  1. I posted this in the prior thread, but since it’s important I will report here:

Regarding Les Miles, I spoke with a donor/source who actually spoke to him on the phone. Said Miles would have taken the job in a heartbeat and added:

“The main donors and the influential coaches and the admin‘s here at OSU all had themselves convinced that he wasn’t a good fit. I tried to convince people myself and they just didn’t want to hear it. I talked to him On and off for a couple of weeks, one time on the phone for an hour and a half, he asked all about the stadium the facilities the town etc.… And it stopped when he was informed that there was absolutely no interest. I talked to him at length on the phone about OSU and the opportunity here. He would of taken it in a heart beat. Swear on my child’s life.”

  2. WHY IS ANYONE THINKING WE LOSE THIS? WE ARE THE DAM BEAVERS THERES NO WAY WE LOSE TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE THEIR PLAYERS SHOULD BE AWFUL COMPARED TO OURS WE SHOULD WIN 51-0!!!

  3. We’re not losing. The far more likely scenario is an uninspired, too-close win. I don’t know what the spread is on this one, but if I bet, I’d take CP to cover

  4. Watched Cal Poly v Weber State last week.

Weber St kinda out-classed them as an upper-echelon Big Sky team, but Cal Poly isn’t the worst FCS team we’ve ever faced (or lost to at home).

They run a true triple-option with a WR/RB playing QB as opposed to an actual QB that can also run, but I wouldn’t put it past us to make him look like a heisman candidate.

As the game wore on Weber St dominated the line of scrimmage and was churning out 15+ yard runs up the gut at will and ran away with it for something like 300 yards on the ground.

This should be a lot like the Southern Utah game last year, although Cal Poly does have marginally better talent. The offensive line should dominate and Jefferson/Pierce should make it a no-contest and take the pressure off Luton to do anything but hit wide-open receivers on routine looks, although we know he struggles with just that.

If they find some way to lose I think you’ve sadly gotta put JS and co on notice as potentially being a total bust as a Pac-12 coaching staff. I didn’t expect to see a big jump in Year 2 just because we are still so talent deficient on the D side. But what I can’t stomach is further regression from Year 1. They did a decent job of stabilizing the program and weathering the storm last year, but this year some warts are showing, enough so it could derail any chance of building the program before they can even get started.

With Gaia’s immaculate blessing, 42-17 Beavs.

  5. Glass half full- Beavs 54-10 Gebbia starts and permanently takes over as the starter, season begins for real

Glass half empty- Beavs scrape by with Luton playing 4 uninspired quarters to do it, Gebbia begins transfer paperwork

Glass empty- Beavs lose, Luton plays all 4 quarters, D can’t stop a wing T offense, JS is seeking MR out on the sidelines for guidance, Gebbia transfers out on Sunday morning

Probably the last one at the rate this ship is sinking…

  6. Beavers should rn 70% of the time, use clock, clearly win a snoozer, with Jefferson and Pierce will be wishing the field was 200 yards long so they could pad their stats…

A terrible Beavers run D is very thin at LB, so C-P will get yardage in chunks and a Cal Poly player will be their league’s Player of the Week.

The bad part is Luton will go into league play as the starter and the program and most of the fans will think everything is hunky dory. I’m still angry that Gebbia didn’t take over in the 3rd last week and come into this game as the starter. The perfect transition point handed to Smith and and fucked it up.

    • While that obviously sucks, it will be interesting to see what Pierce does with more carries, and hopefully Tyler. I don’t understand Baylor getting reps instead of Pierce….

  7. Jefferson didn’t look like himself last game, was hobbled. I wondered why they didn’t put in pierce more in the second half, could have been a game changer.

  8. Perfect corner throw to Hodgins, perfect catch and gets both feet down.

Pierce looks good too. A little worried that the OLine is only winning the battle about half the time, though. How many years have we been talking about the line not being great?

  9. Decent first drive, although we look a bit slow/passive up front. Pierce being Pierce is nice.

Luton located the ball well but I hate how he locks on and telegraphs with his body even when we aren’t being challenged and he’s just hanging out back there.

  10. Ok might actually have to fire Tibesar after year 2.

They look passive and clueless. Very poorly coached. Get #33 Moore off the field (and he’s supposed to be our best).

    Embarrassing.

  11. Moore is looking around like he can’t believe what’s going on. What’s with Pierce starting, is this make-up for the idiocy of the last game?

  12. OK, so OSU has an SEC quality back who torched Ohio State for a couple of 80 yard TD runs, but we’re going to have Luton to Hodgins all day…

      • That throw and catch were what keep giving Luton playing time…not that Gebbia couldn’t make it, but that is why they forgive Luton’s weaknesses…

I think an NFL team would be smart to sign Pierce. He’s not very big, but there’s not much mileage on those legs and he can make impact plays.

  13. Score is decent, but not a fan of the play calling. I think this is a great chance to work on the run blocking mentality of the O-Line, lots of passing with the line standing up and moving backwards.

  14. Lol how embarrassing for that DB

Also Luton. Just fkn step into it with your giant 6’7 frame and throw a proper deep ball that doesn’t sail or flounder I’m begging you.

  15. Tibs should be pissed if the Mustangs are allowed to get points in the last 1.5 minutes of the half.
Critical time as shown, again, last week.

  16. Yikes. Cal Poly D quit and gave us easy mode there.

Luton still with the flat all-arm under-thrown ball. Big shitty miss on a routine screen the play before. He’s so frustrating even when he plays well and puts up good numbers.

  17. I don’t want to see a second-half let up like last year against Southern Utah. I’m in the mood for a complete FCS thrashing to make a statement.

  18. Glad they are finally getting some deep throws. Almost none against OK state or Hawaii. Was thinking with all the talk of speed of Irish and Fleming’s, you need to bring Hodgins across the middle of post to get the safety to shadow and send Irish or Fleming’s over the top.

  19. Really like the business-like behavior of Baylor. Gets up and gives ball straight to ref after ripping off some yardage. Same way with the TD.
Defense playing much better, and disciplined — would like to see more forced punts, but overall can’t complain.
Looking forward to watching Gebbia, let’s go!!!

  20. Bad look for Gebbia throwing it off an oline’s helmet lol. Luton would have try pretty hard to pull that off, although wouldn’t put it past him.

  21. I’m curious why the quarterback isn’t getting laid out every option play. Seems like in the day they taught us that the QB pays to act like a RB…we just collapse and look at him, waiting for him to pitch the ball.

    GWH

PS: we can’t pull off a three-man front.

    • Someone should have contained on every play with the 3-4 it’s a LB on the strong side usually. They arnt pressing the QB. They’re trying to anticipate the pitch and losing at it. It’s more bad discipline then anything else.

    • The D is young so theoretically they can grow. Not sure they did.
They did a good job containing that qb, but that’s likely because cal poly is a glorified hs team.
At least the first game of conference play is now more interesting, and we have 2 weeks to improve and prepare. Confidence gained is the biggest takeaway…

      • “Confidence gained is the biggest takeaway”
And not just confidence of the players. Coaches now have seen game performance vs an opponent (yes, lower leverl) rather than on the practice field. Gamers vs Practice Hero’s.

        Champ, Musgrave, several others

  22. Good win.
Convincing when I wasn’t expecting that.
Not much to take away from this in terms of player performance…cal poly so bad it’s hard to judge anyone. Oregon might beat up Stanford for us which will help.

    • Our front seven on D was better than I expected. Good assignment D, good reads, especially in the first half. They didn’t hurt us with the run game. The secondary – not as good a feeling.

But some confidence going into the Stanford game, who got waxed today, and also got torched by USC who is in OT with BYU

    • It’s not like USC is great. They squeaked by Fresno at home and blewout Tree…who was overrated, going down something like 38-7 at the half at UCF.

  23. Nicebeaver. Crapzano is reporting USC transfer WR Devon Williams was at the game today. I believe he was the #1 WR in the 2018 class. Any info ?

  24. I missed the second half. Did Gebbia come in the 3rd or the 4th quarter. I see a TD and an INT so I don’t know what to think about it…

Edit: read the comments. It was so-so. Not enough to take over starting duties.

    • He looked sharp aside from the one deflected pass. He didn’t have the same opportunities to put up numbers that Luton had in the first half. Haven’t seen the deep ball from him yet but otherwise he looks more than competent to take the reigns.

      • Deflected pass? He threw into the helmet of a standing lineman, no deflection at all… the jury is still out imo, I am not seeing the next coming of Aaron Rodgers yet

        • Hes better, Luton throws over and behind his receivers. Thank god he has hodgins to make up for his lack of accuracy. Gebbias mechanics are 100x better also. He did throw one into a lineman head, luton has done that on several occasions in the past also.

        • wait until his 6th year to pass judgement….if his passes are getting deflected by D lineman and he locks onto one receiver and is inconsistent between halves and/or games, and is poor on third downs, THEN weigh in…

        • He’s better? Show me the evidence… from what I’ve seen he’s got some twinkle toes.. hasn’t gone deep yet… throws picks into his own linemen… haven’t seen enough to have an opinion… yet here you all are saying he’s so much better… film ain’t shit, it’s about what you actually do on the field

          • Luton’s career consists of 15 games, not starts, 61% completion percentage, 3188 yards, and 22 TDs with 8 ints. Statistically one of the 10 best QBs ever at OSU. But Gebbia is better based on mop up time in 2 games.

          • Quit pulling up stats… it’s all about game film from high school, that’s all that matters apparently… Mechanics > real world stats

          • Sorry you lost your sight, if you cant see from the little gebbias played so far, then I dont know what to tell you. Luton cant hit a reciever in stride, 55 pass competitions this season and hes done it once, one time. Luton mechanics suck it looks like a rolly fingers wind up and some sort of javelin throw combined. He has zero touch on the ball and I’m not sure the guy can throw a spiral (he might, but from the few replays I watched not one was a spiral). Gebbia is superior in all aspects from what I’m seeing, and leaving out the passing part the fact that he can run is a bonus (twinkle toes? Get the fuck out of here). Luton would be way better if he could run, he did one time and colorado state all but decapitated him, but then again if you run like a wounded giraffe that happens some times.
And I was all for the new and improved luton to come in and play as long as he is better. Only nothing is new and nothing is improved it’s the same old luton. Big deal he lead the team against the sister of the poor from cal poly. Hes not any better then last season, contrary to what the fake news media told us.

          • These guys are bored and trying to bait us into a Luton debate.

Gebbia is the better player, but he’s not going to get a chance to prove that this year barring injury. So until then these guys will look correct, even though they’re not.

          • I’ve yet to see the dude take a hit and make a throw (hence the twinkle toes reference)… happy feet makes for a good movie not a good QB but see what you want.. he needs to develop, glad he’s not starting… he can be good but needs some time

          • The problem is luton is no better then last year, we were sold a bill of goods that he was better, that is false. Why play him? I dont give a shit about feel good stories of redemption. Hes not helping the team improve, everytime he takes a snap its garbage time. Where as playing gebbia helps since he’ll be here 2 more years. Why not give him an extra year to improve?
Please give me a reason why playing luton now is better then developing gebbia going forward?

          • Wait so now it’s not that Gebbia is better than Luton, but it’s he should play more to improve? I would hate you as a coach… if It was my last last year as senior, I would want the person starting who gave me the best chance of winning… it’s obvious they aren’t going to a bowl game and it has nothing to do with the Quarterback… I am still trying to figure out what Gebbia has done better that would have made a difference in any outcome this year… he turned the ball over against Cal Poly… literally no pressure, the game was out of hand and he threw it into the line… Regardless of what you think it’s about winning games, and that’s exactly why Luton is starting

  25. Looks like North Texas was at least semi-competitive with Cal? Lost 23-17, though don’t know if NT put points up late against back ups.

    PAC not looking so great.

    • Was just coming to Chuck’s defense and trying to put some perspective on what are fair expectations for an OSU QB. Besides, you need a couple non conformists to make
up for the loss of Jack. Have you forgotten how sideways those post game threads would get after he mixed his meds with booze?

  26. Ducks passing more than running, going for it on 4th down, when the game is out of reach already.

Beavs had Gebbia pass only 5 times, all of them short, in the last quarter and a half

    • Interesting comparison. Luton’s skillset would probably have more value in that era than it does today. DA had a big time arm but he struggled in college with touch and accuracy. He was a career 50% passer and averaged 1-2 ints per game. I was at the game at UW where they lost because Anderson couldn’t stop turning it over. I think he had 4 or 5 picks that day. DA also took sacks like Mannion. For every beautiful play he made there’d be another that would drive you crazy. Insert Luton in that era and I think he would have been fine.

  27. The Devon Williams (USC transfer, 4*/5* WR recruit in 2018 class) visit to Oregon State today is a nice potential get for the Beavs.
Story goes that he was originally supposed to visit both OSU amd Oregon today, but he stayed long at OSU amd skipped the oregon leg of the trip.
The Nemec telling of the story sure makes it sound like Nemec is bugged he didn’t go to oregon yet, but that there’s plenty of time and it’s “early” in his recruitment.
But the part of the story Nemec isn’t telling is Williams would risk losing an extra year of eligibility if he doesn’t sign with a school before fall enrollment is over. Similar to last year when Gebbia/Gumbs/Roberts/Lindsey ended up here, OSU could also benefit from being one of the few schools that hasn’t already started fall term yet(oregon hasnt either) So in that sense, it is not early in his recruitment.
Anyway, worth keeping an eye on, because i dont think Williams will be on the market for more than a couple of weeks, and OSU actually has a decent shot at landing him.

  28. Champ’s catch is up to 511k views on the Twitter and it made it onto ESPN plays of the day. He did great in his interview too. I’m happy for the kid. People on the Twitter are saying his mantra is “it’s the size of the fight in the dog”. Overall it’s great exposure for the whole team to people that wouldn’t normally tune in to OSU football.
    PS
I’m with angry on benching Luton. We need to work on the future. Coach Smith can’t get out of his own way in regards to this.

    • As unpopular as it would seem to keep Luton as the starter over Gebbia; the coaches aren’t looking to add experience for Gebbia to match Luton’s time on the field with this team. This staff needs more than 2 wins( FCS Cal Poly and another PAC-12 team. Luton is better this year by a smidge. With that said, the offense needs to keep improving to attract recruits on the offensive side. Meanwhile we still need a lot of help on the defensive side of the ball. So until Luton throws multiple interceptions and stalls the offense multiple times a game, we won’t see Gebbia. The less situations we put choukair in will only help his confidence and stress level as well.

      • Luton is the right choice so long as they are competing and have the opportunity to win games in the 4th quarter.

He’s the wrong choice if his warts are preventing them from being competitive or if they are the difference in otherwise close games (poor mechanics, inaccuracy, inability to execute routine throws with consistency, locking onto receivers, slow processing etc).

He’s the wrong choice if the D is non-competitive and can’t keep them in games at all, even if he is otherwise playing well.

It’s marginally complex, but not a rocket-science kind of situation.

  29. I think it would be interesting to see a true dual-threat quarterback within this system, but I don’t think it’s what Smith wants. Gebbia seems to have decent quickness, so he might be a nice compromise for next season. I don’t think Luton is coming out any time soon unless he completely implodes.
