OK, Smith has a big stadium remodel in the works. That may help recruiting, but what are the most important areas in which he needs additional help? And who might provide that help?

Would you like to see more involvement of guys like Erickson, Petersen, even Riley? How could they impact Smith’s performance? Maybe it’s more straightforward, just get the right fresh face on the staff?

Let’s hear your thoughts on what’s needed to move the W total to more than 6 or 7.  Will making the right hire for PAC commissioner have any impact?  And, how ’bout those bitcoin and oil charts?

GO BEAVS!

I just dont see a stadium remodel helping recruiting. Not any more than just straight up winning games and having a team that gets more television exposure. All comes down to winning if you want to start seeing better recruits with your current staff.
Or….hire more dynamic receuiters and get some talent to kick start the winning. Either way, a new stadium wont matter to anybody except fans.
Peterson still works for UW, so i dont see him helping. Riley is loyal to his coaching staffs to a fault. Maybe Erickson is the right guy to give some tough advice about making the right coaching staff changes.

  2. The area he needs the most help is assistant coach recruiting. I think one of the main reasons why the PAC12 has fallen so far behind in the national recruiting game is assistant coach pay. You get what you pay for and top schools pay for results. Top PAC12 assistants make much less than their counterparts in the SEC. They have better recruiting apparatuses. More behind the scenes staff. Able to identify recruits earlier, faster and cast a wider net. Host camps that attract top guys. There are a lot of guys in the SEC who can’t coach at all but can attract recruits like no one else.

But all of that costs money and the money will only come with winning. With winning comes more donor money and sponsorship money.

So what can they do in the mean time?

Hire hungry up and coming assistants who will accept the lower pay. Guys who are looking to move up in the coaching ranks. Which means they’ll need to produce on the recruiting trail and have those players produce on the field. Guys like Brent Brennan. His work helped him land the SJSU job. Assistants who have success here will likely be given extra credit since it’s a “tough” location.

Problems with that are that OSU likes to project a family atmosphere and turnover is considered “bad”.

Tinkle quietly made that choice by promoting Stewart to assistant coach.

As Whiskey stated on the last thread, I think the program is doomed to mediocrity at best as long as we’re trying to do the same thing as everyone else with less money and no sunny weather. The success OSU has had in the modern era came from DE’s JC recruiting and Riley’s offense being different than what teams were used to seeing.

Hire Brennan Marion away from Hawaii and let him work with Lindgren on installing different “Go-Go” packages that take advantage of our run blocking strength and RB pipeline. Or go to a power run game that capitalizes on the same strengths and the fact that we have the #1 FB recruit in the country on the roster.

You CAN be successful as a copycat with airtight execution and a good culture, but it’s incredibly rare.

JS needs to be as innovative as Chip Kelly in some form of strategy/gameplanning. It needs to be so unorthodox and uncanny that other teams can’t figure out quite how to deal with the system because it so different.

He may try the Stanford model of the classic road-grader bullying offensive line, but I think that becomes difficult to match with the type of Oline recruits needed.
He could try the air raid offense like Leach, but USC has already shifted to this offense and will command those athletes to run it better.

I think he is already approaching his own version of Chip Kelly by being overly aggressive at odd junctures in many games. His MO is to show a team how to be a mad scientist without apologies and go for it aggressively. Once he joins this with a dual qb offensive mesh and wide open RPO dual qb wizardry, then he might be the innovator we have hoped for since Prothro left for UCLA.

Polynesian talent can be the difference for west coast teams needing linemen and athletes. I think a big push should be made to open up the Hawaii pipeline and begin bringing in islanders as well as Oregon high school walk-ons.

    • Totally agree on the need to improve our recruiting of Polynesian players, from Hawaii, America Samoa and Utah especially. We had some short lived success with that with Seumalo/Banker, as well as the Sitake/Tuiaki tandems. Under Smith, it hasn’t gone as well. Utah and Oregon seem to be grabbing more than their share of the big guys, especially on defense and the OL.
Coach Joe Salavea helped turn that around for oregon. He did well at WSU before that. Maybe a Coach Joe D coordinator position could lure him away, since he’s been passed over by Cristobal on multiple occasions now. Or an up and coming polynesian coach like Coach AhYou from Vandy?

      • Polynesians tend to be mormon and are big on culture. That makes Utah tough to compete with even though technically they aren’t a mormon school. I definitely remember hearing the kids talk about sitake and tuiaki and how cool it was he was a DC. I believe he is the first tongan head coach and maybe DC? Coach legi doesn’t seem to be pulling his weight as far as recruiting goes.

They got faamoe which was a big pull out of Utah and we’ll have to wait and see about the kaufusi kid if he comes back after mission.

        • Is Smith religious? Never heard him say much like that. I’ve been around enough Mormons to have heard things like “at least he is Christian”. So I think a religious coach helps in those regards.

          • Pat Bailey and Scott Rueck are very open about their Christianity, Smith not so much. Pretty sure I’ve heard there is a weekly Bible study that all three attend, maybe at Bailey’s home.
Culture was mentioned in regard to Poly’s, a big part of that is FAMILY. Smith sure checks the box there.
Ohiobeav has pointed out the need for a “pipeline”, seems to me the foundation is in place but the big missing piece is a solid point person. Banker sure had that reputation, along with the others mentioned here.

        • Yes, and i forgot to mention coach Chad from the GA staff too. Except often what I would hear is a player would be down to OSU and WSU, and ultimately choose WSU because coach Joe is somewhat legendary with Polynesian players. That’s why oregon snagged him away from WSU. It was a good hire for them.

    • Do you see any way Pat Casey could help Smith?
Evaluating job candidates? Pep talks? Pushing Sports Psychology/Visualization?
I’m not sure Pat could be effective without full time involvement/control.

      • Likely a combination, but getting players who have that potential is so related to reputation and W’s. To get those W’s did Casey have the luxury of time and expectations which may not have been “low” but weren’t demanding? Reminds me of Brennan Marion, mentioned above. A really intriguing possibility, glad you pointed him out.

      • They were elite recruits. Only Adley wasn’t an elite prospect coming out of high school. Madrigal had been on several team USA squads. Larnach was a top high school prospect. Would have gotten drafted high if they didn’t demand so much bonus money.

Grenier was actually the top prospect in the 2015 signing class. #41 overall high school prospect in the nation.

  5. OT – saw the video of TB (Tequila Buzz) throwing the lombardi trophy and stumbling and grinning. Its always surprising to me how skinny he looks, but I think his training emphasizes flexibility and diet discipline. I think he’s pretty mum on his off season training(?).

  6. Yes, and i forgot to mention coach Chad from the GA staff too. Except often what I would hear is a player would be down to OSU and WSU, and ultimately choose WSU because coach Joe is somewhat legendary with Polynesian players. That’s why oregon snagged him away from WSU. It was a good hire for them.

I was just thinking about an outside the box name who could really benefit OSU. Keikio Kalani. He’s from America Samoa and is a recruiting mentor for pretty much every kid coming over from there. He also was RB coach and recruiting coordinator at both Delaware State and Missouri Southern the past few years. He’s about as connected as you can get with recruiting the Pacific Islands. OSU would be be step up resume wise, but also more accesible for trips back home.
I think he’d fill quite a few needs for OSU. I think of him as sortof the step in the pipeline that comes before Coach Joe.
Just a less experienced college coach. Very motivated though

    • I honestly don’t think RBs need a great coach because so much of their success is god given ability. There is pass blocking and and a few other things but those aren’t hard to teach. I prefer a great recruiter at this position over experience personally. Jermar was already really good straight out of high school. The idea of keiki is interesting. Kind of funny that keiki is Hawaiian for child. Maybe a different translation in samoa.

      • Turns out I was messing his name up. Keikiokalani Misipeka is his full name. I’m probably missing some apostrophes too.
I found an article from his most recent coaching stint. Seemed to lead to a pretty significant infusion of Pacific Island players at Southern Missouri State, after he took his head coach Jeff Sims on an offseason trip to the islands. It loils like their entire 2019 claas was kids from Samoa or Hawaii. Crazy.

But a year later, Sims was fired by SMMU(Dec 2020). Seems Sims had been the head coach a couple of years earlier at a JUCO where a player died of heat exhaustion at a Summer football workout he lead. So SMMU decided it would be a good idea to sever ties with the guy and his staff, and Misipeka is out of a job. And all of those kids are now stuck at SMMU I’m assuming.

  7. Eggers, a week behind angry, asks “Who donated the $50 million ?”
He’s certain it was not Phil or the Resers. Recounts a half hour discussion with Barnes and weighs in on the expansions impact on recruiting, saying, “The completion of Reser helps him (Smith) immeasurably in recruiting, but it also places additional pressure on the coach to win now.”

  8. Beavers playing Arizona. Sort of hanging in the game. Down 30-23 with 5 left in the first. The Beavs are just such a poor shooting team, it’s hard for them to stay with the better teams. Also, they have somehow given up three rebounds on missed foul shots so far!

  9. Good guys lose 70-61. I think the announcers just said Arizona went to the line 34 times compared to 10 times for the Beavs.
Beavs shot 37.5% and were outrebounded by 13. Only 5 turnovers, yipee!

I thought Giovanni Hunt played a great game. I can’t fault them for the effort they gave but everytime they closed to within 4, AZ would come back with 5-6 points. .beavers couldn’t get over the hump and shooting was bad but had good looks. Zona is a good team with some very talented players so you gotta be on your game to beat them but the beavers were off putting the ball in the hole.

Eddie Payne, Jay John, Ritchie McKay, Craig Robinson, Wayne Tinkle: all nice enough guys I suppose but all ridiculously underwhelming at the Pac12 level. Tinkle’s only advantage at this point is the reality of the Pac12 slide into the worst major conference. Also, overall talent in the conference is never going to be what it was. He has a chance to luck into a nice run now that no elite talent is staying on the west coast.
Tinkle needs to surround himself with recruiters and be a figurehead. Let one of the assistants run the timeouts, set-up plays, and finally get a true point guard after 8 years. Good grief Charlie Brown.

Just enough talent and grit to lose by 9; as usual. Don’t care, didn’t watch and my life is not hindered in the least by it.

  11. Did Chryst withdrawl from the transfer portal? I thought he’d entered but don’t see him in it. I’m guessing right now they have at least 5 scholarships just based off transfers coming and going.

  12. OT: JJ Watt leaves Texans. QB Watson wants out..Cooks must be frustrated to be on such a losing, dysfunctional NFL team after stints at NO, NE, and LA. Hopefully his top end speed gets him one more trade to be a complimentary piece on a good+ team. He may have to take a pay cut as his production hasn’t been high end. But a return to LA to give Stafford a deep threat would be fun to watch. If Watson leaves Houston, and Cooks can’t get a trade to a competitive franchise, maybe a good time to retire given his concussion history.

    • Cooks is going to have to take a pay cut this year. He’ll probably get cut by Houston since his salary isn’t guaranteed and it’ll be all cap savings by cutting him. Houston is over the cap now and even releasing Watt doesn’t get them under the cap by much. If I’m him, you kind of want to be cut if Watson isn’t going to be the QB.

Cooks will likely sign a one year deal at a reduced rate due to the cap shrinking. Then next offseason sign his final NFL deal for as much guaranteed money he can get. The cap is expected to get back to at least the 2019 season levels and maybe more. NFL is about to sign a new media deal worth a lot.

    • Was told by a source that Moevao is one of the many people who have applied for the RB job.
Also, was told the guy I mentioned, Misipeka, has applied for the recruiting position that was left vacant by Moala.

      • 2
        1

I like Moevao, a lot, and he connects well with Polys. BUT, this brings up the nepotism/inbreeding argument.
Brennan Marion looks soooo good at this point.

          • The reason I say this is because there were rumors back when Manti Te’o has his fake girlfriend scandal, that Lyle was the voice on the other side of the phone line, pretending to be Lennay.
i don’t think that was ever 100% verified, but Lyle was definitely involved in that whole mess.
I don’t get the impression he has ever been the most mature/all business type of guy.
i remember him also getting into hot water for crashing a stolen golf cart at OSU one year. He seems to like mischief.
It’s not a reason to dislike him, but just don’t know if he’s the right mentality for Pac12 coaching. Maybe he’s matured?

          • Might make him more likeable to recruits. The kind of big kid fun coach that kids can relate too. Honesty makes me like him more but I can see where you’re coming from about maturity for a coach. I would assume he’s matured from college days.

          • …just don’t know if he’s the right mentality for Pac12 coaching. Maybe he’s matured?
Is there any reason at all to believe Smith could corral a “big kid fun” coach?

          • @Bleedorange
Ya got me there, guess I’m a glass half empty guy in wondering if Smith could control a “big kid” coach.
Still, I’d prefer new blood eventhough Lyle has a lot going for him.

        • Oob, do you know if Brennan Marion has applied? I’m all for some new blood being brought into the program rather than the nepotism route. We have plenty of guys on staff that fit the “one of ours” mold. Get too much of that and you get stale.

          • Not RB but I think after this year if there isn’t a large improvement on D you have to think about getting rid of Tibs. The coach Joe idea that Nicebeav mentioned is intriguing. You would hurt the dux and improve OSUs recruiting. I’m just not sure if he is actually a very good coach and or ready to be a DC at a power 5.

          • @Bleedorange.2
I believe you are the first to point directly to Tibs and the need for improvement on D. Really expected folks to jump on Tibs much sooner in this thread.
I’m still on the Tibs Train but admit that results next season appear to be make or break.

EDIT/ADD: As you point out below, Bill has often advocated a change away from Tibs; I was referring to this thread where the question was what kind of help does Smith need and it took till you mentioned it for Tibs to come up.

          • I think Bill has been an advocate for change. The thing of it is you have to look at it realistically. The job is a hard job that many established guys don’t really want. It was a mess when Tibs got here. OSU doesn’t have the money to buy out contracts and unfortunately have to offer longer contracts to lure better coaches. Now with better depth and overall talent I think he needs to make strides and if not a move has to be considered. I think he has 1 more year after this on his contract but I’m not sure. He seems to make very good in game adjustments. It was disappointing to see the lack of disruptive plays last season after doing such a good job the year before. If Whitley can stay healthy he had no more excuses. I think if they can be in the top half in the conference in overall defense then that maybe saves his job. Sometimes I think teams are too quick to axe coaches and that leaves them in constant transition.

          • I’ve been beating the Don’t Renew Tibesar drum for months. “It’s a hard job” is just an excuse. Yes, it’s a hard job, but it’s not like there aren’t DC’s that have turned around bad units before. The defense has been in the bottom quartile every year of TT’s tenure and there was no improvement this year.

If you can’t get results after three seasons, it’s time to let someone else try. I hope he proves me wrong next year.

          • 1
            1

Bray and Cookus are the only two OSU alumni in key positions, and they’re two of our key (remaining) recruiters. I don’t think we need more, but I also don’t think they’re holding us back.

          • I may be missing something, but I don’t see much reason for the D to improve next year with no real upgrades to Dline, Morris’s promise never fulfilled unfortunately due to innury, so he’s gone, and CBs not clearly improved. Maybe the transfer CB is an upgrade, but still, doesn’t seem like enough to expect the D to turn around.

There’s some good LBs sandwiched between some pretty underwhelming bread. Not a recipe for significant upgrade in overall D performance.

          • @ObjCritic
            Reasons for the D to improve next year, beyond having more time under Tibs;
Gumbs, Whittley(?), Oladapo, Roberts, Speights, Hughes-Murray, Reichner, Sandberg, maybe Briski
all guys who missed time but have shown potential.

          • At least according to PFF, the weak links in the defense last year were Arnold, LB’s not named Roberts, and Dunn.

We have a few JC safeties that could step up. Julian looked pretty good late in the year, I think two JC’s sat out, and Arnold could always get better.

LB’s are a puzzle. We have plenty of talent there. They just need to execute.

The transfer CB looks good. The other spot is a question mark.

      • While I am not the biggest fan of Baldwin, he did bring us the Higgins brothers given his past coaching relationship with their father. Baldwin was frustrating as sometimes he would have these great play calls where there was some imagination and creativity. Like what he did in the 2016 Civil War. But those play calls were so infrequent and then he was go back and call another inside zone or something so unoriginal that was so painful to watch. I do wish him good luck given what he did bring to OSU as well as the fact that he was a good solidier when he got demoted by GA.

  13. Well we now know the ducks will have a new starting qb next year. Shough in the portal. I thought I saw brown entered the draft or something. It’ll be a good qb battle with two guys that have zero college experience.

    • Brown was a three year starter at BC before going into the portal. He did suffer season ending knee injuries after his freshman and junior seasons. I don’t think it will matter as the coaches have basically promised the job to Thompson, which is the reason why Shough is transferring. He knew he won’t be given the chance because a five-star will always get those opportunities.

      • 1
        1

Spot on. It’ll be Thompson with Brown as #2.
Did Shough diss Cristobal and Moorhead by failing to mention them by name in his final tweet?

Funny to read reports of his last season. They speak of how well he did in the first three games till falling to the Beavs and Cal. Does anyone look at how weakened those first three opponents were?

      • 1
        1

Maybe you’re thinking of C J Verdell, he has announced plans to return.
I believe he was never 100% after being nailed by a Beaver; was it Oladapo?

  14. 4
    3

Payton, Kelley, and tinkle seemed to all play well in their games. Kelley played limited minutes because of foul trouble but had 3 blocks 2 rebounds and 4 points. Payton had 8 points 6 rebounds and 7 assists I think. Tinkle had 4 points and 1 steal and 1 assist.

  15. 2
    8

Tyler Shough for the Ducks entering the transfer portal. No great loss I suppose although I did enjoy the prospects of OSU beating the Ducks again next season with Shough potentially as their starting QB. I thought he was supposed to be the next Marcus Mario-TAH….LOL.

Some of previous posts regarding American-made products got me to looking at Danner boot products in Portland Oregon. I typically get some synthetic-material hiking boot with whatever waterproofing tech they brand and offer. Salomon was a previous favorite, though the last pair the gore-tex didn’t seem to perform that well. Oboz is my most recent example, are really pretty comfortable, Montana-based, though they’ve moved production overseas. The soles don’t seem to grip at all on wet rock at all and the boot doesn’t breathe as well as some. I usually go through hiking boots about every two-three years.

So I ordered some leather Danner leather hiking boots. Out of the box, the fit and comfort was amazing, and the break in should be limited. The boots feel really light and I’m looking forward to returning to a Vibram sole. While their initial cost seems high in comparison to the other brands I’ve recently been using, there’s a lot of value to them – American- Portland made, leather, comfort, weight, quality, 365 day warranty, re-soleable.

It made be think how “cool” it would be if OSU eschewed the Nike model, and worked with Danner to provide leather cleats/turf shoes to men’s football, la crosse, men and women’s soccer, and baseball. An actual custom product made in Portland as opposed to Nike’s “custom” mass manufactured-over-seas shoes. There could even be a natural leather version for the old school approach I think OSU wants to convey, and locally-made fits the “family” model, add Danner advertising in Re-modeled Reser. You could probably even custom-fit the shoes for each scholar-athlete.

But this all just shows how old I am cause no kid is going to think these are cool in comparison to Nike or Addida. Until maybe they tried them on.

And what if in leather cleats/turf shoes the football players blocked and tackled? : )

    • 2
      1

Which model Danners did you get? I’ve been using their Mountain Lights for 30+ years.
Like anything, good maintenance will make ’em last…….use a good leather dressing and never try to dry out quickly by a fire.

Gotta figure the downvotes are opinions that Danner would never fly with today’s players but there is something to be said for “dreaming big”. I agree that it would be a neat deal if the right people pushed it. Still way too out of the box for OSU, I suppose.

“And what if in leather cleats/turf shoes the football players blocked and tackled? : )”
Yeah, and what if there were fewer injuries as a result?

      • I got the Mountain Pass, which is a lighter boot. Less ankle support maybe, but I think they’ll be good.

I agree it wouldn’t fly with today’s players. But I know many here are tired of Nike (even to the point of suspecting injury problems due to Nike shoes. The only other game seems like Addidas, but I don’t know if they’re much different than Nike, with the exception that they have smaller market share.

“Neat deal.” I saw what you did there…

        • The mountain pass looks similar to the mountain light that and that’s a good thing. After you put enough miles on them you can send them back to Danner to be recrafted for a fraction of what a new pair would cost. It’s a hell of a deal.

Went and glanced at my boot shelf in my office and I currently have 8 pairs of Danners, 4 hunting and 5 work. Also have a pair of Meindl hunting boots and a pair of Georgia Romeos. Nothing Chinese, but the Meindls are Eastern European and the Georgias are Dominican Republic.

          • “After you put enough miles on them you can send them back to Danner to be recrafted for a fraction of what a new pair would cost. It’s a hell of a deal.” That’s what I love. Also, the 365 day warranty is pretty nice feature.

The Mtn Pass may not have quite as much ankle support, but the relatively wide stitched-on sole provides a good base, wider than my other, synthetic hikers. I think that will provide good stability. The feel is pretty amazing; light and almost like not wearing boots.

  17. WBB:
Gals face Stanford at 6 this evening, streamed by The School.
Meantime, on the team twitter, you’ve got time to hear Scott talk about his love for coaching and answer a question on the puzzle of this season. He mentions “identity”; you can kind of see us creating an identity that’s more consistent with what Oregon State has always been…the defense growing, the ball moving quicker and quicker offensively…

Now, lets see if Taylor Jones can avoid foul trouble,…..lets see if Talia continues to shine, ……lets see if TO’s can be limited to less than the season avg of 15.6.

    What are y’all looking for?

    https://pac-12.com/live/oregon-state-university

  18. 10

Lady Beavers looking good but down 43-40 at halftime. Stanford hits 9 3-pointers in the 1st half. Taylor Jones is showing offer her short-range jumpers with 3 inside of 10 feet and has 12 points I think. Aleah playing well and the Beavers getting contributions from everyone including Goforth and Samuels. Stanford must be shooting around 55% for the 1st half (I’m just guessing but from what I’ve seen, I say 55% is pretty close). I’m not sure what the Beavers are shooting but they need to get a little better on the boards and keep playing hard. Finally, Beavers need to rotate on the defensive side and not leave Stanford’s 3 pointer shooters wide open. Given how Stanford shot the first half, it’s amazing the Beavers are only down by 3.

  19. 2
    6

Well, the Beavers getting whipped in the second half outscored 36-16. Beavers can’t buy a bucket and missed 3 consecutive point blank shots and that was the beginning of the end. Cardinals played solid defense in the second half but the Beavers just missed too many opportunities the second half. Beavers must have shot around 30% for the game and Stanford probably 52-55%. Beavers looked as bad in the second half as they looked good in the first half. Effort was there kind of like men’s game vs. AZ the other night, but they just couldn’t buy a bucket. Goforth had a nice game and so did Taylor Jones…not too much production from anyone else except maybe Aleah.

  20. 8
    7

Another bad weekend for beavis. Women absolutely torched and men have lost 4 of last 6. Men won’t make it dancing and Rueck in real danger of not making it either for the first time in a while. Change of fortunes or pendulum if you will. Tinkle now under .500 again and will need to figure out how to stop Remi Martin and Rueck just doesn’t have the talent this year.

        • 1
          6

No doubt the beavers miss destiny’s skill set and production. Her up tempo style of play was fun to watch although she had occasional tendencies to play outside of Rueck’s system. Kennedy Brown’s defensive skills also a big loss due to her injury. Good news is that virtually all players will return next season and with more experience and the return of Kennedy Brown, I think this team will be ready to make a solid run at the Pac12 title. The future looks bright with Goforth, TVO, SS, Kennedy B, TJ, Corosdale, etc. This season has been a rebuild of sorts due to injury and new players but there is plenty of talented players on this team. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a player like Jas Simmons to transfer in the off season though. I would also like some final decision on Acquino’s status. She would be a tremendous add to this team if she is cleared to play at some point. She looks silky smooth in warm ups and at 6’8″, she would be a game changer for the beavers.

          • 7
            2

Acquinos career is over. She has been on the bench for 3 years and will never play a second due to her heart. Rueck did the right thing by honoring her scholarship

Where we keep getting belly whumped has been a mix of of facilities, recruiting mostly because of the play on the field over the last decade plus. There is no history or tradition of success.

Corvallis is a tiny hamlet surrounded by sheep pastures with shitty weather, especially compared to places in or southern california or Arizona, and is so much smaller than all other pac12 cities besides Pullman.

That will always have an appeal to some but never the majority.

Very few kids grow up nationally wanting to be Oregon State Beavers, but thousands want to play division 1 football.

Going to have to keep scraping the barrel for transfers and Walk-Ons until the team can win some games and make it look fun to play there, instead of a cold and miserable four year slog in the middle of nowhere with no hope of a post season.

    • Casey and Rueck have been able to recruit, but they also won consistently, which I think overcame the other factors.

There is positive history and tradition at OSU with baseball, recent consistent success in women’s basketball, but the success of men’s football (some Riley years, Erickson peak) and basketball (Ralph Miller) are too far in the rear view mirror for today’s recruits.

Just think, this past season, OSU was going to celebrate the 20th(!) anniversary of the Fiesta Bowl team. 20 years since a major bowl, with the next biggest bowl games being the Alamo and Sun Bowl. Two near misses at the Rose Bowl. It would be interesting to see the Beavers PAC record since the Rodgers bros left, seems like that was the last peak.

The stadium remodels should spark some interest in recruiting, simply because its new, people like new things, and it indicates an investment in the sport. But winning in league and going to bowls and tournaments will mean more for men’s sports. I have zero interest in visiting, much less living in, Tuscaloosa, but for some reason college football players do…

    • A quick check, since 2011 when the PAC 10 became the PAC 12, looks like the Beavers football team is 25-63, with an Alamo bowl loss in 2012 (Texas, 4 points), a Hawaii bowl win in 2013 (BSU). Seven years since a wining season or bowl game.

It seems like Smith is getting solid 3* recruits and some good QBs, a winning season is due. The inability to land D line players is the biggest hurdle to a winning season in my view. Need a few Stephen Paea-type players.

  22. Nicebeaver, (and I’m sure you are) nothing personal – a tiny whinge – while most appreciative of your good work – I signed up for the monthly donation – and after my recent annual eye exam which verified healthy vision – I apologetically say I find it difficult to read the dark blue text against the black background on the twitter recruiting thread. Mea culpa!

    • I don’t think I have any control over how the twitter feed displays, from my end.
It might be related to the plugin Angry uses to put the feed on his page. Not sure if he would have control over the font colors, but maybe it can be tweaked on that end?

    • I don’t have any similar problem viewing NiceBeavers tweets, they are very readable for me. I use Firefox.
Just checked and there are two ways I can access Nice’s wisdom, from the link here on ab and at: https://twitter.com/BeavRecruiting
Either one gives me the same result, clear black text on white display and good info.

Something about Montana? Big (Blue) Sky Country?
      Good luck.

  23. Just my 2 cents, if I had to guess which direction Smith will go with the RB coach hire, I think it will be Chris Braasfield making a return to Corvallis.
Not my top choice, but not a terrible one either.

    • Smiths coaching circle is fairly small so a pure outside hire seems unlikely. I think only Adams is the only one who didn’t have some connection to Smith prior.

    • Assistant Head Coach at SMU tells me he’s probably solid on the coaching side. Wasn’t he one of our better recruiters under Riley (not that that’s saying a whole lot)?

      • He was named a top 50 recruiter in 2012. He recruited TX for OSU and currently coaches ST. Has had some good results with his players recently too.

      • On paper her recruited well, but I dont remember his guys performing as well as expected. Ward was pretty good, but was lost behind Stormy on the depth chart, for whatever reason.

        • Never understood why woods was a 4 year starter. Was very average at everything and wasn’t very good in the open field as he would always get tackled 1 on 1.

          • I don’t think he was the same after his concussion.

Hell, in the Alamo Bowl, he was good for 6 YPC, then they stopped giving him the ball. He was good, not great, but if he and Ward were better used in tandem, OSU would have been fine. Riley was really tended to give one RB the ball and he did that even after Woods’ concussion.

    • Never was that crazy about Bradfield back then and now don’t think would be better. Would feel like a Riley loyalty rehire. Would rather go younger, with someone whose star is rising.

Anyone else hearing noise about Tyler Shough talking with the Beavers about a transfer? If that’s true, I guess that would be kind of interesting although I’ve not read anything in social media suggest that it is. NiceBeaver, have you heard or ready anything through the grapevine about Shough talking with the Beavers?

  25. Any Oregon area angrybeavs sustain damage from the 2021 winter death storm? I had an oak tree fall on my shop. im currently in sun river with the kids and get a text from my neighbor with a picture of the carnage. It doesn’t look super bad, and at least it didn’t do the hot knife through butter thing and slice through the roof like you see from time to time. Oh well that’s why I have insurance.
Oh and it also fell on my newer ARE truck canopy, should have have put it back in the building before I left, oops.
And the power is still out apparently.

    • I was in my garage earlier and heard a large crashing sound outside, lasted for a good 5-10 seconds. Looked outside and the neighbor behind me lost a huge limb off of the giant oak tree in their backyard. Right on their roof. Missed my garage by about 10 ft.
Beem hearing crashing tree branches all around the neighborhood today

        • Today is a total war zone around SE PDX with the tree damage. No power or internet, so a forced day off. Decided to go have my morning coffee outside and just watch nature do it’s thing. Have witnessed so many falling trees and branches this morning. It’s pretty impressive. Trees that have been through years of storms are just being demolished by all of the heavy ice. Sun is out now, so it’s cool to see everything thaw right in front of us

          • Update, getting the extra snow load rating for my building may have saved my ass. The tree section that hit it is way bigger then it looks, like a lot bigger. Had one hole in the roof where a branch punched in between 2 purlins. Had a purlin fail by splitting along a line of knots in the board. It messing up the about half the roof metal and 3 pieces of siding metal. Gutters are messed up. Trusses look perfect and the tree is mostly still sitting on top of the building. The tree is about a 30 inch by 75 foot tall oak that the top half broke out of and fell on my shop. Adjuster is calling tomorrow, they are not coming to take a look at the damage(covid) and want me to pick a contractor and send them an estimate and they’ll give me give me their quote after that.
Any advise on the insurance part of this mess is appreciated as I’ve never filed a home owners claim before.

Our neighbors have 6 50-ft tall fir trees in their back yard very close to the property lines. If they fall, they’ll take out my living room, bathroom and a bedroom. Never understood why people plant tall fir trees in a residential neighborhood with some many homes….out in the country on some acreage makes sense…..residential neighborhood….not so much.

        • Yep, when looking at property the first thing I look at is the neighbor’s trees and most common wind directions. Big selling point for me was our current place does not look in danger unless there’s a freak wind storm. There are some big trees (one a giant fir), but they all should blow and fall in other directions.

        • The firs in my area are standing tall except for a few branches. They can take ice and wind pretty good. It’s the hardwoods especially oak that get smoked by that combo. They don’t like to flex much.

      • I can’t change it, so no reason to dwell to much. The tree is actually on my neighbors property, its a farm. After I built the shop he came by to ask why I didn’t ask him to cut that tree down. I just didn’t think what happened would happen and I really didn’t want to bother him about it. I went for the most likely scenario which was other trees falling into it. I get south winds 90% of the time even with ice storms. This was a big north wind with ice that took it right into the shop. I gambled and lost. But at least that tree can’t fall on it more then once.

Pathetic watching Ethan getting his pocket picked over and over by showing the ball to the defender rather than protecting it. You’re not going to win games with high turnovers and poor shooting. It was very reminiscent of the loss to Zona. I don’t know how many chippies the beaver missed….I lost count at 6 point blank shots. Oh well, next.

      • They lost 4 games by a combined 15 points last season. Chipster made some comment in year 1 about how it would take some time for them to flush out the old culture and install the right one. They might be trending up.

  26. Yeah, it really was something. I’m in SE PDX and we’ve had freezing rain off and on the past few days. Pretty much everything is coated in about 2-4″ of ice. The branches all around the neighborhood would crack every time the wind blew, and if anything fell it was like a domino effect where everything below would shatter and fall too. Lots of property damage around here. Gonna be interesting when these sheets of ice start sliding off of the roofs

-Some good thoughts by Bill on Smith’s need for help in recruiting assistant coaches
-Discussion mainly focused on offense, Beav in OH suggested “Hire Brennan Marion away from Hawaii” sounds good to me, if Smith won’t go wing-T then Marion’s Go-Go is OK too.
-Appeal to recruit more Poly players
-ObjCritic says, “Pat Casey for AD? :)
-Eggers certain that neither Phil or the Resers donated the $50mill
-Mention that Moevao may have applied for the RB coach position
-oob reconfirms his seat on the Tibs Train
-Eggers points out flaws in coaching of Cristobal/Morehead in the Tyler Shough situation
-American made products discussed, Danners highlighted
      -A couple sad basketball games

What have I missed?………Oh yeah, a lack of stock tips and music mentions..

      • Sweet, thanks. Pat Casey at AD the most exciting of those…I think he nixed that in the past, but he has the makeup for it, and I bet he’s bored.

          • To get Brennan Marion I think they’d either have to name him OC (and Lindgren is doing pretty well) or somehow give him a title “Special Offensive Assistant and Run Game Coordinator.” Then, plan on him staying no more than three years when he’s hired away as an OC. In the meantime, get his input on offensive strategy and sets.

It ought to be possible to coax him from UH for a PAC job. Hell, he could continue to recruit Hawaii and the south pacific.

  27. Little late to the Danner Convo but does anyone have the Trail 2650? Looking for a a traveling shoe and this looks to check all of my boxes. Wish I would have found these before I bought my Vasque hikers. They’re great on trails but a tad heavy for lots of city walking and transporting.

  28. Was told Coach Smith has made a decision on the recruiting position vacated by JR Moala. Will be an internal candidate filling that role, although I’m not sure who specifically.
Wonder if that means he’a close to naming a RB coach too.

    • It will be one of the current grad assistants. My 1st guess is Kendrick Van Ackeren, followed by Taylor Richards. We should know for sure soon enough.

The rest of the non-con schedule has been released, there’s a trip south to face the Anteaters for a weekend late April. More here:

The new kid at the GT puts up a pretty good piece on Mitchell Verburg. His operation wasn’t the usual Tommy John Surgery. He’s close with Kevin Abel, they worked through recovery together. Good mention of advice from Nate Yeskie at the time of the injury.

Ducks WBB mugging Stanford defensively and finally Stanford gets its first two fts of the game. It looks more like a football game than basketball.

      • Announcer commented near the end of the game, “you could hit someone in the head with a hammer before they’d call a foul.” there were 10 jump balls in the game as players were getting knocked around like bowling pins. Competitive game but the ducks couldn’t close out the game.

        • 2
          2

That’s absurd. Enforce the rules. Hell, why call it if someone steps out of bounds? Traveling? No worrries, “just play basketball.” Make a basket after the buzzer? Count it.

          • I’ve noticed in a lot of games when a player goes to the floor to possess the ball and they move or slightly roll, it’s no longer called as traveling which is crap. It should be traveling or when a player gets knocked to the floor and no call and that happens a lot. Pac 12 officiating is just bad.

        • Why should anyone care about the game and the outcomes when officiating is this poor? The outcomes are likely to be disingenuous. NCAA baseball went WWF, now WBB?

What a heart breaking loss for the ducks.. Down two with 9 seconds left and Pao-Pao drives toward the basket, loses her footing, trips and travels. Stanford runs the clock out 63-61. Ducks had 5 point lead but collapsed the last minute to lose a in a devastating way. Truly devastating…..tough luck ducks.
