  2. Doesn’t appear that Fulkerson is going to play today but we’ll see at game time.

Looking at Tennessee’s recent games, they really are good on defense. Holding most teams to under 40% even in losses. But it’s mostly from perimeter defense. So the Beavs will need to get consistent scoring in the paint, otherwise it’ll be a blowout.

      • Agree here. Andela and Alatishe will have big games but how will Barnes use tempo to combat the size. Silva with 8 and 6 would be a good contribution. He will pick up cheap fouls trying to keep up with the speed. I’m thinking a lineup with Alatishe at the 5 with ET, Hunt, Lucas, and Reichle.

        • I’d expect Tenn to blitz the Beavs at the beginning of the game. Lots of run outs and press defense to slow down beavs half court offense.

      • If Tenn is weak at defending the post, seems like the inside game and OSU foul shooting could be an advantage? Beavs getting to the line, exploiting their FT advantage, and slowing the game down, could be helpful?

I’m guessing if it is close or Beavers lead, Tenn panics or handles it poorly, and Beavs maintain cool based on recently developed success and confidence.

I don’t see this team playing with any jitters. They have been playing with house money winning the tourney. Should have all the confidence in the world

  3. Baseball allowing fans at 15 percent capacity today. That will all go to family and season ticket holders though.
Also hearing rumors (99 percent sure) spring game will be May 1 or 8. They are planning on fans. In the past only the new side was open. I am wondering though if they don’t open the whole stadium since it may be capped at 15 percent. Think that would sit everyone that wants to go based on past attendance… of course people are itching to get out and with the game in May it could be close to record attendance even capped at 15 percent.

    • Baseball season ticket holder here – they’re using the “Beaver Points” list to determine who gets tickets first, (based on contributions, years of holding tickets, etc.), after families of players. I’m not high up enough to make it yet, possibly if restrictions are lowered and they go up to 25% capacity.

  4. Nice interview with Wayne on the Payton Years. He directly addresses the fact that the team didn’t know what to make of Tres being the hardest worker on the team, but also the coach’s son. Basically, it was impossible for him to set the tone as a leader because of who he was.

  5. Read that Florida St’s coach announced today he will hold out Omar Payne, the guy who elbowed Tennessee’s Fulkerson last week. Some see it as a sign that Fulkerson is not playing, so the FSU coach thinks it only fair that his guy isnt able to play either for causing the injury.

    • I can understand why Silva thought he still had the dribble. Got the ball knocked away and never regained possession until he put the ball on the floor again. Should have been a legal dribble

  6. Scoring in the paint, getting everyone involved on offense, good rebounding, forcing bad shots by UT…

Everything is going according to plan so far. I’m surprised UT isn’t pressing harder on D.

    • I was surprised he passed on an open 3 and handed it off to Lucas for the 30 footer instead. He’s been all over the boards, though.

      • Ya he wasn’t hesitating lately and that’s been good can’t start doing it again. Alatishe could’ve taken the shot over the smaller man too.

  7. Anyone else notice Tinkles body language seems different? He used to do hands to the face and be so negatively animated. I’m sure players noticed. He is must more calm and postive.

  8. We’re really competent at basketball. This team reminds me of some of the mid-majors I’ve been jealous of in the past. Playing good defense, solid team basketball without any legit pro prospects.

  9. End of the half play shows why that guy is rated so highly for the nba draft. A great play, steal from the backside and goes coast to coast.

Can’t let those type of plays happen in the second half.

Play like it’s tied. Keep grinding.

  10. The good thing is it takes a lot of energy to pull a comeback. The Beavs used to do this all the time. They’d play like trash and then stage a comeback, only to fall short because they had jelly legs and were worn out. Tennessee is in that boat, even though we all know they have a run in them. If they do win, they’ll have to overcome fatigue in addition to the score.

  11. If they’re smart they would full court press. Beavs have had trouble with it all year and don’t have any great ball handlers.

    • That was pretty. I haven’t watched any OSU other than the Tourney, so it’s been amazing to see we have what looks like a legit offense that has a plan instead of street ball.

      • Angry, that makes total sense and I think most people in the country are in your boat. The issue has always been consistency. Except this year you could see the flashes of a good to great team. I even gave up on them as they regressed. I didn’t catch the PAC 12 tourney live. Now I am seeing the consistency, they are gonna be trouble for anyone they play.

  12. That TN run was brief. Beavs stop them, get a 3, and then TN gets a 4th foul on a key player. I’d say it’s looking good barring a meltdown. TN is going to have expend so much more energy than us to win this.

  13. In the middle of a workout. Every time I finish a set, I check in on the game and the Beavs are hitting a three. Call me superstitious — Gonna be a lot of sets, and ripped by the time this game is over.

    • For the most part they’ve been letting em play. There’s been a few calls that could have gone against the Beavs too. Andela should have a few on him for stuff under the basket.

This ain’t pac12 refs where they call everything. We’re just not used to it!

    • We were playing so well I forgot who our coach was, thanks for getting back to reality Angry… I saw 4 one possession games this year where tinkle blew it. No different here, should be slowing it down. Tenn offense has struggled, less likely they can come back with limited overall possessions

  14. Finally at the point where Tenn has two bad choices: 1) set up a shot which takes too much time off the clock, or 2) shoot quickly with less percentage chance.

  15. The announcer is right. Weird that tenn isn’t pressing full court. Once hunt gets the ball they back off. Then the Beavs slow walk it up to run clock.

      • So was I, and didn’t we get to watch some good ‘ball back then, too? These guys are good and I am so proud to be a Beav. Last weekend was good as well. Didn’t watch the Beav-UCLA game but watched the Oregon game and didn’t think that it would be much of a game after they had schooled us the prior weekend; I was happily wrong! Watching us go toe to toe with CO was even better and coming out on top; Wright III’s expresssion after the game-one they thought they should have won was priceless – they didn’t know what hit ’em. These Beaver team deserves this and all the respect they are getting, from the announcers on down. They are a good team, offensively and defensively, that has come together at the exact time they needed to. Bring on Liberty or OK State!

  16. Another great team win. If this is what the future of the program looks like, it’s bright.

Time to scout our next opponent. Go Flames.

  17. 1
    2

Truly great win for Oregon State. Really happy for the players and staff.

But anyone else get nervous when the ball was in Ethan’s hands down the stretch?

And really a terrible look by Tres Tinkle wearing a shirt with his own picture on it from his OSU days.

  18. Time to root for Liberty.
I have Oklahoma State in the finals and felt they were one of the more underrated teams (based on research…never saw them lol).

  19. Liberty looks okay early on. Oklahoma State looks a bit overly hyper and jacked up. When they all settle down we’ll see reality…but hopefully not!

  20. Not sure how to look up past comments but this team always struck me as “better” than the last few iterations of. Play D and hit open shots. It’s not a difficult game.

  21. Gotta give a shout out/tip of the cap to Roman Silva. Dude was a beast down low and had it going on.

I was annoyed they didn’t try to pound the ball more to him. He could’ve had 30. Tennessee had no answer for the big fella and no one that could defend him.

  22. The scouting report on Ok St is really easy. Cunningham is going to get his. So the key is to stuff everyone else. No need to double Cunningham. Make him play hero ball.

  23. It shouldn’t escape anyone’s attention that Tinkle outcoached Barnes in that game big time and the team executed really well.

      • When of my best friends in Minneapolis, who is a basketball nut, told me yesterday that the Beav’s would win because “Barnes always chokes in the Tournament.” Guess he was right.

  24. What if Liberty actually wins? Scouting report, anyone? Clearly they like to play a very slow, time of possession game. Shooting 50% from 3 – not sure if this is normal or not, but it’s impressive so far.

Gotta think they fall apart and get out-athleted at some point.

  25. I will be the first to admit I questioned Tinkle as a coach. But you have got to give credit to him and
his staff. This team looks like a well coached and well prepared basketball team. If you would have watched them
at the beginning of the year you would not think it was possible they would be playing in the round of 32. This is
a sign of good coaching and getting the players on the same page.

    • The question to ask is what changed? Why after 4/5 years are the players finally buying in? Was Tinkle just going through the motions since GP2 left. Or did the players just not give a shit until 2 weeks ago? It’s strange, they have done a 180° turn and its a completely different team.

      • Tinkle himself offered an explanation: he said the older guys on the team have done a good job leading by example. His theory was when Tres was a team leader, it was harder for the rest of the team to follow his lead because it was easy to assume he was only “all in” because his dad was the coach.

I’m sure there’s another side to that story, but it’s pretty clear there’s something to the AB theory that having the coaches kids was a blessing and a curse and that this program will be different with the sons gone.

        • 1
          1

Tinkle has talked about being more spiritually at peace lately, that and not having the pressure of coaching his own son may be a big part of the change; took nearly all season for those changes to translate into better team play.

          • That makes a ton of sense. Sadly I am almost buying it. You remember what they accomplished with GP II and a bunch of walk ons. I can see a team thinking Tinks is playing favorites especially when the team IMO played better without his son hogging the ball… Still doesn’t make up for Tinkles terrible game management… he’s is essentially the Riley of men’s BBall now lol

          • Oh Bill thanks for being the knower of all. You realize that they were all freshman too. Then you look at the above and realize the thread is about team cohesion. So most people would comment something in context. You are like the dude that corrects everyone on grammatical errors and doesn’t add to the discussion.

  26. Anyone know if the spread changed before the bb game? Just interested to know if the one Tennessee player being out made it move at all.

    • It didn’t move. I checked. The news only came at game time. Would’ve at least moved 2 points to the Beavs if it came earlier in the day.

  27. We aren’t going to have the advantage inside that we did against UT. Still, OkSU’s offense is kind of like UT’s in that they aren’t great 3 pt shooters, they just also happen to have one of the best players in the country. If we can play the same kind of defense we did today and hit our 3’s, we’ll be in it.

  28. t2, Abel’s first WP of the night leads to first Cougar run.
Kevin is not throwing strikes, Dorman needs to make a visit, but doesn’t

    • Was there a game today?

I think I noted Barnes is a crappy game coach. Great game, I’m superstitious, so I go into hibernation during Beavs games.

Really enjoyed the aggressive defense today. As my older brother in MSP texted me after the game…”the better team won today”. Sure is nice to hear that in reference to an Oregon State team.

    • The Beavs looked like the better team from the tip-off. I’m wondering what the SEC is really about now. The score could have been worse, Alitishe missed some wide-open looks.

  29. Through 4 full it’s looking a lot like last weekend. Cougar pitcher throwing K’s, Abel falling behind in the count and, again, WP/BB/HBP.
    Down 1-0, could be worse

  30. Man, the Beaver offense is non-competitive, are they at something like 3 runs over the past 30 plus innings now? That’s enough of a sample against P-12 pitching to say I’m concerned. This is aluminum bat college baseball for godsake. Abel getting shelled again also. 4-0 Wazzu

      • Has Canham anointed Abel as the clear Friday night guy because of his WS performance?
Is he hesitant to pull him or move him down the pecking order because of that?
Tonight isn’t the first time Abel has started slow and damaged himself with HBP/BB/WP.

          • You see it, I see it; you can bet his team mates see it.
This is a test for Canham, not sayin’ you don’t give Abel another Friday start but the leash has got to shorten.

          • 2
            1

            He’s got no run support!!!!!!!

            Let’s take a look,
vs KSU – Beavs didn’t score until the 8th and Abel was long gone.
vs Grand Canyon – Beavs scored one run while Abel was pitching. 3 more after he left.
vs BYU – No runs while he was in the game.
            vs Oregon – No runs
            vs WSU – No runs

So he needs to throw shutouts every game if he is going to win. Likely pressing now since the offense has given him ONE run during his time on the mound.

          • He has got to stop damaging himself with WP/BB/HBP. Sure, some of that is due to pressing but he can only control his own performance. Have you notice how often he is behind in the count?

          • The Abel of old though was never good for a full season. When he was on, he was on. 2018 he came on strong and then was stellar in the World Series. I hope he can figure things out. He is electric when he is on. Still coming back from injury. Different pitching against competition.

  31. The matchup vs OK st is going to be a tough one to evaluate. In one regard, they finished ranked 11/12 in the polls. On the other hand, the analytics aren’t as friendly to them. Kenpom, netrankings and espn BPI has them in the 30s. Tennessee was better in the all the analytics but was unranked. Ok St played last 8 games of the season vs tourney teams going 6-2 and beating a 1 seed in Baylor so they finished the year relatively hot.

Beavs don’t have any advantages at any position. It’s harder to see a clear winning game plan. Beavs matched up better to Tennessee’s lineup and took advantage of the injury to create mismatches.

Fun fact – Cunningham’s brother is an assistant coach, hired one year before he committed.

No hits going into the bottom of the six. The baseball team is is for opposing pitchers what the football team is for opposing rushers.

  32. USA Today on OSU, TENN:

“I’m disappointed, just sorry we didn’t give them more competition really,” said Tennessee coach Rick Barnes. “We had no inside game. They were certainly packed back in there, daring us to make threes and we had some looks and they didn’t go down. We didn’t get much on the offensive boards the way we needed to.”

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2021/03/19/march-madness-tennessee-upset-oregon-state-first-round/4773890001/

  33. Didn’t realize Sean Miller-Moore played for Grand Canyon. So both he and McLoughlin ended up on tournament teams.

Is this proof that Tinkle’s not that bad of a recruiter and player retention has been the bigger issue?

  34. Back to our friendly discussion of Kevin Abel’s performance. Here’s what the new guy at the GT writes: “Abel cruised through 4 2/3 innings and held the Cougars to just one run while striking out six…”
The writer, Canham, and others are, I believe, focused on strikeouts and the great story of Abel in the WS and his return from surgery. Very admirable accomplishments.

    But, “cruised through 4.2 innings”?
To get the 14 outs that brought us to 4.2 innings, Abel had given up 1 HBP, 3 BB, 1 WP, and 3 hits. He was behind more often than ahead of the count and would have, very likely, given up another run if not for Claunch cutting down a basestealer right before a double by Manzardo. Is that “cruising”?

After that second out in the t5, the next 5 AB’s were: a double, single, HR, walk, and a single. In only one case (the guy who walked) was Abel ever ahead in the count. Yet, he was left in.

I’d very much like to see Kevin throw a no hitter next Friday. I’d like to see his team score more than 4 or 5 runs to support him. I’d like to see Canham/Dorman help him.

I noticed in the GT article that the Cougs last night “Instead of starting ace right-hander Zane Mills, their typical Friday night starter, the Cougars instead went with junior Brandon White. “

Sometimes ya gotta make a change, maybe Mitch will consider that over the next few weeks.
    Go Beavs!

  35. Lineup posted. Jones returns to cf, Hamilton catching, Kasper/Forrester hitting 2/3, and Casey to the pine.
Only 3 starters over .300 today.

  36. Have the cougs been any good traditionally? Just heard warren say that they had the 29th recruiting class and 5th juco.

  37. Saturday’s first-round game between No.7 Oregon and No. 10 VCU has been declared a no-contest because of COVID-19 protocols within VCU’s program, the NCAA announced. Oregon automatically advances to the second round.

    Did VCU just infect everyone?

        • He’s learning. Moved from the 3b box to the dugout and now gets a better sense of the vibe. Who may be complacent, who is hungry, how is each individual reacting to how things are going, etc, etc.

I just attended a private birthday party on Youtube. They hired this famous jazz musician to perform. It was incredible. Better than a real party in a lot of ways. “You can’t stop modern science.” – George Costanza
