At the beginning of the year, I was hoping for 8-4 plus a bowl win. I thought that would be a good season and an improvement over last year. That record (or better!) is still in play so I’m in a good spot. This, despite the Pac-12 being significantly better overall than last year. I think UO can be beat, especially on the road. Beavs win 21-17. It will depend the ability of the offense to be balanced and not turn the ball over..
I’ve come around a bit on BG. I still feel like the Beavs are at a disadvantage against teams that have superior QB play but he is improving. One thing that I think goes under the radar is his play pre-snap. I feel like he knows what’s going on with the defense a majority of the time and switches up the play into something positive.
“One thing that I think goes under the radar is his play pre-snap. I feel like he knows what’s going on with the defense a majority of the time and switches up the play into something positive.”
Smith mentioned BG has already graduated. Perhaps he gets to spend a ton of time in the film room?
He’s a 3 year Freshman thanks to Covid. Also, he may have taken Summer classes as well to help graduate sooner. Depending upon what field he wants to go into, he can now take easier undergrad or go big and take graduate classes and get a Masters degree.
BG was a high academic achiever coming out of high school (NHS) that originally committed to CAL (high academic standards). Not surprising that he’s been able to graduate in three years while likely staying on campus for summer.
At the beginning of the season I had the Beavs going 10-2 in the regular season with losses against Utah and UW. Being 8-3 going into the (un)Civil War. The Beavs at minimum will go 8-5 this year matching 2009 season or at best 10-3 which will be the best record OSU has had since going 12-1 in 2000.
My prediction is 27-20 Beavs(There will be plenty of FG attempts in this game for both teams)
For reference, here are all the Riley era winning seasons with Bowl games:
2004: 7-5 overall 5-3 in conference beat ND in Insight Bowl
2006: 10-4 overall 6-3 in conference beat Missouri in Sun Bowl
2007: 9-4 overall 6-3 in conference beat Maryland in Emerald Bowl
2008: 9-4 overall 7-2 in conference beat Pitt in Sun Bowl (infamous 3-0 win)
2009: 8-5 overall 6-3 in conference lost to BYU in Vegas Bowl
2012: 9-4 overall 6-3 in conference lost to Texas in Alamo Bowl
2013: 7-6 overall 4-5 in conference beat Boise State in Hawaii Bowl
2021: 7-6 overall 5-4 in conference lost to Utah State in LA Bowl
I optimistically had the Beavs at 11-1 and Rose Bowl bound with a loss to Utah.
The vast improvement of USC, UW, and sustained performance of Oregon was unexpected because all 3 programs had new coaches/transfer qbs with new systems.
If Nolan had performed at least at his average, USC was a win, UW was the loss I didn’t expect and has actually turned the season rather than the USC loss.
Even at 8-3 it is a top 10 season in the last 30 years for OSU. Go win 2 more and it is top 3 in program history for win total. Well done Beavs.
Good to note that this may be the year that they have won all games they should win, and had narrow losses for the couple of toss up, Utah at Utah will usually lean as a loss.
ya, your prediction was more optimistic. We’re definitely trending in the right direction though. I had Utah and UW as a loss at the beginning of the season because Utah still had Cam Rising and the altitude would affect the throws from Nolan. @UW is always a challenge for the Beavs and where it was in the schedule felt like it would be a weird game(and it was). The USC game was the only surprise loss for me, but I knew it would go either way.
To your comment of win games we should, you’re absolutely right, but I think we were favored in 1 of our losses, weren’t we?
Seems like a match up of primary strengths, UO run D/OSU Run O, healthy(?) Nix/OSU DBs…
If there has to be FG attempts, how about Atticus within 40 or less? Hayes beyond that?
Can UO get into the PAC title game if the lose the CW? OSU if not, OSU is going to have to play particularly clean, and play through lots of bad calls without losing their composure. They’ve done it before.
Reser will be loud for the diminished capacity, would have been sweet to have the new side done by CW though.
Both defenses appear to be evenly matched in the stat column. only outlier is the Beavs held Cal to 9 yards total rushing; whereas, Oregon held Cal to 74 yards rushing. Otherwise pretty even with Pass and Rushing allowed. I don’t see those Fowl rushing over 175 yards on us.
Problem in that run game could be Nix. Ideally he’s not 100% still and won’t be contributing much as he has ran for nearly 600 yds. Also, historically we’ve sucked vs running qb’s and even under Bray that’s been a problem.
OSU averages 193 yards per game themselves. So, Oregon is going to have to stop OSU’s running game also. If both teams run the ball, it might be a 2 hour game lol
Oregon’s run game is really the strength of that offense. They get 6-8 yards on first down, force opponents to bring the safeties into the box, then burn them with Franklin and Hutson.
Looking back at my preseason prediction. (Almost)Nailed it!
“I’m looking at ASU as being the biggest dumpster fire in the league this year, so I have them, Stanford and WSU as Ws, along with Boise, Mt State, Colorado, UW and Cal plus 1 from the remaining teams in an upset as a possible bonus
So 8-4 (with a shot at 9-3)for me plus a bowl loss.”
No prob, i havent been following too closely in recent weeks. Final week this week, and games are now up.
We do have another Thursday game this week, so get your picks in early
I don’t think kicker is a wildcard, it’s pretty much a given they can’t make kicks other than extra points. Even Sappington missed the chip shot vs WSU that would have made it a three score game.
Probably a bigger wildcard is the Colletto package for 4th downs rather than the kicker.
JS should be updating today at the press conference.
Hoping Colletto isn’t done for the year. It was nice to see Martinez on a traditional 4th down short yardage though.
Key for an OSU win will be sure tackling throughout the game, and containing Nix if he is healthy, getting ints when the opportunity arises.
Well Hayes is 4-10 and Sappington is 5-7 so that seems better. However, I don’t feel comfortable with either option. Anything beyond 40 yds for either of them is essentially a guaranteed miss. Getting a somewhat serviceable kicker will hopefully become an area of focus for them instead of taking all the walk-ons.
Yeah, Sappington is 1-2 beyond 40 and hasn’t tried a 50 yarder. Looks like his career long is 40 yds. Not a good situation and could be a problem as we move forward and can continue to be more competitive.
I had Beavs at 7-5 going into the year. D has been a lot better than I anticipated. QB play has been worse than I expected. Overall, pleasantly surprised with improvement year over year. I’m anticipating the Beavs will beat Ducks in CW but I’m super nervous about BG. He’s yet to play well against a good team. All of our losses have been against good teams and can be pinned on horrible QB play. We need to score early and often. Take advantage of trips into the red zone. Win TO battle. If BG plays great, Beavs win by 2+ scores. If BG is just OK, we win a close game. If BG plays like crap, we lose. IMO, this game has little to do with how the ducks play and everything to do with Beavs. The refs concern me but when have they not.
I think it makes a difference when half of the roster doesn’t mind spearing a guy every so often. Refs can’t just generally avoid those obvious calls, except they did twice in the Utah game Saturday night.
I think Ducks are as dirty as any team I’ve seen this year. Lanning doesn’t really have control of them. They are front runners and if WSU could have beaten them in week 4(?), that locker room would’ve collapsed around him. It is frustrating that they are basically in the championship game win or lose, given the percentages etc. However, Beavs must expect the late hits, cheap shots, dirty plays, especially post play by their linebackers and safeties. All of those guys get in late to a play and try to add some “physicality” which is simply playing out of control and dirty.
Hopefully Martinez and BG get out of the game without career ending injuries by those cheaters. I’d like to see someone prepared for a retaliatory late hit on Nix if they try something like that this year. Not advocating for violence of course, just some “good old Nolan Ryan justice” among the players…
Utah defense looked slow and unable to tackle against the ducks. I expect the Beavs defense to surprise the ducks and actually stifle a lot of what they try to do, much like USC, UW games. Limit turnovers and tackle should be the strategy. Martinez will be the best offensive player on the field Saturday. I expect him to go for a big game because ducks can be gashed as they over-pursue to make the flashy plays. Sewell is really the only guy that can change the game. Beavs wide recievers must catch the balls, and hold on to it when tackled. Best thing about the wrs is the amount of guys who are now reliable, rather than one star that can be double teamed etc.
Ya I was surprised they didn’t call that hit on rising when he was sliding. Later there was a forward progress call, when one of the duck secondary came flying in helmet first into the pile.
The refs missed the 4th down spot as well when Utah held them short. Watched the game for like the final 7 minutes and saw missed call after missed call. The false starts by Oregon’s line, a block in the back, holds etc… the PAC does not want Oregon to lose period. No way we win if it’s close, the refs will fuck over the Beavs no doubt. Need to blow them out to win IMO
Beavs have a 2023 stud visiting this weekend. Safety Luke Talich out of Wyoming.
Watch his film if you have a minute. His combination of size, quick reads, and speed to close in on his target is really impressive to watch. And he hits hard.
Being recruited by several teams, so will he tough to land him. Could be a class headliner, even if his offer sheet seems to be lacking in quality offers. Notre Dame, Oklahoma among the teams lurking but havent offered yet.
Not sure if you’ve noticed but I haven’t seen you comment on it…the Jets are kind of the Beavs of the NFL this year. Great D, strong run game, well-coached…disaster at QB. Truly just a QB away from elite.
At least BG seems likable haha. Zach Wilson might be blowing up his locker room at the moment, took no responsibility for the offensive trainwreck yesterday.
True! Their offense looked functional and even dangerous with Flacco(!) under center at the start of the year. The bar’s incredibly low- they just need a halfway competent game manager.
Assuming Garoppolo is available this offseason and the 9ers don’t re-sign him, that could be a pretty good fit.
I loved that draft class. All of the “experts” talking about the many can’t miss qbs that would go in the first round. No way you have 5 first round worthy qbs.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. I wasn’t high on Wilson. Here’s the thread when they drafted him. The guy you are thinking of is Trey Lance, a pick that I bashed in this thread, and a pick that has been a disaster for the 49ers as you guys drooled all over him and basically claimed I was nuts.
Yeah that game yesterday was embarrassing. The Jets ruined Wilson’s career. He could probably have been good if he sat a few years and then came in to start, but they tried to force him into being the chosen one, and every time the Jets do that it backfires dramatically.
Can tell how pissed off about the FG kicking situation JS is, love they asked him that right at the end when he was tired of answering the same rivalry week question over again over again.
Thanks for the link.
Hope it’s not orange glasses, but sounds to me like Colletto and Austin are likely to be available.
Of the two I’d say Austin is the more important (if we can only have one of ’em).
It’s close, but yeah. My thinking is that there are enough other guys to pick up parts of The Hammer’s game so that his absence would be less costly than any weakness in the DB crew.
Really want ’em both.
I note Daschel understood that Colletto, Austin, and Morano were the three most likely to play; based on Smith’s presser.
The USC standout QB almost certainly moved to the head of the line with his 503-yard, three-TD performance in the high-stakes victory against archrival UCLA. For the season, he has accounted for 3,796 yards of total offense and 40 touchdowns. He’ll have another chance to impress next week as well in the Trojans’ afore-mentioned spotlight game against Notre Dame. The race isn’t quite over yet though, as Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud will have his opportunity in a high-profile setting against Michigan. But in all honesty, it might be down to those two.”
Williams had many incredible throws in the ICLA game and his overall stat line holds up against all others.
I prefer him to win it over the headliners from BIG10 or SEC.
It should be between Williams, Max Duggan from TCU and UW Penix. All 3 seemed to elevate their team beyond expectations (Nix has too but not on my list).
Does Martinez win the PAc12 freshman offensive POY?
I think Martinez definitely could, particularly with a good+ game over Oregon and an OSU win.
And I think even Shannon should get some carries. Dude runs hard, and the Ducks are going to be taking cheap shots at Martinez, Colleto, Gulbranson…need the fresh RB depth to be putting the hit back on the Ducks.
I’m actually starting to think the Beavs could blow out Oregon. It really depends on Gulbranson. But if he goes something like 250 yards and 2 or 3TDs without a pick, it will be a blow out. Our D, run game, team chemistry, and team intelligence are so superior to theirs. Our D has given up an average of 10 points over the past 5 games, and Reser will be [as] insane [as it can be] now that we’re good. This could be interesting. Refs, as mentioned, could be a factor, but I’m not sure even they will be enough.
I think it hinges on executing in the red zone. If they convert those trips to touchdowns or at least field goals then their offense is very effective. If it turns into the Washington game with lack of points then it’ll be a struggle.
Yep Ducks going to stack the box big time. Like ASU, we may need to come out passing to set up run. If BG plays well and can beat single coverage without TOs, Beavs win big… say 41-24.
Back to the kicker discussion, as noted above, should the coaches start offering kickers scholarships out of high school instead of the walk on route?
The big dilemma is the change in the length of scholarships. Instead of year to year, they are guaranteed 4 years in the PAC12.
If the coaches bring in a kicker on scholarship and he craps out immediately, they can’t go out and offer another kicker because it locks up another scholarship spot that could go to build depth at another position. And if the second kicker stinks, you have wasted two scholarships for multiple years.
It’s why most kickers don’t get a scholarship until they have proven themselves. I think Hayes is on scholarship right now.
Kind of the gamble you take on any player you offer. While that particular position is one you’d prefer to not “lose” a scholarship on, I think the current method of going with walk-on kickers has proven itself to not be effective over the last 6-7 years. Perhaps continuing success would bring a higher caliber walk-on but that’s not guaranteed by any means either. What we do know is that what they’ve done to this point hasnt worked out so you need to try something different unless you’re ok with having no kicking game.
I think a home game is the difference in favor of Beavs when comparing to last year. Also Nolan wasn’t as steady as BG has been. It seems that the team has embraced what it is rather than forcing the issue to attempt to boat race teams in a shootout. BG embodies that approach and won’t make game altering mistakes.
Beavs defense will need to stop the run,
Tackle well on the outside passing in space,
Contain Nix if he is full speed
Prepare for downfield play action and get ints or pass breakups.
The downfield play action will likely be where the refs play a big role in the game by how and when the call interference on either team. I expect the Beavs to play man to man and see how well Nix can throw after 2 weeks of a bad knee. I still think he has a major knee issue but it is being hidden.
Expect the crowd noise will be more electric then Boise St or USC and should be a major factor even for the half stadium.
Martinez is as good as Charbonnet and Beavs Oline will be up to the task. I expect a few fly sweeps and outside runs, perhaps toss sweeps too. My fear is Lindgren goes in outthinking himself and waits 2 possessions to actually try to run the ball because he expects the Ducks to stack the box with 8 guys.
Veiling may have some opportunities down the middle of the field.
The Quacks seem to have a history of running their starting QBs out there despite less than minor injuries. I remember Dennis Dixon trying to play on some type of torn ligaments and it not ending well for him.
I’m just stoked that the civil war is getting more nationally relevant again due to the Beavs improvements.
I mean we beat them 2 years ago but outside of our state it understandably didn’t have big implications.
Since BG’s first game we’ve limited turnovers which is always the most telling stat of a win.
The 3-ish point spread is about right which means 2-3 plays or ref calls will be the difference.
As packed and loud as the usc game was… I can’t WAIT to feel reser this weekend.
From the piece, a discussion for another thread: “There’s little chance this staff stays intact for 2023. That’s a good thing, if OSU hangs onto Smith. Other programs don’t come calling if you’re not doing things right.”
I don’t think Smith has met his goals yet and should stick around for a while. He knows how close this program is to a Rose Bowl.
It will be interesting to see if his thoughts on tenure are more like Chris Petersen, or if he wins big, does he become a wanderer like Erickson and move on to the next challenge. There’s a difference between rebuilding and getting to a major bowl game in about 5 years or so, and rebuilding a foundation and sustaining the program.
If the Beavers win this Saturday, Reser will likely become an even more difficult place to place next season (10-1 last two seasons), and the sense of “program arrving” will may take deeper root. Not to say that stadiums are everything, but if you can create fan loyalty and create a difficult home environment, it seems like a meaningful aspect of the program.
The reporter is talking out of his butt on the speculation that other programs will come calling for Smith. The NFL isn’t coming for Smith either.
Sure for coordinators. Would be nice to see Lindgren take on a head coaching job (he’d get offers at the FCS level for sure). Always need to change out the coordinators every 5 years or so and look for new blood. Bray should stay another year to build out his resume, then he can take over a big program.
Just continue to call it the Civil War with no qualms or hesitation. Institutions can’t control what the fans call the game. Mike Parker and Jim WIlson are not allowed to call it the Civil War because of institutional ties for the media but fans have every right to call it Civil War.
“Civil War” will outlast the temporary faux outrage and eventually return as the name of the game. But fans must continue to call it such, until the Marxist social justice warriors find another topic to feign offense over, to capitulate only invites more outrage and more demands.
Ohiobeav is exactly right. What surprises me is that there are 4 knuckleheads that reacted with a “thumbs down” to his post. I guess even this site has some woke losers……
The professor (from New Hampshire) who gave Canzano a response makes a lot of sense. I find it interesting that no professors at UO or OSU have responded yet. It was a knee-jerk decision made by people caught up in the moment. The reasoning doesn’t even make historical sense, there were obviously two sides to the war. I wish someone had enough balls to just say we’re going back to calling it the Civil War.
Beavs lose key contributors to graduation after looking over the roster. But each guy is in a different area of the team and has complimentary players to backfill.
Biggest loss may be Colletto and Loescher.
Gebbia
Lindsay
Kipper
Sandberg
Anderson
Colletto
Grant
Hardge
Loescher,
Wright
How many of these guys get drafted? Do any underclassmen depart for the draft?
I found it interesting that JS was asked about Musgrave in the presser and I got a sense JS is a bit irritated with that situation. Musgrave’s career at OSU is such a waste. Never really contributed much. Often contributed to tough losses with critical drops, poor blocking, and dumb penalties. To top it off, he quit on his team in his final season. Not someone who deserves to be regarded as a true Beav. Hope he enjoys preparing for the draft during the CW. Wouldn’t be surprised to see his stock drop significantly after NFL teams get a chance to dig into his lack of production and passion for the game.
To be honest, I always thought that Musgrave underachieved and that this season was going to be the one for him to prove himself, but I guess the NFL sees the potential not the college results. Velling has already contributed much more than Musgrave did in his first season.
You’re not wrong. Maybe Musgrave would rather risk it on his potential rather than his actual play. He can be a workout warrior and work on catching everyday. Oh wait…
Let’s see if any coaches turn their tenures into new opportunities for more money somewhere else. Such opportunities and exits for assistant coaches are not necessarily bad for the program, but depending on the situation, it could be similarly viewed.
I like Velling more than Musgrave. Seems more reliable in catching the ball. The decrease in depth is a risk though.
I’ll always wish a former Beaver luck, unless they transfer to the Ducks, but Musgrave isn’t as good as he (or whoever he’s listening to) think he is for reasons mentioned above. I think he’s 5th round talent at best.
OT – Home sick, so listed examples of program progress under Smith.
2-0 against UCLA, with wins in 2019 and 2020, both @ UCLA (and its admittedly empty stadium);
2020- Defeat Stanford, ending a 10-game losing streak, def. again Stanford 2022 (at its admittedly empty stadium);
2020 – Defeat UO, only second time in 13 years.
2021- Won @ USC for first time since 1960, when Cassisus Clay won his first pro fight, “The Magnificent Seven” and “Pyscho” were released, the first US weather satellite was put into orbit, and Beavers shut out USC 14-0.
2021 – Bowl eligible for the first time in 8 years. Lose a forgettable game in an exorbitant stadium.
2022 – defeat WSU, only the second win in 10 years(!);
2022 – Won @ ASU for first since 2009, second since 1969, when…
Cal – making progress against Cal, 4-2 under Smith, 37-39 all time. Beavers have a chance to overtake them in series history. If/when they do, it will likely be the only conference opponent where the Beavers have the all time series advantage(?).
2022 – Running the table for a 3-0 non-conference schedule featuring a respectable slate of BSU (Home), Fresno State (away), and Montana State (DII runner up last year, #3 in country this year). Not a feat common to past coaches.
2022 – Defense is played! Tackling returns! Woohoo! In 2022, the OSU secondary is arguably the best in the PAC and one of the best in the DI.
Increased overall talent level, building real depth, which is critical for long seasons and big bowl aspirations;
Established clear home field advantage recently, with a 10-1 record the past two seasons, and a loud Reser crowd even at a mere 26K this year;
Season win totals since 2018: 2, 5, 2, 7 (bowl eligible), currently at 8, with a chance for 10.
Outstanding needs: QB, DTs, strategic 4th down play calling, and a Rose Bowl victory.
He definitely has the size and speed. He’s on the kickoff coverage team and if you watch him, his hits are the definition of trucking. He leveled a guy at the ASU game.
Um. OSU has only played UCLA once since Smith became coach in 2019. so, they can’t be 2-0 vs them. And this is only year 5 for Smith so there’s no way they have played Cal six times
Thanks, I referenced OSU official site. There are some wonky entries in their schedule and “history.” One year, they listed the CW twice with two different November dates….I was trying to list milestone wins and the ends of losing streaks to other conference foes.
DT’s aren’t a major need anymore. Our DL is a strength. It’s more the edge guys being unable to generate pressure that’s been an issue (though Chatfield has come on recently). Lolohea is good, but he isn’t very fast.
Non seniors who are doing the senior walk on Saturday,
Speights – would be a senior anyway. I don’t know if he’s even a draft prospect, probably at least a mini camp tryout. Even if he doesn’t get drafted, with the USFL and XFL and CFL, there are a lot more opportunities to keep playing. Or he could just be done with it all.
Sharp – He was a mission kid so he’s around 25 years old. Probably just done with football.
Rawls – This is 5th year in the program.
Oladapo – He’s a 5th year player too
Losing Speights and Oladapo will hurt the most. But moving out the covid extended players makes way for the new guys.
The Athletic has a write up on JS and OSU building something special but I can’t get it behind the paywall. Does anyone have a subscription to link it?
It’s November in Oregon, so cold rain is about to become a common sight around here. It snowed the night before. But through the rain and the fog on a recent morning, an image of the towering concrete emerged. An image of the future.
Oregon State imploded the southwest side of Reser Stadium in January. The video was spectacular. The noise was louder than the neighborhood expected. A new grandstand is under construction, set to finish the modernization of the 70-year-old structure in time for next season.
Across from the stadium, athletic director Scott Barnes has a special chair in his office. It’s called a living room box seat, but it feels like sitting in a premium movie theater. It’s the kind of seating one can find in an NFL stadium. Sitting in a living room box at an Oregon State game in the future will cost north of $130,000 per box. Despite the price, nearly every luxury seat, all 400-plus across four levels, is already sold out, spanning from $11,000 per seat up to around $75,000. Barnes says it’ll be the closest luxury seating to the field in all of the Power 5. The structure will also include a student medical center and a student welcome center. That concrete under construction across the street is the future.
In the present, Reser Stadium is two-thirds of a stadium, with a capacity of about 26,000. That has its benefits and drawbacks. The downside is the empty side of the stadium with all that concrete. The upside is that every game has been sold out. Part of that is scarcity. Part of that is the Beavers themselves, in the midst of the program’s best season in a decade.
“The environment is one that people around the conference and beyond are seeing and talking about,” said Barnes, whose Rose Bowl socks stuck out above his feet. “That’s exciting.”
Reser Stadium is under construction this football season. (Soobum Im / USA Today)
That smaller but intimate environment will hit a fever pitch this Saturday for the rivalry game against Oregon. It’s the fifth time both teams enter this game ranked in the AP poll. The Ducks are no longer in the College Football Playoff race, but the Pac-12 championship and the Rose Bowl are still in play. For the Beavers, it’s an opportunity to wreck their rivals’ hopes. More than that, it’s another opportunity to show the country that Oregon State is on the upswing.
For two decades, Oregon has built a brand around the Nike money, the plethora of uniforms, the space-age facilities and the wins. Oregon State is the classic college football in-state rival, just 45 minutes away up Interstate 5, with an underdog mentality. Corvallis has its breweries and nice spots, not populated with many tourists like Eugene. You earn what you make here, and these Beavers have had to earn it.
It’s an era of quick fixes in college football. The majority of Pac-12 schools start a transfer quarterback, including the Ducks and Bo Nix, a former five-star recruit. The Beavers have used multiple QBs this season due to injuries, seven players have thrown a pass and there is a special package for senior quarterback/running back/linebacker Jack Colletto, who plays both ways. It exemplifies the team, and a roster doing whatever is needed. This program was built slowly and steadily over the past five years. Now it’s a Top 25 team. And now it’s beginning to really jump into the NIL game, with outside party Dam Nation becoming the preferred collective of Oregon State athletics earlier this month.
“The type of guys you can get here are all about football, school and being good dudes,” head coach Jonathan Smith said. “You can win with that.”
Along with those socks, Barnes has a Rose Bowl pin in his wallet and a replica of a 1941 Rose Bowl jacket framed in his office. The Beavers haven’t played in the Rose Bowl since 1965, but the goals are the goals.
Smith is more understated. On this day, he wore a normal dark gray sweater. No special team-issued Nike gear or athletic apparel. He doesn’t talk like a typical football coach. As in, he talks like a normal person, asking questions and avoiding most coachspeak.
“He reads a ton and he’s got interests outside of football,” said offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, on staff since 2018.
But Smith can get a point across when he wants. Like the time he wore his 2001 Fiesta Bowl ring to the job interview with Barnes in late 2017.
“Just a subtle reminder that I’d been at the place, I knew the place,” Smith said. “I don’t wear it very often, but I wore it then.”

Smith knows what’s possible here better than anyone. He arrived as a walk-on in 1997, joining a program that reached an FBS-record 28 consecutive losing seasons. He left with that Fiesta Bowl ring and a slew of school records after throwing to receivers like Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. He didn’t plan on having such an accomplished career. Growing up in southern California, he wanted to be a coach. He didn’t have any coaches in the family, he just fell in love with the X’s and O’s.
His grandmother lived in Corvallis at the time, and he felt he could prepare best for a coaching career under Mike Riley, so he walked on at Oregon State. He started a few games as a redshirt freshman, then Riley left for the San Diego Chargers and in came Dennis Erickson, returning to college from the NFL less than a decade removed from winning national championships at Miami (Fla.).
When Erickson walked in, he thought Smith was a team manager.
“I’m 5-10, 175 pounds,” Smith said. “I didn’t look like a typical quarterback.”
Erickson told a wide-eyed Smith and the rest of the Beavers in his first team meeting that they were Rose Bowl material, despite those 28 losing seasons. Two years later, they went 11-1. Smith wasn’t quite that bold upon taking over as coach in 2018 after four years as Washington’s offensive coordinator, but the vision was the same.
“I did feel confident — maybe not as much as coach Erickson because he’d done it at multiple places — but I was confident it was going to take a little time,” Smith said.
Smith took over a team in shambles and paused when describing what he inherited. Riley went to eight bowl games in 12 years in his second stint from 2003 to ’14, but the next head coach, Gary Andersen, resigned six games into the 2018 season with a 1-5 record and 7-23 tenure. He’d left Wisconsin for Corvallis, and then he quit less than three years into it. Barnes, who worked with Andersen at Utah State, called it one of the hardest things he’d encountered in his career. But Barnes maintained that the school would keep investing in football. That was the pitch to candidates. In Smith, he saw someone who knew what it took to win here.
When Smith arrived, he noticed a small team, literally. It needed more size and length at basically every position. But anyone can find size in recruiting. That’s not an edge, especially for a team that is typically near the bottom of the Pac-12 in the recruiting rankings. Coaches needed to find players who could be developed. Lindgren said they emphasized finding multi-sport athletes.
“We took some guys that are 6-5, 215 pounds and now they’re at 255,” Smith said. “That takes time.”
Oregon State went 2-10 in Smith’s first season. The Beavers improved to 5-7 in 2019 and were a last-second loss to Washington State away from a bowl appearance. They slipped to a 2-5 record in the pandemic-impacted 2020 season, though it featured a 41-38 win against the Ducks. Still, not many Power 5 coaches would get more time with a 9-22 record in three years.
“Jonathan said there was patience here, the administration had a vision for this thing,” Lindgren said.
Barnes gave Smith a long leash when he hired him. That allowed Smith to build. He was patient with players and he didn’t fire an assistant through three years.
“Let’s just say what we were, we were one of the worst programs in the Power 5,” Barnes said. “So I was not concerned with the wins over the first few years. I was concerned with the culture changing, the foundation being set, bringing the right staff. He has methodically built this thing.”
The breakthrough arrived last season. The Beavers won at USC for the first time since 1960, ending a 24-game losing streak there, and started 5-2. It was Oregon State’s first winning season in seven years and first winning record in conference play in eight.
But the Beavers lost four of their last six, including games to Cal, Colorado and Utah State in the LA Bowl. Defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar was fired after the loss to Colorado, the first coaching change Smith had made. The stretch was a lesson for everyone.
“I don’t want to say maturity, but a mindset that each week, no matter who you’re playing, you have to play well,” Smith said.
Still, 2021 showed progress, and it continued into the 2022 season. The Beavers beat Boise State and Fresno State to open the year. They lost 17-14 to a USC team now contending for the College Football Playoff. Importantly, they beat the teams they should beat, like Stanford, Colorado, Cal and Arizona State, none of which will play in a bowl game. They broke into the AP poll for the first time since 2013. They enter the Oregon game at 8-3 with two three-point losses. It’s the second eight-win season for the program since 2010.
With that success comes attention. Now, other schools will want to hire Smith’s assistants. And in the transfer portal and NIL era, they’ll want some Oregon State players, too. It’s the nature of the sport now. True freshman running back Damien Martinez has shined with 867 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He’s from Texas. Oregon State coaches won’t say it publicly, but in the world of tampering, every school is worried about losing a rising star player. It’s the new reality.

Oregon State has also seen the other side. Last year, the Beavers were in the mix to land Georgia transfer quarterback JT Daniels. Daniels chose West Virginia instead. Local writer John Canzano reported that Daniels received a sizable NIL package from the people around West Virginia’s collective.
That’s why the aptly named Dam Nation has come around at the perfect time. Founded by former Oregon State associate athletic director Kyle Bjornstad and former Nike executive Dick Oldfield, the organization partnered with Learfield marketing to become Oregon State’s preferred NIL collective. Bjornstad wasn’t familiar with the specifics of the Daniels situation, but everyone knows the role NIL plays in changes and decisions.
“That doesn’t necessarily play into what we’re doing, but it does outline the importance that we need to be in this game,” he said. “We’re going to be and we’re going to be aggressive.”
Along with connecting athletes to businesses, Dam Nation has former Beaver greats like Steven Jackson as ambassadors to connect and consult with active Oregon State players across multiple sports.
The NIL business has been a mad dash in the 17 months since it went into effect. Some collectives have folded or merged into others. NCAA rules have changed and different state laws allow different things. The NCAA now allows schools to encourage fans to donate to the third-party collective so they can pay athletes. Oregon, USC, Arizona State and Washington State have notable collectives in the Pac-12. Now Oregon State is pushing into the space at a key time.
“We wanted to put together a program that is going to catapult Oregon State forward,” Bjornstad said. “Many would say we’re late to the party, but we would argue we didn’t rush and we put together something that will be long-lasting and very beneficial.”
Oregon State has prepared for the future, but this week is all about the Oregon matchup and the game that technically isn’t called the Civil War anymore but is still called the Civil War by everyone in this state.
This is the week when everyone reminds special teams coordinator Jake Cookus about the game of his life. He’s still a legend in the state for his three interceptions of Ducks quarterback Joey Harrington in 2000, the biggest game in the rivalry’s history, with a BCS bid on the line. Josh Line, a high school coach in Eugene, was on that Oregon team, and whenever Cookus comes by to recruit, Line reminds him that Cookus ruined his year.
“I tell the players, ‘I know the film is black and white and it’s not HD, but I did make a couple plays back then,’” Cookus joked.
An Oregon native, Cookus walked on to the team in 1998. In 2016, he passed on full-time jobs to join Oregon State as a quality control assistant to be close to his parents before his father died. When Smith became head coach, he not only kept his former teammate on staff, but he promoted him. Nobody knows better what Oregon State can accomplish in this rivalry.
“It’s the right to live in Oregon and have the bragging rights,” Cookus said. “You’re either a Beaver or a Duck here. It’s even more fun when both teams have something to play for, and that’s this year.”
Damien Martinez rushed for 138 yards at Arizona State last Saturday. (Mark J. Rebilas / USA Today)
The specter of conference realignment also continues to hang over the sport. USC and UCLA are on their way to the Big Ten, and the LA-native Smith hates to see it. The Big 12 has been public about its desire to add some Pac-12 schools. What is the future of the Pac-12? And around these parts, what is the future of the Civil War game? The annual Bedlam rivalry game between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will soon end. Nothing is completely safe.
Barnes expressed confidence in the future of the Pac-12, which should finish its media rights deal by the end of the year, and he has no doubt the future of this game is secure.
“One, I believe we’ll be in the same conference moving forward for a long time,” he said. “Secondly, it’s such a convenient rivalry, 45 minutes away. The history is too rich and strong to not play this game. It’s not even a question.”
Oregon State is prepared for whatever that future holds. The stadium renovation will continue through the winter and spring, and those luxury boxes that cost more than $100,000 will be filled next season. Recruiting has improved. The Beavers had the No. 6 class in the Pac-12 in 2022, their best mark since 2004. The new NIL collective will try to keep that momentum going.
More than anything, Oregon State has a head coach who has seen the mountaintop and knows it’s possible here. He’ll always have the ring to prove it.
Pretty decent piece. Some rehashing of old narratives (I hate the “underdog” narrative).
Probably the best part of it is the amount of “print” space they are giving the program, the positive comments on the facilities for next year, and the relative depth of the article.
Was hoping to see them just a tad higher to close the gap with Utah. The chances of Rose Bowl now up to 0.5%. Need UCLA and UW to lose. Beavs need to destroy Ducks. Utes need to barely squeak by Buffs. That would put Utes in championship game at around 14 with Beavs possibly moving up to 16ish after destroying Ducks. Then need USC to destroy Utes on championship game so Beavs could move past them in CFP ranking and thus getting selected for Rose Bowl. Just saying there’s a chance
Out of curiosity I watched the ESPN CFP rankings show tonight for the first time, ever. Of course, the fact that the Beavs would figure in the dialogue, even if briefly, figured in the calculus, but I was also curious as to SC’s fate. OSU came up in that dialogue as well, as when the chair of the committee was asked to opine on why a two loss LSU team was ranked ahead of a one loss SC team. Basically, LSU’s win over Bama gets more credit than SC beating UCLA and Oregon State.
The show got me thinking about what a twelve team playoff portends, again with an emphasis on OSU’s prospects therein. Notably, there was only one 8 win team in the top 12. K-State. Someone will have to explain why their wins are more impressive that UW, the first team “out” at 13 with a 9-2 record. Every season is different, of course, but tonight’s show is indicative of where OSU needs to be to be in the playoff picture. Specially, at 9 wins going into the Civil War. That’s the number the fan base has to insist on.
Oh, and for the record, I predicted a 7-5 season, and quite happy to be wrong. I never expected the Defense to be this good
Over on OLive, one-year transfer is becoming a legend. All kinds of hyperbole. Did this guy put together a better season than former Heisman winner Marcus Mariota? I honestly don’t know as I haven’t watched their games.
How USC’s Williams has done against other PAC foes:
“Running down his totals in full is the best way to show just how well Williams has been playing since the middle of October. Beginning with a loss to Utah on Oct. 15, Williams has put up some jaw-dropping numbers:
438 yards of total offense and five touchdowns against Utah;
411 passing yards and five touchdowns against Arizona;
398 yards of offense and five scores against California;
268 passing yards and three scores against Colorado;
503 yards of offense and three touchdowns against UCLA.
His overall performance and the Trojans’ success could make Williams the eighth Heisman winner in program history and first since Reggie Bush in 2005.”
Football coaches are starting to sniff around some of the early transfer portal entries.
WR Coach Hynson and Director of Player Personnel Cole Moore have started following All Conference USA WR Grant DuBose on Twitter:
FYI- Eggers has a nice in-depth article about Jaydon Grant on his site. I think he let it slip that Grant’s injury is “internal” unless that is already common knowledge. Sounded vague to me as to whether he will return for the game, but Grant said he wants to be out there.
Nice in-depth piece on Jaydon Grant. Sounds like a real quality person. I loved this bit from his father:
““I’ve always liked Oregon State,” Brian says. “Oregon has more advantages monetarily. Oregon State has had to work harder for what it’s got. Jaydon asked Oregon if he could have a visit with his dad down there. They told him, ‘Well, maybe sometime during the season.’
“After that he said, ‘Let’s visit Oregon State.’ We went there, checked out the stadium, the locker room, met the coach. They took us around campus — man, I had no idea how beautiful the campus is. Nothing against Oregon, but I said, ‘At the end of the day, that’s what a visit looks like.’ ”
All that said, if he’s injured and a potential liability, he shouldn’t play unless the Beavers are comfortably ahead and he gets some 4th quarter snaps. Most important is his health.
Going to the Oregon State – Duke game tomorrow! I am really curious to see how they fare. Duke has kind of been beating up on lowly east coast teams and will be playing a de facto road game. I just hope they understand their identity and don’t get caught up in the bright lights.
Beavs have a greater chance of making the Rose Bowl than keeping it close again Duke. I doubt Beavs will score 50. Could get ugly fast. Duke 78 Beavs 49. Hard to believe Duke is only favored by 18.5. Easy money
I was reading where The Beavs may end up playing Portland St again for their second game in the tourney. Can Big Tink’s pull off a second loss to the Viks in one season after the program had never lost to them in its history?
I know it’s easy to get caught up in the we’re bad, Duke’s way too good for us mentality. But this year’s team plays good defense, plays hard and are much more selfless with the basketball. I am doubting they will get blown out. I believe you will be surprised.
From what I’ve seen in the 4 games so far is that this team is absolutely atrocious shooting the ball, turns the ball over at an alarming clip, and struggles to close out on 3 point shots. I believe the “defense” you’re alluding to has more to do with bad teams not being able to knock down open shots. Duke is athletic and can knock down open shots. This isn’t PSU, Tulsa or Bushnell. That said, I hope you’re right and we’re more competitive than I think we’ll be.
Any word on OSU releasing extra tickets for the Civil War?
Wish they’d find a way to let people sit in that lower section below the press boxes on the construction side. There are going to be people over there already. Just add some extra porto toilets and food carts for vending options.
Doubt it, they already added all the standing room only tickets. I do know that SRO tickets will be emailed to buyers only 1 day before the game. They are trying to prevent scalpers.
If you were buying tickets, I’d bet those ones would go for well under face value the night before or the morning of the game.
Unfortunately because of safety concerns and liability, there’s no way they can open up any of the side under construction. Hoffman is the GC and they are hyper sensitive to safety plus they’d have to get an occupancy permit with approval from various entities include fire Marshall prior to allowing folks to utilize the space. This takes months to coordinate let alone execute. Also, L&I would issue a massive fine and construction would be delayed not to mention the bad press it would receive. No chance they could even consider this.
ESPN has a ridiculous argument between Steven A, Feinbaum and Mad Dog Russo about LSU vs USC for the final spot in the playoffs.
Assuming Georgia is in no matter what, winner of Big10 championship game is in , TCU wins out. So they debate based on USC and LSU winning out but only Russo thinks USC jumps LSU if LSU beats Georgia.
LSU has 2 losses and losses by 27 to Tennessee a month ago.
USC lost at Utah by a point and had some typical PAc12 ref nonsense going against them as well. It would be consistent to have SEC teams get favorable treatment but I don’t see how a 2 loss team would get in when there will be 3-4 1 loss teams on the board and USC would be a power 5 champion. Georgia should be bumped at that point and face the same fate as Clemson or Michigan rather than get the automatic nod…
A lot of nonsense with many games still to be played and just run of the mill ESPN clickbait trash by Steven A….
If USC can’t make it into the CFP this year when so many teams have been knocked out, how can the Beavs ever get close? SEC teams always have a plus 1 loss advantage.
Georgia probably should be bumped if they lose to LSU. Looking at their schedule its pretty terrible actually. Their 2 best wins are the Ducks blowout and Tennessee. That was game 1 for Oregon’s coach and a significant number of transfers. And the shine has come off Tennessee at this point. Other than those games its all cupcakes. That being said I don’t think anyone believes USC is actually better than Georgia.
There’s so much fuckery with that whole system, wasn’t a two loss Ohio State picked over some one loss team? Or was that a two loss Bama over a one loss…Anyway, it’s all a steaming hot mess of nonsense and you’re right, there’s no way the Beavs would every be considered worthy, even if they went undefeated there would be some excuse of why an SEC 2 loss team would be more worthy.
Crazy though that a 2 loss LSU team got to play in(and won) the national championship game in 2007. Prior to playoff selection, but evidence to OJs point.
And they lost to Kentucky and Arkansas that year. Not exactly quality losses
From 247 Sports, any chance this distraction impacts swoosh offense on Saturday?
The quote: “Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham has had discussions with power-brokers at Arizona State about its vacant head coaching job, multiple sources tell 247Sports…”

I’ve not watched UO once this year (can’t stand them), and didn’t realize how productive their offense has been.
The several TD drops this season really hurt OSU’s scoring.
I’m better appreciating how great OSU’s defense has been this year. Even with scores down(I suspect?) in college football, its crazy to think OSU is keeping conference foes to less than 20 PPG and at 100 yards rushing per game.
Throw in the genuine home field advantage, and this is may probably the best CW matchup since Cookus made Joey Harrington cry. Or when Michael Doctor was making house calls at least…
I hope in 2024 when OSU hosts the CW again and Reser is complete, the Beavers are in a similar or better position, with either a seasoned Gulbranson or an electric Chiles in his second season, and Martinez in his third and likely final year before he’s off to the pros. If Reser were complete for this game, it would be LOUD.
Ducks offensive production has centered around Nix be able to run draws and keepers on 3rd downs most of the year. They lean on the little running backs for a while the rpo into ply action or qb keeps. Nix has been able limit his typical int numbers this year which is why they have been so successful. If he isn’t fully healthy, Beavs have a real shot at disrupting the entire offense.
Their offensive numbers are impressive but I think Beavs defense at Reser is much better at home than anything they’ve faced since Georgia in game 1.
Even if he’s reasonably healthy, Bray can scheme for that I think. Might be good to mix up Nix assignments with the likes of Cooper Jr. and Oladapo(?). Players that can cover ground and are sure tacklers.
I know the Beavers don’t get many sacks, but they can cover for long periods of time. USC @ OSU was an incredible game, and one of the most striking things to me was how, despite the time he had from moving around, Williams could not find someone to throw to, even after several+ seconds. That’s unusual. My hope is Nix finds the same challenge, and can be forced into his former pattern of INTs.
This is a great illustration of what the Beav defense is up against. The Ducks have quietly had one of their best rushing attacks ever this season. The Beavs will need to force a couple turnovers otherwise the Ducks will be able to string together first downs and control the clock. That puts a ton of pressure on BG as every offensive possession becomes that much more critical. BG is going to have to have the game of his life since the best way to attack Oregon is with the passing game. Penix proved that a couple weeks ago putting up one of the best QB performances of the year. UW still barely won that game though. Since Beavs are home I don’t think BG needs to play quite at that level but probably at least 80% of it. Does he have it in him?
Agree, no way Neon Deion goes to Boulder for even a 2 year run. They are delusional to think they can lure him out of the southeast. He will be at Auburn or Florida St before he ever sets foot on campus at Colorado.
Beavs coming off two relatively easy wins. Ducks coming off two down to the wire games. Probably makes no difference for a rivalry game in terms of mental prep.
I think Bo Nix will be a full go. A bit of gamesmanship saying he’s day to day. It’s more fun to beat a team at 100% so they have no excuses. Even with limited mobility, Utah only got one sack. Only been sacked twice on the year. Nix is the best QB in the conference this year. He’s the most efficient and adds in the running game element. He’s 3rd in passing TDs and 2nd in rushing TDs in conference play.
Beavs will need a lot of the injured players back. Especially in the secondary where they will be tackling a lot.
I wonder if there is anything to gain from watching the Georgia film. Probably not much.
Bray’s defense produced Williams and Penix’s lowest rated games this year. Rising had an awesome game but circumstances helped a lot there.
Utah’s lead back only rushed for 55 yards last week but Utah still had 156 total on the ground. I’d expect them to take some cheap shots at Martinez.
Last thought – Beavs need to do what they do best to win the game. Run the ball, efficient GB play and tackle well. Otherwise, GB will have to win the game with his arm. That’s a low percentage play. This is what happened last year, Ducks stopped the run game and forced Nolan to win the game. His 39 attempts were the most in a game last year.
Looking back at another well regarded QB’s play, Jake Haener was 29/45 (64.4%), 360 yards, 1 TD, 4 carries for 4 yards, was sacked only once 45 attempts.
Agree on the need for the Beavers to do what they do well, run the ball. I don’t think the Beavers OLine can control the line of scrimmage for the whole game, but if they do it more often than not, Martinez is shifty enough and tough enough to make yards on his own to help out his line.
Concerned also about cheap shots on Martinez. Given that Gebbia took about 1.5 years to get back to normal after the cheap shot in the 2020 CW, and that a Ducks safety was ejected for the second game in a row last week, I think its fair for coach Smith to point that out to the refs pre-game and to watch for it. Some distribution of carries to protect Martinez is probably wise, and let other Beaver RBs punish tacklers. Shannon isn’t big, but he runs angry.
I’m guessing Smith and Lindgren will take shots downfield. WRs need to make it count and not drop passes (looking at you Harrison), BG needs to hit wide open receivers. The simple stuff….@ UW I understood from posters on this board that BG missed 3 likely TD passes(?).
From what he showed last week, Nix wants to release the ball very quickly; likely to minimize chance of taking a hit. He is probably a lot closer to 100% this week so may be more willing to go through progressions but still not likely to be able to run as he’s done all year.
The more often Beavs can deliver a hit, clean of course, the more likely he’ll rush his passes. That’ll lead to opportunities for ints.
Watch for refs to do all they can to discourage any contact with him.
Yeah, anything to force Nix to throw early .
QB hurries have been part of this D, much more so than sacks.
Just keep the thought of being hit in the back of Nix’s mind.
Great piece in Gebbia on Olive. There’s a guy that gets it. Not the best QB in the world but a true leader and a great Beav. Should get a standing O from crowd. Hopefully he get some reps Saturday because the Beavs are up 4 scores in the 4th.
I hope Micheal Mothershed’s crew isn’t in Corvallis this week. It’s important the the officials keep control from the start. This game can get pretty wild if it is obvious that Nix is being protected to a much greater degree than BG.
As mentioned above by ObjCritic, Smith needs to have a talk pre-game with the refs to point out specific examples of the nike pattern of dirty play.
It needs to be said, but we really should be pleased with the job Smith has done with the Beavers football program. This year has been very strong, but you dont get the sense that the program has peaked. They left some wins out there. I think any season where the Beavs can finish in the Top 25 is a good one. And I have to think with a top shelf QB the program could be top 15 easily. Which is remarkable.
Get a decent pre-season ranking and head into conference play 3-0 and who knows. I do think Smith has positioned the program to be a good destination for transfers to come in – particularly skill position players looking for playing time.
Totally agree. When you look at resources and where good football players are at, realistically Oregon State shouldn’t be better than 25 other programs nation wide. Thank goodness for bad cultures and coaching such as Texas A and M, Miami, etc.
If there is a time though to get some better recruits, it’s now because there’s no excuse for them not to be coming. The coaching is there, winning record, etc.
Duke survives 54-51. Beavs had a decent look at a game tieing three. Beavs got screwed with about 12 seconds left and had the Duke player tied up for a jump ball before the timeout was called. It was a possession error OSU.
Beavs lose to Duke 54-51 but with how terrible Duke looked offensively they should have won and by 7-10 at least. Wayne cannot coach offense and it is painful to watch. He’s holding this team back because of it. It’s such an archaic offense and his peers have left him behind. They almost never get any catch and shoot 3s in an era where threes are critical for every top offense in college and the pros. All they get are threes that rely on one of their guards to make a heavily contested one off the dribble. Dashawn Davis shot 18% from three last season and is shooting 70% this year after transferring. Coaching is the problem and it isn’t gonna get better. It’s crazy how 2 years after making it to the elite 8 there’s zero interest in the program
That was the #8 team in the country, settle down. You should be embarrassed by the portland state game, today beavs needed a shot to fall at the end, nothing to hang your head about.
Settle down and be thankful for Tinkle. It could be worse for you if you ever consider changing coaches… Tinkle=Riley
It is a loser perspective to not recognize the core issue of failing does come down to offensive approach for Tinkles entire regime. His success was a result of the athletes in spite of the system.
The non jump ball was a classic program call in favor of Duke. The 3 minute stretch where Duke got to push and shove for multiple offensive rebounds with no fouls or Beavs responding was the turning point in the game.
Tinkle has his faithful but his offensive limitations do hinder the progress of the team.
The team is clearly better than they were last year and defensively look miles better but offensively there’s just no reason for them to be such a horrendous shooting team when they have capable shooters but the philosophy offensively is terrible at best. GT is the best driver on the team but he couldn’t get to the rim cause there’s no spacing and the paint is clogged. Made him look invisible today. They’ll have issues beating any decent teams this season when the coaching staff simply can’t get players good looks. Proud of the players for nearly pulling it off but the offense is going to be rough this season
Yeah, on the “Luck O’ The Beavs” side of things. They had an opponent shot 26.7% from the field and they still LOST the game!!!! It’s so hard being a Beaver fan, but I wouldn’t have it any other way either.
Yep figured they’d get blown out. Beavs hustled and scrapped. Got manhandled on the offensive glass towards the end. Duke keyed in on stopping drives but the ball handlers made some nice plays.
I was at the game and I think what people need to realize is that Duke’s defense was impressive. People complaining about WT’s offense need to realize that was one of the better defenses we will see all year. I actually had the Beavs winning this one. It was clear to me the Beavs are better than advertised and Duke is young, on the road and hadn’t really played anyone outside of Kansas. My pops made a great point leaving the game. He said, the great thing is the Beavers freshman will be back next year whereas with Duke, that might not be the case. I think this is the best batch of freshman Tinkle has brought in not involving coaches kids. Very Understated class. They look above their years in terms of accepting their roles. That’s what made that Elite 8 team. They need to improve their defensive rebounding and ball movement on the perimeter to be great.
If they start losing big time in conference play that’s the thing I would worry about. It’s hard to keep a losing team together and this is the coach who has posted 5-27 and 3-28 records and still somehow has a job.
After pondering and wavering back on forth on this for most of the week…….
I’m calling for a 30-20 UO win.
My reasoning is simple. The Beavs just don’t win these big games very often. This year will be no different.
The ducks will go on to win the PAC-12 title game and knock out any hope of a 2nd NY 6 or CFP for the conference. The Beavs will be relegated to a shitty bowl game in El Paso, LA against an opponent they’ve already beaten or one of the crappy ESPN bowls in Tampa or Dallas. Lucy pulls the football away…….It’s the way of the beaver.
That’s fair based on Beavers’ history. The program HAS been making some milestone wins however.
I had the Beavers winning in my preseason prediction and I am leaning towards tossup now. I’m trying to fine tune my prediction still…Gulbranson has a couple of nice, progressive tune ups recently, and IF he can continue on his improvement trajectory, I think the Beavers can win.
Your defeatist posts have brought good luck, every single week It’sbeen attempted. It’s like some sort of reverse, triple-lindy,, double secret, upside down karmic genius.
This team has consistently bucked old historical trends. I see them winning at home. No reason to think they can’t slow down the run game like they have to every other team.
Platypus Trophy given to winner of Civil War. Oregon is 12-2 (8-6 ATS) vs Beavers. Last time here (‘20) Oregon (-13) retook the lead mid-4Q but then allowed a 4th down TD with :33 left to lose 41- 38. The TD was a QB sneak by backup QB Chance Nolan who was in for the injured starter on one play. The Civil War is the 5th longest rivalry (started 1894) and Beavers have won 2 of the last 3 in Corvallis SU & ATS. Home team has gone 6-1 SU & 4-3 ATS since ’15. Last year Oregon scored all 4 1H possessions and led 24-3 with a 307-114 yd advantage. Oregon State recovered an onside kick and drove 48/6 for a TD to pull to 31-21 with 8:28 left. Oregon drove 75/9 for a TD, Oregon State responded with a 75/12 TD drive with 1:08 left to make the final 38-29. Oregon opened with 14 first downs in the 1H vs Georgia but lost 49-3 then went 8- 0 SU and 7-1 ATS with mostly dominating wins. They were upset by Washington at home and lost QB Nix in the process. Last week they were +2 at home vs Utah and Oregon drove 79/10 for a TD. Utah drove 55/12 for a 38 yd missed FG. Utah drove 21/7 for a 45 yd FG with 1:09 left. Oregon fumbled, and Utah was intercepted the next play. Oregon drove 52/8 for a TD, 14-3. Utah drove 64/14 for a 4&10 conversion at the 33 but on 4&3 at the 11 was stopped on downs with 2:20 left. Oregon drove 77/7 for a 30 yd FG with :18 for a 17-3 halftime score with a 245-134 yd edge. Utah had a 11 yd fumble return TD, intercepted a pass then drove 86/13 for a TD to tie the game at 17-17 with 2:39 left in the 3rd. Utah drove 52/15 for a 41 yd FG with 11:17. Utah drove 49/11 and on 4&2 at the 26 was stopped on downs. Oregon drove 50/3 but was intercepted at the 21 with 5:50 left. Utah drove 22/4 and on 1&10 at the 48 was intercepted at the 42 with 4:15 left. Oregon punted and Utah drove 26/8 to the 50 and on 4&6 was stopped on downs with 1:57 left. Oregon got a FD to run out the clock :00. Oregon State has been a dominant home team going 11-1 SU and 12-0 ATS the last two years. Oregon State has the special team’s edge (#43 vs #85). The Ducks need a win to get to the Pac-12 title game. This one is a pure tossup with Oregon State great at home so take the points with the home dog.

I don’t know if it’s the coaching, program philosophy, or what, but every time I watch a little of Spencer Petras, I wonder how he keeps his job. His career stats are not that impressive even for a “game manager” and have never really improved over the years.
USA! USA! USA! We’re well on the road to becoming a soccer country now. Nice that OSU has a good men’s program, we may be only a few years away from talking about Beav “futbol” on a regular basis.
Now that the Tink’s Beavs we know and love. Down 22-4 to Florida at about midway through the first half. And yes I hope this comment does not age well.
Checked the score online when i got home. And they lost by double digits. Will play the loser of Portland St/West Vagina on Sunday. Real possibility of going 0-3 and finishing in last place of the tournament.
Real confidence booster. I haven’t watched any of their games on TV but have listened a little bit on the radio. Don’t think I’m gonna start paying any more attention any more other than that. Not worth the time.
Graphic released today for the seniors that will be honored tomorrow. Some juniors that we all expected would potentially leave early are on here but there’s an interesting name missing from the list, Luke Musgrave. Perhaps he comes back? Doesn’t really make sense why he wouldn’t participate in senior day if there wasn’t a chance he could leave.
I know there was talk earlier this week about him being a quitter and I could see why people thought that, but if he really does decide to come back for his senior season that either speaks to the severity of his injury, or the fact that he actually does care about his team and wants to put together a great season before he leaves.
As for the game tomorrow, I’m expecting low scoring. It might feel similar to the USC game. QB play wins/loses games every week but it feels 100x more important in this one. How is Nix able to move around? Can BG make a few throws that elevate past the game manager role? Can he protect the football?
The better defense and the home field advantage will be too much to overcome and I got the Beavs winning 21-20.
Where we he go that would offer him both draft stock building and also ample playing time and opportunity? It’s not like he’s been some superstar either, he hasn’t had a ton of huge moments in his career thus far.
I don’t know where he would go but wasn’t he offered NIL money to transfer to Bama? If he’s rated that high on draft boards (I don’t know why he is) then I’m sure he would have interest from programs. I’m just speculating that he could transfer based on the info from “senior” day stuff. Anyways, I don’t really care. Veilling and Overman have been getting it done. Play guys that can play. This team isn’t about one or two guys. Secondary is going to take a hit next year with experience but there are capable guys that have gained experience this year such as Cooper and Thomas. Bring back Julian and that’s a good start.
Worst case scenario, Musgrave didn’t play the rest of the season and rehabbed on OSU’s dime because he’s already arranged an NIL transfer deal with some rich team.
Looks like decent weather at game time tomorrow. Cold, but shouldn’t be rainy. Around low to mid 40’s for the game.
How are things looking on the injury front? Havent been online much lately.
Oregon loses first 2 games of PK85
Oregon State loses first 2 games of PK85
Portland State loses first 2 games of PK85
Oregon State WBB loses it’s 1st game of PK85
U of Portland plays close game vs UNC and beats Villanova.
Pilots might be the best MBB team in the state
Ah yes, forgot about OregonWBB. Pretty poor showing.
I’m going to the MBB Duke/Purdue final and WBB Iowa/UConn final on Sunday. Should be fun watching 4 programs I have no affiliation with.
I am very concerned that’ll all phases go well except BG. If he is deer in the headlights somewhere between Utah/UW games it is a loss.
They need to get through the 1st quarter even of ahead. Ducks are front runners and they need to know it will be a battle. I don’t think the current Ducks roster respects OSU at all. Beavs should be bringing a real focus a poise into this one. No silly penalties, no gift turnovers, no mental mistakes.
Go Beavs for a program win, and the next building block for JS and crew.
I was in school at OSU the same time as Jonathan so I feel like he’s a brother. What I like about the guy is you know behind the calm cool collected image that he has a FUCKIN RAGE inside him. You know that Richard Seigler and Delawrence grant are texting him this morning no fuckin mercy! Fuck the ducks in the fuckin ear hole!
Numero uno!
How has he graduated? He’s only a redshirt freshman!
He is a 3rd year Freshman. So, it’s possible I suppose.
He’s a 3 year Freshman thanks to Covid. Also, he may have taken Summer classes as well to help graduate sooner. Depending upon what field he wants to go into, he can now take easier undergrad or go big and take graduate classes and get a Masters degree.
He enrolled early so that helps. Could have had AP credits coming in from high school.
Plus summer school, it’s very possible. His bio says he was in the national honor society in high school.
Hopefully its a reflection of smarts and work ethic as well as the various other procedural opportunities people listed.
BG was a high academic achiever coming out of high school (NHS) that originally committed to CAL (high academic standards). Not surprising that he’s been able to graduate in three years while likely staying on campus for summer.
All BG’s have that common trait…
Indeed…
You forgot 2003: 8-5 overall 4-4 in conference beat New Mexico in Vegas Bowl
Thank you Ian, yes, I did miss that season.
Riley’s first year back if I remember correctly with a lot of DE recruits.
Opening odds dropped to +3.5. Anyone who got in at +7 got a great deal.
Go Beavs
ya, your prediction was more optimistic.
Yes, Oregon can still get in even if they lose to OSU. If WSU beats Washington
https://twitter.com/johncanzanobft/status/1594370169643896832?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1594370169643896832%7Ctwgr%5E1bc5b46c253a8476acfb56141b750f8889cb7413%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fbennyshouse.com%2Fthread%2F22488%2Fofficial-break-scenarios-title-game
Beavs are gonna have to limit the Ducks’ run game, which averages 230 yards per game
Jermod McCoy is the newest commit. Projected at CB. Beat out Tulane.

I had 8-4, losses vs Fresno, SC, Utah, UW.
Just need that W vs swoosh to come out better than my performance in the Pick’Em.
BTW, thanks again Nice, for putting up that Pick’Em
No prob, i havent been following too closely in recent weeks. Final week this week, and games are now up.
We do have another Thursday game this week, so get your picks in early
Only one I’ve missed so far is UW.
Skyler Thomas comes across very well here, his Momma would be proud. Yes Sir.

A couple wildcards for Saturday: https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1594756489037905920
Sappington is better and not playing for some reason.
Define how Sappington is the better kicker. There’s no clear case one is better than the other.
Both are equal on kickoffs.
I think Hayes is now 1 for 6 from 40 yards and beyond. That should tell Smith all he needs to know.
Yeah, Sappington is 1-2 beyond 40 and hasn’t tried a 50 yarder. Looks like his career long is 40 yds. Not a good situation and could be a problem as we move forward and can continue to be more competitive.
2 isn’t a sample. Neither is 7. But Sappington has looked better (and does have better stats) so you go with him.
Wasn’t ASU’s secondary rated second in the pac just behind the Beavs?
Lol no.
That may have been a statistical anomaly because their run defense sucks.
Refs concern me as well. However not necessarily penalties, it’s the constant spotting errors that can also impact the result.
FWIW, surprised me to see that the zebras have penalized swoosh more than the Beavs and have penalized Beavs opponents more than nike’s.
OSU #76 in yds penalized at 55.9/game; swoosh #93 at 59.2
Opponents: OSU #50 at 55.8 yds/game; swoosh $118 at 40.7
source: https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/stat/opponent-penalty-yards-per-game
Go Beavs.

Hey Angry,
Not sure if you’ve noticed but I haven’t seen you comment on it…the Jets are kind of the Beavs of the NFL this year. Great D, strong run game, well-coached…disaster at QB. Truly just a QB away from elite.
At least BG seems likable haha. Zach Wilson might be blowing up his locker room at the moment, took no responsibility for the offensive trainwreck yesterday.
Jets never should have let Geno Smith go ;)
or Mark Sanchez. He got them within one game of the super bowl twice!
True! Their offense looked functional and even dangerous with Flacco(!) under center at the start of the year. The bar’s incredibly low- they just need a halfway competent game manager.
Assuming Garoppolo is available this offseason and the 9ers don’t re-sign him, that could be a pretty good fit.
I said Wilson was a shit pick so high and got ass rash from angry.
I loved that draft class. All of the “experts” talking about the many can’t miss qbs that would go in the first round. No way you have 5 first round worthy qbs.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. I wasn’t high on Wilson. Here’s the thread when they drafted him. The guy you are thinking of is Trey Lance, a pick that I bashed in this thread, and a pick that has been a disaster for the 49ers as you guys drooled all over him and basically claimed I was nuts.
http://angrybeavs.com/baseball/16170
A season ending injury doesn’t make him a bad pick. Just incredibly unlucky.
When he’s played, he’s been average to bad.
Yeah that game yesterday was embarrassing. The Jets ruined Wilson’s career. He could probably have been good if he sat a few years and then came in to start, but they tried to force him into being the chosen one, and every time the Jets do that it backfires dramatically.
Monday Presser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgrHOBt-f8k
Can tell how pissed off about the FG kicking situation JS is, love they asked him that right at the end when he was tired of answering the same rivalry week question over again over again.
Do we expect the “comeback kid” Hollywood ending for Hayes to win the game on a walk off fg?
Watch Hayes go like 4/4 with all of them being like 45+ yards. lol. Wouldn’t that be fitting?
He was annoyed when BG was brought up as well
Thanks for the link.
Hope it’s not orange glasses, but sounds to me like Colletto and Austin are likely to be available.
Of the two I’d say Austin is the more important (if we can only have one of ’em).
Over Colletto?
It’s close, but yeah. My thinking is that there are enough other guys to pick up parts of The Hammer’s game so that his absence would be less costly than any weakness in the DB crew.
Really want ’em both.
I note Daschel understood that Colletto, Austin, and Morano were the three most likely to play; based on Smith’s presser.
OT:Wiliams for heisman?
“Caleb Williams just won the Heisman
The USC standout QB almost certainly moved to the head of the line with his 503-yard, three-TD performance in the high-stakes victory against archrival UCLA. For the season, he has accounted for 3,796 yards of total offense and 40 touchdowns. He’ll have another chance to impress next week as well in the Trojans’ afore-mentioned spotlight game against Notre Dame. The race isn’t quite over yet though, as Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud will have his opportunity in a high-profile setting against Michigan. But in all honesty, it might be down to those two.”
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2022/11/21/playoff-heisman-races-over-college-football-overreactions-week-12/10743990002/
Beavs probably gave him his toughest game?
I think so. He definitely didn’t look like a heisman QB to me in that game. Credit to Bray and the defense to make a heisman QB look bad.
This bozo is talkin’ smack. Get on him.
https://twitter.com/_JordanFlowers_/status/1594891437120053248
Who?
How far out to lunch is Wilner?…..He says ucks will win by stopping the OSU running game forcing an inadequate Beav QB to try to carry the O.
IMHO he is overlooking the Beavs D, big time!
That’s exactly what they did last year. Stopped Baylor and Colletto and forced Nolan to try to win the game.
It’s pretty much the same offense but with a better defense.
Just can’t let Oregon get up early.
Yep Ducks going to stack the box big time. Like ASU, we may need to come out passing to set up run. If BG plays well and can beat single coverage without TOs, Beavs win big… say 41-24.
BG could make an impact with a few qb keepers to add another element like he did against ASU. There were many 6-8 yard runs available for him.
I’m getting vibes of last year’s game, when most Beaver fans thought Oregon was a sure win.
That’s a reasonable plan.
USC and UW showed that the D can’t necessarily win the game on its own.
Now if the D gets enough TO’s and maybe a pick 6 or something….
I had the same thought. I am getting 35-10 type vibes.
I think OSU needs to throw some early just like the ASU. Spread out the Ucks defense then run the ball.
Watch Martinez highlights against ASU…impressive how he keeps his shoulders square even as he shifts, then runs through contact…
Is Gould healthy for Civil War?
Day to day right now.
What happens if a player leaves? Do they get that scholarship back if they go on scholarship somewhere else?
If a player leaves, the scholarship is open to use.
Go Beavs!
I recall Mariota having a sprained MCL in 2013 yet he kept playing. I’m guessing Nix has a similar condition.
Beavs by 3 even with our poor kicker.
Daschel(?) with a pretty good summary of where the Beavers are right now, how far they’ve come defensively:
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2022/11/time-to-end-debate-on-starting-qb-coaching-staff-on-fire-8-takeaways-from-oregon-states-31-7-win-over-arizona-state.html
From the piece, a discussion for another thread:
“There’s little chance this staff stays intact for 2023.
Agree, I think Smith will be around for a while, it’s guys like Bray, Michalczik, Blue, and others who will go before JS.
Bray and Michalczik should be priorities to lock down and deserve to be the highest paid assistants by a large margin.
Lindgren, eh. He’s fine but I wouldn’t mind some fresh blood.
I thought prior speculation was JS would only leave for a LA job
Smiths not moving his young family to that cesspool.
Doubt Smith leaves. If he goes, hopefully we get someone who can build on this and actually understands statistics.
I’ve actually forgotten the new name of the Civil War. That’s no joke…what the hell did they think they were going to call it again?
Just continue to call it the Civil War with no qualms or hesitation. Institutions can’t control what the fans call the game. Mike Parker and Jim WIlson are not allowed to call it the Civil War because of institutional ties for the media but fans have every right to call it Civil War.
“Civil War” will outlast the temporary faux outrage and eventually return as the name of the game. But fans must continue to call it such, until the Marxist social justice warriors find another topic to feign offense over, to capitulate only invites more outrage and more demands.
There was no outrage and there are no Marxist social justice warriors. Turn the channel and delete your twitter account.
Boilin’ frogs I see
94beav, our resident culture warrior.
Do you recall if players from both teams supported the name change? I know some former Beaver players did.
I seem to recall it was mostly Dennis Dixon leading the charge.
It was Dennis Dixon, and he can fuck his pussy ass back to California.
Civil War.
Ohiobeav is exactly right. What surprises me is that there are 4 knuckleheads that reacted with a “thumbs down” to his post. I guess even this site has some woke losers……
No name for now. Doesn’t seem to be a high priority on either side.
They haven’t actually come up with an official name yet.
If they dither long enough, maybe Civio War won’t be offensive anymore and we can just keep that
It’s the Civil War.
Canzano made a post about it with comment from a history professor.
https://www.johncanzano.com/p/canzano-rivalry-name-game-has-turned?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=795059&post_id=86015196&isFreemail=true&utm_medium=email
It’ll probably be something lame like “The I-5 Fued!”
Though likely with “feud” spelled correctly…heh heh….
Family Feud…and Uncle Phil comes out at kick off and kisses the coaches
Looking like an orange out Saturday?
https://twitter.com/beaverfootball
Beavs lose key contributors to graduation after looking over the roster. But each guy is in a different area of the team and has complimentary players to backfill.
Biggest loss may be Colletto and Loescher.
Gebbia
Lindsay
Kipper
Sandberg
Anderson
Colletto
Grant
Hardge
Loescher,
Wright
How many of these guys get drafted? Do any underclassmen depart for the draft?
Would Speights leave? What else does he have to prove?
I thought Hardge was transferring?
I hope NFL scouts have noticed how good Loescher is. He would be a solid asset for a crappy team that punts all the time!
Your sense, and evaluation, matches mine.
The bottom line is Musgrave is a great talent/NFL player but selfish.
He’s a quitter
Yeah pretty much.
FYI Mike Riley coming on Joe Beaver show after top of hour break. Get your meds and listen in so you can be thankful for JS.
Per the usual every question was a softball.
Cause he’s such a nice guy
Jacoby Ellsbury on the HOF ballot. I don’t think he deserves to get in but cool seeing him nominated.
OT – Home sick, so listed examples of program progress under Smith.
2-0 against UCLA, with wins in 2019 and 2020, both @ UCLA (and its admittedly empty stadium);
2020- Defeat Stanford, ending a 10-game losing streak, def. again Stanford 2022 (at its admittedly empty stadium);
2022 – defeat WSU, only the second win in 10 years(!);
2022 – Won @ ASU for first since 2009, second since 1969, when…
Cal – making progress against Cal, 4-2 under Smith, 37-39 all time.
Increased overall talent level, building real depth, which is critical for long seasons and big bowl aspirations;
Established clear home field advantage recently, with a 10-1 record the past two seasons, and a loud Reser crowd even at a mere 26K this year;
Season win totals since 2018: 2, 5, 2, 7 (bowl eligible), currently at 8, with a chance for 10.
Outstanding needs: QB, DTs, strategic 4th down play calling, and a Rose Bowl victory.
Other examples I’ve left out?
Team needs receivers that can create separation like Hodgins did
I like Bolden
I wonder why Makiya Tongue is taking so long to develop? He has the size that the receiver corp needs.
He definitely has the size and speed. He’s on the kickoff coverage team and if you watch him, his hits are the definition of trucking. He leveled a guy at the ASU game.
Nagging back injury is what I heard
Even just having consistent hands would make a big difference.
Lolohea is good, but he isn’t very fast.
https://twitter.com/angrybeavs/status/1595098140096569344
Damn, hope Oladapo decides to play his final year.
The Athletic has a write up on JS and OSU building something special but I can’t get it behind the paywall. Does anyone have a subscription to link it?
I will paraphrase here…
It’s November in Oregon, so cold rain is about to become a common sight around here.

Jonathan Smith has led Oregon State back into the polls for the first time since 2013. (Joe Nicholson / USA Today)
“We’re not going away,” Smith said.
Thx 4 post
Pretty decent piece. Some rehashing of old narratives (I hate the “underdog” narrative).
Probably the best part of it is the amount of “print” space they are giving the program, the positive comments on the facilities for next year, and the relative depth of the article.
Thanks for posting!
Old narrative also -I once read an interview with Dennis Erickson who said he knew Jonathan Smith was a team quarterback, not a team manager.
Thanks for the help on the article.
Phil Knight basketball tournament in Portland this weekend. Bleah. Hope they don’t get some free press at the CW game.
Beavs ranked #21 in CFP poll this week.

Go Beavs! Real question, why isn’t there a trophy for this game? Maybe Dennis Dixon has a problem with trophies too?
I like the Beavs in this game by 2 scores! All phases of the game are looking good and should correlate to a nice win going into bowl season.
I’m still blown away with this season and it’d be nice to make it great one with a w this weekend. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
There is a trophy…the platypus trophy. But not used for the game, I think the alumni associations hold on to it.
Yep, it’s my avatar.
Fuck Dixon. It the the CW! What a dumb fuck.
I never expected the Defense to be this good
UW’s loss to ASU really hurts them
GO BEAVS!
Over on OLive, one-year transfer is becoming a legend. All kinds of hyperbole. Did this guy put together a better season than former Heisman winner Marcus Mariota? I honestly don’t know as I haven’t watched their games.
No way. Nix has had a good season but Mariota accounted for 57 TD’s in 2014
They’re not even close to the same player.
How USC’s Williams has done against other PAC foes:
“Running down his totals in full is the best way to show just how well Williams has been playing since the middle of October. Beginning with a loss to Utah on Oct. 15, Williams has put up some jaw-dropping numbers:
438 yards of total offense and five touchdowns against Utah;
411 passing yards and five touchdowns against Arizona;
398 yards of offense and five scores against California;
268 passing yards and three scores against Colorado;

May want to hold off wrs until they hit the jackpot on a qb. Unless they are now sold on BG.
Better WRs (if he is in fact better) will make the QBs job easier…there’s probably been at least 5 TD drops this season just off the top of my head.
But yeah, get better QBs too.
FYI- Eggers has a nice in-depth article about Jaydon Grant on his site. I think he let it slip that Grant’s injury is “internal” unless that is already common knowledge. Sounded vague to me as to whether he will return for the game, but Grant said he wants to be out there.
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/seven-years-later-one-great-beaver-says-goodbye
Easy money
I would bet money on the Beavers beating the spread.
DO IT!
Then report back how it worked out.
Duke barely lost to Kansas. I think they will beat up on another lowly team tomorrow. Great time to be on ESPN!!!
Line is now 21.
“I am really curious to see how they fare”
Prepare yourself to be disappointed. This game will probably be over by halftime. Duke will win by 20+ easy.
Well, 2013 NCAA tourney. Tinkle coached U of Montana 34, Syracuse, 81.
So you’re saying we have a chance?
I thought Oregon lost game 1 because they sucked as a program?
At least that’s what people on this site said
No, they just couldn’t hang with the team that won the Natty, that’s all.
They do suck compared to Georgia. It’s all relative.
I wouldn’t go that far haha. A 2 loss team has never made the CFP. Undefeated Pac-12 champs have always gotten in.
*Bold is mine.
https://247sports.com/Article/Arizona-State-football-coaching-search-Kenny-Dillingham-interviews-Oregon-OC-198292888/
If he leaves hopefully their five star qb goes elsewhere too.
Bray versus Dillingham will be a fun chess match on Saturday.
Ducks still have some Civil War tix available for $175.
I dont see any reason why Beaver fams can’t snatch these up.
https://twitter.com/OregonDuckTix/status/1595569209362108417?t=b-x-4-6ZwFgAGnB-XFnmNw&s=19
They know it’s a loss if Nix isn’t fully healthy, so they’d rather stay home then get heckled on the way out again.
Or, they’re $175 ea and one can watch from home with food and drink…
Stats according to PAC 12 site (for eight conference games, hopefully I didn’t introduce errors again):

Go Beavs!!
Based on how many downvotes your comment received, I can safely assume that you are hovering over the target
Deion to the buffs?
Sounds like negotiation leverage to me. He doesn’t strike me as interested in Colorado for the next 4-5 years.
But I’ve been wrong about college football before…
Agree, no way Neon Deion goes to Boulder for even a 2 year run. They are delusional to think they can lure him out of the southeast. He will be at Auburn or Florida St before he ever sets foot on campus at Colorado.
Random game thoughts,
Beavs coming off two relatively easy wins.
Win first down on both sides of the ball
Haener and Penix can recognize coverages and audible better than anyone at the FBS level. Nix doesn’t do that very well.
Beavs are better off trying to knock down a pass or alter throwing lanes or going for the ball when near the QB instead of a hit or sack.
Might have to go with the Fresno game plan. Bend but don’t break. Make them settle for FGs.
Yeah, anything to force Nix to throw early .
QB hurries have been part of this D, much more so than sacks.
Just keep the thought of being hit in the back of Nix’s mind.
Happy Thanksgiving angrybeavs! I’m in Boston where it all began. FTD and stay angry you degenerates.
Had no idea AngryBeavs.com originated in Boston. Fun fact. Take the day to enjoy and appreciate.
Great piece in Gebbia on Olive. There’s a guy that gets it. Not the best QB in the world but a true leader and a great Beav. Should get a standing O from crowd. Hopefully he get some reps Saturday because the Beavs are up 4 scores in the 4th.
Didn’t realize UO offensive coordinator was an ASU grad. Sounds like a serious candidate fir ASU job:
https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/2022/11/oregon-ducks-offensive-coordinator-kenny-dillingham-seems-to-be-the-leader-in-the-clubhouse-to-become-arizona-state-head-coach-per-
Probably wouldn’t be a bad fit. Could have success if he makes good decisions on experienced assistants like JS did.
Mothershed has become the new Jay Stricherz.
Duke favored by 21.5. I think they’ll cover.
Howd that bet go?
It needs to be said, but we really should be pleased with the job Smith has done with the Beavers football program. This year has been very strong, but you dont get the sense that the program has peaked. They left some wins out there. I think any season where the Beavs can finish in the Top 25 is a good one. And I have to think with a top shelf QB the program could be top 15 easily. Which is remarkable.
Get a decent pre-season ranking and head into conference play 3-0 and who knows. I do think Smith has positioned the program to be a good destination for transfers to come in – particularly skill position players looking for playing time.
Does this site need to be changed to Happybeavs?
We still have basketball…
Totally agree. When you look at resources and where good football players are at, realistically Oregon State shouldn’t be better than 25 other programs nation wide. Thank goodness for bad cultures and coaching such as Texas A and M, Miami, etc.
If there is a time though to get some better recruits, it’s now because there’s no excuse for them not to be coming. The coaching is there, winning record, etc.
Beavs beating Duke early in the 2nd. Gigawiggles, you brilliant son of a gun…
Duke survives 54-51. Beavs had a decent look at a game tieing three. Beavs got screwed with about 12 seconds left and had the Duke player tied up for a jump ball before the timeout was called. It was a possession error OSU.
“arrow”
There’s quite a few Beavs vs Duke predictions here that aren’t aging well
Indeed…
I wonder how good duke actually is and how much people judged off of history. Same for Beavs.
Not my point, my point being let the season play out,
Winning 3 games in a season, losing to psu, definitely should put him on the hot seat.
Losing by a bucket to Duke seems like a weird time to bring the complaints.
Tinkle’s teams have always had issues with spacing.
Yeah, on the “Luck O’ The Beavs” side of things. They had an opponent shot 26.7% from the field and they still LOST the game!!!! It’s so hard being a Beaver fan, but I wouldn’t have it any other way either.
Jesus are people stupid about their takes on the basketball team.
100%
Give Tinkle an extension
Gotta give some credit to Gigawiggles. He called them covering.
Didn’t see any of the game so I can’t comment on their play.
I’m not interested in “letting it play out” or moral victories anymore. Got my full of that shit during the Riley era.
Beavs will play Florida at 3pm tomorrow.
Will the beavs freshman be back? There is this thing called the transfer portal where players can leave programs with no penalty and reckless abandon.
If they start losing big time in conference play that’s the thing I would worry about. It’s hard to keep a losing team together and this is the coach who has posted 5-27 and 3-28 records and still somehow has a job.
Wayne Tinkle. The only coach on the face of the earth that can take a team from the elite 8 to a 3 win season and not winning a game in almost a year.
And still have the same job. SMH
I can’t imagine spending Thanksgiving attending any college basketball game, but especially not a Wayne Tinkle coached college basketball game.
Way to be a dick
Mashed potatoes didn’t turn out well?
He’s not wrong
shitty civil war prediction time!
Happy Thanksgiving degenerates
That’s fair based on Beavers’ history. The program HAS been making some milestone wins however.
I had the Beavers winning in my preseason prediction and I am leaning towards tossup now. I’m trying to fine tune my prediction still…Gulbranson has a couple of nice, progressive tune ups recently, and IF he can continue on his improvement trajectory, I think the Beavers can win.
30-20 sounds appropriate. I just don’t see the defense stopping Oregon’s run game.
They also have a good kicker.
Awesome news!
Your defeatist posts have brought good luck, every single week It’sbeen attempted. It’s like some sort of reverse, triple-lindy,, double secret, upside down karmic genius.
Beavs win, so it is spoken, so it shall be done.
What about calling the UW and USC losses?
There is that. Those were BIG games no?
UW? No.
This team has consistently bucked old historical trends. I see them winning at home. No reason to think they can’t slow down the run game like they have to every other team.
Blake Brandel gets the start tonight for the vikings. Is this because they gave up 7 sacks last week to Dallas?
If so not setup for success.
And North Carolina barely survives Portland….
Smith calls attention to Lanning’s aggressiveness…UO has converted 19of 25 4th down attempts.
https://saturdayoutwest.com/oregon-ducks/jonathan-smith-explains-what-separates-dan-lanning-from-past-oregon-coaches/
Wonder if Smith will be extra aggressive on 4th downs to “compensate?”
WEEK 13 PHIL STEELE REPORT

Beavs special teams +2.7? Nike must be horrendous on special teams.
A good punter and a couple punt return tds might do make a team rating look pretty good next to an average one.
Is Gould playing?
I don’t know if it’s the coaching, program philosophy, or what, but every time I watch a little of Spencer Petras, I wonder how he keeps his job. His career stats are not that impressive even for a “game manager” and have never really improved over the years.
The power of a cool name. David Bowie made a career out of it.
More like “prototypical size and arm strength.” Gets ‘em every time.
I’m floating in a most peculiar wayyyy.
Elvis Costello.
USA! USA!
When does baseball season start?
On the plus side, getting rolled at home saves the hassle (and cost) of traveling to be embarrassed.
Apparently, Michael Mothershed is retiring, one last game to screw up today at Cal.
Doesn’t disappoint, forgets to have chains moved.
I can’t believe RBs aren’t taught to put both arms on the ball in traffic. Easily avoidable turnovers killed Cal tonight.
So did the UCLA win eliminate the Leg Humpers from the Possibility of playing in the Pac-12 title game?

Does Musgrave transfer? I saw we offered a highly sought after d2 TE.
BSU’s Taylor Green with a 91-yard TD run…

Looks like decent weather at game time tomorrow. Cold, but shouldn’t be rainy. Around low to mid 40’s for the game.
How are things looking on the injury front? Havent been online much lately.
Ducks lose to sparty. It’s kind of funny that both the beavers and ducks will be in the last place games in a tournament honoring Phil Knight
Lolololololol
Oregon loses first 2 games of PK85
Oregon State loses first 2 games of PK85
Portland State loses first 2 games of PK85
Oregon State WBB loses it’s 1st game of PK85
U of Portland plays close game vs UNC and beats Villanova.
Pilots might be the best MBB team in the state
UO women’s team also lost and is playing in the consolation game.
Gonzaga got whipped by Purdue tonight. Not a very good showing by the northwest teams in their own back yard.
Beavs will play Portland St again Sunday night. Can Tinkle make it a two fer against the Vikings?
My magic 8 ball says “signs point to yes”
Ah yes, forgot about OregonWBB. Pretty poor showing.
I’m going to the MBB Duke/Purdue final and WBB Iowa/UConn final on Sunday. Should be fun watching 4 programs I have no affiliation with.
You going BendBeav?
Thank God the Beavs don’t play Portland this year.
Beavs pass D holds well tomorrow but run defense gives up too much yardage, leading to 4 Oregon FG’s.
Ducks 26-17
It’s gameday!
Wearing orange, voice rested, on the way to the game in a few…on to victory!
