A Beav win would be the capper on a gorgeous day…..:

Ducks get their asses handed to them. Followed by a nice motorcycle ride. Now time to throw some rib eyes on the BBQ.

Nice. Great time of year. Was out on my (pedal) bike as well…did 40 miles. I think I’m mostly over Covid. My dinner was not as glamorous. Got home and didn’t want to make food, so I ordered Jersey Mike’s for the first time ever today on the recommendation of a friend, and boy was that disappointing. Slimy old lettuce and meat with no flavor. Can’t wait to do it all again tomorrow. There’s nothing like cycling in the Fall/Late summer.

Gooooooo Beavs. Put a bow on this day.

I was rolling my eyes BEFORE Utah went for that 4th down.

I’m not even a fan of conservative play calling, but these coaches have become so reckless they make me seem conservative.

  3. BTW. I’ve been able to find a lot of today’s games on YouTube. I’m not sure if the Beavs will show up there, but if they do, it’s nice because you can stream it on the big screen via Roku TVs with the YT app.

Type in “College football live” and it should pull up whatever is streaming on YouTube at that moment.

  4. Line up like your going for it and try to draw them offside if can’t let chamce drop back for a quick pooch punt. Don’t go for it right after you dropped a touchdown and lost momentum.

  5. One of my jeys to the game was take care of the ball and Fenwick fucks up. No excuse for that as a senior and being given the nod.

  6. Musgrave, Grant, Wright, and Harrison making plays is a good sign. Good bounce back from his terrible drop. Nolan having all day to pass.

  7. Nolans gotten stronger. He use to float balls like those last 2. They’re Lazer beams now. Hope it holds up for the duration of the season.

    • guys on the Boise post game call-in show said that since the first two guys didn’t play well, it might be time for Vidlak who, they said, throws the best ball among the 3 of them.

  8. Nolan looks really sharp. Defense is frenzied. And this is pretty much the only decent game on right now. Hopefully a few more eyeballs than normal After Dark.

    • sitting in the stands I said this my self “uh-oh, a first time QB–Beav kryptonite”. You cold see early on however that he could run but was perhaps even less accurate than Bachmeir

  9. I am not liking all these passes. There will be more turnovers the more you throw and the more drops our receivers make like this one.

    • That was one of the things I said earlier this week. If I don’t have to yell at my TV to RUN THE BALL!!! it will be because the game is in our control.

  10. If this keeps up I’d like to see Smith keep running it up. Lots of game to go but Smith too nice. Gets 3 score lead then stops. We need to step on a neck. Get the points. Get the swagger going. Tough first half of the season and some confidence and a dominating win would go a long way.

    • Run it up to where you know they can’t catch up and put in backups in the middle to end of the 3rd quarter like Georgia did to Oregon today. Grant it, we didn’t have 5 TD’s on 5 consecutive possessions.

    • He hit 18 straight field goals at that range stemming from last season. That was a surprise miss and it didn’t miss by much.
If there was an award for kicking a missed field goal by getting it as close to the upright as possible, Boise State kicker would be the champion.

  11. Outsiders will be talking about Nolan. I am going to be talking about this defense if they keep it up. Great penetration, fast sideline to sideline. Making open field tackles. Playing disciplined.

  12. Man, every time we have turned the ball over our defense responds. I feel like it’s our game to lose. Put the ball on the ground and let’s chew some clock. Can’t be giving them short fields like that.

  13. It’s week one… gotta expect some struggles with penalties and other things. That being said, damnit Musgrave! If you weren’t having such an awesome game I would be pissed at you!

    • Earlier someone mentioned that Colletto looked slow chasing a bronco; here he looks fast enough but good thing he didn’t need another 20 yds.

  14. 3
    1

The full back Colletto formation earlier in the game set this play up. Great call at that point in time. Beavers bring back the fullback position? Love it!!

  15. Who was that WR that blocked on the inside and sprung him? Sweet!

Used Colletto as a decoy on that series on the quick throw out to Harrison, then he goes house a few plays later! Fucking sweet!

    Colletto: Andersen’s recruit. Ha!

    • Right in line with the Tennessee lineman signing a kids shoe after they scored a TD. Lol the kids had a pen and their shoe for players to sign lol

      • Nolan’s play marred by TOs…

        OLine unimpressive in run game…

        Too many penalties, sloppy play.

First game, hope they clean it up next week.

          • Throwing it away was my biggest concern going into the season next to the deep ball. He fixed the deep ball, now he needs to fix throwing it away and having better ball control when running. The interception he threw was slightly behind the receiver, but flipping the ball into the air was what caused that interception. Again, all fixable things.

  16. This game reminds me of the lunch lady from Billy Madison “I made ‘em extra sloppy for yous”. More positives than negatives, good win but lots to work on

  17. 3
    1

This probably should have been a bigger point win but I’ll take the win. What can I say, I’m a golfer and a Beaver fan… neither are ever happy.

  18. The good: The win, the points, point differential, D with lots of negative yardage plays for 2.5 quarters…Nolan hitting intermediate to deep passes, Musgrave, D getting TOs, open field tackling. Colletto: fumble recovery, 41 yd TD run…another streak ends: finally win a season opener.

The bad: Penalties, TOs, OLine play underwhelming in run game, poor third down conversion rate.

    • Don’t forget dropped passes. Specifically that opening possession wide open on the money pass that Harrison dropped(I like Harrison a lot but that was rough)

    • 1
      1

I give poor third down percentage because the penalties equaled punts or turnovers on offense. Defensive penalties is what you get when your more aggressive. Think back to the Erickson defenses. They were penalized a lot for PI and late hits. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work on positioning better to make a play and keep your hands of the WR.

With that said, more holding penalties than false starts(were there any?) Holding is fixable with learning hand placements and when to release from your block.

    • Positives:

      A watchable, entertaining product
QB rollout, hitting a receiver on the opposite side line (this resulted ~2 big plays)
      Pass protection

      To Improve:

      Ball security/awareness!
Offensive play calls in red zone
Dying less often when we blitz
      Fewer 3rd & Long

  19. A win is a win when a program is trying to build upwards, so I’m not going to dwell on the sloppiness, but damn it must be baked into the Beav’s DNA no the coaching staff that they can’t stop mobile freshmen quarterbacks with little to no experience!

    • Its like they sleep on them. He’s a redshirt, former track athlete. But they did pick him, and that Austin pick was on a real “rookie” throw.

A few big runs and the scoreboard looked much different.

Also, with that many TOs, the Beavs should have had more points if they could have run blocked better and converted more third downs. Boise’s D played the run pretty well actually. But for Colleto, no big runs. Yet.

Had company this evening so had to watch off the DVR. Only took about an hour and a half…..

Nice to finally win the season opener. Glad I was wrong.

Honestly, didn’t think Boise was that impressive. Their run may be over.

D got what? 5 turnovers? They get the game ball tonight.

Nolan had a few bad plays. One of the Beavs receivers has hands of stone. Harrison?

The bad…..none of the stable of RB’s did anything to impress me. Waaaaaay too many penalties.

The awful….Beth Mowins. Good god. I had to turn the TV on mute after the first drive. Nails on a chalkboard.

Good win Beavs. Better effort will be needed to get that elusive win in Fresno next Saturday.

Forgot about Colletto. Sealed the game with that TD run on 4th down. Also had a fumble recovery.

Game ball also goes to the Milf hammer.

  21. 2
    7

Boise looked like a shadow of their former selves, but decent win altogether. Nolan looked great and awful, don’t think he learned anything from last year regarding ball control.
No significant injuries and defense looks serviceable. Fresno State will be a tough game on the road, Beavs need to cleanup turnovers to keep it close.

  22. 3
    2

Pros: Musgrave, DBs (man coverage), Nolan deep pass accuracy, forcing turnovers, great coaching on when to punt and when to take the field goal, hung in tough through some adversity in the 3rd, open field tackling
Cons: Penalties, Nolan careless with ball randomly, some key dropped passes (missed touchdown and tipped INT, a 10 point swing between the two plays), running game was not effective (albeit a good defensive front who was daring us to throw all night, which was why the deep balls were open), Hayes remains a wild card, mobile QBs remain a thorn in the side

A nice win. It might end up being a good thing we didn’t straight up rout them. Prevents our heads from getting too big over one win and now everyone has a LOT to look at and improve on. Next week is a whole new animal. Won’t be as good of a defense but a much different pace on offense. Fresno will throw it around sideline to sideline. I would say that performance today overall might not be enough for a win in Fresno. They won’t turn it over 5 times.

      2

Did you not see the CB’s stop the WR screens in the flats? This defense is so much better at open field tackles and recognizing the sideline passes. Offense worries me way more than defense does.

  23. 4
    1

Good to see Musgrave, Nolan, Grant, Wright, Austin Breakout . Harrison was hella steamy. Ryan Cooper looks like a surprise player.

  24. Martinez is going to be really good once he irons out some wrinkles and gets more confident. Fenwick is really good at getting 4-5 yards every carry, but always seems to get the last few by falling forward.

From what I saw tonight, Nolan is going to have to carry this offense. He clearly has the ability.

Lindgren is the man. Some of the stuff he draws up is just brilliant.

Credit to Bray’s defense. It was kind of hard to gauge them because BSU kept giving us the ball, but we took what they gave us and stopped just about everything except the unplanned for QB runs.

  25. According to PFF, Gray and Brewer were the weak links on the OL. That’s actually kind of reassuring because they were two of the best last year. Hopefully it’s a one off.

Nolan currently a top 20 QB nationally and scored better than Stetson Bennett for week 1.

Martinez the top ranked OSU RB.

  26. Passed the first test. It definitely isn’t the same Boise so a loss would have been catastrophic. The more I think about it the USC game will be the defining game of the season. Pull off a win there to go 4-0 and it will lead in to an epic matchup at Utah. Would be the most nationally relevant non-CW game I can remember. We’d also be playing with house money and a loss wouldn’t really hurt us as long as the game is competitive. Then the schedule opens up after that. On the other hand, a home loss to USC and another at Utah the following week to go 3-2……that feels pretty meh to me and would likely lead to 8-4, 7-5 or even the dreaded 6-6. Really need to beat USC to put us on the right path.

    • Starting 3-0 would set up a ranked vs ranked matchup with USC that would be bigger than a game against Utah. USC gets more hype and could get Gameday that week. Arkansas/A&M and Clemson/Wake would be the only competition.

  27. I’m not ready to jump on the 9 win train but now I can see there’s a good chance at making a bowl game this season. So many amazing plays last night on both offense and defense! I thought the defense got good penetration and caused a lot of chaos. Obviously, the penalties and turnovers need to be cleaned up. Might have been the GREATEST start to a season in Beaver history. Nothing better than a blowout win AND seeing the ducks get boat raced!!! GO BEAVS go pound the bulldogs!

Also, boise’s new qb reminds me of Vince Young. That kid’s a beast in the making..maybe we can get him in the transfer portal next year : )

    • He’s a great athlete, but I’m not convinced he’ll become a good passer. He has weird mechanics and missed some throws really badly.

That’s the kind of guy you build your offense around, though. Perfect run-heavy spread option QB. He won’t finish his career in Boise.

      • Check out his offers and it’s obvious most big programs wanted him to change positions. His best offers were SDSU, Marshall and Wyoming.

  29. 2

The big problem last night was the loss of focus. We’re not good enough to lose focus for large chunks of games. That has been a problem in the past, and it still looks to be a problem.

  30. Waking up the day after I’ll share a couple thoughts on last nights game:
    1) worst and best moments – worst was Nolan throwing int while throwing it away. Best – was Nolan slapping himself in the head on the sideline after that play. Reminded me of Tommy Boy.
    2) worst and best moment #2 – worst was the anxiety just before the game because Beaver football game one was starting. Best was going to bed knowing the Beavs won their first game and just maybe I can be excited for Beaver football this year instead of just anxious.
    3) most excited about – Nolan… short and long balls were good with good spirals and the boy can run if needed. Plus he went through his progressions. The QB was my biggest concern for this year. Not so much now. RB play has replaced that for now.

I don’t care about testing or guidelines or any other attempt to make this political – just the practicality that when you’re in a locker room yelling and huffing and wooting you’re going to get Covid in every other players’ face, and then you won’t be able to field a team, and then you will have to forfeit. It’s stupid to be huffing in one another’s face like in that video.

I got Covid walking around Costco with a mask on. These dudes will get it and spread it around the team. I am 100% sure this will happen. Irresponsible by the coaches.

        • 8
          1

My perspective is completely different on the video. For me, it gives me hope that after years of being told not to congregate, not to show your face in public, not to hug, not to be human; that life goes on! To take these things away from us, is to take a piece of our humanity away. We can never take for granted going to stadiums full of people, going out to restaurants, traveling, church, school, etc..

        • Sorry Angry, wasn’t trying to make this political either. Just trying to point out that the universities and NCAA are most likely all following CDC protocols that essentially all are saying that mass testing no longer needs to happen and being exposed to the virus doesn’t warrant a test either

So basically what you are going to see are those players only testing if they are symptomatic and even then they may not even test to avoid having to sit out. We are definitely not going to see whole teams being wiped out due to Covid like we saw last year.

Sorry again was not trying to make it political just wanted to share my thoughts on university policy when it comes to following Covid guidelines.

          • I think Angry’s point is it doesn’t matter if you test or not, it doesn’t prevent you from getting Covid, and Covid makes some people pretty ill for prolonged periods of time. So if a bunch of kids on the team are ill at the same time, they aren’t going to be real effective on the field.

          • I just want to know what is in place to ensure we can field a complete and competitive team. That is on Smith to put some kind of protocol in place since it’s his team. And what I saw in the video it looked like nothing like that is in place.

          • I wouldn’t worry too much about Covid at this point. The current variant is much weaker and I’d guess a lot of the team probably got BA.4 or 5 in recent months.

  31. Enjoyed the double pass call. Wasn’t desperate, was well executed, and should give other team something to think about when Dunmore (at least) is in the game. Next time Dunmore likely keeps it or throws it somewhere else.

  32. 8
    2

Fresno will be a tougher game than this one. Biggest concern for that game is these guys think they’re better than they are…they showed that in the BSU game by taking off 3/4 of the game once they saw they were superior. Can’t do that. Sign of a mentally weak team. Smith better be all over that before FSU.

    • Which is funny because JS’s teams have been defined by never really being out of games and staying focused the whole time. They need to get used to playing with a lead.

      • I’d agree. Getting over the hump from a loser mentality happens in stages. We are at the precipice of the last stage where they not only believe they can win any game, but now stay focused throughout to win the game. This is the final stage of a championship mentality and we will observe how the team responds to success this year compared to last year. They choked 3 winnable games in a row after tasting success last year, perhaps the lesson is learned by losing focus for a half last night.
I think there are some good leaders and a lot of talent, the difference will be between the ears.

      • 3
        2

Yeah they seem less focused when they have the lead. Which makes me think it’s ego/thinking they can just show up. I mean they can win any game, they are correct there, but not by just showing up. Have to give effort at least 90% of the game (there’s always some slacking off by both sides), and they’re around 25-35% right now.

    • I agree with you Angry, that is a concern of mine as well when it seemed the Beavs let their foot of the pedal. Hopefully, they address it this week. Need 100 percent focus against Fresno

  33. 6
    1

It’s always interesting to review this board after attending a game in person. To answer a question Angry asked up top, the pre-game vibe at the tailgate scene was great, but then so was the weather. The stadium was surprisingly loud, even when you factor that no one was shouting at you from the opposite side of the stadium. The atmosphere in there when the project is complete is going to be awesome. BSU fan presence was notable, even had their whole band there, but OSU kept them pretty quiet. Harrison’s first drop could have been a season-defining play. It was certainly a game-defining play for him. Agree that Colletto should be the main back. I mean: who else has broken for 50 yard TD runs the last two years in critical situations? You have the sense that the team plays more confidently when he’s in the offensive huddle.

  34. The game wasn’t as close as the score. At the game there was a general expectation we were going to win. I think the first time I’ve seen that at reser. Ever.

  35. I am much more confident we can win @ Fresno now. The defense can generate interior pressure, defenders can make open field tackles, and the DBs are in the right spot every time to make a play on the ball.

  36. I’d also expect the run game to be much more effective against Fresno St. Boise St had some beef and they were intent on stopping the run. Nolan needs to be consistent and have time for downfield throws again.
Run game may come alive and be much better next week.
Defense looked great, especially for playing against the Frosh qb for 3 quarters…! No Banker hangover this morning.

    • Nolan’s first deep play if the game i believe. Would have hit Harrison in stride with a defender on his heels but Harrison seemed to lose focus and twisted his body awkwardly when trying to catch it and just didnt make the play. Guessing it was around a 25-30 yard pass with a decent chance at a TD or getting 1st and goal, but i’m going off memory.

      • Around that time Nolan missed an open receiver downfield but made a nice throw to a receiver about 20 yards downfield along the sideline I can’t remember who it was but that caught it. I still worry how locked on he gets sometimes.

      • According to the olive
‘One of the Nolan incompletions was a beautifully thrown pass, feathered over the shoulder and through the hands of receiver Tre’Shaun Harrison in stride. It would have been a 53-yard touchdown pass if Harrison had hung on.’

        • Should have added…
53 would have been had the pass been completed…if memory serves he was at maybe the 15 because he bobbles and bounces it off the turf before recovering it on the endzone . So maybe 35 yd pass. Better than most anything we had seen since usc last year for sure

    • I’ll leave this alternative take on Harrison here: from the FG cam replay, he appeared to expect the throw over his right shoulder, but it ended up over the left shoulder and he made the adjustment but failed to make the catch. Not an excuse; he appears to make more drops than others, but that’s what I saw.

  37. A couple points:
A lot has been said about the improved Beavs DB’s, and if they can stay aggressive while limiting the PI’s they may turn out to be the heart of the D. That said, rushing D was pretty good last night as well, take out the big QB’s 71 yd run and you have less than 2 yds per carry. As ever, consider the opponent.

Penalties: 10 for 100 yds. But, only 2 in the first half. Seems to me that’s a real indicator of a lack of focus which JS has avoided to this point. The week 1 to week 2 improvement thing may center on the teaching done by coaches M, Blue, and Perkins.

  38. Mid third quarter scoreboard showed three penalties on us. Then it got to 9 penalties really quick and that didn’t include a declined pass interference call. Overall good first game avoiding a slow start.

    • It says a lot about Bronco expectations when it’s “disastrous” to lose to a third-place power five team on the road. If one looks back over the past 10 years, they’ve been Mountain West great, but we’re not talking undefeated seasons and playoff talk. The fan base is heading towards delusional. Beavers rolled them in the 2013 bowl game also seems like the writer forgot about that.

    • Did they do anything unusual with board, or was it just bright, crisp, good color snd visual depth?

I saw some images of the construction from the field. The west side looked decently sized and more impressive than i expected. I think they can partially offset the loss of seats with the standing room on the “Beaver Walk”(?).

      • The board is large, unencumbered by the previous ads, and bright/crisp, sort of seeing a 4k vs standard def comparison.

The new side is still a skeleton, aside from the lower part of the bowl. At one point the moon was passing through it looked pretty cool. You can’t make out the beaver walk its blocked by coaches boxes and construction. It will likely be a good viewing if you’re front row, if its stacked with people three deep you may not get much view, except of the scoreboard.

I’m curious if they’ll allow season ticket holders to an open house or something where we’d be allowed to check viewing angles before deciding on a new seat.

  39. After sleeping on it, I’m a little more bullish on the Beavs going into Fresno………

I watched the first quarter and a half of Fresno/Cal Poly Thursday night. Fresno scored TD’s on their first 3 possessions to go up 21-0. They looked good. After that? They just looked so so. Did they take their foot off the gas? Did Cal Poly make some adjustments? Hard to say as I didn’t watch much more after that.

The games that make me nervous in no particular order…..At Fresno, USC, at Utah, at UW. The rest of the games I can see OSU being favored and they all look winnable. Not saying the 4 games I mentioned aren’t winnable. Just tougher.

Forecast at kickoff in Fresno shows a temp of 94 degrees cooling down into the mid 80’s by end of the game. Gonna be a hot one and I imagine we will be seeing some guys cramp up.

A loss to Fresno isn’t the end of the world. But a win and a possible 3-0 start heading into conference play? a 9 or 10 win season certainly looks more attainable. I imagine we’ll all know more after next Saturday.

    • …I imagine we will be seeing some guys cramp up.
Been a lot of talk about the depth of the Beavs; interior D-line is my biggest concern in the heat.

  40. After watching a bit of USC and Utah games,

USC had 3 pick 6 ints so that game was fairly skewed by poor qb play but Rice still had a lot of success running against USC which should be the case for the Beavs, much like last year. If Beav defense can continue Williams and get some pressure I think it will be a win at home.

Utah had some coaching issues and they should have won the game. Utes showed poor tackling and looked gassed at the end when Florida just lined up and ran at them. Rising is a gamer and likely the best qb Beavs will face. On the road is a challenge but Beavs should be in the game with a shot to win. Beav defense may be the difference in both of these games.

  41. 2 Boise state players are done for the season after last night. WR broke his leg and CB has a torn ACL.
Havent heard of any caualties on the OSU side

  42. 4
    1

I’ll give my 2 cents of the game day experience. It was the first game I had been to since COVID, we didn’t make any games last year because of my sons Pop-Warner schedule conflicting with every home game.
We were late arriving and just got to our section at kickoff, so we didn’t see any of the pre-game activity.
    Parking was easier than usual.
The new video board is incredible. Though, there were some technical glitches when showing replays, it’s never a good sign when we can see the computer screen and mouse cursor on the jumbotron.
Boise showed up strong, hard to put a number on it since a lot of folks were wearing orange on both sides, but most of the south endzone was Bronco territory. (They have a good school band too) and Their fans were pleasant, before and after the game.
Fans were engaged and loud, bringing a good energy to the venue.
    The Bad:
The temporary lights on the west side need to be adjusted. The angle was such that it was glaring into the crowd. I had a hat on, so that helped…but, Mrs. Sweaty got a bit of a headache.
The in game club music was too much. It was loud and constant. The club music was going when the PA announcer was speaking making it hard to hear him. If there is a way to isolate the music more toward the student section and less toward the… adults. I was in section 220, and about 1/4 of the people were wearing earbuds or noise cancelling headsets.
Beer was too expensive. I forgot to bring a “walking beer” to drink from my parking spot to the stadium, so $12 for a decent beer was all my heart and wallet would justify.

    • Everything you posted is spot on.

My seats are in 120 you should have waved down at us. Damn the noise was sniffling at times…and I dont mean crowd noise. There were times the alumni band and bsu band AND the dj music were ALL going at the same time, wtf?

The lights were irritating but somewhat understandable given the circumstances.

Beer line was so long I simply avoided altogether, sad day no beer for oj.

Bsu fans were out of it most of the game due to the score but brought the noise when they climbed outta their hole scorewise. Considering how many of them were at reser, they were considerably less douschy than anything I’ve ever seen drive up from Eugene.

The crowd was engaged, the tailgating was still popping off, the weather was awesome, the new side looks like it will fit nicely despite not being mirrored, I may try to get tix on that side when complete, I hate facing the sun. Good outcome and a w. Got not gripes today

  43. 2
    3

For the horror buffs out there, the lady and I are trying to curate a movie playlist for the next two months as we’re both Fall and horror fans and love this time of year. Hit me with anything good you’ve seen recently. Any era and style is fine.

  44. Late hot takes,

I think you could describe that as a hot and cold win. Every unit had great plays and some really bad plays. Boise St is trading on its past reputation, clearly the newest coach had not brought the scrappiness that had made the past teams really good. Their energy level was pretty low through the game.

On offense – Nolan showed every part of his good and his bad last night. Improved deep balls but a couple real dumb throws led to picks. That won’t work on the road. Both picks were also in the Beavs side of the field so they got lucky Boise St didn’t cash in. RB will continue as a committee which is fine. Hopefully someone takes charge. Fenwick with a terrible fumble but then an outstanding TD run. Martinez looked like he belonged. Longest run by a RB was 15 yards. OL had more than an acceptable amount of penalties but they allowed zero sacks. WR did a great job on a number of drives but then a big drop early by Harrison. I see why Bolden is on the field, he laid out a BSU defender to spring Colletto for his TD. Musgraves had a great day catching, but then had two penalties in a row. 4-13 on third down leaves much to be work on.

On defense, pretty much everything looked good except the pass interference penalties. No body looked lost and the LB were flying around the field. Had issues adjusting the backup QB since I wouldn’t have expected BSU to pull their 4 year starter so early. Good third down defense and getting stops when BSU drove deep into Beavs side of the field.

Special teams looked ok. Hayes missing a 47 yarder isn’t too concerning but it would be great if he starts making those. Punting, no issues which means it went great.

I don’t think the beavs win on the road playing like they did yesterday. Too many turnovers and penalties. But the silver lining is that most of the issues are correctable. Opening line feels right. Beavs need that underdog motivation after a good step forward.

Misc items – watching the TV broadcast back, they really adjusted the lighting for viewers. It looked nothing like that in person. Had the feel of a high school stadium lights with heavy shadows and some dark spots. Ditto to above, it felt like the sun was in your face the entire time.
    – new side looks pretty good. Fans will be right on top of the field and it’ll be loud.
    – beer lines are too long
    – no more opponents band

  45. Emphasis and fixing problems this week of practice.

    1. Dropped balls. Goes without saying catch the ball!

    2. Penalties. Need less penalties all around. 100 yds is bad.

    3. Improve the run game. The run game was pretty average aside from Colleto’s big run. Still would like to see Jam.

    4. Stop committing turnovers. If it wasn’t for the defense getting 5 this game could’ve been much closer. Can’t be turning the ball over that much against the pac 12 teams and Fresno.

5.Improve the pressure and sacks. They had 2 sacks but with the way the game was being dominated they should’ve had more. 1 of the sacks was from JC transfer Ryan Cooper who plays nickel. I saw a lot of guys step up and standout but I didn’t see anyone in the front 7 do much especially in the passing game

    • More sacks- loved the way the line stuffed the run game most of the night. I think they had 22 rush yards med way through the third. More sacks would be nice but they had to keep contain of the backup qb.

I recall a play where Gould got the ball and lost four yards because he tried to outrun the safety to the corner.

He’s fast, but not that fast. He and Lowe need to be patient and follow blockers

    • BSU QB’s were quick to get rid of it or roll out. Our DL did a good job of collapsing the pocket and making them feel the pressure. Think about Bachmeier’s first few series.

  46. Eggers piece has a few good quotes, this from The Hammer:
“Coming in, we knew Coach Bray had us dialed in,…With the schemes and how simple it is and by allowing us to play fast, it’s really night and day. The sky is the limit for our defense. We just need to be able to finish games.”

Jaydon Grant added: “We’ll enjoy the win, because they’re hard to come by. We took a step, but we’re nowhere close to where we want to be, nowhere near where we’re capable of being.”

  47. After week 1, Beavs have a better projected record than Nike, according to ESPN FPI.

Still not much respect in the overall rankings, as they have us 7th best in the conference (with Nike ahead of us).

  48. Early look at Fresno

    – It’s all about the QB Haener. They win or lose on his performance. He is an elite QB and he has WRs that help him out.
    – In their three losses last year, he turned the ball over 10 times. vs Oregon, lost 2 fumbles, vs Hawaii 4 INTs and 1 fumble, vs Boise St 3 INTs.
    – in their wins – 2 INTs in 10 games so the Beavs have to get to him and force turnovers.
    – He’s very good at home. 70% completion rate at home last year but did lose to Boise St

Not sure if there is a clear game plan to slow him down, it might have to be reduce the amount of times he touches the ball. A slow grinding offense by the beavs might be the best bet. BUT if Fresno is within one score near the end of the game, it’ll be pretty impossible to stop Haener from driving down the field.

xfactors are the “new” coaching staff.

misc – Smith was his primary recruiter when he went to UW.

  49. I scanned the Olive Sports the other day. It seemed like the headlines downplayed the 49 points given up, and the 3 scored. I think there was one headline that had it but it was buried pretty well. You’d think given a team of Oregon’s elite talent, and Lanning’s “national championship coaching resume,” there might have been more attention called to the fact in his first outing he gave up 49 points.

But then finally an article pointing out they gave up a 90% third down conversion rate, and it was their worst performance in 17 years.

    Enjoy if you like:

The Oregon media want the Quacks to be playoff-relevant so badly, probably a shock to have that discussion end so quickly. Even Canzano went to Georgia to report on the game for his own site. He already started a bromance with Lanning after Cristobal left him high and dry.

    • I like the writer calling out the defender for waving his finger in the air like he had done something great after Harrison dropped the sure TD. Boise media is harsh on the team! Very high expectations. Avalos isn’t going to last long at this pace.

  50. Line moves from Fresno by 1 to Beavs by 1 already. Bettors thinking Boise St win is worth more than it was. I’d guess the line moves to even by game day.

    • Daschel calls it 31-28 Fresno.
The question is (from your nice Early Look up above) “what did the Hawaii and Boise State defenses do to cause Haener to get picked off?” Seems Beavs DB’s could be the difference this week.

    • That has USC in the national championship. I just can’t see them making that huge of a jump. I k ow they got like 40 transfers and some are big time but to have all of these that are learning new schemes and coaches. Rice isn’t shit.

  51. The saying is “defense travels” and I believe that to be true. Have to have a serviceable defense to win on the road. Our defense looked great all game. The announcers mentioned they had pulled some starters when Boise had that 74 yard run. Not sure if that was true but definitely would make sense. We need to do the same thing to Fresno we did to Boise out of the gate. Make Haener uncomfortable. Doesn’t necessarily have to be pressure. Those athletic picks by our DBs will do the trick. I do not think Fresno’s D will be as good as Boise’s. So I think our defense is the key here.

Fresno game comes down to execution and ball security. Based on very limited sample size and reviewing the tape, I think Beavs are better team… but does Musgrave have another run of stupid penalties at the goal line? Do WR drop critical passes? Does Nolan throw a couple costly picks? Do the RBs hold on the the ball? Do DBs make plays or drop potential INTs? Does JS go for it on 4th and 2 from midfield when we’re up 10?… or does this veteran team finally learn how to win tough games on the road. I’m predicting the latter… Beavs 32-26. I don’t see the Beavs getting blown out but I could foresee the Beavs in a route if everything clicks. Say 42-20 best case. 27-21 FSU worst case.
