Finally feels like things are getting back to normal at AB with the lack of politics and lack of the turds arguing. It’s nice.

Go general. I’m sure it will focus on the game Friday. My thoughts on that, which are based on a very brief scouting of TN, is that the Beavs have to be efficient on offense, play a slow game/limit possessions, and use their rebound advantage (on paper at least). Then use the committee’s giving them a tough draw to motivate. Since I’ve never seen TN play, I have no idea if it will be enough.

Go Beavs.

  1. Baseball plays Wazzu this weekend, or is supposed to. They’ve had COVID issues that forced them to cancel their games this past weekend.

  2. Repost from prior thread.

It’s all about the matchups in the tourney. Tenn runs a four guard lineup and now they are likely to be without their starting forward. So they may go with a 5 guard lineup. Very limited experience with the remaining frontcourt players.

Advantages for the beavs will be size inside. Silva, Alitshe and Andela could have career days. But Andela and silva could be liabilities on defense if they have to chase guards around. Alabama’s big man had a great day in the sec title game.

So the game will come down to who can force the other team to play their game. Beavs need to pound the paint and crash the boards on offense. On defense, might have to go to a matchup zone and make Tenn shoot over the zone. They aren’t a great deep ball team but Tenn could run them out of the gym if they push the tempo in transition.

Likely the Beavs won’t be able to keep up their 3 point shooting so getting looks around the bucket will be key.

The odd stat would be that Tenn is on the plus side of rebounding for the year even though they play 4 guards.

Beavs win if they can use the size advantage to get Tenn into foul trouble early. Not much depth behind the first 6 guys, assuming their forward doesn’t play.

I don’t see a close game, it’s either Tennessee runs away from the Beavs or the Beavs overpower Tennessee.

    • good stuff. I like our chances if we have the size advantage. Tinks usually does a good job game planning against teams when we have that advantage.

  3. Archie Miller out at Indiana.

Indiana basketball feels like Nebraska football. They can’t admit that they aren’t relevant anymore.

    • That is still a great job. Iconic arena, hyper passionate fan base, and smack in the middle of great recruiting territory. They have made some shitty decisions hiring some slimy coaches. Miller had McKinnley Wright coming to Dayton, but didn’t think enough of him to offer him at Indiana…….whoops. Would that have changed the trajectory of his tenure? Who knows, but he cut loose a great player. IU football is on the upswing and unlike football, one player can totally change a teams fortune. With the one year waiver supposedly coming, new B-ball coaches have the opportunity to dramatically turn around programs.

Speaking of our Husker friends, they were trying to back out their opening game agains the Sooners in Norman, using the need for another home game to help mitigate the economic effects of the loss of this season. Frosty avoiding getting his ass kicked surely did not play into the equation:)

      • Firing Crean was an overreaction.

Of course this is basketball and you can turn things around quickly, but the Indiana brand isn’t what it used to be and the competition in the Big Ten keeps getting better.

If I’m FKA, I tell these fuckwits to eat the corn out of my F King turds as I walk out the door.

Ridiculous that this is even up for debate.

  4. I love the fact that OSU was picked to finish 12th in pre season conference poll and end up as a 12th seed in NCAA Tournament.. karma i guess

  5. Tinkle referred to “Sean Sheffler” (sp) a couple of times in the BE interview. I don’t see him on the staff according to the basketball staff website. He sounds important. Anyone heard of him? Is he new to the staff this year? Tinkle mentioned Sean is running the offense now and he is focused solely on defense. Tinkle also mentioned the team is finally establishing a low post presence. Said the staff has been encouraging that. Why has it taken so long? Can’t you tell the pg or whoever get the ball to the post on this set or else? I feel like Kylor, Drew, etc were never utilized in the post.

  6. Gotta love ESPN and their expert Jay Bilas… He basically gives the Oregon State (DUCKS?) zero chance… This is word for word from ESPN… We never get any real respect:

No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers vs. No. 12 Oregon State Ducks

Oregon State went on an improbable run in the Pac-12 tournament. It has a terrific guard in Ethan Thompson. But Tennessee is talented and tough at every position. Tennessee has size, depth and talent. If the Vols make shots, this team can beat anyone. Yet there have been struggles to score from time to time, and that is what can end Tennessee’s ride in Indy. Tennessee’s offense is average. But when in a flow, this group is special. Yves Pons is one of the best defenders in the country. Lefty John Fulkerson is a low-post threat. Freshman phenoms Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson are dynamic athletes and drivers who can make Tennessee truly elite. Tennessee can guard inside and out, force turnovers, force tough 2s, block shots and give you a physical beating. They wear orange, but the Vols leave you black and blue. Tennessee can get stuck on the offensive end at times but is better than the Beavers.
    Winner: Tennessee

Maybe the Beavs shouldn’t lose at home to Portland who was 327 in the net rankings if they want respect. Out of 347 teams. Or to Wyoming.

    • Seems pretty reasonable to me. Tennessee looks like a dark horse final 4 team, especially if Fulkerson is available.
Oregon State looks like a team that can gut out some wins if shots are falling, but that’s a big if against a good defensive team

      • Not saying Tennessee is not the favorite, that’s obvious… I think the fact that they call them the Oregon State Ducks and say one sentence about Ethan Thompson bothers me…. Alatishe is the most talented player OSU has had in awhile… He’s raw because he hasn’t played basketball long but has really come on when it’s mattered… He is OSU’s dark horse… when people don’t mention him it shows they really haven’t watched this team

          • Haha! Jack would eat up this cancel culture stuff these days, he was a pioneer. Maybe he moved on and is leading the cancel culture discussion elsewhere and that’s why we don’t see him here.

  7. Ethan’s always been the no. 1 option, but if anyone who tries to speak authoritatively about the Beavs, think all you have to do is shut him down and you win – really doesn’t know the team at all. The Beavs are 8-5 when Ethan scores 15 or fewer points.

    • Ethan had good moments, but I think they were successful in the tournament specifically because it wasn’t just the ET show. Everyone contributed.

Tinkle himself mentioned in the press conference that the reason they were successful was everyone left their ego at the door and stuck to the gameplan with constant ball movement rather than getting selfish (which he admitted has happened at times this year).

    • Imagine if this had been the mindset for the past few seasons. That comes from the coach but when your kid is the best player…oh well.

      • ^^^ this. And just like with parenting, sometimes when you think you’re doing what’s best for your kid by letting them do whatever, it comes back to haunt you. I won’t say Wayne wasted his sons talent but he really showcased his individual talent but didn’t help him develop has a team leader.

        • Which is too bad for trey because if he is ever going to become a NBA player he has to do the little things and knock down 3s.

  8. It’s highly likely that no one writing any of the tournament analysis you read this week has seen a Beaver game this year. Hard to blame them when they’re all on after EST bedtime on a channel no one would ordinarily pay for and the Beavs weren’t on anyone’s tournament radar until they had already qualified.

  9. Yesterday afternoon was very surreal. Wondering Friday afternoon if they could represent against UCLA to Sunday wondering what seed the Beavers would be in the big dance.

On a side note–Beavers getting early pro gambling support, driving the number down a point already.

    • Good experience. Win the first game hopefully and then get to play a team that will set the tone for next year. Seeing them get dominated by Stanford due to physicality should help them stay in the game a bit more against South Carolina.

      • I imagine it will be a full court press the whole game with lots of TO’s. The kryptonite for Scott’s teams.

    • How old is the Pac tourney? I keep saying it’s the first time the Beavs have won it. This seems unbelievable given how good we were before the early 90s.

      • It’s a little confusing because there was a tournament from 87-90. Arizona was typically better than the Beavs in the late 80’s. The tourney went away until 2002, by then the Beavs were shit. Beavs were not good after Payton’s last season (89-90).

        • Whatever, JJ got us to the NIT! David Lucas, Nick Dewitz, Sasa Cuic…

Interesting how the game has changed. As a team, the 04/05 Beavs shot 39% on 3’s, they defended the 3 as well as this year’s team and they also had David Lucas. In today’s game, that team probably would’ve won a few more games and made the tournament, but they were undersized so teams just dominated them inside.

          • One season, LOL! Still 8-10 in league play and of course they lost their first-round game. Was David Lucas a walk-on or am I thinking of someone else?

          • IIRC, he walked on because his family said they didn’t need the scholarship money and wanted the team to have that scholarship free for someone else.

          • went to HS with Lucas he was only 6-3ish in high school and super thin. When he showed up at OSU as big as he was, I was shocked.

        • Are you saying the Pac Tourney dates to ’87? That would explain it. Figures they enact it right as we were about to become awful. Luck o’ da……

  10. There’s 1.5ft of snow still on our roof. It’s super wet/heavy snow, too. Nervous about collapse. It’s times like this I wish I invested in a roof rake over bitcoin.

  11. Watch for the spread to move once the injury status of Fulkerson is known for Tennessee. It sounds like he has a facial fracture as it’s been reported he underwent a procedure. Surgery usually means he’d be out for a period of time to let the bone heal but not sure what they meant by procedure. Tenn will likely not announce his status until gameday.

    • Depending on how bad the fracture is, sometimes guys will play with a mask. The mask and knowing he’s injured will definitely have an impact on his willingness to bang inside, though.

  12. Joe lunardi picking the Beavs in first round. He’s really confident in that pick and likes the Beavs a lot. He mentions that you had to stay up late to watch them. Like I stated above most of these experts didn’t see them play. For me this has been the best team Tinkle has has top to bottom. Lots of depth and size. We look like a team that should compete with anyone… This has been the most consistent inconsistent team I’ve ever seen. Much more consistent then Tinkles teams of the past but still a Tinkle team… If we can play consistent like our run in the pac 12 tourney, we win on Friday.

    • 1
      1

I like that Tinkle seems to have a good rotation now. Even if Ethan get it’s foul trouble or Silva, there are other players who can make shots. Need Calloo, Hunt, or Andela to have a big game. Also, maybe Tennessee won’t know Lucas’ tendencies and he can get loose for a few big shots.

    • Another comparison is how the last 10 games have gone.

Tenn is 6-4 in their last 10. 2-2 vs tourney teams

Beavs are 7-3. 3-2 vs tourney teams.

I would say the 15-16 tourney squad would have made a run if Tres wasn’t hurt at the end. He didn’t play in the tourney game vs VCU.

    • Somewhat surprising considering this year and everything that’s going on. Not surprising in that he peaked back in 2015 and hasn’t made the tournament since 2016. Been average since and Utah is paying him 6.7mil to say goodbye. Will be interesting to see who they bring in as they were paying him over 4mil a year.

      • A couple of 2022 guys I’m keeping an eye on are 2 players out of Duncanville HS in Texas. Same school where Zeriah Beason attended.
        Jarelle Powers, a 6’5″ WR
        Quincy Wright, a 6’5″ DT

We’ve offered several guys at Duncanville and that school puts a ton of guys onto D1 rosters. These 2 in particular seem like OSU’s best bets from that school for the 2022 class.

        • And just since I wrote about these Duncanville guys last night, I noticed we’re showing new interest in 2022 3* ATH Pierre Gorre, also at Duncanville.
Likely being recruited as a CB. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a new offer go out to him in the near future.

Makes me wonder what Kefense Henson’s connection at Duncanville is? He seems to be the reason we’re in at that school.

      • Another legitimate shot guy is Colston Loveland, the TE out of Idaho. There was a story recently on one of the recruiting sites that said the Beavs are among his top schools. Doesn’t hurt that our OC is recruiting the Idaho region.

      • 1
        1

And now, in the last 24 hours, I see Powers has received a Florida St offer and Loveland has received an Alabama offer. So that pretty much removed Oregon State from the conversation, haha. Things change quickly, but rarely in a good direction for OSU

        • We need to learn to stop asking so everything just stays under the radar. I feel like some of our better commitments of the past few cycles have been guys that sort of came out of nowhere like Lolohea, Fuaga and White.

      • Katin Houser was my first gut bomb guy, but he received a UW right after I made that prediction. So at this point it depends on which direction UW goes. If they pick up another QB, we have a good shot with Houser. Also, House has been looking pretty good now that his HS season has started recently in California, and his team gets TV coverage so he’s pretty visible to college coaches nationally. He could pick up more offers over the next several weeks.

  13. Saw Washington picked up the transfer CB from Oklahoma who is buddies with Tyjon Lindsey. Makes me wonder, how come we never hear anything about or from Lindsey anymore?

    • Quote from Jared Lucas in the Eggers piece linked below:
“I know it’s voted on before the (Pac-12) Tournament, but Coach Tinkle should have been the Pac-12 Coach of the Year. Nothing against Coach (Andy) Enfield (of Southern Cal). He did a good job with his team. But the media made a mistake there.”

  14. Beaver politics: Oregon House Bill 2843 and House Bill 2844 would better protect beavers from being hunted and trapped for their fur and because some people consider them a nuisance. House Bill 2843 would ban hunting and trapping of beavers on federal public lands. Brad Witt is contact legislator.

  15. Plenty of reasons for a single thread, one being that this crowd (justifiably) likes to stay on the current thread no matter what.

There are aspects of the baseball team worthy of discussion and, likely, would have been brought up here if not for the poor performance last weekend. Basketball (both Mens and Womens) is just too good a story, displacing right now, evaluation of Canham and his squad.

-It isn’t easy to admit that the quacks have a very competitive team, those first two pitchers were the kind of strike throwers we used to appreciate.
-Is it too soon to say that Canham is too much of a “buddy” to his players?….I noticed Ryan Ober swat Mitch on the butt after he came out to check on him when he got bumped going into second; anyone ever see a player swat Casey? Small sample/Could be reading too much into this, but it did get me thinking.
-Didja notice that the only win last weekend happened when Mitch started coaching from the dugout, rather than 3b? Better discipline when he’s there? Wonder if it had anything to do with the warnings the ump seemed to give in the first (second?) game.
-Anyone know why Verburg seemed to have a beef with either the 3b ump or the quack coach over there?

For the first round, baseball schedule will not interfere with either Mens or Womens Basketball………..all baseball games livestramed by The School (almost certainly with Jon Warren). Start times:
    Friday: BB 5:35pm, MBB 1:30pm
    Sat: BB 1:35pm,
    Sun: BB 1:05pm, WBB 4:00pm

(As for “play by play” comments; there have been requests for p-b-p here in the past; from ab’s who couldn’t access that info in other ways. Might even happen later in the season if the teams performance generates interest.)

Could be but I also am in a group on Facebook and it was mentioned on there. The latter seems more likely but who knows?

  16. Barely a mention of Oregon State. She talks about her family – tough circumstances. She was able to get back and forth to Meridian during her redshirt year. I got the impression she didn’t feel as though she fit in at Oregon State.

    • 1
      2

According to some rumors she was dating a local girl who was also going OSU, maybe that didn’t fit. Some ‘families’ are like that.

  17. Spot on, the retailers make all the money on animal fur products. I priced a few real fur blankets last fall and depending on wich animal it came from prices were $1500 up to $10,000. For warmth and comfort nothing beats them though.

  18. Okay basketball/baseball thread has been created. I scheduled it to post Friday. It has all times and TV links in it.

Basketball is 1:30 Pacific, correct? I’ve seen two times but that seems the correct one.

  19. I don’t follow men/womens basketball terribly closely but have followed a couple threads here.

Might a bb head provide a brief description of what style each of the OSU teams tend to play? What is positive or needs work for each?

If there’s a good article you can point too, I can read that as well!

At their best, MBB plays low-tempo, lots of ball movement, often inside-out with Alatishe getting the ball up high and either attacking the hoop or kicking back outside the arc. Tinkle himself said the team has been too selfish at times and hasn’t stuck to the gameplan. They’ve been inconsistent this year, which you can see by the fact that they’re 5-5 against Quad 1, but also have two Quad 4 losses.

Strengths- they’re the best team in the PAC at defending 3’s. They don’t turn the ball over much, but they have struggled with ball security against teams that play particularly aggressive D (ASU and Nike; but we were still 3-2 against those two). The PAC just doesn’t do a whole lot of that. When they’re on, they move the ball well and spread the scoring out. Alatishe is the best rebounder in the conference and a freakish athlete.

Weaknesses- they really only have two major offensive weapons that can take over a game: Thompson and Lucas. Thompson has a more well-rounded skill set, but he’s streaky. Lucas is one of the best shooters in the conference, but he doesn’t do as much inside the arc (and he’s also a bit streaky). Rebounding effort from the whole team is inconsistent. They have a tall lineup overall, but the effort isn’t always there, and they struggled against the only team in the conference with legit bigs (Arizona).

Ultimately, mindset seems to be the big X factor for this team. When everyone’s locked in and playing their game, they can beat anyone. The struggle this year has been getting that consistently. They lost a few games by 25+, but they were also able to win the conference tournament by beating three tournament teams. Hopefully Tinkle has them properly motivated tomorrow and they don’t just rest on their laurels.

      • Re: beating teams with legit bigs, I guess they did beat USC once in a really low-scoring game entirely on the FT margin.

That’s another strength: the Beavs are a really good FT shooting team.

      • 2
        1

That is a pretty good summary. I will add:

Hunt is the only player who qualifies as a true point guard so our ball handling is pretty bad. Teams that pressure and trap can cause turnovers pretty easily when the backcourt is Thompson and Lucas. If I am Tennessee and Ethan is the one bringing the ball up court, harass the hell out of him and you’ll probably get some steals or coax a few bad passes.

For that reason, I’m not optimistic about this match-up with the Vols. Haven’t seen them play but a lot of mentions about their athletic, aggressive guards.

    • Tennessee
Strengths – get a lot of long rebounds. not a great shooting team but get a lot of second chance points with guards chasing down long bricks. good slashing team… score a lot of mid range jumpers and lay-ins. good in transition… very athletic. good at pressuring the ball and creating turn overs with guards and steals in passing lanes… leads to easy buckets. Well coached. Barnes will exploit weaknesses and make adjustments. He’ll try to push tempo early with full court pressure and traps. talent is similar to Oregon but not as good at shooting and without elite player like Duarte. overall probably more athletic than ducks but similar size.
Weaknesses – bad transition defensive team. not great at defending the post. not a good 3 point shooting team but they still jack them up. can be careless with ball and turnover prone. struggle with slower tempo and half court offense. give up a lot of open 3’s… almost like they want you to shoot them so they can push tempo and get in transition.

The key will be handling pressure/limiting turnovers, working inside out, defensive rebounding, tempo, limiting turnovers and hitting open 3s. Need to feed our posts and take advantage of size. If tennessee is hitting their outside shots, we lose. If not, got to limit them to 1 shot and slow the game down. Execute on offense by working high post and low block… then hit fair share of kick-out 3’s. I expect we’ll be ready for their pressure and pound the ball inside. Boils down to how well each team shoots.

I’m going to guess oregon state wins this game… 73-70. If tennessee wins, your looking at a score of 84-70 with lots of points in transition, second chance points, and hot outside shooting.

      • To compare 3 point shooting, here are the top 3 by attempts. I’d say it’s a push on outside shooting ability.

        Oregon State
        Lucas 39%
        Thompson 33%
        Reichle 34%

        Tennessee
        Vescovi 37%
        Bailey 35%
        Jordan-James 32%

        • agree… kind of. neither team is very good. very hot and cold. both shoot about 20 threes per game. Tennessee shoots 33.7%… 175th in nation. Beavs 35.3%… 101st in nation. But if you look at last 6 games since going 0-10 on 3’s against Cal, Beavs are 48-118 for 41% which would lead the nation over the course of an entire season. If we can stay in that 40% range and keep tennessee to their season average, I think Beavs win.

  20. Under 132 is getting a lot of national press from the gambling gurus and pros. OSU is something like 315th in the country in “tempo”. Tenn is in the 240’s

As far as spread, recommendations are about 3 to 1 in favor of Beavs covering the spread of 7.5-8

Read that Barnes is a crappy game coach.

    Please wager responsibly.

  21. Not much belief in the Beavs in Vegas. Line has increased to 8.5.

Beavs are also the least chosen 12 seed in brackets. Deservedly so but also a great pick to wreck majority of brackets.

    • Looks like there are about 6 brackets out of 38 that are still listed as incomplete. Just a final heads up to make sure you’ve completed yours, added a tie breaker AND saved.

  22. 1
    1

Prediction for the game tomorrow: Lucas get called for intentionally kicking his feet at the defender while shooting a 3. Fact: Lucas’ normal shooting motion has his feet kicking out in front of him.

  23. Here’s your Beavs on national tv bingo card for today’s game (arrange how you like):
    -Last place preseason prediction
    -12 as lucky number
-Tinkle tallest coach in the country
-Something along the lines of “it’s amazing what Tinkle has done in a place where it’s so hard to win”
    -Comparison to WSU
    -Mike Riley mentioned
    -Gary Payton mentioned
    -Craig Robinson mentioned
    -Ralph Miller mentioned
-“Aint no mountain high enough” mentioned
    -NCAA tournament win drought mentioned
-Dumb joke about how much orange there is
-Comments about gap in talent between UT and OSU
    -Comments about JC players

  24. Do any of you guys have experience with Sense Of Motion sneakers/shoes? Trying to figure if they’re worth the premium and will last. Want to buy USA products…

      • Thanks.

I’m looking more for a sneaker style. It’s been very difficult to find anything. I’m not sure it’s worth spending $170 on a shoe when I can get one for $60. Like will the USA one last 2x or 3x as long? Probably not. But I can’t bear to support China and these sneaker companies using cheap, child labor. So is that worth the extra $100? Ugh. Moral decision there.

        • I look at it as an investment in my kids’ future. Shoes last so long anyway, that paying extra for a something like that doesn’t make a big impact if you think of it as a cost per day. Things like food or other items you consume more frequently are where the extra costs have a bigger impact.

But i agree, making the decision to buy USA more frequently isn’t easy and takes some determination just to hunt down the right products.

Speaking of, I paid $40-$50 for a set of steel Made in USA dog bowls for our family camping gear a few weeks back because i couldnt ever find the USA made human bowls. But they’re awesome and will last forever. Just gotta ignore the dog logo on the bottom, haha.
