I can’t remember the last time I saw a Beaver team ready to play and execute in the first game of the season. Watching these other games, there is a lot of rust to shake off. I’m hoping for a pleasant surprise today.
Pound the rock, take care of the football, use play action, control yhe clock, and have solid special teams play and they win. Double karlaftis and don’t let him get any big momentum plays.
Crappy but at least they’re delaying the game. Was maddening how many times last year the game started before the broadcast kicked in, as we watched the end of some blowout that no one cared about.
Why the heck don’t they go double screen in those situations??
Noyer looking really shaky .. and that was an absolutely terrible series of play calls by Lindgren / JS… Would love to see what Fenwick has because Baylor and Lowe have seemed a little tentative and missed a few lanes
Only realized football season was starting a few days ago. Decided to get a Hulu live TV sub this morning because eh, why not, watch football a few months…
Took one quarter for me to remember why I stopped getting emotionally invested in this stuff.
I have to ask if I am since I’m still watching, but I can’t ignore the “I had a beer and I’m too lazy to get up” and “already watched a half, might as well finish it off sunk-cost” effects
Yeah, I’m not expecting a QB change. But if they don’t change something to block Karleftis, JS will be forced to change QB because Noyer will be in the hospital.
An unimpressive first half, let’s see if Smith has any adjustments in mind. Did they scout Karlaftis at all? Shades of Okafor and the Alamo Bowl. Can’t shake the “Riley Gene” completely out of the program.
Offensive line/Musgrave struggling. Need to run the ball straight up the gut and double karlaftis. Noyer is sucking but also needs more time and hasn’t had run game help. Have we seen Fenwick?
Anyone else feel like there has been a few missed holding calls?
This will be win in the trenches in the second half. Oline needs to assert itself and let the run game go. D line needs to get more pressure. Purdue’s misses have been when pressure had come or the qb dumps it off for short gain.
I’m not sure it’s wise to put Nolan (definitely not Vidlak) in there with the lack of pass protection unless Nolan is going to do a bunch if read option? I can’t see Nolan throwing accurately in this context?
O is asking D to do too much, will catch up w/them.
Sad how the unbridled enthusiasm wears off so quickly. Glad we’re giving up the 3rd and long again. Called for Tibs to go 2 years ago and still calling for it. Tackling is still bad.
Could have done back to back Colleto dives and been fine, but Lindgren screwed that 3rd down pass play call when we only needed 2 to keep the drive alive.
Not really impressed with Jonathan Smith win % at OSU. Is pretty low, just like expectations by the fanbase. Not running Colletto on 3rd and 2 was a mistake. In general Smith and Lindgen usually have a few bad calls a game at inopportune times. Very often they contribute to us losing much more than we are winning. Time to figure things out
Same story. Can’t get a game where all three phases of the team play well. Defense grinding. Shit or get off the pot with Noyer. Won’t happen though. Smith will play him until gebbia is healthy.
This is not on the defense. They are much better. But this offense has been terrible against a below average Purdue defense. Letting a winnable game get away from them. Uggh.
if you think about it, a succession of three OSU coaching staffs, hasn’t made the right call on starting QB since half way into the 2012 season, when Riley brought Mannion back too early to replace Vaz.
Team Nolan here. Much better positivity in his approach and mentality on the field. Understands it takes plays to win games and goes out with rmeaningful intent to execute those plays.
Any others? Musgrave has looked bad blocking. Maybe Overman should get those reps. I’m not convinced Fendwick shouldn’t be getting way more carries, either.
I think we have the right personnel, besides Champ. Maybe play Harrison and Tongue more because they are more physical. Getting the ball to those guys in space is going to be key for success in this offense, even if it is a 4 yard gain.
I won’t be too hard on Noyer. I think he would have had a good game if Lindgren called plays that got him into a rhythm. Not this “throw a deep fade to 5’5 Champ Flemings” strategy
Noyer seemed to throw off his back foot a lot and never seemed in rhythm other than a few throws. Nolan looked in rhythm on every pass, and you have to assume he knows the playbook a lot better. Makes me wonder what Smith was thinking because this had to have been happening in practice.
Good on the coach’s for running it. I like Nolan rolling away from that Kalafatis kid and either hitting an open receiver or picking it up with his feet
Smith definitely lost his mind gambling on that. WHy not punt and oin them deep, or try Colletto to keep the drive going. Easy in hindsight I guess, but man that is a bad way to begin the year.
Whhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy fucking a man Jesus Christ there was absolutely no reason to go for it on our side of the 50. Plenty of time left on the clock now we just handed the game to them.
My take on Smith as a head coach. He is an ex qb who wants the attention on him. He is not happy with a grind it out win. He wants
to make calls that are off the wall to put the spot light on him. Problem is they aren’t working and it is costing the beavs games. This
loss is squarely on smith. This was a winnable game that he stopped us from winning. I feel bad for the players.
Same old OSU…I revoke all optimism and all outrageous predictions. The coaching has some real problems that won’t likely be overcome. Another year and another disappointment..
Agree. Been making this call since year 2. Same issues as every season. Bad tackling. 3rd and long doesn’t mean anything, in fact, might be easier for teams than 3rd or 4th and short. Except now these players are mostly his “guys” and yet same issues persist.
I think Smith simply has an impatient and reckless personality. Listen to him talk. It’s fast, jittery, etc…has no patience even when speaking. He’s hardwired this way. It’s going to be the death of him as a coach.
Nolan start would have given us more than a Chance to win. Looked like a different team when he was in. I thought the defense did their job tonight. Offense lost the game. Too bad… this could have been a win with Nolan through out the game.
The pandemic solidified the lesson that winners win and losers lose. These programs are both losers, so it was close, but Purdue isn’t quite as bad a loser and they prevailed.
I dunno, what’s there really to say about the team at this point *shrug*
No. There is a reason he left Colorado. He wasn’t going to start. Not sure why the excitement when he transferred here. If he is our best option we are screwed. Didn’t have good numbers at Colorado. Usually qbs do better here with smiths offense.
That was my thought at first then Daschel and the coaching staff started pumping him up. Shame on me for not knowing better. He’s thrown for just 1200 yards total in his career. He was only a starter last year. Colorado tried to turn him into a safety. He played last year due to injuries. Reality reared its ugly head tonight.
With the receivers we have, why not get them ball in space. Beason showed what he can do when it happens. Too many timing routes that were not even close. I will accept this terrible loss only if we don’t do it against a pac12 team. Same crap though.
It seems like there has to be a quick check down or a QB option to run if the receiver does not break completely free. It did not fool Purdue’s coverage assignment. There wasn’t even separation on the route.
Why does OSU schedule tougher teams to open the season. The 3 out of conference teams should have been reversed in order. Could have figured out the QB situation and won at the same time.
Once Nolan ran a couple of plays, it became apparent to me how lost Noyer was when he was out there. I mean WTF, this is a sixth-year senior and he played like he didn’t know the offense. One of the most productive plays when he was on the field was a trick play where Lindsay threw the ball.
Game 1 knee jerk reactions:
1) tackling still not good. Defense at times looked better but gave up 400 plus yards and 3rd and long still an issue. Also, didn’t game plan to cover the TE at all. Tibs needs to go. Same story, new year.
2) No offensive identity. Must not be to confident in the run game as it was non-existent even when your QB is throwing the ball 15 yards beyond anyone.
3) I said it was Gebbia’s job to lose and it should be between him and Nolan when he gets healthy.
4) questionable calls again. While talent (at least from a star ranking aspect) is getting better, still make the same dumb river boat gambler calls and putting team in bad position.
5) losing to one of the worst teams in big 10 doesn’t give me much confidence for the conference games.
1 game doesn’t define the season so maybe my fears are unfounded but it seems like we have the same issues now as we did in year 1 under Smith but now most the players are from the new coaching group. So was it really the wrong players or is it ineffective coaching?
I agree. I like Smith a lot. But it’s starting to fall on him now. His qb decisions, his 4th down gambles. He is starting to put himself on the hot seat in my eyes. Not ready to say he’s bad or we should fire him, but it’s warming now
Most definitely agree. I think Smith has it in him. Just needs to not put the team behind on overly risky gambles. And tonight it was obvious, he (or lindgren) chose the wrong qb.
I don’t put a lot of stock in game one. A lot of good teams came out rusty today. Another week of Nolan working with the 1s should loosen things up a bit. We’ll see what they can do against Hawaii.
I mean, when was the last time the Beavers played a good game one?
Although, the next defense will game plan for Nolan. He won’t have the same advantage coming in with 17 minutes left in the game. He didn’t squint tonight!!!
Way wild theory on why Noyer was given the start:
What if promises were made when he transferred in to the Beavs?
If so, has he been given enough of a shot to have fulfilled any agreement?
BIG JIM thinks it’s still a competition; expects no announced change.
Been a causal reader of this site for a couple of years, finally joining because I have many thoughts to unload from this one.
1. Let’s start with the simplest of the issues. What happened during fall camp? What did the coaching staff see that made them think Noyer was the guy? It made sense to me when the decision was announced. I thought, okay, senior with PAC-12 experience. Gebbia should most likely be the starter, but if his health is a factor, going with Noyer made sense to me. So what did the coaches see during the camp? The inability to select the correct quarterback is frightening. Shatters the trust factor between fans and coach. How can we trust their judgment? And more on that later with the playcalling). Nolan looked way more comfortable, used his legs when he was in trouble. Some throws were a bit high off not totally accurate but he made the plays he needed to. Makes you wonder what happens if he starts the game. Again, see coaching and judgment.
2. Offensive gameplan. Noyer gets a chunk of the blame, but what’s our identity on offense? It was obvious the last few years what it was. Lean heavily on Jermar and AP on early downs, open up the short passing game from there. 38 passing attempts compared to 25 rushing attempts. We tried multiple play action looks early in the game but it didn’t make sense considering we didn’t have anything going on the ground. 3rd down throwing short of the sticks continues to poison this offense. Offensive line just overall had a terrible game.
3. Defense. The one bright spot. Yet, still frustrating. They get a little bit of a pass because they kept getting put in extremely difficult positions by their head coach. Tackling is still an issue. Multiple chances at TFLs and we’re diving at ankles or reaching out arms. Not much you can do when your offense is struggling, but forcing a turnover could have been a big boost for their offense. Pass pressure was good early but disappeared. It’s frightening how many 3rd and longs we continue to give up. Especially when a pass is thrown underneath and RAC yards get them the 1st.
4. Decision making/gambles. Here’s the thing about a gamble: When it works, it’s a genius and memorable play. When it doesn’t, it’s a bad decision or reckless. One of my favorite gambles and trick plays of all time was @ Utah in 2013 when Riley dialed up a flea flicker on 4th and inches on our own 45 with a 3 point lead in the 4th quarter. But the reason I love that play and it’s so memorable was because it worked. There’s a time and place for gambles and trick plays. That play was also a pass from Mannion to Cooks, two all time Beaver greats. Not from Chance Nolan to Tyjon Lindsey. The decision to go for it on that 4th time considering the time and situation was a gamble. The play call was reckless. I would rather be aggressive than conservative, but not at the expense of the game. We are not talented enough to try and out smart simple football IQ. Running the lowest success rate play on 4th and 1 is unacceptable and irresponsible. Run it up the middle. If they stop you, whatever. You did the right thing. Or just punt the ball. Your defense is playing great and a Purdue touchdown basically puts the game away, trust the side of the ball that’s been playing the best and punt the ball away.
I like Smith, I appreciate his effort to try and get this program turned around. But this is another blown game as a direct result of coaching malpractice. Could say a lot more but this team doesn’t deserve any more of my time lamenting over their failures. So hard to continue to support this program. So many sports at Oregon State have seen success in recency history. Why can’t we get it done in football? With every season and every brutal loss, running Mike Riley out of town continues to look worse and worse.
This team will finish 5-7 at the best. More likely 3-9. Will be interested to see what will happen to this staff if that happens.
He was getting major heat from the fan base and internally (deservedly so), which is the only reason why he entertained Nebraska’s overtures in the first place. I think him getting “run out of town” is not that offbase. I think it was very close to the “mutual decision” stage of him stepping down at OSU (i.e. I think OSU would have afforded him the respect of not outright firing him).
The rumor was that BDC asked for some staff changes and Smilin’ Mike took offense. The irony ended up being that he fired Banker at Nebraska. I guess if enough money is involved people will do anything!
Mike wasn’t run out of town. He bolted at the first sign of pressure from within the athletic department. The Texas bowl loss was the catalyst.
Good post otherwise.
Yeah, like I replied to someone else I would retract that statement now. Just caught up in the emotions. He gave us some great years but it was time for him to go.
You had me until the Riley thing. You can’t possibly think Riley would be winning us more games at this point in his career. We may not be any better as far as wins, but we surely aren’t worse.
Agree with most of your post. Not sure if defense is a bright spot though. Looks better than 5 years ago but still bad and imo will still be one of the bottom 2 defenses in the PAC again. I’m a broken record but Tibs and his schemes aren’t working.
It’s totally plausible to be better than those years of being the worst defense in the country and still be one of the worst defenses in the PAC. That’s a moral victory though and we’re past the moral victory stage this far into the new regime and we shouldn’t be content with “we’re last in the PAC but at least not the worst in the country anymore”. Tibs got out coached and made zero adjustments to cover the TE (who was limping yet still was all by himself on their last TD) in the 2nd half. He’s better suited to be a position coach than the d coordinator.
It’s a bright spot that they kept us in the game. Like I said, certain areas need a lot of improvement but the run defense especially was noticeable better than we’ve seen in the past.
Yep anyone complaining pac12 doesn’t get into the playoffs, is absolutely dillusional. UCLA looked good, but this isn’t LSU 2 years ago. LSU is likely not a bowl team this year.
Tonight should be a look in the mirror kind of self evaluation for JS regarding his coaching perspectives and gambling problems. I think he may be chasing that CHris Petersen reputation from their time in BOise St, trick plays always seemed to work, timing of those calls always had a deflating effect on opponents, Petersen recieved all kinds of accolades and became a national face for that program for a decade. In some way, I wonder if this is JS’s hope to duplicate for OSU and his own sake.
After the weekend results:
UW is in trouble and exposed
Stanford is limited and no qb
Cal is still Cal
Oregon is all hype and can be beaten
WSU yet to be seen, but unlikely to rise to prominence this year
OSU falls flat on the opener but may still have a shot at the North if JS can cease from his 4th quarter madness
UCLA may be the class of the conference
ASU is dealing with possible sanctions
USC has talent but Helton will limit them as well
UA is going to be outmatched much of the season
Utah has their qb and may run control lead the conference in offense and defense
Colorado will be steady like Cal
SO I see a 3 team race in the South between UCLA, Utah, and USC
In the North, Beavs may still have a shot to win 6 or 7, but I hope they can win all games against the teams form the north and probably get destroyed by the teams from the south at this point.
Wazzu isn’t really lighting up so far either. Finally took the lead against Utah St. 6-5 at the half. The Beavs will have some opportunities in league play if they play a little better than today.
Our offense played like absolute shit and still almost won. I see that as a big upside for the rest of the season. We were never going undefeated or going to the playoffs so one loss isn’t the end of the season unless we don’t learn anything from it. Honestly the north looks wide open.
Agreed. The problem with the defense was they were on the field 9 minutes longer than the offense. I didn’t make a prediction before the game, but I had my doubts about the offense holding up to Karlaftis on one hand and the defense with Bell on the other. Maybe the Beavs played the correct qb in the second half, or did the play calling adjustments help him out? I’m not too down on the 4&2 incompletion either. The jackhammer got stuffed a few drives before that; it’s on the qb to find the open man or run the keeper…To say nothing of boneheaded veteran mistakes. I’m also enjoying not being the most embarrassing pac12 loss today.
I recently posted that I thought threw a better ball than Gebbia not having seen Noyer play. It’s abundantly clear than Nolan is the clear starter until Gebbia returns. I don’t know how and the heck Noyer earned the starting job over Nolan. Although Beavers lost, they showed some potential with Nolan at QB. I thought the defense played well enough to win but those 4th down calls were just horrible. Beavers still have a shot to win some hamesvand have a decent season as Stanford sucks, ducks certainly don’t look like world beaters and aside from UCLA, the rest of the conference doesn’t appear to be great. One game doesn’take a season so let’s see how they rebound against Hawaii and if they don’t beat Hawaii by 21 or so, then I’ll be concerned. Purdue is a pretty decent team to losing on the road wasn’t a huge surprise althouogh I had beavers winning 28-23.
Bad news: Beavs look like a 5-7 team. Good news: The rest of the Pac-12 North doesn’t look great, and they may be able to cobble together six wins and go to a bowl game. Whatever you do today: Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame. A loss to FSU will make wins by USC and/or Stanford over the Domers meaningless
Defense: Roberts and Speights had great games. Skelton and Sio both looked good. Grant and Wright were very solid.
Offense: Lowe looked good. Nolan looked much improved. Bradford, Lindsay and Beason all looked like weapons.
I’ll have to rewatch but I think Noyer was dropping back too far making the angles really bad in pass pro. Oline looked way better with Nolan who was definitely stepping into a pocket and the DE’s started over running the pocket.
A bit of extra analysis on the defense and if it is improving or working.
In a good 3-4 the line essentially creates lanes for the ILB to attack, EDGE are on containment and pass rush duty and the secondary mostly sits back. The tackle breakdown should be something like 60% LB, 15% DL, 25% Secondary. If the DL is getting significant pressure then the Secondary number drops (less completions). If nothing else you would like 80%+ of the other teams completions to be tackled by the secondary. This is a bit rough because I didn’t track where all the secondary tackles occurred but I think it shows that the defense is really improving in the scheme and might be a significant help to this team if the offense actually plays some. This also is done with TOT which includes assists.
IMO if the offense had been playing as they did with Nolan the defense would have gotten much more rest and the D-Line and EDGE would have gotten to the qb more and they would have had fewer completions. The defense was all over Plummer for the first 4 series of the game before Stover got ejected and they got gased. The defense is finally working as it is designed schematically.
Despite all the other losses in the PAC yesterday, only 2 defenses gave up more than 400 yds…Beavs and WSU. Not sure why adjustments weren’t made to cover the TE…clearly out coached by Purdue. Could’ve had 2 more TDs but they dropped 2 passes in the end zone if I recall correctly. Think there were 3 other teams with 1 or less turnovers created in the PAC. I do think players were making quicker decisions than years past and there were a few players who stood out for sure but it still seemed like the same issues still persist. Tackling, 3rd and long, lack of consistent pressure, etc. Obviously a long way to go yet but a little concerning that these are all still problem areas. Offense definitely didn’t help the defense and that can be taken into consideration, however, good defenses create pressure and opportunities to help themselves and we unfortunately weren’t able to do that yesterday. Will be interesting to see which North division teams make improvements the rest of the year.
I think how the yards were gained should be looked at. We gave up 401 yards which is about 50 yards less than the 2020 and 2019 average. Plummer was a good QB, very accurate and good decision maker. I think the TEs were free because we were trying to contain Bell.
So yeah 313 yards through the air isn’t great but that’s gonna happen when a team can’t rush. That was the first game we held a P5 opponent under 100 yards rushing since WSU in 2019 butttt they had 600 yards passing.
Considering it was the first game of the season and the offense sucked I’m pleased with the defense. Tackling will get better, pressure will improve when they aren’t gassed and we I have a feeling Plummer will be one of the better quarterbacks we face this year.
First!
Go beavs! Hope they run the ball down their throats.
Go Beavs!
No Covid testing casualties for the Beavs today, per Daschel.
Anybody see the listed starters?
still 27 – 24 Beavs
I can’t remember the last time I saw a Beaver team ready to play and execute in the first game of the season. Watching these other games, there is a lot of rust to shake off. I’m hoping for a pleasant surprise today.
Go beavssss
Pound the rock, take care of the football, use play action, control yhe clock, and have solid special teams play and they win. Double karlaftis and don’t let him get any big momentum plays.
True words ^^^^
Orange glasses here, stickin’ with a 10 pt rodent win!
GO BEAVS!
Gebbia is dressed and warming up, but doesn’t look like he is getting ready to play.
Kickoff moved back 15 minutes. Some shitty baseball game has to complete.
Crappy but at least they’re delaying the game. Was maddening how many times last year the game started before the broadcast kicked in, as we watched the end of some blowout that no one cared about.
Why the heck don’t they go double screen in those situations??
Yeah 7 run difference. Just hurry up and get out.
It’s on FS2
And this boner is walking guys prolonging the game.
Pirate getting sunk by LA Tech.
Gumbs not with team, per daschel
That’s worth 7 or more points.
Yikes.
Beavs will receive kickoff
Bonehead penalty to start the game – costs them the series and have to punt.
Waited a whole offseason for that drive? Lol
Yep if they avoid that they’re still marching. Should’ve doubled karlaftis on that obvious passing down.
Mess up on special teams by lollygagging down the field. Had a chance to pin at the 1 and missed it. Looks like the same ol’ Beavs so far.
Well, just one drive so far but the DLine didn’t move an inch on the two runs and almost got Plummer. That’s different
D looked good.
33 was in the area? Was he in the stands?
Fans have the zebras confused
Speaking of, what crew is this?
Can’t have penalties. Pass rush looks good tho.
Just run Harrison deep on the first play after break.
TQ with a big one and BJ sprints it in untouched!!! Woooooooooo boi!!!
Great blocking on the TD
My boy Lindsey!
Immediately thought of you when he threw that lol
Finally brought the old sweep play back!
That’s more like it. Nice kix of play calls. Keep the BMs guessing
BMs lolol
Beav blowout. Let’s have an easy one for once.
34 -17 buddy
Sweet drive!! This is usually the point where D needs a stand and they don’t get one. Let’s see if that changes
Yeah, exactly, gotta be looking for changes. So far mostly good.
So, Lindsey drops his streak of TD passes to 50% ?
His poor QBR
That kicker Everett Hayes is quietly putting together a nice career. He’s never missed an XP
Where ya been?
tracking down the Chinese theft of Canadian viral research at the lab in Winnipeg
That’s the plot to a Bond film isn’t it?
no. it really happened. just put my phrase into Google and see what turns up on the CBC news web sites or the Toronto Globe & Mail.
3rd down stop, nice.
I think we got lucky on that no call on the end zone
LOL how is that not PI? I’ll take it though
I thought that at first but on replay he got his left hand in there and played the ball. I think they ignored the right because of that.
Good thing Plummer is a good runner. Guy hadn’t had a clean pocket yet.
Calibeav gets what he wants. TO probably means Purdue is punting
BMs are all kerfluffled.
What crew is this? Purdue fans sound like us. Is it possible we’re that team we’re always playing?
We found the Beavs of the BiG 10.
Bradford was open. bad throw
Whoa, wide open Bradford missed by Sam.
Terrible punt.
Defense is gonna have to carry us.
Sio looks really good early. Guy doesn’t move an inch
Our secondary is still a weakness.
Well NB Stover is in there
He’s out guaranteed
Looks like targeting.
Man, i like Stover. That’s a tough call if thisgets him booted
Ref is explaining to Smith, the problem is Stover doesnt play for Ohio State
And no look at intentional grounding??
Lookee like he threw it to a lineman to the TE
D looks better overall. Nice pressure and intensity.
Agreed. Bad punt and that missed throw by noyer put the defense in a bad spot
Terrible tackle attempt by Sharpe. He was staring at the ground and lunged. Embarrassing that effort.
Missed tackles haven’t changed.
I saw 6 plays identical in Ohio St and Alabama games, never a targeting…
It is becoming an advantageous strtaegy for the haves and always a game changing call for the have-nots
This Colletto package is a genuine thing.
Terrible job by Musgrave on that block.
Yeah, just ran right past.
Crazy legs!
Big Jim Wilson thinks Noyer could have run for the 1st
The punter as well!
Maybe. He’d have to take a big hit to get there.
Well, throwing it away on 3rd down doesn’t make much sense if you can run for 5 yds and slide.
Not liking Noyer so far.
I am not liking his protection. Hard to make throws with no room.
Haha! Great Punt!
That was fun to see even if he didn’t run for it. It’ll make Purdue have to account for that
Noyer is not impressive so far. Blocking hasn’t helped. And Lowe had a big play in there that he missed. Need Noyer to get comfortable fast
I’m not a fan of Whorebath.
Terrible spot! Wow!
Guess we’re getting screwed with spots again this year
Nice tackle by Captain Grant!
Was that really a 1st? Whorebag seemed short.
Why didn’t Smith challenge that spot?
He probably had a better view.
I think I saw the ref say “close enough…”
Noyer sucks
Really like the defense. There has been blunders but the line is much better. LBs are playing very fast and free.
I agree, they look so much more athletic than in years past. This is a decent offense they are facing too!
noyer has that nice long ball feel like the early Luton
Musgrave getting beat lol beat bad in Pass protection
Ya hes been terrible in blocking. He messed up a run block too.
Bad play calling… hope they change this up
Why not run the ball? Noyer looks really bad so far
I don’t get it, three terrible pass plays… they need to pull Noyer he’s had open guys and missed every time
Who the hell is Noyer throwing too? How’d he win the qb competition?
Wow, Noyer’s long ball accuracy is pretty bad
Was about to say the same thing. But, I wouldnt limit it to long throws.
what’s Noyer’s completion rate so far?
We need a healthy Gebbia
Offensive play calling is awful. Add that to Noyer being awful and we have to hope our defense can hold on.
Yep need the defense to put offense in a good position or just score by themselves
So we end in a 7-7 tie?
I don’t know how the lights are too bright for Noyer, but they definitely are.
Noyer is looking suspect to say the least
Noyer looking really shaky .. and that was an absolutely terrible series of play calls by Lindgren / JS… Would love to see what Fenwick has because Baylor and Lowe have seemed a little tentative and missed a few lanes
Why are they not doubling karlaftis? The rest of this d sux.
Why double block the best player? Remember the Alamo, that’s what Beavs do!
….or don’t do.
We’ve looked a lot like the “same ol beavs” the past 10 or 15 minutes.
I’m out. I have senior enough…better put on chance Nolan as Noyer is not very good.
Seen. enough…..wtf auto correct interprets seen preceded by I have to senior?
That’s enough, señor.
7-10 game and you’re “out” already?
Beav D looking gassed already
Purdue looks much more physical.
Good adjustment on that 2nd down. Plummer is getting it out fast with designed plays and we dropped into 3-3-5
Franke is a monster with speed
Need to sustain a five minute drive and let the defense rest.
Noyer’s best pass so far may have been the backwards pass to Tyjon
Need to run the ball. Noyer needs glasses more than Nolan does.
Wish granted. I like how Lowe attacks the LOS. He’s gonna miss openings but I doubt he gets hit 3 yards deep much.
Why is collecto returning kick offs?
No clue.
He is setup to be the lead blocker generally. Should of called a fair catch.
Our o line is getting blown up.
Anyone else notice Noyer is much more accurate on the run?
That was the worst 2 yard gain ever.
Yikes, lucky to get away with a positive gain there
How was THAT not a late hit on Noyer?!?!
You have to tap his upper shoulders a bit
That was just as late as any roughing penalty I’ve seen today.
Atrocious.
Good lord the penalties have been bad.
Just awful play calling.
they need to double up on Karloftis
Yes that’s what ive been saying.
If kipper wants to go to the NFL he should probably get infront of a DE this game
True, but for today he has got to be given some help.
Maybe he doesn’t want to go to the NFL and wants to cement that.
That collecto return is a bad look. Ditch that statim.
If our o line is supposed to be the strength of this team, we’re in for a long year…again.
Noyer is the real problem so far. Not sure why people loved a guy with 6TDs and 8INTs
He has Karleftis in his lap all game, though.
Step up and run around him, improvise, etc…that’s supposed to be what he’s good at.
Shitty coaching job on offense
OL play looks disappointing. Noyer doing well to avoid sacks.
Half time adjustments?
Past Beav teams in a similar position have wilted going into half time. If the Beavs D can hold here, that’s a big improvement.
Nicely done. Now dont give possession back before half time. Offense needs to put something together
nice short field to work with here
4 minute drill time. I know the practiced it
a shitload.
Haven’t seen a screen all game.
Somehow I don’t think that’s how they practiced it
They’re really asking alot of the defense today
Nice tackle by Colletto, told y’all he’d be in the running for Defense MVP.
Shouldn’t have to wait tell half time to make coaching adjustments
When u don’t have time to sit down with your team because theyre back out there in a minute it does.
locked in early and threw badly
What did I say about Noyer’s TD to INT ratio…………sigh.
Right on. Int’s are the worst followed by the hospital balls.
Shit that was close. Good effort from Wright
I may throw away these orange glasses, that int shouldn’t be a surprise; I just didn’t want to believe it.
Critical time…last few seconds of the half…..it’s on the D again.
If Noyer is our best qb we are in for a long year
Hopefully Gebbia is back soon.
Like after halftime.
So Noyer won the competition? Looking like 0-3 unless Gebbia comes back.
Well if we learned one thing with Smith it’s that when we call for a new qb the next guy up looks like shit. Come back soon Gebbia
Well the Noyer experiment has been fun.
Skip Nolan and bring in Vidlak, the future is now!
Just toss in Gulbranson. Maybe his left arm works?
Only realized football season was starting a few days ago. Decided to get a Hulu live TV sub this morning because eh, why not, watch football a few months…
Took one quarter for me to remember why I stopped getting emotionally invested in this stuff.
It’s just entertainment, it’s not a girlfriend.
Wait, this is entertainment? lol
Are you not entertained!!?
I have to ask if I am since I’m still watching, but I can’t ignore the “I had a beer and I’m too lazy to get up” and “already watched a half, might as well finish it off sunk-cost” effects
I am not.
Wright is looking legit. Bell is very good.
No catch.
Can no one throw the ball? Why can’t anyone throw the ball?
Clearly not a catch.
No catch
Beavs get lucky there, but the most Beaver thing ever will be to give up a real TD pass on the next play
This is some 4D Beaver analysis
ICE !!
Purdue FG kicker looks younger than J. Smith, it may work.
ADD:…..or maybe not
He’s good
That was an aggressive knee.
QB change?
YES!!!!!!
Yes please. Nothing to lose.
Don’t hold your breathe. Smith hasn’t made a QBR change at OSU without an injury.
Yeah, I’m not expecting a QB change. But if they don’t change something to block Karleftis, JS will be forced to change QB because Noyer will be in the hospital.
This is an awful game, btw. Super boring.
An unimpressive first half, let’s see if Smith has any adjustments in mind. Did they scout Karlaftis at all? Shades of Okafor and the Alamo Bowl. Can’t shake the “Riley Gene” completely out of the program.
Dumb question, but is it pass pro or the QB thats holding the beavs back right now?
We’re super fucked with Noyer. I know a guy that might deserve a CHANCE. Or maybe we could get a Mr. Miyagi halftime moment on Gebbia’s hamstring.
We do have a stable of running backs, Lindgren, maybe we can consider using them.
Offensive line/Musgrave struggling. Need to run the ball straight up the gut and double karlaftis. Noyer is sucking but also needs more time and hasn’t had run game help. Have we seen Fenwick?
Anyone else feel like there has been a few missed holding calls?
Dreading Whiskey’s post-game comment. “I told ya so ya dumb fuck homer shithead koolaid drinkin’ sucker fuckers!!!”
Wow he’s like MGTOW for the beavs
Scotty is Beav MGTOW…haha.
Haha! Classic.
Can’t blow this game based on “feelings”. If the line can’t hold out in a QB who can run
What?
Auto correct wins I give up
Remember this staff has been very good at second half adjustments so lets hope that holds true for this game and they can win it there.
Defense was very good, minus the penalties. B+
Offense was not. Plays are developing too slowly, and there was no chance for Noyer to get into a rhythm. That is primarily on Lindgren. D-
They need to slow down the pass rush, and make high completion throws. I’d like to see more WR screens and mesh/crossing routes. Go Beavs!
Yes please. Middle of the field has barely been looked at.
Agree. I think they should run straight up the gut and go with quick high completion passes in the second half.
Seriously luck o da Beavs to have Gebbia get hurt in camp. Seems like we’re always missing one piece of the puzzle.
Exactly. If they ever have a 5star qb and 5star lines they’ll have a -5 star kicker and ST unit that allows 7tds per game.
This will be win in the trenches in the second half. Oline needs to assert itself and let the run game go. D line needs to get more pressure. Purdue’s misses have been when pressure had come or the qb dumps it off for short gain.
They’ve had decent pressure and then held right before they get to the QB no call. The Oline needs to step up big time.
I’m not sure it’s wise to put Nolan (definitely not Vidlak) in there with the lack of pass protection unless Nolan is going to do a bunch if read option? I can’t see Nolan throwing accurately in this context?
O is asking D to do too much, will catch up w/them.
39 rushing yds with this O line?
Bell looked short. No look? Smith didn’t ask for a look?
Wright is playing so far off Bell now. Totally afraid of him.
That’s determined by Tibs.
Tibs should’ve been gone after last year
I know almost shit about football but goddamn I hate that our DBs seem to always play off the receiver by like 5-8 yards.
A 3rd and 13 crossing route to the guy you should have game planned to stop shouldn’t beat you.. then at 12 men on the field not looking good
Sad how the unbridled enthusiasm wears off so quickly. Glad we’re giving up the 3rd and long again. Called for Tibs to go 2 years ago and still calling for it. Tackling is still bad.
Welcome to Angrybeavs.
Captain Grant!
So good
So lucky.
Holy shit what a play by Jaydon Grant!
That targeting was the turning point. Stover goes low instead of high and I believe it would be 3rd and long or 4th down?
Or maybe the Grant pick was the turning point.
Didn’t matter where he hit. He was ruled to lead with the crown which is auto targeting.
Don’t think so, if he’s at the knees or lower, it’s a no-call.
concur
Gotta wonder what that Purdue coach was thinking faking it there.
To the mooon!!!
Too much Champ Flemings.
Yea!
Lindsay with a great route and knowing where the line was.
Colletto on first and second down now? Seems like a good idea.
Jack hammmerrrrr
Better than these deep sideline shots out of bounds
The long ball is dumb. O line can’t protect long enough and Noyer not accurate. Dumb.
Yup, cross, outs and buttons have worked well. More of that tell they drop rushers.
Keep ’em honest.
Weird game script… Thought the zone read with Noyer would be a staple
Smith has the qb to do it but he never runs that.
Oh boy. Is this the go for it 2021?
Noyer has had time on the last few pass plays, accuracy?…..not so much.
His accuracy is bad. I don’t think any of our transfer qbs really have accuracy.
Gulbranson or Vidlak better get the nod next year.
No hope for Noyer. That last pass sealed it. Time to give Nolan a chance.
Should have a Noyer run/pass option type play here. Don’t disagree to go for it given how much the D has been on the field.
Even when Noyer does have time he has happy feet and looks scared. He is inaccurate and makes poor decisions.
Exactly what we saw with Nolan last year in his first start
Yeah but this ain’t Noyer’s first start.
After Lowe got them 3rd and 2 they should have lined up quickly and got Lowe the ball again…
Sigh
Stupid call. 2 yards is too much for Colletto.
No it wasn’t. Only bc they didn’t get it. Next time they go, they’ll get a big gain by flipping it to the rb or the wr.
2 yds has been no problem with straight dive, play was too cute.
Could have done back to back Colleto dives and been fine, but Lindgren screwed that 3rd down pass play call when we only needed 2 to keep the drive alive.
Stupid call. Wrong side of the 50
Where’s Wannabeav?
the bad call was going long on 3rd
Looks over Unless there’s a few key TOs.
I mean not really. We’re a touchdown away from a lead.
Yep, Beavs can’t score on offense.
That’s def not a catch.
Where’s the hold on that?
They betyer review that catch.
Good, he didnt have possession till he dragged out
Uhhhhhhh?
I don’t think that was a catch. His outside foot was not down….wrong?
This team is so frustrating to watch
this coaching staff is frustrating to watch
Fire tibs
It really is.
You mean this year’s team, or Beaver football in general?
D line is getting beat up. Offense really needs to step up and save them
Told y’all, Colletto may be MVP of the D
Purdue is a very average team, at best.
So we’re not going to win the North this year? Shoot.
Maybe bring in Harrison for Flemings? I don’t understand why Champ seems to be on the field every play. He does nothing vs legit competition.
Time to figure things out
Jim Wilson says it’s time for a new QB
Same story. Can’t get a game where all three phases of the team play well. Defense grinding. Shit or get off the pot with Noyer. Won’t happen though. Smith will play him until gebbia is healthy.
Defense is improved. At least against Purdue-no idea how good their offense really is. Noyer=horrible
This is not on the defense. They are much better. But this offense has been terrible against a below average Purdue defense. Letting a winnable game get away from them. Uggh.
Completely agree. Purdue defense looks all world. But that happens when you can’t complete a forward pass
Different QB, same shit results
Tough first play call. Why not run more? Let’s get a drive going
New QB and the first play is a long pass? WTF is wrong with our coaches?
Better completion percentage though. Vidlak and Gulbranson gotta be licking their chops at the competition in front of them.
What?
Typed that after his first pass which wasnt anywhere close to catchable.
The rest have been catchable, thankfully.
Makes a hige difference when the receivers are actually involved
Good on the coach’s pulling the plug. Have Noyer ample time. Now we need Nolan to take us to the promise land
if you think about it, a succession of three OSU coaching staffs, hasn’t made the right call on starting QB since half way into the 2012 season, when Riley brought Mannion back too early to replace Vaz.
World Wildlife Fund?
Ma boy Lindsey!
Nolan is clearly better, so Smith made another error.
If Nolan can get the ball down a bit, he could be the savior.
A WR screen to Beason goes a long way. Go figure.
Team Nolan here. Much better positivity in his approach and mentality on the field. Understands it takes plays to win games and goes out with rmeaningful intent to execute those plays.
Personnel errors I have: Champ, Noyer
I’d like to see Lowe more too. Had a couple good runs but then immediately pulled.
I noticed that too watching Noyers games at Colorado. Never seemed set at all which could explain his 55% completion rate and abysmal int ratio.
My personal belief is that the coaches put a lot of weight on his experience leading Colorado to a 4-2 record.
Ma boy Lohalehi (sp??)
Almost got it, haha
Holding all day by o line
Murray has been all over the place. Looks to be taking over ham’s role
Angry: good calls on Lindsey and Lolohea.
What about being skeptical of Noyer? ;)
Keys to winning the game:
1) break Bells legs
2) break the plumbers legs
3) break Whorvats legs
This game is so winnable.. let’s go!
In defense of champ he has beat his defender, Nolan just couldn’t get the ball to him
According to those at the game Noyer missed two easy tds by not throwing the ball to open receivers.
Defense seems much better, still not good, but better. All of those field goals would have been touchdowns anytime in the last 8 years.
This game is so winnable, let’s go!
Very quiet here now….
Here, too.
Damn Nous. Does this bring up Brewer?
OL depth starting to get thin with Bloomfeld and Fuaga put already
The Psu transfer Sorensen I would think?
Good on the coach’s for running it. I like Nolan rolling away from that Kalafatis kid and either hitting an open receiver or picking it up with his feet
Unbelievable call.
Smith putting it on the D
The ol’ 4th and 1 wild gamble…that costs us the game.
Terrible coaching
We make the most idiotic play calls. Wtf are Smith and Lindgren doing? Do they have money on Purdue?
I’m not defending that 4th down call.
Degenerate gambler…bad call on that side of the field.
Fuck.
Was winnable.
that aspect of Smith’s coaching personality profile comes from his time with Dennis. Except Dennis had clutch talent at every position, notably at QB
Maybe Dennis should call him and tell him that.
Anyone want to cover a TE? Tibs needs to go.
Smith definitely lost his mind gambling on that. WHy not punt and oin them deep, or try Colletto to keep the drive going. Easy in hindsight I guess, but man that is a bad way to begin the year.
Don’t mind going for it there but hate hate hate the play all. Coaching malpractice to go deep when you desperately need a yard.
Easy in foresight, too.
This loss is on Lindgren (and Smith). Tibs had a great scheme against a pretty good offense.
FUCK.
Too much of these calls and they’ll lose the players.
Clown shoes
Whhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy fucking a man Jesus Christ there was absolutely no reason to go for it on our side of the 50. Plenty of time left on the clock now we just handed the game to them.
So what does losing to one of the worst teams in the Big 10 mean for the season? Anyone changing their prediction after 1 game?
This one is on smith. First time I have said that
Nolan looks so much more “with it” out there.
Nolan is clicking. Like the decisive running.
Nolan is a gamer. Not the cleanest but keeps it moving.
Good job players.
Poor job Smith. THINK.
So the other glaring thing is clearly Nolan is better and more comfortable than Noyer.. so how did this staff f that decision up so royally??
Yep asked that above. Had to have been obvious in practice. This difference doesn’t just happen.
For real.. so frustrating
Huh…Champ.
Champ! Burning fools
Deep or onside?!?
JFC night and day difference
Out coached…
Offense sure is better when the mail qb can hit anything
Tibs gets outsmarted again.
Tibs was not the problem tonight
Tibs is WAY down on the list of offenders!
the answer to the question why Noyer? The OSU “seniority” culture. It’s durable, and it’s apparent in other sports too.
Well, at least they had me till the end. Good night all
They rub it in on that call and say, “Smith, this is how you actually pull that play off.”
He lost it early with a bad decision on the starting QB.
great insight, beav4ever
Same old OSU…I revoke all optimism and all outrageous predictions. The coaching has some real problems that won’t likely be overcome. Another year and another disappointment..
Same shit, one possession short, and a poor coaching decision.
Maybe Nolan throwing hospital balls is why he didn’t start?
We’re 9 deep at WR.. let it ride. Noyer looked awful and lost
I could fucking hit Smith right now.
Fire tibs
What? He was not the problem
We’re not going to find a better DC than Tibs at 600K. The scheme was very good tonight considering no Hodgins or Jones.
The defense was ok, but I would have liked to see someone cover the TE in the second half.
You’re joking, right?
Agree. Been making this call since year 2. Same issues as every season. Bad tackling. 3rd and long doesn’t mean anything, in fact, might be easier for teams than 3rd or 4th and short. Except now these players are mostly his “guys” and yet same issues persist.
That was a terrible loss.
I think Smith simply has an impatient and reckless personality. Listen to him talk. It’s fast, jittery, etc…has no patience even when speaking. He’s hardwired this way. It’s going to be the death of him as a coach.
Was that not a amazing play by DB?
Not so much amazing as smart. He kept to his assignment and wasn’t fooled. The Beav receiver didn’t really even get separation on his route.
Game was winnable, Noyer showed us what he’s got and I doubt we see him throw another ball in his career.
Defense is definitely improved. I can with zero help they gave up 400 yards but less than 100 rushing. Bowl game looks good to me. Gonna go drink more
Nolan looked alright, but terrible charging cost the game again
Nolan start would have given us more than a Chance to win. Looked like a different team when he was in. I thought the defense did their job tonight. Offense lost the game. Too bad… this could have been a win with Nolan through out the game.
The pandemic solidified the lesson that winners win and losers lose. These programs are both losers, so it was close, but Purdue isn’t quite as bad a loser and they prevailed.
I dunno, what’s there really to say about the team at this point *shrug*
And winners breed winners. If Noyer transferred to Oregon he’d win a Heisman.
Normally I don’t comment on coaching decisions or I can at least rationalize them. But this game…
With the receivers we have, why not get them ball in space. Beason showed what he can do when it happens. Too many timing routes that were not even close. I will accept this terrible loss only if we don’t do it against a pac12 team. Same crap though.
That was my point. Noyer could have had a good game if Lindgren didn’t call plays that took 5 seconds to develop. It shattered his confidence.
The receivers (Tongue, Harrison, Beason, Bradford) are physical in space and will get at least 5 yards on a screen.
I know you guys are feeling sad but atleast you aren’t UW losing to Montana at home by 6 with 2 minutes to go sad.
Back to reality. I guess they are our Beavers after all.
Smith’s 4th down calls are actually a loser mentality. “I don’t think I can win w/out a long shot gamble.” The odds are awkward with the house.
A deep pass to only ONE WR out on a route, or a multitude of ways to get 1 yard.
Do you buy lottery tickets for your fucking retirement?!?
It seems like there has to be a quick check down or a QB option to run if the receiver does not break completely free. It did not fool Purdue’s coverage assignment. There wasn’t even separation on the route.
There was. I thought Lowe was open in the flat right away. He runs hard. I’d trust him.
Totally agree.
I really blame OSU leadership for not establishing commitment to a higher standard for this team.
We need a real coach…someone call Chris Peterson to come out of retirement. If that happens, I will open the purse strings.
Not ready to say he’s bad or we should fire him, but it’s warming now
I think the Gulbranson injury is going to haunt Smith tonight
I stepped away and missed this… what happened?
That Washington HC had some seriously bad body language. Might have lost his team game 1.
That was creepily like watching a Gary Anderson team but with the Huskies.
3 INTS. Wow. Wasn’t Morris a 4* QB.
This is what we get for running Riley out of town. 6 going on 7 years w/o a winning record…
He went 4-8 at Nebraska, including a Saturday night primetime 62-3 loss at OSU.
No thanks.
Riley would be going @ 3 win seasons now, max. It’s on the AD. He ought to be in Smith’s fucking ear tonight.
OSU had its best chance in years to go 3-0 preseason, half way to bowl eligibility.
Running Riley out of town?? Where you gettin’ your news?
Riley ran himself out of town.
Thought he biked out of town?
Didn’t he bike down to California to talk to the Nebraksa AD about the job because BDC had asked the little bitch to make some changes?
With how bad Stanford and Washington imploded, I think 6-6 is reasonable.
I’d like to think so but first need to see the next two weeks.
Sosdd as they say. I just say make sure you have a clear upgrade willing to take the job if you fire Smith.
Most definitely agree. I think Smith has it in him. Just needs to not put the team behind on overly risky gambles. And tonight it was obvious, he (or lindgren) chose the wrong qb.
Punting is a lot like castling. It’s not a sexy move, but it’s extremely powerful.
Maybe punting is a lot like small ball in baseball……..worked darn well for the warted one!
UCLA is representing. Chipster might be getting his grove back.
Bad memories of how effective his run game is.
Doubt promises were made other than an opportunity. If gebbia was ready, he would have played over Noyer.
So no chance he was given the idea that it will be a two man race between you and Gebbia?
Don’t know, just sayin’
Mike chose to leave for more $$$.
Otherwise, a lot of your post is on.
Glad to hear your thoughts, but:
“running Mike Riley out of town”
Revisionist history seems alive and well tonight.
That part was a little bit of an overreaction. Still a little fired up and angry. You’re right about that.
You, sir, are a stand up person. Please share your thoughts here more often.
Mike wasn’t run out of town. He bolted at the first sign of pressure from within the athletic department. The Texas bowl loss was the catalyst.
Good post otherwise.
He wasn’t run out of town per se but it was clearly indicated to him if he didn’t make staff changes, he would be on a short leash.
Then he fired his longtime DC by phone under pressure from fro NU AD….
You’re totally right. I misspoke.
Agree with most of your post. Not sure if defense is a bright spot though. Looks better than 5 years ago but still bad and imo will still be one of the bottom 2 defenses in the PAC again. I’m a broken record but Tibs and his schemes aren’t working.
2.7 YPC for Purdue, even with Hodgins out. I don’t think we want to go back to the days of giving up 7 yards a carry.
Purdue had a good game plan, and took advantage of the mismatches with Bell and their receiving backs.
What VerySadBeaverFan said.
This was an opportunity to make a move. uW Stanford(?) choke, UO unimpressive…..
Yep anyone complaining pac12 doesn’t get into the playoffs, is absolutely dillusional. UCLA looked good, but this isn’t LSU 2 years ago. LSU is likely not a bowl team this year.
Pac12 is bad at football.
Beavs will have a chance in conference. North is horrible.
As long as Saban is coaching at Bama, it’s all just sort of effing around anyway for all the other teams as far as playoffs/New Year’s Bowl Games.
It should have been a win and a season narrative changer.
2-1, non-conference now.
Cal just lost to Nevada and Wazzu coug’ed it so the P-12 North mediocrity continues at least for today.
I don’t think things will get much better next week. Only OSU and WSU have realistic chances of winning.
UO @ tOSU, Cal @ TCU, UW @ Michigan, Tree @ USC, and Wazzu home vs. Portland State.
It’s worth mentioning that Wazzu lost to PSU in 2015.
And some guy named Calvin Tyler Jr ran for 6.0 ypc for USU.
Good for him. He had his chances and was not what the answer. Lowe needs more touches. Runs hard and can catch out of the backfield.
We should do well against WSU then. Glad to hear Tyler is getting good touches!
Glad I missed this one. It sounds like a continuation of fall camp performance (with a little less optimism about the D).
I’m not seeing many comments about the OL, but it must have been pretty bad looking at our running stat line. QB situation is worse than expected.
Who were our best players on offense and defense?
Purdue (29 Completions) –
ILB: 27 Tackles (41%)
EDGE: 10 Tackles (15%)
Secondary: 21 Tackles (32% total, 72% of completions)
Line: 8 tackles (12%)
Post game thoughts up in a new thread.
I’m going to be hitting the road bike so behave!
