Home Football Bowl Week and General

Bowl Week and General

140

You may be getting busy with Christmas activities but there are still lots of Beav related things to discuss and angrybeavs is the place to do it.

-NiceB should be busy providing tips as the early signing day approaches, transfer portal news as well.
-We should begin to get reports on the week of practice, maybe even a hint as to when the team will appear on The Jimmy K show.
-Smith still needs to name a DC, maybe this waits till after the Bowl?
-Anyone have strong feelings about the betting line for any of the Bowl games? Beavs are the only PAC12 team favored in their game. Is Utah gonna fool Vegas and whip Ohio State?
-Anyone heard when the quacks will name an OC? When they’ll start a Mens Soccer team?

Have at it!

  1. “…When you’re prepping for another opponent, guys grow and learn so much from that.” Says Brian Lindgren who, along with Coach M, saw good energy from the team in practices Saturday and Sunday.
Coach M: “There was a lot of fun. The whole team was bouncing around,” he said. “Guys are happy to be out there and happy to be doing a game plan. It’s really cool.”

I hope Kimmel gets Colleto’s quote about “hearing angels sing” etc. on his 47 yard TD run…that was so anti-cliche…he’s a mechanical engineering major, I think Kimmel would love it.

Wonder if Kimmel will pick a team, or stay neutral.

  2. Looks like hole is making a run at FSU’s Dillingham for OC. His offense has looked like shit at FSU but slick Willie left that place in shambles. His previous stops have put up some numbers.

I keep thinking eventually someone will give the dude from Pitt a chance to run his GoGo offense on the big stage.

Daschel article makes it sound like Lindgren leaving is very much a possibility:

“I’d love to be back here next year, but you never know,” Lindgren said Sunday. “We’ll see what opportunities there are in the next month. My family and I really like it here.”

Lindgren said the logical next step is head coach of a college program or NFL quarterbacks coach. Both require patience, particularly the former.

“I’m in a pretty good situation right now, and I’m trying to be fairly selective and make sure. A lot of times you get one pop at it, and you want to make sure it’s the right opportunity,” Lindgren said.

    • JS needs him for one more season to get us to the next level. Some issues with play calling, but he ran an interesting and creative offense this year.

    • It will be good for the program for Lindgren to leave for a hc job in a year or two. It prevents the offense from getting stale and predictable. Always good when guys leave for higher jobs, makes the position desirable.

Curious he wasn’t in the running for his alma mater Idaho. But maybe he wants a fbs job.

Then JS can look to guys who are innovators at lower levels or at a g5 school. He needs to expand his coaching tree going forward.

      • Idaho’s a death trap job. They aren’t anywhere close to the top of the pecking order in FCS and don’t have the facilities or location draw some of the other schools have.

DC candidate JS should look at: Vince Kehres.

Former Mt. Union HC and current Toledo DC (2 year tenure). Took Toledo defense from bottom to the top of the conference immediately. Has experience winning national championships at the DIII level.

  5. So we are expecting Oliver to flip to somewhere else? Where did this come from? That kid is probably the best best in the class dang it. Not a lot of fan fare with him but he’s legit. Hope he stays

    • Talent wise it would have been a good add but there were some questions with him. He left Louisville before the season started as true frosh. That’s very odd.

          • From Greg Biggins RE: Sam Mason:
“He’s a physical player who has a nice edge in his game. He runs well enough to play corner but has the range, instincts and toughness to play safety. As he continues to fill out over the coming years, safety might actually be his meal ticket and the position where he has the most long term upside but it sounds like he might start out at corner.”

    • A lot of good QBs in the portal. Hope at least a few come into the pac12 to make the conference better. Crazy how many of the programs in the east have California QBs.

      • That’s pretty crazy, Slovis was so good the year before this one. I guess the Dart kid looked like he took over the position. He’d be nice to add and push Nolan for starting job next season.

          • Slovis has regressed each year. Not sure how much is him or coaching. But the selling point would be playing in a pro system vs air raid where he was before.

Certainly talented and fits more of what the coaches look for in a QB.

          • I think injuries have been part of that, part of it has been his natural limitations. His arm strength is not fantastic and he seems to try to force some throws that he doesn’t have the zip for.

Per PFF: he was the most accurate passer in the conference (especially on deep balls), but also had an above average number of “turnover worthy plays,” and makes bad decisions under pressure.

He does seem to fit the profile of what JS and BL are looking for.

  6. Just my thoughts on how the last couple of days will go before the 1st signing day.

Currently we have 16 verbal commits:
    Sam Mason-DB
    Noble Thomas Jr.-DB
    Ryan Cooper-DB
    Nathan Elu-OL
    M. Malaki-Donaldson-DE
    Kord Shaw-LB
    Takari Hickle-DE
    Jack Velling-TE
    Quincy Wright-DT
    Luka Vincic-OL
    Jacob Strand-OL
    Carlos Mack-DB
    Dylan Lopez-OL
    Travis Throckmorton-QB
    Damien Martinez RB
    Melvin Jordan LB

I think at best, we add 2 more(Ott, Olsen) but I could see Olsen waiting till the late signing period, especially with UW/WSU/Oregon having so much uncertainty in their classes.
Beavs have a solid class but still not large numbers wise. But I think they’re better off taking a low number and continuing to work the portal for more immediate talent upgrades.

It’s still possible they could add bodies in the late period if good options present themselves, but with so many big Pac12 schools trying to round out their classes after coaching changes, our options will be limited.

Of course this will probably now play out completely differently and we could sign 8 more 5* players.
But jist being realistic, I dont see Otton, Iuli or Ioane as very realistic optiona for OSU.

    • Those last 3 guys feel more like click-baity stories the Nemec’s amd Blitzes of the world put out there to get you excited.
      “4* Potential Flip!! Click Here!!”

      Hope I’m wrong

      • Should be an interesting signing day. Last year wasn’t Jason White a signing day “decision”? He was a really nice last minute flip, the thing is I don’t think anyone had it on the radar and it was just a signed paper and boom he’s a Beav. I sort of like that, and hope there is another like him, no hoopla with it just here is my signed paper and get to work.

          • One I was wondering about was the corner or receiver from Lake Oswego (maybe Lakeridge) Lowe maybe?. Beavs were on him for a long time, with Colorado and oregon had offered a couple weeks back.

I guess its not really suprising to see him not listed, did the Beavs just get Mason and Noble Thomas to fill those roles, or did the kid not seem interested? Just weird he sat on p5 offers for so long and doesn’t seem to have much fan fare with the Oregon offer etc..

          • I didnt get the impression he really liked OSU all that much. At first, because it was his first Pac12 offer it seemed more likely, but then he kept finding more and more offers and OSU felt like an afterthought.
And our last 3 commits have been DBs, so i think we’re full now.

I’m trying to learn what number of spots we actually have left to fill before signing day. Squishy number with the potential NFL guys who havent announced if theyre staying or going

          • The crazy thing is, it doesn’t feel like we really need anything else in this class. Another DT would be nice (especially if we’re sticking with the 3-4), but there are no glaring holes.

          • I think’s the opposite of a UW lock at this point. He decommitted yesterday. And was at Minnesota this past weekend. He’ll also be a February signing period guy, so a ways to go with him.

      • Brandon Huffman must read AB.
        Tweeted a few minutes ago:
“Puyallup (Wash.) offensive lineman Dave Iuli, a commit to Oregon, will wait until February to sign after coaching changes have impacted his decision”

    • Having said this, I tried to get a gauge for how much space we actually have left to add players in this class. The general though has been small class and not much room, but the answer I got, while vague, made it sound like we still have “a lot of space left” and that we’re always leaving room to add more.

So I can’t give you an exact number(company secret) but it sounds like the whole “small class” thing isn’t a very accurate narrative.

      So rosterbate away

      • Leave spots for transfers or guys that don’t go to their top choices. It’s worked well to get transfers who are in need of a place that has room. I’d rather not take a low 3 star and wait.

Not many glaring holes but plenty of opportunities to upgrade positions. Portal seems good for that.

Off topic: will we one day hear a coach thank his school for all the support blah blah blah and then enter the portal???

      • Big question is if the OL guys eligible to come back actually come back. That was the heart of the team. It would be awesome to see the Beav’s become a West Coast version of Wisconsin in terms of OL play. We have the position coach to pull that off.

    • Think I would’ve preferred Oliver over Cooper just based purely off the offer sheet. Nice list for Oliver and Cooper seems to have not really had much of anything outside of 1 decent JC year. But I’m no expert.

  7. Baseball schedule is out. Not bad. Keeping it strictly west coast.

Solid non conf. Gonzaga, UC Irvine, Long Beach st.

Hate the conference tourney at the end. It’s just a waste of time. Solid teams tank the tourney by pitching their weekday guys. But opportunity to steal bids if on the bubble.

  8. Yes and I think of a handful of times the committee has trimmed better teams (many of them PAC teams) from the NCAA tournament, because some mid-major caught everyone else doing just that — resting players, giving backups starts, not taking the tournament seriously — conference tournaments are a joke, just like conference championship games in football. “Hey the SEC and ACC get their customary 10 bids each, Creighton, Bucknell, Sacred Heart and Grambling State all won their respective tournaments with a losing regular season record! What the fuck do we do now….let’s go cut some teams that will simultaneously give our own conference’s teams a bit of advantage….ooooh, let’s trim the PAC down a team or two…the PAC doesn’t complain and most will go along with it since the SEC wins every other year (cards are stacked in favor) and the all powerful ACC with one championship in sixty years continues its tournament pedigree….all in favor…the “I’s” have it….the tournament is set, nothing to see here, move along”

  9. Apparently the band is busing and leave Wednesday…kid thinks the football team has to bus too, that sounds lame.

Pep rally at sofi on Friday maybe Kimmel shows up to that, if so players probably on Friday would be a guess.

      • LOL, right?! Band nerd scuttlebutt is very 3rd party They were hoping to fly , with costs to be covered by donors and/or fundraising, something fell through with travel booker.

But straight from someone in ad today, team flies Tuesday, staying in Torrance, location not to be disclosed here to avoid fire alarm drills.

    • Smith has said the team leaves Tuesday, no mention of bus vs plane. Really lame and hard to believe that the team wouldn’t fly.
Daschel has tweeted that the team will be at the Jimmy Kimmel Live show on Thursday.

  10. Out of the blue, but whatever happened to that recruit who was rated the #1 Fullback in the nation? Is he on the roster? I remember some buzz at the time with Smith saying they will have some plays designed for the fullback. Seems like Colletto has stolen that thunder.

    • Logan Horton is still on the roster. My guess is the clearest path for him is to take over those I-formation plays from Jack whenever he leaves.

    • I think he needed to bulk up. According to reports, he was/is a real student of the game, so I hope he starts getting reps next year (you know, in blowout victories).

  11. Just realized the 247 score for class rankings is in a Gaussian fit. Looks like to be 3rd in the conference we would need Ott or another 4 star guy. Doesn’t really matter but it’s neat.

  12. After watching this whole coaching debacle for the Yucks over the last few days I’m convinced there’s not enough mental health experts to help that fan base. Saw some dude call for being top 4 or 8 next year. Lol.

  13. Read an article about Lanning’s intro presser…a duck fan commented welcoming coach LANE to the program. Hell, some duck fans don’t even know the coach’s name. No wonder MC bolted for Miami….fans booing at autzen and can’t even get the new coach’s name right…what a bunch of Dbag fans.

    • Just read that Joey 5 Picks and 10 other former players wrote Mullens a private letter asking him to consider hiring a coach who has some Oregon history and tradition, basically lobbying for Wilcox it seems. They recognize that hole has basically sold out to hiring whatever snake oil salesman they think will get them a “natty”, with no regard to continuity or acknowledgement of the 30 years the former staffs and players put in to get the program to that point.

Some cock in the the athletic department leaked it to Canzano, who immediately wrote an “article” about it on the day they hired their new coach.

      Fireworks ensued.

      • It’s interesting because Canzano was obviously wrong when he was making a big deal about the Lanning deal not being done yet. Looks like the “gang of 14” fed him their plea letter for Wilcox and Canzano assumed it would have some sway with Mullen which apparently it did not.

        • Maybe Mullens actually was swayed.
Wilner says Canzano reported that Wilcox turned down the offer from Mullens.

He (Wilner) says, “Why would Wilcox reject a chance to lead his alma mater? Perhaps he was leery of the fate that befell former coach Mark Helfrich, who was tarred and feathered just two years after taking the Ducks to the national championship. Perhaps his plans for building a coaching staff wouldn’t suit Oregon’s preferences. Perhaps Wilcox wasn’t sure his recruiting style and philosophy, which is markedly different from Cristobal’s, would be well received. This is mere speculation, of course. Most likely, we’ll never know.”

        • Canzano on the radio today was pretty convincing when he said he asked the oregon PR people if the Lanning hire was true Friday, and they were adamant the hiring wasnt done and the reports were untrue. I dont blame JC there, he was reporting what the school told him directly.

      • Apparently some of the letter writers joined a Twitter Space thing (if thats what it’s called) to share their feelings with the fans there. Gotta give some fans second thoughts about the direction being taken.

Didn’t see it mentioned, JS says Avery Roberts is heading for the NFL.

“Smith said none of the Beavers plan to opt out for the bowl. Linebacker Avery Roberts had surgery last week, as he’s planning to leave OSU with one year of eligibility remaining to prep for the NFL draft. … Other than Roberts, Smith said no one with eligibility remaining has officially told him they’re leaving for the draft. “A few guys definitely considering it … they’re doing a good job of finishing this year, getting the information they need and then they’ll make a decision,” Smith said.”

I’m trying to talk the Belligerent Beavs guys into hosting a signin day “spaces” event on Wednesday. They were already planning to have a show that night, but might as well make it an event, since they dont have a team signing day dinner going on

  16. PHIL STEELE REPORT

Neither team was expected to get to a bowl this year and both have been pleasant surprises. Utah St had 3 straight 4Q comeback wins to open the year. After a pair of losses they went 7-1 down the stretch and beat San Diego St in the MW title game 46-13. SDSt was missing 15 players who were mostly backups but were without their top 3 TE’s in a TE driven offense. Blake Anderson brought his offense and QB Logan Bonner over from Ark St and they put up 451 ypg which is 64 ypg above opp averages. The D allowed foes 20 ypg above opponent averages and they allowed 244 ypg rush and 5.8 ypc in their 3 losses. Oregon St is a run based team led by BJ Baylor (1259, 6.0) and Deshaun Fenwick (450, 5.8) with Chance Nolan still throwing for 2424 (64%, 19-9). The offense put 55 ypg above opp avg but the defense allowed 28 ypg above. Oregon St went 7-5 but took on the much tougher schedule (#47 vs #76). They beat USC, Washington, Ariz St and Rose Bowl bound Utah but did lose 3 times as a road favorite. The Beavers Offensive line is one of the finalists for the coveted Joe Moore Award. I like OSU to win the game but my checklist does only have them by 4. This one should be a shootout.
