Civil War (Game Thread)

This game will come down to Bo Nix being hobbled a bit, and the Ducks run D. Even before Nix was banged up I thought the Beavs would win this game by at least 7, so I’m upping that to 14. The big wildcard becomes Martinez vs the fairly stout Duck run D. I don’t think they’re anything elite, but they’re pretty good there. Martinez is so shifty, and our line is good, so I think we’ll do enough there to be effect. I think Martinez might look something like 80 yards and 2TDs. Colletto 1TD. Something like that. Then we need Gulbranson to have a 2TD to 1INT ratio.

Get out to the game, and…..go crazy folks, go crazy!

35, 21 Beavs

  1. 35-31 Beavs

Beavs can control T.O.P. with the ground game. Martinez should have another 100+ yard game. As long as we don’t turn the ball over we will win. Gulbranson can not throw picks today. I feel like their D will try to confuse him as much as possible knowing he’s inexperienced. X-Factor will be turn overs for sure. Our D needs to corral Nix as much as possible and get pressure on him all day so our secondary can snag a few.

    Go Beavs!

  2. Dont want to get people all worried, but noticed Aidan Chiles tweeted this morning and his phone tagged his location as SeaTac airport.
Concerning because he is supposed to be at the Civil War today and is supposedly locked in with Oregon State according to a recent Nemec article, but UW is showing renewed interest in Chiles because of some recent QB flips that is causing their current QB commit to be considering an Ohio State flip at the moment.
I really hope OSU didnt set up Chiles flight to arrive at SeaTac vs PDX, and also really hope this doesnt mean Chiles took a detour to UW over the Thanksgiving weekend.

    • Where is the post? He also liked a tweet about oregon state upsetting oregon. Why would he go visit Washington when they play at Washington state? I could be wrong though.

      • I guess it’s also a decent chance OSU went cheap with his flight and didnt book a direct flight for him, so he has a layover in Seattle. That would be pretty lame considering how many Los Angeles area direct flights to PDX exist. But I guess Thanksgiving weekend could make booking flights a litrle tricky

    • Has he visited yet? Would be great for him to see an enthusiastic Reser crowd and the stadium progress…

And a Beaver win for a 9-3 regular season.

    • I Met Chiles and some of his fam a few times this year at Downey games. He is rock solid with the Beavs and enrolling early. He was at the game and literally had a magical 24 hour ride. Winning the CiF championship on Friday night and then seeing that epic civil war win the next night!

  3. My ESPN app on Roku TV is saying the game will be available on that ESPN app. Anyone know if this is true? The espn website says the game is on ABC.

  4. Sure hoping for a concise game plan that relies more on skills and trickery than dumb luck and gambling…but I would relish a W either way. Let’s go Beavs!

There is definitely an opportunity to fuck the Ducks a little on this one, so fingers crossed!!!

    • “Goss Got ‘em” works pretty well; maybe we can start “Reser Ripped ‘em “ today?

Counting on home field advantage and Bray’s D to be the difference.

    • I don’t know about trickery, but there are some fun examples to think of from the season:

      Reverses with Harrison and Bolden(I think they’ve run Bolden on them?);
      John Dunmore double pass;
      Colletto wide open out of the backfield about 15 yards downfield;
      Direct snap to Jam;
Gulbranson running, designed or not; and
Colleto faking the run and throwing for first down.

These last three, particularly Gulbranson running, give the D a lot to think about and potentials to cover.

I expect Martinez and Jam to run hard, and maybe not have as much daylight as usual, but keep running and working at it and they’ll break off some gainers.

  5. Looks like #TPB at Nebraska are going to hire Matt Rhule. Might not be a bad choice, he’s turned around two programs. I’m sure the fan base is still delusional and thinking of national championships again.

      • Yeah, it better work out. The buyout money is flowing like champagne in Lincoln!

“The firings of Bill Callahan, Bo Pelini, and Mike Riley cost more than $16 million combined, and Frost’s buyout alone nearly doubles that total. Roughly $32 million will be paid to the four most recent football coaches, all of whom were fired within one year of receiving a contract extension”

  6. Lee Corso picks the Beavers based on D, run game, home record. Herbestreit calls attention to the job Bray has done then picks Oregon….

  7. Daschel just tweeted:
Oregon State injury updates: everyone is good to go, including S Jaydon Grant, LB Jack Colletto and CB Alex Austin. WR Anthony Gould is only question mark. Going to try.

  8. Go Beavs! Control the line of scrimmage, limit turnovers, and they can win.
I’m keeping an eye on Velling. He’s stepped up, and his roll has gotten bigger and bigger as the season has gone on. That, and Sewell can’t cover TEs.
    35-17 beavs.

  9. This feels like the bowl game last year where our unit that was good all year (defense) suddenly falls apart and looks like a GA team.

  10. After 1 quarter, I’m 50/50. Looks like we are doing right on offense, but struggling to stop the 8 yard runs on defense. Eiither way, second and third quarters are gonna be big.
    GO BEAVS!!!!

  11. Why are us common folk the only ones that see thus? Seriously, maybe the thought is go for the kill shot!?!?! Pound them down and wear them out!!!

  12. Beavs own fault. They didn’t execute. They were short. Yes, the ball could have been moved up a foot but they were always short. The exact spot after that point doesn’t matter that much. They should have been able to convert.

  13. Absolutely unbelievable how you can f*** a call up at this level. That very well could cost us the game because of poor officiating and it’s typical Pac-12 officiating

      • 100% certain the Ducks will win this game based on officiating. Huge momentum changing calls. The fix is in no doubt. Need ducks vs usc in P12 championship game. It is what it is. At least the announcers can see it so not just Beav fans that are scratching their heads.

    • It’s on purpose. What is poor officiating to everyone watching is brilliant officiating for the conference. We know this because they never fix it. Zero improvement.

  14. 10

Lmao. I simply don’t believe what I’m hearing. It was a catch. Ball hit hands first, point of ball hit ground but no movement. Catch by rule

      • 2
        5

Nope, I just can’t stand the conspiratorial BS. Saying it’s rigged, etc. So how does that work, Pac 12 sends memo to the refs about giving certain teams an advantage? Bonuses for bad calls? Secret meeting with the illuminati? If that’s the case why would we watch at all? This is tin foil hat shit and the thinking of completely unserious people.

        • Lmao! Nice redirection, fitting for a duck fan. You clearly stated that you felt both missed calls were correct. Don’t try and act like it was the conspiracy that made you comment. You are clearly a duck fan, and regardless if you think those calls were correct, you are an idiot on top of it.

  15. I hope the officiating defilbrilates the offense for the second half. I have been surprised the TEs have been quiet.

Grit your teeth boys and dig in!!!

  16. Why is it that so many of the duck games come down to officiating and it’s always in the Ducks favor. Two very bad calls that could turn out to be 14 point swings. Do the Pac-12 officials have to answer to anybody because they’re poor every single week

  17. Pretty good game other than turning the ball over twice when we have good field position. Regardless of the bad spot, we should be able to pick up one yard if we had any offensive creativity.

  18. I don’t know why the coaching staff is getting cute on the 4th downplay. How many times has Colletto run that successfully for a yard? Plus he’s a bit taller than Martinez, so I don’t think the hike would have been so high for him. Lindgren outsmarting himself.

  19. 3
    1

Lanning on the last drive: “Like a Thursday practice for us.”

Feels like the Ducks could start to blow it open in the third. Gulbranson likely unlikely to be able to turn it on.

Both coaches agressive. I thought Smith should have went for 3 with Atticus so that you don’t end that great defensive stand with nothing.

  20. 4
    1

    Recapping the refs/replay officials:
    – Ducks first TD, Cota never once had possession of the ball and the only player who did possess it at any point was Wright and it’s ruled TD Oregon and held up on review.
    – Egregious bad spot and CONFIRMED
    – Looked like an incomplete pass on final drive and not even reviewed.
Beavers are getting all time hosed.

      • I don’t either. That ball wasn’t being controlled when he hit the ground. If you can not control a ball when hitting the ground in the end zone and can then roll over then control it?

As I stated. Apparently I don’t what is or isn’t a catch anymore. Seen too many rule interpretations go both ways.

        I guess I’m stupid

        • The ball never touched the ground. Wright had the ball ripped away from him and never got it back.

The spot was egregious. Martinez made the line to gain on 3rd down. Reminds me of that horrendous spot from the 2020 UW game

      • Definitely have to control it unless you’re Oregon and playing for a conference title game berth. Then the ball has to be touching your body at some point and then it’s a TD. Just had to know the worst PAC-12 crew would come to Corvallis for this one

    • 1
      2

      – Apparently you don’t understand the rule.
      – Spot was bad by the length of the football. Confirmed was that it was short of the 4, not that the spot was literally perfect.
      – An extreme slow mo replay was not provided but it looked to me like hands were underneath. Possibly could have been overturned on challenge if they did get super slo mo, but again it’s their own fault for challenging the spot. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with the misunderstanding of rules on here. The only question was about making 1st down or not.

      • You apparently are taking crazy pills lol. Read what you wrote.

        – You said the spot was wrong and apparently that doesn’t matter. You act like you have to get the first down to challenge a spot. The Beavs lost a challenge they should have won regardless if they really got the first or not.

        – The ball clearly hit the ground. I didn’t need a slow-mo replay to see that. They should have still had a challenge at that point. So the impact of the missed calls is significant. But keep taking your green and yellow pills fella.

  21. 4
    4

Smith should have elected to kick on 4th and 1, regardless whether Martinez made the line to gain.

It’s really simple. Low scoring game, take the points. Deja vu

  22. Halftime and only down 14-10.

Defense has done admirable. But giving up that 95 yard drive was reminiscent of the END of the UW game, no?

The defense cannot do everything. Offense NEEDS to help them out.

That throw by Gulbranson for a pick was awful. Right after the punt block. Poor decision. He should have run it for a positive gain. Can’t force it there.

Both teams and coaches have made errors going for it on 4th down. Take the damn points. Especially in a close game. I don’t understand this. Would you rather be down 14-10 or 14-13. Hindsight is 20/20 though. Because the game could be tied 10-10 or you’re up 13-7. Or not.

This first series to start the 3rd quarter is IMPORTANT. Need a stop or hold them to a FG at most.

I am not confident Gulbranson can win this game with his arm.

  23. Sad thing is we have a very complete football team except we do not have a quarterback. Also our kicker still is questionable but if you don’t have a quarterback at this level it’s hard to beat good teams.

  24. Refs ruined this game. Gulbranson put the cherry on top. But refs set the tone with that 14 point swing they were responsible for. I’m not sure how much more pac reffing I can take.

  25. 1
    1

Game is far from over but will be if we continue to pass the ball. This is how we’ve lost all our games this year. Went away from the run when avg 5.4 ypc, that’s just silly.

  26. FFS it’s not game guys. The defense is playing well. They’ve come back from worse than this plus they’re at home. I wonder how many times its been said the game is over and then they’ve won?

  27. This feels a little similar to the Utah game where QB just makes horrid throw after throw and eventually the defense just packs it in after another deflating pick. If this coaching staff doesn’t get in a grad transfer QB, they failed

  28. Maybe get Martinez a 1,000 yards, burn clock, slow the bleeding?

Now we’ll have to hear about Nix’s “gutty” return from injury, and how he’s a Duck legend…

    • You know granted, UO gave up 40+ to WSU, but Oregon came back and won it. My cousins, “die hard Duck fans,” left in the 3rd because it was over.

And yet we have no sense that Oregon State can play through and pull out a comeback win today.

  29. My worst fear was falling behind. That’s why that call was so frustrating. Changed the game and forced Beavs to play a game that relies on BG. That said, after we forced a 3 and out on 1st possession of 2nd half, coaches had a chance to stick to our strength but instead came out passing. BG is so bad that it only took 1 pass. We’re going to lose this game because a game changing call and atrocious QB play, plus coaching hasn’t done much to help. Better team is going to win but we had a chance to win this game

  30. “That said, after we forced a 3 and out on 1st possession of 2nd half, coaches had a chance to stick to our strength but instead came out passing.”

    SO frustrating…

  31. OMG. Just checking back in…haven’t watched since Ducks first hit 28…

I should probably stop watching so you all can enjoy a victory?!?

  32. 1
    2

Unreal. Was going to say the Beavs have at least a chance if they can get it to 10 with 10 minutes left. They’re leading with 8:11!

  33. Maybe the interceptions will help us win this game. Forced coaches to run. We’d have 100 points if we just did that the whole game!

    • 1
      2

Doesn’t every coach know that? Brain rot via “the sheet” has infested the game.

Smith made an equally bad decision that only a timeout saved him from himself.

  34. I know I’m watching this game as a beaver fan but can’t everybody see how bad the officiating is and how favorable it is to the Ducks

  35. 21

    I have no words.

Other than I suck and my predictions are garbage.

That had to be the greatest comeback of all time in the civil war.

    Legendary.

      • Oregon’s coach called in the run 4 times in a row… it boggles the mind.

Defense, special teams major contributions to facilitate running attack in 2nd half. With several in game injuries to RB unit & loss of starting center

Someone better be buying several dinners for that OL.

    • In ‘71 in Eugene, Beavs were down 13 points going into the 4th quarter and won 30-29 with two long drives for TD’s engineered by 2nd stringer Jim Kilmartin. Beavs ran a full house T offense at the time, and the drives were eerily similar to those today; pretty much run only. The last TD was on a 3rd and goal play from the 6, and Kilmartin pitched to Billy Carlquist who waltzed in behind a couple of key blocks. That was one of the great comebacks and it was on the road.

    • As I did in the last thread, I will thank you…your punk ass defeatist predictions are the stuff legends are made of, you, good sir, single hhandedly, are responsible for this win…Huzzah!

  36. It is crazy to be able to win without any semblance of a QB. Like what if they just had a Mannion level QB? Team would probably rival the Ochocinco team as greatest ever

  37. 5
    1

    Not gonna defend myself here…..

Gulbranson. 6 of 13 for 60 yards and 2 picks.

Does that sound like a game winning QB?

No. Dan Lanning is just as big of a degenerate gambler as JS.

Just take the fucking points already.

This is what happens when you overthink shit.

    • Both coaches seem to be stubborn Lee aggressive on fourth down.

If Lindgren leaves, maybe the next offensive coordinator can have an moderating influence on Smith.

  38. 17

I thought Tanner Miller was too small (6’1″) to play the OL at this level, but he more than held his own today after Levengood went down. He seemed to be continually blocking at the second level and I don’t remember him and GB having a single bad exchange. He did have that one high snap to Martinez on the 4th down, but that seemed like kind of a difficult situation to put him in. He was a real unsung hero today.

  39. USC will probably end up in the CFP now. Will be very interesting to see how they do against that level of competition. It will be the ultimate measuring stick for how much potential the Beavs actually had this year, since they basically outplayed USC but failed to get the W.

  40. 2
    11

Let’s not lie to ourselves here.

    To wit…..

Nix passed for 327 yards. Oregon did not turn the ball over, but did have a punt blocked. Which immediately resulted in a turnover off a shitty throw by Gulbranson.

Gulbranson completed just 6 passes for 60 yards and threw 2 picks.

The reason the Beavs won this game? Lanning is even more of a degerate gambler than Smith.

The ducks were 0/5 on 4th down. And instead of punting or attempting a FG.

    WTF?

I’m not complaining but Lanning overthought and out gambled JS and lost.

    Rookie coach, rookie mistakes.

Ask yourself. Oregon was up 31-10 late in the 3rd quarter. And lost. Was it anything OSU did?

    • 16
      1

“Ask yourself. Oregon was up 31-10 late in the 3rd quarter. And lost. Was it anything OSU did?”
Yes we ran the ball even when oregon stack the box. We asked for it all season, it was almost unstoppable.

      • You’re forgetting the ducks went for it on 4th down. Three times during that stretch. And converted zero.

Look I’m glad OSU won. And yes they ran the ball very effectively in the 4th quarter. But it’s naive to think that those decisions by Lanning had nothing to do with it.

Beavs were more lucky than good today.

    • 9
      1

Absolutely. The run game kept picking up above average yardage and the D got huge stops when it counted. Nike gave us some golden opportunities, but good teams take advantage of those and that’s what we did.

    • 1
      1

Two gamblers going toe to toe w/ Kenny Rogers in the background. Lanning clearly needs to learn, similar to JS, that you do not go for it in your half of the field — fold the hand and live to gamble another day. Hopefully it takes Lanning 3+ years to realize this.

      • Why were they up 31-10? Did the ducks actually do anything or did they just wait for BG to throw ints and Harrison to fumble. Both teams were reckless at times. Interesting game.

  41. Weird shit happens in college football every weekend, that’s what makes it fun to watch. I will say that the one thing OSU did do was NOT abandon the run despite being down 31-10. Smith/Lindgren were smart enough to know that Gulbranson was shot as a passer.

  42. Am I crazy or could the Beavs be a WSU Apple Cup win and USC Pac-12 Title Game win from being in the Rose Bowl? The CW victory probably catapults OSU into about the top 15. If UW loses to WSU that’s pretty bad and they will drop out. Oregon will drop down a fair amount as well now, and if WSU wins they actually will still play USC in the P12 Championship. I don’t see them winning with a hobbled Nix and an additional loss will drop them totally out of it. The issue is that Utah will may still be ranked higher in the CFP rankings but it should be very close. Any way OSU passes them? The Rose Bowl could still pick OSU even if they are ranked slightly lower than Utah if they feel it makes for the best matchup/story. There may be a real chance for this.

      • Yeah, dang you are probably right that there isn’t a way to pass Utah. Also the head to head was an L so it would be tough to justify taking OSU over them. Utah is just so blah though, I think you could really make the argument that OSU would be better for the game itself. When you are talking about teams ranked in the mid-teens I’m not sure any of them individually really “earned” a trip more than the others.

  43. Texas A&M leading LSU in the 3rd quarter 24-17. Despite being obscenely overpaid, I like Jimbo as a personality and I hate fat-ass red-faced Brian Kelly. Would like to see A&M end the nonsense of a two-loss SEC team making the playoffs.

  44. Immediately after the game, the news broke that Dillingham is expected to leave Nike for ASU.

Deion Sanders offered the CU job. Anyone think he takes it?

  45. 6
    4

Based on the stats, the Beavs had no business winning that game. We can thank Lanning for trying to go for it on 4th five times, and thank our defense for stopping them all five times. That’s five turnovers.

  46. In the Beavs last 5 drives, they had 0 passes, ran for 149 yards, and had 4 TD’s. In the immortal words of Dee Andros, “When you pass the ball, three things can happen and two of them are bad.”

      • 10

        This^^^
Not just running back depth but roster depth at major positions- Oline, TE, linebackers, secondary and even qb… hard to argue with 6-1(?) career record for BG.

This season has run the gamut of emotions for me. JS has another program landmark win.

I hope Chiles is the last piece of the puzzle and the rest of the roster continues on the same trajectory.

Incredible comeback, enjoying the memories of smug ducks, players, coaches and fans, having their hearts ripped out by Beav 4th string running backs , and a beat up oline that actually care about each other.

Ducks reliance on NIL talent at the expense of team chemistry and team first will forever be their fatal flaw. Landing believes his own press clippings as much as Christofool did.

Beavs have some great upper class men leaders and the challenge will be finding the next guys to lead in similar ways. A team that is easy to like.

PS thank you to Brian Lindgren for continuing to call run after run. It is possible that defenses get tired of trying to shed blocks and tackle great running backs. Please note this for future game plans…

I’ll play along and hope for Rose Bowl by some miracle, expect Sun bowl and be pleasantly surprised by a Holiday Bowl.

        • 6
          2

I would not thank Lindgren as it looked like he wanted to go gun slinger with BG at the beginning. The two interceptions forced his hand to run the damn ball. We all thought the interceptions were the nail in the coffin but it lead to having to run the ball which won this game.

    • Sounds like Gilmore came up with that phrase pre-game and became obsessed with it during the game. Very annoying after the second time used.

          • If they finished it off with a win over USC in Vegas then they would for sure. No argument against a 1 loss P12 champ at this point.

          • I mentioned earlier that it will be interesting to see how USC does against that competition since the Beavs pretty much outplayed them. I think they (and by proxy the Beavs) would probably get blown out but hard to say. Doesn’t feel like there are any truly great teams this year.

          • 12

So being 4th is special? Then I suppose 7 wins is a good year. Seems like Riley all over again.

A chant of we’re number 4 doesn’t seem so special.

            Good team -good season.

Aspire to be the best. Set high goals.

        • 9-3 is a very respectable season, with two losses to ranked teams by 3 points each.

We’ve all agreed OSU was a QB away from a speicial season, but this was a damn good season, better than the last, and progress.

And the Beavers won with defense, which is rare anymore.

USC, UW, UO, all with WAY more resources, “higher recruiting rankings,” transfer QBs…

OSU should be right around #15-18 after this.

  47. 11
    2

Rewatched game. OL was crazy good all game. BG is garbage. JS is lucky. Lanning is an idiot. Bray made great adjustments and his play call at goal line was perfect. Special teams gets game ball

    • “OL was crazy good all game. ”

UO has plenty of highly-rated line recruits from Cristobal days. What OSU did, with even back ups like Miller, was so impressive.

That’s a “throwback” game. 6+ yards per carry and a cloud of recycled rubber pellets…

  48. 6
    1

Smith has to find a QB to take the team to the next level (I’m talking championships). Wazzu and U-Dub are shit on defense against both these QBs tonight. I wonder if Chiles can play as a freshman.

    • I hope he can! Show up early, then by fall, play, lean on RB depth and D, then by last third of season be throwing the ball at a competent level.

    • I did hear Chiles is enrolling in January. Does smith have the guts to give him the starting roll next year? With the running backs they will have you just need a qb that doesn’t make mistakes and throws the ball 15 times a game.

  49. 12

Fun game to be at. The teams play actually got the crowd going more than the other way around. Nice to finish the game and still have time to enjoy it rather than it being midnight. Smith and his staff are amazing motivators. And the team kept encouraging each other. Time to go bowling.

  50. Gets tiring hearing talking heads speak of “Ducks collapse” without giving Beavs any credit. Situation is more balanced.

At least the ucks beat reporter has the honesty to point out, “Oregon Ducks have no answer for Oregon State run game, allow season-high 268 rushing yards and 5 TDs”

Also says this of uck thug DJ Johnson: “Told incident was reported to OSU Dept. of Public Safety by a third party, not the fan who was hit or Oregon State football or athletics. May be Monday until more is known about any legal ramifications.

    • It’s crazy how much the floodgates opened in the second half. First half was okay, but not great. Combined with the bad passing it all looked very uninspiring. Then all of a sudden a switch was flipped and they absolutely bulldozed the Ducks. Football is such a game of energy surges.

    • There’s a big difference between leaving plays on the field and just taking the game over

If Gulbranson misses three open receivers for likely TD passes (@ UW), that’s the right play calls, and players put in the right positions, and a player NOT making plays.

If you run the ball at 6+ yards per carry for 5 drives and don’t throw a pass, that’s just taking the fucking game over and taking the victory.

    • 2
      1

Well, as much as the ducks collapsed the beavers did the same there in the third quarter. Once they stopped handing the ball over to the ducks they had a chance ce to score points and make the comeback.

  51. 5
    1

Can we all accept that we are the new Stanford!?!? Let’s embrace it, and beat the crap out of people on offense with 19-ish consecutive runs. Then have a defense that plays with their hair on fire. Rinse and repeat.

  52. 13

No one needs to eat crow. Anyone in the 3rd quarter was ready to call it over. I had to take my daughter (OSU grad) to the airport at that point and said we had an 8% chance of winning, but when you get through security, go upstairs because they’ll have the game on just in case. Got home and started up the DVR from the point we left it all set to watch them get hammered.

If you’ve ever played on the O line, this is the game you dream of. We’re going to run it every play and jam it down you’re throat. The better team is the one who has the baddest mother fuckers in the trench. Tonight that was Oregon State

  53. I was streaming the game on my phone from Deer Camp, at 31-10 the internet went down, I was woken up at 12:30 cst from text messages from friends when the internet came back on. Sorry I missed it but so glad we won

  54. Colletto’s comments about “scoreless game” and being faithful because he received a scholarship….those kind of sentiments don’t ALWAYS overcome pure talent on the opposing side, but if you have a foundation of character guys like that, you have a team that can (obviously) persevere and one worth supporting.

  55. We got another week before the bowl game destination is known. Lots can happen.

Here’s the only thing that IS known. USC or Utah will NOT be in the Vegas Bowl.

Hoping for San Diego and the Holiday Bowl.

  56. End of season PFF rankings:

    Offense:
-Gulbranson finishes third from bottom as the worst passer in the conference, only ahead of Ward and Shrout. Nolan finished as #32 passer in the country and #3 in the PAC (ahead of everyone but Williams and Penix).
-Martinez finishes as #15 runner in the country (but loses some points for poor pass blocking and receiving)
-Coletto finishes as #3 FB in the country, as well as the highest rated defensive player AND ST player on the team
-Bolden finishes as #10 WR in the PAC
-Velling finishes as #7 TE in the PAC, #4 receiving TE. His final overall rating was better than any full season Musgrave has had.
-Levengood finishes as #11 C in the country, #3 in the PAC
-Bloomfield finishes as #13 G in the country
-Fuaga and Gray finsh as #12 and #13 T’s in the country

    Defense:
-Austin finishes as #9 CB in the PAC
-Grant and Oladapo finish #4 and #5 S in the PAC
    -LB performance was rough…
-Rawls and Hodgins finish #7 and #8 in the PAC at DT. Not bad for an historic position of weakness
-Chatfield finishes as the #6 edge rusher in the PAC

    ST:
-Hayes and Sappington finish as worst and second worst K’s in the PAC, even behind all the guys who only came in and kicked once or twice as emergency XP/FG kickers.
-Loecher finishes as #3 P in the PAC

Overall, despite early season shakiness, the OL still finished as one of the country’s top 3 units and definitely led the way this season (along with Martinez). Hard to imagine our offense being worse next year, and with a real passing attack, it could be much better. The coaches clearly aren’t convinced by BG and it seems like either Nolan retires or BG transfers. I can’t see a situation where they tell Nolan that Gulbranson is their guy if Nolan is healthy enough to play. Either way, we need some additional competition in the QB room. Chiles will help, but a transfer would, too.

I’d love to bring in Clay Millen from CSU. We chose Vidlak over him, but we were his top choice at one point. CSU is going nowhere, but he had himself a pretty good freshman season on a bad team. He came on strong in the final four games of the season against some of the conference’s best defenses.

Defensive losses are going to be the hardest to replace. In most spots, we have some high potential recruits that should move up to fill the gaps. CB looks like the biggest question mark. Hopefully MMD can come in and make a difference as an edge rusher next year. We need more game breaking plays from that spot.

Nowhere to go but up for the kicking game.

      • Yes, there are some volume considerations. It’s based on performance relative to the situation and the comparison is versus other kickers. He missed an XP and a FG under 40 yards, which both “should” have been made.

        • It’s not fair to judge a kicker on 7 kicks, 5 of which he made. And when he looked mostly good. Jury is out, but he looked pretty solid.

          • He had a poor percentage on kicks over 30 yards (yes, it’s a small sample size). I think K is like QB where we need more competition.

  57. 6

I doubt Stanford is going to find a HC who can do more with less than Shaw did. That’s pretty big for next year (though I haven’t looked if we play them). Harbaugh was an anomaly. Shaw was a guy they could have legit kept for decades, and I think the academic standards are probably the ultimate factor there that will prevent them from ever having anything more than a few good seasons.

  58. Chiles is a 4-star dual threat QB ranked 17th in the nation. Here’s his film. I really like the passes around 1:07. Those are darts. He’s listed as dual threat, but he seems pretty lean to be running much at the next level. Seems to have good vision as a runner, though.

    https://www.hudl.com/profile/6640759/Aidan-Chiles

This guy has to start next year. There’s no way we have a better option other than maybe Nolan, but I expect he might transfer. I don’t see Chiles reneging on his commitment unless maybe we lose some coaches, but he’s probably signing to play for Smith more than any of the other guys anyway.

    • I don’t see any passes to secondary receivers, though. If his first read isn’t there, he runs. It’s going to take some time for him to become a more dangerous passer.

I could see a really good offense for next year that’s run heavy, uses Chiles’s legs, and occasionally some simpler passing plays. He’s going to have some growing pains, but the risk-reward setup is better than sticking with Gulbranson.

    • Dude throws lasers.

We’ll see how fast he can learn the playbook. OSU’s non conference is pretty easy next year so he could play four games then redshirt if he doesn’t get the starting job.

    • The play for next year has to be getting a veteran transfer. There can’t be many better transfer destinations than OSU right now. Vast majority aren’t ready year one except for the elite tier of 5-stars.

    • He would have to be an early enrollee for him to have a chance. I just think there will be way too many growing pains for a team that has a shot at winning the conference next year. Definitely need to pick up a big time transfer over that option.

  59. “Colletto’s comments about “scoreless game” and being faithful because he received a scholarship….those kind of sentiments don’t ALWAYS overcome pure talent on the opposing side, but if you have a foundation of character guys like that, you have a team that can (obviously) persevere and one worth supporting.”………ObjCritic up above.

So easy (yes, sometimes frustrating too) to support OSU sports.

Flash and dash, one and done, spend Phil’s money, buy the best, 5 stars,,,,,,,,,doesn’t produce the solid core we have in the Beavs.

    Example:
“Kenny Dillingham was on a Cessna Citation V from Corvallis Municipal Airport to Sky Harbor shortly after Oregon-Oregon State game ended. ” per Matt Phrem.

    GO BEAVS!

  60. Any chance Stanford comes after Smith?
Biggest risk this offseason besides the QB position is the high probability some teams are going to try and poach Smith and/or Bray. I guess that is where the lifetime contracts help with job security vs quick payday, but is it enough? Dont want to lose your coaches right when its time to unveil the new stadium.

    • Other schools will be interested in Smith but that is the number one reason he was hired in the first place. Far better chance that he stays after having success than any other possible hire. I would be surprised if Smith left. Feels like a college football version of Mark Few, where he doesn’t see it the same way as most do that the grass (and money) is greener elsewhere. The guy just doesn’t have an ego. His style and demeanor also isn’t a great fit for the biggest and most glamourous programs imo, so I doubt he will get a godfather, can’t possibly pass this up offer from a major program. Could be wrong, but if Smith doesn’t stay nobody ever will.

        • 5
          2

Mike Riley was a twat behind a smile from day 1. His first tenure/bail showed anyone with a brain everything they needed to know about that clown.

          • I thought Riley showed his true colors when he pouted after BDC asked him to make staff changes (and then somehow got the Nebraksa job) and then when the same thing happened at Nebraska he shit-canned Banker and didn’t have the balls to do it in person.

          • Yeah I think Smith is a different case than Riley. Could be wrong of course. The other thing to remember is that the vast majority of programs are not really better (or at least drastically better) destinations than OSU. There are a fair amount that would offer more money, but when you already are earning millions in Corvallis, how much more do you really need? Let’s do a little hypothetical exercise with a list of programs that could pursue Smith at some point in the future from various conferences (This is completely made up and for illustration purposes only): Stanford, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Virginia Tech. All of these programs would offer more money and are more respected nationally. Are these really can’t pass up destinations though compared to staying and thriving in Corvallis? I just don’t think so. The only no-brainer Schools for Smith to leave for that I think would ever consider him are Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Texas. Don’t see him ever fitting in at USC or the deep south SEC schools.

      • The reason he was hired was partially because the list of candidates was unimpressive after GA tanked the program. “Not ready to be a HC” was the big concern about JS and you can bet other schools felt the same way. AB sentiment on the hire was lukewarm at the time because he was unproven and the collective fear was he was the easy choice rather than the best choice. Just goes to show you don’t always need to go for the established candidate (ala GA).

Of course his fondness for the school was important, too. He’s a SoCal guy, and I doubt he leaves for a slightly better position elsewhere. The only jobs that would make sense would be one of the incredibly well resourced programs. It’s going to take more than one good season to land him on their lists.

    • 3
      1

Smith likes raising his family in Corvallis. I can definitely see him looking elsewhere in about 10 years or so, or sooner if he feels like OSU isn’t giving him the financial support for his staff.

Barnes needs to find a way to get raises for the assistants.

      • 5
        1

100% this. OSU can’t afford to exploit his loyalty and assume he won’t leave no matter what. They need to keep up with the market rate for him and his assistants, which probably means allocating a higher percentage of the School’s budget to football than they would prefer. It’s worth it though if he really is going to consistently be in the top half of the conference. Winning football is directly correlated with a school’s national exposure and bringing in enrollment from out of state. I would be surprised if OSU was short sighted enough to try and nickel and dime.

  61. How great was it that:

    1) OSU’s patient teammates delivered when given the chance? The running back depth is significant, with an all conference talent at the top in Martinez, but Newell made the most of his opportunities after having to sit most of the season. I’m sure it must be tempting to transfer when you’ve got his ability, and have Martinez, Griffen, and Fenwick in front of you taking up all the carries. I hope this guy sticks around. He and Griffen both offer nice bursts to compliment Martinez.

    2) Jaydon Grant made the 1 on 1, open field tackle of Nix on his fourth down rushing attempt? A walk-on who earned a scholarship and is loyal to the program tackles the 1-and-done transfer on a key play.

    • The Grant play may have saved the game and after it was made was probably the knockout blow. Lanning took alot of heat for going for that 4th and 1 but I kind of don’t blame him with they way their punt unit was playing and defense was getting gashed. Only way to win was probably for the offense to keep the ball. Grant shut them down and at that point the writing was on the wall.

This team needs a new QB coach. Chiles has massive potential but I have zero confidence in Lindgren’s ability to develop him properly.

    • 10

Really? He turned Luton into a NFL QB and turned
Nolan into an all-conference player. You can’t base his coaching ability on thrusting a middling recruit freshman into the mix mid-season. It’s Lindgren’s fault we don’t have more talent in the QB room, though.

Lindgren has his flaws, but his development, going back to Colorado, speaks for itself.

      • 3
        21

Luton sucked. Luton’s results were all his WRs, specifically Hodgins. He made Luton look (barely) respectable, and then NFL teams fell for his frame and supposedly strong arm. How has that worked out for NFL teams?

        • 18

Same way it’s worked with just about every backup QB in the NFL.

Luton was a guy who had barely played football when he first got to OSU. His improvement during his time in Corvallis was significant. You can’t attribute that all to one receiver.

      • 4
        7

He brought in Noyer last year and installed him at QB, which had to be a factor in Vidlak transferring. His judgement and evaluation of talent is clearly terrible. It makes you question the entire depth chart.

        • This old debate. Every fall practice report said Nolan and Noyer were dead even. The staff went with the more experienced guy and quickly corrected course when they realized it was a mistake.

I don’t think it’s a talent evaluation problem; it’s clearly a recruiting problem. Hopefully Chiles ends that trend the way our DL recruiting suddenly improved a few years ago with the same coach.

          • Practice reports that are closed to the media said they were even.

Having one guy that is clearly mediocre at his very best and one guy who is pretty good and not knowing the difference when it’s right in front of your face is clearly a talent evaluation problem. Not to mention it’s the job you’re paid handsomely to do. It’s not like Noyer had some amazing body of work to base his opinions on, he was mediocre his entire career.

We’ve had this discussion before but it bears repeating. It’s a safe assumption that Vidlak recognized early on that Lindgren would never play him so it was time to move along.

          • Why? Lindgren played him in mop up time really early in the season. You don’t do that to a young guy that you never expect to put on the field.

        • 1
          1

Reading between the lines, it sounded like maybe a personality clash issue with Vidlak. Could’ve been a situation where he jumped at a P12, in-state offer and that overshadowed not really gelling with the coaches.

It’ll be interesting to see where he goes with Green clearly entrenched in Boise.

    • 10

Must be nice to have FU money to buy a last-minute 11k suite for the P-12 championship game and then watch your team fall apart. I hope this booster and his party enjoy watching USC/Utah!

    • Canzano’s wife was sitting in our row, a few seats down from us, amazing how many people knew who she was, apparently Canzano had popped over for a bit too. She and I had a short conversation, didn’t mention Dolphins however.

  63. Fickle to Wisconsin. So much for staying and building the program at Cincy. All it took was one unranked winning season to change his mind.

  64. Rewatched highlights. Even when flagged with PI near the end, Cooper is smiling. Then Austin got the next one…then they stopped them first and goal. I have to admit, at the time, I was wondering if you let them score to ensure you have more time left and can keep running the ball? Stopping them in that context was extra sweet.

    • Anyone see the replay of BG losing the ball on the qb sneak and regaining it in midair to score the TD? Never knew about that watching it live.

      • It looked like 20 guys in a prison shower wrestling for a bar of soap. The ABC guy did make the call that it popped out. I did believe it til I saw the replay.

      • Yes, that could have been tragic. He also had the ground caused a fumble play. I understand it wasn’t a fumble, but why give P-12 refs a chance to screw things up? Be secure with that damn football young man! He makes me nervous on almost every play where he is passing or running.

    • More replay talk, what about the completion by ducks receiver towards end of half that looked like it hit the ground. Was that a catch? It was hard to tell in the stadium.

  65. What’s Tinkle’s buyout again? MBB losing to Portland St. by 11 at halftime. WBB looked like crap against Duke, only scoring 41 points in a 13-point loss. I don’t think the program is going to do better than Rueck, but it seems to me that he’s lost some of the “family magic”.

    • Lol. I just remembered they were playing tonight and checked the box score online. Nope. Not turning that shit on the TV

      • Down 17 with about 11 minutes left. Where does Tinkle find these guys who cannot shoot the ball? And yes, I think Duke is just not that good this year so I wouldn’t even point to that game as having any potential with this team.

        • can confirm, duke has major issues this year. nobody on that team can shoot either.
Saw Purdue dominate them. Purdue looks like a pretty legit NCAA tourney contender this year if they can stay healthy. Their center is a 7’4″ beast surrounded by a bunch of good ball handlers who can all shoot pretty well.

  66. I know it’s a young team, and they have shown some flashes. But you lose to Portland State twice in 9 days after never losing to them previously and the vultures are going to start swirling. Tinkle better coach this second half like his job depends on it.

    • Let’s see. This team isn’t good at anything offensively, gives up an absurd amount of offensive rebounds, can’t defend, and has horrible coaching. PSU will blow them out

      • Beavs finally playing a team that is hitting those wide open shots they give up every game. PSU is going to score 90 and win by 20+.

  67. Beavs getting absolutely handled by Portland State. At this point it is embarrassing. PSU is doing whatever they want and we are hopelessly bricking threes and wishing there wasn’t 8 minutes left. Does Tinkle get fired after this??

  68. 14

The late hot takes again –

    – Nothing like a win that had the highest of highs and lowest of lows. Got to experience all the emotions in 4 hours.
    – Felt like a slow death in the 3rd quarter
    – The cowboy hats were odd at first but then awesome at the end.
    – All the stats say Oregon should have won the game but the 4th down stops nullified the turnover margin along with the muffed punt
    – The QB push sneaks are going to be very popular with every team now
    – The crowd was dead when Oregon got the Harrison fumble. Some thought he was down but then we saw the replay and went silent and looked at the ground.
    – The football gods decided that the Beavs were getting hosed and made some corrections.
    – First Oregon TD was just luck. Ball just happened to end up on the WR hands.
    – The crowd was so loud at the end, I can’t wait to hear it with the new new side. It’ll be deafening.
    – I still have to remember that this is GB first season playing since high school. But I still don’t know what his ceiling is. It looks like he’s got a great grasp of the offense. It’s just the execution on his throws.
    – Newell is showing why he was the highest rated recruit in his class. He ran with a purpose after the Cal game when he got denied his first career TD.
    – All the DBs and WRs talk a lot of trash to the other team. I’ve noticed this in every game.
    – Duck fans are very annoying
    – the fact that there was no drop off in the running game after Martinez went out is a testament to how good of a coach, coach M is.
    – never seen so many flags picked up in one game
    – Beavs AD better be doing some hard lobbying for the Holiday Bowl or Vegas bowl
    – Dan Lanning channeled his inner Smith to go for it on 4th down. Wonder if there will be an angryducks blog now

    • “– The QB push sneaks are going to be very popular with every team now”

Might need to bring the rugby coach over and have the team practicing scrums.

In a sense, I can see it. I mean, in the past the defenses have always been able to do push like that.

“– The crowd was so loud at the end, I can’t wait to hear it with the new new side. It’ll be deafening.”

Great to hear that. Reser could genuinely become a home field advantage; 11-1 last two seasons, stadium upgrade that brings fans a bit closer, enthusiastic fans, including what seems to be a very engaged student section.

Are they using that video board in creative ways?

Thanks for the report and perspective!

    • I think Ben can be really good in this offense with a full offseason with the 1’s. I expect him to take a big leap and win the starting job.

    • It looked like Harrison’s fumble was caused by a helmet to helmet uncalled targeting hit by Keith Brown.
Refs reviewed the fumble but didn’t even mention the targeting hit at all.

    • 1
      1

Good sum up of the game.

Game was as loud as any I’ve been to at Reser. Duck fans sitting in front of me kept turning around complaining I was too loud(?). Dude a couple seats down at one point in the third turned and put his finger in front of his mouth in a ‘quieting’ motion and gal in row behind for a good portin of the 1st half was blowing a duck call. WTF, know your place fools!

Weather couldn’t have been more perfect. What a treat!

What was with all the picked up flags? I still need to watch the game replay.

      • “Game was as loud as any I’ve been to at Reser. ” so great to hear comments like this consistently given its half a stadium and at about 28K. The Reser rebuild is actually tracking well with the football program rebuild. Crowds next year should create challenges for teams.

  69. USC’s scores this year. 66, 41, 45, 17, 42, 30, 42, 45, 41, 55, 48, 38.

Their 17 at OSU is a season low. The next closest? They were “held” to 30 by WSU.

  70. Damien Martinez season totals:

    970 yards on 158 carries, 6.1 YPC
    Four catches 61 yards
    1,031 total yards, 7 TDs.

Long runs of 43, 50, 40, 26, 43, all in conference games show big play ability.

PAC Offensive Freshman of the Year?

Next year, given he’ll be a known quantity, I bet there’s a few more throw to him out of the backfield for different looks.

  71. As Bill said in post above, coach M is a good coach. The term Great will work also. They need to keep him above anyone IMHO as he is creating a deep and very physical offensive line crew. They just pounded the ducks into submission the last quarter and a half.

      • Coach M won’t leave. He’s going to stick around. Position coaches are rarely poached unless they are elite recruiters.

Bray should deservingly get looks at some programs. But I still think he needs to show another year of great defense before a program gives him the keys.

Awarding them raises should happen. They earned them.

        • I thought they get raises every year as part of Smith’s contract. Not to mention the bonuses for getting a certain# of wins and winning the civil war. Barnes has been good about giving Smith the tools he needs to succeed like a larger pool for assistants. But definitely agree they’ve earned it.

    • We haven’t landed star OL candidates yet either— it’s mainly been development of players entering the program w/ JUCO + occasional transfer.

  72. 2
    5

Some people complaining that UO is still ranked above OSU, but if you look at the significant wins and losses, it does make sense:

    UO lost to #1, #25, and #21
    UO beat #12, #9, and #10

OSU lost to #7, #12, and unranked UW
OSU beat #9 (no other ranked wins)

    • I think the playoff committee will put OSU ahead of oregon.

UW was unranked at the time we beat them, but ranked pretty highly now. Should count for something.
And only Vanderbilt lost by more to GA. Every other GA game was more competitive. Oregon didn’t just lose that game, the got embarrassed.

    • While I agree with the result, I don’t agree with the methodology…

It’s a disingenuous way to look at rankings – current rankings matter, not the at-the-time rankings. Takes the course of the season for rankings to catch up with reality. Obv WA is a good team that deserves to be ranked, even if they weren’t ranked at the time. BYU definitely did NOT deserve to be ranked. So in that light:

      UO lost to #1, #9, #16
      UO beat #12 and #17

      OSU lost to #4, #9, and #12
      OSU beat #15

So basically our losses were similar (all quality losses) but they have one more quality W than we do.

      • I don’t disagree. I think you have to consider both rankings (at the time they played and current). Current rankings include how a team has progressed or degraded, they also include the same for other teams in the system. Teams move up and down based on other games that they have no control over, so you can’t use just current rankings either.

      • I also think head to head has to weigh more than just simply saying we beat the #XX team and they lost to the #YY team.
It’s head to head. 1 team was better than the other at the end of the season, when it all mattered.

  73. Rooting interests this week

    USC
    Georgia
    TCU
    North Carolina
    Boise St

Wins by these teams will benefit the Beavs. Beavs would pass LSU, K State, possibly Clemson and Utah if they get blown out. Boise St could sneak into the rankings with a win strengthening the SOS factor. Fresno is getting less votes in the polls.

  74. Other random notes from the game – mostly rants

    – The PA announcer wasn’t the same guy. He made some odd mistakes throughout the game. His third down announcements need to be worked on, pretty bland. Other guy had a lot of emotion.
    – The end of the third quarter music needs work. Started with the normal AC DC and then went into a bunch of random stadium anthems. Kind of killed the mood.
    – Cell phone service stinks in the stadium particularly in the stands. I found fairly normal service in the concourse. Could not get any score updates on apps.
    – Bathroom lines were ridiculous. Never seen them that long throughout the game. But good to see line cutting was not allowed by fans on both sides. Thought some people in beer lines were cutting in the bathroom lines but because the lines were so long, they started to blend together. Hope it’s all bathrooms on the other side.
    – Reentry process was not good. They gave us stamps but then had to show tickets to get back in too. Since it’s not a physical ticket, a person may not have the ticket with them and would need the ticket holder to send to them. But I did see something about not allowing reentry next year.
    – The O S U chant for the stands will be back next year. They tried it, but who was supposed to shout O? It didn’t work.
    – Tail slap needs to go away, it’s poorly time every time. And just not good.

    – The first down chants kept getting louder each time the Beavs got one in the 4th quarter. So much extra on the hoo at the end.
    – There needs to be more music from the band instead of the PA. The band only plays like three pieces. First down chant, fight song, and the OSU Go Beavs song.
    – Did the OSU Fight Fight Fight chant die? Do the students even know it?
    – Keep the opposing fans and band up in the top corner of the stadium.
