  1. I can’t remember the last time I saw a Beaver team ready to play and execute in the first game of the season. Watching these other games, there is a lot of rust to shake off. I’m hoping for a pleasant surprise today.

  2. Pound the rock, take care of the football, use play action, control yhe clock, and have solid special teams play and they win. Double karlaftis and don’t let him get any big momentum plays.

Mess up on special teams by lollygagging down the field. Had a chance to pin at the 1 and missed it. Looks like the same ol’ Beavs so far.

I saw 6 plays identical in Ohio St and Alabama games, never a targeting…

It is becoming an advantageous strtaegy for the haves and always a game changing call for the have-nots

  5. Noyer looking really shaky .. and that was an absolutely terrible series of play calls by Lindgren / JS… Would love to see what Fenwick has because Baylor and Lowe have seemed a little tentative and missed a few lanes

  6. I may throw away these orange glasses, that int shouldn’t be a surprise; I just didn’t want to believe it.

Critical time…last few seconds of the half…..it’s on the D again.

    • Well if we learned one thing with Smith it’s that when we call for a new qb the next guy up looks like shit. Come back soon Gebbia

Only realized football season was starting a few days ago. Decided to get a Hulu live TV sub this morning because eh, why not, watch football a few months…
Took one quarter for me to remember why I stopped getting emotionally invested in this stuff.

    • An unimpressive first half, let’s see if Smith has any adjustments in mind. Did they scout Karlaftis at all? Shades of Okafor and the Alamo Bowl. Can’t shake the “Riley Gene” completely out of the program.

  8. We’re super fucked with Noyer. I know a guy that might deserve a CHANCE. Or maybe we could get a Mr. Miyagi halftime moment on Gebbia’s hamstring.

We do have a stable of running backs, Lindgren, maybe we can consider using them.

  9. Offensive line/Musgrave struggling. Need to run the ball straight up the gut and double karlaftis. Noyer is sucking but also needs more time and hasn’t had run game help. Have we seen Fenwick?

Anyone else feel like there has been a few missed holding calls?

  10. Remember this staff has been very good at second half adjustments so lets hope that holds true for this game and they can win it there.

  11. Defense was very good, minus the penalties. B+

Offense was not. Plays are developing too slowly, and there was no chance for Noyer to get into a rhythm. That is primarily on Lindgren. D-

They need to slow down the pass rush, and make high completion throws. I’d like to see more WR screens and mesh/crossing routes. Go Beavs!

  12. This will be win in the trenches in the second half. Oline needs to assert itself and let the run game go. D line needs to get more pressure. Purdue’s misses have been when pressure had come or the qb dumps it off for short gain.

  13. I’m not sure it’s wise to put Nolan (definitely not Vidlak) in there with the lack of pass protection unless Nolan is going to do a bunch if read option? I can’t see Nolan throwing accurately in this context?

O is asking D to do too much, will catch up w/them.

  14. A 3rd and 13 crossing route to the guy you should have game planned to stop shouldn’t beat you.. then at 12 men on the field not looking good

  15. Sad how the unbridled enthusiasm wears off so quickly. Glad we’re giving up the 3rd and long again. Called for Tibs to go 2 years ago and still calling for it. Tackling is still bad.

    • His accuracy is bad. I don’t think any of our transfer qbs really have accuracy.

Gulbranson or Vidlak better get the nod next year.

  16. Maybe bring in Harrison for Flemings? I don’t understand why Champ seems to be on the field every play. He does nothing vs legit competition.

  17. Not really impressed with Jonathan Smith win % at OSU. Is pretty low, just like expectations by the fanbase. Not running Colletto on 3rd and 2 was a mistake. In general Smith and Lindgen usually have a few bad calls a game at inopportune times. Very often they contribute to us losing much more than we are winning. Time to figure things out

  18. Same story. Can’t get a game where all three phases of the team play well. Defense grinding. Shit or get off the pot with Noyer. Won’t happen though. Smith will play him until gebbia is healthy.

  19. This is not on the defense. They are much better. But this offense has been terrible against a below average Purdue defense. Letting a winnable game get away from them. Uggh.

if you think about it, a succession of three OSU coaching staffs, hasn’t made the right call on starting QB since half way into the 2012 season, when Riley brought Mannion back too early to replace Vaz.

  21. 1
    1

Team Nolan here. Much better positivity in his approach and mentality on the field. Understands it takes plays to win games and goes out with rmeaningful intent to execute those plays.

  22. Personnel errors I have: Champ, Noyer

Any others? Musgrave has looked bad blocking. Maybe Overman should get those reps. I’m not convinced Fendwick shouldn’t be getting way more carries, either.

    • I think we have the right personnel, besides Champ. Maybe play Harrison and Tongue more because they are more physical. Getting the ball to those guys in space is going to be key for success in this offense, even if it is a 4 yard gain.

I won’t be too hard on Noyer. I think he would have had a good game if Lindgren called plays that got him into a rhythm. Not this “throw a deep fade to 5’5 Champ Flemings” strategy

  23. 1
    1

Noyer seemed to throw off his back foot a lot and never seemed in rhythm other than a few throws. Nolan looked in rhythm on every pass, and you have to assume he knows the playbook a lot better. Makes me wonder what Smith was thinking because this had to have been happening in practice.

      1

I noticed that too watching Noyers games at Colorado. Never seemed set at all which could explain his 55% completion rate and abysmal int ratio.

My personal belief is that the coaches put a lot of weight on his experience leading Colorado to a 4-2 record.

  24. Defense seems much better, still not good, but better. All of those field goals would have been touchdowns anytime in the last 8 years.

  25. Good on the coach’s for running it. I like Nolan rolling away from that Kalafatis kid and either hitting an open receiver or picking it up with his feet

  26. Smith definitely lost his mind gambling on that. WHy not punt and oin them deep, or try Colletto to keep the drive going. Easy in hindsight I guess, but man that is a bad way to begin the year.

  27. 2
    4

Whhhhyyyyyyyyyyyy fucking a man Jesus Christ there was absolutely no reason to go for it on our side of the 50. Plenty of time left on the clock now we just handed the game to them.

  28. 1
    1

So the other glaring thing is clearly Nolan is better and more comfortable than Noyer.. so how did this staff f that decision up so royally??

  29. 6
    2

My take on Smith as a head coach. He is an ex qb who wants the attention on him. He is not happy with a grind it out win. He wants
to make calls that are off the wall to put the spot light on him. Problem is they aren’t working and it is costing the beavs games. This
loss is squarely on smith. This was a winnable game that he stopped us from winning. I feel bad for the players.

  30. 6
    1

Same old OSU…I revoke all optimism and all outrageous predictions. The coaching has some real problems that won’t likely be overcome. Another year and another disappointment..

  31. 3
    2

I think Smith simply has an impatient and reckless personality. Listen to him talk. It’s fast, jittery, etc…has no patience even when speaking. He’s hardwired this way. It’s going to be the death of him as a coach.

  32. 5
    1

Game was winnable, Noyer showed us what he’s got and I doubt we see him throw another ball in his career.

Defense is definitely improved. I can with zero help they gave up 400 yards but less than 100 rushing. Bowl game looks good to me. Gonna go drink more

  33. Nolan start would have given us more than a Chance to win. Looked like a different team when he was in. I thought the defense did their job tonight. Offense lost the game. Too bad… this could have been a win with Nolan through out the game.

  34. 3
    4

The pandemic solidified the lesson that winners win and losers lose. These programs are both losers, so it was close, but Purdue isn’t quite as bad a loser and they prevailed.
I dunno, what’s there really to say about the team at this point *shrug*

      • 1
        1

No. There is a reason he left Colorado. He wasn’t going to start. Not sure why the excitement when he transferred here. If he is our best option we are screwed. Didn’t have good numbers at Colorado. Usually qbs do better here with smiths offense.

        • That was my thought at first then Daschel and the coaching staff started pumping him up. Shame on me for not knowing better. He’s thrown for just 1200 yards total in his career. He was only a starter last year. Colorado tried to turn him into a safety. He played last year due to injuries. Reality reared its ugly head tonight.

  35. With the receivers we have, why not get them ball in space. Beason showed what he can do when it happens. Too many timing routes that were not even close. I will accept this terrible loss only if we don’t do it against a pac12 team. Same crap though.

    • That was my point. Noyer could have had a good game if Lindgren didn’t call plays that took 5 seconds to develop. It shattered his confidence.

The receivers (Tongue, Harrison, Beason, Bradford) are physical in space and will get at least 5 yards on a screen.

  36. 5
    1

Smith’s 4th down calls are actually a loser mentality. “I don’t think I can win w/out a long shot gamble.” The odds are awkward with the house.

A deep pass to only ONE WR out on a route, or a multitude of ways to get 1 yard.

Do you buy lottery tickets for your fucking retirement?!?

  37. 5
    1

Why does OSU schedule tougher teams to open the season. The 3 out of conference teams should have been reversed in order. Could have figured out the QB situation and won at the same time.

  38. Once Nolan ran a couple of plays, it became apparent to me how lost Noyer was when he was out there. I mean WTF, this is a sixth-year senior and he played like he didn’t know the offense. One of the most productive plays when he was on the field was a trick play where Lindsay threw the ball.

  39. 4
    2

I really blame OSU leadership for not establishing commitment to a higher standard for this team.

We need a real coach…someone call Chris Peterson to come out of retirement. If that happens, I will open the purse strings.

  40. 2

    Game 1 knee jerk reactions:
    1) tackling still not good. Defense at times looked better but gave up 400 plus yards and 3rd and long still an issue. Also, didn’t game plan to cover the TE at all. Tibs needs to go. Same story, new year.

    2) No offensive identity. Must not be to confident in the run game as it was non-existent even when your QB is throwing the ball 15 yards beyond anyone.

    3) I said it was Gebbia’s job to lose and it should be between him and Nolan when he gets healthy.

    4) questionable calls again. While talent (at least from a star ranking aspect) is getting better, still make the same dumb river boat gambler calls and putting team in bad position.

    5) losing to one of the worst teams in big 10 doesn’t give me much confidence for the conference games.

1 game doesn’t define the season so maybe my fears are unfounded but it seems like we have the same issues now as we did in year 1 under Smith but now most the players are from the new coaching group. So was it really the wrong players or is it ineffective coaching?

    • 3
      1

Most definitely agree. I think Smith has it in him. Just needs to not put the team behind on overly risky gambles. And tonight it was obvious, he (or lindgren) chose the wrong qb.

  41. I don’t put a lot of stock in game one. A lot of good teams came out rusty today. Another week of Nolan working with the 1s should loosen things up a bit. We’ll see what they can do against Hawaii.
I mean, when was the last time the Beavers played a good game one?

    • Although, the next defense will game plan for Nolan. He won’t have the same advantage coming in with 17 minutes left in the game. He didn’t squint tonight!!!

  42. 1
    1

Way wild theory on why Noyer was given the start:
What if promises were made when he transferred in to the Beavs?
If so, has he been given enough of a shot to have fulfilled any agreement?

BIG JIM thinks it’s still a competition; expects no announced change.

  43. 11

Been a causal reader of this site for a couple of years, finally joining because I have many thoughts to unload from this one.

    1. Let’s start with the simplest of the issues. What happened during fall camp? What did the coaching staff see that made them think Noyer was the guy? It made sense to me when the decision was announced. I thought, okay, senior with PAC-12 experience. Gebbia should most likely be the starter, but if his health is a factor, going with Noyer made sense to me. So what did the coaches see during the camp? The inability to select the correct quarterback is frightening. Shatters the trust factor between fans and coach. How can we trust their judgment? And more on that later with the playcalling). Nolan looked way more comfortable, used his legs when he was in trouble. Some throws were a bit high off not totally accurate but he made the plays he needed to. Makes you wonder what happens if he starts the game. Again, see coaching and judgment.

    2. Offensive gameplan. Noyer gets a chunk of the blame, but what’s our identity on offense? It was obvious the last few years what it was. Lean heavily on Jermar and AP on early downs, open up the short passing game from there. 38 passing attempts compared to 25 rushing attempts. We tried multiple play action looks early in the game but it didn’t make sense considering we didn’t have anything going on the ground. 3rd down throwing short of the sticks continues to poison this offense. Offensive line just overall had a terrible game.

    3. Defense. The one bright spot. Yet, still frustrating. They get a little bit of a pass because they kept getting put in extremely difficult positions by their head coach. Tackling is still an issue. Multiple chances at TFLs and we’re diving at ankles or reaching out arms. Not much you can do when your offense is struggling, but forcing a turnover could have been a big boost for their offense. Pass pressure was good early but disappeared. It’s frightening how many 3rd and longs we continue to give up. Especially when a pass is thrown underneath and RAC yards get them the 1st.

    4. Decision making/gambles. Here’s the thing about a gamble: When it works, it’s a genius and memorable play. When it doesn’t, it’s a bad decision or reckless. One of my favorite gambles and trick plays of all time was @ Utah in 2013 when Riley dialed up a flea flicker on 4th and inches on our own 45 with a 3 point lead in the 4th quarter. But the reason I love that play and it’s so memorable was because it worked. There’s a time and place for gambles and trick plays. That play was also a pass from Mannion to Cooks, two all time Beaver greats. Not from Chance Nolan to Tyjon Lindsey. The decision to go for it on that 4th time considering the time and situation was a gamble. The play call was reckless. I would rather be aggressive than conservative, but not at the expense of the game. We are not talented enough to try and out smart simple football IQ. Running the lowest success rate play on 4th and 1 is unacceptable and irresponsible. Run it up the middle. If they stop you, whatever. You did the right thing. Or just punt the ball. Your defense is playing great and a Purdue touchdown basically puts the game away, trust the side of the ball that’s been playing the best and punt the ball away.

I like Smith, I appreciate his effort to try and get this program turned around. But this is another blown game as a direct result of coaching malpractice. Could say a lot more but this team doesn’t deserve any more of my time lamenting over their failures. So hard to continue to support this program. So many sports at Oregon State have seen success in recency history. Why can’t we get it done in football? With every season and every brutal loss, running Mike Riley out of town continues to look worse and worse.

This team will finish 5-7 at the best. More likely 3-9. Will be interested to see what will happen to this staff if that happens.

      • 1
        2

He was getting major heat from the fan base and internally (deservedly so), which is the only reason why he entertained Nebraska’s overtures in the first place. I think him getting “run out of town” is not that offbase. I think it was very close to the “mutual decision” stage of him stepping down at OSU (i.e. I think OSU would have afforded him the respect of not outright firing him).

        • The rumor was that BDC asked for some staff changes and Smilin’ Mike took offense. The irony ended up being that he fired Banker at Nebraska. I guess if enough money is involved people will do anything!

    • 8
      4

Mike wasn’t run out of town. He bolted at the first sign of pressure from within the athletic department. The Texas bowl loss was the catalyst.
      Good post otherwise.

    • 1
      2

You had me until the Riley thing. You can’t possibly think Riley would be winning us more games at this point in his career. We may not be any better as far as wins, but we surely aren’t worse.

    • 1
      1

Agree with most of your post. Not sure if defense is a bright spot though. Looks better than 5 years ago but still bad and imo will still be one of the bottom 2 defenses in the PAC again. I’m a broken record but Tibs and his schemes aren’t working.

      • 2.7 YPC for Purdue, even with Hodgins out. I don’t think we want to go back to the days of giving up 7 yards a carry.

Purdue had a good game plan, and took advantage of the mismatches with Bell and their receiving backs.

        • 2
          1

It’s totally plausible to be better than those years of being the worst defense in the country and still be one of the worst defenses in the PAC. That’s a moral victory though and we’re past the moral victory stage this far into the new regime and we shouldn’t be content with “we’re last in the PAC but at least not the worst in the country anymore”. Tibs got out coached and made zero adjustments to cover the TE (who was limping yet still was all by himself on their last TD) in the 2nd half. He’s better suited to be a position coach than the d coordinator.

      • It’s a bright spot that they kept us in the game. Like I said, certain areas need a lot of improvement but the run defense especially was noticeable better than we’ve seen in the past.

    • 2
      1

Yep anyone complaining pac12 doesn’t get into the playoffs, is absolutely dillusional. UCLA looked good, but this isn’t LSU 2 years ago. LSU is likely not a bowl team this year.

      Pac12 is bad at football.

  44. 3

Tonight should be a look in the mirror kind of self evaluation for JS regarding his coaching perspectives and gambling problems. I think he may be chasing that CHris Petersen reputation from their time in BOise St, trick plays always seemed to work, timing of those calls always had a deflating effect on opponents, Petersen recieved all kinds of accolades and became a national face for that program for a decade. In some way, I wonder if this is JS’s hope to duplicate for OSU and his own sake.

    After the weekend results:
UW is in trouble and exposed
Stanford is limited and no qb
    Cal is still Cal
Oregon is all hype and can be beaten
WSU yet to be seen, but unlikely to rise to prominence this year
OSU falls flat on the opener but may still have a shot at the North if JS can cease from his 4th quarter madness

UCLA may be the class of the conference
ASU is dealing with possible sanctions
USC has talent but Helton will limit them as well
UA is going to be outmatched much of the season
Utah has their qb and may run control lead the conference in offense and defense
Colorado will be steady like Cal

SO I see a 3 team race in the South between UCLA, Utah, and USC
In the North, Beavs may still have a shot to win 6 or 7, but I hope they can win all games against the teams form the north and probably get destroyed by the teams from the south at this point.

  45. Wazzu isn’t really lighting up so far either. Finally took the lead against Utah St. 6-5 at the half. The Beavs will have some opportunities in league play if they play a little better than today.

    • 2
      2

Our offense played like absolute shit and still almost won. I see that as a big upside for the rest of the season. We were never going undefeated or going to the playoffs so one loss isn’t the end of the season unless we don’t learn anything from it. Honestly the north looks wide open.

      • 1
        1

As long as Saban is coaching at Bama, it’s all just sort of effing around anyway for all the other teams as far as playoffs/New Year’s Bowl Games.

      • Agreed. The problem with the defense was they were on the field 9 minutes longer than the offense. I didn’t make a prediction before the game, but I had my doubts about the offense holding up to Karlaftis on one hand and the defense with Bell on the other. Maybe the Beavs played the correct qb in the second half, or did the play calling adjustments help him out? I’m not too down on the 4&2 incompletion either. The jackhammer got stuffed a few drives before that; it’s on the qb to find the open man or run the keeper…To say nothing of boneheaded veteran mistakes. I’m also enjoying not being the most embarrassing pac12 loss today.

  46. I recently posted that I thought threw a better ball than Gebbia not having seen Noyer play. It’s abundantly clear than Nolan is the clear starter until Gebbia returns. I don’t know how and the heck Noyer earned the starting job over Nolan. Although Beavers lost, they showed some potential with Nolan at QB. I thought the defense played well enough to win but those 4th down calls were just horrible. Beavers still have a shot to win some hamesvand have a decent season as Stanford sucks, ducks certainly don’t look like world beaters and aside from UCLA, the rest of the conference doesn’t appear to be great. One game doesn’take a season so let’s see how they rebound against Hawaii and if they don’t beat Hawaii by 21 or so, then I’ll be concerned. Purdue is a pretty decent team to losing on the road wasn’t a huge surprise althouogh I had beavers winning 28-23.

  47. Bad news: Beavs look like a 5-7 team. Good news: The rest of the Pac-12 North doesn’t look great, and they may be able to cobble together six wins and go to a bowl game. Whatever you do today: Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame. A loss to FSU will make wins by USC and/or Stanford over the Domers meaningless

  48. Glad I missed this one. It sounds like a continuation of fall camp performance (with a little less optimism about the D).

I’m not seeing many comments about the OL, but it must have been pretty bad looking at our running stat line. QB situation is worse than expected.

Who were our best players on offense and defense?

    • Defense: Roberts and Speights had great games. Skelton and Sio both looked good. Grant and Wright were very solid.

Offense: Lowe looked good. Nolan looked much improved. Bradford, Lindsay and Beason all looked like weapons.

I’ll have to rewatch but I think Noyer was dropping back too far making the angles really bad in pass pro. Oline looked way better with Nolan who was definitely stepping into a pocket and the DE’s started over running the pocket.

  49. A bit of extra analysis on the defense and if it is improving or working.

In a good 3-4 the line essentially creates lanes for the ILB to attack, EDGE are on containment and pass rush duty and the secondary mostly sits back. The tackle breakdown should be something like 60% LB, 15% DL, 25% Secondary. If the DL is getting significant pressure then the Secondary number drops (less completions). If nothing else you would like 80%+ of the other teams completions to be tackled by the secondary. This is a bit rough because I didn’t track where all the secondary tackles occurred but I think it shows that the defense is really improving in the scheme and might be a significant help to this team if the offense actually plays some. This also is done with TOT which includes assists.

    Purdue (29 Completions) –
    ILB: 27 Tackles (41%)
    EDGE: 10 Tackles (15%)
Secondary: 21 Tackles (32% total, 72% of completions)
    Line: 8 tackles (12%)

IMO if the offense had been playing as they did with Nolan the defense would have gotten much more rest and the D-Line and EDGE would have gotten to the qb more and they would have had fewer completions. The defense was all over Plummer for the first 4 series of the game before Stover got ejected and they got gased. The defense is finally working as it is designed schematically.

  50. 1
    1

Despite all the other losses in the PAC yesterday, only 2 defenses gave up more than 400 yds…Beavs and WSU. Not sure why adjustments weren’t made to cover the TE…clearly out coached by Purdue. Could’ve had 2 more TDs but they dropped 2 passes in the end zone if I recall correctly. Think there were 3 other teams with 1 or less turnovers created in the PAC. I do think players were making quicker decisions than years past and there were a few players who stood out for sure but it still seemed like the same issues still persist. Tackling, 3rd and long, lack of consistent pressure, etc. Obviously a long way to go yet but a little concerning that these are all still problem areas. Offense definitely didn’t help the defense and that can be taken into consideration, however, good defenses create pressure and opportunities to help themselves and we unfortunately weren’t able to do that yesterday. Will be interesting to see which North division teams make improvements the rest of the year.

    • I think how the yards were gained should be looked at. We gave up 401 yards which is about 50 yards less than the 2020 and 2019 average. Plummer was a good QB, very accurate and good decision maker. I think the TEs were free because we were trying to contain Bell.

So yeah 313 yards through the air isn’t great but that’s gonna happen when a team can’t rush. That was the first game we held a P5 opponent under 100 yards rushing since WSU in 2019 butttt they had 600 yards passing.

Considering it was the first game of the season and the offense sucked I’m pleased with the defense. Tackling will get better, pressure will improve when they aren’t gassed and we I have a feeling Plummer will be one of the better quarterbacks we face this year.
