  1. Very limited knowledge on the baseball squad and their opponents. Looking for wins obviously but more concerned about defensive percentage, impactful starting pitching, and finding reliable bullpen guys. Go Beavs!!!

  2. Anyone have predictions for this weekend? The schedule should be relatively easy, but I expect lots of rust from such a long offseason.

Kansas State: projected 8th out of 9 in Big 12
New Mexico: projected 4th out of 7 in MWC
    Gonzaga: 6-10 in 2020

Like I said the first series last year, if we don’t sweep we’re not a good team.
I don’t know enough about each team to say, but based on pedigree I’d say the Beavs win 3 out of 4.

  3. BIG JIM on the broadcast today, helping (teaching in his gentle way) Jon W.
Not clear if they are actually in AZ.
Only chance we’ll learn worthwhile small details is if Jon allows BIG JIM to make frequent comments.

    • Lol, yeah didn’t realize how hard it is for Big Jim to get his thoughts in. I get it that they can’t see everything but just wait a second instead of guessing!

  4. Canham had said he’d use the pen in these first few games, expected each reliever to get a couple appearances in the first two weekends.
And yet, he lets Abel go past 70 pitches to give up the first K-State hit…..and two runs.

    • 1
      1

Well, get the first man on and then can’t execute a sacrifice bunt not that it mattered because the following two hitters K. Can’t win games if you can’t get em on, can’t get em over, and can’t get em in.

      • Big Jim even said this is where Casey had great execution from his teams and it put pressure on the opponents. Should have been runner on 2nd with 1 out and two chances for a base hit and RBI. How many games were won in late innings just by execution when PC was the coach… hopefully they can get that same mojo going.

  5. BASEBALL: K-State had a lot going for them; many/all of their guys played summer ball and they had an outstanding arm on the mound, tip the hat. However, and as much as many have expected little from the Beavs offense, you can’t give a decent opponent 7 BB, 2 HBP, and commit 2 errors and expect to win. This team doesn’t have the bats to overcome that sort of shooting yourself in the foot, especially when being unable to lay down a timely bunt. Can’t complain about only 5 LOB……….except when 3 came in one inning, and after filling the bags with no one out!
Claunch is gonna feel it tonight, hope he’s not hampered tomorrow.

EDIT/ADD: New Mexico had some pretty good radio announcers in the past, here’s a link for tomorrow…just sayin’
    https://golobos.com/listen-to-live-events/

WBB: Good Gals by 25 over USC. Told y’all to watch the gals following baseball, I listened to most of the game and it sounds like Rueck is getting the team to peak at the right time. If you’ve got a heart you have to love Noelle. Walkon with few minutes but so enthusiastic, a real team player. Nice to see her hit another three and at a clutch moment too.

I watched all of it and the beavers shot the lights out. TVO looked like best player on the floor and Allah and Jones had solid games too. USC a decent team but the beavers just overwhelmed them. Turnovers still an issue but if this team can put together a late season run in the P12 tourney, you never know. Just watched UCLA slobber knocker the ducks and they look awfully tough. I hope the beavers are just competitive against the Bruins. The ducks were absolutely awful against UCLA. i’m not overly concerned about baseball. Titles are never won the first game of the year. As I recently pointed out, you gotta be able to score runs to win…

    Y’all call yourselves baseball fans??……..LOL
Glad I stuck with the Beavs broadcast, BIG JIM, ever the teacher, in good form today.
Beavs putting lots of ball in play, big difference in opposition pitching this time around.
Luck ‘o the Beavs favorable today.
    B4, 5-0 good guys.

  7. Any ab’s in the ballpark today?
I know beavergopher wasn’t, and we all know wannab is tied up working on the yacht. Some comments about pitch velo have made me think some of y’all are on site watching. Would like to know if anyone has input on the vibe surrounding the team….both days.
    Thanks

MBB is so frustrating, they just can’t shoot the damn basketball! It’s not really a case of being unable to get looks. Down by 7 at home to CU with 7:30 left. They must be shooting under 40% again.

      • 4
        1

Defenses are keying on him and running him off the line. Tinks being the amazing strategist that he is doesn’t have a solution for getting him open three looks, so they pass the ball around the perimeter and hope Ethan can score.

      • 2
        2

He has a nice form, but he’s a head case. I heard a rumor that he and Silva will be back. Ethan is going to Europe. I wish Tinkle would develop Tariq Silver, he looks good when he’s out there.

        61-57 loss. 36% shooting.

        • Has anyone honestly developed under Tinkle? Even guys like Eubanks and Kelly were good when they came in and didn’t ever seem to take it to another level.

          • “Even Eubanks was good when he came in…”

Eubanks was like a wildeyed racehorse with all kinds of athleticism but no game understanding. Tinkle didn’t improve his abilities at all and placated Eubanks crazy attempts at shooting jumpshots rather than posting up and learning how to be a force under the basket. Eubanks had a notion that he needed to be Nowitzki to make it in the NBA. He is in the NBA based on Spurs liking his size and athleticism more than his still raw basketball skills after 3 years with Stinkle.

Tinkle is a weak coach that has played favorites for 6 years and pushes much harder on the role players. Hence the role players transfer out because they aren’t stupid and see it happening real time.A true leader/coach sets a high bar for all and holds all up to it allows the team to push one another as a unit, not creating fragmentation within the locker room. I have no first-hand knowledge other than watching the rinse repeat cycle from afar and it is easy to spot. No chemistry/no trust/no camaraderie among the team is a clear tell. It has been the coach’s kids/the rest divided for too long.

          • 5
            1

Doesn’t it seem like Ethan is basically the same player after 4 years except he gets the ball more with Tres and Stevie now gone? Would have been nice to see him completely take over the game like McKinley did and lead the Beavs to a victory over a slightly more talented team. He seems to have a knack for scoring late trying to catch up instead of putting the opposition on its heels.

  9. I don’t know if I can be helpful but I’m ticketed for all 4 games down here. My observations.Abel looked great. My only beef is I thought Canham intended to go four innings with the starters and get the releavers some quality work. So when Abel comes out in the 5th I thought “what the hell,I didn’t care if the score was 0-0, get some other kids throwing (we have a ton of them). Sure enough, Abel goes 1-2 and boom, we go down 2 runs. Now Abel gets pulled. Glad they got a hit or Mitch would have had him go the distance. Two, our at bats were terrible. Either we suck or we were hitting against the top pitcher in the ncaa. Three, Casey is the only one who can bunt sorry Angry. Last, it’s early. Let’s see where they are once league starts. NOTE: BEAVS STAY HERE AND PLAY GRAND CANYON UNIV 3 or 4 games starting next weekend I think.http://angrybeavs.com/baseball/15937 Check schedule.

  10. Sorry I’m reporting late. New Mexico State must have used their best pitchers in game one. We hit the ball hard all game. Even had several homers resulting in pitching changes and we would continue to club the ball. Biggest takeaway was our bullpen appears to be solid. Mulholland made me smile. Tosses the ball to the plate and appears not interested in striking the batter out. More like here’s my mid 80s pitch. My fielders will get to anything you nit.. AND they did. He looks like his old self back in the saddle on the bullpen. Last, turned seasons first dp. Overall, looked fast in the outfield.

    • Thanks so much for the report. Please give us more as you are able.
From the radio, I believe Canham has coached at least part of the time from the third base box, are you seeing any indication of “fire” from him? Either at the umps or mistakes by his guys (BigJim pointed out at least one baserunning error which Canham should have seen up close and personal).

Do you have ticks for the Grand Canyon series?

  11. We appear ok on the mound today. Canham in 3rd base box all the time. No fire when errors occur. Always appears positive. Lots of fist bumps, hits or errors. Angry sure to be happy for Casey. 2 hrs in 3 games?. Seriously, Casey is swinging early in the count. Something he never did in years past. He’d was trying to earn a walk. To my eye, some coach explained to get on base, swing away! I think game one he stuck out but they all did!
Jones up leading off 2nd inning. Wow, another triple down over first base. Followed by Obers double. 5-0, nobody out. Zags changing pitchers.

    • 3
      9

I don’t want Casey to fail. But it was a legit question why he was batting 6th giving his career hitting record. If he’s on the roids and things have changed then I’ll change. We’ll see as the competition gets better.

          • How? All I said is Joe Casey is a worthy of hitting 6th in the lineup and it doesn’t matter what he was rated 5 years ago in HS. And you don’t need roids to do that. He also doesn’t look anything like someone on roids.
As far as head space, keep deleting and editing my comments. Oh but you don’t do that. ;)

    • 2
      2

Agree only to a point; not gonna face many better arms in the PAC than the K-State kid.
BTW, 6 LOB in 3 innings sounds like the old Beavs! Not complaining, but I bet Pat would be.
AND, Luck ‘o the Beavs seems positive today.

  12. 7-0 going into bottom of 4th. We are playing big time defense, throwing out batters going down to first from 10 feet onto the grass at short.
Darn, Casey laid down a bad bunt to lead off and then….strikes out on a called 3rd strike. By the way, Jones has 2 triples and a single after 3 today!
Sanchez got the DH today and is showing poorly at the plate. I see a lot of frustration on his part.

  13. Washburn hit a batter each of last two innings. DPs erased both innings. We’re up bottom of 5th stillleading 7-4.
Jones now 4-4 on the day, 2 triples and 2 singles

  14. My mistake. Bottom of 6th. Zags changing pitchers. We have two on, no outs and another bad bunt. AND AGAIN. Strike 2. Luckily mcMahan then hit a single. Armstrong up, no outs. FINALLY, he hits a double and drives in 3.

  15. WBB with a huge road win over UCLA, 71-64.
ESPN kept saying their bracketologist had the Lady Beavs as a “last four out” team for the tournament before this game, so this likely puts them in for next week’s projections.

  16. 7
    1

BWB’s with a huge win at Pauley. Scott R can still coach, apparently. T Von O looks to be quicker version of Mik Pivec. The other frosh, Goforth, is a very good athlete.. If Taya can get back to some semblance of her old self and Brown rehabs well, this will be a formidable team next year.

    • In not sure how you play 24 minutes and don’t even get a rebound. Smh. She’s never been much of an offensive player, but she’s regressed. Even putting up her freshman numbers would be a boost. Rueck sees something there I guess.

  17. 4
    2

Never over react to one game in baseball. Key stat is overall run differential. After 3 games… 36-8. Tough loss against kstate but encouraging signs after 3 games. If team can rake against bad pitching and their own pitching can keep them close against better teams, they’ll win 35-40 games and compete for P12 title. Stay healthy and stay the course.

Huge win for women’s b-ball team. This team is going to be damn good moving forward. I wouldn’t want to be top seed in ncaa and have to play Beavs. Beat ducks and 1 win in P12 tourney and they should get in.

  18. 2
    2

Too bad about those two losses to Wazzu. Both games were winnable. They would be sitting comfortably. They will have to earn it now. Need to beat the Quacks.

    • Yeah, too bad we didn’t have TVO available in at least the first game and I can’t recall if she was available for the second game. Certainly, the addition of TVO has made a huge difference allowing Aleah to spend less time handling the ball and more time shooting it. Plus, TVO replaced a lot of Jas Simmon’s minutes who just wasn’t very productive. The future certainly is bright with Greta Kampschroeder coming in next year along with two other solid recruits. This team will be loaded next year if there are no offseason defections via the xfer portal.

  19. 7
    1

Great day to be a beaver. Beavs hammer the Zags and Beavs whoop the bruins. I posted several weeks ago that when she joined the Beavs, TVO would be a great player for the beavs. It appears she’s the best freshman in the Pac 12. If the beavers can play a few more games that were canceled, I think they make the tourney. Great win today and certainly now looks like the best team in Oregon after you know who got spanked by UCLA.

    • 1
      1

…play a few more games that were canceled
Not likely. As Rueck said postgame, no one wants to make up a game vs a team that is lower in NET and he doesn’t expect anymore games other than nike prior to tourney.
Wildcats owe us a postponed game, but not likely to happen.

From here on out, if they aren’t already doing it, teams are gonna do their best to get Jones into foul trouble. I’ve seen some good stuff from Jelena but can’t count on her for extended minutes. Overall, the team has better depth than some and that’s a big factor in tourney. As has been said, Brown will be a big shot in the arm next season (hopefully).

      • I had heard last week there was a possibility of making up some games, but you’re right if they were against lower ranked teams, it wouldn’t help. I’m not sure even beating the Ducks is enough to qualify the Beavers because they just have played too few games. I guess maybe the Beavers will just need to go out and win the P12 Tourney and prove they belong. At the moment, they certainly look more the part than the Ducks do and I think OSU may very well be the Ducks too as the Ducks have lost their mojo. We shall see.

  20. OT…..but still BASEBALL:
Regarding Luke Heimlich and the Tecolates Dos Laredos…….
“The franchise has solid verbal agreements with Greg Mahle, Andre Rienzo and Jose Oyervides for them to be three of their five starting pitchers this season. The Tecolotes project hopeful-returnee Luke Heimlich as another starting arm. However, Heimlich is hesitant to come back to the Gateway City as he hasn’t pitched in over a year.
    Their season starts May 21.

    https://www.lmtonline.com/sports/article/A-look-at-the-three-starting-pitchers-the-15967063.php

    • 12
      2

It’s too bad. The “journalists and crusaders” ended up winning to some degree, they screwed Heimlich out of a career and a living with their scorched earth approach. I hope Heimlich is able to have a decent life despite missing out on life-changing financials.

  21. Looks like we got two new in-state PWO linemen. I guess it can’t hurt to get more big dudes in there and see what they can do. Part of a successful line recruiting strategy for us has to be taking above average numbers in order to get lucky with one or two underrecruited guys (in addition to emphasizing the quality guys to fill the top of the class).

    • I would like to see them do that at the defensive line position specifically DT. They’re so thin there they could probably have a pretty good chance at contributing in a couple of years.

What do you think about President Biden after 1 month in office and 40+ executive orders later?

Is he a dictator? Where is the legislative process now?

Curious about your thoughts in general after all of the vitriol directed at President Trump…

    • 1
      18

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for the political question. Just curious where the guys on the board are after a month. I’m not trying to ruin a topic or troll anyone. I’m just wondering about honest assessments of Biden.

    • 3
      3

He has a major foreign policy decision to make in the coming months.

      S. 4813 (Taiwan Relations Reinforcement Act of 2020) looks to have bipartisan support in the Senate, as it was drafted by both Merkley and Rubio. This would be a major step towards recognizing Taiwan as a sovereign state with an increase in military aid.

If Biden signs it, he’ll be a national hero who really does stand up for democracy. If not, you wonder how much influence China’s Wall Street investors have within the inner circle of current administration.

According to the American Bondholders Foundation, about 20,000 American households hold up to $2 trillion worth of bonds from the Chinese government, dating back to the Qing dynasty. Some bonds have been defaulted on three or four times.

While Americans can “vote with their dollars”, the SEC needs to step up and enforce regulations to make Chinese investors disclose their finances prior to trading on our exchanges. I believe Thatcher was the only western European leader that told the Chinese government that they could not trade on the London exchange if they didn’t pay off their loans. CCP did and it helped Britain get out of their recession.

This sums up how I think about it.

Well, the girls are frisky in old ‘Frisco
A pretty little chick wherever you go

Oh, and I walk and they walk
      I twist and they twist
And I shimmy and they shimmy
And I fly and they’ll fly
Where we’re out there having fun

    • 2
      3

I think it’s WAY too early to try to grade Biden’s work. I’ll be looking primarily at progress with the pandemic, schools, and the economy over the next several months (although I recognize there are many other issues out there also).

      • 11

New challenge: every time someone mentions politics, you have to respond in a way that brings the conversation back to OSU athletics, no matter how weak the link.

        A few examples:
“Transpacific Partnership? Tinkle does need to start importing more 7-footers from China and Australia, doesn’t he?”

“Speaking of healthcare reform, when is OSU going to drop Nike and get some better shoes that don’t cause so many foot injuries?”

“While we’re talking executive orders, do you really think JS should have gone for it on 4th down last weekend?”

    • 5
      1

The number of EOs used by Obama-Trump-Biden is insane. If it keeps up like this, the we are basically electing dictators for 4-8 year terms. Checks and Balances are badly out of balance.

  23. 9
    7

Homofries and Bendoverbeav in usual form.

Idk what’s worse. Constantly bitching for four years or continuing to bitch about the last four years.

It’s over. Let it go and start paying rent

  24. Been offline the past few days, but noticed footballscoop is saying AJ Steward is a strong candidate for the RB job now. So now Blitz has him on their list.
I seem to remember someone here on AB (AirplaneZzzipppy?) in early February saying the same thing. AB scoop?

    • Last week I mentioned the new recruiting coach (Moala’s old job) would be a current grad assistant, but wasn’t sure which one yet. Still dont know, but I think it could end up being our WR GA, Austin Brown, who also happened to start following AJ Steward on twitter. Go figure

VanAkeren and Richards were the other 2 GAs who I thought it could potentially be.

  25. Baseball: End of the 1st, 0-0.

Preston got to 2nd with 1 out, but no one was able to bring him home. The hot-hitting Casey and McMahan are due up in the bottom of the 2nd.

  26. Regarding Warrens performance, anyone else think it’s past time for Josh Worden to be given a shot?
Much like Bob Lundeberg who lost his job to Steve Gress, we are seeing the “old boys” club fail to provide the best product.
    JMHO

    • Warren is awful. Worden has a great voice and is well spoken. I’ve never heard him do play by play but can’t be worse than warren.

  27. I’m listening to the Lobo call. They get a donation to the food bank with every strikeout they get. Beavs making sure no one goes hungry. Smh

  28. Nice to see the bottom 4 in the order with 9 of the 13 Beavs hits……OTOH, not so nice to see only 4 hits for the rest of the crew. Spring training’s the time to sort out the order, we may see changes like Armstrong and McMahan moving up. What will Mitch do?

  29. 2
    4

WBB NET: Beav gals go from #40 to #34 after the sweep in LA. Nike up 1 place to #7 after their split (and shellacking by UCLA), UCLA drops 2 places to #9.
All adds up to a big opportunity this Sunday; another chance for a road win vs the #7 ranked team.

    • 1
      4

Ducks are 0-6 vs teams ranked in top 25 this season. I had no idea that was the case with all of those 5* players. I wonder if Mark Osborne still thinks the beavers WBB will never be able to land blue chip talent now that we have goforth, TVO and Greta K. incoming as well as Meagan Beers. Maybe MO should have just left OSU without throwing shade on osu’s recruiting.

      • 5
        2

I can’t remember, did Campbell have any beef with Reuck before he left? He’s always rubbed me the wrong way, apparently, he didn’t learn any humility from Scott. And how long is this dude going to remain an assistant head coach? He’s young, take an HC job somewhere, build a program if you’re personally such an amazing recruiter.

        • The way I understand it, no inside knowledge just reading what others have said, is that he left for more money and didn’t give OSU a chance to match. On his way out, he told a few recruits families that you can’t win at OSU. That didn’t sit well with the staff.

        • 1
          2

yeah, he told Katie McWilliams before leaving OSU that the reason he was leaving was because OSU would never be able to recruit blue chip players. Classy comment by Campbell to a young lady that I believe was a blue chipper and he recruited.

  30. With Rob Vanderlaan leaving OSU via transfer recently, a potential OL transfer to keep an eye on is Kaimana Wa’a. From Corvallis and went to CVHS. Signed with Hawaii in the 2018 class. Then transferred to Texas State this past December, but has recently backed out of that commitment due to some type of unspecified family emergency. Was a Rivals 2* OL out of HS.

Do any of you guys raise bees? We’re thinking about giving it a shot.
Or maybe just putting up a box/super with lemongrass in it and seeing if we get any wild hives or swarm hives.
If anyone does it, give me some details on difficulty, costs, etc.

    • Check the farm stores near you. Most of them have bees available to order and also have bee keeping classes. The online stuff is good but picking an experienced keepers brain is worth the covid hassle. I would do it at my place, but I’m too afraid my neighbors spray to many pesticides ( farmland and lawn maintenance companies). I do have 180′ of berries and a small orchard that would probably benefit, but I also haven’t seen a lack of pollination over the last 6 years. And I don’t eat honey.

        • I’m not sure, but I dont think it’s that easy. Keepers seek out wild hives. I see flyers for free bee removal in my area from time to time. That a good question to ask the pros though.

  32. Two questions I’d like to hear opinions on:
    1. Rank starters from first baseball games 1-4. Is Hjerpe the best right now? Abel being the potential Friday night starter seems like a great weapon to have. Correct me if I’m wrong but in 2018, he really didn’t come on until the end of the season, and the following season he barely pitched. We have yet to see him put together a complete year. No fault of his own, but I’m curious to see the longevity of his stuff. Is he a Jorge Reyes or a Matt Boyd (I thought Reyes had short term success).
    2. Rank qb depth chart you’d like to see for the Fall.

    • 1
      1

      1. Abel only allowed 1 hit to quality competition. I know it’s a small sample size, but if he can maintain the sub-1 WHIP, he’ll be fine. The others didn’t face fantastic competition, so it’s hard to say much. I expected Pfennings to be better.

      2.
      1. Best QB
      2. 2nd best QB
      3. 3rd best QB
      4. 4th best QB

In all seriousness, I think Gebbia was better than Nolan and deserves to be #1 unless Nolan/Gulbranson/Vidlak blows everyone away in the Spring.

What do you think, after baseball finishes on the weekend put up a general thread for the week?

Edit: Quick turnaround this week with the Monday game and then a Thursday. I’ll just put up the Grand Canyon thread early.
