JT Daniels getting benched today in favor of a Sophomore for WVU. Guess the Beavs really wouldnt have been better off had he come here.

  2. Per Nick daschel: Oregon State injury update. Just talked to Jonathan Smith.

OUT: S Jaydon Grant, CB Alex Austin, LB Jack Colletto, RB Deshaun Fenwick, WR Anthony Gould, OT Tyler Morano

WILL PLAY: RT Taliese Fuaga, WR Jesiah Irish, OLB John McCartan, RB Jam Griffin

    AVAILABLE: Heneli Bloomfield

  3. The “Brawl of the Wild” in Bozeman reminds me how lame it is that the Civil War is being “renamed” and they still haven’t come up with a name. Subcommittees must still be engaging with focus groups…”Does this alternative adequately address your sensitivity criteria?”

  4. Not a bad first quarter. Good start for a road game. ASSU missing the FG was a bonus.

More of the same please. I’ll take a ho hum 20-10 win any day.

  5. Martinez kept that play alive, too bad BG wasn’t able to hit him with the pass.
Important to jump on the devils to kill their motivation, so far not happening.

  6. BIG JIM, in his best Capt Obvious imatation says this drive is important for the Beavs.
Until the lead is 3 (maybe 2) scores, the devils will keep believing their O can keep a W within reach.

The passing game was really nice on the first drive and non existent again since. Strange how gulbranson can’t string together success. Not sure what to make of it.

  8. Bray can’t be happy with the 3rd down performance today.
Always terrible to give up points in the last few minutes of the half, can’t have that here.

  9. Halftime adjustments –

Better go for it if the alternative is a 35+ yard FG attempt
Run the ball more, mix up the type of carries like the first drive.
ASU is plus 5min on TOP. Need to equal that out so the defense doesn’t tire out
Have to put up points on this first drive to put ASU on their back.

Of the injured guys, looks like only Fuaga made it back. Miller is playing guard.
Report said Wright went into the locker room early with an injury.
So the secondary is nearly all backups. Explains some of the issues on defense being a bit leaky today.

    • I have a question. Because this has been bothering me. Is a draw or screen not in Lindgrens playbook? Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen the Beavs attempt one.

    • Wright returned and is OK, looks like it was only a “comfort station” break. lol

Agree on your adjustments, I’d like to see some sweeps.

When you let an average (at best) team hang around…….

Need to get points on this first drive of the 2nd half.

Clown around, get clowned. Let’s go Beavs. This ASU team isn’t better than you are.

  11. What’s our retuning lines look like next year? Really good young offensive skill player foundation. I haven’t looked at either line in depth.

    • OL looks pretty good. Lose Kipper for sure and most likely Gray.

Next years line could look like this,
      T – Fuaga
      G – Bloomfield
      C – Leavengood
      G – Brewer
      T – Morano

And then you have a couple guys with a lot of snaps like Miller who is starting at G today for Bloomfield/Brewer. Lopez was the highest rated OL in the freshman class. Was mentioned as a possible candidate to burn his redshirt. Strand was mentioned as the next guy up if Morano or Fuaga were both out.

    • The talent thats been recruited has been much better. DL should be better at least depth wise. Not sure if Rawls is back, Hodgins can come back if he wants.

OL talent thats been recruited is great. We lose Kipper for sure, possibly Gray tests the waters in the draft.

  12. Our defense is really good. Playing with backups in the secondary and not giving up much. Always a few guys going towards the ball carrier. Not many missed assignments. #19 is going to be really good next year.

  13. Ben’s best game. The depth was on display all over the field which was great to see. Great work to take care of business in a look ahead spot. Next week is going to be fun.

  14. The announcers wont call next week the Civil War? Efn whimps. Would ignore it but they said that they cant say it. They actually brought it up.

  15. Sure hope Shaun Aguano, with his connection to Chandler HS, doesn’t put the brakes on Beavs recruiting there……in baseball and other sports as well.

If we had a field goal kicker would we have just one loss? And did smith go for the win against Fresno state because he knows which player is more likely to convert?

  17. Bray should get another game ball. The defense is so much better than recent years it is amazing. Jim Wilson said during the broadcast that this is a defensive team now, although it used to be an offensive team in the first few years with JS but not now.
It is true and the reason why JS should be shifting to an NFL circa 1990’s strategic approach.

    Another good win.

8-3 yet only Utah really had the Beavs number. Easily could be 10-1.

Maybe this means lots of good football to look forward to in the future.

    • We want USC and Utah to win too, right? Keep those teams as highly ranked as possible while also giving the Beavs a chance to leapfrog any of UW/Oregon/UCLA by the end of next week.
The potential is there for a 3rd place conference finish for the Beavs if those teams lose out(unlikely they all do, but possible)

  18. That was a fairly complete game. A few hiccups but fixed at halftime. Trailed by 5 min in TOP at halftime, won the game TOP by 9 min. Won second half TOP 22 min to 8 min. Few mental mistakes.

A couple concerning injuries but they didn’t stop the team at all. Lots of guys got a bunch of snaps.

Just gotta hope the injured guys get healthy enough to play Saturday.

  19. Ideal results for remaining games,

    Help with bowl game slot,
    USC wins
    Utah wins
    Colorado wins

    Just to help the rankings
    Oklahoma wins
    UAB wins
    Arkansas wins
    Georgia Tech wins

  20. I’ve been impressed with the steady improvement of BG. He keeps adding things to his repertoire, like taking off with the ball. I know these aren’t the best defenses, but for him to go 5-1 with 2 W on the road Is great. I think we’ve seen the last of Nolan as the starter. It’s BG’s position to lose.

I find it interesting that after the two most impressive victories back to back that I can remember, the number of comments here is a fraction of what it has been during most of Smith’s tenure. Speaking for myself, I just found it more satisfying to watch solid football by my team than to come in here and comment on it. I think it’s safe to say now that Smith was a great to excellent hire, warts and all as someone once said, the key factors for that making changes in the coaching staff when circumstances dictated doing so (firing Tibesar and promoting Bray, something Riley never did with his assistants) and going for a slow, sustainable rebuild (unlike Dennis). An 8-9 win season is what we should expect from this program year to year. That would put in play the occasional 10 win season/conference championship scenario 2-3 times a decade.

I reserve the right to change my mind on the basis of Oregon’s game tonight, but my early inclination is to think the Beavs win rather convincingly next week in the Civil War.

    • I noticed the comment count was low for CAL. People are usually apt to be more vocal when unhappy or they perceive something as negative.

This is impressive, even given the current state of their programs:

      Cal: 38-10
      ASU: 31-7.

Noticed that in Beavers have held 6 teams to 17 or fewer points. That’s sounds pretty uncommon in a game where offense and points are emphasized.

I love the emphasis on D, the improved tackling, the running game, and the use of TEs.

  22. The Vols are getting close to kissing their playoff assess goodbye down 49-31 with about 11 minutes left. Spencer Rattler is going off tonight after being a major disappointment for most of the season.

  23. And USC takes the lead……

Also of note, with the Beavs win today they can finish no worse than tied for 6th no matter what happens next weekend. WSU won in Tucson so only 7 PAC-12 teams will be bowl eligible.

  24. Announcers making a point about Nix being strictly pocket passer and not really moving around at all.

Hope Utes punish some ducks in a very physical game, Utes should win 31-28

  25. 1
    1

Nix has a pretty good limp, saw that it may be an ankle but I’d guess it is his knee. Utes aren’t yet forcing him to scramble and haven’t stopped the run so maybe they make some adjustments and NIx loses his touch after a while.

  26. That RB Shannon runs hard. Good to see late in the games, that will pay off for him if the opposing D is tired, and/or thinks the game is over….

  27. Hopefully Utah just ignores Nix on any run play becaus ehe isn’t going anywhere.

Nice scoop and score to start the 3rd for Utes.

Utes rb Thomas looks like he is very rusty and a step slow to the lane. Rising looks like his legs aren’t right and no zip on his throws.

PAC12 weeks of atrition for many teams right now.

      1

I’m starting to wonder if Rising is still injured. What a shitty game. Another game where QB play costs the team a game. I only care because it’s always nice to keep the Quacks out of the championship game, but that did not happen!

    Two observations from this game:

-If this is the Nix we see next week, Beavs defense will dominate. He can’t run, he’s not even taking deep drops. Take away the short throws and he’s ineffective.
-I made this point earlier in the week but the Beavs will absolutely have to make plays in the passing game to be able to score on Oregon. Utah currently only averaging 3.1 yards a carry on 24 attempts. Riding Martinez to victory won’t be enough.

OT- Big Tinks and his tinklers revert back to the norm and get embarrassed in crunch time by Portland St. losing 79-66. I can’t remember them every losing to the Viks before.

    Thoughts post ASU game..
It was my first time seeing the Beavs in person for several years! ASU has a very nice facility and it feels like the crowd is on top of the field. It has the potential to be a very rowdy atmosphere, I’m sure when they have a better team it gets pretty loud in there. There were plenty of orange and black around and it was very nice enjoying some football late november in the low 70s.. Almost had to get a snow cone to stay cool haha : )

Aside from the missed FG early on, not too many things to be disappointed about. ASUs RB was pretty quick. The beavers D made some nice plays and held them to 7. The play of the game for me was the incomplete one handed grab by Bolden. WOW! Biggest disappointment was not seeing the LEGEND Colleto on the field. Saw him on sidelines with no pads on.

Feels like the program is headed in the right direction. The only losses this year have been close games against upper echelon teams. I like the matchup next week. Should be an exciting game. I do believe Nix is the better QB but not sure how healthy he is. What do ya’ll think about Gulbranson vs Gebbia? I think Gulbranson has done enough to keep the job for next week. He’s kind of a game manager but does have some quickness to pick up some yds with his feet if needed.

“ What do ya’ll think about Gulbranson vs Gebbia? I think Gulbranson has done enough to keep the job for next week.”

      Are you high?

Couple of interesting points i saw in paper:

Duck Safety had a career game w/14 tackles, 2 INTS:

      Utah controlled Ducks run game pretty well, less than 60 yards rushing, Nix with only one positive carry;

Wittigham said Ducks D has athletes, never let Rising/Utah get in sync.

On a side note, OLive hyperbole refers to the “legend of Nix,” as if the transfer is a program savior, and also disgusting is the writer even said “we” when referring to a question to Wittingham if Wittinghsm though “we (Ducks) got the fourth down conversion…” Wittingham did not think so.

This should be a very interesting CW.

      • Yeah weird how the announcers during the utah/duck game were swinging on bo picks buts too. Calling him a legend in Eugene and a player that would/should be enshrined in a yuck hof type player. I get hyperbole is the product they’re selling but for that kid? Don’t get the hype.

      • It’s another cycle of no QB development in Quackland. I know we fans would not mind a game-changing portal QB, but at least JS is trying with Gulbranson. Why do these “elite” young QBs keep signing with Oregon only to get replaced by portal talent?

  31. One good thing with Oregon winning is that, combined with the Beavs winning, an early afternoon kick (as opposed to 7:30) for the Civil War seems highly likely. UO will flip spots with Utah and join the top 10, and with the Vols losing, likely reaching the 9 spot. OSU should leap frog some losers above them to at least # 21, and maybe pass UCLA to reach the 20th spot. #9 vs # 20 is a more attractive “prime time” matchup than (about) 15 Washington vs. the unranked Cougs.

  32. 3

I hope JS and staff watched that game last night. It looked like Utah staff didn’t believe that Nix was hurt.

Interesting to watch USC, UCLA, Oregon and Utah all with similar zone read qbs, but on a night when they needed to use that strength only Williams from USC actually ran without hesitation. DTR looked like he had a concussion mid 3rd quarter, Rising looked like he refused to take the ball on several opportunities, Nix didn’t run at all except the clinching 4th & 1.

Utah missed 2 figs, had turnover on downs in the red zone 2x, and Rising tossed 3 ints. Utes had a horrible game plan and seemed quite limited on offense apart from Duck defense. Thomas looked horrible and slow, Rising had zero accuracy all night and the Ducks apparently disguised the secondary coverage pre to post snap pretty well.

BG better be watching film to prepare.

We know Ducks are front runners and the Nix injury is a wildcard for next week. If it is an ankle he may be fine. If it is a knee he will be the same or worse by end of this week.

Thoughts on USC- I now hope they make it to the playoff and get matched up with Georgia. If they get in they likely win it in 2 high scoring entertaining games.

Civil War score prediction- Beavs 31- Ducks 17
Beavs defense holds to form and is a force in Reser, Special teams and steady run game, play action and a couple of effective trick plays allow the Beavs to prevail. BG holds serve at home and plays great.

  33. OT, speculation on coaching changes:

Stanford: There has been increased speculation recently about whether this might be David Shaw’s last season on The Farm. It should be. Whether it’s a firing (less likely) or Shaw stepping away to do something else (more likely), the joy and promise of what Stanford football can be is gone.

It’s remarkable to think about how close Stanford came to playing for a national title under Shaw between 2011-2015. With a little luck, it could have happened three times. And as college football was evolving into a more wide-open game, Stanford was a fun-to-watch antidote that simply wanted to beat the crap out of people at the line of scrimmage.

Nebraska: For about 59 minutes, the Cornhuskers were a better team than Wisconsin. But that didn’t matter Saturday. Of course it didn’t. Nebraska’s nightmare is seemingly never-ending, and a 15-14 loss to the Badgers confirms that this program needs big, bold action with its next coaching hire to rescue it from permanent irrelevance.”

Didn’t Nebraska do a big bold hire w/Frost?

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/columnist/dan-wolken/2022/11/20/college-football-week-12-misery-index-tennessee-unc-florida/10743907002/

  34. The Beavs looked good yesterday and BG looks to be progressing. Watch USC vs UCLA and I gotta say I’m even more impressed with the games the Beavs gave the University of Spoil Children. Williams was really good and is the QB I wish we had… man can you imagine that?

  35. Nice seeing the Beavers-Ducks game get a decent window – the only real competition in the slot is the Iron Bowl and that game means nothing to anyone outside of Alabama. I like the Beavs chances if they can avoid turnovers and get a few on defense.

  36. 7
    3

Lanning seems to be a really bad game coach. Every game he has a head scratcher. If Nix can’t run, this game gets a lot easier for Beavs. I’m thinking the refs will do everything in their power to help set up Ducks/USC championship. Look for every spot to be 1/2 yard in favor of Ducks and lots of holding calls on Beavs. That said, I think Beavs overcome and win this thing 34-27. Btw, Hayes is a POS kicker. No wonder JS went for it twice at UW.

  37. 5
    6

Lots of hopium on this board for next weekend’s game. Beavs have the coaching advantage but personnel disadvantages in the trenches, again.

Homers forget that Cristobal (yes, CRISTOBAL) was able to jump out to a 31-9 lead on talent alone last year.

  38. “I reserve the right to change my mind on the basis of Oregon’s game tonight, but my early inclination is to think the Beavs win rather convincingly next week in the Civil War.”….wannabeav last night.

OK, wanna, Oregon’s game is in the books. How ya feelin’ now?

I’ll guess Nix will be in better physical shape next Saturday.
I’ll guess Bray will take a close look at how swoosh RB #0 was held in check late in the game (after being so productive early).
What I’m not ready to guess is which Beavs will return. Austin? Grant? Colletto? who else?

Oh yeah, pretty sure Reser will be worth more than the oft quoted “3 pt home field advantage”.
    GO BEAVS!

  39. If wsu beats UW, Cal beats UCLA, USC beats ND, Utah beats Colorado, and Beavs beat Ducks, it would be Ducks vs USC in P12 championship game. Then if USC were to beat Oregon, USC would likely be in CFP. Oregon would then have 4 losses. Would Rose Bowl select Beavs(9-3) over UW(9-3) UCLA(8-4), Oregon(9-4), and Utah(9-3)? I’d say there’s a small chance because UW would be coming off loss to WSU and Utah was in Rose Bowl last year so the Beavs might be more attractive than the other options.

      • From the Rose Bowl site,

In both the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and the CFP, if Pac-12 or Big Ten Conference Champion was selected to the National Championship or National Semifinals, that team was released to play in that game and the Tournament of Roses would select a replacement team. In the past, that allowed teams like the University of Texas (2005, 2006) or Texas Christian University (2010) to play in the Rose Bowl Game. Now, however, in the CFP-system, the Tournament of Roses may only select a team from its partner conferences.

Should a team from the Big Ten or Pac-12 be selected to go to the College Football Playoff, the Tournament of Roses will traditionally select the next-highest CFP-ranked team from that conference. There is, however, a caveat to that clause in the contract.

If the next-highest ranked team is in a ‘cluster’ of teams, meaning there is another team or teams from the same conference ranked within several spots of each other, the Tournament of Roses will select the team from that cluster that will result in the best possible matchup for the Rose Bowl Game.

In a cluster situation, the Tournament of Roses will take into account factors, in no particular order, such as: the last time a team played in the Rose Bowl Game, head-to-head results, regular season schedule, overall record, opponents played, past playoff or bowl appearances and performance, and historical matchups.

It should be noted that it is the strong preference of the Tournament of Roses, Pac-12 and Big Ten Conferences, that the highest-ranked available team in each conference be selected as the replacement team.

So maybe not zero but a 0.00000000000000000001% chance. Beavs would have to be the next highest ranking team after USC to be selected, which would require an act of God to happen. It would be UCLA losing, UW losing, Utah losing, Beavs crushing Oregon, and then Oregon losing in the title game badly and USC winning out.

          • If Ducks lose to Beavs, they both finish 9-3
If UW loses to WSU, they finish 9-3
If Utah wins, they finish 9-3
If UCLA wins, they finish 9-3
            USC beats ND finish 11-1
Is it possible that Uw plays in conference championship game instead of Ducks when both are 2 loss in conference due to the head to head, if UW wins the Apple Cup?

So USC beats UW and go to CFP, Huskies then have a 3rd loss and there are 5 teams at 3 losses for Rose Bowl to choose. If the criteria is based on trends, Beavs would be on a 3 game win streak and haven’t been to Rose Bowl for the longest.
If based on tv, probably Oregon or UW, if based on rankings, it would be a group of teams all about 10-17 ranked together.
I think however that WSU needs to win the Apple Cup and UW slides back enough to join the crowd and Ducks go limping into the game against USC after losing the Civil War and Trojans curb stomp them by 28 so the Ducks drop significantly after 2 bad losses.

Then it seems the decision could come down to UW and OSU which may favor UW because of the head to head, but they would be coming off a loss as well.
I’m trying to see how it might still happen. Thanks for the posts above to at least start the dreaming again.

          • UW needs help to go the conference title game.

Two roads both require UW beating WSU
1 – Colorado beats Utah. UW ends in a tie with Oregon. Wins head to head
            2. Utah wins, Oregon loses, UCLA loses. Three way tie. Since Utah and UW did not play, they go to tiebreakers where UW wins the tiebreaker over Oregon and Utah. It’s at like the 4th tiebreaker where they beat Utah.

      • Beavs win CW 70-0… move up to 14 in rankings. Utes squeak by Buffs. Drop in ranking to 15. UCLA 16. Ducks fall to 20 after USC destroys them in p12 championship. UW falls to 19 after losing to WSU. Rose bowl selects Beavs as highest ranked team after USC goes to CFP. I’d put the odds of all this happening to slightly higher that 0%

  40. Noticed in the OregonLive a UO safety was flagged for the second straight week for targeting.

I expect lots of cheap shots next week, particularly on Martinez, Colletto, Gulbranson.

  41. The initial line is Oregon -3. I would say that’s too generous to Oregon if Nix remains in the same condition. Beavs should be the ones favored by a point or so in that scenario. But its impossible to know what his condition will be by the time CW kicks off. If he has his running ability back it will be difficult to hold them under 30, so BG will really have to come up big. The opportunity is there though, the Ducks pass D isn’t good.

      • We definitely really need all hands on deck for this game. Sorry to say I’d rather not have Fenwick play. There’s just more talented RBs that should be getting carries unless Jam is still hurt.

      • Hmm if you can get -7 that seems like a great bet. To me that would be the line if Nix was at full health. Another thing to consider is that the Ducks haven’t proven anything on the road this season. After the blowout loss to Georgia, the only remotely difficult road game was at WSU and they barely survived. All other road games were cupcakes.

          • Good question: What is the Beavers highest “quality” win this season?

            BSU;
            Fresno State;
            Montana State;
            Stanford;
            WSU;
            Co;
            Cal; or
            ASU.

Ducks best wins probably Utah, UCLA?

That Beavers non-con schedule looks pretty good. They’re doing well in their conferences.

BTW, the SEC just enjoyed a bunch of non-con cupcakes this weekend.

          • I’d say WSU. They’re a good team and we handled them.

Crazy to have a year where we took care of business against all lesser teams and didn’t drop any that we “shouldn’t” have. That’s the mark of a well-coached team. USC and UW were painful close losses but obviously quality teams.

          • Yeah, plus Haener was healthy, he’s likely to be a NFL draft pick (with the only real knocks being his size and perceptions of arm strength), it was on the road, and in a notoriously tough environment.

          • Pac12 fans always criticize SEC teams for scheduling late non-con cupcake teams, but they’re being smart by not beating each other up or risking their rankings late in the season.

    • Oh the conflict…the duality of Beaver and Gopher….

The ramifications are interesting: having to celebrate and curse at the same time? Drinking games – “Beavers/Gophers score! Drink/Drink!” – getting you loaded by halftime? The caloric loading of two game day menus….

  42. Aiden chiles is completing 77% of his passes. Close to 3k yds and 33 passing tds. Has ran for 850 yds and 9 tds. Huge to land this guy. Guess we’ll see in early signing period in not to distant future.

    • Possible rematch with the winner…if USC blows it. Not a fun bowl matchup but better than traveling to El Paso.

Boise beat Fresno earlier this year but Haener did not play.

      • I had thought there used to be a no repeat clause? But I could be wrong.

I wouldn’t be excited about going to the LA bowl again and playing a team the Beavs have already played (and beaten). And I can’t see beaver fans traveling for that either.

        • It’s a prefer not to repeat clause because the Sun Bowl and LA Bowl have to take based on standings. So it could happen.

I would say the LA bowl should get re-partnered and moved up in the bowl selections. Best stadium other than the Rose Bowl in the PAC12 bowl games. And fairly easy to travel to.

Order should be CFP, Rose, LA, Vegas, Holiday, Alamo and Sun Bowl.
