If there’s such thing as a “good loss”, that might qualify. D stood out to me getting two stops in a row to give the offense a chance to win. I can’t think of any examples where that’s happened. We always seem to cave in those situations. Good to see.

No game-costing errors by Smith. Good to see.

What’s disappointing is it’s the same ol’ problem mediocre teams have in that they can’t get offense, defense, and ST playing together on the same night.

Overall not a painful loss. Saw some good, and if it weren’t for Nolan being completely inept, Beavs win that one.

Gotta give it to Nolan though, he does not go down easy like Luton did.

The play calling has got to be better. We have the weapons for a short passing game, but Lindgren kept calling plays that took too long to develop.

      1

as I said in the game thread, it’s as if GA’s offensive coordinator snatched Lindgren’s body. The play calling was early Luton. Emphasized Nolan’s arm strength (which is notably greater than Gebbia’s) trying to stretch the field. Late Luton was far more effective with short slants and outs.

  2. Even with Nolan not playing well.. if OSU just has Jefferson they win that game.. OSU was the first team this season to rush for over 100 yards vs UTah and they did it without their top back

    • I think they would have been pushing 175 yards if it wasn’t for those three sacks. Nolan was decent with his legs. Weird game, Utah could have been up big early, but their QB was inaccurate also. Punt return turned out to be the backbreaker, so much for Whittingham saying Covey was nowhere near 100%. He looked fast to me. Utah penalties and ineptness in the red zone kept the game closer than it could have been. I like the fight the Beavs have this year, but it would be nice to see a complete game. I don’t expect it to happen with their injuries and COVID.

Utah only played two games. Everyone was acting like their stats were all world…2 games! Really you can deduct nothing about their rush D from just two games.

That’s what’s so tough about football games (so many variables to account for and that might change the game). I think you may be right about J2 playing and the Beavs possibly winning. But then, would Utah have missed on two touchdown passes (like they did in this game)? Would Chance be more accurate with the threat of J2 in the running game? It’s all possible.

I’m curious to see how this team responds against Stanford. It will be interesting to see if WR Harrison gets on the field and can they get a platoon of some solid RBs (if J2 is not able to go). Is Lowe injured? Stanford is very beatable but it was odd to see them play as well as they did yesterday against UW (IMO).

      Go Beavs!

  3. A few thoughts:
-We were one of a handful of individual plays away from winning. Losing close games is becoming a defining characteristic of JS’s tenure. It’s kind of encouraging how many games have been close, but we have to get over the hump at some point.

-The defense is like Nick Foles. They’re only really good in the spotlight moments.

-If Tyler is truly our #3 RB, our depth is not good. I remember him being the guy whose HS tape was just him steamrolling little guys in low-level Texas ball. Last night, he didn’t seem to have any real strengths. Colletto ended the night as our leading rusher with 1 carry.

-Nolan definitely has the physical tools, but he needs to settle down. If he looks the same after 3 starts, then I’ll be ready to make a call on him.

Nolan had worse happy feet than Gebbia. Everyone was all over Gebbia for the happy feet. He didn’t look better in any way passing. Maybe slightly faster rushing.

      • Nolan has a stronger arm and he has a better burst running the ball. Top end speed seems similar to Gebbia, but that doesn’t matter as much for a QB.

Nolan was also incredibly inaccurate and looked in over his head. Gebbia looked the same way his first few starts, and the accuracy came once he calmed down. There’s no guarantee the same will happen for Nolan, but I wouldn’t write him off yet.

Gebbia is still the clear cut #1.

        • I didn’t see a stronger arm. Many of those passes were really floating…like worse than lobs. Never seen passes like that. Almost looked like they were tipped, but they weren’t.

          • 2
            2

He threw a couple bullets. First one for a perfect strike to a Ute. Second should have been an INT, but was tipped and miraculously became a TD. He was terrible.

          • The only one where his arm strength was shown was the pass late in the fourth that he threaded to Beason. Other than that, I agree that he arm looked weird like he was throwing a knuckleball instead of a fastball. Don’t know if the freezing cold weather has any impact or the fact that his hand was bleeding (at least in the fourth quarter it was) negatively impacted him.

      • If you (not the other poster who responded for you) are talking about Nolan setting his “feet” on his throws, this is incorrect. Look at the video link I’ve left. In pretty much every throw Nolan makes, he sets his feet and transfers his weight forward. In fact, he does it so pronounced, he lifts his back foot often (much like a pitcher).

BTW, “happy feet”, especially for a scrambling Qb can be perceived as someone who takes off out of the pocket (runs) too quickly!

        Go Beavs!

    • We missed Jefferson a lot but I think the true killer was losing Baylor. He’s looked good every chance he’s had, but when he went down things turned ugly. Tyler does not look good at all. In addition to having issues running, he was a huge liability blocking and caused a bunch of pass plays to get immediately blown up.

I think we win with Jefferson. But TBH I think we also win with Baylor. Agree with Angry that those two defensive stops at end of game were awesome and very encouraging. Ready to see a complete game, and also ready to see a game with a costly ST screwup!!

  4. Strange game last night. Utah handled us, but with some bad throws that should have TD’s and some boneheaded defensive penalties, they kept us in the game.

And actually, we could have actually won that game as Nolan made the wrong read on that fourth down play with about 1:45 to go. The end came crashing down and Nolan should have pulled the ball. The field was wide open as the WR cleared that side of field well. Just a terrible decision on his part to give to Tyler who looks a lot more like a scatback that a guy who can get you the tough yards between the tackles.

    • Didn’t they try to run it quickly to catch Utah off guard? Instead, it looked the Beavs were just as unready. For JS being such a risk-taker, it was a very vanilla call. It wasn’t like it was just inches. I wonder if Gebbia audibles out of something like that? Later they ran a quick out to the TE on 4th down and he was wide open.

      • Yeah. I watched that replay on the DVR about a dozen times last night to make sure I wasn’t missing something. The way Utah was playing was reminiscent of Whiskey playing the Ducks in the Rose Bowl last year. Every time, he kept, there was ample room to run wild. Utah was doing the same thing to the Beavs. Tubs and Nolan should have seen that. Huge miss on their part.

  5. Still confused why we kept trying to run up the middle over and over. Tyler ended up scoring on one of the few runs to the outside I saw. Nolan was terrible, kept throwing off his back foot and was way too slow going through his progressions. His accuracy was pathetic last night. Defense was solid imo bend but don’t break. They got a lot of crucial spots, but Nolan wasn’t ready to capitalize

    • Cause that’s what you do when the opponent wants to stack the box against a new QB? Lol. But I didn’t see the game. I only heard it from a guy who watched a video of it.

  6. Given all their faults and limitations, now well documented, it’s truly amazing the Beavs were in that game at the end. Had they somehow won, it would have been a steal, the kind of game OSU has lost many times in the past 15 years. The clear equalizer, as noted above, was Utah’s penchant for the untimely penalty, though timely for OSU.

As to the big subject everyone wants to chime in on, here’s my 2 cents worth. Nolan’s first game was not as good as Gebbia’s outing in the Civil War last year, and par with Gebbia’s first two this year (the memories of which have been obscured by Beav wins versus Cal and UO). I think we can be nearly certain that had he played last night Gebbia would have performed better than Nolan did. (We didn’t get that first-start-catching-lightning-in-a-bottle game that everyone we plays gets routinely–WSU this year.) Still, I have the feeling that with more game time exposure Nolan has a far higher upside.

  7. “with more game time exposure Nolan has a far higher upside.”……I sure hope so! And gotta add (as 26 has pointed out) that he’d be closer to his true “upside” with JJ at his side.

On a less depressing note, USA Today gives Cristo some ink; and a seldom stated dose of reality for Phils Plock of Phools.
“Until Cristobal starts winning all the games in which he has more talent, it’ll be hard to square the reality with the hype. “

Youngest team in the nation by far. 45+ true freshman or redshirt freshman. If you don’t think experience matters, then you don’t know sports. Lost two games by 7 points in the last two weeks despite the youth. New QB, entire new O-line and new secondary and LBs due to multiple opt-outs. Perfect storm and frustrating but this year doesn’t matter much anyway unless you’re in the SEC, Clemson or ND. Sportswriters don’t consider that, they just need to write about something.

    • Whats the reason for the mass exodus from there this summer (transfers)? If its covid or something else. Covid needs no explanation.

    • Glad you are continuing to exchange views with Hank.
-What are the main differences in Stanford’s play between the losses vs UofNike and Colorado and the wins against Cal and UofW?
-How does he gauge the effect of being forced to stay away from Santa Clara County?
-I have a lot of respect for Shaw, does Hank think he is at the top of his game this year?

    • question: how well known was it in the Stanford circle of fans that Shaw’s brother was in such dire straits or the coach’s role in his comeback?

    • also: Could Shaw have rehabilitated Stanford football without the head start Harbaugh gave him? What’s Harbaugh’s legacy reputation there now?

  8. FUN FACT:
Josh Worden points out that, “Chance Nolan joins the elite club of “QBs who threw an interception vs Utah on their first pass at OSU”
Other members include: Lyle Moevao (2007)”……..good company.
Josh also mentions that both Moevao and Nolan are transfer QBs from junior colleges in California

    • Statistically, Nolan’s debut is in the top half of OSU QB first starts in the “modern era.” For whatever that’s worth (not much.)

      • I know it would be a hassle, BiOH, but having done so on an earlier thread can you do a revised edition of your list for this thread? It was some of the finest research this site has ever seen.

  9. MBB up 48-42 against Wyoming at half. Thompson with 13 and Hunt with 10 lead the scoring. Much better on offense than they were against Wazzu. Defense certainly needs some work although WY looks to be well coached and has some players.

  10. For the record Gebbias first games weren’t as bad as nolan’s. He at least completed some passes where as nolan barely did. I’m not so sure the play calling was as bad as some think. I noticed a few times where there was a guy wide open on as check down and nolan went for the deep ball. At the end there I just wanted him to scramble every play because that’s all that he was successful at. I don’t think that nolan is bad but he was having an awful game and his accuracy was horrendous. I would’ve liked to see Moore in there in the 4th or even halfway through the third. Not saying he would light it up but I would think he could complete some wide open passes. Hopefully nolan settles down and can bounce back.

  11. Ethan Thompson hurts more than helps. He is leading us in scoring only because he shoots so much. He is now 4 for 13.
He does nothing else to help. Tinkle needs to play the younger players because Thompson is not going to get better. He is
the same player now that he was as a freshman. This game here is a game that a experienced player like Thompson would take
over and win it for OSU but he is not that player who can lead a team to win.

    • And Hollins is transferring. Players just don’t get better at Oregon State. It’s really odd – figured Tinkle would develop the program into one where you take underrecruited players and by the time they are seniors, they can hang with the best teams in the conference – but it’s just not the case with the Beavs. I’m guessing less than 50 percent of freshman signees have stayed through their senior years or left with a diploma – that’s going to kill the APR. Robinson at least graduated players.

  12. 2

Two games in a row, had a chance to take the last shot down by 1. We rush a bad shot and miss. So stupid I don’t understand it at all.

  13. Beavs do not have a player that can lead them and will them to win. Thompson can’t. Reichle can’t. They do not have
that player. Hunt might be and maybe one of the other new guys but we are counting on Thompson and he is not a
    take charge type player.

  14. Pathetic, they blow an 11 point second-half lead. Ethan missed so many open shots. Reichle travels and throws a poor inbound pass in the final four minutes. So much for senior leadership. Hollins may have the right idea by leaving this hot mess. Alitishe seems to be regressing already after looking like a world-beater against Cal. I guess it’s hard to stay sharp standing around watching Thompson go one on one. And we could end up with another year of “coach’s son ball” if Thompson comes back for next season.

  15. Final score was closer than I thought.

There were a couple of challenging catches players made; some throws were simply impossible to catch.

For ppl who watched whole game, was our D working better 1st half or in 2nd half? It seemed there was a period where Utah got to dictate at will and put points up as a result of it.

    • The defense played really well in the 4th quarter and in the red zone in the first half. Much of the night that they were gashed by Utah’s running attack and passes to the TE. The Beavs seem to have a problem setting the edge on running plays. I don’t know if there is a lack of team speed or it’s players out of position?

  16. Las Vegas:
It’s gonna be interesting watching the line for next Saturday.
One book has ucks favored by 7 and another says 4.5.
Beavs open as 4 pt dogs to Tree.

  17. OT: Some odd ones in the NFL today – SEA loses to Giants at home 17-12, Giants playing with Colt McCoy at QB, NE blows out Chargers 45-0….

Aaron Rodgers needs fewest games ever to get to 400 TD passes, and does it with fewer INTs than Brees, Brady, Manning, and others. Now apparenlty 37, seems like forever since Rodgers played at CAL.

        • Herbert has zero help. Beaver like defense, no offensive line and a terrible head coach. And he will still be your NFL Rookie of the Year. Mannion thrown an NFL pass yet?

          • Zero help? how about a really good RB (Ekeler) and one of the best WRs in the game (Allen). Williams and Henry aren’t bad either. You sound a lot like all of the Duck fans that made excuses for Mariota for years while he was in Tennessee. Guess what? he went to a new team and can’t get on the field there either.

Herbert starting off great but wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up sucking ass too given track record of Duck’s NFL QBs. One hit wonder? RG3, Mariota, Winston were all great too for a season…..

          • You seem really bitter that a duck quarterback is having great success in the NFL. By no help I mean no defense and no offensive line. Which is exactly what I posted and you seem to have a reading comprehension problem. shocker. His offense of line is very porous and he got sacked multiple times yesterday. He has a cannon for an arm and when given protection he is obviously star level. Keenan Allen is great and now that they’re running back is actually healthy he should do better But he better become a very good blocker very quickly because the offense of line sucks

          • As far as Mariota is concerned he also had no help. His offensive line sucked and he had three offensive coordinators in four years at Tennessee. That spells disaster for any quarterback. Just ask any Oregon state quarterback over the last eight years and they will tell you the same thing. It’s almost as if you don’t understand sports at all

          • Haha yeah I don’t understand sports at all because I don’t agree with you. Frankly, I don’t really care what you think. Herbert is not on a bad team and he has tons of help. Last I checked you don’t need a defense to score more than zero points in a football game. Also, Mariota does in fact suck badly.

          • I’m convinced you’re an idiot. You don’t understand shit about sports. What a clown. Tons of help. Why isn’t their record better then if he has “tons of help”. What a clown. Stick to agriculture and sheep

  18. FWIW, after Utah loss without Gebbia, Jefferson, and Baylor after 1st QTR, Canzano says despite inconsistent play, the Beavers have “no quit in them,” and that makes them entertaining to watch.

In a separate article, Smith said no moral victories, they need to execute better.

  19. The Beavs desperately need another NT. It will be very concerning if they don’t sign one or get a transfer. Has anyone seen shippen play any snaps this season? I wonder if reichner will come back next season.

  20. USA Today on Cristobal:

    “FOUR MORE IN MISERY

Oregon: Ducks fans have the worst of all worlds. Every year, they have to listen to the college football media project Mario Cristobal to bigger jobs like Texas and Michigan or to eventually succeed Nick Saban at Alabama. And yet, the speculation about a bigger future for Cristobal doesn’t match the reality at Oregon, where he’s racking up at least one bad loss per year. After entering this season as the Pac-12 favorite, Oregon is now just 3-2 after a 21-17 loss to Cal. While the circumstances haven’t been ideal — the Ducks lost star quarterback Justin Herbert to the NFL and had several key opt-outs including safety Brady Breeze and offense tackle Penei Sewell — there’s a worrisome trend developing. Cristobal is 24-9 overall and recruiting like crazy, so things aren’t all bad. But there have been some head-scratching losses during his three seasons, including last November to Arizona State, which kept the Ducks out of the College Football Playoff. Until Cristobal starts winning all the games in which he has more talent, it’ll be hard to square the reality with the hype. ”

  21. USC’s defense looks good. They should be able to run the table and go to the Fiesta Bowl.

I have a feeling that the conference will shaft OSU and put the Trojans on the schedule for the 7th game.

    • 1
      2

That works for me. Sounds like a great challenge. What do we have to lose. Not like 4-3 gets us to a bowl game. Plus, we’ probably not beating Stanford anyhow

    • if USC wins the south they will play in the PAC 12 championship.. not OSU.. that’s what the first 6 games are for..to determine the champions of each division.. and then it looks like PAC 12 will then pit N2 vs S2.. N3 vs S3 etcc..

      • as of this writing, that would result in a rematch with Utah. I find it hard to believe the conference would do that, but perhaps so. With a win over Stanford, and thereby holding a tie-breaker against both Tree and the Ducks, OSU could finish 2nd in the North if UW beats UO, which I expect to happen. In that scenario, we would (seemingly) be paired with Colorado. That would be a fun game.

Also, checking around, it looks like there are only 4 bowl spots for Pac 12 teams: Fiesta, Alamo, Independence, and the Armed Forces. If the Beavs beat Stanford AND their cross-over game, I could see them squeezing into one of the last two, also presuming UW beats Oregon. In that scenario the Pac’s bowl teams would likely be SC, UW, UCLA, OSU

  22. Per request, here’s the rundown on OSU QB first starts since Canfield, with Nolan added. Funny enough, Nolan’s first start was pretty average for a Beav QB. All of these were in losing efforts except Vaz, and all were against P5 opponents except Vaz (BYU) and Luton (CSU).

    Vaz: 20-32, 332 yards, 3 TD (and a W)
    Mannion: 25-38, 244 yards
    Gebbia: 26-40, 243 yards
    Garretson: 25-40 228 yards, 3 TD
    Luton: 27-47, 304 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT
    Moevao: 15-28, 202 yards, 1 TD
    Nolan: 20-38, 202 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Collins: 9-16, 79 yards, 1 TD (crazy that he’s still playing at TT and could potentially play another year!)
    Canfield: 18-31, 131 yards, 3 INT
    McMaryion: 11-21, 151 yards, 1 INT
    Katz: 9-25, 159 yards, 2 TD
    Mitchell: 9-24, 122 yards, 1 INT

    • I’m not gonna write off Chance based on the one game. He did indeed look awful and I don’t have high hopes. At least a half dozen passes into double coverage. Little to no accuracy all night. Not much reason for hope. Bad first starts by good QBs are not unheard of though. And the happy feet and overthrowing short passes sure does seem plausible to attribute to nerves. But tough to justify the throwing into triple coverage. I doubt he overtakes a healthy Gebbia but I think Chance can bounce back and at least get to a level where he is not a net negative.

      • I think the previous stats just show that you can’t project a guy’s future based on his first start. McM and Canfield both had good college careers after struggling in their first starts when young. Canfield threw 3 INT’s! Similarly, Vaz and Garrettson didn’t go on to be all-time great OSU QB’s.

        • 1
          1

Definitely agree, however Chance’s stats could have been even worse. One of his TD passes was really a dropped pic so in a lot of ways he was worse than the stat line showed. But Utah is a tough place to play, and one game should never define any QB.

          • 1
            1

Angry: concur. Nolan was not good on Saturday; neither was Gebbia in his first two games this year. just sayin’. The question in front of us was how to compare Nolan with other first-timers and on that score he was middling.

          • Yeah, but that’s a pretty poor list of QB performances. To say Nolan was average amongst a bad sample isn’t flattering.

I would bet most programs with similar records over the last 13 years have gotten better debuts. Especially if they were playing against the Beavs.

          • go for it! I don’t disagree with Angry’s multiple game metric. Surely one needs at least two games. I mean, one of the fundamentals in geometry is that you need at least two plots on a graph to draw a line.

          • Wait now it’s four Angry? Lol… you had it to five or six on Gebbia and said the jury was still out… Now that I have you in record, it’s clear with your rule that Luton was superior to Gebbia. The first four starts of 2018 for Luton compared to Gebbias first four paint a clear picture.

    • thanks, BiOH. I appreciate the sense of collegiality. By applying an equalizing effect (for example, how many of Luton’s yards are offset by 3 picks, one of which, as I recall, was taken to the house) here’s how I segment this pool within the Gebbbia/Nolan perplex:

The best: (this being a relative consideration, I’m grading on the curve): Vaz, Mannion, Gebbia, Garretson
      Median set: Moevo, Luton, Nolan
The worst: Collins, Canfield, McMaryion, Katz, Mitchell

Conclusion: Nolan’s was a middle of the pack performance, just as you have it. The high degree of disappointment with Gebbia’s first two games this year is clearly a function of his significant under performance based upon his satisfactory first effort in 2019 versus a better team (Oregon as opposed to WSU) and with 4-5 weeks to prepare (vs. one week in 2019)

    • Doozel, I forgot about that to drop to 84. I’m wondering if Nolan get that long one early if his confidence would have been better. Might have calmed him down a bit.

  23. Random thoughts on Utah…..
Nolan really stuggled. I think we win with Gebbia playing. Defense is improving weekly.

I love the overall toughness of the team……I feel like we are better positioned and get better push in the trenches……night and day compared to the Ando years

  24. OSU QB’s ranked by first 4 games. Ranking these is a challenge, but here’s my take.

    Vaz- 57%, 999 yards, 7 TD 1 INT (3-1 with a L against Stanford)
    Gebbia- 63%, 804 yards 2 TD 3 INT (1-3 with a W against Cal)
    Luton- 61%, 853 yards 4 TD 4 INT (1-3 with a W against Portland State)
    Mannion- 65%, 1139 yards, 4 TD 7 INT (1-3 with a W against Arizona)
    Canfield- 62%, 954 yards, 5 TD 10 INT (1-3 with a W against Idaho State)
Katz- 52%, 720 yards, 7 TD 0 INT (2-2 with wins over Louisville and ASU)
Collins- 55% 581 yards 5 TD 1 INT (2-2 with wins over Weber State and SJSU)
    McMaryion- 55%, 844 yards 3 TD 5 INT (0-4)
    Garrettson- 55%, 508 yards 3 TD 1 INT (1-3 with a W against Idaho State)

Vaz’s numbers are a bit deceiving because we went run heavy with Mannion out. This allowed him to be more efficient, but he still put up good numbers against P12 competition. I gave Gebbia the nod over Luton due to strength of competition. Luton played CSU and PSU, whereas Gebbia’s were all conference games. Katz and Garrettson rank low because there were games where they just flat out sucked and we had to abandon the passing game because of it.

The guys with the most upside (Mannion, Canfield, Luton, arguably McMaryion) had good and bad, but ultimately were able to shine when they eliminated the INT’s. Gebbia kind of looks like he falls into that group.

There’s another group of guys (Vaz, Katz, Collins, Garrettson) who didn’t turn the ball over, but completely disappeared at times. They ultimately had the lowest ceilings.

Ultimately, even four games doesn’t look like enough, but it’s a better predictor than one!

    • this is interesting stuff, BiOH. Several things stand out for me. (1) Only Vaz had a winning record. (2) I think of Canfield as being the best of this bunch and he had an eye-popping 10 picks in his first four games. (3) and maybe this is the big one–in the last 15 or so years OSU has always been digging out of a hole with QB play because it’s starting out at such a low level of productivity. by my count these add up to 12-24, a .333 winning percentage, which is more than 100 points below OSU’s all time winning percentage.

      • perhaps you intended that as a throw-away line, mckalk, but it’s actually an important point. Smith’s first game, vs. UW in 98, is a classic example of a first timer just catching fire and lighting up the scoreboard. We haven’t seen it since, 22 years now, excepting Vaz in Provo. that’s quite a run of futility in itself

        • I was being a little flip as usual, but of course the head coach himself is a classic example, I think he threw for over 400 yards in a little more than a half, but as usual, the Beavs lost. Man, Smith was not an accurate passer during his career, but maybe it was a sign of times? It took him until the Fiesta Bowl to get over 50% for the year in their historic season.

    • I assume you are grabbing Lutons 2017 numbers. I think a better comparison is 2018. 2017 was a GA year, and really isn’t a fair comparison IMO. 2018 first four starts he was 96 of 145 66%, 1100 yards, 7td 2int and went (1-3, Nev,Colo,USC, Stanford)

  25. A few people were asking about OL recruiting last week. I don’t see us landing Mbow, and think the next guy they go after who hasnt been mentioned yet will be UNLV commit Anton Ambuehl.

    https://247sports.com/Player/Anton-Ambuehl-46100649/

Also, not sure what’s happening at USC and UCLA, but both teams seem to be losing commits and transfers recently.
*QB Jake Garcia decommitted from USC
*S/WR/ATH Devin Kirkwood decommitted from USC
*LB Palaie Gaoteote is transferring from USC
*WR Munir McClain hasn’t been announced yet, but I believe he is transferring out of USC(you may have seen his name in the Summer regarding a federal investigstion into improper unemployment benefits)
There will likely be more decommits and transfers to come from both schools.

I expect OSU to at least kick the tires on all 4 guys(even though we have Vidlak coming in this class, you can’t pass up on the chance to land Garcia)

Just some names to keep an eye on, but I dont have any expeftations for any of them ending up at OSU at this point.

    • USC did get a big WR commit who realized the ducks suck and decommitted from them. Garcia is now playing in Georgia so makes sense he got a lot of love now that he moved over there. I also think with this year being a free year, players are seeing the writing on the wall realizing possibly they are at the same spot on the depth chart again next season.

  26. Sounds like JJ did not test positive and maybe he could play this weekend or at least for the final game of the year. If he was exposed, then it’s at least 4-5 days before you can test again and be sure it’s a true negative.

Smith said he was in quarantine and not isolation. Isolation means the player tested positive.

    – also if I am Nick Moore, I’d transfer to a FCS school who is playing in the spring. Then if things go well, transfer back into FBS.
    – wonder if we’ll see Newell at RB if the depth is down to Tyler as the starter.
    – Gebbia injury was clearly a torn hamstring. Surgery and he’ll be ready for fall game.
    – It does seem like the Beavs have done a good job in making sure that covid exposures don’t take out entire position groups.
    – Morris’s body hates football

  27. Beav In OH mentioned it above, and I think Angry mentioned it during the game, but the look on Nolan’s face when he’s looking for the play from the sidelines is concerning. He is definitely squinting his eyes and grimacing. That’s a concern for both his eyesight and his knowledge of the playbook. It’s either hard for him to see the play, or it takes several seconds for him to comprehend what he’s seeing, or both. It’s very possible that Nolan ran the wrong play a few times which could explain some things. Anyway, it’s something to keep an eye on next game.

    • 10

Could be a nervous tick. I’ve seen guys do that before. But given how he threw the ball, him being partially blind is more likely.

        • Ha. I saw it too. I think Angry is right but who knows?! Just a nervous tick? Everyone deals with pressure differently?! I think A Machado actually asked Jonathon about the squinting and his eyesight (which could probably infer a lot of things lol) and Smith said something to the effect that he heard that too from others (claiming that he didn’t get to see the broadcast, obviously) but assures that his vision is fine. It is a good observation though. Especially with some of the missed throws and decision making.

          Go Beavs!

    • JS was asked in the press conference if eye tests are administered and he said yes. But clearly there is an issue there that will have to be addressed.

I just checked his Hudl highlights and stats. His stats are very good. 66% comp rate. The big thing is he rushed for over 1000 yards. Led his team.

I can see why he wasn’t a highly recruited guy out of high school but he has reshaped himself into a decent power 5 prospect.

The good – very accurate on short/intermediate passes. Good scrambler. Doesn’t always look to run. Extends plays.

The bad – runs fairly reckless, will go for the extra yards. Will get lit up bad in power 5 games. He’s got a weird throwing motion sometimes. Throws flat footed with just all arm from the pocket. Arm strength is good enough for JC ball. Doesn’t quite drive the ball downfield. Slight build, needs to put on 20pds.

Potential is there. Could be great in the right offense and good coaching.

Prob still take the USC guy over him though.

I’d say I did decent scouting report.

Things that Nolan needs to improve on,
    1. Don’t always need to go for the win but stay confident. He clearly had a gunslinger mentality with the downfield throws and scrambles. Check down vs downfield throws, if you find yourself going backward scrambling, throw the ball away or take the sack right there and protect the ball.
    2. Step into throws. Several were thrown all arm and flat footed.
    3. I honestly would like to see him take off if the first or second read isn’t there.
    4. Hold onto the ball. The sack/fumble sequence was weird. Ball was knocked away too easily and then he turtled. Looked odd.

And coaches, if you get 40 yards with Colletto, you may want to try it at least one more time.

    • Was watching colletto remain the leading rusher through the game; wished he knew the offense better than “jack hammer.” Does he take hand-offs?

    • Hey Bill. Agree with number 1! I think there were a few things happening there to be honest.

QBs are an interesting breed! I think for the first few deep throws Chance’s intentions were nerves mixed with wanting to “make the big play” (especially on the interception over the middle of the field). He made a similar throw (to the previous one) later in the game, the one that K Taylor miraculously caught for a TD off the tipped ball (bad decision).

I think Chase started off the game, trying to play as if he was at Saddleback again lol, and quickly saw the learning curve was much, much steeper. I have a rule about “errors”. You make one, learn from it, move on while fixing it and it becomes a great “lesson”! But, if you continue and it shows that you have not/ are not learning anything from the previous experience, then it’s a “mistake”. In that context, ya can’t make mistakes! Chance admitted post game that some of his bad throws were due to nerves (you can’t blame him for a couple) but from here I think it’s how he responds in the next game that will be telling about his mindset. Mindset is HUGE with a QB! Does he learn? Will he adjust? Can he keep and grow more confident?

Wrote a response to #2 near the bottom of the page.

3- Lindgren was saying in a recent presser, that he wanted Chance to hang in there(the pocket) a “little longer”. I’m not sure which plays he was referring to but for the most part, I was pretty impressed with his (Chance’s) natural internal clock. Most stuff was delivered on about 3 (3 seconds), which is better than holding on too long. He started to check down later in the game, which was a good sign that he was listening to his coaches and/or learning on the fly (self preservation can make you a quick learner ha ha). With your thought on wanting to see him “take off” a little sooner if #1 and 2 aren’t open I kind of agree. One thing I see from him, he is not as confident of a dropback guy than he is as a rollout (boot, rpo, move the pocket) guy. It would be nice to see them split the field in half sometimes. This means set up a zone buster (like “Flood”) to one side of the field and have a man beater on the other side (pick route, fade/out or in concept, option routes, etc). then Chance can scan and see the coverage (zone or man) and check to roll to the side that he needs for the coverage. To do this they’ll need to do some 2 by 2 (2 receivers each side) which they don’t seem to like to do as the 3 by 1 sets. This is a very simple way to get him some quick successful throws.

      4. Always! Ball security. That one play where he retreated and was sacked was a little weird! I remember him trying to dip his shoulder reverse his field (which QBs are taught to do when they especially feel backside pressure) but then he started dropping back straight again and get hit, fumbled, i think we recovered?! Either way, a guy trying to do way too much and it was out of a straight dropback which is not his strength (especially in a possible heavy blitzing down, 2nd/3rd down). Rookie mistake.

Colletto, yeah. I’ve said it before. I think Colletto should be an H-Back (hybrid TE type). Motion him for “wham” lead blocks, catch hot routes and can be a 6th/7th blocker if needed and even motion to the backfield for a carry or two. Not sure why they want to spread him so thin by having him on offense and defense. One thing about him, he does what he’s asked to do and gives good effort (IMO).

      Go Beavs!

  29. Updated going all the way back to the Smith years!

    Anderson- 63%, 1131 yards 14 TD 1 INT (4-0 against crappy non-conference teams…look at the lack of INT’s as a freshman!)
Moore- 61%, 1274 yards, 6 TD 5 INT (2-2 with wins over BSU and PSU)
    Vaz- 57%, 999 yards, 7 TD 1 INT (3-1 with a L against Stanford)
    Gebbia- 63%, 804 yards 2 TD 3 INT (1-3 with a W against Cal)
    Luton- 61%, 853 yards 4 TD 4 INT (1-3 with a W against Portland State)
    Mannion- 65%, 1139 yards, 4 TD 7 INT (1-3 with a W against Arizona)
    Canfield- 62%, 954 yards, 5 TD 10 INT (1-3 with a W against Idaho State)
    Moevao- 56%, 960 yards, 5 TD 4 INT (3-1 with a loss to Stanford)
Smith- 45%, 951 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT (1-3 with a W against Stanford; stats are averaged and x4 because I couldn’t find individual game box scores)

    • I think you have to take into account the different offensive systems and coordinators. Mike riley’s offense was complicated and the QBs sucked until a jr. Sr. Years. Mcgiven sucked but had a much easier system to learn. Erickson’s years were about stretching the field and big plays hence the low completion %.

      • Sure, but the exercise here is comparing early career to full body of work and seeing if there’s a correlation. In a theoretical ‘easy offense,’ (compared to MR’s complicated offense) you’d still expect an improvement curve.

Also, only Anderson’s numbers came under Erickson. Smith’s first four starts were under Riley.

    • Mitch Barnhart knew how to schedule. 2002’s non-conference slate: Eastern Kentucky, Temple, UNLV, Fresno State. That was good enough for 4-0 and a top 25 ranking heading into conference play.

      • That was a fun year. That payback game with Fresno State was awesome! Beavs were a very good football team that year after 2001 embarrassment! The 2003 and 2004 teams may have had (when you consider every position O and D) the best overall team ever at Oregon State IMO. That defense was insane!

        Go Beavs!

    • And McKinley should have been suspended for jerking and twisting Gebbia’s leg causing the injury. If league officials are concerned about protecting players, how this wasn’t at a minimum of a PF according to the rules…..well, let’s just agree that McKinley’s dirty tactic cost Gebbia the remainder of the season. Next time if he’s still with the ducks, I go for his knees. Just like it used to be in baseball…you hit one of my teammates, next guy up for your team…..I’m throwing high and tight. I’m rooting for McKinley to get hurt now.

  30. So recruiting question, do we sign a tiny class again next year now? And how are teams signing so many kids if there is a 95 limit next season? I’m still so confused on how this is working for everyone

    • I think I read somewhere the guys who would normally be done, but come back for the extra year of eligibility, don’t count towards the 85 scholarship limit.
We dont have a ton if guys who would fit that category however. Wonder if there’s any chance Hamilcar would come back if his draft stock falls?

      • Man that is kind of jacked. So teams with a big senior class will have say 110 scholarship guys next year? Whereas the Beavs will have like 93 give or take 1-2.

I thought it was 95 scholarships allowed next season for some reason

        • That’s how I understand it. There’s more complete info out there, but this article seems to capture it well enough. Beavs are at a slight disadvantage having a small senior class eligible to return.

          https://www.ocregister.com/2020/08/21/ncaa-grants-extra-year-of-eligibility-to-fall-sport-athletes-addresses-scholarships-in-light-of-covid-19/

“But with the decision to allow current seniors to not count against the scholarship limit in the next academic year, teams can still sign their full allotment of recruits without repercussion.”

          • Something else to consider, I dont onow the exact date it goes into effect, but the NCAA is going to start allowing everybody a 1 time transfer with no sitting period. So rosters will balance out pretty quickly if 1 team is too stacked. Talented players will want playing time

          • Hopefully Oregon state is positively affected by the new transfer rules like it has been with the portal.

Nicebeav have you heard anything about a potential NT recruit or transfer? Its pretty concerning we only have Skelton and Bennett. I think there are some young guys but they’re far too light right now.

          • I think this transfer rule relaxing hurts OSU. We had a small advantage having Fall term start so late at OSU, where guys could transfer up through mid October and still be eligible to play at OSU the following season. Now that’s possible anywhere they choose to go.

That was how we ended up with guys like Gebbia/Lindsey/Gumbs. They all transferred in the fall

          • Sorry, forgot to reply to your DT transfer question Bleedorange.
The only potential transfer I’m watching is an LSU guy, Siake Ika, out of Utah.

Utes and BYU both want him. I think the ducks do to. So it won’t be an easy battle. Also, game ready transfer NTs are about the least common player types available each year, so the market for them is really competitive.

            https://247sports.com/player/siaki-ika-46040395/

  31. Who are the possible guys who would c ok me back?

    Bradford
    Nous
    Eldridge
    Dunn
    Reichner
    Whitley
    Montibon
    Sorenson
    Murray
    Taumelau
    Rashed

I think those are all seniors. I don’t know the likelihood of which players would want to come back. All kinds of different things could be a factor here. Another shot for a backup, finally are healthy, a starter who thinks the team will be good next year. I wonder if coaches will sit down with players and tell them they should move on or ask guys to stay?

    • To be honest, would love to see the O and D lineman stay if we were prioritizing. I wouldn’t mind seeing them all stay but that’s not realistic. Anyone heard news on Whitley?

      Go Beavs!

      • Agreed on the lines. I think Whitley would be a personal decision if he is cleared to play. His conditioning was already bad (maybe partly because of his condition) so I would have to question if he could be in shape to play next season. Even if he could play in short yardage and goal line situations would be great.

      • Geez, just think for those that can stay an extra year, Utah and BYU may have some 27 year old linemen next year…

And Luton JUST missed out on a 7th year….

    • Murray has had a great year in a shortened season. I think another year and he could get a lot more attention. Is there any risk of Roberts leaving as a RS Junior? I’m not saying he is a top 1-3 round pick but if he think he can get drafted someone does he leave? That would suck.

  32. Too bad we end the season against Stanford! Let’s make it a good one. Even if we win, UW gets the tie breaker, having beat us. Strange season! Started out looking terrible but really rallied, even with a lot of back-ups having to step up. 2021 could be special if the program can retain players.

    Go Beavs!

      • That I was unclear on?! I heard at the beginning of the season that we had 7 games but then (and still) only see 6 games on the schedule. Then heard some in podcasts and such, speaking about 6 games plus one (if they make the conference championship game)??? So are you saying that a game just has to be scheduled now against a South PAC 12 team? Then after that they will hold PAC 12 conference championship game? Etc…

        Go Beavs!

      • Eggers is confident the Beavs will bowl if they end with a 4-3 record, he adds:
“There is actually a new affiliation with the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 31. Plus, teams are free to play in non-affiliated games. There will be ample opportunities if the Beavers somehow get to 4-3.”

  33. According to MP on Dan and Nigel this morning, Lowe is a available this weekend. The injury that was possibly going to keep him out seems it is now not going to.

    • Are they saying he is recovered and ready to play? Or just that he would be available based on NCAA clearance?
I agree with the 2nd, but I’m skeptical he is ready from a health perspective.

      • Recovered and ready to play. Said the injury doesn’t appear to make him unavailable. Parker said he doesn’t know how much PT Harrison or Lowe will get though.

        • Hopefully he doesn’t have to go and Jefferson/Baylor are good to go. Would rather Lowe doesn’t rush his recovery timeline if that is at all in question. Not much upside to coming back at this point in the season

  34. Daschel tweets that JS “had more of an edge after the Utah game than any post-game I’ve seen in his three years. So I asked him why.”
    From Smith’s answer:
    -Losing bothers me
    -we could have played better
-our execution wasn’t at the level I thought we could have played at
-I put that starting with myself/down to our coaches, then to the players

    https://twitter.com/nickdaschel

  35. Of the guys who are seniors, I think a fair number of them will choose to end their careers.

Reichner, Whittley should come back as Reichner opted out and Whittley has a medical issue.

Could see Montibon, Sorenson and Keobounnam returning. Unless Eldridge wants to keep going and his body is not too beat up, I see him moving on.

Only other guy I can see coming back would be Bradford.

But that could also change with how this years class turns out and the team needs a stopgap somewhere.

  36. Here’s something I keep wondering: what advantage does Colletto have in the Wild Beaver over a RB? I kept thinking we would eventually put him in there, then have him throw over the top to catch the D off guard, but it hasn’t happened.

  37. 1

    https://www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2020/split-fbs-ncaa-knight-commission-1234617688/?cx_testId=90&cx_testVariant=cx_1&cx_artPos=0#cxrecs_s

Knight Commission recommends splitting FBS football into its own entity. This would “allow for a more equitable distribution of March Madness revenue and representation within the NCAA,” as well as creating an opportunity for stronger central leadership of college football.

This would reduce the FBS football schools’ share of March Madness revenue, as well as CFP revenue, as the CFP would have to fund administrative costs.

Without the NCAA’s rules, this would be a game-changer for football.

  38. Dylan Rollins has announced he’s going to BYU. And Mbow will announce soon for Purdue. Still think we’ll see OSU shift focus to that UNLV commit, Anton Ambuehl.

  39. So it sounds like munchie and baylor are expected back this week. If they don’t play I would like to see some Carrie’s for the two big freshman backs. I don’t think much of the running troubles were Tyler’s fault tho. With Gebbia out they loaded up the run and there was no reason to worry about the pass. Hopefully Nolan takes a big step this week. Maybe Harrison will help.

I liked seeing irish returning kicks a lot more than champ.

    • Need to run more read option to loosen things up. Nolan can get positive yards but needs to make the right reads. Game film will make him better so I’m expecting more production from him on the ground this week.

      • 2
        3

I wonder if Stanford plays a deep cover 2 for easy picks on wild overthrows at 45 yards downfield….Nolan seemed to be in the zone for those and Stanford may want to see if that works.

        • 1
          3

I think we’ll see a better effort from the offense and Nolan in this game for a few reasons.

Today, Lindgren was asked about both T Harrison and T Lowe. Both are available and he said both were going to get some reps.

Hopefully, we get J2 back but I foresee the read-option package expanding and playing a slightly bigger role. Zone Read Option (when read correctly) could open things up for Nolan and (insert RB here). If the read is correct, there will be more room to run than just running basic inside/outside zone. Also, hope to see more RPO and boot, he is a dangerous QB on the perimeter with the threat to run. Stanford has some bigs on the D-line but they are not as good or as athletic as Utah’s.

Chance made some errors (overthrows, throwing into bracket coverage, a little quick to leave the pocket at times, etc) for sure against Utah. One good note from that game was his slight improvements (not perfect, but somethings improved) as the game wore on. He Hit check-downs and hot routes more, made some good on time throws, stepped up and ran when coverage got too much depth. It’s good he was exposed to Utah’s pass rush first and is now going against Stanford. He will be better in game 2.

          Go Beavs!

          • If chance can come out and complete some passes it will hurt the D or they’ll have to take a guy back out of the box and not be so aggressive. Agree that some read option could be a nice wrinkle to open things up but it worries me for fumbles and Nolan getting hurt. They haven’t been running it all year so there is some risk there.

I would like to see more WR screens or quick throws on a hot route like they did with Taylor against the ducks. Taylor got like 10 yards each time. Use the TEs size to give him a nice big target on short passes or for check downs. The WRs need to do a better job of getting open and coming back to the qb when he’s extending the play.

          • NiceBeaver:
I’m a teacher and former coach, nicknames are a habit for me. When you’re dealing hundreds of kids, you need to find a way to remember who’s who ;). J2 just equals (J squared- JJ, same thing in my world)

            Go Beavs!

  40. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQB5sIq3Dcw

For those who question Chance stepping into throws or not “setting his feet” on throws. Take a look at the following throws. Unfortunately, this site is not allowing me to give an actual analysis of each throw, kinda weird! Anyway check these times in the video:

    *~5:18/ 7:56/ 9:54/ 15:54 just to name a few

Not all good decisions but he is not flat footed. He sets feet, transfers weight forward on the throw and follows through on each example, like he’s supposed to.

    Go Beavs!

  41. Canzano’s jihad on Larry Scott continues. Let’s be clear – the school presidents are the ones who have been enabling Larry Scott. And while its understandable why ADs and other staffers are complaining about the money woes – the stuff the athletic departments spend millions on is trivial.

PS – also no bowls in California, so Pac-12 will only have about four bowl tie-ins.
