Guys, if you want something done about the refs, simply sign your name in the comment area below. I'm going to send this to Larry Scott and Dave Cutaia if we get enough signatures. Their email addresses are lscott@pac-10.org and dcutaia@pac-10.org if you want to write your own letter as well.
Dear Larry Scott,
I, _________ (the undersigned), ask that PAC-10 officiating crews be reprimanded for their incompetence and negligence as noted below:
1. The Arizona State @ Oregon State game in which the crew allowed Vontaze Burfict to headbutt Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz and throw punches throughout the game without ejection.
2. The Oregon State @ Arizona game in which James Rodgers was tackled well after a touchdown, a play the resulted in Rodgers missing the remainder of the game and possibly the entire year. In the same game, Jacquizz Rodgers was twice thrown to the ground after the whistle and without his helmet on.
We understand that violence and injuries are part of the game, but it is the job of the officials to protect players in defenseless positions and once a play is over so senseless injuries do not occur. This pattern of negligence has been common in the PAC-10 conference for years, and we hope this letter is one of many to reach your desk and ignite change. Such injuries not only effect the teams we as fans root for, but when star players are injured in this manner it reduces the conference as a whole. We ask that you reprimand the crews who officiated these aforementioned games, and any past or future games in which referees failed in their duty to protect defenseless players.
Sincerely,
(The undersigned)

Reprimand the officiating crews
Agreed.
Anybody have the email address for Larry Scott so these can be sent to him?
Also, I think we need a letter to Bobby D because as an AD he needs to make a stink every time a Beaver is seriously injured on the field.
There needs to be some fuckin’ accountability.
Beavocalypse, read the third sentence–the commish’s email and the guy who handles officials are both there.
Not only were these 2 atrocities mishandled; in the Oregon State (OSU) at Arizona game alone there were 3 poorly called pass interference penalties and AT LEAST 2 replays which were overturned (negatively for OSU) with a complete lack of conclusive evidence. AND at least one “catch” by Arizona was trapped more clearly than the overturned call against OSU – and there was no apparent review on the play.
Yes, the officiating crew needs big-time improvement!
Those calls were seemingly bad, but the idea isn’t to whine about judgment calls, it’s to demand protection of defenseless players and senseless injuries like we saw yesterday. The email addresses are above so you can write a letter to them about anything that’s bothering you.
Agreed, but it does drive me crazy that the officials cannot even get the spirit of instant replay correct. By overturning, they are in essence saying that their brethen missed a call so obviously that a correction is necessary, so the evidence has to be overwhelming to do so. I think the Rodgers 18 yard reception probably hit the ground, but there was absolutely no angle that would indicate the TD should be overturned. These P-10 officials absolutely drive me insane and not so much for missed calls (part of the game) but more for not knowing how to apply rules (anyone remember the Bernard fumble against the Huskies in 2007?) and their lack of control of games.

Add my signature and if there is anyway we can get the so called out of bounds td that James made given back we should demand it back. The game announcers said that they had a still photo showing that James was in bounds. If that is truly the case then we won the game 35-27 not 29-27.

Add my name. I’m really upset that Riley and Co. didn’t make major protests after Quiz’s helmet was ripped off multiple times. If their QB gets special treatment, near the sideline, our players should at least receive the treatment called for in the rule book near the center of the field.
I agree I’d like to see Riley or someone, go after those officials like any quality coach of a quality team would. You think Chip would have allowed that to happen to his boys? He’d have to be restrained. Harbaugh? Bo Pelini (Nebraska?) No way. He’d probably even get flagged, which he has before, and it hurt the team in that situation. BUT, his players respect him for it.
I have a boss that never goes to bat for me at me stupid job. I do it pretty well, and if there is a dispute…nothing. I have lost the respect I had. I think the Beavers would be a better team if they had a coaching staff that would better support them. But they don’t.
one clarification on your petition. Burfict was indeed flagged after he head butted Katz against ASU. One of our offensive lineman then shoved Burfict. They were both flagged and the penalties off setting.
So, it was offsetting. Net result. Nothing. He should have been booted and the OSU lineman should have been given some leeway for his indiscretion. Burfict ejected, and a 15 yard penalty. OSU warned for retaliation.
But no. The officials are too inept. I think they need to take a time out. Send a text to Larry Scott and the head of officials and get there opinion…live.
That’s not what I was saying. Here’s his direct quote
1. The Arizona State @ Oregon State game in which the crew allowed Vontaze Burfict to headbutt Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz without a penalty or ejection from the game. The infraction occurred directly in front of an official.
“Without a penalty” is incorrect. If you want to be taken seriously, at least get the facts straight. I do however agree with his premise. Pac-10 officiating and replay crews are awful and need overhauled.
Yes, but the punches Burfict threw on the ensuing play went unpenalized and they were seen by anyone with eyes on the field.
um, did you read the letter? No where the in the letter is that mentioned.
I’m not really arguing the semantics of the letter. I’m talking about the incident itself. The fact the refs either failed to penalize the act directly, or unjustly called ‘offsetting’ penalties as if both teams were equally at fault for what happened is shameful. And to take it further, he should have been ejected and was not. The next step, will be that the P10 will do nothing even in retro to Burfict or the Refs.
ASU/UW:
“Vontaze Burfict sat out the entire first quarter after being benched by the Arizona State coaching staff for reckless play against Oregon State last week.
Behind Burfict, the Sun Devils’ defense rose up to stop a promising Washington drive into ASU territory. Jamaar Jarrett sacked Locker for a 3-yard loss to force fourth-and-18 from the Arizona State 31.”
Wow…a quarter. That’s about what I figured. That’s nothing. The ASU Defense was out for 3 possessions in the first half, the 3rd ending the half. He missed 24 plays.
Burfict did give a right hook to one of our players (Unga?) and wasn’t penalized for it.
It’s kind of like the ejection thing is off the table. It just doesn’t happen anymore. Did the rule change? If anyone watch the K-State/Nebraska game Thursday, a K-State guy had the QB wrapped up, and literally and purposefully dropped an elbow right on top of his head like a friggin’ WWF move. He got flagged. But my understanding is that should be an ejection. Why is the NCAA so scared to eject people? Punches are off the table for negotiation. You’re out.
I’m orangejulius, and I support this message.

Horrible calls, and you only pointed out two of the most egregious ones.

They let stand the only call that has conclusive evidence the UA receiver was down no closer than the half yard line. There was a big turf mark where is shoulder dug into the ground at the 1/2 yard line and the ball was just behind that, so really that ball should have been placed just outside the 1/2 yard line about 22 inches from the goal line. With James catch it looked like he had pinched the ball so even if part of it touched the ground he was demonstrating he was controlling it all he could. By the spirit if “indisputable evidence” both that and the James touchdown in the back should have stood. If your cleat touches inbounds before the outside of your shoe just barely grazes the line by a millimeter that is a touchdown. They even said the turf that was uprooted from his foot was all green.
I think there are poor calls in every game, and it just sounds petty to whine about it afterward. I fully understand complaining and heckling during the game, but only the hugely bad calls (Yvenson’s ‘fumble’ or Oregon-Oklahoma) merit post-game complaints.
In the case of James last night, players in the end zone are frequently hit that long after crossing the goal line, without a flag being thrown. And the headbutt was strange and uncalled for, but had no power behind it and was incapable of causing any damage to Katz. The offsetting penalties were, again, pretty much what always would happen in that situation.
I’m with Riley on this one – keep your head down and play the game. I’ve seen him do his share of yelling at the refs, and when a situation calls for it, I believe he’ll stand up for the player.
Angry-
I think this post is “borderline b*tch” material. This is coming from an Angry Beaver fan. Honestly, the calls where not as bad as I’ve seen in the past, and if you are shocked that dirty plays happen in the Pac-10, get over it. I don’t think Adam Hall’s tackle of James Rodgers was done with malicious intent, it was just stupid. Perhaps he couldn’t see the lines on the field and didn’t realize he was in the endzone until the crowd screamed- I don’t know. He didn’t really horse collar James-check the vid on my blog. The plays with Quizz were questionable, we are talking split second reactions by kids on a field. All of us get instant replay in the comfort of our lazy boy- players don’t even with jumbotrons. Arizona’s players are taught to play to the whistle, sometimes that leads to overzealous results. Quizz was never hurt, he just sorta flailed around. Anyway, I agree that the referee’s are donkey’s. Yes they miss obvious calls. But they probably only miss 10% or less of the infractions that happen. Should that number be higher? Yes, but that’s what you get with college ref’s. Pro ref’s probably miss 2% or less. High School is probably 40%. The Pac-10 commish is not going to fix these numbers.
Do you think your post really helps or only makes OSU fans look like little b*tches?
Luv, OSUBFB
Dude, you’re an ass.
“Don’t make our school look like bitches?”
If you don’t agree, don’t “sign”, but this is a fair argument.
When Pac-10 refs make egregious errors of judgment on the field, especially concerning late hits, punches, or headbutts- it snowballs until a game like Washington a couple years back, where players are fighting after several plays.
It’s no consolation if your school “doesn’t look like a bitch” then, when a player goes down with a damaged knee or a broken collarbone from a horse collar tackle, or a pinched nerve in the neck from a facemask. What you have then is a case where a player is out for a season, or worse, their career…when it all could have been avoided if the fans put pressure on the proper authorities (either our school’s AD or Larry Scott)
The reason WHY the NFL refs miss less calls is that money is on the line for these player contracts and that an appropriate system is in place for people to demand that refs are held accountable for their actions, which in this league (especially for replay booth fuckers) they are not.
So if you’re going to call some fans a bitch because we want to see a tough game played within the rules, with the motivation of protecting ALL players, not just ours, then I guess I’ll take that…but I’d rather be a bitch in this case than a douchebag that did nothing because “this stuff happens”. Those guys are just too cool to look like a bitch.
At least I’ll be the fan that cares about the health of my team’s players when all is said and done.
-signed, Beavocalypse.
Hey genius- how do you know what the “checks and balances” are for ref’s in the Pac-10 compared to the NFL? Answer- you don’t. As for bitching about ref’s, it’s amateur. Yes, the ref’s suck. Get over it. As for horse collaring- both Rodgers Bros are midgets. What do you think is going to happen when a 6’2″ player tackles a 5’9″ player?
Players blow out their knee’s at Alabama or Michigan or Penn St, on normal plays as well as freak/bad plays, the difference at OSU is that fans write letters to the Commissioner when their star player gets hurt. Lame.
Do you think OSU’s offense/defense/special teams hasn’t hurt an opposing player before?
Please spare me the angle about you caring about the players first. What a joke. You care because they win. Period. We all do. The truth hurts.
I don’t like seeing late or dirty hits on any player, so speak for yourself.
Look at Stephen Hawking over here–0f course I care because this happened to my team. That I wouldn’t take the effort to write the Big-10 commissioner if this happened to Penn State doesn’t mean I wouldn’t understand and support someone who does.
You must be a third generation inbred if you think tackling players who lose a helmet is good.
I didn’t say it was good. I said that bitching about it was weak.
The Stephen Hawking reference was a winner. Nobody can form a come back when you reference Stephen Hawking….
As for 3rd generation inbred, again it’s hard to come back against a DNA attack.
Hawking and DNA aside, sending this “petition” to Larry Scott is a bitch move.
The ref’s in the Pac-10 are suspect- tell me something I don’t know.
Okay, I will tell you something you don’t know: your comments are not very good.
You acknowledge the refs are bad.
If you want your comments to be good, you need to tell me (a) what you are doing to fix the problem and (b) how being outraged about the officials and doing something about it is a bad thing.
Drafting a petition, having people sign it, and sending it to the commissioner might result in nothing. Actually, it probably will result in nothing. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it.
Oh, and bitching about calls is weak. But the non-calls that get me furious involve defenseless players. It’s not like we’re petitioning about a holding call.
Neither Rodger bro is anywhere near 5’9″ in reality; I actually went to school with them. But calling them midgets is F’ed up, dbag, and its no excuse to allow other players to late hit them or horsecaller-facemask them, or hit them after their helmet has popped off.
Nobody here is complaining about bad calls. Holding, PI, that stuff happens. But when a player’s health is on the line, and the refs blow it by not protecting them, that deserves action.
So next time you want to get all pissy about how your man-ego is hurt by protecting other people, get your facts and issues straight, or perhaps learn to read first.
I think we should stop feeding the fucking trolls, no way this asshole is actually an OSU fan. I personally don’t think that the Rodgers injury was anything malicious, warranted a flag or otherwise. It was simply a freak play. That said, the three replays that they ran, they royally fucked up. Not only did they screw it up, they took way too long doing it. It was probably the same booth official from UW 2007.
Also, the helmet thing, not sure how best to take care of that, they need quicker whistles and better field control. A good official will communicate with players on the field throughout the game. They should issue a verbal warning and then throw a flag. I think really what is sad about these refs, they aren’t professionals. They don’t control the field and don’t understand the true nature of the rules. The players out here are amateurs, just about everyone else around them is a professional, including the refs.
Most pass interference calls are on ‘accident’. But they call them don’t they? They also don’t result in season ending injuries. It would have been an issue if it happened to almost anyone in the Pac 10 other than the Beavers. It’s been an on going issue and it seems the Beavers are on the short end of it many times.
I completely 100% support this!!!!! I am sick and tired of these effing so-called officiating reff’s! No call on that hit on James in the endzone was the last straw!!! A man’s carrer could be over, I pray to the heaven’s above that is to the truth, because of a late hit that should have been penalized! And to pour salt in that wound, the touchdown was taken away! Grrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!! There were plenty of other missed calls as well.
As another angry beaver fan put it…. this is all down right disgraceful and flat out unacceptable!
I am a Beaver Beliver that cares about her team and the amazing athletes that make up that team.

Whether or not the sited plays were egregious or not, the petition makes a very valid point.
Please add me to the list
My wife and I watched AZ 1st TD over and over in slow motion and there was no way he was in. He was down on the 2 yard line and slid in. I didn’t know that momentum accounted for a TD. I really thought when the refs had replay, they would get it right. It seems the replay officials leaned a certain direction in their reviews. Not whining, you just want the right and fair call. But this looked blatant.

I am a duck fan but sign and agree
The instant replay in this game was terrible.
I would like to add that helmet to helmet hits like against Barner should be flagged automatically regardless if a block changed his trajectory, they player was leading with his head. If those calls were automatic maybe it would cause players to think differently. I understand football is violent, but protecting players under the conditions of the Beaver players and under the conditions of Barner can prevent injuries that do not have to be a part of the game.
Agreed.
My take:
Quizz’s helmet is not getting “ripped off”, it’s coming off easier than most due to it’s size relative to his head and the bulk of his hair. Also, he may not be strapping the chin strap tight enough. Many players do this for comfort reasons. A tight helmet and strap always caused me headaches in my HS playing days.
The 3 main instances of his helmet coming off and play continuing that I remember are:
Once in Boise State… defender should have been flagged because the whistle was blowing like crazy but the defender continued. This is regardless of Quizz’s helmet coming off or not.
The first time in the 4th quarter at Arizona… his helmet popped off and by rule the official must blow the play dead. But Quizz continues running and the whistle isn’t heard until he’s already wrapped up. No flag warranted in my opinion. But if I’m the ref, I tell Quizz that by rule the play must be blown dead if the ball carrier’s helmet comes off. Even though it’s the player’s responsibility to know the rules.
The 2nd time same game… they’re already wrapped up and scuffling when his helmet comes off, the whistle blows and it continues for just a second, nothing violent. Happens all the time in every game ever played. No flag required IMO.
So here’s a question, if it keeps happening, why doesn’t Quizz figure out how to keep his helmet on? If it’s that big of a personal safety risk I would think he and/or the coaches would figure this out.
Regarding James’ injury TD play:
Albeit I have seen late hits in the endzone when a TD has been scored, I don’t think that hit on James was late. Watch it again, the defender is trying to knock the ball out and jumps up on James right at the goal line. If James had already crossed the line by a couple steps and it was obviously clear then ok the hit is late, but in this case it’s not late.
Lastly, I think the officials get lulled into letting stuff slide early in the game. Maybe a little extra shove isn’t really worth a 15 yard PF penalty. The problem is, if allowed, this behavior continues into the 4th quarter and becomes more violent and puts personal safety unnecessarily at risk. This late game not-stopping-when-the-whistle-blows stuff could be easily corrected by the officials giving one verbal warning early in the game to set a precedent. Second offense, 15 yard flag, period. It comes down to what earlier posters have said… the officials need to have control of the game, and they need to set the standard early. Otherwise you get bush league games like Boise.
Gentlemen, it is now know that ex-Arizona alum Jim Fogletance was the review official for this game. This makes me sick to my stomach. Integrity of the game is at stake, folks. I highly suggest writing your commissioner on your own in addition to this petition.
Agreed.

lol you all need to stop acting like dorks with this petition shit.
It will mean nothing to the people that matter in the Pac-10
The plays on Jacquizz weren’t that bad, the whistle couldn’t be heard.
The James play was unfortunate but nothing bad happened. This wasnt a late hit or anything. Sucks the dude got hurt but thats life and he’ll play again next season.
This happens to programs across the country, with far less talent than the Beavers.
Stop your bitching.
You must not have watched the first half of the football game then. Say what you want about the hits but the replays speak for themselves. 3 blown replays and they took too long. What a joke.
Blame the helmet manufacturers. Blame James Rodger’s ligament.
