Special Sunday for Oregon State

329

Grind your coffee beans, check your stock of IPA, maybe prep some jalepeno hot poppers, and don’t linger after early church service. It’s gonna be a full day for Beaver fans.

Forget the F.King cares of the world and lets see a few questions settled. Will the bats stay hot?  Will the youngsters Rueck has assembled keep their dream alive?  Will Tinkle’s crew continue to play as a team?

Is going 3-0 today (A)likely, (B)entirely possible, (C)a long shot, or(D)??

Share your thoughts on the key factors needed for a Beavs Sweep today.  Hint: score 5 runs, keep Taylor Jones out of foul trouble, and be unselfish/take what the D gives.

Here are your start times (Pacific) and links for video coverage of all three contests. You should be able to view live stats here

    • Great last ten days to be a rodent..
Cinderella run in the PAC to the title
      WBB continues NCAA streak
Win an NCAA game for the first time in forever
      Gophers finally fire Pitino Jr.
      Beat Badgers for hockey title
Heavyweight completes undefeated season with NCAA title.

      Let’s keep this going!
WBB: Need to handle the pressure. Last time we played them it was a disaster. Attack the basket when you break the press. Goodman has to be smart with the ball and not dribble into trouble.
MBB: Do what they have been doing. They are on a roll. Hope the magic continues.
Baseball: ???? D is very good. Pitching is good. Hitting?? I am not convinced they have the raw talent of the past decade and the certainty do not have bell cow superstar to carry the team for a while. Good to see the bats come to life yesterday, but need to see that consistently.

Does anyone know if Casey does anything with the team?

  1. I would think this is the only time in Beaver’s “major” sports history that MBB, WBB could get tourney wins on the same day plus baseball getting a win. 3-0 the hard way!

  2. Today, history is not on the Beavs side. 12 seeds have made the Sweet 16 beating the 5 and 4 seeds only a handful a times but it’s a different year. Teams aren’t over whelmed by the crowds and the spectacle of playing under the bright lights.

I’ve gone back and forth as to how the Beavs can deal with Ok St. One on hand, they could try to shut down Cunningham and make the rest of the team beat them. Or they could make him play hero ball and force him into taking tough shots.

But in the end, I think the Beavs should just play the brand of basketball that got them here. Close down driving lanes and force the other team to beat them with 3 pointers. This either ends up with a close win or a blowout like the Oregon game where they hit 15 threes. Just don’t let Cunningham be the one shooting threes as he is a 40% shooter.

On the offensive end, Silva won’t be perfect like last game but Alitishe won’t go 2-10 either. Hopefully they meet in the middle. The bench will be the key here. Calloo and Hunt need to have a game. Maybe Calloo can put up a good game vs his former team.

Game is at Hinkle where Hoosiers was filmed. That should be fun. The Tinkle at Hinkle.

  3. House money-and hopefully we’ll value that for what it is. Obviously my hope is that we keep the run going.

Previewing my gambling resources today, more than one has OSU picked (Sorry, couldn’t resist). Beavers plus 6 is a trendy play. My Beaver realism is that a regression to mean is coming and Cade is going to go off today after a subpar Friday.

I’d like to be proven wrong–Go Beavs!

  4. Cowboys are good. Cunningham is elite and can single handily make the difference. Alatishe will likely match up with him and needs to stay out of foul trouble. Play solid team defense, control tempo, hit >35% of our 3s and limit Cunningham and Beavs win. 72-65.

    • I’m expecting Okie St to come out with full court press and traps in half court. Need to handle the pressure and make them pay. First 10 minutes is the key to this game. If we can attack and get easy buckets they’ll start to rush and force. If not, the Beavs could get run out of gym. Let’s hope coach tinks has them prepared… they have to be expecting it.

      • I think the Beavs can return that favor too with half court pressure. Make ok state walk the ball up and then defend the short clock. Maybe show the 131 and then settle into matchup zone.

  5. Loyola put on an absolute defensive clinic against the Illini.

If the Beavs can replicate that kind of defensive effort tonight, they’ll win.

  6. Lineup now posted for the rubber match.
Dukart remains at cleanup, Casey returns to the lineup.
Forrester and Kasper play again today along with Hamilton for a second day.

    • I started watching in the 4th with Watkins pitching. Forester blew the double play and then the bases were loaded with no outs. Idk if I would’ve pulled Watkins there. That error is why they are now losing. Burns struggling now and throws a wild pick off move.

  7. They have open looks on every possession that they don’t turnover. It’s going to boil down to simply making shots or not.

  8. Someone here was down on Taya a little while back, she’s come on since then.
And, how about Aleah taking advantage of the FSU lack of attention to her, hard to believe that will continue.

Live stats not working without credentials, I think Jones is without a foul…a good sign if true.

  9. 41-27 good gals at the half. FSU’s defense has been so porous, they don’t really need threes at this point. Just don’t let down, minimize turnovers, go for the kill in Q3.

  10. Our gal Lindsay will be on with Ron Callan at the half……….cue the pastry jokes
Lots of open shots for the Beavs in the first half, gotta believe largely due to coaching.

    • What does Rueck need to say and do at halftime? Does the lead feel “safe?” Is FSU flat (I gather their coach is not) or have they underestimated the Beavers?

      • 1) Ignore the scoreboard
        2) Expect a run by FSU, limit it to less than 8
        3) Play our game, set up half court, no quick shots unless an absolute lock
        4) Have fun

    • What’s the Schnell connection these days? I thought she got some stellar national gig? She’s a few years removed now, does that still make her a Beav expert? Her thoughts weren’t that astute when she was here.

      • She writes for, I believe, USA Today, I guess you’d say “general news”, certainly not a lot of sports.
Callan likes to interview her and plays up her longtime connection to the Beavs and Scott.
I didn’t hear anything significant from her today.

    • She only has one foul, but he wants to keep fouls a non-factor, she’s RB solid today.
Aleah also on the bench. Scott has Taya out there as the only senior to guide the talented youngsters.
I am looking for Noelle to get some time,……in a while.

      • I thought he might have pulled her because she missed an easy layup and got rejected twice inside. She returns and makes two sweet moves and scores. I’d like to think that is the genius of Rueck!

        • You could be right, I’d like to hear what Bill says about that.
One thing sure, Scott got rest for Jones (she sat for 13 mins) and showed, again, that he trusts Jelena M.; Mack and Taya seem to me to also be an asset inside to help make up for Jones being out.

          • I’d kind of like to hear from “Beavblows” or whatever name he goes by. Didn’t he say Rueck’s run was over with the program when they were 3-5?

  11. Lady Beavs just running the same play over and over again. Fsu just can’t stop it.

High pick and roll. Goodman drives, if the opp center helps, pass to Jones otherwise continue drive to basket. If guard cuts off Goodman, she kicks it out for three. If three isn’t open, dump it back into Jones who has established a deep post from the pick and roll.

    • Wow. Impressive point differential. As others said a few eeejs ago, this team is peaking at the right time, FR TVO a nice addition!

Opponents are going to take them seriously from here on out.

  12. #1 and #3 seeds out of MBB’s side of the bracket and #2 just narrowly escaped. If we can pull off another upset, the path would appear to be widening a bit..

  13. It’s interesting seeing the divergence between the pro and college game. A lot of these guys who are top pro prospects don’t necessarily have games that translate well in college (e.g. the Tennessee guards).

  14. I like the Beavs early energy. Cowboys only basket on an unintentional bank shot. Beavs need to make their open looks though.

  15. Cunningham pulled the same trick that Thompson does to draw fouls. Hunt should run the point for the rest of the game. His quickness can break the press better

    • Needs to keep his emotions in check, celebrate when you’ve done something like win the game. Interesting that Tinks went with Tucker instead of Andela, seems to be working. Tucker has a basket and a blocked shot.

  16. Tucker in for offense.

Andela better rebounder and defender but offensive game is really just putbacks. Tucker can play with his back to the basket.

  17. Calloo is insane. Notice he’s also playing hard on defense too. Altishe can get a shot against anyone, just needs some touch.

  18. Franklin with an incredible play on D to make up for a bad possession.

Tinkle is winning some serious player points with these deep rotations.

  19. Cunningham starting to play hero ball a little bit. That’s fine. They make a tough three, fine. They won’t make a high percentage of those. Keep them shooting tough shots.

But Hunt needs to be taking the ball up.

  20. Good first half. Need to keep up the defense in the second half.

Key to second half is to break the press and make them pay.

It does look like ok st players defer quite a bit to cunningham. They look like they don’t want to try to make a play themselves.

    • 1
      1

The crazy thing is we aren’t playing our game at all on offense. We’re playing their game and somehow beating them at it.

  21. Other adjustments, Lucas has to get a little more control of himself.

Alitishe, don’t lose faith. Keep attacking, they’ll start dropping.

Calloo, don’t heat check with low percentage plays. Keep working for good shots.

    • I would add that Hunt needs to play under control if he goes back in. Man, if Altishe’s shot was falling they could be up 20. I also wonder if Andela is injured, I would think he would be good for some interior defense and give a couple of fouls if needed. I guess Tucker has served that role well so far.

      • You’re never going to get all five guys playing their best on a given night…

On good teams, other guys step up. We’re finally seeing Beavs do it.

  22. One thing to note, in all of these wins, they’ve shot the ball better in addition to playing better defense. When they were losing, it was crazy how many open looks they would miss.

  23. I will say alitishe is doing good on defense vs cunningham. Has the length to make cunningham shoot over him. Also had that nice straight up block. Cunningham is going to think again when alitishe is on him.

  24. Geez, Thompson was fouled at least twice on that tough drive. Thank God, he made the shot. Alitishe with four fouls, they need him for rebounding soon.

  25. Game is about slow down considerably with both teams in the double bonus. If the Beavs can get a fifth on Anderson, all they have left is cunningham.

  26. Thompson has been clutch in a lot of different ways at the end of this game. He’s not perfect, but he’s coming up big when we need him.

  27. If this really happens I suggest we all go buy a Powerball ticket tomorrow. Beavergopher Stadium has a nice ring to it.

    • Yeah about that…so you can just ignore a ‘post season ban’ and show up and play anyway? What if weeks later the NCAA appeal fails and they ‘enforce’ the ban, would all of their games from the tournament be foreited? Had OK State won tonight and the scenario happened, I would have been pissed. I’m glad I don’t have to waste time worrying about a ‘what if’…

    • Not a chance. Still here. Still alive. Still happily married.

Was a busy day yesterday. Still found time to enjoy the game whilst working on shit around the house beforeand after.

      Go Beavs!!! Sweet 16 baby!!!

  28. 11

Sweet 16 Mother Fuckers. 3 for 3 on the day. Oh and we’re the #1 OSU in basketball bitches.

It’s good day to be a BeaverI

    • You getting all of this?

Aroma: n intense medley of cherry preserves, drippy caramel, dark chocolate, thickened maple syrup and seasoned oak spiciness.
Taste: Dark caramel coats layers of malt nuttiness and sweet graham cracker all warmed by green peppercorn and coriander spice brightened with a hint of cedar.
Finish: Tart apple crispness gives way to a long smoky finish full of toasted marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker sweetness.

I wouldn’t mind some Aberlour single malt right now…

  29. Damn, the Beavs had a 56-36 edge on the glass AND blocked 11 shots. Held Okst to 27.7% shooting. Needed it with the 17 turnovers.

  30. Usually games at the end are microcosms of the season and for the Beavs it proved true again but for the positive.

Defense led the way. Held Ok St to 28% shooting. That’s elite. Dominated the boards 55-33 but 20 turnovers negated that advantage.

Didn’t really notice it during the game but if you look at the box score, 3 Ok st players took 43 of the 63 shots and 28 of the 28 free throws. If they aren’t on, it’s not going to go well.

    • What’s interesting is ok state was coming back and then went back to their first half strategy of shooting deep shots. Im glad they did but it was either a foul
Called or they scored there for a bit. Everyone they scored they set up the press and we all saw how that went. Glad they stopped getting it to Ethan in the corner.

  31. Hard to believe the Beavs completely dominated two “elite” teams in the first half and forced them to play from behind and then thwarted their second half rallies winning each game by double digits. This is heady stuff!

  32. More on L-C:

“It’s not just a 48-hour scout, we’ve been working our whole season on defense,” Krutwig said. “I guess people kind of forgot or something, but we were the No. 1 defense in the country this year. I guess people chalk it up to maybe being a mid-major or something, but we play hard, play the right way, and we follow the scout and follow the scheme.”

  33. Loyola has some pretty impressive stats. Shoot over 50% as a team from the field and have the lowest points per game allowed on defense in the nation. How do you lose any games with these stats?

They are one of the slowest teams in terms of tempo. 342 of 357 teams. Similarly UCLA is about the same and the Beavs aren’t much better at 304.

So it could be a 50-48 type game. Early preview looks like it’ll be the battle of the big men. Silva vs their center.

  34. Anyone else notice that at least one of the referees in the men’s game was from the PAC-12? Could that be part of the crappy job done by those guys?

  35. That was an ugly game. Seemed like for the first 12-15 minutes it was fine. After that the refs became unbearable.

But a W is a W. Hats off to Tinkle and the team though for gutting out that win. Twice it looked like Oklahoma St was gonna take the lead but they never caved.

    To the sweet 16!

Not saying they’ll beat UIC but with all the upsets, I dont see anyone left in their regional they can’t beat. This could be a special, deep tournament run.

  36. There are only 4 teams left in the tournament with better defensive efficiency than the Beavs in their last 3 games: Abilene Christian (no disrespect, but this is skewed by their conference tournament), Gonzaga, Baylor, and Houston.

So, in a region loaded with good defenses, we’re the second hottest and the hottest (Houston) has their key player playing injured.

Let’s talk about Cade Cunningham. The guy’s obviously an incredible shooter and has great size for a guard. I keep reading how he’s the favorite for NBA ROY next year, but he seems to have real holes in his game. Maybe the pressure of the tournament skewed things, but you expect a dominant #1 overall pick to be able to rise to the occasion. It’s not like he put up bad numbers, but he disappeared with the game on the line against us and he disappeared in the first half against Liberty. I was just as concerned about Avery Anderson as I was Cunningham.

Cunningham doesn’t play defense with much energy, he has good, but not great athleticism, and he doesn’t seem eager to dribble at people. He’s lights out when he can catch and shoot, but he doesn’t seem to be able to create his own shot very well.

I don’t really watch the NBA, but is this guy’s hype based on his tool set or is the pro game really THAT different? Isn’t the league supposed to be all about 3 and D? He has the 3 down, but the D seems a little suspect.

    • Yeah, only saw him two games, but I wasn’t impressed. He’s very fluid, so he looks the part. Mental makeup and results weren’t good, though.

    • The pro game is that different. Much more wide open. On a team like Golden State, he’d average 20 easily. Is he a can’t miss superstar? No but at minimum he’ll be a solid pro for a long time with potential to be a perennial all star.

And they don’t play d in the nba anymore. Not important skill anymore.

Same for the Tennessee guards, their skill set is suited for the nba with the offenses much more wide open.

The main thing I saw with his was him playing hero ball late. His team was over reliant on him. Whether he asked to be the hero or not, the team saw him that way and that costs teams if that player isn’t on.

        • Not sure why people don’t think there’s defense in the NBA. Teams don’t advance past the conference semis unless they can play great perimeter defense.

It’s why the Rockets could never beat Golden State.

          • Yeah. In fact I’d wager D is as important now as anytime in league history. It is just the game has become outside in whereas a decade ago it was an inside out league. You have to defend the perimeter in the NBA.

  38. 3
    1

He didn’t appear to be a ‘floor commander’ like Zion. Another year would probably do Cade some good. He was hyped pretty good prior to this game and I expected a lot more from him. I could sense that OK State was getting frustrated when the Beavs wouldn’t bend and kept on coming at them. I didn’t watch much PAC 12 BB this season other than the tournament, but the conference is pretty well represented here. I think the conference is tougher than many have been giving it credit for.

    • I was more wondering if NBA scouts wouldn’t look at those performances at a higher level under pressure and reconsider him as the surefire #1. Mobley has had a more impactful tournament.

  39. As you’re looking at the teams remaining in our side of the bracket, you can fondly reflect on the fact that we already beat Houston on the recruiting trail for our PG of the future, Cruz Davis (C/O ’22).
