Bowl Season and Bray Era Rebuild

996

Not much to say other than it will be a busy month.

Sun Bowl vs Notre Dame

Portal is open today.

Chiles is gone.

No Schedule released yet.

No staff announcements yet, though Gunderson, Devan, Perkins and Hynson appear to be on board.

Not much to be excited about right now, but we move on.

At least Men’s Soccer is relevant and playing in a final 4 this week, also vs Notre Dame.

With Aidan Chiles entering the portal, I do wonder if the plan from Jonathan Smith was always to leave after this season back in fall camp. The playing Chiles just 1 series every game was so random and seemingly pointless but it got him playing time and experience and he would then try and take him wherever he went with the promise that he’d be the starter. He was mentally out the door before the season even began. Decimating your alma mater at this stage is some super villain shit and I think it’s obvious this was planned for a while

A lot of people saying it’s just business. That may be true, but there was a time when college football wasn’t just business. It meant a lot more to fans, players, and coaches. Those days are gone. It’s really hard to have any emotional connection to the sport anymore.

      • 12

People’s priorities get sideways when too much money is involved. That’s all there is to it.

Part of me is sympathetic to the “can’t blame him for taking the money” response, but do we want to live in a society where everyone just takes the money? The people that study this sort of thing caution against that kind of hyper-individualistic decision making, warning that it erodes societal trust. Some of these guys we’re talking about are teenagers and they’re all still in a very formative time of life, making choices that will shape their identity in the years to come. You make a major decision like that at 19/20 years old and it sets a precedent going forward in your life.

Look at who is coming to the aid of the program right now: it’s all loyal alumni and former players. Guys who committed for the long haul. Do you think there will be that same type of guy 10-20 years from now when college football is all about what you can grab for yourself and spending 1-2 years here and there before moving on? I doubt it.

You know who didn’t take the money? Pat Casey, the single most decorated individual in the history of Beaver athletics. Would he have accomplished what he did at Notre Dame or wherever else if he had bolted when a more lucrative opportunity came along? I doubt it.

        • 12

Smith was set to make 5 million a year at OSU. That’s more than most people make in their whole life. In one year. Coaching amateur athletes. I do blame him if it was about money. More money is always good, but if you’re already making 5 million a year? At least for me, with that level of income, more money will actually take the backseat to other factors.

    • JS had promised Chiles playing time and an opportunity to compete for the starting job to get him to commit and enroll early, and then they brought DJU in from the portal (oops). Chiles alluded to this a couple of times in interviews about playing the 3rd series.

I remember at the start of fall camp seeing JS reaction to the Pac-12 exodus and you could see his disgust, and I think he knew he was gone then just didn’t want to admit it. Fair to assume that in the back of his mind that he felt confident that if he did leave that Chiles would transfer with him if he kept him happy.

        4

I heard from Chiles neighbor/friend- everyone on the team knows he’s the truth- will probably win a heisman. Won’t leave, unless smith does, and he will follow smith wherever he goes

        • I’m still not convinced the Smith/Lindgren duo is any good at developing QBs.
Chiles and DJ both fell into their laps. Heck, DJ tried contacting them about transferring to OSU and they didn’t even get back to him for about a week. And then Chiles wasn’t highly regarded at the time they recruited him, but he was their fall back plan after several guys denied OSU and went to other schools. They lucked out that Chiles was healthy his senior year and started to show his true potential and he stayed committed. But I haven’t seen much in the way of progress/growth from any QB under Smith/Lindgren.
Nolan regressed. Gulbranson wasn’t allowed to throw much. Gebbia never lived up to his potential (injuries or not). DJ was basically the same guy he was at Clemson, but playing in a slower tempo huddle offense and under center. But he still didn’t show growth in his throwing technique and never had touch on the short throws.
Maybe Chiles will magically flip the trend, but I’m highly doubt they have him in the Heisman conversation with that dumpster fire roster. The rebuild at MSU will take at least 3 years.

          • They turned Luton into a NFL QB. That’s something.

I think Lindgren does a good job scheming for his QB. He’s done a really good job getting the most out of lower-rated recruits because he and JS have been so bad at recruiting QB’s.

These guys are also the QB geniuses that started Sam Noyer after converting him back from safety. That lasted all of two quarters.

          • 11

Damn, forgot about Noyer too. They missed way more often than they’ve hit. And the hits have been almost accidental.

And Hodgins made Luton an NFL QB more than anything. His throws were rarely on target but Hodgins had such an impressive catch radius that he masked those deficiencies.

          • 2
            4

BiOH: you are one of the better contributors here and that’s why I’m disappointed with “they made Luton into an NFL qb.” Brady, Rodgers, Cousins, Herbert, Allen, etc. Those are NFL quarterbacks. Guys like Mannion and Luton might have gotten NFL paychecks, but they were not NFL “quarterbacks,” as the term is conventionally understood. Clip board holders.

          • Disagree. Guys like Mannion and Luton actually represent the average NFL QB. You just named top quartile NFL QB’s.

Regardless, to get drafted by NFL evaluators and start games in the NFL is a rare thing. There’s no way that would have happened for Luton if he had stayed at Idaho or finished his career being coached by McGiven or whoever GA’s QB coach was. It’s also not something you just luck into. JS and Lindgren deserve some credit for that.

        • Is it a certainty that Chiles is joined at the hip with Coach Smith? I mean, looking at all the (big) names in the portal, it seems like this will be a frenzy to find a QB for many big time programs. If I was Chiles, I might wait a bit and see if someone bigger/better than Michigan State offered me a shot…

      2

I agree that he definitely always considered OSU as a stepping stone position despite his “dream job” propaganda, especially after the pac12 demise.

      Few key timeline events

      – MSU job opened up same week we lose to WSU, coaching staff looked unprepared
      – MSU rumored to first contact smith same week as UA loss, JS responsible for an all-time coaching blunder
      – JS announces he interviewed for MSU job on thanksgiving, decides to not play Chiles for first time all season the next day during civil war, team looks deflated and unprepared
      – MSU announces JS as coach less than 24 hours after brutal rivalry game loss
      – coaches leave, recruits decommit, Chiles enters portal

I think it’s safe to say now that we are on the wrong side of one of the most egregious tampering “scandals” in recent CFB memory. From realignment to JS not playing players he knew he would pursue in the portal, people have tampered with the success of our program in a very foul and unfair manner. JS not playing Chiles knowing he would later poach him is so disgusting to me, I think it’s worse than USC and others straight up paying players. How is a coach allowed to do something like that without repercussions? Given the timeline, how else was he restricting our success once he knew he was leaving? Were there other players that should’ve got playing time that didn’t? Was he recruiting players to OSU or to himself knowing he wouldn’t be here come signing day? Was he actually putting in the correct amount of time to game plan or was he checked out? He’s Judas for sure…

      • I had thought he interviewed during the bye week but perhaps I’m wrong. That puts him squarely in convo’s before U of A. Regardless, at the very least every action taken since Zona is rightfully viewed with an * next to it. Velling’s usage dropped drastically last 3 games. Chiles no time in CW. There’s no excuse for some of the calls he’s made since the Zona game. Now, I don’t think he made decisions to purposefully lose games, but I think he absolutely made some coaching decisions and personnel decisions that he wouldn’t have made if he wasn’t going to leave.

    • If Smith had this nefarious idea to leave when the T 8 jumped ship. (which shows by his actions) By his fiduciary responsibility he should have refused his pay during the season. He was paid to give his best to OSU, and he was derelict in his responsibilities. Why not try to run the kicker in from the 20, I won’t be here next year anyway. Why not try an onside kick. OSU has a mantra “favorite team is Beavers, 2nd favorite team, anyone playing the ducks” we can add a 3rd team “anyone playing a Johnathon Smith team”.

      • Exactly. Weird calls, even for him, and personnel decisions last 3 or 4 weeks. He wasn’t acting like a guy who was going to be there next year

  2. Can’t players come back after they’ve declared for the portal? Don’t get me wrong Chiles is gone and probably getting a million dollars. But it doesn’t seem like there will be a huge DJU market out there. Seems mutually beneficial for OSU to take him back. Sure he isn’t amazing but with his size, comfort from being at OSU another year I could see him really tearing apart the lower level competition next year at OSU. Probably only have to spend a couple hundred K to be high bid on that one.

    • I don’t know why everyone has this impression that DJ is an average CFB QB. He’s a top 20 P5 QB in just about every statistical category.

We’re truly spoiled if we’ve forgotten how bad QB play can be.

      • He’s solid, but he needs an extra year under the West Coast offense if he wants to play at the next level. The processing is a little slow.

If OSU had any sort of a receiving back or utilized there tight ends consistently his numbers would look a lot better.

      • Beavs had no receiver who could win a 50-50 ball down the field and their 2 receivers were tiny and Lindgren was mostly clueless as a play caller. He still had a pretty good year. If Aidan is gone and you can bring back DJ, you got to do it. Ben would probably be okay against lower competition for the most part but having Aidan or DJ would raise the ceiling for next year’s team if they can retain most of the key potential returning defenders

      • He’s good but I think his stats only tell part of the story. He was in a good position with a run first offense, lots of stuff underneath and a great OL. I don’t have access to the more advanced stats but I would hazard to guess his down the field stats are lower half. I mean look at a guy like Cam Ward, his QBR is borderline top 50 and he is clearly considered a better prospect than DJU. I guess we shall see but I’m not so sure there is a huge market for him when you look at how many QBs are in the portal.

      • 1
        3

DJ was not the “difference maker” everyone thought he might be. a marginal upgrade over Gulbranson, and then only because of his running ability, which was formidable.

      • A receiver or two like Ofunze(sp?) at UW could have made a huge difference, even Isiah Hodgins…but that doesn’t explain how he could skip short passes out to the flat….

Because of his size and arm, he’ll get on an NFL roster….

      • DJU’s biggest issue was not taking what the defense gave him. Hence the terrible completion percentage. He could have taken a page out of Nix’s book there. So many times he threw deep when he should have checked it down to get us some yards.

    • Yes they can come back if the school wants them back. The scholarship does not have to be honored once you put your name in the portal. Even if you pull your name out they still don’t have to honor it.

Shame the Beaver roster may be decimated by Sun Bowl. Even though Sun Bowl sucks, a win over #16 ND would likely be good for moving up to their #16 spot, and it would be nice to remain undefeated against ND. I hope Fenwick plays and gas a big game, but that seems unlikely with the Oline missing starters and Fuaga skipping bowl game.

It will be humorous if Nix skips bowl game, and Liberty(?!?) boat races the Ducks. I just saw Liberty’s ridiculous offensive numbers. Yeah, its Conf USA, but they’ll have a month to prepare ….

Hope the staff can hold onto Howard and McCoy, need sime impact Dline and CB to build around. Hopefully Bray’s commitment to the program pays off on D side of ball.

  4. Let’s all remember, particularly today, football is a team sport. One player rarely changes the trajectory of season. There are tons of examples of great players on teams that were mediocre at best. Its a team game. I’d take a well coached team of 3 star guys over a poorly coached team with a few big stars.

recalling that long-ago game against Notre Dame – question to ocho cinco, ‘honor to be play Notre Dame? ‘ oc: ”they should be honored to play Oregon State.”

  6. 17

Rumor is Coach Legi got caught helping JS/MSU recruit in prep of him leaving to join them in East Lansing after the bowl game. Bray kicked him to the curb and he got the good ole walk of shame escort out of Valley.

“As the Beavs turn.” will be back with a new episode tomorrow. Will Cookus threaten to expose the long expired Reser frozen burritos they feed the walk-ons in a bid to save his job?

Someone who’s still on the team but we never hear about anymore is Throckmorton. I assume there’s a reason he’s not been playing over others, but might be good to get him some reps in the bowl game as well?

        • 2
          1

It seems as though you are not able to understand things unless they are said directly. Myself stating that “I assume there’s a reason he’s not been playing over others” implies that it is known that there were better options at QB. Now that we’re down to him, BG, and a walk on Montiel, it is possible he will get more looks.

          • 2
            3

Yes, it does help you to communicate more effectively, if you don’t write opaque messages.

Maybe you are a student. You’re learning.

    • Seems like that would be an upgrade to get him for 2 years as an experienced starter with all of Chiles tools and a bigger guy with wheels.

Chiles may be more polished as a passer but that is yet to be seen on the college level I guess. I think I’d take a trade of DJ for Green given what DjJ did this year. And if he is buddies with DM, it means DM is already recruiting his guys to help bridge the 2 year window at least a good sign.

  8. 2
    2

Just something I noticed today. Chiles looks good as a college prospect but I don’t seem him ever being elite. Unless he really reworks his throwing motion he is gonna have trouble, watch for fumbles. He almost points the ball at the ground and does a weird cocking motion when he throws. Not a very quick release and with the wacky motion I think he’s gonna struggle against strong fronts. This will be really apparent if he goes to MSU who is rebuilding. Maybe I am wrong and he does well but at the NFL level he will get ate up. Just my two cents.

  9. 10

I am seeing rumors that Oregon State is in contact with Leavitt. Does that mean the new staff is actually going to go after talented players from our state that actually want to play for us?

  10. By similar token I wonder if UCLA would have concern given their quarterback coach has come over to us? There’s at least three quarter back prospects he was the primary recruiter for.

  11. 5
    1

RE the Heismann (i.e. the WB with the best stats):

“Each of the quarterback finalists in 2023 has played at least five seasons and are transfers from previous schools.”

I’d rather see Daniels than Nix…

  12. TB on Canzano – kids are getting phone calls all the time – not supposed to be contacted until after they enter the portal – but there is no rule enforcement. “Everybody knows it’s happening.” One can only hope and assume he and staff aren’t making pre-announcement calls.

  13. Coach Slime getting some free advertising again:

“It works to his advantage that Season 2 of “Coach Prime” on Amazon starts Thursday, the same week the portal opens, helping serve as a high-profile recruiting advertisement for the Colorado football program with its behind-the-scenes look at Sanders’ first season at Boulder in 2023. Sanders and his agents have editorial control over the project. That’s the goal of it.

“It’s going to instill hope in a multitude of people,” Sanders said via Zoom. “I love everything about it. It helps us recruit. It helps us establish who these young men are.””

    • Honestly, FSU should just show up wherever Alabama is playing anyway. It is so obvious what happened.

Had Georgia won the playoff would have been the 4 undefeated teams but once Georgia lost the committee had to find a way to justify putting Alabama in which required also putting Texas in so FSU was out.

Just total bullshit and while the CFP never really had any credibility, they negative credibility now. It is all out in the open now.

  14. Bray was hired Wednesday and over half his coaching staff is finalized. Props to him because they need to fill it out ASAP and hit recruiting/the portal today. The new coaches also have to evaluate the current roster.

    • 5
      1

Also good to see such limited action in the portal so far from the Oregon St locker room. It seems like a pretty unified group apart from the qbs who were given all of the snaps last year.
It almost seems like the team quietly favors Gulbranson and JS missed it because he doesn’t seem to have much traction or following within the team at this point. Of course some may be waiting until the latter portal period. But so far so good for Bray and company.

Also it appears to Mama Machado that the Legi tampering rumors were not true and he’s been having significant family issues.

Sorry Coach. Dick move on my part to believe rumors for someone who turned around OSU’s worst position group. I hope everything works out.

  15. 14

In the nobody cares column…MBB is leading a 3-5 Cal Poly team 41-38 with about 7 minutes left. Yes, I going to get my money’s worth out of the P-12 Network and ride this bitch until the bitter end.

  16. 2
    1

Mama Machado on the Twitter Spaces said KHJ is her 99% pick to be named the next DC.

What style defense does he run? How has UNLV looked under his watch?

  17. Anyone know how our new assistant coach salary pool compares to this past season? If it’s the same or bigger (which I thought it wouldbe given we’re saving on the HC salary), I sure would hope for some splashier hires than what we’re seeing/hearing so far.

    • We don’t need splashy hires right now. Player retention is priority #1, we already have a good team in the locker room. Bray has been focused on guys that know Corvallis/OSU (because they’re alums) and that can recruit their asses off. It’s a very recruiting heavy staff so far, but Gundy is a good and experienced offensive coach, especially for his age. He’s already been a passing game coordinator. He’s been coaching for 10+ seasons, full time position coach since 2017. He’s ready. It’s a good hire, if not “splashy”.

Still wouldn’t be surprised if we see Riley in some kind of “analyst” capacity or TE/Special teams. You’d think being in Corvallis full time would be a better gig for him so he could be close to Dee (sad situation).

      DL is the big ?

    • Does the KHJ rumors have any legs or is that just who Angie wants? Seems like that would be a very good hire for bray with fit, recruiting and experience.

      • 1
        10

        Fuck KHJ.
He’s a whore, and he can go whore somewhere else.

I mean, he’s probably a decent person. But he chases the money and has absolutely zero loyalty to OSU, and even less so in his actions.

          • 1
            1

When you can recruit, you fail upward in college football.

Eddie Gran has “coached” some All-Americans as well.

It didn’t make him a great or even good OC.

          • I wouldn’t expect it, regardless of the job he does, which will likely be him being a great recruiter and the not great coach he’s always been.

          • He’s a recruiting specialist, not an actual coach–at least, not one who does anything of note.

He just needs to have that tag, in order for the NCAA to allow him to recruit.

          • For context, just look back on when he was hired by the Ducks.

I think the talk was about how he knew Taggart would succeed there, and he wanted to learn and succeed within that environment.

The truth is the Ducks just wanted him for his recruiting abilities, as we all did. But he made that choice, instead of going to a program that would teach him to actually coach. I think he even said he “did my homework” on Taggart–words that did not age well.

          • Plenty of teams operate that way. I’m not saying it’s ideal, but it’s not crazy. If you can reallocate some of the “traditional” HC responsibilities to someone else, it doesn’t necessarily have to result in a significant workload increase for the HC.

          • You better be damn sure of your abilities.

And if you want a recruiter as your DC, you should hire an elite recruiter, like Dan Lanning did.

If this is that, fine. Maybe we need someone who can sell ice cubes to polar bears.

But let’s not pretend it will be anything else.

  18. 4
    1

I do wonder if Riley will be involved. His spring league team was “axed” from the UXFL – nothing closer to the west coast than Texas.

And as much as I enjoy and appreciate the “ownership” the former players have taken in the program the last 20 years – someone of an older age might be good to have around to gladhand the donors.

I’d really like to find out more about the Smith situation. The way he left seems almost like he had some sort of personal beef with the university. You wouldn’t torch your legacy/image over some minor feud with an AD. He could have said all the right things etc. – but he seemed to go out of his way NOT to. Looking forward to a bowl match-up down the road.

  19. MBB wins a 2OT game against Cal Poly with 0 made 3pters (0/10) and 52 out of 70 points in the paint (yes it took 2 OT’s to get to 70).

  20. So seeing some posts on X that Legi was recruiting…not family issues. The poster said their source was a player on the defense and another poster is backing that up. I always found it odd that he would stick around if he was taking the MSU job.

      • I never saw it denied that he was working on recruiting. What seems to be the confusing part is was he recruiting current OSU players to MSU or was he recruiting high school players, possibly portal players, etc to MSU. But yeah, not a good look.

      • From what I gather, they did have a story on it but then in her Spaces last night said it was family issues or something to that affect. However, these other posts were done after her Spaces and double down on the recruiting piece. Again, EVEN IF, some coaches do stay thru bowl out of the goodness of their heart, it seems very unlikely that Legi is the only 1 on the staff that stayed? With Traitor Smith taking most the offensive staff, recruits, Chiles and potentially other current players, they throw us a bone and say, sure Legi can stay to help out. Nah, I don’t buy that shit. And if Legi was recruiting, regardless of the current players or the HS players, it shouldn’t be done on our dime, at our facilities and resources, etc.

    • There are always coaches who stick around for the postseason even if they are leaving for a new job. They do it out of loyalty to the players they coached. But clearly something more important came up. Doesn’t really matter what the reason was.

  21. In the interview, Bray seemed to indicate his DC hire was outside his coaching family. He mentioned it was someone he knew from coaching clinics.

Also with Legi gone and most of the staff hired, seems like Bray or any of the newly hired assistants might be able to help with the bowl game prep.

  22. Ncaa President Charlie Baker (a businessman and politician) proposes a new subdivision for top schools.
    • ?The formation of a new subdivision made up of institutions with the highest resources that can directly compensate athletes through an “enhanced educational trust fund,” which requires the schools that opt into it an investment of at least $30,000 per year per athlete for at least half of the school’s eligible athletes. Schools would have to adhere to Title IX, providing equal monetary opportunities to both female and male athletes.
    • ?Schools in the new subdivision could create their own rules separate from the rest of D-I, and those rules would allow them the ability to address policies such as scholarship limits and roster size as well as transfers and NIL.
    • ?Any Division I school would be able to enter into an NIL deal with its athletes directly, which is not currently permissible.
    • ?Any Division I school would be able to distribute to any athlete funding related to educational benefits without any caps on such compensation.

edit: This is a summary from The Athletic article.
Rug pulled for the smaller schools.

    • Yeah, I feel like this is where college football is headed – mega conference/division of the wealthiest teams (20? 30 schools?) that get all the TV money and best players. Relegates the rest of us (yes, I fear OSU is in the second tier) to the JV scraps – if those even exist. May mean that in 10 years, nobody will even get a chance to see Oregon State on TV for football because they’re not in this “super division” with the likes of Georgia, Texas, Alabama, etc.

      • That’s what Chip Kelly suggested, create a conference with 20-30 some schools, with geographic distribution and ties, pay them, and have a playoff system.

“College” football will be dead. They’ll have some loose affiliation with universities to use their facilities.

The American viewer’s appetite for American football is astounding. There will a 32 team NFL, and similarly sized “college” professional league.

IF OSU/WSU get a significant settlement, should OSU use a majority of it to pay down Reser and AD debt? Seems like very lean times are coming.

      • I actually wouldn’t have a problem with this system if they create a real promotion/relegation model, where smaller schools at least have an opportunity to play their way in. Conversely, the big schools with big budgets need to be held accountable based on the competence of their programs. If they aren’t competent, and the program doesn’t perform, they should be subject to relegation. For example, why should Indiana football be allowed to reap all these financial rewards? The school doesn’t invest in football or seriously try to compete.

          • You wouldn’t think so but if there was a way to structure it where it financially incentivized the true blue bloods then I think it’s possible. If say, the super league had 40 teams, the biggest programs like Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, etc would never be at any real risk of dropping out. So if the new relegation league actually attracted more overall interest and brought in more money, they may jump at the chance to cash in on that knowing that they will always at least be near the top of the pecking order. I’m sure schools like Illinois, Iowa or Arkansas would never want it because they would be at risk of falling down a level. But their opinion wouldn’t matter if the big boys were convinced.

      • 5
        1

If it’s any consolation, most current college football fans won’t be watching Georgia, Texas, or Bama on TV, either.

I certainly have no interest in a minor league.

If these schools want to segregate themselves from the NCAA, they should just do so. The rest of us don’t need to subsidize their football programs by continuing to allow them be a part of an association they clearly don’t want to be a part of.

        • This is why I think the relegation league is actually possible. Currently the blue blood programs benefit not only from their own rabid fan bases, but the interest level generated by the over 100 different D1 programs. When the bowls and playoffs come around, they get to cash in when ratings reflect that fans of less successful programs are also watching the biggest games. If the blue bloods end up truly isolating themselves, they will turn off probably like a third of the fans currently tuning in to their biggest games. It would be a bad financial decision IMO. On the other hand, if there was a super league where the champion of the second level league got promoted every year, everyone would probably remain invested.

They can go away, is what they can do.

I don’t want to see any of their colors on my screen in any sport. They’re all the color of money, and it’s money made off our participation, up to now.

We need for them to go off on their own, if only to not have them whining to all of us about their largesse not being large enough.

          • It’s always been about money. As a fan the best thing would be to have the highest level and most interesting competition. Playing for nothing but the mountain west every year is not interesting, as Angry has stated many times. It truly will be the death of the program. I’m not ready to foreclose on the future just yet. If any opportunity still exists to compete at the highest level we should leave the door open.

          • If there’s no way to play your way in to the top tier I would agree. But if a Tier 2 championship also came with promotion I would follow it.

          • The whole of the NCAA accepting the rich schools’ decisions, because money, needs to stop.

They aren’t going to share any of it with any of us, ever. They don’t want to share it with some they’re currently sharing with.

We need to put them on their own lifeboat and push them away from the ship, before they scuttle it all.

          • No, it’s about my team.

If my team isn’t playing your team, I have zero interest in your higher level (not highest, btw). I already have the NFL.

And I’m not going to be a part of an association with entities who think they are above all others, for reasons antithetical to sport and inclusion. They want to take their ball and go home?

Take it all, and go. NOBODY is stopping you.

Just don’t cry on your money, when you watch us have all our fun in March Madness or the CWS… or when we have our own football tourney and crown the first ever national champion.

            Just.Go.Away.

      • 2
        1

I’d be all for those top 20-30 schools only playing each other then and I hope the networks then stand firm on that. Nobody gives a shit about exhibition games…this needs to be battle dome. You want to spend that much money building your roster? No more freebies.

    • The Knight Commission recommendation of splitting college football into a separate entity was a much better idea. All they need to do is put in a salary cap and actually enforce the current rules.

      • 2
        2

The idea that anyone is above anyone else, because money, is ludicrous.

If they want money, go get it. Nobody is stopping them. They can go create their own NAIA, and leave the rest of us alone.

    • Scary part of this is “address polices such as scholarships” which means big schools would raise scholarship limit to 125. With 24 schools in the conference that is 960 extra scholarships not going to the schools left behind.

  23. Not sure if this was posted previously…I know Brock Huard got some hate recently (from me included) for his slobbering over the Ducks on the CW broadcast but he had a pretty good rant on a podcast last week about the injustice done to WSU and OSU. He sounds pretty emotional about it, tbh. Here’s the YouTube link.

    https://youtu.be/o__3vLJbBUs?feature=shared

    • That sucks. Hope he doesn’t go to MSU….but the lure of big stadiums and his own chair with heating/cooling/massage functions may be too much…

    • PFF had him as our #4 CB, #5 if you include Andre Jordan (lower snap count). He probably got some honesty in his exit talk with Perkins.

It hurts to lose depth at a position like that, but I would say all the guys that played there played okay, none of them stood out.

      • Consider his situation.

A frosh on some of the best WRs in the country, and he held his own pretty well.

I think a lot of the DBs deserve some credit for keeping it together this year, through a lot of injuries.

        • Yeah, true freshman. I’d expect Cooper Jr and Robinson to be ahead of him. McCoy was great for being a true frosh! Between him, Noble Thomas, Skyler Thomas (granted he makes a full recovery) and Arnold the secondary was looking super talented. Add in the possibility of Julian being healthy and it’s a good rotation. While the overall # of guys we have in the portal currently isn’t super high (yet) they are all important pieces.

    • He might stay, if we get the DC I’ve talked myself into thinking we might get.

He could be elite, set a couple records, and leave early for the League.

          • Intriguing for sure.
Bray said to Canzano that he already has his defensive coaches just not announced… delaying because of playoffs? Which level?
Breckterfield is at UW as Dline coach with another 4 weeks before they are done playing.
Bradford is DC at University of Montana and they are in semifinals of FCS playoffs with a few more weeks to go before they finish if they keep winning. ( Vidlak is the starting qb for Montana apparently)

          • I would take Harbaugh as well.

I like the focus on coaches who have had success at every stop and command respect.

Plus, he’s undefeated as a HC on the FBS level.

          • It would make sense, too, if KHJ came in as DB coach, learned from him, and took over as DC in 2 or 3 years when Bradford gets hired away.

I’m thinking Bray may know someone in Montana who is defensive minded and watches a lot of Griz football, because it’s just fun to watch. I imagine that conversation might have gone something like, “You need to take a look at this guy.”

And the “coaching clinics” connection makes sense, since his overlap with Bray as a younger position coach/GA-type in the Pac 12 fits.

I know people often talk about Inoke, but I feel like he would be more than a DL coach, if anyone saw that in him. He can recruit some players, but I don’t see all-world play out of them.

Then again, maybe my sample is skewed, because I’ve concentrated on his unit most closely when they went up against our O-line. And that might not be fair.

          • I feel we can do better than Bradford. Interesting idea, but I would rather see Harbaugh or Lake.

Not sure how realistic those two are, but we seem to have room in the budget

          • I don’t disagree.

But this conversation is at least more uplifting than than the rumors above.

Those just feel like everyone is settling for something not potentially great, because it’s easy.

  24. Just saw a list of schools portal numbers. Apparently we have the least amount of players in the portal for a power 5 school but the list said we have 7 players entered. That number doesn’t sound right, can anyone confirm?

  25. “When three bowls in the ACC’s second tier of tie-ins got the opportunity to pick Notre Dame, all three had the Fighting Irish as their top choice. So, according to the conference’s rules, the three bowls put their names in a hat with the ACC’s attorney drawing out the winner.

Those three bowls were the Sun Bowl, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.

When the ACC announced the Sun Bowl won the drawing, its executive director, Bernie Olivas, made the announcement at the bowl’s selection party to a cheering crowd. The news was so unexpected that staff didn’t have a Notre Dame helmet on hand, according to KTSM news.

Within a day, tickets were sold out.”

So an undermanned OSU team will face ND with the homefield advantage?

Hope they can focus and take advantage of the opportunity…

Feels pretty low to take a job at another school and float NIL money to the key handful of guys you want to poach.

I bet Bray is beyond ticked at JS for trying to steal the main guys off the defensive side now. Kind of understandable with Chiles but cmon. Go find your new guys from the Midwest.

Bray was pretty blunt about his dislike with the portal situation and seems ready to deal with the situation straightforward. If guys want to leave only for money then goodbye. Next guy up…

I like Bray much more after only a couple of interviews than I ever liked JS. JS always had a bit of hokeyness to his look and speaking. Bray is all business and sounds like a younger Pat Casey. I like it.

      • 8
        3

I’ve spoken about JS’ character flaws and “tells” — psycho analyzing him, I knew he wasn’t loyal to Beaver nation — his gambling and lack of emotion with losing was odd. He is loyal to no one but himself. Thought he was a family guy and wouldn’t move his family, or wait for the USC dream job….fucking weird dude — Michigan State of all places.
He knows he can’t do it without his coaches because he’s full of shit and lacks balance in his thinking especially the ability to learn from his/their mistakes (probably thinks he hasn’t made any, he’s always gambling with house money and has nothing to lose).
MSU is in for a real treat with the ceiling being 9-3 and 8-4 seasons, similar to Gary Anderson, his talented coaches/players masked his own shortcomings, he’ll be exposed soon enough for the fraud that he is. Good recruiter and convincing with his talk and mannerisms, but it is just an act, he’s a good actor and basically a liar — he has no real passion for his work, really just a vanilla guy looking for the next pay day….Urban Meyer at least was a good coach, he falls into the same category. Better ripping off the band-aid now, goddamn he found a way to leave the “family” in dire-straits — he’s a fucking jackass!!!!

    • They don’t seem like ones to leave but who knows. Where is this rumor coming from? Seems like there’s been too many rumors and not enough facts.

    • I talked to Akili yesterday, he plans on making the bowl trip but won’t be able to play. Seems weird to also put name on portal

      • I’ve been surprised that Chiles and McCoy are the only pre-bowl portal defectors so far, hard to believe there won’t be at least a few more. I also imagine that there is a contingent of players that want to stay with the team for one last ride in the bowl game but are also figuring out their options and plan to hit the portal and cash in after the game. It would make sense for the Arnold brothers to fit into that category, they’ve had quite the ride.

If Bray and co. can somehow limit the portal exodus damage to something like 10-15 players or less when it’s all said and done it’s a massive W and makes their job at restocking so much easier.

        • Waiting til after thr bowl game to enter the portal makes no sense. Bowl game is on the friday before new years, then new years day is Monday no one will be entering anybody that day. So Tuesday after the bowl is the first day to get in, but Wednesday the portal closes until April.

          • Yeah, unless they are already talking to agents/teams and figuring out their next move without actually being in the portal officially, which Bray himself said on Clownzano yesterday is exactly what is happening all over college football.

          • True, but as of today there are 1200 players in the portal and counting. I’m guessing only the top recruits are getting calls.

  26. Euhus on Twitter saying the Legi recruiting thing didn’t happen. Random fan claiming a player told him it’s true. We’ll probably never know.

    • News update in that article is that OSU lost to Oregon in the PAC12 title game. Oh well, we were so close to winning it. DJ gets to go back to ACC after leading Beavs to a conference title game appearance.

Nice to see how detail oriented online sports reporters are these days. Top notch investigative reporting.

Locked on pac 12 suggested de Laura as a possible transfer option. I thought he would have to sit but could be wrong. Not the best option as a starter but would be good to have in the room and compete.

  28. 1
    1

So the jury is still out for me on Perkins and so I’m ok with him staying but what about Hynson and Cookus? I think special teams have been a weakness since smith came here aside from two great returners that sometimes made questionable decisions. This year was the first in the whole time the staff has been here that they have a solid kicker. I think Cookus is a good recruiter especially in state but idk that he’s a good fit on special teams. I would rather see him moved to safeties instead.

As for Hynson he’s the receivers coach and passing game coordinator. The receivers since he’s gotten here have struggled with drops, fumbles and just getting open. They have all been pretty undersized as well. Being a passing game coordinator the passing game has always been the Achilles heel of this offense aside from when there was Luton and Hodgins. I think he’s a pretty good recruiter aside from getting small receivers.

What do you guys think about these coaches and are you happy with having them on staff.

    • 1
      1

Special teams would look better if Smith hadn’t done stupid shit like call fake field goal sneaks from 20 yards out or unnecessary onside kicks.
The main area that was weaker than average this year was punting, but in other years that has been the strength, so if feels like a personnel issue more than anything.
Sappinton was better than I expected.

  29. 3
    2

I’ve seen some people hinting that the next 2 portal names will hurt…that’s perhaps alluding to the Arnold bros as mentioned above. That would be awful. Thin in the secondary already and Easton would’ve been the 2nd or 3rd best player on the team. Big Dave U mentioned that he wanted DJ to stay on Corvo but when Traitor Smith left, that changed plans. If DJ had stuck around regardless of Traitor Smith leaving, I think that would’ve gone a long way even from just a locker room perspective. We’re going to have a super young team if we do end up convincing people to stay and God knows what portal or juco stuff we can get. I don’t envy Bray and with the shit he’s probably dealing with regarding all the asshat coaches that are going to MSU, he’s probably grossly underpaid at $2 mill.

    • I don’t see the Beavs and this staff should have extra trouble getting guys via the portal. Our situation is up in the air but transfers sometimes just want a season to shine. I could see guys wanting to play for a top 25 team with the chance to be in the playoffs for their final year or two. But then again these young kids always surprise me and what they want one sec is completely different than the next. I hope Bray will be selling their path to the playoffs.

    • I understand what you are saying, but your “underpaid” remark really stuck with me. How is it that we’ve gotten to a point with this sport that being paid 2 million dollars a year to coach 17-23 year old AMATEUR student athletes in a GAME of all things has become an underpaid position and not enough for a lot of coaches around the country to stick around? Even Murthy doesn’t make close to that much, and, let’s face it, her job is many times more important overall than a sports coach.

      • It’s an investment in generating revenue. College football got popular enough that people are willing to spend millions on it. Teams get more of those millions if they are good, so they invest a smaller portion in a coach in order to get a bigger piece of the overall pie.

Harbaugh has it right with paying the coaches less money and the players more.

        • Yes, love it or hate it, college sports (primarily football for most schools) brings in too much revenue in various ways to the University and local economy to ignore and not have an exciting successful product. Especially in our case where the most success we have in sports are programs that don’t make profit. I think Baseball might be getting closer to breaking even? We certainly aren’t going to make revenue or increase our student enrollment with the Men’s Basketball program. Just like any job, some people make way too much for what they do (Wayne Tinkle for example) and some don’t make enough. Now, maybe Murthy is underpaid for what her position entails too.

  30. Am I the only one that thinks we’ll be better off in a couple years?

    JS records at OSU:

    2-10
    5-7
    2-5
    7-6
    10-3*
    8-4*

    34-35

    *18-7 with Bray at DC

To me JS leaving only stung because of not being able to retain players and losing Michalzik and Blue Adams.

    • 100% agree- TB will have a better overall record by far than smith had. And if he can dial in qb and oline (I think DeVan is going to be really good), could be a much better hc overall

    • Those are all pac12 wins. Bray may win more (and that’s a maybe) in the near term, but OSU is about to be relegated to playing high school squads half the time.

      • At least we beat Stanford by more than Sac State did.

But you’re correct. We won’t end up in a conference with NMSU, who did what Bama and UGA couldn’t do–handily beat a middling SEC team.

  31. I got to thinking the other day about how the current situation harks back to the 1930s, when the major universities would buy top athletes for their football teams.

  32. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/mind-of-mike-college-football-as-we-know-it-is-dead/ar-AA1kWTRk?ocid=socialshare

I’m pissed about losing my favorite team to the modern era of college football. This article really sums it up well about what’s going on.
Bowl games now are completely meaningless outside of the playoff. Lots of players either opt out or hit the portal.
In the past, I would have considered making the trip to El Paso to see them take down the Irish. Now I’m not sure if I’ll even watch the game due to lack of team/coach etc..

*My one bowl game experience was a heart breaker at the Alamo bowl vs Texas. Still had a great time with my dad hanging out in San Antonio.

    • That is my thoughts too. The team that played all year is a shell of a team. With hold outs for NFL and portal transfers. I was going to go but not sure if it is worth it we don’t know who will even play.

    • I think we all suffer from a bit of revisionist nostalgia about how college football “used to be”. The nobility of the “student athletes” etc. In reality, there’s always been a dark side to the sport. Money has always been the driver and players were always getting paid. It was just done under the table, and at a smaller scale. What we have now at least is transparency. I have no issue with players seeking as much compensation as they can possibly get .It’s a dangerous sport and their careers could end at any time before the big NFL pay day comes. Any person that provides their labor as part of an income generating activity deserves a fair share of the profits. College football just needs to regulate the transfer portal so that players aren’t constantly auctioning themselves off. It’s too disruptive to rosters and makes it basically impossible for programs with fewer resources to retain talent.

      • I don’t recall if the post was here or on X but rang true. We thrived in finding the 3* guys and coaching them to 4/5* and now the “rich” schools can just sit back, let schools like OSU develop talent and then poach em. Sure this was happening to some extent before but not nearly the same with the portal rules now. Those top schools will still go hard after the HS talent but it’s definitely not as important now when you can just go and buy a player for a year if you missed out on your top recruit. I see Yuck fans dragging UW since the UW class isn’t at the top like some of the other Big10 schools and guess what? It won’t matter. They can drop several million to replace a few spots and presto! Problem solved.

Saw a post that said Utah needs to get their NIL to $7.5 mill to win the Big 12 next year. For a year. We’ve been scratching and clawing our way to get to $1 mill (now $2 mill with the donation match) but there’s no way to compete with that year in and year out. We’re going to have to stretch that $2 mill out for years.

        • The 2 million that was generated via social media, is only a small % of what is available. It is a lot more than 2 mil being used to retain players

          • Fair point but it’s still knowhere close of us being able to continuously fill those coffers at levels to be in the ballpark or you’d see some of these guys stick around.

        • Dickert’s comment was OSU has 10x what WSU has, the “mid-tier” PAC schools were something like 30x, and the “top-tier” were “on another planet.”

      • 1
        1

I saw an ESPN series where they talked about a college RB from the 80s named Marcus Dupree, how many scholarship offers he had, and boosters offering to buy his (relatively poor) family cars and houses (a single wide i think). It was the sordid side of college football to be sure. He was a man among boys out there, fast, smooth, and big. But after a concussion, he wasn’t the same.

College football has been crooked a long time, often the “blue blood” programs.

As college football swirls down the drain, it will only be appropriate for Michigan to win it all this year…

I might actually root for the huskies again (also did in PAC championship).

        • Fun Fact:
Oklahoma stunk for the first three games of Dupree’s frosh year, getting skunked by USC in the third. Dupree hadn’t really been used, because the wishbone is defensible in at least making the option not be “that” guy, and making everyone else beat you. So Switzer threw out the playbook and switched it up from the wishbone to running the I-formation, and he just handed the ball off to Dupree. And the team responded.

          • Yeah, they showed that too, that was impressive. Dupree’s potential was so great they scrapped their system and went I-formation.

Not very often that happens IN season!

  33. TPB has one player in the transfer portal, so far. They seem to be doing something right with NIL.

Also helps to play a shit ton of players throughout the season. Their next issue is winning.

  34. I wish they’d start playing the mid-/lower-tier bowl games earlier. Start games two weeks after last regular season game, so everyone has a bye week, then game on. Play them all in a 5 to 7-day window and open the portal after. I know kids can still opt out, but I’m guessing more would play. There is going to be a lot of unwatchable football this year, probably more so than ever.

    • 5
      1

      It’s college football.

It’s all unwatchable, unless I have some emotional tie to it, where I can suspend my belief and take it for the relative product it is.

One person’s “amazing play” is most likely multiple coverage breakdowns or simply a kid falling down.

      • I don’t disagree, but point stands. Even if you only watch the team you’re emotionally connected to, it’s could create a better product for those 60 minutes of play.

    • By allowing 6-6 teams to play in bowls it has created the ESPN garbage can bowl series. Just changing that rule would eliminate about 12 of the 42 bowls.

Those games are unwatchable. I would much prefer to watch I-AA, D2, D3 playoffs instead if they had them on

      • I agree. I would trim the amount of bowls to 25. that’s 50 teams. there are 133 current FBS teams. currently 84 make bowls. That would eliminate all the 6-6 and worse teams. At least then teams would need winning record to make it.

        • Still far too many to make them meaningful.

If you want them to have meaning you can have maybe 8 beyond the 12 team playoff and none should be part of the playoff. 28 postseason teams total. Conference champs all get a spot plus 19 (18 if the PAC rebuilds) at lerge bids to the postseason.

That allows you to give every conference champ and most if not all ranked teams a reward and would create matchups worth watching.

      • Think about it.

Would ESPN have these bowls, if it didn’t make them money?

Poor attendance and low viewer numbers (relative to “high profile” games) still makes them money.

This is why the Pac 12 Network had to be killed. We figured out how easy it was to make our own money.

  35. A system like professional soccer leagues have could be implemented in which there is a fee paid to the club (transfer fee) or in this case the university as well as the player (salary/NIL). Universities that want to pay for proven talent would have the ability to do so but it would provide a deterrent. It would also benefit universities that are better at developing talent. Borussia dortmund is a club in the German league that is known for this business model (talent developer). They still manage to compete for league titles against teams with much larger budgets.

  36. Sounds like a game with the ducks is being set for Sept 14 in corvallis. Canzano is reporting. At least we get them early in the season with a new QB.

    • 7
      7

Fuck that, this is the straw that breaks the camels back for me. What a bitch move if true. Guess I’ll have lots of free Saturdays for golf next fall at least!.

    • I am not surprised. No way the Civil War could continue as the final game of the regular season when the two teams were in different conferences. Non-league games go first on most schedules, not last.

      • 2
        1

Many teams play rivals the last week still.

        Clemson/South Carolina
        Georgia/Georgia Tech

Even USC protected playing Notre Dame the final week while moving to the same conference Oregon is moving too.

Rivalry games between teams in different conferences can be played the last week, Oregon just didn’t value the game enough to make it happen.

          • 5
            2

127 games, only one outside November and that was 1895. That game was played the last week of October.

You’re right it could get moved back to November or Oregon could have valued it enough to tell the B1G they wanted an open date in November. They didn’t. Sorry, I have no interest in playing on Oregon’s terms. That’s what G5 schools do.

I guess I’d just prefer OSU have some pride. But whatever, September is usually great golf weather in Bend.

          • 9 civil war games have been played outside of November –

            October (3 – 1895, 1937 and 1945)
            December (6 – 1898, 1945, 2001, 2007, 2009 and 2010)

          • Knew about the December ones (counted those as November), stand corrected on the 2 October ones I missed. I’m still 1000% against playing them in September.

It’s a G5 move. But ultimately not my call. It is my call to not watch though.

          • Thanksgiving weekend isn’t the point, it’s about not begging for scraps. Agreeing to this is embarrassing. That said 2020 was Thanksgiving weekend.

Last I’ll say on it. The decision is made. Who wants to talk baseball?

        • It’s not a rivalry game anymore, their game with UW is.

The idea of holding on to a rivalry game that isn’t seems kind of desperate. Only OSU will refer to it as such.

          • I’m not going to refer to it as such.

We get to re-start our non-con W-L record with them.

We were 1-7-2 against them before the PCC was formed. And we were 3-1-1 against them after the PCC and before the AAWU/Pac 8.

So our record against this particular non-con foe is 4-8-3.

  37. Marshall’s QB entered the portal and their coach’s comment was “there isn’t a lot of money for NIL here and the fans hate him. It’s not surprising.”

  38. 5
    3

Do the morons in the athletic department want to tank the football program?

Serious question. A blowout loss at home knocks us out of CFP contention next year. Poof, there goes our revenue.

    • 2
      2

      There goes some revenue.

You need to balance that with needing content for home games to present to any potential media partner, as well as filling the stadium.

      • 2
        6

I know several people (including me) that won’t watch the program anymore if they schedule Oregon in September. It’s a dealbreaker for me. November I could have lived with. September is what little brothers that belong in the MWC agree to.

If you think we’re going to be good enough for that you’re dreaming. 2024 Beavs are not going to look anything like the 2023 Beavs.

  39. Oregon State: Trent Bray has made his hire as Director of Football Operations, bringing in veteran Mike McHugh. McHugh (one of the original DFO’s in college football back in 1994) has led programs at Missouri (twice), Oregon, Cal, Fresno State (twice), and Washington. McHugh also coached at Eastern Michigan and with the Detroit Lions.

    • “Coaching Career Highlights

Nominee for the Broyles Award in 2013 for the nation’s top assistant coach—the only non-coordinator to receive such recognition
Top-five finalist in 2014 for the Football Scoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year honor
Coached four Pac-12 postseason honorees at Utah, including first teamers Nate Orchard in 2014 and Trevor Reilly in 2013
Orchard was also named the Morris Trophy recipient as the Pac-12’s top lineman and the nation’s top defensive end by winning the Ted Hendricks Award before being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft
Under Tuiaki, Utah led the nation in overall sacks in 2014 with 55 and was sixth for average tackles for loss per game at 7.9 after ranking second in sacks per game in 2013 at 3.25”

  40. Looking at the portal and decommits each day is like opening a barn door when you know a horse is going kick you in the balls.
    But, you do it anyway…

  41. 16
    3

People think the Beavs had a shot at the playoffs next year, but they’ll also get stomped by the Ducks? Can anyone walk me through the logic there.

      • You’re correct, because the two non-P4 conference champions who get auto-bids will likely be outside the top 12.

So we’ll probably need to be inside the top 10. And knowing that politics and ratings matter more than what happens on the field, we’ll probably have to not be 9 or 10, in order to be bullet-proof.

    • 16
      4

They got stomped by the yucks because their coach was checked out on them all season and all but confirmed that he was gone to them personally the day before the game. Roster was fully capable of winning that game (and every game) on the schedule this season.

They were 8 points worth of coaching fails away from being 11-0 heading into the Civil War. Ranked all season and as high as #10 in CFP.

Phenom QB and starting RB/TE coming back, Bolden for another season, but with likely upgrades coming in around him. Good OL/DL developing to replace the Seniors. FR defensive backs holding their own in a trial by fire first season. Arnold bros coming back. Another good recruiting class on the way.

Primed to finish in the top 12 next season while playing an Independent schedule and very likely capable of being an undefeated or 1 loss team.

Throw it all away because the coach needed to go to a place where he felt like he could “chase championship at the highest level”, not just abandon a place that he didn’t feel like he could that, so he did both, both the going to a new place and abandoning of the old place.

      • I agree with most of your points.

I bet we’d still lose players if Smith stuck around. Griffin and Speights left last year.

Aidan would have been here so qb wouldn’t have been a big issue. But DJ was always going to move on because his backup was going to pass him up and he showed he’s not nfl ready.

    • 31
      3

Losing Chiles, Velling, the Arnolds, DJ plus so many impact seniors already makes any thought of playoffs a pipe dream anyway. We’ll need to rebuild the OLine, learn a new offense and find players who fit that offense first.
Jonathan Smith is raw dogging his old program left and right.
I know some people give him a pass because he built the program up for a couple years, but he’s actively tearing it down to lower levels than it was when he arrived.
That hobbit looking mf’er can go to hell

      • Yep, well put. Every single one of our portal guys are starters…and key contributors to top it off. 20+ seniors gone. 1/2 our already small class is cut in half with decommitments. I suppose we’ll be able to score a few bodies here and there but it’s looking more likely that we’ll be looking at a 3 or 4 win season which is super sad considering the amount of MW schools on our schedule next year. And some people still want to play the Civil War? There’s no fun in that moving forward. We’re going to be playing a bunch of our scout team players next year and Yucks will spend $10 mill bringing in proven talent. These games won’t be remotely fun. Is that really a rivalry when you just get your ass kicked year in and year out? Colorado State losses to Colorado even in Colorado’s worst years. Aside from the whole being a bunch of goddamn traitors and helping to blow the conference up, we just want to willingly lineup to get our asses kicked? Shit is so depressing.

  42. I’m wondering how much our guys are getting offered to leave, obviously only have around 3 mil in NIL funds, but was curious how we are using it. I am well aware ours is a measly sum in comparison to other programs.

  43. 2
    3

Holy shit, we’re gonna get our fudge packed in so bad by the Ducks next season.

Literally gonna be our 2023 2nd unit vs an improved duck team.

  44. Tuiaki would be a great hire as a DL coach. Has plenty experience, a good track record, good recruiter, and Polynesian which is huge in getting those players. Polynesians are big into their culture so they always click better with those coaches and with teams that have a good amount of other poly players. The best hire so far if it comes to fruition IMO.

  45. 16

I think the high point for JS was probably winning last
    2022 Civil War.
Consider the events since that game:
Chiles signs but DJ transferred in and forced JS to adjust his plan with Chiles out of PR concerns.

Spring ball/scrimmage was a muddy and concerning display as far as DJ being superior to either BG or Chiles.
Fast forward to Aug 4 and the conference implosion and JS must’ve decided immediately he wasn’t sticking around for the downfall, and probably told his agent to start looking for opportunities.
I’d say JS handled Chiles as if he had already decided he was leaving and needed to get the kid some reps to prepared for the school, rather than why we assumed were reps to keep him engaged so he wouldn’t hit the transfer portal.
Mich St fired Tucker the week before WSU game and I think JS was already in contact with them.
The team looked the unprepared for 3 key road games and each had a circumstance that could easily be tied to MSU opening.
WSU- Tucker fired, JS interested and his agent reaches out that week
Arizona- After a bye week and likely an in person interview for Smith at MSU or somewhere neutral
Oregon- Smith prepared to leave immediately after Civil War so he tells the team pre game or the day before

I think JS is delusional and not that great of a coach, so he tries to take his entire staff and now he is crippling OSU as he raids the roster with MSU NIL money. It makes him as low as anything the Ducks I’ve done over the last 25 years.

He is a traitor to OSU and it is worse than Riley or any of the truly failed coaches of the losing streak era. JS had enough resources and enough backing to ride it out but he went out like a coward and is doubling down on cowardly behavior.

I’m trying not to be angry at the players as they leave to the portal but they likely stay if JS has the courage to stay.
Bray has the best demeanor we’ve seen in a football coach in a long time and I think he will do great things but he is fighting an uphill battle against a lot of his former colleagues to keep the roster intact. I wonder if friendships are destroyed in coaching circles after these types of circumstances. I think I would be ending some friendships if I were in Brays place.

    • I’m not sure we can trace any actual performances during the season to the MSU situation, just because I don’t think JS had to do that much actual work in applying. I think you’re right though that he made his decision as soon as the P12 imploded, and had zero qualms about raiding the program of all the coaches and players he could take with him. The dude had me sooooo fooled. I would have bet anything he was a humble and loyal guy. Instead he’s actually MORE of a sociopath than most football coaches. We had our own American Psycho right here in Corvallis.

      • 22

McCoy is landing plenty of offers, including one from Mich State and Oregon
Love how these teams trash OSU as being a shitty program but are more than happy to raid OSU roster to rebuild theirs. Fuck everybody

  46. 7
    1

I have a well-connected realtor friend here in Corvallis who heard that the Smith’s were prepping their home for sale back in October. It is not yet listed for sale as of yet though.

It’s horrible. OSU’s mantra of “built not bought” will need to be put on the shelf for a bit. There are reportedly 1300 players in the transfer portal. They can’t all be terrible or expect million dollar NILs.

    • Have to hand it to JS. He must have fooled everyone during the Hall of Fame weekend. Riley telling story about the player he came to look at in Glendora but asking about the “little quarterback who wanted to be a coach.” Everyone telling JS what a great job he’s done. Meanwhile, Candice is hauling stuff to Goodwill. The other coaches knew they were leaving. I think they are just as crappy. If Michxxxx, OL coach’s wife doesn’t want to move to EL; should be lovely.

  47. 1
    6

Seems like once the postseason awards came out, the value of a few players went up enough to get a lot of attention.

So look for Tanner Miller, Lolohea, and Bolden to be the next ones out. My advice to them? Get paid! And get the most money you can

    • I’m actually more in favor of the guys hitting the portal if they avoid Mich St and would have less respect for them if they followed JS after his act.
Let them go get paid since it is unlikely very many will get a shot at the NFL but make sure you have a spot to land and preferably not East Lansing.

    • Not sure why Lolo would go anywhere… except for money. I keep forgetting about the money.

Our D-line has not been impressive, other than learning how to contain mobile QBs a little better than in the past. The players themselves provide the talent, but they don’t seem to get home all that much, unless someone has a game and just goes off. Even then, it just looks like any other day for any other D-line in the country.

We should have been better than what we’ve seen the last couple years.

      • No one seemed to have pass rush moves that consistently beat blockers. Chatfield was good coming in late, when the OT/OG were already occupied, but that was about it.

I’m excited to see what MMD can do next year…assuming he doesn’t transfer.

  48. 10
    1

The gutting of the team became the expected bloodbath after the first few days of quietness. The path forward is going to be pretty tough. Bowl game now is a tryout for remaining players.

One thing that I know is hurting the team badly is the schedule announcement. If I’m a transfer player and there’s no schedule, you can tell me all you want that a schedule is coming but until I see it, the interest level is low. It’ll help even more if they can announce the opponents for 2025 to know the program is stable.

I expect Bray to fill most of the spots with transfer players. The talent is out there, extra year from COVID helps. It doesn’t need to be former 5 stars. I’d like to see him go after experienced players falling off power programs as they won’t need much acclimatization. He’ll want them in before winter term so they can get to know each other.

So first thing that needs to happen to move forward is the schedule. Scheduling Oregon is a mistake unless they offered a sum that OSU could not turn down.

    • 2
      1

My guess is OSU negotiated to pay to play them rather than the other way around. Just because that is now par for the course.
Expect a subpar settlement with the departing 10 soon enough too.
Barnes is flailing with no schedule in sight. GK 2.0 so far. We almost have it ready….2 months pass… almost

      • 1
        2

I dont understand why they cant release the partial schedule at least? Now it feels like oregon is just fucking with us to delay the schedule release and hurt our program even more

        • Are you all just not understanding the court’s decision?

We won, and now we’re just waiting to see if the Washington Supreme Court agrees that the 10’s concern trolling about us being punitive in this year’s distributions, despite the judge’s decision saying we really can’t do that, is enough of a technicality for them to vacate that decision.

WE DON”T NEED TO FUCKING SETTLE, BECAUSE WE WON THE CASE.

And the appeal will likely just die in a little whimper. I’m surprised there aren’t lawyers being sanctioned for wasting the court’s time, given some of their arguments.

          • What I don’t understand is why the WSC granted a stay. I think it’s clear that all OSU and WSU are asking for is control of the board and network assets so that they can negotiate with other networks. They understand that if they simply confiscated revenue that they’d get sued into an oblivion.

No stay should have been granted.

          • I think it’s more of a, “This is it? This is your appeal? We’re going to give you a couple weeks to come up with something substantial,” sort of deal.

Either that, or they’re just too busy to even look at it for now.

            Or maybe it’s both.

          • What people are also missing in the WSC’s stay is that they moved the timeline up for al filings–next Tuesday. I think that’s a response to OSU/Wazzu asking for a timely resolution.

So if the appeal is simply a stall, that didn’t work.

The continued stay is just them saying they need to actually look at it, and everything stays the same until they do. The accelerated timeline means they probably don’t expect much more of an argument from anyone, so they better come up with one soon, if they can find it.

      • Thank you. I was lucky to catch it early at a doctor’s appt that was previously scheduled for another issue, so i got started on anti viral meds ASAP which should slow it down a bit. But damn, this isnt fun.
I’m under 50 and the vaccine hadnt been offered to me yet. At least I don’t think I was eligible for it. It wasnt even on my radar.
It’s like having poison oak over a sunburn, while also getting stabbed by a crochet needle randomly.

        • 3
          6

The vaccine has only recently been made affordable for us people over 50. Before that, it was something like $300 per shot.

I’m thinking it’s the Diane Feinstein Effect. Right wingers like her don’t think anyone needs help out here in the real world, until it happens to them. Dick Cheney and homosexuality is the same thing. Straight from being a hateful little prick to becoming almost human on the topic.

          • Ok, well glad to know it wasnt just something i ignored but had available. I’m 46, so it definitely can hit before the age of 50.

          • I’ve wanted to get it for a couple years, but I wasn’t going to drop that kind of money on it.

People I know who have had it say it would be worth it. And maybe it would be. I’ve put up with a full upper body poison oak incident and losing a lot of skin on a single mountain biking accident. So while I know I can hadle it, if it hits, I honestly just don’t want to go through that kind of stuff anymore, if I can avoid it.

        • It’s good that you decided to be proactive in this case.

Unlike poison oak, you can get shingles flare ups in places other than on your skin… like inside your intestines for example. If not controlled, that can lead to permanent (scarring) damage.

It also can be extremely difficult to manage, even with antivirals; it’s why vaccination is recommended.

        • Had it around 2009 in my thirties, not fun. The intermittent stabbing pains were wholly debilitating. Occasionally still get a nerve twinge and recall that bout.

          • You know… I thought I was being irrational in being fearful of this virus and running out to get the vaccine, once insurance covered it.

Now I’m thinking I wasn’t being rational enough.

          • Yeah, the stabbing part is difficult to describe because I’ve never had anything similar to compare it to, other than the sensation of being prodded over and over.
It generally sticks to specific zones in your body where the affected nerve is located and doesnt spread beyond that zone like poison oak would, so i guess that’s good to know

          • May your recovery be swift and any lingering effects minimal.

Guess the pain was similar in intensity to bashing a shin or hitting a digit with a hammer, a notch down from a bone fracture but shorter duration in any case. Mine was localized to a small area, and that’s where there is rarely just a tiny flash of the pain, like 5%. When I’m fifty I’m getting that vaccine.

    • Yep, about 18 years ago while going through a very stressful time in my life. Was off work for a week, swollen glands in neck, fever for 3 days, it was a bitch. Got a shingles shot a couple years back because don’t want to go through that again. Hang in there buddy.

    • Had it, sucked BIG TIME!!! Try to get some cannabinoids, smokeless, get some salve, or drops. Albany has a place called the ACKR, it was the only thing that helped with the pain because your dealing with nerves and the cannabinoids go straight to the nerve receptors.

  49. 17

Looks like we got a commitment projection from Rush Reimer. All-American and 1st team Big Sky OT from Montana State. Also has offers from Boise State, Kansas State and Purdue.

  50. Think we’re at 6 decommitments so far..maybe I’ve missed some. Had 13 commitments I believe? Gonna have to dip into the intramural teams for some bodies.

  51. So the ncaa presidents proposal about making an upper tier in football in order to pay players directly is getting some endorsements by several commissioners. They think about 100 schools would opt into the pay for play deal. But the kicker is they don’t want to add those players as employees. This shit is getting wild.

    • Gosh it almost sounds like a few years ago when players were wanting to get paid by the schools for the revenue they are helping to produce. NIL made this go away for a bit.

    • Who cares what the NCAA thinks? They’ve provided no leadership in terms of player compensation, competitive equity, referee performance and quality standards , conference integrity and alignment…they’ve been impotent.

Why do they now pretend to have relevance?

      • They’re being asked to open the flood gates and drown what’s left of college sports. You think the ncaa presidents came up with this on his own? It’s coming from conferences. With those anti trust lawsuits being filed at places like UO they know what’s going to happen.
The article talked to several conference leaders who want all the NIL money turned over to the schools, protection from congress against antitrust lawsuits, the ability to not call players employees. I didn’t see anything about a salary cap, but you know that’s on the list.

  52. Also, OSU Beavers app is updating players pretty quickly. All xfer portal guys have been removed from roster. Seeing our qb room down to BG, Throckmorton and Montiel is rough.

    • Fees more like sour grapes than a clear rule… not sure how it works though. Seems similar to an October surprise right before the final four… rather than a clear storyline after the quarterfinal game.

    • How the hell does that even happen? Is there so little oversight in soccer that basic rules don’t even get followed? Imagine a player getting ejected for targeting in CFB and nobody bothering to make sure he sits out the first half of the next game as required.
Luck o the Beavs indeed. Jesus that’s just embarrassing.

    • 2
      1

Sorry to ruin the hopes of the doom-and-gloomers but we actually have a decent chance to win this game. The key is to not turn the ball over and limit their special teams.

      • If it’s just limited to this list then we do have a puncher’s chance as they say. If we bleed out a few more starters before then, it’ll be tough

  53. 15

Let’s stop and appreciate BG for sticking around (not that he would necessarily be used at any other P5 school). He’ll be serviceable I’d imagine for the bowl game considering we have no other real QBs.

  54. Brandon Huffman has a paywall article about Sam Leavitt and the teams he’s receiving interest from.
I can see the Beavs are mentioned at the beginning but can’t read beyond that. Probably all we need to know though

    • A quick search us him visiting Nebraska and maybe Utah.
I saw that Utah has Rising coming back and both Barnes and Nate Johnson are in the portal already.

Lots of qbs moving around among programs.

If Ohio St and Oklahoma can’t keep their own qbs, who can?

      • 7
        1

With our history of winning with walk-ons, why do we keep trying to get fancy?

I missed that our double digit wins come when we have a walk-on step up.

        BG is our gift horse.

And now that QBs are cost prohibitive, why not just go that route?

We don’t need to be creating NFL qbs, in order to win on this level.

          • But we will need some borderline NFL wrs or better.

I was only half-kidding when I suggested Mike Riley be allowed to identify wr recruits, again, who don’t have to be NFL talent to be highly successful on this level.

          • Great, we just need to recruit like them at every position.

Just because some walk-ons are good doesn’t mean that should be your strategy.

          • It’s not about the walk-ons, per se.

It’s about trying to fill out your roster with NFL talent, based on size and fit, but blowing your wad on the wrong positions.

Is one QB worth five OL to you? Four? Three?

How important are the QB’s measurables in college football, versus their intelligence?

  55. Taylen Green visiting Arkansas, LSU, Cal, BYU and Oregon State before the deadline. I’d say we have a shot vs Cal and BYU but don’t see us being able to offer a larger bag than Arkansas or LSU. We need LBCC to start a program…might be the best route for us to get anybody.

  56. Leon Lowery Jr, the Syracuse transfer who had a visit to OSU scheduled, won’t be coming on that visit. Committed to Wisconsin today

  57. So with this Soccer suspension. We lose the player for 2 games and the head coach for 4 games.
Is this player irreplaceable on the Beavs roster? Have no idea who he is.
Pretty messed up that nobody was aware the guy was ineligible to play last week on either the school’s part or the NCAA’s part.

    • 13

So the coach told the team the day before that he was bailing.

Many players then checked out and started thinking about where they were going to transfer to
      After hitting the portal.

      Total dick move

    • I posted at 4:05 day of CW, in game thread:

“Rumor is Smith is leaving tomorrow for MSU…

      Team allegedly pissed.

      Expect a blowout if true.

      *Sunday, not tomorrow.”

UO was playing Michigan State’s game on Autzen screen during team warm ups before the game – good “distract and demoralize” strategy, even if a bit dirty.

People knew, the players knew. It showed on the O side if the ball, which was also down some starting OLine…

      • He told the team, a day before the game, and everyone kept quiet about it?
Not a single player or staffer tweeted, tiktoked or whatever it is kids do these days?
I find it hard to believe he dropped that bomb on 100-ish people, and everyone covered for him.

    • That’s so “Zyn” of him….Embarrassing for the program.

How, HOW, and why, does an OSU coach and football alum, exit so distastefully the day before the last ever CW in the last year of the PAC?

The whole narrative about alumni love for an institution, the “tradition” of college football, putting student athletes “first” is all bullshit. As I said in a prior thread; the Beaver football team got fucked over twice; first by the PAC dissolution, then by Smith right before the CW.

They should NEVER trot him back and put him in the OSU Athletics hall of fame for his coaching.

  58. If the DC is going to be KHJ and he has to finish the raiders season is this risky? While waiting on him could he potentially get a better offer and fall through? How much will it hurt recruiting with him not being apart of it yet?

Also if Tuiaki is the DL coach why haven’t they announced it?

  59. I’ve tried to read the transfer portal rules but . . . what happens to a player in the transfer portal who has not found a place when the window has closed?

    • The goal right now is to keep the talent level above the G5 schools. If he meets that criteria, take him.

Also he’s 6-10…might be too tall

        • Thank you for sharing the PFF scores, helpful information.

And your opinion, how much would a good coach increase their scores? For example, would this kid be able to hit 75 in a year with good coaching? Buffs had a terrible O line.

          • A big leap for a multi-year starter is something like +10-15. OSU’s OL’s under Jim M have usually been in the 70-75 range or higher (for studs like Fuaga) and our units always rank top 10 in the country. PFF’s “replacement level”/average players are usually in the 60-65 range.

We’ve been really spoiled with OL play over the last 7-8 years. Even in the GA years, Woods’s units were in the top half of the conference. As an example, our average grade across the 2017 OL (the team that won one game) was 67.

          • Also, Lichtenhan was ranked 18/27 in the conference for OT’s with enough snaps to qualify for the ranking. So bottom half, but could have been worse.

  60. 10
    3

This whole thing about Smith’s messy exit is hilarious, because I’m also a member of a website/message board for football coaches – a place to ask questions etc. about strategy, rules, team situations, seek advice from other who have done it. Well, anyway back in September someone with the screen name “Tartan” asked a question about how a coach goes about leaving a job. Now I’d had a few when I saw the post and I provided a list. Well first, don’t even tell the wife until the deal is done with your agent. Then, let your most trusted assistants know, but ignore the ones you don’t want to come with you unless you can’t find anyone better. Contact a local realtor to get a market outlook on the window when you are hoping to move – and you can trust realtors, they don’t gossip at all. When the AD offers you an extension, let him know that you don’t want any distractions in the middle of the season, you’ll sign it after the seaoson’s over, keep recruiting, if anything – focus on the players you think might join you at the new school, who like “you” more than the school. If word begins to leak out and you are asked about it – say you are “focused on the game ahead” repeatedly. Then, level with your players ahead of the last game – ESPECIALLY if it is a rivalry game – they’re grown-ass men. They will want to win your going away party. And don’t forget to get the wife to dump your old schools clothes at the local Goodwill, make some half-ass comment/thanks to the old school for the opportunities etc. And be sure to leave one coach “hanging back” at the old place to snag any potential transfers.

        • It’s much less than 50% at present; it’s only been 4 days so far. We’re waiting much like the team probably is on incoming hires etc.

        • 8 in the portal. 6 this cycle. Smith did tell team he was leaving the night before CW confirmed. Legi left under suspicious circumstances (thrown out or quit were not sure). Questionable OC/ oline hires. Still not schedule. Game with UO is back on for early season (not the civil war, game).
          Did I miss anything?

          • That’s just the athletic dept dumping what was left in his dressing room. It’s being made a bigger deal than it is. It might as well go to a good cause and making available limited edition team gear available to everyone, even if it has that scumbags name sewn into it.

          • The Ath. Dept. dumpes their stuff at OSUsed – a great place to find stuff left in dorms, unneed classroom and office furntiture and old Beaver sports football jersys and practice gear. Picked up some items that used to belong to Eric Moreland from his time with OSU basketball there.

I almost wonder if the “play” is to dump all of your logoed gear at a local resale place, ensure it gets noticed as a way of declarying your undying allegience to the new school. Like burning the boats on an expedition after you arrive.

And yes – my post above was made in jest regarding Smith’s very awkward departure.

Pac2 is going to be rebuilt with big12 and acc partners.

Keeping 3 auto bids and three votes is the strategy to not get locked out by big10/sec. This time next year, the pac12 will look very firmilar without the big10 deflectors and a couple byu Baylor adds

          • Yeah, supposedly Oregon and Texas Tech have a deal to drop their matchup. TTech will play WSU instead. And then Boise is moving their OSU game day to make room for Oregon at OSU on Sept 14.
It’s still the Civil War no matter what they say.
I don’t like it. Basically signing up for body bag games going forward, and we’ll have to hear it from duck fan till the end of time.

          • That’s awful. We’re going to have MWC type recruits, basically glorified high schoolers, playing the Ducks? Why are we doing this exactly?? Great deal for the Ducks. They get to continue to dominate the series and rub salt in the wounds. NCAAF = yucky all around.

          • Argument, as I hear it:
            1-helps our SOS
2-we’ll be competitive because we’ll be funding at a P5 level
3-gives us a sure sell out at home (for the first of the 2 year agreement).
A little “LOL” to all that, still dreaming of Barnes producing a schedule that is attractive to current squad and portal targets.

          • Here’s my argument against the SOS claims.

            Liberty football vs SMU football.

SOS for Liberty was #127 out of 133.
Liberty goes 13-0 in the regular season, playing a bunch of directional schools and other nobodies.
Finish the regular season ranked #23 in the CFP Playoff rankings.
They’re going to a NY6 game this year and would be in the playoffs if it were a 12 team playoff this season.

SOS for SMU was 70 out of 133.
SMU goes 11-2, playing a much strong schedule that featured TCU, ranked Oklahoma, ranked Tulane.
Finish the regular season ranked #24 in the CFP Playoff rankings.

The argument the committee made for Liberty over SMU in the rankings was wins.

            https://www.espn.com/college-football/team/schedule/_/id/2335/liberty-flames

            https://www.espn.com/college-football/team/schedule/_/id/2567/smu-mustangs

SOS might help us make money in ticket sales, but the margin of error to get into the playoffs is razor thin, and we can’t afford to give losses away.

          • Oh, and SMU’s consolation bowl game? The Wasabi Fenway Bowl, in Boston.
I guess Fenway park would be a fun place to visit, but probably not in December.

          • Yep, playing a tough schedule is foolish. How some fans still think strength of schedule matters will never make sense to me.

They’ll leave a 1-2 loss OSU out regardless of their schedule. Going 12-0 is their only real path.

          • The Civil War mantra was based on the schools being partners. Thats dead now, how can you fight a Civil War with a Midwest school?

The moniker is dead, at least killing the name makes sense now.

          • The CW is a game at the end of the year where it’s possible both teams could be playing for something, or an upset could cause chaos. The week leading up to it is festive, and the students are engaged.

This is just a game against the Ducks before school starts. They owe us at least two years of filler material, then they can screw off.

          • I refuse to call it that along with several other members. It wouldn’t bother me if we never played the game again to be honest. They could have told the big10 their last game should be OSU OOC but they didn’t.

    • You missed the news that Bray seems to have (finally) gone outside the family with his hire of Mike McHugh as DFO. Experienced at several schools since 1994.
Don’t know much other than he doesn’t seem to have connections to Riley, et al.

  61. Javier Armas, soccer player, named an All-American the day after NCAA screws him with a BS suspension.

Come on Beavs, take it all the way!

  62. The more I look at QB options going forward, I think I’m most in favor of Jaylen Green out of Boise as a realistic option.
I was told his visit is likely this next week. He’s in Arkansas this weekend.
He already has the connection with Martinez. He’s built similar to more physically mature Aidan Chiles. Probably doesn’t have quite the same quickness, but does have good top speed and running ability. And he was making some pretty impressive throws at the MW championship game last week. One of the best throws didn’t make the highlights, but was a perfectly placed bomb down the field and the WR just let it slip through his hands, despite being uncovered.

With MSU playing the *ucks on Oct 5 next season, Beavs fans should buy as many tickets as they can, wear all orange, and BOO both teams loudly the entire game, and trash the place.

  64. MhVER3 tweets today:

1st Tweet – B12/ACC exploring scheduling partnership, branding opportunities, and jointly sponsoring a consulting firm to give them a detailed report on valuations/options for a merger.

2nd Tweet – I’m told one option that was mentioned for a ACC/B12 merger was a consolidation that would allow ACC and B12 to each exist as a subsidiaries to a new conglomerate. Pac2 may be approached soon as BY and JP want more info on the PAC assets and legal case.

3rd Tweet – BY & JP meeting with Pac2 is a precarious thing due to the fact they have current members of the conference set to join their conferences. It complicates things and may need to go though a 3rd party (consulting firm)

    • People are starting to notice:
      1. we have money… and a network
      2. they’re not power conferences, either

Was this not predictable, if true?

A settlement of this kind means our leverage is a trade for security and getting the part of the gang that just panicked back together.

And someone like Yormark has a TV network and a lot of content to work with.

With these kind of numbers, and a TV network, this conglomerate can then approach other NCAA conferences about their current TV deals and maybe talk to them about putting a lot of their content on the same platform as ours… one maybe with a standalone app… finally.

Can you imagine a future where a publicly owned (essentially) network bids on March Madness? The schools would make their money coming and going.

One out of a thousand tweets does not make him a swami of backroom college football bureaucratic deals. For most of August and Sept he was virtually wrong at every tweet. I like to believe even a little bit of that is true but I don’t. His track record is dogshit.

      • In fairness, it is always comments about what is being discussed, he almost never says things are going to happen. An entity discussing options, ideas, etc and those being shared would not even remotely suggest very many of them will actually happen.

        • Agree. A lot of people seem to hate on him for “getting it wrong” when any time he has shared something as an absolute it’s pretty much been spot on. The few times he’s been concrete on what was actually happening, it has actually happened (USC/UCLA to B1G, Buffs to B12, CALFORD to ACC).

He does post a lot of speculation around what is potentially being discussed and what *could* happen, but he shares it as such and doesn’t come across as a click-bait engagement farmer like a lot of other accounts.

      Bunch of dummies.

Of course athletes should be treated as employees and be allowed to organize.

Only through a CBA will all the legal actions stop. Granting anti-trust exemption only gives the trust more of what it wants for itself. And bringing NIL in-house sounds like a really terrible idea.

Things like salary caps, multi-year contracts, even a draft are possible with that kind of relationship.

And the NCAA can enforce things like academic progress, because it would be a part of the CBA.

The rich schools won’t share their pie with anyone. So why are the rest trying to play second-fiddle against each other, instead of just kicking them to the curb, then implementing sensible employment practices for these kids. They deserve to sit through safety meetings, like the rest of us.

      • Money is all it is. I bet if someone said sure you can have whatever plan you want but no more taxpayer money the howling would be heard from Mars.
DII seems much more wholesome right now, and they have a better playoff.

  65. might want to go back and re-read what he has posted and get back to us. These things are always very fluid and change constantly but he has gotten quite a few items right. The guy is obviously connected with someone in the BIG12

    • He reports a lot on “x and y discussed z,” which happens all the time. It doesn’t mean they decided to do that, just that it was discussed (like Big 10 and SEC being NFL feeder teams).

      • They’re gonna be lined up correctly and with the most optimal pre-snap read/check almost every time. It’s a big BG upside.

It sucks he hasn’t gotten to play but I can’t imagine he’s somehow regressed significantly as a passer. We’ll see.

          • If Beavs are without a legit TE, why wouldn’t ND just bring heavy pressure constantly against BG, especially without 2 Oline starters for OSU?

I know BG has a good handle on the offense and Hynson likely keeps everything pretty close to what we’ve seen for the last 3 years but no Martinez and no Veiling/GOuld isn’t a great start. Come to think of it, the Beavs are down 2 Oline, DJU, Gould, Veiling, Martinez on offense… Bolden and Fenwick may need to go beast mode again for the win.

          • Riley Sharp is a legitimate TE. He hasn’t gotten to play much, but when he does he makes plays.
I also think Milbourne has talent

          • I thought it was a little odd that Sharp switched to TE, it seemed that he got less playing time on offense than he did on defense. I thought he was a decent linebacker. It will be cool to see him get a lot of snaps in the bowl game to see what he can do.

        • I don’t think BG has regressed but he hasn’t play a meaningful snap since last year. The first quarter could be rough. I’m sure they’ll have the first 3 or so plays scripted.

Pretty funny read actually. When you consider who went with JS, Coach M is the only real painful loss.
They can have Lindgren, and in the article,
Wozniak is hyped for how he transformed Musgrave form a 3 star to an NFL talent…the Musgrave that never lived up to the hype in Corvallis.
Blue Adams is a slightly difficult loss yet he had his best season as a coach with. a bunch of sixth year. guys, so kind of skewed I guess.
I’m hoping the better coaches are thew ones that didn’t want to go with JS and Bray can put together a better staff.

Gundy might be better than Lindgren just because he isn’t predictably going to fall in love with a deep out for no reason at all.

      • I get why you say that about Coach M. Also share the feeling that Lindy’s time had run out. Keith B is a weasel. Never trusted or liked that hire.

I personally am concerned about the massive loss of recruiting relationships with that staff. Woz killed it for us. Blue helped build the Florida pipeline. Coach M really started pulling some higher level guys at OL like Rustin. They showed great skill in elevating the profile of who we brought in while establishing a phenomenal PWO/WO program that provided upperclassman depth all over the depth chart. Noga, Tanner Miller, kitan, Kane etc.

Frankly Legi sucked and that room took far too long to turn around. With Doctors name now included I wonder if he was apart of the group left behind. Maybe my timeline is off, but this article is the first time I saw his name.

I couldn’t think of who coach Kefense brought in or developed. Candidly, of all positions, his group has been the worst over the past years. With minimal improvement.

I am not sure that the new group of coaches has the same types of relationships to get the athletes we need to succeed. Tuiaki seems to have some pull. No idea on Devan or Gundy.
I guess I would feel better if they got KH, but we need him NOW.

  66. Holy moly, two starting players on Clemson’s men’s soccer team (defender & midfielder) transferred after time at Oregon State.
I don’t feel good about the matchup tonight vs ND after the recent yellow card shenanigans, but we’re clearly doing something right with the program.

  67. Someone pointed out to me that former OSU Grad Assistant LB coach AJ Cooper was tagged on one of our most recent offer tweets. He also has “Corvallis, OR” listed as his location in his profile.
Makes sense since he and Bray coached LBs together under Tibesar.
I’ll try to confirm if he’s the new LB coach

Can Reser be a soccer home in the future?

I’m afraid Corvallis needs to build hotels near by, start hosting soccer, maybe concerts(?), make it mulri use, or its going to be the biggest student health center waiting room ever when Beavs end up in MWC fooball.

There was an article a few years back that predicted with all the changes to the sport of football including the dangers associated and reduction of youth participation, that it would be surpassed by soccer at the collegiate level in ~25 years. Universities therefore would in essence need to prepare their sizeable football edifices to be ready to accommodate the impending needs of soccer.

          • 5
            5

I clearly took it with a grain of salt. Soccer is still the world’s sport. Media killed that perspective in our country many years ago because they couldn’t squeeze marketing timeouts into the game’s formatting. Americans aren’t just that much more refined in their sports viewing than the rest of the world.

The NIL money and transfer portal have pretty much ruined college sports. I’d hate to be a coach. Your constantly recruiting and not just incoming freshmen but existing players. The vast majority will never play pro ball so if they can capitalize on tens of thousands or even 100’s of thousands of dollars, you would be foolish to not consider the offer.

    • Yes and the sad reality is multitudes of those kids will overvalue themselves and not have a spot the next season because they were limited to a small circle of teams and listened to bad advice.
Any JuCo coach faces the same kind of turnover yearly but he has guys wanting to play just for a second chance to jump back to D1/P5. But when you factor in the tampering and dollars promised by a lot of programs it is very different.
Decisions based solely on money rarely go well and a lot of these athletes will soon experience that. It disrupts their longterm education but gets them a short term bank account, if they actually get the NIL money they were promised.
I figure blue blood schools have a network of agents and phone banks and cash machines all over the country trying to consolidate talent into just the 15-20 preferred teams.
Athletes needs to realize it is simply a numbers game and there simply aren’t enough chairs at the table for every P5 athlete to transfer to SEC or Big10…

Hopefully Bray has a guy in his staff able to identify talented guys with a chip on the shoulder wanting to prove people wrong, instead of prima Donna’s wanting to be given everything because of star ratings etc.
Loyalty and education over the short term
      Dollars…

      • Its really bad. At least in the pros the players will generally sign for a few years and there is cap in place to prevent the rich few from buying a title every year.

  69. Once a kid goes into the portal, can they change their mind? If they remain where they are, will they get their scholarship back?

  70. Basically players are “free agents” signing a 1 year deal with no salary cap. What a deal!

This is not going to end well. The blue bloods and a school with a rich alumus can throw around $25-50MM for NIL money an buy a championship. So only a few teams will compete consistently for a title.

    • I mostly agree but Kentucky tried to do this in basketball and it went ok, not great. Still need chemistry, coaching to get guys used to new schemes, and some luck with injuries to key positions.

    • Isn’t that already happening?

CFP appearances and titles in parenthesis

      Alabama 8 (3)
      Clemson 6 (2)
      Ohio State 5 (1)
      Oklahoma 4
      Georgia 3 (2)
      Michigan 3
      Notre Dame 2
      Washington 2

      Several teams have one appearance…….

LSU is the outlier here as in their 1 appearance in 2019 they won it. Florida St has only appeared once. In 2014. They should have been in it this year. For all the talk and $ spent Whoregon has only been in the CFP once. 9 years ago.

UW and Notre Lame seem to be outliers as well. UW Went several years between appearances. Irish were a Johnny come lately in 2018 and 2020. Lost both times and haven’t sniffed it since.

Take those top 6. They have the best shot every year.

      Alabama
      Georgia
      Clemson
      Michigan
      Ohio St
      Oklahoma

Oklahoma moving to the SEC will move them off that list. The tOSU/Michigan loser also gets left out.

      https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2023-12-03/teams-most-college-football-playoff-wins-and-appearances

      • It’s almost as if more appearances correlate with more overall wins.

If I was a Pac 10/12 fan over the years, I would have complained that our conference champion just never got a chance to play, because bullshit.

Perhaps if they all would have played, many other schools would have shitty w/l percentages in the BCS?CFP.

A little on the soccer team, maybe indicates how important the new Football Director of Operations can be; note that the suspensions which likely cost the team the semi-final game were the result of “accounting errors” which occurred under a brand new HC.

Last year: After a moderately successful season, following two very successful prior season (#1 seed in the tourney in 2021, OSU player winning the Mac Hermann award in 2020, the soccer equivalent of the Heisman), head coach Terry Boss left for Major League Soccer.
Several players hit the transfer portal, including the reigning Pac-12 player of the year.
Over half the team was replaced. New coach comes in, his first head coaching gig after a successful career as an assistant.
Result: Trip to the College Cup, first in program history, and suspensions resulting from self reporting errors in tracking the number of yellow flags given one player.

  72. 3
    3

Wonder what happened to Chance Nolan. Did he just medically retire due to the injury sticking around from the Utah game? He was seemingly in the running to start at TCU this year and then abruptly left the program with no explanation, never going to another school and made his Instagram profile photo black.

Also, I think Throckmorton should get some reps in the Bowl Game. See how he performs in live action. Not much to lose regardless.

  73. 1
    2

It really would be nice to get some longer term, multi-year stability at the QB position for a change. Since I started undergrad at OSU in 2019, we’ve had, by my count, 7 different quarterbacks play meaningful snaps:

    Luton
    Gebbia
    Noyer
    Chance
    Ben
    DJU
    Aidan

  74. 2

Meanwhile, Villanova is playing SD State in Brookings – 27 deg, 35 mph wind. 10,000 in attendance – Villanova sports radio, gritty-voiced announcer calling the game – Game closer than anticipated. Sweet.

  75. 2
    2

All the top schools needing QBs are filling those spots fast. There’s not going to be much left for the rest if they were looking to jump into a starting situation with a good team. Beavs need to bring in a potential starter and a guy who can develop. Not going to get top guys but ones who have starting experience and better than any MW QB.

    Beavs QB targets –

Barnes from Utah. A gamer. Finds a way. Likely a top QB in the G5 teams
Green from Boise St. Dynamic but unrefined.
DJU – Would be the best available fit. Unlikely unless spots really fill up fast.
Patu from Stanford – was a highly rated recruit.
Leavitt – Does he want to come home?
Pyne – Coming off injury but was pretty productive at ND

  76. I thought I read that if a player is in the portal they can still play in their current team’s bowl game. Is that true? Does it happen much? My guess is the player is trying to avoid injury, so it’s not worth the risk.

    • Once they in the portal, they are no longer on the team and lose their scholarship. If they withdraw from the portal, they will need to be offered a scholarship by the team again.

  77. 3
    2

Quacks land Gabriel. Thompson is now in the portal. I don’t understand the Gabriel move, is there that much difference between Oregon/Oklahoma? My guess is the difference is NIL money. I’d rather play in the SEC if I had a choice.

  78. 1
    1

Beavs should get in touch with Kyle McCord from Ohio St and see if he wants to come out west.
Apparently the Buckeye fans were merciless to him all year long. He could be a true 5* qb passer at all levels of the field. DJ had much promise but didn’t deliver. McCord has 2-3 years still left right?

Oregon St would be glad to have him.

Consider the schools who aren’t shopping for qbs? I can only think of a handful. When athletes begin chasing the money, they lose out on a lot of stability over the 4-5 years of their career.

OSU should begin recruiting the guys who need or want a fresh start, Last Chance U/Next Chance U, as a way to avoid competing so much in direct NIL bidding wars…

  79. There are only so many starting QB jobs out there – my guess is playing time is more valuable than an NIL deal – of course a hefty NIL deal kind of insures a player will get reps. But how many QB with decent NIL deals will be back-ups coming out of spring practice? Probably more than a few. I’m glad we have an OC with Pac-12 bonafides, so he knows the landscape and can probably ID an undervalued QB.

Just checked the men’s hoop schedule so far, pretty sad we haven’t come within 10 points of another P5 team yet this season.

  80. I actually like the idea of BG and at least adding Leavitt if he wants to be back in Oregon.
He is an Oregon kid with a chip on his shoulder, highly successful at high school level and motivated to prove JS wrong about OSU… any info on his accuracy?

Beavs must begin the search for the Kelley Moore type kids who are just uncanny winners without the elite physical measurables.

  81. Good Lord, it never changes. Beavs are already down 11. Almost 7 seven-minute scoring drought. The Utah Valley team lost their HC to Cal and has literally all new players. Some dude who shoots 27% from the three-point line has already has already drained 2 or 3. Maybe The Beavs will get it together, but how long does Barnes put up with this? I guess it doesn’t matter after this year anyway.

Man you are a glutton for punishment. How can you even watch it? I already know the outcome and the dreadful process to endure to get to the outcome…no thanks for me.
Tinkle had the entire fan base behind him after year 1-2 with GP11 and Robinsons misfits. But once he located to the coaches sons and ran all of the other talent out of town, it has been a long downward trend. He is a terrible coach in all aspects and makes every game unwatchable through his own decisions.

  82. Bill mentioned Byson Barnes earlier(Utah QB transfer)
I was just looking and around and noticed Gundy started following him recently.
    Same with Ty Thompson

I can run circles around you, concerning the bible.

You also need to point out the hypocrisy, since you want to make it personal, schmuck.

I’m speaking against ignorance, hatred based on ignorance, and hypocritical apostacy based on ignorance. You’ll need to present me doing that which I speak against, for your personal attack to be true.

I’ve provided a simple challenge where you can try to prove that personal attack. But I think you’ll most likely deflect or just ignore it.

Dr Borg would highly disagree with you, if he were alive to giggle at this extreme ignorance.

Since you decided to do exactly as I predicted, I’ll just have a little fun.

Why is this picture of the President of Liberty University a direct violation of God’s First Commandment?
            https://www.liberty.edu/news/wp-content/uploads/sites/137/costin-oath-MD-720×480.jpg

If you’d ever read the bible, you would know that Jesus tells us why.

But apparently the President of Liberty University couldn’t be bothered to read that Jesus guy.

          • You’ll have to be careful using that term.

Christian Zionism is what you speak of. It’s very different from actual Zionism, which is basically just creating and recognizing Israel.

Nationalist Zionism has arisen within Israel since 1967. It’s indistinguishable from Revisionist Zionism, at this point, and even general Zionism has become it, if it hasn’t just enabled it with its silent affirmations.

          • 1
            2

It’s also good to note there is not an insignificant number of liberal Zionists who continue to speak against all atrocities.

I imagine they’re as frustrated as we were when our government used lies to justify war crimes against innocent people… which puts us in the worst position to try to chastise current events.

            1

            So… no answer is telling.

As I said, it’s really not hard, once you actually read the bible. I really didn’t expect an answer from you, since I don’t think you’re as interested in what Jesus actually said as you are using him as some bludgeon for a really poor attempt to deflect your ignorance of who Jesus was and what he taught.

It’s pretty fucking clear when people who ostensibly abide by the teachings in the bible act in direct contradiction of those same teachings… because the bible is pretty finite… even if you add the books of God’s truth that the evangelicals removed from the bible back in, because the bible absolutely says nothing about those who cherry-pick God’s truth for their own purposes.

            Or does it?

This has been a wholly predictable correspondence. I hope you enjoyed you being wholly predictable. I know I don’t really care.

You really don’t want to get in a discussion with me about transliterations of certain ideas and terms. I could bore the luck out of all of us with that shit.

          • And if you were even slightly astute, your first deflection should have been the wide open trap I set, which should have set you off on some statement like, “I knew you didn’t know anything about the bible, because that’s a violation of God’s Third Commandment, according to Jesus.”

I guess you took some of my fun away. But I’ll save it for another day.

          • Have you met me.
I can write a book on this stuff. I have written a book on this stuff.
It rolls off the fingers like humming a familiar tune.
You all chose one of the wrongest topics to talk about, because I can talk about it forward and backward and provide several sources off the top of my head which will make you all just cry in the end.
And then I can do it again.
This stuff is simply fascinating to me. Learning why I was programmed as a youngster to hate people for absolutely no reason, other than some pedo group decided somewhere along the line to transliterate the bible incorrectly and tell everyone to do so, because it had the power to do so, is simply a fascinating journey. Discovering the actual beuaty of the myth and how people today get it so wrong is magical.
Just on the topic of abortion alone, evangelicals are the biggest hypocrites out there. When women were a man’s property–in the 1800s United States–evangelicals insisted religion was their guidance to apply abortion to their property. Usually, it was because daddy didn’t want to have more kids, when he screwed his daughters. But often it was wives.
It was the 1800s, after all.
Fast forward to the 20th Century, and tehy did a 180, once the sexual revolution came about. They did this because they still think in some way women should be the second class citizens they once were. And them having fun doing the sex stuff isn’t fair to the weak minds of insecure men.
Until 1967 and the Pope having a brand new discussion with God, birth control was perfectly acceptable to Catholics. I knew more women in the church who had abortions as a kid. They were made to have them by the church, before they became nuns. The rule back then was that abortions didn’t happen once the fetus kicked (or showed life).
Those whose were made to carry the fetus to birth then thanked their captors by having to raise the child they gave birth to, until the child was adopted.\
It’s simply fascinating stuff, and I can tell you so many ancillary stories I’ve collected, over the years.

          • Jesus speaks directly to taking God’s name in vain, btw.
He says swearing an oath by using God’s name is doing so in vain. He doesn’t say, “Make an oath using God’s name, but only if you plan to honor that oath.”
He pretty much says, “Using God’s name in swearing an oath means you are playing on the idea that you don’t have full faith in God.”
And he’s correct in his logic.

          • Oh… and the trap.

I won’t write that one out, but the conclusion is that the President of Liberty University is holding some other God than who is in the Bible before the God who is in the Bible. He’s using the Bible itself as an idol for that proxy God. And we know this, because he doesn’t even know he’s taking the Lord’s name in vain… and because of several inequities his “faith” has wrongly projected onto his idol.

          • I

            Don’t

            Care

What you know or don’t know about Jesus or the Bible. Riling you up is easier to do than to a 4 year old.

And you fell for it hook, line and sinker.

            Get it now? Trap?

          • You think this is me going off?

            lol… you just don’t know.

I could go on for days on this subject. The only issue is that absolutely nobody wants to talk about it, because they’re so insecure on the topic. It’s simply a fascinating dichotomy.

Of course, it’s also dangerous, since blind hatred foments violence. But that’s one of the inequities projected by the publicly pious who believe more in Calvinism than they do sharing loaves and wine with those in need–a couple of other Jesus-related things, if you didn’t get the reference.

    • Honestly the women rolled with zero competition, #1 for jsu was their lone scoring threat. Is Prime still keeping receipts for jsu?

I’m liking the play by Shuler, she makes good passes, has good handles, good footwork, she and hunter together really nice class for guards something SR has struggled to find.

  83. Dodgers sign Ohtanei for $700MM!?. Thats some serious NIL money!!! Oh well, at least they have him for many years unlike colleges with the players they sign.

  84. 16

At some point student athletes can pay for their own scholarships if they are making a few hundred thousand dollars from NIL. Tax payers help with athletic scholarships and then we are asked to donate to the NIL fund, that doesn’t sit well with me.

I also think athletes would spend their money different if they had to use some of their money for tuition.

The NCAA went from having student athletes breathing down their necks asking for profit sharing to now the fans are financially rewarding athletes and the NCAA is still not sharing profits. So now we spend more money on tickets making the schools and ncaa more money and we pay more out of our hard earned dollars to keep/recruit players to the school of our liking? The NCAA is very, very smart.

“Spartan Tailgate can confirm that Michigan State is set to hire Minnesota defensive coordinator & linebackers coach Joe Rossi. It was just reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN. The 2021 Broyles Award nominee led the Golden Gophers to a top-10 defense in the entire nation in both 2021 and 2022. Rossi has produced 10 NFL Draft picks in just the last four NFL Draft classes. During Jonathan Smith’s tight-lipped search, industry sources out west did tell Spartan Tailgate that former Washington Huskies head coach and current Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach Jimmy Lake was the other finalist for the role.

Prior to this past season, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman named Rossi the 8th-best assistant coach in the entire nation…”

  85. We need a Beav to sign a ridiculous contract like this one day. Maybe Adley can get a contract in the 200M range his next contract. One full year in and he’s already the top catcher in MLB. I think Buster got $165M and that was in 2013.

A lot of people will speak ill of the basketball team, but it’s clear they are improving. Utah Valley won 25 games last year and were 6-3 going into the game. And that win vs App State suddenly looks a lot better (they are NET 52). They have a suddenly dangerous nucleus with Rataj back. People can’t just double Pope anymore with Bilodeau and Rataj tearing it up. Ibekwe and Marial are also getting a lot better and Lake was a steal. They are starting to move the ball better on offense which is a key for WT offenses to succeed. They still have a lot of stuff to shake out. But chemistry is starting to develop and that is THE most important thing in college basketball.

Is this the WT burner account? I like your positive outlook but this team is gonna get cooked in conf play. 3 OT wins. Bad scoring droughts. We are 342nd in 3 pt percentage. 255th points scored. 287th in assists. 308th in turnovers. We are a good free throw shooting team though. Top 50 in that stat. I think they’re are a few talented players but WT is notorious for stifling good players.

    • Those seem reasonable. Norris being a former teammate of Golden seems like he’d trust the program and defensive scheme of Bray. Don’t know much about Mason White other than he was on an awful TCU defense and was a JUCO guy previously. We need a bunch of depth in the secondary though so hopefully we can pick him up.

      • Wells (C)- 69 PFF grade, much better at pass blocking than run blocking. Looks like a starting caliber player.

Norris (DL)- 64 PFF grade at Northern Colorado (roughly translates to a 54 at P5 level). Didn’t play a whole lot last year, so I’ll assume there was an injury involved. Similar rating the previous year. Looks like depth at DL, but he’ll need to add weight.

White (CB)- 58 PFF grade in limited action. Hard to make much of him, as he was a JC transfer playing on a bad defense. Looks like either depth at CB, or a potential S convert.

Well that little shit Jonathan Smith has double screwed me now!
Rossi, the former Minnesota defensive coordinator
that he hired at Michigan State is a great coach.
In essence, he was PJ Fleck’s Trent Bray. Previous DC was an abject failure, and as soon as this guy took over a few games into what appeared to be a lost season the defense immediately turned around and the last three years, not including this last season, he has had top 10 elite defenses.
I figured we would lose him either to a lower level head coaching gig, or to a blue blood defensive coordinator position, but I never thought to a lateral move. This is a disaster for Minnesota football. I would really love to give Smith a knee to the groin!

  88. Sam Leavitt is reportedly committing to ASU. Interesting considering ASU had a young qb that was pretty highly rated. Maybe he is leaving and I didn’t see it.

  89. I’ll start up a new thread to continue the conversation.
These longer threads make it difficult to post quick updates when recruiting/visit news comes up.
