Regarding the game, anyone else getting the feeling the Beavers are on the cusp of actually being good? I almost want to go against my prediction, and I would were it not for the coaching staff. Meaning, I don't trust the coaches will have the right players on the field at the start of the game, which will cost them points. One other thing: Arizona hasn't yet earned my respect. They have a lofty rating, but do any of us who follow the PAC-10 truely believe Arizona is the 9th best team in the country? Eh. I think they're more in the 25 range.

I've got some gin ready just in-case. Warren, you drink a Shirley Temple.

Go Beavs.

  1. I have a more positive “feeling” about this game than expected. I think OSU is putting it together with fine special teams play, an offense with a diversifying number of weapons, and a defense that is playing faster and more instinctively (e.g. Dockery).

I think Banker would love to beat Stoops (who is so lauded for being a master of defense), and the quicker D players will therefore see significant time. That doesn’t remove the potential for Rueben Robinson to be erased on a run up the middle, but I am less worried this game than I might otherwise have been.

    OSU victory today.

  2. Going with Knob Creeks. And my aformentionsed chicken wings. And elk burgers.

    Bloody Mary’s this morning.
    Bloody Wildcats this afternoon.

Elk Season (firearm) kicks off tomorrow…I think this is going to be a great weekend.

  3. It’s interesting what a win can do. Now even the cynics like the Beavs in this game. I can see and feel why, as I feel it too, but be weary. Things usually aren’t so linear, and with the Beavs it’s not surprising to see one or two steps back after a step forward.

    Heartbreak as time expires.
(Gotta love that +8 line, though).

    • I think what would be linear is the home team, with a great defense and a sold out crowd, continuing its winning ways and taking the game.

What stuck with me after the ASU game was not just that OSU won, but that so many players and all three units finally contributed meaningfully. I think OSU’s offensive diversity, bolstered with the return of James Rodgers, surprises the Wildcats and provides more challenges than they appreciate – it’s not just the Rodgers they have to deal with. That said, I would like to see another RB get a role in today’s game.

I’d love to see Poyer; a high school QB and obviously a good runner, get some time in the “Wildcat” and have the threat of a real throw….(too much to ask, I know). Also, remember at UW a few years back when it was Quizz at FB and James at TB with a pitch to James? I’d like to see that again, maybe even with McCants getting the pitch.

      • The diversity you saw last week was out of necessity, not a paradigm shift in the Beavers offensive philosophy.

It will be interesting to see if all plays go through James Rodgers now that he’s back. Hopefully the coaches learned something last week–we’ll see. It’s an interesting subplot.

        • Interesting point. I wonder if OSU/Katz will be making a concerted effort to “get James involved/going” or if Katz will be told to go with the open receiver(s).

Erickson made a post-game interview comment about OSU “changing the depth of its routes” and that being effective and requiring adjustments on behalf of ASU. It sure seemed to benefit Katz, who finally had a decent completion rate.

As many have pointed out here, the change in routes this week may have to be shorter to get rid of the ball quickly. I’ll agree with that, but expect OSU to take a few shots downfield as they did against TCU.

Hopefully, Katz throws to the open man and keeps the chains moving as opposed to focusing on James.

  4. Said it before, but I think there’s more of a paradigm shift then you guys are realizing…look at the diversity of receivers at Boise State!

Anyone else thinking UCLA still looks like 2nd worst in the PAC 10? Is the conference really that deep?

    • Well, they are not looking good at all against a very marginal CAL team. Or maybe Cal would be good without Kevin Riley under center…it’s unbelievable how sluggish he continues to be after 4 years. Slow on his feet, slow release, slow decision making…I don’t think he’s improved at all since 2008. Run game is all that’s keeping them alive.

Owa is making his presence known for UCLA, however.

  5. Gentlemen, we have a situation developing in Columbia, SC. It looks like Oregon could be #2 after this weekend with a National Title theirs to lose. Maybe we should load up on that gin after all.

  6. South Carolina 21, Alabama 3

The Ducks are probably #2 after this weekend and even have a shot at #1 if this holds up. Good for the Pac-10! Beavs win and it will be an amazing day! Defense needs a few sacks, to hold on 3rd downs and to get off the field. Possession again will be key for the offense to maintain. Mix it up good, intermediate passes are as long as we really should try (one deep ball try max), and hopefully Katz will realize that if he has been looking downfield for awhile that Quizz is probably open in the flats. A few screen plays and a couple Wild Beavers would be good too…GO BEAVS!! Get the “W”!

  7. Don’t be so quick to count out Alabama..Arkansas built a huge lead too. They’ve shown this season they’re very good at the comeback and finishing strong.

    • Definitely. Just missed a FG, though. Pressure has to be mounting now.

I’m not sure if I should root for the Ducks since the conference needs the national respect. I’m scared to think of their recruiting classes if they keep ascending. Then again, I firmly believe when your #1 rival is good it puts more pressure for you to become better (we saw the reverse of this with the Ducks and baseball).

  8. I just saw Brady Camp is out today. This could be a problem…Reese isn’t a great blocker. I’m not sure what lineup they’ll go with, but I consider this a blow.

  9. What do you guys make of UCLA? Still adjusting to schemes? Neheisel just overrated?

Re: Oregon. If Alabama loses, and after UO stomps WSU ala New Mexico and PSU, and LaMichael James keeps inching up in the Heismann votes, UO is going to move up…could be to #1. Dropping 50 or 60+ points has an effect on voters. Cranking out big TD runs impresses voters. This is an unlikeable position for WSU to find themselves in…

  10. Root for ‘Bama to lose this week, for Ohio State to lose down the road, and for the Ducks to keep rolling.

Personally, I want to see the Ducks come into Reser as the nation’s #1 ranked team, and then see the Beavers thrash them in the 2010 Civil War.

    That would be perfect!

  11. Nice half by WSU so far, but I can’t see them keeping up with UO for four quarters. As I recall, UO turned it on in the second half against Tennessee. I expect Kelly will let the players hear about it at halftime and they’ll run away from WSU in the second half.

  12. At least the SEC is legitimately deep this year….worthy of respect. Got so sick of LSU coasting to the top of the ratings by beating up on Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Miss St etc..and bragging about the incredible difficulty of their schedule.

  13. I think we just saw James’ last play this season. That looked like a torn meniscus. Hope I’m wrong, but I’ve spent too much time with orthopedic surgeons. Luckily he never red-shirted.

These refs are absolutely atrocious not calling a late hit on that.

    • James will always be one of my favorite Beaver players ever. During his four years he has done so much for the program on and off the field. I remember back when he was a freshman and no one knew who he was or where he came. Watching him win the civil war that year and run over Maryland in the bowl game I knew he was going to be a major player for the Beavers but not to this extent. I had no clue then that his brother would join the team and that the two of them would become the face of the program. His true impact will be felt for years to come. I hope so much for him and Quizz that his injury isn’t what it appears to be, I would hate for this to be their last game together. Here’s to the Beavers coming out strong in the second half and winning this game for James.

    • I’m actually blanking on the rule for this. I think it’s if you play 3 games you can’t red shirt. So he probably is done now that I think about it, since he played in 4 games. (Though he only played half of this game and the BSU game, so that could be a loop hole).

      Anyone else know the rule?

      • wiki: There is also a medical redshirt that may be obtained to replace a season lost to injury. A medical redshirt, called a “medical hardship” by the NCAA, can be granted by the governing body for a season lost completely or almost completely to injury. If a player plays in 30% or less of his/her team’s games, then suffers a season ending injury, a medical redshirt may be granted. A medical redshirt can allow a player to gain additional eligibility beyond the standard four academic calendar years. On rare occasions, a player may be allowed to play in his or her sixth year of college if he or she suffered a serious injury which kept him or her from playing for more than one season.

remember he missed the ASU game, so he has played in TCU, Louisville, 1/2 Boise, and 1/2 Zona

        3 out of the team’s 12 games = 25 percent.

he could redshirt if he wanted to.

          • He was only played and been available to play for 180 minutes so far this year (Played 5 minutes of 2nd half in Boise and played less than 10 minutes of second quarter against UA. NCAA rule has been changed to 30% of your season. Dividing the 3 full games (180 minutes he has been available) by 12 gives you 25% so he should get the medical hardship. If a bowl or 13th game counts that would only make it a lower %. Unless Bobby D. is the worst salesman in the world we should get the medical hardship granted.

    • Quizz doesn’t seem as shifty. He had a lot of space on that 18 yard run…in the past he would have done a Barry Sanders and got around that guy.

  14. James’ loss really hurts. Such a cheap and totally unnecessary play.

However, I’m going to be really be impressed if we can pull this off without him. We were really rolling before he went out.

    You stay golden, Kahut…

    • We can’t cover, and we can’t tackle. So of COURSE we’re going to get annihilated by POS screens and slants all day.

Hey, Banker only had a week to figure out how to cover a simple screen pass.

  15. One missed PAT I can deal with, shit happens. Two in a row and the second one looking like dead duck is unacceptable. This is bringing back nightmares from the LSU game.

  16. It’s going to get real dicey. No way we stop them on this drive. Just how much time will it take. We’re going to get the ball back with something left…can we burn it out.

  17. Good series by the D there to not let them get the first. Should of had at least one pick, Collins had a pick 6. Coulda shoulda woulda though. I like the way this game is going now, run the clock down and get some points, maybe kick a field goal to get kahut’s confidence back. We cannot have questions about our kicking game at this point in the year. How is that not a penalty for throwing Quizz down without a penalty??

  18. This is making me sick. Someone needs to tell our team the game isn’t over even if you have the ball up 9 with 4 minutes to go. The coaching staff won’t because they also think the game is over. This happens all the time, we don’t finish games.

  19. I hate to bring them up but the Ducks are the best at finishing games. Chip Kelly has his foot on the accelerator the whole game and that mentality trickles down to the whole team. You can never have a big enough lead against pac-10 offenses.

  20. Guys, I think this game calls for a petition. The Beavers lost their best all purpose player on a late hit. The defender needs to be tossed from the game, but at the very least a 15 yard penalty. Quizz took two more late hits without a helmet on. Someone is going to die because of these refs.

    • Absolutely agree. This isn’t the first game we’ve had horrible missed calls, either. Last game with that ASU douchebag and his headbutt, the facemask-into-horsecaller…

      These refs have been atrocious.

      • I wrote several petitions last year (Taylor Mays hit, etc), and refs wound up getting reprimanded (not saying it’s because of the petition, but it didn’t hurt).

I’m going to be gone until Sunday night (going to the Channel Islands) so I won’t have time to do it. If you guys could get together and compile all the missed/dangerous plays I’ll draw something up on Sunday, we can send it to the commish, and demand some answers and recourse.

I’ve got James twice now (BSU, Arizona) and Quizz with two hits after losing a helmet (Arizona). Any others I’m forgetting?

    • i was raging and cringing after james’s injury. couldn’t believe they didn’t call penalties for the late hits on quizz. such utter bullshit

  21. Agree totally on the refs. I think they missed 3 that should have gone against UA. Of course…they DIDN’T miss the hit on the sideline of Foles. Luckily that didn’t cost them the game. This seemed like incredibly biased refereeing in this game. Blatantly so. Beavs eek out a win, no thanks to the D, but the O is looking good, particularly the passing game. Katz is hopefully going to continue to improve, and now that JR is out, he’ll have to mix up the receivers. JR being out is terrible, however the silver lining is it makes the receiver corps step it up even more. The biggest loss of JR is going to be on the special teams.

    • James’ loss is big for two other reasons:

      1. The depth chart. Can’t afford to lose another receive now or Catchings becomes the #1, and that is frightening. Wheaton is just as good as James at WR and KR.

      2. Having two vertical WRs puts a ton of pressures on a secondary and opens up a lot of things.

      Wheaton became indispensable tonight.

  22. I posted this elsewhere…but here’s my stance on what happened in this game with the refs.

It will be interesting to see what the people at Pure-Orange say..(my account works there again..strange)…

    Here’s the link to that.
    http://www.pure-orange.net/cgi/anyboard.cgi/bscpigskin2?cmd=get&cG=6373039373&zu=3637303937&v=2&gV=0&p=

But if you’d rather just read, here’s what I said.

I’m happy for the victory- but I want to say something that might not seem popular…

James Rodgers injury is a symptom of Riley (and I suppose Bobby D’s) reluctance to yell at refs in the game, get players or referees reprimanded after the game, or petition for the officials to protect players in general.

How many times have we seen teams take advantage of Riley’s lack of passion or courage on the sideline to show any other emotion beside a ****-eating smile?

It’s okay to be a good guy, Riley, but you can’t be a pacifist if your players are getting injured- especially on a late hit. Riley should have been all over the refs, or at least promising that his university would make a stink if this kept up.

I think any smart recruit would have good reason to be scared that Riley won’t protect them by making refs accountable for their actions. And I’d imagine a parent that knows the game of football they would be justified in asking the staff at OSU if they are going to do the right thing if their sons take cheapshot after cheapshot.

I’d encourage Beaver nation to write to Larry Scott because I think our athletic department is letting us down in a big way this year…

Until then, I’m going to remain concerned about the health of our players. If that makes me a downer, so be it, but there is a good chance Mr. Rodgers career at OSU could be over (not convinced he’d get a medical hardship in the worst case scenario) and I think the fault lays on the shoulders of the coaching staff and AD.

    Howe

    • Good post. I agree with you. Opie doesn’t seem to have any fire in him at all. Yeah, he’s a nice guy, but he needs to unleash some whoopass on those refs once in a while. This game was particularly poorly officiated.

    • Is there any proof that a guy like Stoops gets more calls because he’s constantly in the ear of the refs? Sorry, I don’t think Riley suddenly going aggro on the refs is going to prevent any injuries.
James in my opinion is the best all around football player I’ve seen at OSU, and I’m sick that he’s likely done for the year. However, that play did not appear dirty to me. Plays like that happen all the time. Had his knee not buckled, I don’t think anyone would have given it a second thought.

  23. Do you guys know which crews officiated tht ASU and UA games?

I don’t think we can do much about BSU–I remember those clowns being WAC officials.

  24. James should be good for a hardship waiver, as the number is 30% not 20% per a rule change several years ago. He should be at 25% (4 games) right now.

  25. Does anyone know the extent of J Roders injury? I hear people saying it’s an ACL tear but he didn’t look like he was in unbearable pain. I know we will find out soon enough and it is probably intrusive but it looked more like a meniscus tear. If this is the case, does he come back this year? I know in Bball this injury take take a few weeks to recovery from depending on weather surgery is involved.

    • Nobody knows yet. Riley said he won’t disclose it until tomorrow. To me it looked like a MCL or meniscus, but that’s semantics really–bottom line is that his cleat was planted and his knee twisted, so it’s likely a torn *something*.

I don’t think the recovery time would allow a return this year…maybe if it’s a January bowl game and he recovers quickly, but I doubt it. Since he is likely eligible for the medical hardship waiver (see post above) it wouldn’t make sense to bring him back this year unless the Beavers were in the Rose Bowl and needed him.

  26. Sorry to pile on the Hardin sucks train, but good lord, I just got a DVR and was watching some plays and he truly acts like he does not know what he is doing out there. I mean, you have to get something from him…at least big hits because of his size, right? Nice to see Riley scream at him on camera. I was listening to the KPAM wrap up show and caught something about benching him, but I think the announcers were just speculating. He is going to cost the team a P-10 game at some point.

  27. I know that we are supposed to be angry beavers here but I’m having a hard time right now being angry. Ladies and gentleman we have us a QB!… in fact we have us an offense. Yeah! Oh Boy!
I was most impressed with how Katz shook off his first pick of the year… he handled it great!
Okay, I know we are to be angry here so here goes… Defense looked better a little but still allowed way to many yards and they were totally gassed at the end. We still got some high powered offenses ahead (esp. OU) so we need to get our defense dialed-in. Most of Quizz’z big yards came when he turned away from going up the middle to the outside… can’t they dial those up on purpose?

    • Yeah there are things I don’t want to be right about. That’s one of them. I’m just glad the last second heartbreak didn’t ring true.

  28. Ok, maybe too rosy for this blog but here it goes.

Assume James R is out for season with torn ?. And then also assume that he is eligible to return next year under Medical hardship. And then assume the Beavs continue to play well, and make Rosebowl.

Then under those assumptions, James Rodgers returns next year for brother Jaquizz’s senior year. Katz, defense and receivers will have returning experience. And with a softer schedule do Beavs make National Champ run in 2011? Orange colored glasses my friends. But Beavs and Ducks essentially tied for first in Pac10 now.

  29. Beavers played well still have areas to improve.

Kahut is just an awful kicker he seems to have lost nearly all his confidence that last XP was atrocious. I feel like against Stanford or Oregon his issues might cost the Beavers the game which would be a shame.

Defense needs to tackle better in space. Guys aren’t playing under control and are allowing big games when they should be short gains. I think that should get better though in the next few games.

Like many of you said the officiating is an embarrassment. How many calls can Pac 10 crews screw up. It always seems like especially in big games that Beavers cannot buy a call. I saw a couple false starts by UA that weren’t called. I just can’t understand how they miss those. Also, I am sick and tired of opposing players being allowed to take cheap shots at the Beaver players and getting absolutely no punishment for it. How many players have to get hurt before something is done. In the coming weeks I wouldn’t be surprised if guys start taking cheap shots on Katz. Of course they won’t be penalties. I’m quite sure it’s a torn ACL for James which sucks but I hope he is back next season he will be missed this season. That should have been without a doubt a personal foul for that in the end zone. He was already in and he gets dragged down which wasn’t necessary at all and the officials do nothing about it. Quizz week after gets thrown to the ground well after the whistle and week after week nothing is called. There is no excuse for that and I’m tired of the same incompetent officiating week after week.

However, Ryan Katz was brilliant he showed a lot of his potential. I like how he kept plays alive with his legs and if nothing was there would take off and get big first downs. That dimension has never been there under Riley and it is nice to see. Just watching Ryan Katz now I’m excited what he will be like at the end of the year and next season.

I must say I see this team being at least 8-2 when they head to Palo Alto to play the Cardinal and have an excellent shot to win that game. It’s now time for the Beavers to feast on the weak portion of the conference. I like that the Beavers get their 2 toughest games of the year at the end of the year when they’re playing some fantastic football.

  30. Guys, the idea isn’t for this blog to be negative for the sake of it, so I’m not sure why people are making snarky comments that their comments are “too positive” for the blog. Any comment is allowed, and there was a lot of positive yesterday, but while the end result was great and there were positives, there were a lot of problems within that framework of that win, which means there’s a lot of improvement to still be had and a lot to talk about. Such as:

    1. Hardin
    2. Pankey
    3. The 550 yards given up by the defense is another.
    4. The officiating
    5. Justin Kahut is another (though, everyone is allowed one bad game per year).

You can talk about positives as well, and obviously I agree that Katz was great and the win overall is great.

    • As we say here in LA, “we just playin angry… shooooot.” The “too positive” stuff is just havin fun.
With that said I do absolutely agree that the Pac-10 officiating sucks… I was right there in the LA coliseum last year and watched the official watch that dirty Trojan rip Quizz’z helmet off… no call. But that end-zone tackle last night wasn’t as blatant as other things we have seen let go over the last couple years.
I think the Beavers have had a bias from officials for years because of the thugs we had playing some years back who were 18th street gang style… homeboy.

  31. The way I see it James has played less than 3 games. He had NO CHOICE in playing more than a half of both the BSU and UA games because of dirty cheap shots. The concussion was so hard he couldn’t play the following week and then a total B.S late tackle 5 yards into the endzone. So I am strongly optimistic that he would either qualify for the medical hardship year immediately or be granted it through petition because he and the team had NO CHOICE in playing him more than 2 full games and less than 2 halfs so far. It wasn’t even possible so I think the Beavs will get the medical hardship year.

  32. Although he didn’t have a big game yesterday, the one other name for the receiving corps is Aaron Nichols. He had a big game v. ASU. I think he’s a better receiver than Bishop, but all 3 have the ability to show up big this season – Wheaton, Nichols, Bishop.

The other guy who made one catch yesterday is Geno Munoz, don’t know much about him, not sure if he’s a legit backup or not?

But…with JR going down, the comment was made, the depth chart is going to be challenged from here on out. Any further injuries could be devastating to the pass game.

  33. I just realized something…We’ll be wearing our Pro-Combat Uni’s in the Civil War…The uni’s are in remembrance of the Giant Killers. What if Oregon is undefeated and ranked #1 at the time of the Civil War? That game would be the biggest hyped game in the history of the OSU football program….The next step is beating the Bad..the huskies. GO BEAVS!!!

  34. Anybody watch the LBs closely yesterday? I saw Pankey miss a few big ones, but other than that who played and how did we look? Robinson, Wilson, Collins, Doctor, Roberson, Unga(s)?

  35. I was hoping they would wear the black pants and they did. We should be wearing them on the road for ATLEAST 50% of the games. Fans like the look more. Erickson’s teams wore black pants all the time (with the very rare burnt orange pants just once or twice..which were not bad) and I think the players get comfortable with that regardless of where they are playing. Probably even slightly helps the quarterback’s eye and throwing with as much confidence as possible. I think we should wear black pants again for the Huskies. Lets just not do black pants on the road just once this year. I would rather see that be more the norm and the all white just used 2 to 3 times a year max. Preferably all white maybe just twice..for Cal and one other. I would not be opposed to having an orange pant/black stripe option for a special occasion (once a year) either.

  36. The Black pants better market a tougher look for our image and brand. I think using all white just twice is smarter and will help maximize our Oregon State brand nationally. The white tops w/orange and then the black pants and helmets just really pops and looks great on TV. Just feels more “Steeler-tough” and will help solidify our brand if we use it more. Most Beavers I know really like the look.

  37. @OrangeColoredGlasses: Great minds think alike (or at least you and I do…)

I had exactly the same discussion last night with some friends, after watching the Beavs beat the Wildcats.

Sure, there are lots of “ifs”. But IF James Rodgers returns next season (assuming JRod takes a medical redshirt for the rest of this year), and IF the rest of the key Beavs stay healthy between now and then, and if the younger Beavers keep progressing (Markus Wheaton in particular) then the Beavs might well have the top offense in the nation next year (assuming also that Ryan Katz keeps progressing as he has been….).

The Beavs should also continue to have excellent special teams (esp. punt and kick return teams). We will lose Kahut, but not sure how big a loss that will be after yesterday’s fiasco (Two missed PATs? Really?).

As for the defense, after this season we will be losing Paea and Olander at defensive tackle, and also Gabe Miller at end, along with Dockery at CB. Those guys won’t be easy to replace (esp. Paea and Dockery). But we do get a lot of players back next season, many of whom have talent. So defense will continue to be the weak link for the Beavs next year. But our offense and special teams will be so good that it should take some stress off our D, and let us slip by some elite teams by (barely) outscoring them.

IF all of this comes to pass — and with an easier schedule next season — the Beavs could have a genuine shot at a Top 5 ranking. NC title game would of course still be a longshot, but not out of the question, if the Beavs get a few breaks and stay healthy.

Let me hasten to add — I’m not saying that James Rodgers’ injury is a good thing (obviously it is the opposite). But there are scenarios where everything could work out very well for James Rodgers, for the Beavers, and for Beaver fans everywhere. Fingers crossed!
