For the record: Dish’s game tracker feature is pure win sauce. Click game tracker, click your sport and all of the games that day come up on the right of your screen. Scroll thru them to check scores or click on one to schedule recording or watch. Nice.

First start by the SDSU QB. That worried me, we make first time starters look like all-conference QBs. He starts the game 3-3, a TD and a 308 QB rating.

    Live stats pretty good. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=23173

Just finished the following letter to OSU that is going out in Monday’s mail:

    To whom it may concern:
I have decided to suspend any further monetary donations in any form to my alma mater Oregon State University until Mark Banker, the defensive coordinator of the OSU football team, is eliminated from the coaching staff. In my opinion, he is the primary reason that the defensive performances of the football team are so dismal. It is truly an embarrassment to watch the defensive performances of this team. I see no other way to voice my displeasure than to pull my financial support for the school. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who would be interested in reading this letter, such as Edward Ray, Bob DeCarolis, Mike Riley, etc.
In addition, I would like for Oregon State to remove me from any call lists so that the students who tirelessly perform the cold calls to the homes of alumni seeking monetary donations do not have to waste their time.
When (or if) Mr. Banker is removed from the Oregon State football staff, I will once again resume donating to Oregon State University.
    Thank you for your time.

This team will set a record for futility at this rate……………..we continue to set the bar even lower!!!! (Deep breath)….K back to being with my sweethear, whispering sweet nothings, and legs up by the fireplace.

Just checking in for the halftime score. The stat sheet shows SDSU with 248 total yards, D on track to give up another 500 yard game. Their first start QB has a rating of 209. We have 7 yards rushing, are you kidding me? And we only have 4 attempted runs? (I’m assuming Mannion’s 2 were sacks or scrambles).

A buddy asked if I wanted to use his tickets for next weeks game. Are you kidding me?

Zimmerman made a couple mistakes. But I don’t think he’s as bad as everyone thinks. His job is to cover the deep side. The defender covering underneath is responsible when the WR turns under the S for an easy catch. On that cross to Lockett, Martin didn’t redirect him on the cut and took a really bad angle in pursuit. TZ was over him and had the angle to the side. Martin took an angle three yards behind TZ in the same direction instead of following the guy who just beat him underneath. What was he going to to? Was he going to wander toward the sideline on the angle TZ had covered and come in after the tackle to touch Lockett and get an assist? His not being there for the cut-back cost us a TD.

Btw… on the overhead view of that play they showed for the replay Alexander was coming from 30 yards behind the play and closing fast. He was still 15 yards behind Lockett when he scored. But he made up 10 yards while Lockett was pulling away from our DBs. Dude is really fast.

Martin was also the cover beaten on the other long passing TD. He was just flat out-run and lost two steps in 20 yards.

Joe Avezzano cautioned against unearned hubris going into this game and it’s clear that was the right call.

Joe supposes that those who are bitching the most and kicking rocks all the way home are those who expected an easy win. That must suck. For you.

Having not assumed a win and being able to watch an exciting and unexpected last few minutes of the game, Joe was quite happy as was the team. If you had stopped watching or listening to the game in disgust, you missed out. Bummer.

Joe is not saying it was a good win or that there are not massive issues that need to be addressed. But if you can’t enjoy a win, especially if defeat seemed imminent, Joe wonders if you really are a Beaver fan.

But then again, Joe has never promoted himself as some kind of half-assed college football handicapper or master strategist. Just a fan like you. Well, some of you.

Now, bring on the pollyanna blah blah…Joe is sure it will be fresh and interesting.

Joe was never a college football fan, let alone a Beav. He took his paycheck and had to argue that it wasn’t theft.

A fan of football should hate this game. It was about as poorly played a game as there ever was, save for a couple players on each offense. A fan of “close games” and “exciting finishes” can’t even claim this game was good. It came down to who could make the worst mistake.

I feel like I just out-muscled a five year-old girl in order to win a cake walk.

      Joe:
Joe pontificates that anyone who thinks shoving a preschooler out of the way was never a fan of cake.

Joe wishes to reply to his own email like the cool kids do simply to say that if a sloppy game is played and one feels a little sheepish about it appearing in the W column, it’s better than a loss. There are those on this blog who seem to be dissatisfied with anything other than a decisive “expected” win with all the stats lined up nicely to support that outcome. Ain’t gonna happen very often, so Joe concludes being pissed is a condition some people prefer.

As the execrable Al Davis was fond of saying, “Scoreboard, baby!”

SDSU would have been thrilled with a crappy win, to think the Beavs cannot enjoy same a little bit would be a shame.

If you didn’t jump out of your chair on the pick six at the end, you are not a Beaver fan. Pertinent to those who had stopped watching or listening to the game prior, Joe considers his case rested.

Thought on Rodents vs Mountain West…..
Morning: Watched in person a B1G team soundly defeat SJSt by:
Physically dominating them with a running game that became more effective as the game
wore on. With the back up QB.
Not beating themselves by having stupid penalties.
    Not turning the ball over.
Giving up a few big plays, but in general preventing sustained drives and making them one
    dimensional on offense.
Evening: Watch a PAC 12 team steal a game they should have lost because of:
Unbelievable amount of stupid, lack of concentration penalties
    Poor effort with tackling
    One dimensional offense……no run game
Apparently leaving 9/10’s of the play book in Corvallis

Cavanough has to be held accountable for all the dumb ass penalties and the lack production running the ball. I think he gets a pass because he is the one coach who drops f bombs among all the Opie Taylor types. Cussing does not equal good coaching.
Play calling was questionable. Selling out on the pass rush and no screens or draws?
Giving up an opening series score = not ready to play.
Harlow looked good as did Mr. Magoo or whatever his name is.

I think the O-line eventually got it sorted out by the second half, evidenced by the drop off in the penalties. I’ll give them a pass with all the adjustments and shuffling they had to do. I’m expecting significant improvement when the injured guys get back in action, and my guess is the run game should improve.

Three of our five false starts were because the defense jumped into the neutral zone, and our guys reacted. I thought for sure it was going to be four out of six until they finally called the last one correctly. Clute’s was a legit call, and “everyone except #50” was really Mitchell’s fault for missing the count.

SDSU was also incorrectly called for a false start late in the game when one of our guys jumped off-side. I think it killed their offensive rhythm as much as it did ours with all the bad calls.

In going over the previous discussion about winning or losing at half or at the end of the 3rd, this is the first time since 2007 (Cal: losing 14-13 at half, winning 20-14 end of 3, Riley screws up and loses the game) that we’ve come back from a halftime deficit to win. It’s also the first time since 2007 (CW: 21-21 at half, losing 28-21 at end of 3, winning in OT) that we’ve won after losing at the end of 3.

So if we’re keeping score for OC records:
Langsdorf is now 2-26 with a halftime deficit and 3-27 when losing after 3.
Chryst was 6-16 and 4-17 respectively.

Unless they get some semblance of a run game going, the only thing that for sure will that be broken is a body part on Mannion. Neck, knee, femur, etc. He took a lot of shots last night and was starting to throw off his back foot as the game wore on. He starts to get gun shy like last year and we are beyond screwed.

155 is it… Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green, 2009. One needs to average 12.0 catches per game over 13 games to beat it.

Most yards is 2050 by Trevor Inslee, Nevada, 1999. 158 yards per in 13 games is necessary. Cooks is at 159.8 now.

Most consecutive games with a catch is 54 by Bryan Anderson of Central Michigan. Cooks can tie this if we play in the Pac championship game this year and next year… and then beat it if we play in the BCS playoff and go to the BCS CG.

I was in the mountains most of weekend and missed all communication and news from Beaver/Brewer son at game. Score was about what I thought it would be, but the script was unusual. Still, a win is a win, and if Jack’s report of using a bunch of young guys is true, then this is a good sign. Make the players earn time and you will see things improve. Interesting side note on Cal. If you read the bio’s of their defensive coaches, they have almost no experience coaching defense. Their defense is on par with Beavers but Reynolds, Nelson and Murphy are much better than their guys.

Nelson has made some great plays for us but his pass coverage is mediocre and his tackling has been fairly awful. His strength is definitely making plays on the ball. I think he’s got a lot of upside but I don’t see him as an obvious improvement over Martin at this point in time.

The weak link in the secondary and on the defense is Zimmerman and its not close…

The negatives have been covered en masse, but I think there were a few positive takeaways on defense for us in this one.

-6 points allowed in the second half. We normally get killed in the second half by the other team’s adjustments on both sides of the ball, but that wasn’t the case this time.

-Actual penetration from the defensive line!

-No one can deny that Muema is a quality back. You could see that on a few of the runs where he had some room to move. We held him to under 3 ypc and held the whole SDSU team to around 3.5 on the day, not including sacks.

I think one thing Graham really deserves credit for (and has gotten quite a bit from Miller and Gemmell) is that he whipped ASU into shape. Under Erickson (like that OSU team you mentioned) they were one of the most undisciplined teams in the country on and off the field. It took 1 offseason for Graham to completely switch the culture. I though he was a total tool when ASU hired him, but have kind of softened my stance as he seems to care about discipline and class work more then many of his coaching peers do.

At least someone finally explains what they mean by “less” when they make dumb statements like this. Sure, he parrots the same tired “woe is recruiting” and “there are no other good coaches in college football” canards heard year after year… after year.

But he actually says our players suck, and we’re lucky to be 50/50 in games against other teams whose players and coaches also suck.

      That’s nice.

      Players suck=coaches are awesome=give them a raise

I’m actually not against Riley getting a raise on a holistic plane. I didn’t see it in the article because I just stopped reading what was a typical Duckfan blog blathering on about nothing on point. But Riley is not the worst coach in the Pac, and OSU is not the worst program in the Pac. Neither are either the best. History says they’re both slightly better than average under Riley (7-5 annually with a 5-4 conference record). And slightly better than average deserves slightly better than average pay. That’s not what Riley gets.

If we were to pay Riley slightly better than the Pac 12 average, then it would be fair. So in that regard, we’re getting more than we pay for.

Eggers: Mannion currently on historic passing tear:

“From Erik Wilhelm to Jonathan Smith to Derek Anderson to Matt Moore to Sean Canfield, nobody has played four straight games as well at quarterback as Mannion in guiding Oregon State to a 3-1 start.

The 6-5, 220-pound junior has completed 71.5 percent of his passes for 1,604 yards — an average of 401 per game — while throwing for 15 touchdowns with one interception. He has become the first QB in OSU history to top 350 yards passing in four successive games.”

If he keeps it up, a jump to the league at the end of the season would be a must do. The way they’ve been playing it looks like we’ll need Mannion all 4 quarters of every game, but it would be a good idea to get Vanderveen some reps instead of Vaz as we may need a new starter next year. Obviously Vaz has earned the time and do to loyalty Riley will give it to him if the situation arises, but it would be better for the future of the program to get another guy some seasoning.

His arm looks stronger this year and he’s making better decisions to get rid of the ball, even under pressure. Since Day 1, he’s been one of the most composed QB’s I’ve ever seen. His pocket presence is outstanding.

The only flaw I’m seeing right now is his accuracy. He’s missed on a few swings and screens this year, and there are certain throws where he doesn’t set up his receiver to run after the catch, usually because it’s thrown slightly behind.

If Anderson, Canfield and Moore can hang around in the league as long as they have, there’s no reason Mannion can’t do the same.

The completion % and yards will go down if he’s having to make the dump off throw more often, but when pressured, he’s done an incredible job of avoiding situations where there’s even a remote possibility of throwing a pick. Definitely a big improvement over last year.

I don’t think it’s that his arm looks stronger. I think it’s that he takes a bunch off most of his throws except for those NFL throws he needs every now and then. He’ll toss a short dart over the middle, a lo to the flats, drop it in the bucket or ease it down the seam to a big TE. And then he’ll throw a deep out across the field that looks like it’s about to burst into flames.

He’s gone from a one speed arm with pedal brakes to a ten speed arm with handbrakes.

I’m a huge fan of Riley’s strategy so far this year. This first 4 games has been one of the greatest smoke screens I’ve seen to start a football seasons. He knew last year, when the team went 6-0 to start the season and ended up ranked in the top 10, Pac 12 opponents came in extra motivated because they wanted to beat a ranked team. It made for a rough 2nd half of the season.

This year, he was smart and let his team lose a meaningless non-con game, and allowed 3 more sub par teams hang with his team in an effort to avoid a top 25 ranking. Now that we’re getting into the rest of the Pac-12 schedule, it would be a miracle to crack the top 25 before the Stanford game, even if they win the next 3. Stanford will be looking ahead to Oregon, thinking they have a gimme vs the Beavs, when BLAMMO! The Beaver defense shows their face for the 1st game this season and punches Stanford in the mouth.

You all saw how Stanford played when they thought ASU was a top 25 team. Well that’s not gonna happen to our Beavs, who won’t even be receiving any votes by week 9.

After that, USC will be a win, followed by ASU. (both wannabe top 25 teams) The only 2 games I’m somewhat concerned with the rest of the way are UW and UO. Beavs may just end up being the Rose Bowl team this year if Oregon goes to the National Championship game. I love it when a plan comes together. Pure genius.

Riley was just on Sirius/XM “Coast to Coast” with Chris Childers and Dan Hawkins. Lots of talk about Cooks and Mannion, nothing new there. The only interesting thing he said is the exposure he thinks the program is getting with the pac 12 network and how it helps with recruiting outside the conference footprint. The best part was Childers’ disclosure that he sneaked up to Corvallis unannounced when he was on the national campus tour for S/XM. He stated that he saw all the fancy stuff in Eugene but he actually liked the scene in Corvallis better. Riley being on the show and Childers’ props are good for the program.

It looked to me like his 15 yard penalty on the punt was the result of him trying to stop before he got to the receiver, and he rolled an ankle into him. Was that where he got hurt?

I agree, Linsky is likely to be OK with his snaps and it will not hurt much if he isn’t as quick on coverage. Still, it will be nice to see him get a couple good snaps to begin his career.

Not going to happen, but it’s nice to dream. What if we pulled that strategy out just in time for the CW? If we could develop a run game in the meantime, we could conceivably win that way. Oh brother!

On a beaver blog… the last two subjects have involved a long snapper and happy kitty noises.

I’m assuming “pot” refers to pot/kettle. Could you please expound that? It really makes no sense at all.

I know what yu’re thinking right now FB fan. Yore thinking, “Man! Of all blankety-beep’s posts I have to attack, it was this one. And then I have to go type something that sounds like I’m wiping 8am stoopid-drunk spittle off my TI 99… 4A.”

Our last long snapper had long hair. Hoping the next one is more clean shaven. A little fuzz would be ok.

Maybe we Beavers shouldn’t call the position long snapper? I vote for “special teams center.”

Love it love it love it. Open competition, whoever plays the best gets to start. Thank god Riley hires decent position coaches(unlike his coordinators).

Is anything more important to these players than headphones?

I suggest disallowing headphone use by the D until they play 4 quarters of game….oh but, wait, Riley’s too cool/fun now, what with the practice DJs, slip-n-slides, popsicles, water balloon fights…

I hear a lot about us getting the injury bug, comparing this year to least year, yes we definitely got it. But when you compare with other teams in the conference….Beavs seem a tad bit above average with number of injuries….seems like a number of other teams have about equal amount of players “out for the season”. Ironically the Ducks are the only team looking like close to 100%…..go figure, they are the last team needing to be fully healthy…..where’s Boise State on their schedule when you need them…?

You’re stretching your literary limits there son. Don’t go for the Cummings reference. It’s gonna strain you.

A better reference would have been something grown-up, to make you sound like you were beyond middle school. Although, I doubt you’ve ever read any Milne anyway.

Perhaps something like, “I see Queeg is still looking for his strawberry thief,” would have stung a litle more than some cuddly children’s book character? Hell, “So, Ignatius is still leading the Crusade for Moorish Dignity,” would have been a cool slam. Even the rote “tilting at windmills” would have been better than what you scratched out.

But by all means, if you want to be mundane don’t let me stop you.
