terrace playing cornhole(on the opposite side of the terrace) and it was so quiet, I could actually hear the sound of his bean bags hitting the board from up there.

Students returning will help for Stanford, but I’d imagine weather will start impacting attendance after that.

    • Something’s gotta change.

      A good team.

That lunatic who was stalking me yesterday said he had friends in the AD. I said, “My condolences” or something like that, and he freaked out because he claims they’re doing an awesome job. They know more than me because their in the AD. Okay…they might know more about how to create the worst program in D1, but that’s about it.

      Smith’s hot seat: 3.5/10
Entire athletic department’s hot seat: 9.5/10

  6. I’ve got a great fan promotion idea… Win some games and play good defense. The emotion of a being at a game live exceeds anything you will experience watching on tv when a team wins. Win games and Reser will rock again.

  7. My folks gave me their free tickets they got. A decent idea, more butts in the seats is always better. Sure winning would cure all but honestly at this stage tailgating and catching up with friends and family is better than the game.

  8. I’ve been going to games since the early 80’s. Graduated from OSU in 90’s and continued my support through early 2000’s when DE turned the program around and it led to Reser renovation. Fan support was great but Bob D seemed to take it for granted and very little was done to improve game experience for fans. Soon after graduating from OSU, my family moved to Seattle area but we continued to buy season tickets and make the long trek to Corvallis 5-6 times per season. It was frustrating to see the lack of promotion after Reser/Parker was renovated and the team was winning. Despite the fact the team was winning and fan support was high, we rarely sold out. I watched season ticket holders begin to let the seats go due to a lack of appreciation from the school… for instance, our family repeated requested to be moved closer to the field and it was clear seats were available to move us but instead of moving us down, those tickets were continually given to new season ticket holders. The final straw came when friends of ours purchased season tickets at a discounted rate in the same section as us 20 rows lower and were not making any contributions/donations to the athletic program like our family had for years. At that time, we decided it was not worth the long drive and investment to sit in crappy seats at a higher cost than bandwagon fans especially when Riley was beginning to turn the program into a soft team that couldn’t make adjustments. Occasionally I make it to a game but the overall atmosphere is depressing and at this point I’d rather watch the game on FB. Kind of sad they’ve resorted to handing out free tickets and I agree, it’s a desperate reaction to a long history of incompetence.

    • My last game in person was civil war last year. No doubt the most depressing game experience I’ve ever seen at the stadium. Rain and wet, half full crowd, game was basically over by the time I got to my seat. Plus the new alcohol policy makes the lines for the urinals half a mile long. It’ll take some big W’s to get me back inside the stadium.

      • That’s one nice thing about the empty stadium. No waiting in line to pee.
Although, for some reason, getting food still takes forever despite the lack of fans purchasing food.

        • And woe be unto you if you find yourself in the beer AND food combo line! Holy shit, missed almost a quarter of the Okie state game for one pass through.

        • I’m surprised because the concessions is where all the fans go to binge eat away the depressed feelings from having to watch the game live. If I wanted to spend $20 or so on food, I’ll stay at home and watch the game. That’s also the mentality beaver fans have as well.

  9. Screams of desperate to me. Mix of appeasing grumpy season ticket holders and trying to get more people at the games in the hope they buy tickets someday.

Addressing the structural issues with going to live games might be a better move. I’ll go ahead and represent the voice of the 30 year olds with multiple kids. Going to games with young kids is hard, you rarely see the whole thing, can’t really drink or tailgate easily and then you can top it off with long drives. Leaving the kids home usually requires a sitter of some kind which will cost as much as the other costs for actually going. I doubt it would ever actually happen but the only way my wife and I both go to a game for the next 5 years or so is if they had daycare on site during the game. Otherwise we can just record it and watch at home and save plenty of cash and tears.

    • An onsite daycare is actually a pretty good idea. They could count the kids towards attendance figures without them taking up a seat.
And the daycare could be partially staffed by interns in the child development program.

        • ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
THIS isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a lack of response from the athletic department. The product on the field, especially for FB, isn’t nearly good enough to excuse this.

Bottom line, we are paying the AD more than most of the AD’s in the conference, the buck stops with Barnes! Any customer with any idea deserves a response, even a canned refusal to change.

      • As a parent, I like that idea. Wondering if the liability would be too much. I’d even pay some money if they offered the daycare options like $5-$10 a kid or something affordable. The kids zone is cool but you have to be down there with the kids. At least they added tvs. I do like that you can check in strollers and bags now outside of the stadium. We used it last weekend and it was pretty easy, similar to a coat check.

  10. Soapbeav bros, your packages both arrive tomorrow. Let the bar sit at least 5 days (safe to use now, but the bar will harden and last longer if you do this) to allow final curing. It will shrink a little in this time, the pine tar scent will calm down, and conditioning properties will arise. If you use it right away it might be slightly drying and also the bar will be used up faster because it’s not 100% cured. Usually I don’t ship until fully cured, but since these are samples and I had the free time earlier in the week I sent them out.

  11. We often hear of “coach speak” but, is there much “athlete speak”? Eggers reports this from Hamilcar Rashed Jr., hope it’s genuine:

“I love Coach Bray,” he said. “He has taught me so much. In one year, I learned more from him than I had throughout my whole career in high school and my first two years here. It’s been a game-changer. I see why so many linebackers he has coached have made the NFL.”

And this on leaving AZ to come to Corvallis, “This has been a good place for me to go to school. It’s a big change from Arizona. I can actually focus on football and not have to worry about the distractions.”

BTW, Hamilcar leads the league in TFL’s and sacks.

More on other LB’s and on injuries in the piece, but no mention of Morris.

  12. Story nobody will discuss is the HUGE list of NCAA violations. I understand you all likely want to put a positive spin here but beavs could be headed for some serious sanctions.

We DO NOT need this type of smear campaign happening! Weird probably let’s face it gay coach who breaks rules and has no discipline is not a good sell for recruits.

“The year you were born, Oregon State won a second tier bowl game” doesn’t translate.

I just KNEW that Smith was a trash hire!¡¡!!!

    • Non-story. They’re just “secondary violations” which are minor offenses every program gets every year and they didn’t get more than any other major program. I do believe it’s more than we’ve had in the past. A lot of these are just confusion over rules with social media, the constantly changing calendars, etc.

If anything these are a GOOD sign that we’re actually trying to recruit. That’s a big step up from the GA days.

    • You’re just sad mariota is washed up and not going to make it in the league. He did last longer than any of your other high qb draft picks. Have a good day uncle Phil’s assistant to the secretary.

      • What’s the over/under on how many more the Ucks have committed? Lol… Gotta love these UO trolls… They are feeling real insecure this year… Frustrating year when you have all the talent but still will finish third at best in the PAC 12 because of poor coaching… I guess that means no natty?

    • Amazing 5 of the top 10 from the two schools here. I don’t see Slocumb as worthy of a top 7 pick but what do I know about the WNBA. I didn’t watch a lot of WBB but when I did she was turnover prone and doesn’t seem to have a very good outside shot for a point guard. Go BEAVS!

      • It’s gonna be interesting to see how Slocum does this season. Will her game more closely align with Rueck’s approach?
Now Pivec, there is a player who fits perfectly and seems to do everything right. Tall order, but I’d love to see her put two (or more) L’s on princess sabrina!

    • Interestingly(?), I’ve seen a couple of tweets/retweets from players who played for Canham that were pumping him up and talking about what a great coach he is.

Makes me wonder if those are organic or somewhat scripted.

I actually helped Canham recently, not exactly a warm and fuzzy guy. But neither is Yeskie. I also tend to give those types of people their space and not press, Corvallis is a small enough fish bowl, being ‘that guy’ in this small town I figure they need some breathing space occasionally.

  13. Ole Miss in the heart (…or ass) of SEC country with about 75% full stadium. Very telling playing on a Saturday midday game against a P5 Cal team — where are the fans??

  14. When Riley bailed for Nebby, my top 2 hopefuls were Wilcox and Leech in that order, and we instead got Andersen….. man that dude set us back and those 2 voices listed have made some nice looking programs. Life of a beaver

  15. Neither Oregon nor Stanford look good. Oregon is fast, but that’s about it. Not physical at all. Stanford has no passing game. Both will probably look like world beaters vs the Beavs, though.

  16. Speaking of bad SEC teams and Oregon St tie-ins, Brent Brennan and his San Jose boys are handing it to Arkansas on the road 17-7 with about four minutes before halftime. Despite Arkansas being bad, it would still be a signature win for him.

  17. I have to say it is enjoyable watching the Chipster getting his ass run out of the stadium week after week. The game has passed him by quicker that it did Riley.

  18. Based on the limited action I’ve seen…UCLA, ASU, and Stanford are winnable.
All three will probably start redshirt freshman QBs vs us who dominate in their first game and turn those teams’ seasons around.

  19. No Pac-12 teams are going to get into the playoff, are they? With WSU going down tonight, no team in the conference looks good enough to break through the pack and get a spot.

  20. I think UCLA holds two of the Top 5 greatest comebacks of all-time with this one and Texas A&M a few years back. The Beavs used to hold the record back in the early ’80s with their 28 point comeback against Fresno St. The college game has changed as these large comebacks have become prevalent in recent years.

    • Thanks! Comment at 1:10 about UCLA defense and blitzing is pure gold.
Best comment from viewers …….”I wanted him to say we Coug’d it.”

  21. Finished destined for war, its a good read, sobering. The author does get preachy at the end. I’m shocked to say this, but Trump is doing whats needed. This trade war has wiped out a lot of my income unfortunately still doing ok, but nothing like before. Hopefully my industry will decouple from China. What was the other book? thanks

    • Hey nice. The other book is “The 100 Year Marathon” (this one is better than Destined for War IMO). There’s also a good one called “Poorly Made in China”.

I agree…Trump has to get off us China for our own good. It’s going to lead to a nasty war and a lot of poverty. I support US goods whenever I can. What industry are you in?

      • Fortunately the majority of the materials I use were already domestically produced, mainly aluminum and stainless raw materials. All of the sanitary finish stainless tube is US made.

      • Is there any evidence that the tariffs have helped in this regard? All I’m reading is that importers are eating the tariffs or passing them along, or Chinese companies are moving production to Vietnam, etc. to circumvent duties.

Chinese companies making stuff in other countries is just as bad. They’re still taking advantage of unlimited money printing+no impetus for profitability.

        • No not really.
We actually need to make the stuff here for it to be any benefit. A tariff is just a tax, so we’re getting taxed more on Chinese goods. Whether we pay that or the importers pay it neither helps the US.

I don’t know if I’m correct in saying Trump has to get us off China. We have to get ourselves off China somehow. That’s more accurate. Whether it’s Trump, someone else, or the people just stop buying those goods.

          • I’m not a fan of the red hat guy, but in this regard, he may be right. Those taxes/tariffs/higher costs for Chinese goods may help wean US consumers off of Chinese goods and/or make American made goods more financially appealing.
