What’s the reason for the mass exodus from there this summer (transfers)? If its covid or something else. Covid needs no explanation.
This is a tricky question, and there are many theories. Like many programs, there are players who opted out of this season for Covid reasons — notably left tackle Walker Little, a likely top fifteen pick in the NFL draft, and cornerback Paulsen Adebo, who could go as high as the end of the first round. But there were others who announced their departures before Covid was an issue. One optimistic argument explains this away by saying that most Stanford football players commit to the university just as much as they’re committing to the football program. Once they’ve got their degree, if they can find another program that might allow them more playing time along with a master’s degree, they take that opportunity. The argument against this is that players used to stay and get that master’s degree at Stanford. Some fans have theorized that it’s possibly become more difficult for football players to gain acceptance into Stanford masters programs, but that doesn’t feel right to me. I think these young men are independent thinkers who are simply looking to maximize their football experience and academic gain. This leads to the larger concern — there are whispers that players aren’t as connected to the program as they once were. This could be because of coaching departures that have changed the culture of the program, or it could be because the level of success has fallen, but it’s still a real concern. The cries from the fan base reached a fever pitch as K.J. Costello was setting an SEC single-game passing record in Week 1 at Mississippi State, but the reality is that Costello left because Davis Mills is better. I’m sure he was told that he’d have an opportunity to compete for what had been his starting job, but I’m certain nothing was guaranteed. His early success under Mike Leach made everyone forget that, but he hasn’t seen the field for a few weeks. To sum all this up, it’s something that I find mildly concerning, and certainly something to watch in future off seasons.
What are the main differences in Stanford’s play between the losses vs UofNike and Colorado and the wins against Cal and UofW?
There are two main differences. The first is Davis Mills. He’s a skilled quarterback with an NFL future, and we’re finally beginning to see why he was the top rated pro-style quarterback in the 2017 national signing class. A Covid testing error on the morning of the Oregon game kept him out of that game and quarantined through much of the following week until the error was realized. He was able to practice a little bit on Thursday night and go through the walk through on Friday, but that was his only preparation before the Colorado game. Oregon and Colorado are two of the top teams in the conference, so Stanford may very well have lost those games anyway, but they missed four field goals against Oregon, and they only lost by three to Colorado. Without that botched test, the Cardinal could be 4-0.
The second difference is the play offensive line. Stanford’s Rose Bowl teams were built around the strength of dominant offensive lines, sometimes among the best in the country. The last few years has seen a precipitous fall from those levels. Two years ago the injuries along the offensive line were so debilitating that when Coach Shaw looked back at it during Media Day in the summer of 2019 he said it was unlike anything he’d seen in his career. What happened in 2019 was even worse. Three true freshmen logged starts, and at one point, with only six scholarship linemen available, they had tight ends taking reps at guard during practice. It was awful, and the result was a 4-8 season.
If there’s a benefit to all that, it’s that the current (healthy) line is young but also experienced. Shaw has talked about being hamstrung by their inexperience last year and not being able to run what they usually do, but this year — and especially last week against Washington — we saw what we’re used to seeing from a Stanford offensive line, not just the results but the process. Guards were pulling, and they were able to run power, their signature running play. Second string linemen rotated in to keep the starters fresh, and they were also available for jumbo sets calling for extra linemen. None of that was possible last season. All of that produced the most Stanford-like win in at least two years, culminating with the final drive. Clinging to a five-point lead, the Cardinal took over with 7:47 to play. They burned all of that time, along with three Washington timeouts, without giving the ball back. It was a vintage display, but I don’t think we’re ready to declare that Stanford bullyball is back. This week will tell us a lot.
How does he gauge the effect of being forced to stay away from Santa Clara County?
We’ll know an awful lot about this after this week’s game. Since they’ve been unable to practice at home, Stanford football operations moved to Seattle on Tuesday. They practiced that day at the University of Washington, and through the rest of the week they were at an area high school or two. They tried a walkthrough in a parking garage, but they were kicked out by security and ended up in a public park. Shaw said afterwards that the players are fine with all this — kids are flexible. There might even be a short-term benefit, an us-against-the-world type of feeling as they go through this three-week road trip. They’re already in Corvallis right now, so it’s possible that the novelty could wear off. We’ll see.
I have a lot of respect for Shaw – does Hank think he is at the top of his game this year?
David Shaw has become a rather polarizing figure in the Stanford fanbase. The truth is that I can’t imagine anything short of a program scandal moving him out, but there are those who have been calling for a change. If you’d asked me this question a week ago, I’d have talked about the unimaginative offense, questions about player development, and a dropoff in recruiting. Last week’s game plan and execution, however, was such a seismic shift from what we saw during the first three games that I think we have to reserve judgment. So I’m not ready to say that he’s at the top of his game, but I will say this — there’s no one else in America that I’d prefer over Shaw as head coach of my team. That being said, I’d love it — absolutely love it — if he were to look outside the program to hire a new offensive coordinator. I don’t imagine that will ever happen, however.
How well known was it in the Stanford circle of fans that Shaw’s brother was in such dire straits or the coach’s role in his comeback?
I don’t think anyone knew about this until it was reported by ESPN earlier this season. I think it was kept quiet even with the program, with only a handful of people aware of what was going on, even down to the logistical details of getting Shaw to the hospital for testing and the eventual bone marrow donation in between practices. It’s an amazing story, and I’m glad they made it public this fall.
Could Shaw have rehabilitated Stanford football without the head start Harbaugh gave him? What’s Harbaugh’s legacy reputation there now?
I’ve said this before. Jim Harbaugh was the perfect person to pull Stanford Football out of the depths. Before he arrived, there were people within the athletic department who no longer believed Stanford could field a competitive Division I football team, and then Harbaugh announced in his opening press conference that he was ready to build a team that would compete for championships. It was amazing to watch.
David Shaw, meanwhile, has been the perfect person to maintain that success. There are still fans who miss Harbaugh, often saying that Stanford has lost its edge. The truth, though — and I think people have come to realize this — is that Harbaugh left before people got tired of him or even questioned anything he was doing. There was never any adversity. I don’t think anyone wants him back, but his legacy is secure — he believed in Stanford Football when no one else did.
Go Beavs!
Women lose to Utah 85-79. They didn’t play well.
You got that right. The coach has much better games — and I expect the next practice will feature a lot rebounding work — mostly on blocking out.
Does it seem like nearly every season Beav Gals have a poor showing in one game early? I seem to remember saying (too often), ” they’ll learn a lot from this game”
Lost O-boards 10-19, surprisingly TO’s were close with Beavs down 3.
Jones not herself tonight.
Yes — I heard in the broadcast that she was 1 for 10. Most of those were puppies, and even though she was contested strongly I would have thought at least 5 or 6 out of 10. But like you said, a stinker now and then will happen. Maybe they will be inspired for Oregon
I’ll be surprised if they’re not inspired for nikegon.
Civil War WBB set for PAC12 Net, this Sunday at 4pm.
No way to spin this. It was a bad, bad loss. I hate the Quacks, but they will need to play perfectly to have a chance.
If this speculation is accurate: “I think these young men are independent thinkers who are simply looking to maximize their football experience and academic gain. This leads to the larger concern — there are whispers that players aren’t as connected to the program as they once were.” I think its great. Players smart enough to game the system to maximize their playing time AND education? I always thought Stanford played the Chip Kelly Ducks competitively because they had smart players on D as well as great offensive lines. Smart players make a difference. In contrast, I remember people here posting in frustration as OSU defenders (DEs) overran the same plays over and over against the Ducks allowing for big plays.
…”he believed in Stanford Football when no one else did.” I suggest Harbaugh believed in himself and the athletic endowment. There was no reason to believe in the Stanford football program at that point was there?
Its impressive what Harbaugh + Shaw have done at Stanford in recruiting talented, smart players to an institution with high academic standards. Sure, the scholarship and education are worth a lot (maybe not so much in the future?) and are attractive, but there’s been a pretty high level of success sustained over time. Harbaugh’s recent underachievement at a Michigan program rich in resources and the benefits of “tradition” demonstrate how hard it is to sustain success. I think Shaw has done an admirable job, and while one obviously has to acknowledge Harbaugh’s re-ignition of the program, Shaw’s sustained success is pretty impressive.
Stanford’s offensive line is a major concern for Saturday. As resilient as our defense has been (particularly last week), it’s going to be up to the offense to score some points on almost every drive.
Ya I’m pretty concerned with defending their running game especially for 4 quarters. Hopefully the offense can dominate possession time which will require a strong run game. Really hope munchie plays.
Last week the Beavs got lucky because the Utah quarterback was incompetent for a full half. I don’t think we can expect that with Stanford.
This might be a game where the Beavs might have to go on 4th and short if within their own 20 once or twice. Giving up a quick touchdown is much better than letting Stanford grind out a 5 minute, 60 yard drive. There’s simply not enough able bodies on the D Line to sub in and out.
It does present the opportunity for turnovers or penalties to happen. But if they can’t get turnovers the D line will be gassed by the 4the. Utah had some long drives that they grinded out and the D made some big stops in the 4the anyways tho.
Yeah and don’t forget that the Utes’ defense committed several crucial penalties that kept drives alive (which is unlike them). There were some little outliers that occurred throughout the game that kinda gave this game a little better appearance then it probably should have had.
Go Beavs!
Looks like UW/oregon game is at risk of not being played. IW has paused all football activity.
https://twitter.com/ESPNRittenberg/status/1336696672349347841?s=19
Which would mean Washington would be in the conference championship game due to having only 1 lost.
Unless the conference is able to pull together an extra game for everyone, as has been discussed.
Still pretty crazy that they could win the division with only wins against Utah, Arizona, and OSU.
When would the extra game happen? If they can’t play Oregon when/how would they play another team? They still would be sitting at 1 loss even if Oregon goes and plays say Colorado.
If that happens and UW can’t play for whatever reason, they would end up below the minimum requirement for games played.
@Beavs in OH, where is that stated? Based on what the guest was saying on the radio this morning, they were discussing the fact that UW would be in the championship game with a win this weekend or not playing at all.
They have to be within one game of the conference average for games played. If they’ve played 4 and the average is 5.5 or higher, they are disqualified from the championship game.
But it’s a moot point because I didn’t realize the championship game is next weekend.
I imagine UW does everything they can to not play the game and take the north.
Exactly. There’s no competitive reason for them to play.
On Dan and Nigel this morning they were talking about this exact thing, where Washington somehow can’t play this weekend. Literally 5 minutes later this press release happens and I don’t see how you play unless it is rescheduled for later like Sunday or even into next week. It is an important game so maybe they play it even the following weekend and Oregon and Washington don’t play their cross conference game.
The following weekend is the conference championship game, isn’t it?
Good point sir. Guess UW will just have to sit this weekend out and go straight to the championship.
Hmm…
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/30479408/oregon-quickly-goes-cfp-hopeful-spot-bottom-10
@NB, any indication CJ Baskerville commits today? I see a crystal ball to SDSU but he seemed high on the Beavs at one point.
He was high on OSU for several months, but I don’t think OSU considers the DB spot one that they need to fill.
that might be due to players from last years class who opted out this year (Hardge/Riley) plus the fact that everybody else is getting an additional year due to covid.
We already let Arnez Madison walk after committing to OSU, so wouldn’t surprise me if we’re just done recruiting DBs.
Beavs are at a point where they only have a couple of open scholarships, so might make the most sense to be very selective with those remaining spots and only take top tier players if they become available, or transfers. no need to reach on a project type player.
I’m expecting Baskerville to choose SDSU
Jaylen Martin right?
sorry, the other M. Martin. That’s what i get for trying to post while i’m supposed to be working
Hardge has been playing this year. Just not on defense.
oh, thought i read he sat out?
either way, i don’t see a shortage coming for DB depth unless guys decide to leave the program in the offseason.
Same goes for OL. Over the summer it seemed like we were pretty thin with depth, but with everybody being able to come back another year and the OL rotation seeming to be getting stronger each game, I don’t know that there is as of an immediate need there either I originally thought
It’s Jonathan Riley who opted out and he was the higher rated JC recruit.
I know it’s a small group, but the consistent level of quality in this class is pretty impressive. The top 3 guys are ranked as 3-stars on 247, but they could (or should) realistically all be 4-stars (Collins, Mascarenas, Vidlak). It’s nice to grab three quality in-state players, and Valsin fills the need for size at WR.
It would have been nice to add another DL or OL, but Fa’amoe and Buckles look pretty good and, as NB pointed out, OL depth in 2021 is less of a concern than it was six months ago.
Wonder what happens if the Oregon/UW game gets cancelled. Does that mean the Beavs can move up to an earlier timeslot? Would leave fox without a game. Give JJ a primetime spot to show off.
I don’t think he’ll be showing off much. Now that Stanford has seen Nolan play, they’re going to be selling out to stop the run.
If Chance keeps the ball a couple of times on a read option Jefferson could have some big runs. Smith will stick to the run even if they are down multiple scores.
That’s putting a lot of faith in a play that’s never been a regular part of our offense.
Worked last weekend and would have worked really well on the fourth down where Chance gave it to Calvin. You are right though. Need to tailor the offense to the players IMO
Is it just me or does it seem like the read option in the NFL is so well defended at this point it doesn’t really help pad RB stat lines anymore. Like Baltimore, Buffalo and Arizona are all solid running teams but their RBs aren’t exactly going gang busters like you’d expect with defenses having to respect their running QBs on read options.
Give NFL coaches one off season and they will figure out a way to stop new innovations or at least slow it down so it doesn’t gash defenses over and over again. And when one team figures out how to stop it, every team implements that plan.
Wildcat, read option, RPO, etc all had their hey days but now are just regular plays.
Regarding Chance, he’ll get 10-15 carries/scrambles vs Stanford. JJ should get the ball first and if Stanford sells out, then pull the ball and run.
Not sure if the coaches are able to install an RPO play or not, but that would be a game changer. Opens running lanes for JJ and Chance and could leave WRs one on one in space.
Lindgren said there were ones last week.
Play action to keep the backers honest. Again, this should take some of the pressure off of Nolan if OSU’s O-line is up to the task. We shall see…..
I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but Nolan doesn’t exactly sell the handoff very well.
MLB took a wrecking ball to their minor league affiliates today. Salem-Keizer is no more. But Eugene and Hillsboro got upgraded to full season advanced A ball.
But this is good news for college baseball as the reduction in affiliates means less players going to the minors. Draft has been reduced to 20 rounds.
Quality of college baseball should get better and likely more competitive.
As a side note, I understand the Hillsboro Hops pick up about 50 additional games due to this change, season jumps from 70’s to 120’s or so.
Sad that stadium won’t be used for minor league ball
They may have to join one the collegiate summer leagues.
Eugene will be interesting since they’ll have conflicts with UO early in the season.
Hopefully, this means fewer players leave college early for a shot at the pros.
Big10 says F the rules. Ohio state will be part of the conf title game cause they would have beaten michigan anyway
Maybe the pac12 will change the rules if Colorado and USC are undefeated after this weekend.
The other day I mentioned Munir McClain as a 4* WR who would probably be leaving USC soon. Looks like he is most likely going to end up playing for Deion Sanders at Jackson State, with his brother.
https://hbcugameday.com/2020/12/09/mom-of-usc-to-jackson-state-transfer-sounds-alarm/
Why? Lol
Prime Time promised him more gold bling?
Double J has been cleared to play in the Stanford game. This should help Chance Nolan quite a bit I would think. We’ll see if the O-line can do their job and open up some running lanes taking some pressure off of Nolan. Go Beavers!
Link?
Very curious to see which Stanford Offense we get? Apparently against UW they lined up like classic Stanford with 3 TEs and ran the football more versus using their base “Air Raid” they’ve been using the last couple of years. I’m hoping they stick with the Air Raid!
Go Beavs!
Have you seen our secondary?
Have you seen our D Line?
Go Beavs!
Oh, and…. have you seen Stanford operate both of these this season. They have by far looked better running their “old” offense (heavy sets, multiple TEs, run the ball with clock control) that’s how they beat UW. I think I’d rather see them be less efficient! That’s just me though.
Go Beavs!
Asked this on the twitter feed too. I’m curious how thos scenario would play out.
If UW/UO can’t play this weekend, and OSU beats Stanford, who plays as the Pac North representative the following week if UW has to sit out again?
You can’t have a no-contest in a conference championship game, can you?
Looks like UofO would still be ahead of us based on win percentage. So a 3-3 OSU with a head to head tie-breaker
and a W against Cal, the other team that beat Oregon, would still be behind a 3-2 UofO team. Makes perfect sense.
At that point, it would probably be USC vs Colorado assuming both are unbeaten.
Now the JJ has been cleared to play, the line should move to even or so. Hovering around 3-4 points in favor of Stanford.
Keys to the game,
1. Feed JJ. Use your best player as many ways as possible. Runs, screens, swing passes. Crosses over the middle aren’t great. He’s not coming back next year so get what you can from him.
2. Let Nolan keep running. It’s clear his arm isn’t elite and his anticipation for this level isn’t there yet. Legs are his best weapon. Dink and dunk!
3. When Stanford sells out vs run, run misdirection and screens, play action, slants, sweeps. Get the ball out quick to players in space.
4. Defense – tackle tackle. Stop the run and get Stanford into third and long.
5. Special teams – be consistent overall. Fix the lows from last game.
– Returns – if the ball is inside the 5 yard line, fair catch and take it at the 25.
– Kick coverage – just need to be better. Guys are clearly getting out of their lanes.
6. If Colletto runs for 40 yards on one run, use him at least once more.
Stanford was remarkably efficient last week. 10-13 on third down and 2-2 on 4th. Their offense is a ball control offense. Hog the clock and wear down opponents.
Team who is able to shut down the other’s run game wins the game.
Short passes are great if accurate but that is what Chance struggled with.
Our return game was not great in the first 2 games but has been productive since.
If BIG10 can make it up as they go along, Pac12 needs to as well. —
Winning percentage as a tie break is a joke when all teams haven’t played equal amount of games and such a small sample of games. I think the Beavs should at least get the nod for playing 6 games, beating the ducks and having 2 additional games compared to UW. Beavs win against Stanford should put them into the championship game since they would be the only team to have played all six, unless UCLA does as well.
If it is an asterisk year already, then give the Beavs a chance since they were hosed by the refs at UW anyway. OSU vs USC for the Fiesta Bowl berth
Anyone have faith in our AD to push this proposal?
Pac12 should have abandoned the whole north/south division setup this year and just gone with total conference wins as the overall winner with the 7 game schedule. Similar to the old Pac10 model. And if a team had to miss games due to Covid, they shouldn’t be rewarded while another team plays and loses. Sucks for the opponents of the Covid teams, but rescheduling games was already an option.
They were too confident in their protocols that the tiebreakers wouldn’t come into play.
Agree. It’s also screwed up that the school can make the call on whether or not they’re healthy enough to play the game. Perverse incentives on both sides. A school like UW has every reason to skip the game and coast into the title game using COVID as an excuse. A team that really needs a win could sweep some concerns under the rug & make it happen.
Not saying I trust the PAC to make that call (or do anything right – I don’t) but putting that decision in the hands of the school is a serious conflict of interest. It should be made by a neutral 3rd party.
Seems we can worry about this if the Beavs beat Stanford. That’s a really big IF.
Doesn’t matter. Beavs have no path…..unless UofO finds another team to play this week and loses, while OSU wins.
Wilner on UW’s stance on playing or not playing this week vs nike:
“Of course they want to play. They’ve seen Oregon’s run defense”
Lol, no shit.
Lots of press about UW really wanting to play, but reality is they have nothing to gain and a lot to lose. They’re not ranked and a win over Oregon wouldn’t move the needle much as this point.
I just want UW to hand the sucks their 3rd loss.
Have you guys seen the duck masks that have the big O right over the mouth? It looks like the blow up fuck dolls that have their mouths wide open. LMAO
The Big O masks! They make a great stocking stuffer….
Yes, there is a gal that wears one to work…….um
Here’s the link to my game preview featuring angry’s answers to my questions about Oregon State. If there are any other questions about the Cardinal, leave them here and I’ll get back to you.
https://www.gomightycard.com/2020/12/blogging-with-the-enemy-oregon-state-beavers.html
Kudos, Angry–“most active fan site in the conference.” And, I guess, kudos to the regular contributors here.
Re-reading my answers I seem busy and curt. Sorry about that, Hank. Very busy week. Let’s do it again next year.
Thanks, Wanna!
Hmmm, slightly favoring Beavs…interesting.
I wonder if Nolan got a vision test and Rx?
I didn’t realize its been 10 years since OSU defeated Stanford. Should be an interesting game, hope to watch this one.
It feels more recent because we’ve played them so close and should have won several times. Ever going back to that Darrell Catchings fumble through the end zone…
Yeah I pointed out him squinting during the game looking at the sideline. My hope is there was lights beaming behind the Beavs bench at that game so he had to squint. My bigger hope is the coaching staff took notice and had his eyes checked this week.
Mom tried to warn him….
I want to see the Chris Sabo glasses!
No problem at all — I know exactly how that can be. We’ve all got actual jobs, right? Next year for sure.
Thanks, Hank, for posting the link to your site. I hope many will read about your book club, a great project.
Always appreciate your thoughts, looking forward to a more normal season next year.
Any thoughts on areas of improvement (or diminished performance) for Stanford next time around?
Oh, and very noble of you to follow LSU’s lead in such things and committing to, “a self-imposed one-year Pulitzer Prize ban. I will not accept a Pulitzer Prize if it is offered.” Well played!
The one answer I would argue would be that lindsay is our best deep threat. That’s pretty much pure speculation as he hasn’t really shown anything since he got here. Really no one has shown real deep threat ability. There is irish and Gould that are really fast but haven’t seen anything from them yet either. It’s a shame with the way that they’ve been able to run the ball you would think we could have some big plays down the field. I think quitoriano has the two deepest ballss this season one being that drop last game.
My keys to this game:
Pretty simple really!
*Be physical up front on both sides! I think the O Line should be in good shape because they can use 5 (big on big) in the run game because J2 brings his own blocker when needed and can make guys miss. Pass pro will be good too with the effectiveness of J2’s running ability.
*Nolan has to take advantage of having J2 in the backfield (good decision making, take what they give you-don’t force the ball, hit open receivers)
*Win the TO battle
*Covert more 3rd downs and get more 3rd down stops, than not
IMO those 4 things win the game!
Go Beavs!
My keys to the game:
Simple as well:
*Beer. Shitloads of beer. Start with Jubelale. When that runs out switch to great Cream Ale from Two Harbors, MN.
If it really goes bad, pop the cork on Delerium Noel…..strong ass Belgian Xmas ale.
*Pizza. Helps keep BAC in check so I can drink more beer.
*Water. Hydration helps prevent cramps while running up the strains to drain the dragon.
Makes the next morning much better as well. It sucks to be depressed about the game and have a hangover!
*Bourbon If things get to the Stanford getting 12 yard per carry stage, break out the heavy stuff.
How to really win the game!
Go Beav’s!
That sounds like a plan to me!
Break out the 25 mg an hour before
Like it! :)
Go Beavs!
BG needs to host a game viewing party when this COVID clears….
As a nod towards Corvallis/OSU, I’ll bring some Block 15 beers to compliment the MN offerings….Flicker, Fresh Flow, Hoppy Holidays…
That’s pretty good. I think whoever’s can run the ball and control the clock will as well as 3rd downs and turnovers being crucial. Don’t forget special teams which has been an Achilles heel and cost us the utah game.
Aside from Smith’s questionable aggressiveness another thing that has hampered his team has been special teams play namely kick and punt coverage. They have allowed too many big returns and touchdowns. I don’t blame him for the kicking game as choukair was awful and he ended up replacing him. I do blame him for allowing champ to make terrible decisions when returning kickoffs.
Sounds like Champ won’t see the field Saturday.
From the GT:
“Champ Flemings also left the Utah game with a shoulder injury and did not practice Thursday. Smith said he is doubtful for Stanford. … Smith said that Jefferson could possibly handle return duties Saturday, but the coaching staff is looking at a few different options there. “
Time to see if Irish can run fast with the ball and hang on to it.
The alternative isn’t too bad. Fair catch all kickoffs and punts.
Agree, I’d say saving JJ for runs from scrimmage and lessening the chance of injury makes this approach very viable.
At a minimum, don’t let any returner try coming out from inside the 8-10.
It’s a good chance to get some other guys out there and see what they got. I like irish back on kick returns it’s a risk putting jermar back there injury wise. I don’t like champ as a starter and as a returner as he makes bad decisions.
Isnt Gould pretty fast? Irish seems like the best choice.
Extremely fast
Bradford’s dinged up
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/115131460
Hope Treshaun Harrison is ready to go. Good opportunity for him to show what he can do(if Chance can find some control over his throws, that is)
Different opponent, Jermar in the backfield, I think Chance will be fine! I have heard a lot of hype around Harrison. I’m excited but also tenative.
Go Beavs!
Champ too
BREAKING: Dawgs/ucks game cancelled…per “source”
https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/source-uws-rivalry-game-at-oregon-to-be-canceled-due-to-increase-in-positive-covid-19-cases-inside-huskies-program/
Frees up an afternoon TV slot……….hmmm
2020 PAC-12 North exhibition season champs!
Vidlak to enroll in January..
This is great! Would have some major depth at the QB position if he can pick things up quickly. This is not counting out Gulbranson either. This would be 4 solid possibilities if needed (hopefully not but…).
Go Beavs!
Someone’s going to transfer. That’s too many collective years of eligibility from guys that could play elsewhere.
That’s the nature of the beast! Then it’s just, “next man up”! 3 quality QBs is still good.
Go Beavs!
Mixed feelings, sad he didn’t get a senior year but more time in the system is good
Beavs getting their asses handed to them by Portland right now. Tinkle is absolute trash. Worse than dumpster fire coaching. Game on Pac-12 Network.
36-29 Portland at half-time.
Unfuckin’ believable, they went seven minutes without scoring against the Portland Pilots! How does a team start regressing five games into the season? Oh, yeah it’s because Wayne Tinkle is the head coach.
Craig Robinson 2.0
Craig Robinson could at least kind of recruit guys that weren’t related to coaches.
I was hoping that without the coaches son’s they would play better as a team. Thompson isn’t a true point guard and tinkle has never seemed to be able to get one and play them. Bruce was good in limited action but of course he transferred. Seems like MBB has no chance of being good until tinkles contract is up. Barnes hire there will be big and hopefully he can nail it. I won’t get my Hope’s up tho.
How fast can the Pac12 front office fuck this up?
https://trojanswire.usatoday.com/2020/12/10/cbs-will-lose-sec-football-to-disney-espn-pac-12-should-negotiate-media-rights-without-larry-scott/amp/
Why oh why is the SEC abandoning CBS? Americans love CBS significantly more than ABC/ESPN.
This is a golden goose for the Pac-12. lol
Certainly better then half your games broadcast from a third party on facebook.
I agree that the CBS game coverage of the SEC is better than what ABC/ESPN could do. However, as usual it came down to money. The current CBS is $55M annually. The new deal is $300M annually. So every SEC school will get $17.5M more each year. It will be incredibly difficult for other conferences to keep up. Maybe the Big Ten and the ACC if it keeps Notre Dame in the fold. Eventually, new realignment is almost bound to happen. They talked about the PAC-16 about a decade ago. It might happen. That at least would save OSU. But if some of the larger, better funded and branded schools like SC, UCLA, UW, UO, etc jump ship to the Big 12, then schools like OSU, WSU, Colorado will be in deep trouble. If there was better leadership at the PAC-12, they should really relook at what it would take to get Texas and OU in the fold. But of course, we have Larry Scott who would only go along with such a plan if he was guaranteed a new contract as commissioner with double the salary of any other conference commissioner or something to that effect.
Ethan Thompson is so weak. He is the problem with this team. Defensively he is awful, offensively he should be
a player that wins you games at the end but he fails. His attitude and demeanor are bad and he should be a leader.
He had 31. Who else can score consistently?
Oh, hey they Beavsblow… it’s been a while. Welcome back. I understand, it took a couple of weeks before you started to fell better about yourself. Must have been difficult to enjoy life after the ducks lost to Beavs and then followed that up with a choke job against the bears. Yes Beavs basketball isn’t very good… feel better now? Yes our football team sucks too… feel better? Yes ducks won’t lose again this weekend… feel better? Take a breath, it’s just entertainment/sports. Love my alma mater and enjoy rooting for them. Felt good to beat ducks but really don’t want my life or self worth to revolve around whether they win or lose. Also don’t see the point in trolling rivals other than some banter with friends and family… but I understand this is really important to you.
Triggered Karen writes a novella. I didn’t post anything that wasn’t true. Calm down little beavo. Lmao
I’m tired of that half-smile on his face like he’s constantly stoned. Of course, his two free throw misses came in OT. He makes a three-pointer with 2 seconds left after it doesn’t matter. In the last three games, they’ve blow 10,11 and 8 point second-half leads. What a cluster fuck.
Beavs score on one end and Thompson forgets or doesn’t even try to defend on the other end.
and next trip down floor his man scores again
Beavs should snatch up Gregg Marshall if he’s available in 2023. lol
Hilarious.
Congrats Portland.
Big Wayne is now 95-99 at osu. Losing conference and overall record. 2.1 million/year. Lil John is 9-20. 2.4 million/year. Who lasts longer?
41-38.
2-10 in last 12
44-39 in last 83.
Top 10 recruiting class, number 1 player in the country, cant stop the run. Embarrassing. You should be thanking God they canceled the Washington game so you didn’t get embarrassed on prime time national TV for the third time in 3 weeks.
Freshman. The whole team will be back next year. Not too worried. We will give one every four or five years. Who’s seat is hotter? Smith’s or Cristobal’s? One proven winner and one proven loser
Lol… I was in Texas last year for that Auburn game. That’s what you call winning football and a proven winner? I am glad you have dropped all that natty talk, seems like ever sense cristobal, the duck fans bar is beginning to drop. It should tell you something when every competitor to ducks is happy they hired him lol… can’t say the same about smith. There is something that scares folks when you do more with less. Now with ol cristalball he does the opposite, less with more lol
Proven winner? Cristobal is 51-59 as a head coach. Thats some nice Springtucky math you got going on.
Good lord. He has a winning record at Oregon. Who gives a Fuck what he did elsewhere? Smith on the other hand, has a losing record. A bad losing record. Not even close to .500 losing record. Lmao
Look up the contracts dumbass.
I looked up the contracts and I’m pretty sure I’m not the dumb ass. That would be your administration. Lmao
Well then why would you ask the question when the answer is right there. You’re pretty sure but you’re a dumbass so how would you know?
Bite me kid…41-38.
Aka Garrett, Elite Duck, 4 under after 3, deep three, etc., and many other monikers used in another forum…..so pathetically transparent…. Careful not to get banned from this site again like you did in Oregon live on several occasions. Lol!
Ah Swammi, taking those losses so hard. Lmfao
Head, 41-38 is definitely hard to take. Lol
Yeah, 41-38 is definitely hard to take. Lol
You know for a duck fan you sure spend a lot of time on an OSU fan site..just saying.. why troll this site?.. does it make you feel better?
After years of dealing with the same from Beaver fans on the Oregonian site including Swammi and many others also on this site,
it makes me feel great. You reap what you sow. The irony is that they can dish it out but they can’t take it. That’s the funny part
Twilight zone. Wow. Lmao. Good to see you again speaker of truth. Hopefully you’ll be brave enough to hang out with us even when things don’t go well for your duckies. You tend to disappear after tough loses.
You’ve finally come out of the closet..good for you, good for you Fanny. As I said previously commented when you started reappearing here, you are who you are despite your attempts to disguise your identity. You just can’t resist getting more sand kicked in your face. .glutton for punishment. Lol
What’s funny is you actually stalked me to another site. I used the same name I most often used in that other forum while you do what you’ve always done….hide behind yet another moniker. Good for you kid, good for you.
Thanks for confirming my post Swammi. Lmao
The only way he can get a boner to play with.
I think he squats to take a leak so it’s doubtful he gets a boner. It’s kind of fun having the forum idiot visit where he knows he’s not welcome.
You’ve suffered quite a bit Swammi after your cousin gave you the Heimlich treatment growing up. Lifelong effect
I expected a less talented, but fundamentally strong team with Tinkle. A team that played hard for 40 minutes. 10 or 12 of the same types of players he could rotate in and out with – but there is minimal player development.
Does anyone see it getting better at any point? And is it odd that there has been so much turnover in the roster and almost zero in the assistant staff? That’s not a good sign.
I think UofP was 1-15 last year in conference and was one of two D1 teams in the nation that got practice started a full month+ after everyone else. Fire Tinkle
You’ve got some weird conflicts going on in your head, buddy. You derive pleasure from seeing the Beavers lose, yet you want us to fire a losing coach. Strange duck.
Yeah, her be an interesting case study for psychology…it would be a very short research effort too. Lol
Fire Tinkle is a joke. I hope he sticks around for a very long time. I do wonder from time to time why Gary Payton hasn’t been hired. Given the shot in the arm and fan support he could probably draw, I wonder if he’s ever been considered by your inept administration?
To those who are saying it’s Ethan Thompson’s fault obviously hasn’t been watching the games. The team has the talent but the coaching is just not there. Terry Porter has been coaching his team for 3 f-ing weeks and they were the more disciplined well coached team… Tinkle better get back to reading that Mike Montgomery book lol… we are so great at giving sub par coaches great contracts it’s unreal… I wish he’d have an affair with a cheerleader and leave voluntarily.
Terry Porter’s Pilot teams have been anything but disciplined the past couple of full seasons.
If they were the more disciplined team after a couple of weeks practice, that’s pretty bad.
I havent watched any OSU bball yet this year. Sounds like there’s no reason to change that any time soon.
Year two of Tinkle with GP 2. Man I thought we had finally found a coach. Seems like a lifetime ago.
Craig Robinson somehow found an unbelievable talent in GP2 and then he got fired. I guess we have to give Big Tinks credit for getting GP2 to stay with the program, but in hindsight that looks like about all, he should get credit for.
Robinson could actually coach the 1-3-1 and Princeton offense. He had 2 solid bankable skills but he went away from them. Granted these are borderline gimmicks and he probably couldn’t recruit guys to play in those systems which is why I guess he went away from them. It is difficult to pin down a bankable skill Tinkle has. Both guys seemed well liked in town, and actually had a decent grasp on being the CEO of a team. Just didn’t have much else for coaching chops IMO.
Tinkle is a Olympic quality pit sweater. Boy has skills!
Unbelievable talent in GP2? Broken jumper and a dunker. Those guys are a dime a dozen in college. He was an elite defender. If he was an “unbelievable talent” he wouldn’t keep bouncing back and forth to the G-league every year
Yes, at the P-12 level I would classify him that way. That doesn’t mean his skills translated to the NBA.
Unbelievable athlete yes. Unbelievable talent? No. There were several games where he would completely disappear and be a total non-factor. Jump shot was a mess and he could slash and dunk but wasn’t even an average shooter. The Thompson Bros both were more reliable scorers
It’s so good to see a beaver fan finally admit that anderpants had an affair with the cheer coach. Beaver fans denied that so hard when I would post that he had the affair and he was in rehab. They denied all of that but now they know it’s true.
For as much as you follow Beaver fan blogs I’d think you’d have at least half a clue what you are talking about.
It’s 100% true
It’s a running joke on here dummy
That you have no idea what you’re ever talking about….thats 100% true. Loser.
Yeah, worst kept secret in Corvallis if it is even considered a secret. The old fogies I tailgate with even knew and they have very orange colored glasses.
Pretty sure that rumor was circulating on this blog as soon as Andersen left and maybe even prior. Beavsblow is the worst kind of internet troll – a fake tough guy that spends all of his time on an opposing fan base’s blog and has nothing of value to add ever.
Nothing of value? I disagree. Please point out one thing that is not factual that I have posted. You have proven time and again that you know zero about sports. Have you ever played sports before or were you like swammi that got cut from his JV basketball team at Roseburg? Do you have the same sports intellect that swami does. He denied Andersen’s affair for years And just wouldn’t believe that he was a drunk
Cristobal is a winning coach. False. 51-59
Oops its 51-56 sorry.
Like I posted above, this guy has now stalked me again to this site. It wasn’t that he didn’t once as Fanny and then got banned by Angry, but he’s back again with the same old stuff using a completely new name. Oh sure, he tried to disguise who he was, but with his first comments that I read not too long ago, I knew immediately it was him. He leaves a specific scent that is easily sniffed out and we know that smell is just plain bullshit. I hope Angry just keeps him active because everything Beavers and Swammi is his obsession and his therapy. Without it, his life lacks meaning and clarity. He’s in survival mode now especially after the Beavers humiliated the Ducks 41-38 and he’s having difficulty coping with reality. It must be tough being this kid because he’s got nowhere else to turn so he in essence becomes our forum idiot….a perfect fit for him.
Boy, was I wrong about MBB. Despite having the look of long, rangy guys that could be quick and disruptive it’s just not coming to fruition. Maybe the 70 point win against a lower level team destroyed this team mentally. It does feel like a coaching issue but I have no idea what to do about it.
Not having a PG makes the game a lot tougher. Guess it is good for Thompson though, he isn’t ever gonna make it as a SG in the NBA, his only hope is at PG so it makes sense the team didn’t bring in a PG from the aspect of giving the coaches son a shot to develop skills that might one day make him money. Just too bad the team prioritized coaches son over winning.
Nah he’s not nba no matter what position he plays. That said, a good pg would have really helped his development at sg. His best chance at nba would have to play him at his natural position for 4 years with a good pg setting him up for spot up 3s and having him focus on becoming an elite defender. D is a mindset, effort and technique. Ralph Miller could have turned this kid into something special if he was tough enough to handle the heat. Playing for tinkle and his dad shows he likes to be in his comfort zone. He probably would have transferred within a year or so with a legit coach riding his ass
I agree and my point wasn’t to the contrary. Just saying as a hypothetical NBA SG he is nothing really special whereas he has decent size as a hypothetical NBA PG. But he clearly lacks bankable skills for either position in the NBA. He might even struggle to find a home overseas.
Yeah I agree who knows. What’s clear is Tinkle has never been able to develop talent. Seems freshman come in, they seem like they have some potential but it never develops. You don’t see it much anymore because of kids jumping to nba early but back in the day, seems talent developed more with good coaching. A senior playing for Ralph was 10 times the player they were as a freshman. Same with Lute Olsen and knight. Gonzaga with Few is one of the exceptions we see today.
I’m posted this in the past but this is from GoMightyCard.com, If you have a couple buck to spare this is a great cause.
“I write this blog during the wee hours of the night, but by day I am a mild-mannered middle school English teacher — ironically enough, at a place called Stanford Middle School. I teach all types of students, some of whom might end up at Stanford University one day, but today I want to talk to you about a group of 8th grade students that is close to my heart.
My seventh period class is made up of the 23 lowest readers in the school. Many of them had not read a book on their own before coming into my class, but in their second year in my room — third year for a handful of them — many of them are seeing the light and discovering the joy of reading.
It’s difficult to find high-interest reading material that’s still accessible to my students, all of whom are reading two or more years below their grade level. Once titles are identified, school budgets make it difficult to put books in the hands of these suddenly eager readers.
This is where you come in. If you’ve ever read something here and thought, “This is a good as something I might find behind another site’s paywall,” or if GMC is a daily stop for you, please consider clicking on the link below. It will take you to GoMightyCard’s Amazon Wishlist, and you’ll be able to buy a copy (or more) of The Hunger Games to donate to my class.”

Good stuff Hank. Just sent a book your way.
*Except not Hunger Games. Looks like that request was already fulfilled.
Pretty cool that Brent Brennan has gotten SJSU from a perrenial dormat to a potentially undefeated season in just a few years. They play Nevada tonight in Las Vegas in the old UNLV stadium. I don’t believe SJSU has been able to play a single game at their own home site this season due to Covid.
If they win tonight, they go onto the Mountain West title game.
Hey, NiceBeaver, did ya know the pick’em is still not up?
Thanks for the reminder. Totally havent been thinking about the pool lately. Will do it now
Ok, spreads have been added for the main pool.
But for whatever reason, this glitchy CBS site won’t let me advance the Pac12 pool to Week 15 now. So it’s currently stuck thinking last week is the current week.
Will try again later today to see if week 15 gets unlocked. Must have something to do with UW/Oregon getting cancelled
Thanks, we realize you’ve got a few other things in life besides the pool.
And thanks for mentioning SJSU, always thought Brennan was good people.
Right now SJSU is favored by 1, should be a good game……CBSS at 7pm pst
SJSU is a difficult place to win at. That win at Arkansas last year was huge for the program.
Strange to see Kevin McGiven having success as OC there. More evidence that Gary Andersen was absolute trash.
Good point about the evidence that GA was “absolute trash”.
Looks like Brennan is a possible candidate for replacing Sumlin at Arizona.
The Scoop lists several possibilities and points out that the job “…has paid consistently in the top half of the PAC-12”
Some of the names mentioned: Rick Neuheisel, Brennan, Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos, and others. They say the top candidate is probably Steve Sarkisian.
Final decision expected soon, obviously tonights shellacking by ASU isn’t gonna help Sumlin.
https://footballscoop.com/news/sources-an-update-on-kevin-sumlin-arizona/
Sarkasian STILL has options? Shouldn’t he be selling real estate or insurance by now?
I wonder if Andersen overruled McGiven to go with “guys with juice!”? Or maybe McGiven is just punching in the right weight class now?
Mcgiven had success in the mountain west before didn’t he?
Last night”s game was a pathetic defensive performance. Beavers up by 8 with less than six minutes left and couldn’t close the game out. There is enoigh talent to win these types of games but tinkle just doesn’t show the ability to coach his players up. Ethan really hasn’t dramatically improved his game since sophomore or junior seasons. Sure he had a solid offensive night but doesn’t make his teammates better and he’s not a leader. That’s part of the issue as they don’t have a floor leader like they did with Tres. This team will hover around. 500 unless someone accepts the leadership role by example and production on the floor. I like some of the talent they have now they’ve got to learn how to play together as a team and that’s a huge deficiency on tinkle and his staff. Altman does an excellent job of getting his teams to develop chemistry….tinkle….nope….not so much.
Daniel Carson, a redshirt sophomore DL at The University of Texas is now in the NCAA transfer portal: https://texassports.com/sports/football/roster/daniel-carson/9755
This morning, when I checked his Twitter account, there were not OSU coaches following him; this afternoon, Coach Legi, Coach Bray, and Darrick Yray are following him ?
It’s almost as if a certain recruiting account got them on the trail earlier this morning…..
Keep in mind though, plug and play transfer DTs are about the most competitive spot to recruit for. There will be a ton of teams after him that’s we’d have to beat. Nebraska did offer him back when Bray was there, so hopefully there is an established relationship already(notice Bray was the first coach to follow him today)
Well at least we have playing time to offer. This definitely would be huge to get him.
Any chance we get a high school or jc guy? That’s the one problem I have with this class.
Yup, because looking at these stats, he couldn’t crack the lineup at Texas. Four games, one tackle in his career.
He would add depth. Size is on par with guys we have. Not a plug and play NT.
Update on the CBS pools. The pac12 only pool was ended prematurely by CBS. No idea why. Beaverbeliever wins with 15 overall picks( i was in 2nd place with 13 and I swear i would have caught you this week!)
Anyway, the other larger all conference pool is still active.
https://twitter.com/BeavRecruiting/status/1337536272563281921?s=19
Thought I would take a look at the transfer portal and see if there was any guys who have the size to be an NT, heres the uncommitted guys I came up with. This has nothing to do with their actual skill or fit in the system, basically just weight and over 6′.
https://247sports.com/Player/Antar-Thompson-21394/
https://247sports.com/Player/Tyrone-Chambers-76207/
https://247sports.com/Player/Sione-Tuitupou-46096342/
https://247sports.com/Player/John-Graves-46037880/
https://247sports.com/Player/Travius-Harris-80780/
https://247sports.com/Player/Alex-Criddle-82868/
https://247sports.com/Player/Tiano-Tialavea-82427/
https://247sports.com/Player/Dominion-Ezinwa-46052490/
https://247sports.com/Player/Eddie-Zinn-Turner-46079970/
So there is definitely guys out there with the size we need in the portal. Probably pretty tight recruiting competition on these dudes.
Wow, Arizona.
No kidding
Ahhh, they lost 59-0 in 1919….at least they got on the board tonight…
https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/college/asu/2020/12/11/territorial-cup-asu-football-vs-arizona-live-updates-scores-notes/3895365001/
In memory of Jack, remember it’s not a fork over there on the ASU sideline!
Did Jack pass away? Serious question.
Go Beavs!
angry says no.
Thanks oob! There’s a few real dildos on this board (which Jack was one) but I would hate to hear about anyone dying!
Go Beavs!
He commented back around September.
He popped in briefly and my guess is he read his obituary thread and thought ‘fuck you assholes’.
Cristobal is a winning coach at Oregon. Who cares what he did before that. Didn’t have the talent
“Fear the trident” just didn’t have the same alliterative value…
Four out five dentists fear …..eh recommend Trident.
Sumlin will be a goner tomorrow!
Go Beavs!
As posted above:
https://footballscoop.com/news/sources-an-update-on-kevin-sumlin-arizona/
So should Tinkle.
Maybe some DT and OL will hit the transfer portal? Don’t know if there’s any good ones there?
Andersen is probably on the phone now…”Those Az co-eds are HAWT, and I’m between opportunities…”
Gary’s no fool..
Serious question for somebody out there. If, and that’s a big if, the Beavs win tomorrow, they end up 3-2 in the north, tied with Oregon, who we beat. How are we not considered for the championship with the Huskies out. I listened all day to local sports radio and the only mention was Dusty and Cam in the morning, that it was a possibility. Everyone else seems to just jump to the conclusion it’s the ducks that would fill the spot. That, or undefeated USC vs undefeated Colorado (which is what the Pac should do) The loss to Utah wouldn’t count against our north division record, and we seem to be content just letting this happen. Coach Smith should be using this as motivation for his players to go seize the opportunity!!!
Would really like an explanation from someone out there why we are ruled out with a win against Stanford tomorrow. Unless in this messed up Covid season overall win percentage is what matters, not just north division. But if that’s the case, Colorado vs USC!?!?!
Actually the Pac-12 voted on specific rules for Pac-12 Championship representation before the season started. I heard in addition to UW-UO game being canceled, that for Colorado (2nd South team) to get in, required a total percentage of canceled games. It was atleast two more games cancelled besides UW-UO. So if UW can’t play in the Championship because of Covid protocol, then it absolutely should be Oregon State, as that threshold has not been reached.
Beavs deserve the good karma as it could easily have been us without the two bad spots against UW. Just got to beat Stanford and see what develops.
Exactly, beat the Furd and force the dilemma. And Coach Smith should be vocal about it. Lead his young men by putting up an argument that we should be in the championship game.
And I know, we all know, we got bad calls in a couple games, but we can’t use that as an excuse. My old man was a giant killer, and Coach Andros, who basically wrote the bible, said never leave it up to the refs. So there ya go.
AD Barnes is the one who should be carrying the ball on any effort to place the Beavs in the Championship Game.
Coach JS should be using this as motivation for his players.
Wilner and Canzano could be helpful, but Barnes is the one with standing. And I have no confidence he’ll lift a finger…maybe if F.King prods him?
Bottom line: First smack Tree but even then I think Bill has it right when he says, “the conference will do what the big10 did and change the rules so USC and Colorado play for the title if both are undefeated.
The utah loss counts, that’s why.
So then if USC and Colorado both are undefeated, and non division losses count, shouldn’t those two be in the conference championship?
It just really feels like the Pac-12 is making a half assed effort to shoe-horn in their tOSU (Nike U) without any substantial rules, or evidence otherwise. I feel like, as much as I hate to say it, someone like Canzano or Wilner should be pressuring the Commish more about this. The championship is 8 days away and we got nothing…
When have non division losses not counted in the standings?
The issue with USC and Colorado was not really anticipated by the pac12. But the conference will do what the big10 did and change the rules so USC and Colorado play for the title if both are undefeated.
I hope so, but have zero confidence in Larry Scott
Do you think they would put Colorado in it if the ducks would be the team in?
If the Beavs win, why would the ducks be the team in? That’s what Im trying to get at. We would have the same north division record, with a a win over the ducks.
Do I think they would put Colorado in. No. Should they? Yes.
It’s simple in this Covid year, 2 undefeated teams should play for the championship regardless of anything. They have won every game they played. Has USC been impressive, nope. Barely won a couple games, but they found a way to win them. Colorado went out and beat every team they faced. Nobody else can say that.
If Washington cant play next week, go all Big ten on it, change the rules and put those two in the conference championship
oregon will be 2nd place in the north regardless of what happens tomorrow. The reason is winning percentage is the first metric. At 3-2, they would be ahead of a 3-3 Oregon State or Stanford. Only way OSU could catch them is if oregon were to play an alternate game this weekend and lose, but it’s too laye to set that scenario up.
The same fans who bitched and criticized UW for not playing this weekend also would prefer their team sits out this weekend too, because they know they’ll back into the Pac12 championship game when UW isnt ready again next Friday.
Colorado is more deserving, I guess. But they only played 3 conference games total.
Thanks man. So Utah not being in the division still counts as a loss, basically scratching the whole idea of a north and south division, unless it comes to the conference championship.
I guess my point is, if our loss to Utah counts against us, why have divisions? And in the case, shouldn’t the two best records go to the championship?
I agree with you, but these were the rules that were set coming into the season. I still dont think the Beavs deserve a shot at the pac12 title after losing 3 games, but I also don’t think oregon is more deserving given that both oregon losses were to the Beavs and a team the Beavs beat. oregon benefits from sitting on their asses this week.
I guess the best thing to happen out of this is the ducks get embarrassed in the championship game.
I dunno…how about OSU beats WSU with its new coach and FR QB?
Then beat a Stanford team you haven’t beaten in 10 years that living on the road the past two weeks?
FWIW, Softy Mahler (broadcaster and big dawg fan from Seattle) says:
What I’m hearing the Pac 12 plan is for now: Winner of south goes to Champ game. UW will get shot to play. If not cleared medically, Oregon will go. Idea of Colorado/USC in Champ game if both win tomorrow is off the table barring unforeseen circumstances
His ex-wife game him the nickname BTW…
FWIW,
Wilner reports that final decision on the championship game and all other week seven games, will come late Saturday or on Sunday per a PAC12 source.
Not much time for anyone at OSU to lobby even with a blowout of Stanford.
And speaking of F.King Alexander, it has been reported that Shaw said that Oregon State’s president, F. King Alexander, visited the team earlier in the week to ensure that everything was going well.
“Everything’s been great,” Shaw said. “Couldn’t be more positive about the experience. We live here right now and we’ll live someplace else next week.”
Rumor around B1G is with Ohio State getting a pass to the championship game, they are going to make up the Axe game with Wisconsin and maintain the longest continuously played rivalry in CFB. Hope it is true even though my Gophers prolly get killed. Maybe another CW like miracle?
Go Beav’s!
Yo guys, my original post got caught by the filter due to links. I went through the transfer portal and looked for available guys with an NT body. If you are interested take a scroll up.
Hey thanks for putting in the effort for that! It shows theres guys out there, and, no offense, but if you can find them, the coaches should be able to too!!! Elu Aydon never really impressed me, but he took up space. We could use some guys like that!
Go Beavs
35-17 win for the good guys!!
I mean it took seriously impressive skills. I went to the Google’s and typed in ‘football transfer portal’, kept focus and ignored the targeted adds for hemaroid creams, clicked the first link, changed TWO filters and got the mother load.
Not your average internet user over here!
Game day! Last game of the season, what are you guys serving up for food and drink? I think I’m going with an elk stew, some decent bread and fresh cut fries on the side…
Please let me know if you know of any free, safe links…
In 9 months – if the good lord is willin’ and the creeks don’t rise – @ Purdue, then host Hawaii, host UI Vandals….then ASU, Stanford, Utah and UW in Reser. Pretty good and challenging home slate. ASU’s qb would be fun to watch, time for a home win over those last three as well.
@ CAL, Co, UO, USC, WSU….
https://fbschedules.com/ncaa-2021/team/oregon-state
I’m drinking 25mg. Just kidding. Maybe.
Is your email on here valid? Wanted to send you something…
Yes, same one we had an exchange on months ago? I’ll check it.
Sent you a message.
Scratch chicken tenders and honey mustard/marinara sauces!
What time should I come over and do I need to bring anything?
One more game, right? Maybe last home game (not that it really matters).
Filapino chicken skewers and shrimp fried rice.
I was asking about this earlier and everyone was saying there was still one more after this?! Not the case?
To answer your question, the wife and I normally do Keto but during the holidays we’ve splurging a bit. I usually grill wings (most game days), tonight we’re ordering in. Gettin’ some Mac and Cheese and other side dishes and just chow down. Drinking my Vodka with Polar water still though! I miss my Mirror Pond but 13G of carbs per is a bit too much! :)
Go Beavs!
I live out in the country in maui so won’t be able to get the game. So my and I will be heading to a bar with my dog Odin. I’m currently out of work but the state gave out 500$ debit cards to use at bars and restaurants so we’ll be splurging there. I believe they have dead guy there so I’ll probably have at least one of those and maybe some amount with wings.
Everyone have fun be safe and hopefully the Beavs can get a win. I think chance plays a little better and does enough to get the win. I’ll go with 35-31 Beavs!
Go Beavs!
28-13 tree unless Nolan surprises.
With Double J back and Baylor (potentially), that should help take some of the pressure off Nolan. I would expect now that he has a full game under his belt, he’ll hopefully settle down those happy feet and be more comfortable in the pocket. Hopefully, Bradford is available too bc he has become what appears to be the go to receiver for the Beavers. Let’s hope the O-line gives Double J some running lanes and provides Nolan with enough protection to find some open receivers. Lastly, I’m hoping the OSU’s OC has a game plan for high % passes, screens, bubbles, quick slants, or even throwing swing passes to Double J and Baylor. The passing plays last week were anything but high % especially for a kid making his first start in FBS on the road vs. a pretty decent defensive unit. Set Nolan up for success rather than failure….
Beavers26 wants to know what you mean by happy feet for Nolan…
Does he have a foot fetish?
Nah. I debunked that. He sets his feet just fine and even steps through on his throws. I was giving you Angry the benefit of the doubt, thinking he was talking about leaving the pocket to soon (some would argue that). Somebody answered for Angry and said he wasn’t setting his feet on his throws. They’re wrong :)
Go Beavs!
His feet were moving a lot in the game vs. Utah as noted by the announcers and probably accounted for his inability to throw the ball accurately on some of the occasions. That combined with first game jitters, I don’t think he was comfortable in the pocket. I suspect he’ll play better vs. Stanford if the line can protect and open up some holes. He definitely has a stronger arm than Gebbia in terms of the deep ball.

Let’s check some of the throws out shall we?
(the pick at 1:23) Sets feet, drives forward off front foot, follows through! Bad read and decision!
@2:40, the announcer says (“jittery feet”) but QBs are coached to keep their feet moving when scanning the field. Pressure coming down on him, he’s not 100% set here but would hardly call this “happy feet”
@3:03, sets, drives and throws
@5:18 sets, drives and throws
@7:56 with pressure in his face- sets, drives and throws
@15:42 with a defender in his face, sets feet, drives and throws (with some recoil) from the defender in his face
@16:08 Sets, drives and throws (poor throw)
There are more but saying Nolan has “happy feet” is just incorrect. Every QB that has ever played is forced to throw off balance and doesn’t always have their feet perfectly set but to make it sound like it’s a consistent problem is just wrong!
How many of you that make all of these “observations” are making them as fans and how many have actually played/coached the game? Just curious?! There are a lot self conceived experts on here throwing around some bad info! It’s laughable really! Here it comes, let’s see who the shoe fits?!
Go Beavs!
His inability to set his feet on several throws led him to overthrow his receivers by five yards. If you cannot set your feet in a decent rhythm, you are very unlikely to drive the ball downloads upon the delivery for short and medium throws. This is fundamental to both football and baseball.
Most of that was Nolan’s decision making and not taking the short throws and check downs as stated by him and Lindgren also obvious on tape.
Atomos: Show me the money. Prove it!
Go Beavs!
I think some kudos are due to the coaching staff. In the COVID environment, they’ve managed the health of their team, no games cancelled (correct?), and have losses of 10, 6, and 6 points. They’re two wins are by narrow margins, they had an overdue CW win, and managed to be competitive and in every game, which is progress. The team has not quit in the fourth or any other quarter. They need to get started faster though.
The loss that disappoints me the most is hosting WSU and losing to a new staff and a FR qb. I thought OSU’s continuity would pay off but it didn’t. Blown calls at UW likely affected outcome, so that’s disappointing for another reason.
Kylor Kelly signs with Spurs according to Twitter. I don’t know the terms of his agreement, but I guess we’ll see how he does. If he could develop some sort of a perimeter game, he might have a shot. We shall see….I recall someone suggesting ad nauseum on other forums last year that he didn’t have the talent, etc., now we’ll see if KK can prove them wrong.
Project
Why don’t you know the terms of the agreement? It listed it right on Twitter. I think I know why
Hey douche, go to the link for Beaver Recruiting at the top of the blog site, scroll down a few clicks and there you’ll see it. I don’t spend time on Twitter or social media getting a jacked up for stuff like you do.
And he got waived right away. Seems a popular avenue that teams are taking to fill in their g league affiliates.
Thanks as I didn’t read the details just saw a quick blurb on Twitter.
I looked at the link to Beaver Recruiting up at the top of this blog and is all it stated was that KK signed with the Spurs w/out any details.
Lmao. Like I said…. project
So I was correct in saying last night, two more games had to be canceled to satisfy the threshold voted on by Pac-12 schools before the season. Cal-WSU was just canceled, so one of USC-UCLA or OSU-Syanford would have to be canceled to not meet threshold. Only matters if Colorado can come back (down 24-21) to beat Utah in the 4th quarter. There would be squaking but by rules agreed upon Oregon would get in. Not impossible that they do a hasty vote and Oregon gets outvoted.
If USC-UCLA or Stanford-OSU is canceled, then Pac-12 falls below games-played threshold for division winners to meet in the champ game.
Arizona should have cancelled last night’s game.
Still matters if one more game is canceled, but I don’t expect that. In that scenario, division champion format is scrapped,, and both CU and UW would be 3-1 and come down to 4th tiebreaker which can’t be determined until all games played before Pac-12 Championship.
Haha, my brother’s head is going to explode. At this rate Nebraska will be longing for the good old days of Mike Riley!
Ouch. They are getting worse with each new coach. Not sure if they have any other golden boys out there ready to take the helm.
That was my worry when JS was hired. I thought and still kind of do, that he was hired a little too early in his coaching career. Was hoping for a guy who could build a foundation and then Smith could come in and take over.
Hope tonight’s game can serve as a tipping point in JS’s career.
Man this game has so many question marks around it:
*How will Chance perform?
*Will the Beaver offensive line step up and play like they have (very strong) at times (very well coached group)?
*Will Stanford’s trenches manhandle the Beavs on both sides?
*How will these new guys do- Harrison? Lowe?
*How will the Beaver defense look? Do they have a better start?
How does Stanford perform after being vagabonds for the last few weeks?
I think this will be a close game (within 9 points). 3rd downs will be huge on both sides of the ball. Oregon State gets some TFL and puts Stanford in 3rd and long, it will be better for the Beavs. 3rd and short is going to be rough with Tree’s physicality up front. The one favor for the Beavs in the trenches that I see is the O Line being able to get some push (as they have against physical D Lines at times all year- UW and UO). So if it comes down to having to outscore Stanford, it’s possible (Chance will obviously have to make some plays but I think he will be much improved from the Utes game).
The Beavers’ Offense goes big down the stretch! Beavs pull off the upset: 30-27
Go Beavs!
Hopefully Smith locks up O-Line coach M, in case U of A comes knockin’! That is where he was before stepping into this staff. I realize he was here back in the Erickson era but just sayin’.
Go Beavs!
Great point, I haven’t thought of that. While the line play has been spotty at times Beavs need to keep him because he is doing a solid job. I think the biggest problem is them getting man handled at times.
Why would he leave? He’s paid well and is assistant or associate head coach I I believe. If he wanted to be in Arizona he wouldn’t of left for a lateral job.
As a Head Coach! That is not a lateral job man!
Go Beavs!
What are you smoking? I was referring to him coming to Corvallis not leaving.
This makes no sense! My original post, which you responded to, where I was saying to “lock up Coach M” (meaning keep him on staff however he needs to). He’s already in Corvallis! LOL Speaking of smoking?? Him leaving here to go to Arizona as the HC, is not a “lateral job” is what I’m saying! You said, “Why would he leave? He’s paid well and is assistant or associate head coach I I believe.” Even an “Assistant HC” position is not a “lateral” move to an actual HC position of a D1 PAC 12 program!
Go Beavs!
Why would he even be on the short list of head coaching candidates. Is that reported anywhere?
I think the Beavs Oline will bounce back after a bad Utah game and run the ball very effectively. Chance will have to do just enough to make them pay for selling out on the run.
Run D will be a big question mark coming in. I think you have to sell out on the run but unlike other QBs we’ve played mills can beat you. He is playing without two of his top WRs. Need to shutdown feheko and make someone else make plays. Their Oline didn’t give up a sack last game and only had 1 TFL. Hopefully the D can do bett6than Washington there. If they get into 3rd and short regularly the Beavs will be in trouble. Hopefully they can force a couple of turnovers.
Everyone above has given a good account of what has to happen for us to win. I give it a 25% Chance of happening.
We have an unproven QB playing behind a below average OL that has only excelled against bad DL’s. Our one strength on offense is negated by their strength on defense. Our defense is below average. Our ST unit does dumb things on a regular basis. Not a recipe for success.
Below average Oline? I would say they’re at least average and did decent against the huskies and well against the ducks who have a very talented front 7. Their strength on D is not stopping the run. They’re giving up over 200 yds a game on the ground. We should shred them unless Nolan can’t keep them honest. Agree on special teams tho.
The Ducks front 7 has been terrible against the run this year. It’s nice that we were able to take advantage, but the OL has been inconsistent in both run blocking and pass pro.
I’d love to be wrong on this!
The reference was to their physicality. Their size and strength were some of the best in the conference. Beavs’ offensive line wore them down in that game! Beavs Oline is also well coached with taking good leverage and angles and oh yeah, J2 doesn’t hurt either!
Go Beavs!
I think they’ve consistently improved each week but took a step back against Utah. That can be attributed to nolan not able to keep them honest in the passing game like lindgren said and being down to the 3rd string running back.
I’m pretty disappointed in Kipper. I thought he was going to show a hell of a lot more upside after getting so much PT last season. He looks like he is standing in cement on many of the outside pass rush moves.
I don’t want to speak for OHBeav but I think he’s referring to the line being, “below average” because of talent more than performance?
Oregon had said that the Beavs’ Oline was the best they were going to face coming into that game, I assume that was more due to the coaching. Say what you want, but this line has overachieved this season!
Go Beavs!
Or they are just underrated and didn’t have the stars right out of high school like 95% of OSUs roster.
Pass pro has been below average. The run blocking has been okay, but a lot of JJ’s yards are self-made.
I won’t argue with Coach M’s reputation, but we don’t have the same kind of talent or experience we have in the past. Kipper was way overrated. Hopefully the younger guys will develop and become mor consistent like Brandel and Lavaka were.
Does anyone have the scoop on what’s up with Hamilcar this year? He either has to be injured or is trying too hard not to get injured. He regularly gives up on plays and the effort just isn’t there. Anyone know what’s going on with him?
Nothing physical (injury wise). He has had a lot of double teams. He did have a lot more help up front last season which does make a world of difference. Even a guy like Aydon ate so much space but it’s tough for Backers to get pressure when your D Line is getting driven off the ball like their on roller skates and when there’s only 3 of ’em!
Go Beavs!
He’s still missing plays when he has the chance to make them, which was unlike him last year.
Last year aydon and Whitley could push the pocket and force the QB out towards Rashed. This year no one has been able to do that on a regular basis. Saying the effort isn’t there is opinion. I personally have seen him hustle and be fired up after plays but they don’t focus on him unless it’s a sack so it’s not very noticeable.
Just a side note:
Hamilcar kind of reminds me of former Steeler great, LB Joey Porter from CSU (similar frame). Long, rangy, muscular and athletic. Here’s the main difference I see. Porter was a converted D Lineman (D End), that converted to an Outside Backer in the NFL. He could take the physicality and meet it with physicality. Rashed is a great athlete that does lack size/strength for the position at the next level. I really hope he does well to finish his career here and gets a shot at the next level too but it just shows you how good players have to be to make the NFL!
Go Beavs!
He said he was dealing with MULTIPLE injuries a few weeks ago
There’s a difference between “injuries” and “playing hurt”! Everyone plays hurt in football. If he was “injured” it would be in the injury report.
Go Beavs!
I’ve noticed him dropping back in pass coverage alot more this year. Maybe he wants to show scouts what he can do, maybe the coaching staff thinks he can help out more there?? Who knows, but the play calling definitely hasn’t been letting him pin his ears back and go after the ball.
Sumlin fired!
Go Beavs!
Arizona doesn’t mess around when their coach is 9-20.
0-3 vs in state rivals
Finish to the Ball State/W.Michigan game had some shades of the Stanford band finish, but with more laterals.
https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1337862909230272514?s=09
Took me awhile to find the forward pass. Was 5 or so laterals in from the 32.7 to about 33.5 yard line. Not by too much. Is funny when some of the players, can’t even tell if could be bench guys, start to stop a player but never tackle him to ground amd final lateral allows the score that doesn’t count because of the forward pass. The flag is shown late on the telecast, so curious if the ref called it right away amd just too TV awhile to show,, or.if he called it a bit late maybe.
Watching UCLA outscore SC by 11 in the first half, anyone doubt that DTR would have been worth more than 3 pts vs nike?
FTD
Nothing like watching the PAC12 screw itself again
No game thread?
Hacked by Russians working for UO and who don’t want an OSU victory…
Aw Fuck. They should never back football games up directly to a basketball game! 9 minutes left in the Mizzou BBall game with 15-20 minutes(real time) before the Beavs kickoff. This BBall game can go another 30 minutes!
Go Beavs!
Game thread up.
