  1. For the record: Dish’s game tracker feature is pure win sauce. Click game tracker, click your sport and all of the games that day come up on the right of your screen. Scroll thru them to check scores or click on one to schedule recording or watch. Nice.

  2. This game has the feel of the WSU game a few years ago when they beat us. SDSU is inspired flying around, Beavs standing around with heir hands on their hips wondering why we are not winning…

  3. I just got home.

-2 yards rushing? I guess it’s safe to assume they didn’t try to have balance. I guess our identity is terrible defense and schoolyard offense.

  4. I am officially on the fire Banker bandwagon. I don’t personally think Riley needs to go, but I’m afraid that is what it’s going to take to get rid of Banker.

  5. If Banker can’t get his head out of his ass and the offense keeps getting false starts we could lose this. If so Banker should be replaced mid week!

  6. Just finished the following letter to OSU that is going out in Monday’s mail:

    To whom it may concern:
I have decided to suspend any further monetary donations in any form to my alma mater Oregon State University until Mark Banker, the defensive coordinator of the OSU football team, is eliminated from the coaching staff. In my opinion, he is the primary reason that the defensive performances of the football team are so dismal. It is truly an embarrassment to watch the defensive performances of this team. I see no other way to voice my displeasure than to pull my financial support for the school. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who would be interested in reading this letter, such as Edward Ray, Bob DeCarolis, Mike Riley, etc.
In addition, I would like for Oregon State to remove me from any call lists so that the students who tirelessly perform the cold calls to the homes of alumni seeking monetary donations do not have to waste their time.
When (or if) Mr. Banker is removed from the Oregon State football staff, I will once again resume donating to Oregon State University.
    Thank you for your time.

  7. If Mannion is getting this kind of pressure from San Diego State what’s it going to be like when the Beavs play top tier defenses? On second thought don’t tell me.

  8. They are rushing balls out almost every down… I’m not and offensive genius, but isn’t there a certain play type that takes advantage of overly aggressive defenses….

  9. This is embarrassing like suddenly appearing naked in public an hour ago. As in, it’s still awkward and uncomfortable, yet you’ve had time to get used to it.

  10. This is just bad football.. I’m glad I haven’t spent much time watching this previous offseason/season. Go Beavs and all, but this is getting ugly

  11. This looks exactly like the WSU game. Other team is playing chippy violent ball, our guys are laying down and taking it. Acting like they don’t care and they just want it to be over. This speaks to piss poor coaching. How the fuck can a ho hum guy like Riley motivate guys to play hard nosed violent football? I’m so fucking done with this team. I’m not spending another cent for anything OSU, until this entire staff is gone.

  12. 2011 2.0. It appears we are truly very bad. Instead of trying to keep our obviously pathetic D off the field by holding the ball by burning clock with some runs, Riley has gone into panic mode and will pass every play to compound the problem.

  13. Well Oregon State fans, let us know when you have had enough. I hope Canzano writes an all out shit storm on Banker and the poor coaching that allow so many dumb false starts. Don’t come home Banker. Please go away!

    • Whew, I though Banker couldn’t stop an offense with a running QB. Relieved to know that he doesn’t discriminate, he can’t dial up a defense to stop ANY offense. Luckily we’ll get exactly NO halftime adjustments.
Oh, Mike, Mike, Mike, SDSU gives up yards on the ground and we run 3 (4?) running plays in the first half. Way to set Mannion up to fail. How about a fucking screen against the fucking blitz!

  14. Mike Riley is a sheepish 2 ball bitch pussy.

20 seconds and two time outs and he downs the ball and mopes into the locker room. Cuz you wouldn’t want to try to score or anything.

  15. Riley at halftime was hilarious! Yeah 11 penalties is terrible, offensive line needs to have composure. Y6 runs in the first half? Yeah that is something we need to work on.

    Hahahahaha your pathetic!

  16. Hopeful halftime adjustments. See what Brown can do. More downfield throws to cooks and mulanney. Not sure anything can be done about the defense. Oline playing terrible.

  17. This is why I chose not to watch anymore….I’m locked up in a cabin (our anniversary), so we don’t have cable….thought I was gonna miss out on a sure win….so I thought I would check the Gamecast, and….MY GOD, WTF!!!!!! This team will set a record for futility at this rate……………..we continue to set the bar even lower!!!! (Deep breath)….K back to being with my sweethear, whispering sweet nothings, and legs up by the fireplace.

  18. Just checking in for the halftime score. The stat sheet shows SDSU with 248 total yards, D on track to give up another 500 yard game. Their first start QB has a rating of 209. We have 7 yards rushing, are you kidding me? And we only have 4 attempted runs? (I’m assuming Mannion’s 2 were sacks or scrambles).

A buddy asked if I wanted to use his tickets for next weeks game. Are you kidding me?

  19. I turned it off. At least the dodgers are on instead. Out coached and outclassed by a fucking terrible mountain west conference team 3 weeks after losing to an FCS team again. I’ll tell you this teams identity after 4 games. They suck balls. We had 17 returning starters right? From a 9 win team. Fuck you Riley. And double fuck you banker!

  20. Here is some hard hitting investagative journalism
    ?@LindsayRae19
The Oregon State sideline is dead. No life, no energy … maybe that’s part of what’s wrong with this defense.

  21. Looks to me the players have given up on this coaching staff. I would too if I had to keep trying Banker’s same failing ideas over and over again and kept getting put in bad position by poor coaching.

  22. Keystone Cops… When you see this shit for sooo many years it’s amazing how the Riley Faithful can still think something good’s going to happen… No sense of urgency, energy on the field/sideline, technique…

    • Yep. The offense will be out lollygagging back to the huddle, acting like it’s the first quarter. No hustle. No intensity. No killer in instinct. Just like their wussy ass bitch of a coach.

  23. The D scheme is too complicated for the lower skill players to figure out. When you add poor/inability to tackle equals a defensive embarrassment. I’ve been chirping about this for years now.

  24. I’ve just had it. Can’t watch this anymore – the stupid penalties in the first half, the fumbles in the second half, the defense not stopping the run, the Beavers making no effort whatsoever to run the football, and just the all around disaster of a game that this has been… at least this game isn’t in conference so we’re still set to win the Rose Bowl behind the defensive genius that is Mark Banker!

  25. I officially just give up on this team. I feel bad for the players being led by such an epically mediocre coaching staff.

Everyone always comments about how Biley is such a nice guy. Well nice guys finish last in this sport.

I hope the Ucks actually do score triple digits on us. Maybe thats what it takes to shame a few more pollyannas to actually show some outrage at this piss poor program.

  26. Throwing on like 2nd down, up 2, on your own 20, is absolutely stupid. Wow. I’m just baffled.

We may lose the next like 7 straight games, but tonight, we may actually win!

  27. KELL! FUCK YOU!!!

He had a horrible play last week, and he does again this week, roughing the passer on 3rd and long. Just amazing.

I hate this defense so much.

  28. AND ANOTHER PICK!!!

Just wow, nobody wants to win this.

I feel so bad for this QB; young, and I think they said a walk on, and completely choked this game away. Rough game.

  29. wow. I can hear it now.

Mark Banker’s Defense wins the game! Hail the hero!

    /facepalm
    /angryface

it does feel alot better to win than to lose. But Im afraid this is actually bad for our program in the long term.

      • Bullshit.

Read the puffers tomorrow, they’ll be babbling on about how the defense came through at the end, when it was their shit play that put their team behind in the first place.

        Apologist dickhole.

        • I concur. They’ll completely ignore most of the first 3-1/2 where we played uninspired and looked like absolute shit against a winless mountain west conference trash opponent. But, great win guys. Seriously that was a team that FCS Eastern Illinois ass raped by 3 touchdowns in the same building.

      • This is pretty close, from espn chat:

        Paul Salmonson
My beavs were so close to the jaws of defeat (from an average at best MWC team). But give coach Riley and his stuff 110% credit for making great adjustments going into the 4th qtr.

P.S. SDSU here is a free tip. Don’t play 3 quarters (might be able to get away w/ it during MWC play) of football you will lose just like tonight.

        P.S.S. GO beavs!

  30. Game over. That is how you are winless. Don’t know what to say. I am amazed they came back and won, but still have a bad taste in my mouth.

    • Already did. I pounded it as badly as our defense. And the great beaver was none too happy with my performance. Guess I need to consult banker and go back to the lab and work on fixing my little mistakes. Aw shit! Don’t think I can fix that little mistake. Damn you! Thanks Dad!!!!!

    • I wouldn’t say that SDSU deserved to win. They only had 82 yards total offense in the second half and could only manage to put up 6 points, 2 FG after the Beavs turned the ball over on 2 fumbles. And their inexperienced QB throws a pick six to put the Beavs on top.

      • I think the thing to say is….we deserved to lose. We should have blown out that team, and only win on a pick 6. This is the EASY PART OF THE SCHEDULE….!!

  31. Bob De Carolis ?@bvrboss
Once again, WOW! These guys never give up! @OSUBeaversFB #GoBeavs

three more wins to another year extension, lol

  32. NINE hip hip’s…………..you can’t make this stuff up.
OK, the players learned to stay in it till the end, but, NINE…………hard to believe!

    • and its more than just Zimmerman. Skotte should not be out there either. It’s like playing 8 or nine vs 11 when those 2 are on the field.

    • Surprisingly he lead the team in tackles with 13. Now I saw several miss plays, but over a dozen tackles is big. I would have to rewatch the game to focus on his play, but there is no way I am watching anything but the good highlights.

    • Zimmerman made a couple mistakes. But I don’t think he’s as bad as everyone thinks. His job is to cover the deep side. The defender covering underneath is responsible when the WR turns under the S for an easy catch. On that cross to Lockett, Martin didn’t redirect him on the cut and took a really bad angle in pursuit. TZ was over him and had the angle to the side. Martin took an angle three yards behind TZ in the same direction instead of following the guy who just beat him underneath. What was he going to to? Was he going to wander toward the sideline on the angle TZ had covered and come in after the tackle to touch Lockett and get an assist? His not being there for the cut-back cost us a TD.

Btw… on the overhead view of that play they showed for the replay Alexander was coming from 30 yards behind the play and closing fast. He was still 15 yards behind Lockett when he scored. But he made up 10 yards while Lockett was pulling away from our DBs. Dude is really fast.

Martin was also the cover beaten on the other long passing TD. He was just flat out-run and lost two steps in 20 yards.

  33. Looks like we have an angrybeav on the team:
“Ryan Murphy, a Beavers defensive back, was scowling as if someone had stolen his BMX bicycle. I told him to smile, he’d just won. He said, “We beat ourselves up. We gave up an 80-yard TD. We couldn’t tackle.” Yeah, but you won. “Yeah, OK. We won.” “

  34. BYU holding Utah to 20 late in the 4th quarter.

You know, like any team with a defense should.

Still losing, but their offense sucks. So I guess there’s that.

  35. Meh, the Beavs get a rare comeback win against a team they were suppose to bury. I’m just glad I decided not to invest any emotional capital in this team. Would I be happy that they lost? No, but how could anybody be happy about the win, relieved is a better description. Even though the defense upped their game in the 2nd half when taken as a whole it just is one more performance that should lead to Banker’s firing.

  36. Joe Avezzano cautioned against unearned hubris going into this game and it’s clear that was the right call.

Joe supposes that those who are bitching the most and kicking rocks all the way home are those who expected an easy win. That must suck. For you.

Having not assumed a win and being able to watch an exciting and unexpected last few minutes of the game, Joe was quite happy as was the team. If you had stopped watching or listening to the game in disgust, you missed out. Bummer.

Joe is not saying it was a good win or that there are not massive issues that need to be addressed. But if you can’t enjoy a win, especially if defeat seemed imminent, Joe wonders if you really are a Beaver fan.

But then again, Joe has never promoted himself as some kind of half-assed college football handicapper or master strategist. Just a fan like you. Well, some of you.

Now, bring on the pollyanna blah blah…Joe is sure it will be fresh and interesting.

    • Joe was never a college football fan, let alone a Beav. He took his paycheck and had to argue that it wasn’t theft.

A fan of football should hate this game. It was about as poorly played a game as there ever was, save for a couple players on each offense. A fan of “close games” and “exciting finishes” can’t even claim this game was good. It came down to who could make the worst mistake.

I feel like I just out-muscled a five year-old girl in order to win a cake walk.

      Joe:
Joe pontificates that anyone who thinks shoving a preschooler out of the way was never a fan of cake.

      • Well, that hurts. In Joe’s defense, those cheerleaders weren’t just going to mack on themselves.

Jack, your last sentence about the preschooler almost makes sense but appears to be missing some words. Joe suggests you revise and resubmit.

        • Joe wishes to reply to his own email like the cool kids do simply to say that if a sloppy game is played and one feels a little sheepish about it appearing in the W column, it’s better than a loss. There are those on this blog who seem to be dissatisfied with anything other than a decisive “expected” win with all the stats lined up nicely to support that outcome. Ain’t gonna happen very often, so Joe concludes being pissed is a condition some people prefer.

As the execrable Al Davis was fond of saying, “Scoreboard, baby!”

SDSU would have been thrilled with a crappy win, to think the Beavs cannot enjoy same a little bit would be a shame.

If you didn’t jump out of your chair on the pick six at the end, you are not a Beaver fan. Pertinent to those who had stopped watching or listening to the game prior, Joe considers his case rested.

  37. And put Mageo in with the first team. That boy likes to stick his nose where it belongs.

Saw a lot of youngsters out there tonight. So I can’t rag on the staff for doing what they normally do in playing weaker players or holding on to redshirts for dear life. That was a nice change. Players actually got on the field and played.

  38. One might be glad that we won……if this were the tough part of the schedule. But its the EASY part……and we barely scrape out a win.

    HORRIBLE…HORRIBLE….HORRIBLE….

No defense, no run game.. ten penalties by halftime. a team that clearly has norrible coaching…

I dont want to think about what a good team will do to us…..maybe we can be notable this season as the first team ever to give up a hundred points….?

  39. Thought on Rodents vs Mountain West…..
Morning: Watched in person a B1G team soundly defeat SJSt by:
Physically dominating them with a running game that became more effective as the game
wore on. With the back up QB.
Not beating themselves by having stupid penalties.
    Not turning the ball over.
Giving up a few big plays, but in general preventing sustained drives and making them one
    dimensional on offense.
Evening: Watch a PAC 12 team steal a game they should have lost because of:
Unbelievable amount of stupid, lack of concentration penalties
    Poor effort with tackling
    One dimensional offense……no run game
Apparently leaving 9/10’s of the play book in Corvallis

Cavanough has to be held accountable for all the dumb ass penalties and the lack production running the ball. I think he gets a pass because he is the one coach who drops f bombs among all the Opie Taylor types. Cussing does not equal good coaching.
Play calling was questionable. Selling out on the pass rush and no screens or draws?
Giving up an opening series score = not ready to play.
Harlow looked good as did Mr. Magoo or whatever his name is.

    • I think the O-line eventually got it sorted out by the second half, evidenced by the drop off in the penalties. I’ll give them a pass with all the adjustments and shuffling they had to do. I’m expecting significant improvement when the injured guys get back in action, and my guess is the run game should improve.

      • Three of our five false starts were because the defense jumped into the neutral zone, and our guys reacted. I thought for sure it was going to be four out of six until they finally called the last one correctly. Clute’s was a legit call, and “everyone except #50” was really Mitchell’s fault for missing the count.

SDSU was also incorrectly called for a false start late in the game when one of our guys jumped off-side. I think it killed their offensive rhythm as much as it did ours with all the bad calls.

    • Totally agree on Cavanaugh; people get distracted by his gruff nature, foul language, and bear crawls and think that make him a great coach. 8/10 his lines act like they don’t want to run block, they clearly prefer pass blocking.

I think players stop listening during the constant yelling, cursing. OSU needs an upgrade there at O line coach.

  40. Mannion leading the nation in pass yards. 2nd place is nearly 300 yards back. not having a bye week yet helps, but still impressive when his conpletion % is top 10. cooks still leading receiver and still has most rec td’s despite zero yesterday. still tied for 6th in total scoring. Nelson tied for 1st ib INT’s.

  41. Colorado is next and they’ve had 2 weeks off. Theyre also undefeated. The bye week helped SDSU come out ready yesterday. Beavs better be ready for Colorado’s best.

  42. The hallmark of a championship team is playing like #$%#%& and still pulling out the win — OK it’s a joke…..LOL

It looks to me as if our best players on D are trying too hard….Nelson, Murphy, and Reynolds can’t trust their teammates to back them up…..I don’t blame them…..Zimmerman, Johnson, and Kell not pulling their weight, or worse yet….playing like they want to lose (dumb penalties, missed tackles) — if anything, it would be better to leave them off the field….at least the rest of the team would know what they are up against (8 vs. 11 is not a bad idea).

  43. Would you feel any different about this team if they had stopped EWU’s final drive and won the game?

I wouldnt maybe because it is fresh but this defense is worse than either 2010 or 2011. I thought they had fixed secondaty issues last year and Perry was a god send but i was wrong. It was nice to see scott get time vs martin.

  44. Beaver Byte Top 25

    1. Oregon
    2. Stanford
    3. Alabama
    4. Ohio St.
    5. UCLA
    6. Clemson
    7. Louisville
    8. LSU
    9. Florida St.
    10. Washington
    11. Miami
    12. Oklahoma St.
    13. Texas A&M
    14. Georgia
    15. South Carolina
    16. Oklahoma
    17. Arizona
    18. Baylor
    19. Ole Miss
    20. Florida
    21. Northwestern
    22. Michigan
    23. Wisconsin
    24. Texas Tech
    25. Fresno St.

  45. The Sports Illustrated Fansided Top 25 will likely be out tonight around 8pm or so. Can be seen at saturdayblitz.com . Oregon may pass Alabama. They were only 4 votes behind last week. The Pac-12 has been getting good national recognition as the clear 2nd best conference and we are playing statistically as good as the SEC or better. Always important for the Pac-12 to get two BCS teams in every year for the conference coffers.

  46. In going over the previous discussion about winning or losing at half or at the end of the 3rd, this is the first time since 2007 (Cal: losing 14-13 at half, winning 20-14 end of 3, Riley screws up and loses the game) that we’ve come back from a halftime deficit to win. It’s also the first time since 2007 (CW: 21-21 at half, losing 28-21 at end of 3, winning in OT) that we’ve won after losing at the end of 3.

So if we’re keeping score for OC records:
Langsdorf is now 2-26 with a halftime deficit and 3-27 when losing after 3.
Chryst was 6-16 and 4-17 respectively.

    • 91… Wheaton last year and James in 2009. Previously it was Hass in 2005 with 90 catches and a single season record of 1532 yards (2005 was only 11 games).
      Cooks has 43 catches.

Career catches is Wheaton with 227.
      Cooks has 141.

Season and career yards are Hass with the aforementioned 1532 and 3924.
Cooks is at 639 and 2181 respectively.

TDs in a season is 12 by Newson in 2002.
      Cooks has 7.

Career TDs is 20 by Hass and Newson.
      Cooks has 15.

      QB/WR TD hook-ups for a career is Wilhelm/Thomas with 17. Then there’s DA/Newson with 15 and a two-way tie for third at 14 with DA/Hass and Mannion/Cooks.

      He might break some records.

      • Unless they get some semblance of a run game going, the only thing that for sure will that be broken is a body part on Mannion. Neck, knee, femur, etc. He took a lot of shots last night and was starting to throw off his back foot as the game wore on. He starts to get gun shy like last year and we are beyond screwed.

        • 155 is it… Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green, 2009. One needs to average 12.0 catches per game over 13 games to beat it.

Most yards is 2050 by Trevor Inslee, Nevada, 1999. 158 yards per in 13 games is necessary. Cooks is at 159.8 now.

Most consecutive games with a catch is 54 by Bryan Anderson of Central Michigan. Cooks can tie this if we play in the Pac championship game this year and next year… and then beat it if we play in the BCS playoff and go to the BCS CG.

  47. Watching Men’s Soccer live vs. San Jose St. Field looks awesome. Bright orange banners all around. Got the orange right unlike at Reser where it is too light. MAJOR upgrade!

  48. Anyone have a stream for the Falcons VS Dolphins game? It is not on in my area apparently. Fox would rather show reruns of shitty TV shows than broadcast a game…

  49. OH, GREAT BEAVER IN THE SKY!!!

I humbly pray to ya….on my knees…..rending my orange sweatshirt ….tossing ashes on my head….

Please let all this poor defense, poor O-line play, poor run game, and maybe poor play calling….BE JUST A SMOKESCREEN…..cleverly designed to lure the likes of Stanford, Oregon, Washington, etal….into a false sense of CONFIDENCE! Where we suddenly show our A game, and BURY THEM….. Oh….Let it BE!

  50. I was in the mountains most of weekend and missed all communication and news from Beaver/Brewer son at game. Score was about what I thought it would be, but the script was unusual. Still, a win is a win, and if Jack’s report of using a bunch of young guys is true, then this is a good sign. Make the players earn time and you will see things improve. Interesting side note on Cal. If you read the bio’s of their defensive coaches, they have almost no experience coaching defense. Their defense is on par with Beavers but Reynolds, Nelson and Murphy are much better than their guys.

  51. After conf call, Lindsay tweets: Justin Addie likely to practice Monday, AND Rommel Mageo likely the starting MLB from here on out. Sounds good to me!

    • Just re-watched the game after getting back from SD and I agree Mageo looked good out there. He flies around..not always in position but he has a nice burst and plays with passion.

Now if we can just get Nelson to “overtake” Martin

      • Nelson has made some great plays for us but his pass coverage is mediocre and his tackling has been fairly awful. His strength is definitely making plays on the ball. I think he’s got a lot of upside but I don’t see him as an obvious improvement over Martin at this point in time.

The weak link in the secondary and on the defense is Zimmerman and its not close…

    • I think he should maybe be called “Hotdog.” He likes to play the ball, but the rest of the details seem to be of less interest to him.

I didn’t watch the game, how did Larry Scott do? He was supposed to have had a good fall camp and supposed to have some speed.

I was hoping for less Martin, more Scott and Dashon Hunt.

      • Martin may be out with a shoulder injury for a while. Less him and more Scott or any other homo sapien would be a much better option. Gets beat every game. Nelson and RR at corner and Scott, Noland Lewis for Nickel? Hunt isn’t RS so throw him in there, too.

  52. Beavs are 10.5 pt favorites this week in Vegas. Sound familiar?

Cal is 36.5 pt dogs to UO. I know Cal defense is bad, but wouldnt you expect them to put some points on the board? didnt they score 30 something vs tOSU? Does Oregon keep on the pedal till theyre up 40?

  53. Rushing stats: 121st in the nation. I believe that is last. We’re number 1…… sort of.
    55 yards per game!
Good news is the scoring defense is now up to 108th.

  54. The negatives have been covered en masse, but I think there were a few positive takeaways on defense for us in this one.

-6 points allowed in the second half. We normally get killed in the second half by the other team’s adjustments on both sides of the ball, but that wasn’t the case this time.

-Actual penetration from the defensive line!

-No one can deny that Muema is a quality back. You could see that on a few of the runs where he had some room to move. We held him to under 3 ypc and held the whole SDSU team to around 3.5 on the day, not including sacks.

    • another big positive is that meritocracy is taking the place of seniority; first Boom hits the pine
and now Skotte. If could only have someone take Martin’s place the D could begin to get competitive the last 2/3’s of the season.

  55. Beavs: #120 in penalties with a total of 34. Not the aggressive, stupid penalties of the DE era, just stupid penalties. Lots of Remmer’s penalties.
Surprisingly, Cats and Devs among the least penalized.

        • I think one thing Graham really deserves credit for (and has gotten quite a bit from Miller and Gemmell) is that he whipped ASU into shape. Under Erickson (like that OSU team you mentioned) they were one of the most undisciplined teams in the country on and off the field. It took 1 offseason for Graham to completely switch the culture. I though he was a total tool when ASU hired him, but have kind of softened my stance as he seems to care about discipline and class work more then many of his coaching peers do.

    • At least someone finally explains what they mean by “less” when they make dumb statements like this. Sure, he parrots the same tired “woe is recruiting” and “there are no other good coaches in college football” canards heard year after year… after year.

But he actually says our players suck, and we’re lucky to be 50/50 in games against other teams whose players and coaches also suck.

      That’s nice.

      Players suck=coaches are awesome=give them a raise

I’m actually not against Riley getting a raise on a holistic plane. I didn’t see it in the article because I just stopped reading what was a typical Duckfan blog blathering on about nothing on point. But Riley is not the worst coach in the Pac, and OSU is not the worst program in the Pac. Neither are either the best. History says they’re both slightly better than average under Riley (7-5 annually with a 5-4 conference record). And slightly better than average deserves slightly better than average pay. That’s not what Riley gets.

If we were to pay Riley slightly better than the Pac 12 average, then it would be fair. So in that regard, we’re getting more than we pay for.

  56. Eggers: Mannion currently on historic passing tear:

“From Erik Wilhelm to Jonathan Smith to Derek Anderson to Matt Moore to Sean Canfield, nobody has played four straight games as well at quarterback as Mannion in guiding Oregon State to a 3-1 start.

The 6-5, 220-pound junior has completed 71.5 percent of his passes for 1,604 yards — an average of 401 per game — while throwing for 15 touchdowns with one interception. He has become the first QB in OSU history to top 350 yards passing in four successive games.”

He excludes Terry Baker because of difference in eras.

    • I was talking with a couple of friends about this. He’s starting to look (albeit against some not so great defenses) like the top pro-style QB in the country. If he keeps it up, a jump to the league at the end of the season would be a must do. The way they’ve been playing it looks like we’ll need Mannion all 4 quarters of every game, but it would be a good idea to get Vanderveen some reps instead of Vaz as we may need a new starter next year. Obviously Vaz has earned the time and do to loyalty Riley will give it to him if the situation arises, but it would be better for the future of the program to get another guy some seasoning.

      • His arm looks stronger this year and he’s making better decisions to get rid of the ball, even under pressure. Since Day 1, he’s been one of the most composed QB’s I’ve ever seen. His pocket presence is outstanding.

The only flaw I’m seeing right now is his accuracy. He’s missed on a few swings and screens this year, and there are certain throws where he doesn’t set up his receiver to run after the catch, usually because it’s thrown slightly behind.

If Anderson, Canfield and Moore can hang around in the league as long as they have, there’s no reason Mannion can’t do the same.

        • Agree that accuracy could always be better, but the guy is also #10 in completion % nationally, and everybody in the building knows he’s going to throw it. That will change for the worse when we face a good pass rush unfortunately.

          • The completion % and yards will go down if he’s having to make the dump off throw more often, but when pressured, he’s done an incredible job of avoiding situations where there’s even a remote possibility of throwing a pick. Definitely a big improvement over last year.

        • I don’t think it’s that his arm looks stronger. I think it’s that he takes a bunch off most of his throws except for those NFL throws he needs every now and then. He’ll toss a short dart over the middle, a lo to the flats, drop it in the bucket or ease it down the seam to a big TE. And then he’ll throw a deep out across the field that looks like it’s about to burst into flames.

He’s gone from a one speed arm with pedal brakes to a ten speed arm with handbrakes.

          • Agree that his touch has been better, but I remember the last few years thinking his arm wasn’t nearly as strong as it should be for as big as he is. It was actually a pretty common refrain on here.

      • Much lower completion % at 62.6 and he had Steven Jackson in the backfield. That played a role. Mannion has no running game and faces defenses blitzing him to death because of no threat of run and still is making all the big throws. He’s been incredible.

      • 11 TDs and no picks through three games, then he threw a pick-six, a TD, a pick, two TDs and another pick-six… in game four. Game five was a single pick only. I didn’t look beyond that, but I’m assuming it was like watching the back half of Ryan Katz’s 2010 season… multiplied by three.

  57. The answer is ONSIDE KICK on every kickoff.

    – would cut in half the total yards given up by the D
    – reduces stupid roughing the passer fouls

May not change the game outcome, but wouldn’t help the opponent’s stats.

  58. One player who should get major props is K.Cummings. He has been money this year and seemed like he was making every third down catch last Sat. night. Does not have an extra gear, but gets open and catches everything. Very solid. Angry owes him an apology LOL.

    • Couldn’t agree more about Mr. Third Down. Especially in the 4th, 4-5 big time catches to move the chains. Mannion also had some really nice throws to him, where he showed great anticipation.

      • Naji Patrick deserves a shout-out as well for what was likely a game-saving hustle play early in the third quarter. I know that drive was cut short with the sack and fumble turnover around the 40. But giving them the ball on the one or worse on a muffed punt would have been a dagger in the heart.

  59. I’m a huge fan of Riley’s strategy so far this year. This first 4 games has been one of the greatest smoke screens I’ve seen to start a football seasons. He knew last year, when the team went 6-0 to start the season and ended up ranked in the top 10, Pac 12 opponents came in extra motivated because they wanted to beat a ranked team. It made for a rough 2nd half of the season.

This year, he was smart and let his team lose a meaningless non-con game, and allowed 3 more sub par teams hang with his team in an effort to avoid a top 25 ranking. Now that we’re getting into the rest of the Pac-12 schedule, it would be a miracle to crack the top 25 before the Stanford game, even if they win the next 3. Stanford will be looking ahead to Oregon, thinking they have a gimme vs the Beavs, when BLAMMO! The Beaver defense shows their face for the 1st game this season and punches Stanford in the mouth.

You all saw how Stanford played when they thought ASU was a top 25 team. Well that’s not gonna happen to our Beavs, who won’t even be receiving any votes by week 9.

After that, USC will be a win, followed by ASU. (both wannabe top 25 teams) The only 2 games I’m somewhat concerned with the rest of the way are UW and UO. Beavs may just end up being the Rose Bowl team this year if Oregon goes to the National Championship game. I love it when a plan comes together. Pure genius.

(please don’t share this post with the rest of the league)

  60. Riley was just on Sirius/XM “Coast to Coast” with Chris Childers and Dan Hawkins. Lots of talk about Cooks and Mannion, nothing new there. The only interesting thing he said is the exposure he thinks the program is getting with the pac 12 network and how it helps with recruiting outside the conference footprint. The best part was Childers’ disclosure that he sneaked up to Corvallis unannounced when he was on the national campus tour for S/XM. He stated that he saw all the fancy stuff in Eugene but he actually liked the scene in Corvallis better. Riley being on the show and Childers’ props are good for the program.

  61. I hear a lot about us getting the injury bug, comparing this year to least year, yes we definitely got it. But when you compare with other teams in the conference….Beavs seem a tad bit above average with number of injuries….seems like a number of other teams have about equal amount of players “out for the season”. Ironically the Ducks are the only team looking like close to 100%…..go figure, they are the last team needing to be fully healthy…..where’s Boise State on their schedule when you need them…?

    • A better reference would have been something grown-up, to make you sound like you were beyond middle school. Although, I doubt you’ve ever read any Milne anyway.

Perhaps something like, “I see Queeg is still looking for his strawberry thief,” would have stung a litle more than some cuddly children’s book character? Hell, “So, Ignatius is still leading the Crusade for Moorish Dignity,” would have been a cool slam. Even the rote “tilting at windmills” would have been better than what you scratched out.

But by all means, if you want to be mundane don’t let me stop you.
