Isn’t the early signing period about here? We can talk about CR’s promising new group of recruits who will probably never come here after CR gets canned, and then go on to other schools and become stars.
Tonight is big for the Fire Bob DeCarolis movement that has been gaining alot of momentum. Lose tonight to another low division squad and I think it will reach critical mass. I know at that point I would hope an official rally to oust BDC would be organized. Nothing is going to get noticeably better until OSU fans demand a new AD. If we get plenty of outcry at the deficiencies of his non-leadership then we have a real shot to get rid of this bum who is sinking OSU Athletics.
I’d be shocked if we lose with Collier back, even though Moreland is out. Collier is too good. Having a second player that can generate his own shot and score outside of our “Offense” is vital.
Actual Pac12 games are another matter; we’re going to get slaughtered.
UP is not lower division. Like OSU they are D1. There is no difference in basketball as exists in football. An arguement could be made that the WCC is not as strong as the WCC but both are D1.
The grass roots campaign to fire both Boob Declueless and coach Rob Knob is gaining traction with every mounting embarrassing loss, maybe going ofor the conference will be the final straw!
Ouch! Lost 1,000 fans from the opener against a local team that should have drawn more interest. The numbers will remain low as everyone knows OSU schedules very easy during non-conference. Struggling to win these games is essentially a guaranteed loss in conference. Bottom line is OSU needs a new AD because BDC has sucked the life out of Beaver Nation. A new man to energize the base and restore hope is needed. 3K in attendance in a major sport should have BDC inches from losing his job by itself.
The Virginia Tech AD is resigning. He realized it isn’t fair to deal with his struggle with Parkinson’s and still try to lead a major university’s athletics at the same time and knew VT deserved whoever can do the most with it to get the opportunity to serve and lead in such an important role.
Congrats Beaver Nation….almost a total orange out at Gill last night! If a few senile die hards hadn’t been there the entire lower bowl would have been brilliant with all the bright orange empty seats. JB
Any insight on the rotations that were being used last night and moving forward? It appears to me that Cooke has already surpassed Barton. Olaf is a liability on defense and needs to hit the boards harder. Also I would like to see more/some LMW.
I’m backtracking big time on Olaf. He is a liability on D, and his value comes as a specialist from the perimeter. We’re always going to be in a zone when he’s on the floor, and I dislike his zone rotations as well. I may be biased because I really dislike the trapping 1-3-1, and he takes the point on that. But his 2-3 wing D is slow to the baseline, and you can’t run an effective 2-3 if you’re giving up one whole side of the floor.
I did like the rotations that brought Gomis and even N’diaye in. Gomis really spaces well on O, and he’s quite strong on the D blocks. And N’diaye is so damn long he gets hands on everything… and he made a lay-up with someone in his face… well… below his face.
I don’t know why we went to a shell O in the second half. We were much longer than UP, and we started our O with five guys outside the arc? Wtf man? Our O looked best when Collier was short corner, Brandt was playing block to elbow, and two perimeter players spaced the arc on that side. We actually looked like a good team in that O. Again, Olaf was playing the swing perimeter in that scenario, but that should be Berto. And Olaf should be the lone wolf roaming the other side looking for an open catch and shoot and crashing the boards. I agree with you that LMW should see the floor more, and that would be where I place him with that scheme. He’s smart and can make and create from outside in. Robbins would be the primary player there because of his length, but I also would like to see a flex option with another big on that side. I’m just amazed that we have all this length and do so little with it.
And yes, Cooke is looking more than solid. I was surprised at how smooth his handle is. But his D was nice. And you could see Barton was a little miffed late in the second half while Cooke was taking his minutes. I think Cooke earned it last night.
I know Berto’s soft in man, but we need to put length on the floor and ground and pound in man D. We have so many bigs (and I’m not counting Olaf) that can rotate and affect the interior D. And we only get better depth when Moreland returns. I’m not sold on Moreland’s O because he has yet to show he can space effectively. But he is a good cleaner on both ends. But with the small sample I’ve seen from Gomis, I like Daniel better. That may change, but I don’t think it will. Gomis just looks like he’s the more disciplined player. And he looks like he’s better athletically as well. He’s just not as long as Moreland is.
Gomis looks solid. Moves very well for a big man. It looks like he’s getting limited minutes since he hasn’t played for so long. I imagine when his minutes go up, Olaf’s come down. Olaf needs another year on the bench.
I was kind of sad, but part of losing a thousand is this game was on a schoolnight/worknight. My son did score a bunch of free Beaver gear in the halftime “Blindfold the 7 year old and let him pick up as much Beaver stuff in 60 seconds as he can” game. That made it worth the drive over to Gill.
My former roommate from my days at OSU emailed this to me today. He used to be a big OSU hoops fan, till Eddie Payne pretty much started the downward spiral. He’s also a PSU Viking fan and followed UofP back when they had Michael Holton coaching. He’s never read Angrybeavs and doesn’t follow the team anymore, so his opinion is pretty unbiased at this point. Just thought I’d share his outsiders’ view of the current state of OSU hoops.
“Watched the game last night. Wow, OSU is really bad. Barely beat Pilots who are picked 9th of 10 teams in WCC. If UofP didn’t have a true freshman point guard who couldn’t get the ball across half court, they would have easily won. Pretty funny, with so few fans at Gill, you could hear Robinson screaming at his players at times. Nelson pretty much beat UofP all by himself. I honestly could see them winning quite a few non conference games and not winning any league games this year.
So bad that it made me look up the last time other Pac12 schools were in the NCAA tournament. The furthest you have to go is about 6 years back for any other school’s last appearance. OSU’s last was in 1990. Made me want to cry when they showed a banner in Gill for “NIT appearances”.
Ralph Miller would be so angry… Angrier than when I got his autograph at the book store without buying his book! “
Now… I guess it could be another Carson situation where he won’t make it due to academics. The transfer was a little strange… not because of the transfer itself, but because the governing body in that district went out of their way to say very loudly that Watson couldn’t play until January.
Beavers might want to look at the UC Anteaters coach. He is engaged and stands for big stretches guiding his team. Has some pretty impressive athletes so must be a pretty good recruiter.
I like Murray State’s Prohm as he has shown he can coach and has had success, plus he’s in OSU’s price range at $300,000 a year. Several schools have inquired about his services including LSU. I don’t know anything about Musselman, but I do think Robinson is safe because OSU simply can’t afford the buyout. If anyone gets canned, I think it will be DeCarolis.

If I were in Corvalis I would attend and possibly help organize. How can I help this cause from CA?
I hate my iPad. It can’t spell shet

I am sheep…laid 6 points tonight on the Beavs for the bounceback. We got one of our guys today, Chai Baker out of Florida.

good thing it wasn’t 6.5
His younger brother, Latte, is also being recruited by CR.
Shove the ball inside; Beavs win.
First Row stream: http://firstrowus1.eu/watch/221094/1/watch-oregon-state-vs-portland.html
Pregame: CR is still blaming the players for the loss. LOL
He has to. Per his postgame comments had the players followed the script, they would have won and it wouldn’t have been close.
He’s half right. The problem was his rotation was the wrong half.
That seems to run in the family.
I wonder if the University of Portland hates being called Portland State as much as we hate being called Oregon.
Better!
I like it when people mistake us for Oregon. It makes the Ducks look bad.
Gill is empty and dead
not a particularly nice thing to say about Slats.
I see what you did there :)
so can the beavs win the second half by 2.5?
Letting a lower division (can’t really say inferior) team hang around… This team is just bad.
UP is not lower division. Like OSU they are D1. There is no difference in basketball as exists in football. An arguement could be made that the WCC is not as strong as the WCC but both are D1.
I stand corrected.
The grass roots campaign to fire both Boob Declueless and coach Rob Knob is gaining traction with every mounting embarrassing loss, maybe going ofor the conference will be the final straw!
No lead is safe (or expected) with this team
If the fans are Charlie Brown and Riley is Lucy, then Robinson is Pigpen ’cause he’s stinkin’ up the joint
BDC=Charlie Brown. Looks just like him.
I wonder what CR is telling the players in the huddle… it’s probably comedic gold
Can’t play man to man and the zone leaves holes in the middle. Beavs up 2 with 6 min to play.
yay
I guess
aren’t I lucky with a freaking push at 6….nevermore, nevermore
Does Collier or any Beav for that matter ever make both their free throws at crunch time?
At least it gave you some entertainment value. I can’t really say I got that.
I’m not dancing in the streets yet, even Jay John’s 0-18 team won six non-conference games!
6 point win over a team picked to finish 7th in the WCC. Not impressed. Still can’t play any type of defense worth a shit.
I think they were picked 9th
I just looked at athlon and they had them 7th
3,179 in attendance. Does baseball make more money than basketball?

Forward to our Prez.
Damm if Robinson gets can still hope this Manderson Kid still comes to Corvallis
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/11/florida_center_isaiah_manderso.html
Solid offer list:
http://rivals.yahoo.com/basketballrecruiting/basketball/recruiting/player-Isaiah-Manderson-139714
The guard that committed, Chai Baker, had offers from Florida State, Georgia, Alabama, and UAB. He also gives the new practice facility a shout out.
He is also a refreshing drink.
The Mitten is coming, too. Warmer than a glove, but with less dexterity.
Congrats Beaver Nation….almost a total orange out at Gill last night! If a few senile die hards hadn’t been there the entire lower bowl would have been brilliant with all the bright orange empty seats. JB
It was kinda sad. You couldn’t even yell at the refs because everyone in the room knows who it is and looks at you.
Jack,

Agreed
Key word re: Olaf: slooooooooooooooooooow I didn’t look to see how many minutes he had last night, but they seemed too many.
That’s cool.

Fuck me!
I had a feeling yesterday when the news of his signing didn’t occur.
Watson has decommitted.
That’s why the mitten is in I guess.
This sucks.
Now… I guess it could be another Carson situation where he won’t make it due to academics. The transfer was a little strange… not because of the transfer itself, but because the governing body in that district went out of their way to say very loudly that Watson couldn’t play until January.
It still sucks. Watson is a good player.
probably watched our first two games and said fuck that
Connor wrote that the Beavs “decided not to sign” Watson.
you can’t quit because you’re fired!
I figured it was something like that.
Beavers might want to look at the UC Anteaters coach. He is engaged and stands for big stretches guiding his team. Has some pretty impressive athletes so must be a pretty good recruiter.
Turner has a decent resume. But his teams are too inconsistent thus far. And that’s with Big West competition.
But I’ll credit him with one thing. He saw that his N’diaye was bigger and stronger than anything UW had inside, and he just kept feeding the monster.
If only he had the brilliant idea to take his C and have him dribble around mid-court to start the offense. Then we could hire him.
If Coach Rob goes after this year (which he probably won’t). Then I’m looking at Eric Musselman first. He was on the short list back in 2008.
