Any word on whether Riley is back out recruiting or is he still in Corvallis? I’m afraid we’re going to lose some of our guys as signing day approaches and really hope the coaches are doing their best to keep the current crop from defecting. Bummer about Powe, I know we don’t need receivers, but he is talented and we need talent.

I believe he also visited David Fontenette, or at least was scheduled to.
I haven’t heard for sure, but he may have had a visit with Jake Eldrenkamp as well (again, or was scheduled to). I still think there’s a solid chance he’s ours if UW doesn’t offer. (though he just picked up an offer from Purdue.)

The Hawai’i coaching search committee meets at 6:30 PST this evening (4:30 in Hawai’i) to discuss the search. As stated previously, Rocky Freitas heads up this committee. So the politics might be in Banker’s favor.

Dec 11, 2011 – Stephen Tsai of the Honolulu Star-Advisor is reporting that the Hawaii Warriors have targeted three coaching candidates to head up their football program for 2012 as they are set to join the Mountain West Conference.
The Warriors wrapped up their final season in the Western Athletic Conference by finishing with a 6-7 record and going 3-4 in WAC play.Head coach Greg McMackin, who had been overseeing the program since 2008, resigned from his position on December 5.
For a potential replacement, the Warriors are said to be looking at Oregon State Beavers defensive coordinator Mark Banker, City College of San Francisco head coach George Rush and UH director of personnel George Lumpkin.
Banker is the biggest name of the three. He previously served as assistant head coach for the USC Trojans in 1996 and for the Stanford Cardinal in 2002. He has been the defensive coordinator for the Beavers since 2003. Banker has Warriors ties as well, serving as linebacker coach for Hawaii in 1995.

Kyle Whittingham Contract Extension Forces Penn State, Arizona State To Look Elsewhere
If the Penn St. Nittany Lions and Arizona St. Sun Devils were looking into Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham as a potential coaching replacement, as had been reported, they’ll need to keep looking. The Utes had reportedly given Whittingham a contract extension nearly a moon ago, announcing said extension Monday.

As you know Ivin has been the highly successful offensive coordinator at Navy for the last four seasons. If you are unaware his ties to Hawaii are deep and should make him the next head coach on the island.

And Dick Tomey, who was their ST coach this past year, recommends Duane Akuna. Lots of names being thrown out there. We’ll see where they’re headed soon enough.

Students want say in selection of new football coach

POSTED: 08:19 a.m. HST, Dec 12, 2011The student government at University of Hawaii at Manoa is asking for a say in the selection of the Warrior’s next football coach.
The students want two seats on the committee that will advise on the choice of the Warriors’ next football coach.
Associated Students of the University of Hawaii President Anna Koethe said the imposition of the mandatory $50 per semester student athletic fee earlier this year makes the students “stakeholders” in the program and has asked the Board of Regents and UH President M. R. C. Greenwood to seat two student members on the committee.
The UH athletic department received $818,000 from student fees for the spring semester.
Koethe said ASUH requested the seats last week but has yet to learn if they will be added.
The six-member committee, composed primarily of boosters and community members, is scheduled to hold its first meeting this afternoon.
“Unlike the head football coach search done in 2008, the members listed in this search advisory committee do not include any students or student athletes,” Koethe said in a press release this morning.
ASUH is asking for one representative from the student athletic fee committee and student athlete advisory committee to be part of the committee.

For a second name to throw in the hat should Banker get the Hawai’i job… if someone doesn’t poach him soon, I wouldn’t mind Chuck Heater getting a nice payday in Corvallis. Of course, it would require a defensive scheme change, and THAT WOULD BE BAD… 40 lashes with a wet noodle for thinking about it bad. Still, if the 5-2 worked for Florida, who are we to pooh pooh it?

Here’s an article right before the 2009 season. One of my takeaways after reading it was that there is no way in hell Riley is/was ever going to fire Banker and how much Riley hates change in general. This Hawaill job may be the only hope.

Meh…
The most likely scenarios are that either Banker stays because he doesn’t get the job, or that he does get it and Locey is moved to DC. Remember that Locey was the DC at Linfield forever before he bacame head coach.
I don’t think OSU puts forth the effort to find new blood that high up in the coaching ranks. Locey may be change enough. But who knows?

Yeah I would guess Locey would be a lock unless he didn’t want to position. He certainly “knows how to win”. His Linfield team had a 41 game winning streak at one point. Yes, its a different level, but still relevant. Perhaps it will be different enough. He is relatively new blood. I could also see him helping more the the offense, in which case I do think we see a new DC.

Cav applied for the head coaching job at Hawaii or just the o-line job? Wasn’t that his last job before coming to OSU? I don’t dislike him but it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to see him go.

The HC job itself, but their o-line coach did go to UCLA, if what i heard is correct.

I’ve said that Sonny Dykes would be a good hire at ASU. But if I was really serious about committing resources to that program (which they aren’t), then I would jump on the recent NFL firings as an opportunity to strike. I would go after Mike Nolan with a very large offer. Then i would hold my breath.

I wonder about that (down to 3) since the search committee had their first meeting just yesterday. Unless they knew who they were going to hire even before they forced McMackin to retire.

I had a dream last night that the Beavs invented a new style of defense…
the 3-4-4-1…3 down lineman, 4 LB’s, 4 CB’s and 1 rover to roam around between a CB, a Blitzer, or a safety. So he has to be big, fast, and strong, but not a LB size guy. When I think back to when Mitch Meeuwsen played for OSU, he was a rover. they let him roam ALL OVER the field and he even blitzed on occasion in run situations. I think we need to get back to that with our safeties cause all they do is read and react and help tackle. When was the last time a safety caused a turnover?

If we couldn’t win with a 3-4-4-1 defensive scheme (12 players on the field) I say we shelve the entire football program.

I think OSU Hoops will get back on track and reignite themselves on the path towards a special year. It has to be important for their inner selves to play with the common goal of defending home court and building a winning year through passion and determination to give it their true best.
