So:
- Up Heyward's salary to 150k and have him stay where he wanted to be, keep Cleveland Wallace (and perhaps Shelton).
or - Hire this retred who clearly doesn't want to come to Corvallis (i.e. only a 2 year deal, delaying negotiations to shop around the NFL, etc) for 200k.
No further comment.
Where did you hear KH wanted to stay at OSU? And he just wanted more money? Everything I’ve seen and read talked about him moving on, since OSU was all he knew and branching out was a great way to do so.
And post a link, don’t give us BS ‘inside sources’
Thanks!
But Anti, the inside sources have been right on regarding the UofO NCAA investigation. Why don’t you trust them now?
Is this your attempt at a joke?
does it sound like one? i could see how it could be taken that way if the sources haven’t been correct. but usually they’re spot on, so go figure.
I think angry was focused solely on last week.
Yes, it sounded like sarcasm because on Tuesday (as I wrote they would) the NCAA didn’t level sanctions.
The person who said that was reliable and helped with a lot of the Lyles stuff last summer. So…we saw Chip declare for Tampa, Thomas the NFL, etc, and it all made sense. Then out of nowhere, quiet. Chip’s heart is suddenly in Eugene. What I think happened, but cannot confirm, is that the NCAA told Oregon their penalties, and at that point Oregon began “negotiating”…
If anyone can confirm, write me.
Full body of work is what I was getting at. I probably hit a nerve since I can see how the first 2 posts on this topic could be taken as attacks, but that wasn’t where i was going. Last week wasn’t enough to change my opinion of this blog.
Same goes for Riley, I judge the guy on his full body of work too. It started out well, but as time goes by, that body becomes more and more bloated with negatives and I’m afraid it will soon be found floating face down on the Willamette. ( I need to stop watching Breaking Bad )
Sounds like Riley blew his wad on this, or he just saw an opportunity to hire a good ol’ boy. Fuck me.
I’m fine with Perry. I actually think $200k is low-balling the man (not the position, but the man). i wonder if most of the hold-up has been Riley trying to pry the extra cash from the AD’s cold grasp.
Question:
Is it more sly to upgrade salaries first by hiring obviously qualified personnel then filling their positions with up-and-comers when they leave?
-or-
Does it make more sense to butt heads on expanding the positions’ pay rates by insisting to the AD that up-and-comers deserve the new rates?
I’m less fine with it now that I know it’s a 2 year deal. It takes 2 years to establish recruiting ties (KHJ’s first year was spent doing this, second year he barely made inroads). By that point Perry will be 60 and his contract expired. Yes, from a coaching standpoint, he should be fine, but if his heart isn’t in it (and based on all circumstantial evidence, it sounds like Corvallis is not his #1 choice) then even that is marginalized. From a recruiting standpoint, downgrade since it takes a year or two to establish relationships.
And to pay more money for this? Just doesn’t make sense to me. It looks like nepotism and the good ol’ boy network in full swing.
What I’m saying is that our position coaches gain pay rates according to the person, not the value of the position in relation to what other Pac schools are doing. That position was being underpaid with KH in it. And it was unlikely that MR could have expanded the position’s value with an up-and-comer. Bringing in a resumed coach gives MR a serious argument for expanding that value.
If in a couple years Perry does leave, then he leaves a bigger wake than did KH… one which could easily hold an up-and-comer and the higher salary demand that might come with one.
From the outside, it sounds like Perry needs a job and he and Riley are comfortable with each other. I’d be interested in knowing why no NFL teams want him, you would think an outstanding secondary mind would be in high demand given the explosion of the pass in the last few years. I’m so bored and tired of the OSU program that I could really care less about this hire. The defense is still Banker’s responsibility and accountability will come one way or another.
Riley is so foolish – he could’ve upped Heyward’s pay (we don’t know that he didn’t try) to keep Heyward at OSU (we don’t know Heyward would’ve stayed, in fact, evidence is to the contrary) all in order to keep a 3* corner like Wallace. And instead what do we get? An NFL coach with LA ties that can coach the entire secondary (unlike Heyward).
Pick and choose your battles. Riley provides plenty of fodder for complaining, but he comes off alright on this. Heyward chose to leave. If Riley hires an NFL coach to replace Heyward and coach up our secondary, I think there should be at least cautious optimism, if not excitement for such a move. I realize we are in recruiting mode around here still, but when the season starts, we will care more about how our coaches coach than how they recruit. Fact is, you don’t know anything about how Perry coaches except that the dude has been around and has a pretty impressive resume (at least as far as Oregon State defensive back coaches are concerned).
PS. Shelton was gone as soon as ‘SC offered him regardless of Heyward’s departure – stop blaming Riley for that.
Don’t buy the “Heyward wanted to leave” line… wherever that rumor was started. Neither he nor Riley ever said that. The PC/burning no bridges line of “spreading one’s wings” was trotted out yet again for niceties, nothing more.
That being said, once offered the amount he was, KH would have been a fool to stay where he was not as highly valued. And his resume did not fit the scale for the value UW saw in him. I think MR could have fought for enough to retain KH in the end. But 20/20 hindsight says it would have been a wasted effort. Sark would have doubled down with another bump in the end.
I think we got a large upgrade in coaching.
We’ll see how Perry might do for recruiting. How hard can it be to get in a recruits ear with his resume?
“Hi there son. I’ve been to three Super Bowls as a player and a coach. Can we talk?”
I think my question is, will he bother with wanting to recruit. Also, how will he feel coaching in a man defense when he has coached a lot of Tampa 2. Will there be chemistry issues in the staff, will positive change come about? I personally like the cover 2, especially to stop some spread teams but it remains to be seen what this guy can do with college athletes who are not elite at their position.
The best part about this is that the defense needs change and improvement. If KH wasn’t able to step up and tell Banker when the scheme is idiotic, maybe Perry will have the backbone to say what needs to be said to get some D improvement from a coaching perspective.
I’m glad to see something change of what has been a defensive embarrassment. Last year we had better talent than our defensive scheme enabled. Hopefully this is a step towards correcting that deficiency and not another good ol boy chuckling this university to death. The proof will be in the pudding, we’ll see sooner than later.
And I like Jack’s speculation of this hire as clearing the way for a more competive future pay for future assitant coach hires.
The problem with this hire is that he is the age of a recruits Grandpa.
Everyone knows that most of the serious recruiting starts 2-3 years out. Many of the DB coaches, including KH, are already on top of the guys that they want for next year. An old guy coming in for the first time with no ties to OSU who only has a 2 year contract is not very appealing.
ESPN showed the Alabama recruiting office moving the 2012 class off the board and the 2013 going to the main board on LOI day. They already have 8-9 commits, LSU has 5 and Texas has at least 4. I know that we do not go after the same kids as those schools, but the other Pac-`12 schools are doing the same thing. By the time Perry gets any real traction his contract will be up and he will be gone. Those DBs that he was recruiting will have serious thoughts about OSU. Thus we lose another class of DBs.
Some old guys can recruit.
Here’s something interesting. EVERY other assistant coach at OSU is on a 1 year contract. Every one. This is the only one guaranteed to be here for 2 years. I think, if anything, that’s a big plus for a recruit.
The Pac 12 has a TOTAL of 5 verbal commitments for next year, so I don’t see us getting passed by in the next 3-4 days.
Buker writing that Perry was one of three contacted applicants, the only other named one was Joe Baker of tampa bay, third was an “experienced college secondary coach”. Perry and wife are in town looking at houses, and hopes paperwork is done by the weekend. Riley was surprised that Perry was interested, had several “irons in the fire” regarding other NFL positions.

Wish it would have happened earlier than it did. Riley said it happened “very fast”. It might have saved Cleveland, but then again maybe not. He does look to be somebody who can eleviate the play in the secondary, so I am excited about getting better play back there, I do think the talent is there.
Hoping this is a done deal because I like this hire.
He’s a big coaching upgrade over what we had. Heyward may be a decent recruiter and keeping him may have kept Cleveland Wallace (no way Shelton stayed when USC offered) but he wasn’t much of a coach.
Completely unknown as far recruiting goes, but I think many are doing too much hand wringing. Plenty of old guys can recruit. Just about everybody for Oregon is old and they do very well in recruiting. (of course, being able to offer cash money, automobiles and full furnished apartments certainly doesn’t hurt. But still, they close a lot of deals.) Oregon State’s best recruiter ever was Jim Gilstrap. He was in his mid-sixties. I’d love to have another guy like him.
Some recruits want a buddy. Some recruits want a guy who can coach them and make them a better player. There is no single recruiter who will appeal to all recruits.
I’m not completely sold that Heyward was a superstar. Riley wanted someone who could handle the entire secondary and Heyward handled the corners only with a graduate assistant handling the safties, The corner recruitng class was nice bevore it got blown up, but were all of these guys Heywards recruits or did Brennan have a hand here? I just saying- I don’t know the full story. but maybe he wasn ‘t all that. It could be that riley wasn’t sold with his skills. Again don’t know but it could be- we’ll see how he does in Wash.
You guys bring up some valid points.
Regarding Heyward being a superstar: he wasn’t, but he was just beginning to hit his stride in recruiting. First two years he was establishing connections, etc. The past two years, you saw a lot of big names mention him. The DBs seemed to play the ball a lot more the past couple years, too. If OSU had good recruiters I’d take Perry’s coaching experience (though, he was a “special assistant” at his latest gig, and now he is in college, so he seems to be moving backwards). I guess my main point is that OSU is paying 100k more, and I’m not sure what upgrade they’re getting for that money. I don’t see a clear upgrade.
Sounds like the Riley BS brigade is out in full force.
Hahahahaha
Tell a lie (or in this case BS) often enough and after awhile folks will begin to think that it’s the truth.
Hahahaha
I’d rather wait and see what happens but right now my gut tells me offering Heywood $150K would have been a smarter move. Time will tell.
It’s possible that Riley is thinking that Perry can tutor Mitch so that he will be ready to take over in two years if Perry leaves. Also, it would give him a DC if Banker leaves. Can he recruit well enough to increase the type of kids we have coming in currently (10, 11th in the conference) I don’t know and I have reservations, however it is possible that his NFL connections could play well with inner city kids who are looking for that extra help to get them to that next level. He should be a good evaluator of talent, but he will not be used to the talent level we have been getting in. Coaching over recruiting, it will provide a good litmus test when we play UW every year.
