Wow! I can’t believe how slow DJ is. He has no “quicks.” Not as athletic as I thought he’d be. I can’t see him evading any pass rush at the next level.
1st drive run heavy = touchdown. 2nd and 3rd drive pass heavy = punts. Lindgren needs to get his shit together. Every possession matters. We could be up at least 2 td’s by now.
I know it was pre-planned and that they knew going into it that Chiles would get the first series of the second quarter and that he’s likely earned it in practice. But goddamn does this bring up some of those “finding our offensive identity” Riley years vibes. Terrible for DJU’s confidence, and if Chiles goes in and gets roughed up early that’s tough for him too.
If you’ve lost confidence in DJU and Chiles has showed up in practice, just give him the start.
Or just put BG in there and have him hand it off 80% of the time with an known 7-1 win percentage.
Seems it should be 17 zip, if the Beavs don’t score to start the second half it’s gonna be really dicey to say the least.
Utes gonna turn their QB loose to run and then try to surprise with a long bomb.
Utah can’t do shit on offense and we are only up by 7. We can’t blame the defense tonight. Need to get creative. Is the gameplan this limited because of DJU? Even running the ball 16 times in a row would be better than the current gameplan.
The announcers said on air JS is more of a CEO and lets Lamebrain run offense. A CEO directs and keeps people on the correct trajectory. Come on coaches, stop stepping on your own dick!
Beavs won’t win many games unless they get the passing game going. Give me a high octane offense versus a plodding one because you’re never out of a game.
Defense looking good against a sub-par Ute O, no Cam Rising.
DJU continues to think slowly and throw high; still a couple good longer completions.
Martinez 8 carries for 51 yds.
Pre planned Chiles experiment poorly timed.
Should be 17 zip
3rd down pass was so DJ, open man so throw high (and wide). Even getting 3 out of that possession would have been important..
Now 3 of 9 on third down.
Any idea why Newell isn’t playing more? He’s huge and has shown he can run. Love how Martinez gets 7 yards a carry. I just worry about the workload.
Also would love to see a fly sweep. Maybe Utah’s defense is too smart and fast on the outside. Dj seems to be more decisive with his throws but not many tight spirals.
I really don’t understand targeting anymore. That looked more dangerous than what Rawls did. Now Rawls will have to miss the first half of the next game if I recall the rule correctly.
I would have liked to see three runs. Don’t have to be up the middle. Get creative!! It would be one thing if you were running high percentage throws with easy completions to keep the clock running.
If there is still any chance of switching to Chiles, this could be the perfect time. This game’s in the bag and the next 5 should all be fairly easy wins.
Yeah no kidding….should be up by 30 points with the backups getting reps, but Lindgren forcing pass plays. Run the ball, or quickly get it to receivers in space. If Utah has an average offense, this game probably tied or worse.
Lindgren called two pass plays on fourth and one that resulted in incompletions, which culminated in 7 points for Wazzu. He did the same thing against Washington last year which resulted in a 14 point swing.
In his interviews he always talks about “matchups” which is good, but when the QB is sporadic with throws and the line is getting a great push it’s better to default to the less risky play.
Chiles should start next week right? Even if he looks shitty they can pull him and still win the game. If he looks decent the schedule looks favorable for building confidence.
That poor Ute QB has taken a beating today, I actually feel bad for him. He wasn’t very accurate either but his receivers dropped a handful today so they weren’t doing him any favors.
My biggest concern is can dj make a throw when he needs to? He made a few of those this game. What I don’t understand is, he has a cannon but I don’t see many nice spirals. Can anyone explain? Even the wide open pass to
Veilling last weekend for the final touchdown was a wobbly ball. It’s like when he tries to put touch on the pass he changes his arm motion maybe and doesn’t follow through?
I’d give Chiles a shot to start the next game. See if he has a higher ceiling. Can always revert back to DJU if necessary, who is basically a perfectly average DI QB
Only if you are convinced DJ has hit his ceiling in Lindgren’s system. I wonder if he is just a slow learner and could raise his level of play with a couple (likely) confidence building starts.
Chiles was 5 steps forward (nice throw) and 7 steps back (deep drop and sack). I love his potential but not the time to start him. I still wonder if Ben would have won us the wazzu game. I’m prepared to be chastised.
That’s what I’ve been thinking since the game ended too.
I know they (and we) all wanted DJU to be able to come in and add a whole new dynamic to the offense and take it to the next level, but he’s shown that he just isn’t capable of being that guy, and the coaches tipped their hand that they very well know that by throwing Chiles out there for a 2nd quarter series (wtf). It almost feels like he is putting so much pressure on himself to be a Heisman candidate kind of player (and the coaches are too) that they can’t just play to his strengths and away from his weaknesses like they did with BG last year.
If you go back and look at the last handful of games from last season, the offense with BG was limited in some ways, but humming along with a healthy rhythm and identity and steadily improving. Can we really say the same thing about the offense this year with DJU 5 games in? Is it getting better?
Tonight was frustrating because the team played so well overall, but I couldn’t help be see that they very easily could have played a more complete game and walked off with a 35-0 shutout if they’d just played the same brand of BG ball that they were at the end of last season. Smh.
Yeah Ben did have the offense going. dJ has four games now in this offense. Let’s see how it looks in the next few games. Fortunately the schedule is favorable for growing pains. I always forget how tough it is getting a team to play better and better as the year goes on in college football. So many off season changes. I thought Riley was good at getting his teams to play their best ball later in the year (my memory might be bad). Smith did that last year too. Let’s hope the momentum keeps building. If wazzu was the bad game to get some things fixed then well they almost won that too.
Seriously, my wife and I just put our 3yr old and 1yr old in daycare for the first time in August and they have been sick every fuckin’ day since. They catch everything from the slightest gust of wind.
But yes those receivers for Utah ain’t catching shit from daycare lol
Defense held them to 198 yard. We gave up 15 TFL yikes.
26 passes to 36 rushs, seemed like it was the opposite. For beating the #10 team in the country I’m not very satisfied with the win.
Seems like this game should have been 35-0 or better.
Definitely a sign of progress when we can grumble against a top 10 win that was well in hand early in the fourth. The team SHOULD be 9-1 going into UW game.
That was a great win. Beat the living shit out of Utah. Play calling was good not great. Liked seeing DJU run more although he isn’t as good of runner as I expected. Bolden was dynamic and I liked how the coaches got him involved. Say what you will about Utah not having a qb but they came in to Reser 4-0 and have beat some good teams. My biggest concern next week is lack of depth on D with targeting suspensions in first half
It was a good win. We beat a top 10 team with a so-so offensive showing. DJU isn’t showing that he is a Heisman candidate but take away the hype and I think he still was a decent game manager. He hit some deep balls that were positive that we were missing in past years. Our defense looked good and hopefully the offense can figure it out. I get what people are saying about putting in Chiles but its a huge decision to bench an experienced player for a freshman who showed that he isn’t’ quite ready to read Pac-12 defenses. I’m disappointed in DJU ceiling but I still think he’s the best option right now. All things considered, we’re still in good shape to make a run.
Reser has become quite the home field environment the last 3 seasons. 14-1 at home with the one loss being by 3 points. Great for the whole student body to be back. Offense looked rocky but Ute defense is very good.
Classy. I posted proof in the last thread of me being a student to include me being logged in to the student ticket portal, and a screenshot of my student ticket.
Just got home from the game. Good atmosphere, though stadium was nowhere near full. Friday night traffic in from Portland was pretty brutal, dont blame people for staying home. Those early weeknight kickoffs are tough to make unless you leave work around 1:00.
Utah looked like a #10 team that didnt want to be #10. Reminded me of ASU the time they came into Reser ranked #6 and an average Beaver team just murdered them. Had a similar feel. Utah just couldnt get much of anything going.
Took the kids down on the field after the game. Fun time, got to meet Silas Bolden. My kids were shy but he was really sweet with them. Nice guy.
Good bounceback win. It’s too bad we had such a poor showing at Pullman cause this team could easily be 5-0 for September.
Can still win the Pac as a 1 loss team, but that’s a tall order when you see how incompetent the reffing can become as soon as OSU starts to build momentum.
They didnt show much of a replay, but that PI call in the end zone was about as bad as I’ve ever seen. Was it as bad on TV?
Untouched.
The ref that threw the flag had the angle with the receiver in front of the defender and no concept of human mechanics or basic physics, so there’s that.
I was impressed by the overall improvements in the entire gameday experience. Bunch of places to eat and get alcohol and a bar area with a good view of the field. Had end zone tickets but stood at the bar for the second half and I didn’t have to worry about people asking me to sit down. I’ve been going to games since the early 2000’s and it’s really nice to see the growth in the team and the facilities. It’s just a bummer that the realignment storm had to happen now, right when we have everything going for us.
Feeling much better about the rest of the year after this one after what transpired in Pullman last week…I had the luxury of seeing DJU throw a mile over someone’s head and it’s worse in person. I feel like he just needs to fucking breathe once in a while. He’s way too tense and antsy and slower than I thought he’d be. A few of the runs from shotgun would have gone for a lot though if he just kept the ball.
We know our D is good. Our special teams is good. Our offense overall is solid and we haven’t had a run in with our head ball coach’s love of riverboat gambling yet. I felt like we got our identity back tonight and I just hope DJ improves because we aren’t asking him for much. Pound the rock and throw an accurate pass to a TE in the flat once in a while haha.
I like reading the newspapers from the opposing team after games to get their perspective. Coach Whit earlier in the week said they needed to get their passing game going or they were going to be in trouble. I kind of feel the same way about the Beavs, although our passing game isn’t as bad as Utahs. Maybe its a combo of things – poor QB play, lack of a quality target at TE and few quality WR’s that are big who can go up and get the ball. I know our strength is running the ball, but you have to be able threaten the opposing D by stretching the field. We know a good running game can open the passing game but it also works the other way – a good effective passing offense can open up the running game. You gotta have balance.
Too many plays went for negative yards on first and second down, even when we ran the ball with Martinez and Fenwick. Utah was good at blowing up the outside zone runs.
I like that we had a fullback blast, even if it was only one. It’s such a simple and effective play that beats up the middle of the defense.
This is exactly how I felt watching the wazzu game. Some were frustrated lindgren went away from the run but you gotta have more than 100 passing yards through three quarters. Nice to see Bolden and DJ getting some chemistry. Noga not out there again on offense. I don’t get that. At least give him a few plays. Irish did have a nice catch.
DJ’s worst moment was the INT he flung off his back foot, wobbly ball, and just a terrible decision overall. Gulbranson just doesn’t do that shit, shows me that DJ shouldn’t be the starter….BG should be. DJ should come in for RPO, almost like a utility player on 3rd/4th and short that Colletto was — that would be dynamic and add another dimension to the packages.
And CU is getting boat raced by USC, down 21-0 already. Deion was able to get enough transfer skill player improvement to beat two mediocre and one bad team in non-conference and the world went apeshit. Teams improve a little from season to season all the time, but most programs don’t have a self-promoter like Prime. Sanders did great at Jackson St, but no one ever mentions how he lost both of their post-season games even with all that talent.
He has become such a blowhard. I found him mildly amusing at first, but now I have no desire to watch a grown man in tank tops talking loud and saying nothing.
Reser is now a top notch facility and the gameday experience is so improved it is almost shocking to think back to the days of octogenarians yelling at you to sit down and be quiet.
The techno din isn’t the worst and the live DJ kind of grows on you as the game goes on.
Students were out in full force and it was beautiful to see them filling in all sections beneath the Jumbotron as overflow and the aisle behind the lower bowl had students standing room only all along the beaver sideline.
The stadium was rocking and loud. I’ve heard the term “Club Reser” which is kind of what it felt like. The light show is pretty fun and hopefully doesn’t induce seizures for some fans.
Now onto the post game thoughts:
Utah is in trouble as long as Rising isn’t playing. He is a program elevating qb. Their defense was good but not as great as declared and I’d say their schedule wasn’t as strong as everyone thought even if they had 3 P5 wins so far.
I said pregame that I wasn’t sure Utah could score on the Beavs defense and the defense nearly had the shutout.
DJ is 5 games into a different offense with much smaller receivers than he has previously had at Clemson. I think he got lazy throwing to guys with much wider and taller catch radius. He needs to adjust and hopefully it improves.
Utah is good forcing qbs out of their comfort zone and yet DJ played solid for the game. His interception was a head scratcher though.
Beavs defense was the best unit on the field.
Worst unit on the field was the PAC12 ref crew. PI in the corner of the end zone was atrocious. Utah oline were tackling guys on any scramble, never a flag. The interception in the red zone was sweet justice for the phantom calls that got Utah down the field.
Beavs controlled the entire game against Utah as well as they did against SDSU and won comfortably. It is amazing how JS has been able to raise the bar of expectations and productivity. This was a great follow up to the national tv Wazzu loss. Another national attention game with a win rather than another loss as we have been conditioned to expect.
Bolden is a wizard with the ball, get it to him.
Gould dropped a sure touchdown on the inside slant/crossing route.
Mascara was is a stud.
Jordan is going to be real good.
We have a real shot at 9-1 going into UW game and I expect the Beavs to ply with the same fire and chip on their shoulder all the way
Through. P
Prime wants to make everything personal, but it already is personal when the entire conferences ditches your program and acts like they deserve more.
Go kick their teeth in and don’t let up, JS.
The sounds system once it gets installed will be a huge upgrade. Right now the temporary speakers all conflict with each other and it’s very much an echo chamber, at least from up where I was sitting.
Overall, felt like a solid (with work still needed obvs. on offense), win at home.
Would feel better with a cleaner game next time.
I liked some of the passing routes that were called for WR unit this game; would like to see more of these incorporated later into season, as these gave more opportunities for them to catch in space for YAC.
Despite some of DJ’s accuracy issues, when he throws a good ball it is pretty damn impressive with how fast it gets there. I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s basically Gulbranson with more arm strength, so it’s the same situation as last year. Run game and defense are going to win games.
And he gets measurably better with each game. Plays that were wonders last week are completions this week. But there are more and newer plays that have become wonders this week.
The guy walking out to the deli had a “3:45” timer clock at each stoppage for commercials. Seemed really
Long at the game too.
Mike Leach forced this upon us with the air raid innovations because the clock stops a lot more often with incomplete passes which extends the actual length of games, and tv coverage couldn’t predict how long the games would last.
In response TV makes the commercial breaks longer and then lobbies for rule changes with a running clock so they can still predict a 3.5 hour window for the games.
Without the tv and new rule changes, a game might be over in 2.5 hours.
The Stadium is very nice. The experience was very good. There was food beer every where with out many issues. There cheer team and cheerleaders seem better. The color on the live film made the beavers orange look red on the big screen. Not sure if it came across that way on the tv?
I agree the commercial breaks are long and too often. I think they need to do things to get the crowd going and less of the fluff hand out BS. Really it is a let down. The football throws or kick competitions can be announced and with music of chants to keep the crowd involved. It was a defensive game so maybe the commercial breaks came more often?
Our DB’s and LB’s are very physical. Most of Utah’s WR drops came from hard hit as the ball was coming in. We played very good defense. Other then chasing the QB in the back field and missing the tackles several times.
As I said, Colorado is a 6 win team max, so we wanted them to beat Oregon. They’d get their beat downs later. Oh well. Now we have to hear about Oregon and the Natty.
I’m guessing 15ish. Maybe as high as 13 max. Depends on if the pollsters think the Utah win was enough to over shadow the WSU loss. I’m thinking not because we’re not in the SEC.
Beavs will now be the 4th best 1 loss team until they 1 loss teams get whittled down.
They will stay behind Alabama, LSU, Notre Dame for now, and any teams above them who lose will land in front of the Beavs too.
The good thing about the Wazzu loss is an early loss followed by a long win streak is better than a late loss. Or so the theory goes.
Penn St is struggling on the road with Northwestern, still tied 10-10 with about 11 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, but I don’t see NW being able to sustain for the entire game.
I saw a quote where Smith admitted he did not know the correct hand signals for what he wanted to be done out there, so he improvised and now he’s an internet legend.
PFF notes from the game:
Offense
Rough night for the OL. Starck with 0 snaps after seeing decent playing time so far this season. TE continues to be a major weakness. DJU made the top 3, but his rating was still pretty ho hum.
Top 3
Bolden
Irish
DJU
Bottom 3
Gould
Velling
Terry
Defense
Hats off to the front 7 for controlling the LOS against Utah. Always a tough feat. Jordan may be nipping at Hart’s heels for playing time now. Interesting to see Cooper and Thomas lined up out wide at CB the most. Ivy with 0 snaps and Robinson played sparingly. Did he get hurt? Tackling continues to be an issue. This was our worst game yet in terms of missed tackles. It’s looking like a Banker defense!
I think Jordan is starting anyway next week with Hart Jr. suspended for the first half, right? It was time for Ivy to sit. Surprised that Starck is not getting any snaps, I don’t know if he’s good in pass protection, but that needs to improve.
Melvin is better than Hart. He is going to be a starter for a few years. But don’t tell Angry, cause his recruiting write up was not favorable compared to how the experts had him evaluated and he is always right and when not spins a narrative.
Colorado has 251 yds at half against SC. Not buying that bs that the Trojans are a national championship team. Not with that D. The hype and constant stroking of both teams are over the top.
That might be the worst clock management I’ve seen in awhile. People complain about Lindgren but man Colorado just made him look good.
Colorado had no time outs and were down 14 with 4 minutes left. They ran the ball multiple times, audibles every play, slowly lined up. No hustle at all, it was pathetic.
So rewatched the game without the emotion involved. DJ had 3 spot on passes dropped by our receivers and Gould was two of them. I saw 3 bad passes, the rest were good and a couple intricately placed to the receivers. Last year every time BG threw my gut hurt as they all seemed like 50/50 balls. I think DJ is an upgrade to BG. Was I hoping for more? Yes. But BG hit his ceiling early last year and I don’t think DJ has. Bolden is becoming ol reliable and I wish DJ had more like him.
Utah is a tough defense but we outplayed their defense. I just wish all our games were home games.
Our defense is legit. I’m hoping the WSU game was a fluke performance… OSU didn’t play their best game on both sides of the ball against wazzu but to wazzu’s credit they played lights out featuring one handed catches.
I think we would have won the Utah game even if Rising was playing.
The one thing I am happy about with the PAC going away is I don’t have to put up with the ignorant Pac12 refs anymore.
I don’t see an issue at Cal even with the ejections. Targeting rule is ruining the game the way it is being applied.
Go Beavs!
BeaverBill I think our slow start last week against the Cougs did us in but the Cougs played great – almost a perfect game. Ward and their receivers were great. I’d love to play them again later this year. They have favorable schedule compared to most teams in this meat grinder conference. I also think our D is one of the best in the conference. Gotta get the passing game going.
Is it worth a separate thread for discussion of DJ?
Your review, BeaverBill, brings up some points that have been on my mind:
-has DJ had enough game reps under Lindgren’s system to not be held back by grasp of the book?
-what responsibility do the receivers bear in the performance of DJ
-what about Lindgren’s play calling (ex: lack of using the TE’s)
-etc?
No need for “sorry”, you’re not alone.
If DJ gets the vast majority of the snaps over the next two games I think he’ll continue to get better; maybe not the super star many expected, but well above average.
Pretty bizarre, Furd leads the Quacks 6-0 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Quacks have only had the ball a couple of times and I think both three and outs. Stanford just had to punt, so will we see if their defense can continue.
USC looked beatable today, I feel that both Washington and Oregon will beat them. Our schedule looks pretty favorable, and it would be possible for us to be 9-1 going into the UW game. On the other hand, we often lay a few stinkers on the road a year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we dropped a game at Colorado, Cal, or Arizona. If we win out until the UW game and then win one of UW or Oregon, we should be in the conference title game. Really need to clean up pass coverage and get back to our running roots on offense if we want that to happen.
Funny thing about the game experience last
Night was the new to me “Beaver Tail Slap” which seemed a lot like the Gator chomp.
I kept waiting for the Beavahawk chop and the accompanying theme song to mimic the FSU tomahawk chop.
I wonder if we can start stealing all of these types of traditions from all of the schools as a way of showcasing the case for OSU as America’s Team…
USC is soft, Deion is annoying, Oregon is overrated, Georgia is beatable, Texas will choke…
so, Duke, inside the ND 45 with two minutes left and the lead, pooch punts to ND, who takes over on their own two, drives the field, and wins the game; only to show that Smith was right when he went for it on 4th down in Pullman in 2019
Funny but true. SEC gets so much more credit even in loses. If OSU was #20 and lost like LSU did they’d drop out of rankings. Would not surprise me at all if LSU stayed in the rankings. How else are Alabama and Georgia supposed to play ranked teams? lol
Not really a huge priority, but I think Reser is definitely in need of some new turf in the coming years. It’s quite flat now and seems worn when you’re down on it. The green is starting to fade. Best source I found is that the last time it was replaced was in 2012, which came along with the rebrand to our current logo, and the old google machine tells me that turf should be replaced roughly every ten years. Bad artificial turf increases risk for injuries, in particular ligament injuries, and with the way the sides of our field are lower than the middle with the underground drainage, it could become a problem.
Turf does look old and worn out on TV even. Wouldn’t be surprised if they had planned to replace it next year now that they are done with the stadium renovation and don’t have any time crunch around that. I’m sure they’ve got plenty in next years budget for it… /s.
Back to the DJ getting experience in the Lindgren system topic, Eggers says, “Ulagalelei might not wind up on a list of great Oregon State QBs by the time he is through, but he is going to progress as he goes through his first season in an OSU uniform….”
Eggers adds this from Golden: “We showed one bad half of football (against Washington State),” Golden said. “That’s all you’re going to get out of us this year. I don’t see us taking any steps back.”
Pat Mcafee is a bloviating buffoon, who is all about himself!!! Can’t stand listening to that idiot! He thinks he’s bigger than the game and I’m sure is typical of the thinking of most of the sports “blue bloods” think. How dare WSU and OSU crash their parade. Shut up and take the few crumbs we through you!
I think McAfee started getting some play because Aaron Rodgers, who I consider a bit of a nut job, became a regular on his show. I don’t know what McAfee has to do with college football, but I’m sure ESPN is doing anything it can to attract ratings. Game Day is unwatchable now.
True, but I’m referring to him as a current “talking head”. His own show seems mostly NFL-based with his frat buddies. Just smacks of ESPN trying to be hip by adding him to Game Day.
Arizona gave a blueprint into how to keep UW’s offense from boat racing their team. Took away all the deep stuff and made them complete everything underneath. A team like Utah with a better defense could do that and then stop them in the redzone. It’ll be hard for any team to stop UW from moving between the 20s.
vs Oregon, we’ll find out if UW’s defense has improved from last year.
First 1st?
Ugh. Will-a – Met Valley? Seriously? Brando has been at it long enough – i’m guessing too long if he’s doing Raymond J. Johnson riffs.
Good Lord, is Brando ever going to shut up?
Hahaha!!!!
Need to run the ball and come away with points here. FGs will be fine against Utah.
There’s your DJ run
Uhoh 4th and 1
Good play call there! Crying for it forever. They were ready for it tho.
Have dj run it here!
It’s early, but Martinez is making good on that bulletin board remark (maybe read by Beavs O-line as well as the Utes?).
Just run the ball, I guess
Wow. What a fucking run.
last 2 yds was all Martinez!
Wow…Beavs .run the ball and score…what a concept!!!
Yeah that drive summary pretty much sums it up.
Try to have DJ throw on 1st and 10 and 2nd and 10, bad. Just hand it to 6 and run over people, good.
Nice matador job by gray.
It was a great move by the defensive end
Brando can’t pronounce “Willamette” correctly?
We all know it’s the Willa-Met valley! ;)
Glad you noticed too!
Good on Brando for apologizing
Afraid if this qb starts running
Wow! I can’t believe how slow DJ is. He has no “quicks.” Not as athletic as I thought he’d be. I can’t see him evading any pass rush at the next level.
Yeah, he’s sort of lumbering, but ok on runs straight up the middle.
?
Contrast the Utes receivers versus the Cougs last week who caught everything thrown in their direction.
I don’t like putting Chiles in here. Hopefully he does well! Can’t afford any turnovers in this game.
Chiles is finding out REAL quick how fast college defenders close.
WTF….stop with 5-7 step drop backs, getting sacked all day. Make ‘em stop the run!!
The kid needs to throw a screen. They are blitzing to rattle him.
Well that was dumb.
From a game experience standpoint, he now has an idea of what to expect from the highest level defense out there.
But yeah… not great, from the strategery side.
I’m not watching did dj get hurt?
Nope, planned series. Hard to believe putting Chiles in this early with only a 7 pt lead.
No. Just put Chiles in to see what the kid can do. DJ is a statue in the pocket.
1st drive run heavy = touchdown. 2nd and 3rd drive pass heavy = punts. Lindgren needs to get his shit together. Every possession matters. We could be up at least 2 td’s by now.
Stupid to play Chiles there!
Is JS poking the bear here?
What the fuck Lindgren? Just run the ball.
Well, the pass to Irish was beautiful, but geez let him hand off or fly sweep it to ease into it.
Kyle Whittingham looks like he lives in a tent
He’s gone with the long hair and scruffy beard. He’s a good dude, he adjusted my son’s helmet at a Utes football camp many years ago!
Didn’t say he wasn’t a good dude. He just looks like a homeless bum roaming the sidelines.
Can’t let them run with success.
Losing momentum.
A turnover would be nice.
Or is DJU banged up? I haven’t had audio watching the game so far.
No DJU is fine. Stupid plan in that situation. Could’ve possibly gone up by two scores which is huge in this game.
Defense looking good
Now let’s run the ball. Few screens or fly sweeps peppered in
Good energy at the game…dj back in
When you have no passing game, eventually you won’t be able to run the ball.
Chiles thing just really threw everything off.
Yep. Fucked up the flow.
32 yd punt gives Utes a chance to score before the half, watch out for QB run.
Man I hope the wasted, bad timed, series with Chiles doesn’t haunt us. Utah has a little life now.
For shit’s sake tackle the ball carrier!
Good idea on the pooch kick. Just got a bad bounce.
Agree with how the defense is doing, pooch kick good call
We need help at WR. Not only are we short as shit, apparently Silas is the only one that can catch anything.
Yep!
Unfortunately, that was a bad drop by Gould. Even a FG would have been big on that drive.
Need some guys (receivers, DB’s) to step up and make some plays. Missed tackles, McCartan dropping that INT, and dropped passes are killing us!
Too bad we arent more dedicated to running the ball and grinding out drives.
Fuck it, keep passing
Watch both these offenses combine for 60 pts in the second half! ;o)
Seems it should be 17 zip, if the Beavs don’t score to start the second half it’s gonna be really dicey to say the least.
Utes gonna turn their QB loose to run and then try to surprise with a long bomb.
Band nerds kicked ass…the dolly show was my kids suggestion byw
Who thumbs down dolly? Fuck you
Utah can’t do shit on offense and we are only up by 7. We can’t blame the defense tonight. Need to get creative. Is the gameplan this limited because of DJU? Even running the ball 16 times in a row would be better than the current gameplan.
Chiles experiment slowed down the mojo
Seriously the timing of bringing him in was terrible. I was yelling at the tv. Ruined the offenses flow and gave the Utes life.
Says the person watching the plodding Beavs run the plodding Two-Time Reigning Pac 12 Chamions off the field.
Imagine how the four schools going to the B1G are going to fare, having to plod week in and week out.
Missed the first half. What’s the gist of it?
We should be winning by 3 scores. Coaching!
Smith mess up again?
Lindgren
Defense looking good against a sub-par Ute O, no Cam Rising.
DJU continues to think slowly and throw high; still a couple good longer completions.
Martinez 8 carries for 51 yds.
Pre planned Chiles experiment poorly timed.
Should be 17 zip
Thanks.
The passing game plan in this game however, better complements our WR’s strengths.
Utes offense not much better.
Gist is sooooo many commercials
I watched the recording this morning, and I didn’t see a single commercial.
3rd down pass was so DJ, open man so throw high (and wide). Even getting 3 out of that possession would have been important..
Now 3 of 9 on third down.
Would be a good tailing fastball for the dodgers. He picked the wrong sport.
I thought same thing earlier. Should have picked baseball.
DJU yucky.
I think we can confirm that the lights are too bright for DJU. I just don’t see any hope for improvement. Time for Chiles or BG.
He’s holding back the offense not enhancing it. Time to move on.
Chiles looked a deer in the headlights. Not ready.
Either is DJU.
Cooper having a good game so far.
How do people listen to cowherd? Even his commercials are 10/10 annoying.
The strategy is working! Utes punter’s leg is getting tired!
Hahaha!!!!
Four straight runs please, some RPO action would be good.
If that don’t work, time to get Gulbranson in there.
Naw, just a couple midrange passes by DJ.
There we go boyz!
No open up the offense. Throw it.
Fuck yes Beavs
There we go!
DJU for Heisman?
Nolan not BG couldn’t make that throw last year.
Damn you Angry. You should have been watching all along. You turn up, they start playing.
I’m kind of a big deal…
Barnes is a huge upgrade over Johnson. Why didn’t they start Barnes?
Did they say someone was disqualified?
At the game and the sound here sucks
Yep Rawls ejected for targeting on that tackle of the QB. Shit.
Damn, didnt seem like it from my seats, but i not the best angle
300lb lineman blows up QB and some how the QB is the one not injured?!?!?
Luck O’ da Beavs
Here come Pac12 refs
On cue, Cooper flagged. Ticky Tack
Sure enough. Phantom PI
Refs going after us now
Need to pressure this qb!
Wow that’s a terrible PI call!!!
Huge step up in the red zone by the D!
Atrocious PI call.
Huge Swing. Huge.
P-12 refs just can’t help themselves. After a smooth first half, they decide to insert themselves in the game.
99 did not push in the back
Yup, that’s why I was bitching, and that PI call was ridiculous.
Utah is……not good
Yeah, not much offense, although Barnes was moving the ball, albiet with some penalties.
No, they’re not. This should have been a blowout.
Did they switch officials at halftime? Lots of ticky tack calls.
That was an amazing pick by Mascarenas
Followed by some smart running in traffic.
Time to put this to bed!
IF the Beavs can take the clock down below 10 and get at least a field goal – I think this game’s over. Would love to see the shutout hold though.
RUN THE BALL!
Beavs look formidable for the first time since the SJSU game.
Thats just another awful call! Its football!
Wow let’s run that pitch to Bolden more often. That was sweet.
Pretty clear targeting by Utah
Really? I sure didn’t think so. With where one’s head is on their body, sometimes helmets are bound to collide during a tackle. Shrug
Velling can block!
And Lindgren can call a mean O!………..once in awhile
Great call
I really don’t understand targeting anymore. That looked more dangerous than what Rawls did. Now Rawls will have to miss the first half of the next game if I recall the rule correctly.
You’re right, hopefully won’t miss him for a half vs Cal.
or they can do that.
Lindgren in his bag tonight
Not bad for the Pac2 runner up.
Dumb penalty!
Damn Hart. That was a brutal tackle. Literally lead with his helmet into the dude’s midsection.
Stupid stupid stupid.
Bonehead play.
And now Hart will be out the first half against Cal. That was a bit of a stupid play.
Can Hart do that in the civil war? Seems like a good trade.
To repeat the earlier observation. For today at least… Utah is not very good.
Yeah, they don’t have a qb.
Glad that Cal is up next. Going to be tought though – on the road with missing players and huge potential for a let-down after this game
I think Beavs know they can’t afford any letdowns against the bad teams, with games against 2 top 10 teams remaining on the schedule
If they don’t know that, it’s on JS
At least they will be well rested… glass half full joke
Of course they have to review.
Their QB can flat out run.
There’s the warts
There’s those Newell Njinksky feet.
Stupid throw!
Perfect compliment to two stupid playcalls.
Clock is your friend, Lindgren!! Wise Up
“But we had a great matchup…”
Just run the ball three times and take almost three minutes off of the clock if you can’t get the first down. Punt the ball against a shitty offense.
I would have liked to see three runs. Don’t have to be up the middle. Get creative!! It would be one thing if you were running high percentage throws with easy completions to keep the clock running.
Oof!
Why is DJU even in the game?
For the 52nd time this thread…..run the ball. At least mix it up like some more sweeps
If there is still any chance of switching to Chiles, this could be the perfect time. This game’s in the bag and the next 5 should all be fairly easy wins.
I didn’t know Chatfield was that fast. Holy cow.
Name been called by announcers last few games; great pick up.
Lindgren is a fucking idiot! Puts DJ in position to fail…so goddamn frustrating!!!!.
Lindgren could be what ruins a special season.
Literally cost us a loss last week.
Yeah no kidding….should be up by 30 points with the backups getting reps, but Lindgren forcing pass plays. Run the ball, or quickly get it to receivers in space. If Utah has an average offense, this game probably tied or worse.
He called 19 straight run plays. I’d say he has a bit of a leash. Still frustrating at times.
Not after last week.
Yeah lindgren is the one who didn’t throw the ball downfield until there was 6 minutes left. Come on.
Goddamn this is some inept football
Chatfield is NFL bound. Great body type.
I guess that’s one way to run the clock out.
Boldin can catch and also know how to run out the clock
Jaquizz Bolden tearing it up tonight.
Punting has been shitty. Something to watch.
So frustrating giving up the shutout!
Ruined the shutout. Fuck.
Blame Lindgren
Jordan almost with an int
There would only be about three minutes on the clock if Lindgren hadn’t called those stupid pass plays.
We dominated Utah. Game wasn’t even close and people still are bitching lol. Reminds me of baseball season.
What do you think the team does when they watch film? You’re happy with the good mad at the bad. Still lots to improve on.
Chiles should start next week right? Even if he looks shitty they can pull him and still win the game. If he looks decent the schedule looks favorable for building confidence.
DUMB
What. In. The. Fuck…are we doing.
Seriously wtf?
Good pass, that incomplete is on 87, can’t blame DJ for that. Blame Lindgren for the calls here.
Go for it lol
Apparently DJ doesn’t have an arm, accuracy, or anything else. It’s just his personality. Lmao!
That was a bizarre nonsensical comment. I wonder if these TV guys get any critiques after a broadcast?
That was the same hit Rawls was tossed for
Score again fuck’em
That poor Ute QB has taken a beating today, I actually feel bad for him. He wasn’t very accurate either but his receivers dropped a handful today so they weren’t doing him any favors.
Second win vs. a top 10 opponent for Smith.
A win is a win.
Offense has a long way to go for the team to compete for a title.
They played a pretty fuckin good defense.
This isn’t the first week we’ve had offensive issues.
But the o-issues are tightening up.
Some of the head-scratcher calls in past weeks actually worked and looked good in this game, against a much better defense.
Nice game. Show me game, and they showed us things are back on track. DJU still a concern…
Nah I agree. I wonder if this team would be better with Ben?
You make little sense. BG doesn’t beat that D with half the throws you just watched.
But he does make better pre-snap reads. And DJ is making less mistakes, regarding those reads. Chiles has a ways to go.
Utah’s receivers were terrible. Johnson isn’t accurate, but he was at least getting it in the catch radius. They couldn’t catch a cold at a daycare.
So then how’d they beat Florida, Baylor and UCLA.
Give credit where it’s due.
Beavs played pretty good tonight
With their defense.
“Catch a cold at a daycare” hahahaha
Seriously, my wife and I just put our 3yr old and 1yr old in daycare for the first time in August and they have been sick every fuckin’ day since. They catch everything from the slightest gust of wind.
But yes those receivers for Utah ain’t catching shit from daycare lol
At this point Chiles has one game left so I’d same him for backup necessary situation
Why? If we’re lucky, he’ll be at Oregon State for 4 years. The transfer portal made redshirting pointless for the best prospects.
Didn’t you say he should start next game earlier?
11 penalties for an even 100 yds, plus two out for targeting.
You knew Bray wouldn’t have two poor showings in a row, but still lots to clean up.
I agree but at least 4 of those 11 penalties should not have been even called. And this whole targeting stuff is out of control.
Man boobs play call aka “Smith calling for milking the clock” is going to be a huge meme. He even had a smile on his face while doing it.
Yup. Viral.
Defense held them to 198 yard. We gave up 15 TFL yikes.
26 passes to 36 rushs, seemed like it was the opposite. For beating the #10 team in the country I’m not very satisfied with the win.
Seems like this game should have been 35-0 or better.
Ya the offense has been leaving a lot of plays on the field.
Yup and its frustrating. Some penalties at inopportune times also killed a couple of good drives last night.
Utah’s front seven humbled OSU’s Oline.
Hello?
It’s Utah?
They’re not a team built on a QB and some good receivers. They will just beat on you, as they do everyone else.
They did not do that, last night, like they will do it to everyone else.
Cala offense is just as bad as Utahs so I’m betting that we should be okay.
Lots to clean up, but people seem to forget how good Utah defense is. We scored 8 more points than anyone else has so far against them.
Utah had given up just 4 TD the ENTIRE season to date. 1 each game. OSU scored 3 TD against them.
My step son in is this pic, where were you bitch boy?
https://twitter.com/BeaverFootball/status/1708008626189984141?t=KzughUa2UN-m5Awbf5AKGQ&s=19
Classy. I posted proof in the last thread of me being a student to include me being logged in to the student ticket portal, and a screenshot of my student ticket.
Where are the onfield pics, my dude?
Look at you, posting facts.
This is progress.
Yes it was a really bad call.
Untouched.
The ref that threw the flag had the angle with the receiver in front of the defender and no concept of human mechanics or basic physics, so there’s that.
In addition to no contact, the ball looked uncatchable anyway
Go Beavs!
Yeah… okay.
McAfee is a jackoff. But what do you expect from a guy who swings from Deions nuts.
http://amp.awfulannouncing.com/espn/pat-mcafee-wazzu-criticism-ryan-leaf.html
McAfee is as big of a buffoon as Deion is so it wouldn’t surprise me if he loves Deion. Couple of douchebag peas in a pod. Screw him and ESPN.
Oh he fucking can’t get enough of Deion. The game day show at cu/csu he was a giant nut swinger.
As soon as he got a platform he went into jackass overdrive. And now it’s down to disparaging players and schools for the shock value.
Deion?
He’s a nutter, through and through.
Deion is just his venue for viral whatever, as of now.
Go Beavs!
I was wondering about the light show. Did they replace the fireworks with it?
They still do the fireworks after touchdown but no booms any more.
PAC12 after dark games should be fun with the new setup.
This is pretty much it.
And he gets measurably better with each game. Plays that were wonders last week are completions this week. But there are more and newer plays that have become wonders this week.
It’s all noticeable.
Did the commercial breaks seem even more excessive than usual last night?
It felt like 3 plays, punt, 3 minute commercial break, repeat
Yes, I will have a weird compulsion to go purchase Flex Seal now.
Haha
*TV guy walking onto the field
USC, too
As much as I would like to see USC only win six games, I’m thinking 8 or 9 are most likely, in regular season.
Seems like USC’s defense can’t play a full 60 minutes.
Well… yeah… but they’ll win more than six.
I don’t think USC is a 6 win team. My comment was about hearing how USC will be a contender for the natty.
Oh… lol… fuck that noise.
Missed game. What do you all think Beavs’ chances of moving up to something like #10-12 now?
I’m guessing 15ish. Maybe as high as 13 max. Depends on if the pollsters think the Utah win was enough to over shadow the WSU loss. I’m thinking not because we’re not in the SEC.
I think Utah was overrated a #10, just too limited on O….BUT, still an in-control, dominant win over #10
Beavs will now be the 4th best 1 loss team until they 1 loss teams get whittled down.
Until Notre Dame loses to Duke today
Oh man…
https://deadspin.com/oregon-state-jonathan-smith-ncaa-football-utah-pac-12-1850889445
Uiagalelei is good enough to game-manage talented rosters to wins, …
From the piece, emphasis mine.
So our talented roster can win?
Praise Hayzeus!
Time to bring back the sports-bra unis…next home game….
All students should wear orange bras in student section…
Top 3
Lolohea
Jordan
Chatfield
Bottom 3
Hodgins
Johnson
Hart
I think Jordan is starting anyway next week with Hart Jr. suspended for the first half, right? It was time for Ivy to sit. Surprised that Starck is not getting any snaps, I don’t know if he’s good in pass protection, but that needs to improve.
Starck had a 14/100 pass block rating against WSU, so it may be performance related
There you go. If he is struggling with his pass blocking, he’s going to have a hard time getting snaps.
Melvin is better than Hart. He is going to be a starter for a few years. But don’t tell Angry, cause his recruiting write up was not favorable compared to how the experts had him evaluated and he is always right and when not spins a narrative.
Ole Miss beating LSU, which is favorable for our ranking. A Stanford win over Nike would be nice, too…
Colorado has 251 yds at half against SC. Not buying that bs that the Trojans are a national championship team. Not with that D. The hype and constant stroking of both teams are over the top.
I said it last week…..

Not with that defense.
I’ll give them a punchers chance vs USC since their defense isn’t any better.
Sanders is all hat and no cattle
USC is going to get their assed handed to them in Eugene.
It would be great for us if Colorado won this one.
Terrible play calling is going to sink them, though
Grinch is getting fired on the tarmac tonight. Unbelievable.
Riley has always had bad defensive teams. Even before grinch went to Oklahoma. I was surprised he brought grinch with him to usc.
Not sure it would have mattered because USC would have just needed one first down, but still.
Smith has gone from “Launch it” to “Milk it.”
Could be a lot of fun or come back to haunt..
Or “Milk it…We ain’t done yet!”
I’m pretty sure some of us can milk it.
Auburn up on Georgia.
ASU’s have no problem moving the ball on Cal.
I don’t know what to make of their defense. They held Auburn to 230 total yards, then give up 59 points to Washington.
That as an important win w/all other PAC leaders ahead of Utah likely to win.
-etc?
Not really.
He’s getting better every game. The whole game plan is tightening up.
I’m not getting the sine wave of emotion with every play.
Sorry.
Speedbump
Yeah, it didn’t continue.
Sorry, but who has been seeing USC as a non-soft team, other than the fellatio that always occurs for SC?
Their D is what you just saw. They give mediocre players confidence.
And this is college football.
How long have we been doing this?
Duke with “bleed blue” on the back lower edge of their helmets. Could have done that last night with the orange lids.
That’s what I’m saying! Lol
Griffin is on ole miss right? He’s not dressed for this game. Idk if it’s an injury but seems like a poor decision to transfer.
Money + closer to home
Funny thing about the game experience last
Night was the new to me “Beaver Tail Slap” which seemed a lot like the Gator chomp.
I kept waiting for the Beavahawk chop and the accompanying theme song to mimic the FSU tomahawk chop.
I wonder if we can start stealing all of these types of traditions from all of the schools as a way of showcasing the case for OSU as America’s Team…
USC is soft, Deion is annoying, Oregon is overrated, Georgia is beatable, Texas will choke…
Go Beavs!
Oregon overrated? Wishful thinking?
Overrated, yes… but not by much.
Certainly less than others “ahead” of them.
The tail slap was weird.
I still want Sinatra’s High Hopes as our 4th Q song.
It’s us.
It’s also Boss.
This was a new cheer for me; it definitely reminded of those.
Why not slap the legs while seated or standing?
Tail slap has been around a couple of years, I noticed on the wazzu broadcast cougs making similar gestures, anyone at that game able to explain?
Yeah… it’s weird.
Trosky with a HR in the scrimmage game today vs LBCC. Looking forward to having him back for this season.
so, Duke, inside the ND 45 with two minutes left and the lead, pooch punts to ND, who takes over on their own two, drives the field, and wins the game; only to show that Smith was right when he went for it on 4th down in Pullman in 2019
Yes. It also proves that the left Twix is better than the right Twix.
Alas, both were relegated.
Yeah Smith was right then because any team could have ran through that 2019 defense like shit through a tin horn.
What did Dook in was rushing 3 and playing prevent on 4th and 16 when they were getting pressure on Hartman.
Is de Laura hurt?
With tonight’s results, we probably move up to 16, jumping Duke, Utah and LSU.
Unless the SEC bias comes in and Ole Miss gets more credit for beating LSU than we do for bearing Utah.
#20 ranked SEC team beats a #13 ranked team in a nail biter at home
#19 ranked PAC team beats #10 team handily at home
The SEC team must move up passed the PAC team and be ranked at least 3 spots higher. It is law.
Funny but true. SEC gets so much more credit even in loses. If OSU was #20 and lost like LSU did they’d drop out of rankings. Would not surprise me at all if LSU stayed in the rankings. How else are Alabama and Georgia supposed to play ranked teams? lol
Grain of salt: Utah is not a top 20 team without Rising, Jackson, Pittman, or Kuithe (I.e. their offense).
Beavs won the war of attrition, like they should have, but didn’t really prove much this weekend.
Tell that to UCLA and Florida.
Utah is still Utah.
WSU early 4 pt dogs to UCLA in LA next week. Seriously?
There were also some clouds yesterday. OSU needs to do a better job of keeping those out of the sky. Really embarrassing for the program.
OSU did a really poor job Friday night of keeping the slight breeze out of the stadium
Particularly if rain is permitted.
It was replaced when they did the Northside remodel whatever year that was.
Back to the DJ getting experience in the Lindgren system topic, Eggers says, “Ulagalelei might not wind up on a list of great Oregon State QBs by the time he is through, but he is going to progress as he goes through his first season in an OSU uniform….”
https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/beavs-produce-a-beaut-against-the-utes
Eggers adds this from Golden: “We showed one bad half of football (against Washington State),” Golden said. “That’s all you’re going to get out of us this year. I don’t see us taking any steps back.”
Ya I saw that quote from golden and lived it! They seem focused and angry with themselves about that game.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2023/10/01/college-football-grades-week-5-pat-mcafee-espn-college-gameday/71021927007/
Small note – Maybe don’t have Ryan Leaf as the lead spokesman for WSU
he’s not.
he’s just the low hanging fruit they relate to.
He’s a decent human being with obnoxious opinions.
Sounds like me! ;o)
lol… if decent was not decent
I think McAfee started getting some play because Aaron Rodgers, who I consider a bit of a nut job, became a regular on his show. I don’t know what McAfee has to do with college football, but I’m sure ESPN is doing anything it can to attract ratings. Game Day is unwatchable now.
He cost West Virginia a national championship.
True, but I’m referring to him as a current “talking head”. His own show seems mostly NFL-based with his frat buddies. Just smacks of ESPN trying to be hip by adding him to Game Day.
I love his show, especially when they have Chuck Pagano on to preview games and when they mock Mel Kiper.
He doesn’t do very well with CFB.
Sorry, what does Mel Kiper have to do with anything not college football?
Sorry, spell check is awful!
AP #15 seems about right
https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll
But how does that early line of Beavs by 7.5 over Cal look?
One game at a time, but the schedule sets up so well if they can win the next 5, but don’t think any of the away games will be easy.
USC, UW, UO, and WSU could all be 1-2 loss teams by the time the Beavs play UW/UO in November.
The Cougs have a real easy schedule.
@UCLA, @UO, @UW are the tough ones for them. Should win in Pasadena next week, but they could end up losing all three.
Forgot all their tough ones were away. They do miss SC and Utah. Utes really missing their QB.
I don’t think they’ll beat UCLA
UCLA will beat themselves.
But the Cougs could still Coug it.
As amazing as the season has been for the Pac-12 in general, that all four NW teams are in the top 15 is truly incredible.
Has a 2000-2001 feel to it, doesn’t it?
Makes the Pac breakup all the more painful/sad.
meh… poison leaving the body
BTW, according to official Beavers sports site, Beavers should now be:
13-12-1 all time against Utah!
Woo-hoo! Winning series record!
Beavers Owning Utah!
Is Arizona really good this year or is Washington a paper tiger. The score was a lot closer than you would think. Really hoping for a Pac 2 rematch.
their O is elite.
Their D is okay, for college football, maybe.
Always tough to play a night game in Tucson.
Is DeLura the qb or did Fifita beat him for the starting job?
de Laura’s injured
That’s a cool way to phrase being a rapist.
??
Really?
yeah
Arizona gave a blueprint into how to keep UW’s offense from boat racing their team. Took away all the deep stuff and made them complete everything underneath. A team like Utah with a better defense could do that and then stop them in the redzone. It’ll be hard for any team to stop UW from moving between the 20s.
vs Oregon, we’ll find out if UW’s defense has improved from last year.
They took a page from Beavs vs usc last season. Also Beavs did that against uw last year as well
Beavs will beat uw at home
