  1. let’s talk baseball. I noted in my football season ticket renewal booklet that plans are afoot for improvements down the RIGHT field foul line akin to the terrace down the Left field line. Connecting the first base side to a new seating arrangement out in the right field bleachers is the obvious next step and it’s time to increase Goss’s capacity in any event.

    • OSU is so fortunate to have Goss! Thanks in large part to Casey.
The park has a classic feel and look now and I think added capacity in the outfield won’t detract from that. Now, about the restroom situation….

Thinking of baseball reminds me of Casey’s first comment when interviewed at half time of this years CW; he immediately pointed out the lousy PI call on Treston. Ever the competitor, I know he’s not perfect but am so glad the Beavs have him!

      • I happened to be in the queue in the men’s restroom where the sound from that interview was being piped in. The guys might have been prancing waiting to get to the front of the line but when they heard Pat make that comment a cheer rose from those assembled.

      • The only person who thought DeCoud interfered with the pass was the stupid official – announcers were aghast – even the Oregon one.

  2. I usually hate anything Goe writes… but have to agree with him on McCaffrey and others who opt for NFL making a good decision not to play in bowl games. It is a dangerous sport and with millions at stake, plus the short life span in the NFL period, I would not risk it. Seems dis-loyal to the school but the schools have made millions of them… it is their turn.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/collegefootball/index.ssf/2016/12/monday_morning_news_notes_link_51.html#incart_river_index

      • LOL! I appreciate the sarcasm. This would really be a hard decision to make for anyone let alone a young one with their whole life in front of them. Even as a parent I’d be torn between finish what you started and don’t take the risk. All in all, it is different times today then even 5 years ago. TV deals has made college like professional sports. I think the college athlete of today is a different beast then yesterday.

        • Not even sarcasm. If you’re going to skip out anyway, why wait for the bowl? Might as well do it right when you think you’ve done enough for the draft. “Cool, got my 1500 yards. See ya, suckers!”

Yes, I’m saying this a tiny bit tongue-in-cheek

      • Golly, I don’t see anything wrong with quitting midseason. Heck, I basically quit midcareer, and yet Oregon State and these poor bastards – um, I mean fine husker folks still paid me to chew gum up and down the sidelines – uh, I mean coach. It’s a neat deal!

    • As a vagina, I am so proud of Christian for making this decision. It always makes me proud when someone backs out of a commitment when things get tough. Welcome to the club, Mr. McCaffrey!

    • This whole thing reminds me of when Willis McGahee blew up his knee in Miami’s bowl game (national championship game?)
I think it was the same year as the Beav’s Fiesta Bowl.

I think he was a guaranteed top 3 pick that year and his knee got destroyed in the last quarter of his final game. Probably cost him millions in draft stock. I suppose this is why they have i surance, but a sun bowl is hardly worth the risk of losing salary.

    • If a kid has a shot at getting a guaranteed large sum of money I don’t blame them one bit for bailing early. I’m sure this isn’t the case w.r.t. McCaffrey but for a lot of these kids it’s either getting the money, or if they get injured, doing something like driving a UPS truck; or pimping whores and selling drugs in someplace like Las Vegas; or being a gangster or…..

FWIW: here’s an example of how good these kids have it now….. Back in the ’60’s ex-Beav, Amos Marsh was playing for the Lions. I was told that during the off season he worked as a guard on the night shift at the Ford plant in Fremont CA. Million dollar bonuses or salaries? Unheard of back then.

    • I agree with McCaffrey’s decision. It’s all about risk vs. reward. If he doesn’t play in his last game with his teammates, he’s going to regret it until he sees his first paycheck. But if he plays and gets hurt, he’s going to regret it a lot longer, from the time he gets his first paycheck until the day he dies.

      • Yup.

Like it or not, it’s in his best self-interest to abandon the team who gave him the platform to be held in such high regard, draft-wise.

  3. Back to The Nation’s Pastime; Gadget Times reports:

Oregon State right-handed pitcher Bryce Fehmel and infielder KJ Harrison have each been named a preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball…
… Oregon State is the only team from the Pac-12 Conference to have two players selected.

    http://www.gazettetimes.com/albany/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-harrison-fehmel-tabbed-as-preseason-all-americans/article_e1d7df7f-2f95-5dac-acd3-27d99cd66468.html

  4. Super hero effort by Wiese in that game. Breanna Brown did a good job too, plus made some key free throws. UNLV let that one get away from them.

Free throws, free throws, free throws….how many times do we see making them versus not making them being the difference in a basketball game. Nice job by Pivec getting those two at the end. If I had a player who couldn’t make at least 70-75% at the line, I would make them come in early and shoot free throws, and stay late & shoot free throws and I would make them do it every day until they could. Just an essential skill for an upper level player to have.

  5. I get an assist for the victory. I watched UNLV make their run to go up 9 until Rueck called the timeout in the 4th. I had the awareness to shut it off and let them win without me watching anymore.
    Go Beavs!

    • Rueck calls appropriate timeouts that seem to make a difference. Tinkle and Robinson b4 him, wtf?ones. Perhaps it’s in the mbb job description.

  6. Per Canzano:
Oregon State assistant Derrick Odum will be named Defensive Coordinator at San Jose State, per source. He will join Brent Brennan’s staff.

I don’t know if it’s a huge loss – didn’t really hear much about him. Our DBs did play decent tho. Confident GA can fill this spot and the WR spot.

    • Cory Hall is the corner backs coach. Odum coached safeties and maybe something else. Too lazy to look it up.

Before another fake troll like beavers4life chimes in I’ll say it first……

Jonathan Smith is going to be the next defensive coach at Oregon State!!!!

      • No, Klune is the DC. I’m not sure what direction GA wants to go on the defensive side of the ball. He could add another Safeties coach, or he could hire a DL coach. Just depends if he wants to coach the DL again next year.

        • Durrrrrrr. I said defensive coach not defensive coordinator. But I suspect Klune will take over as safeties coach and JS will be our next defensive coordinator due to the timing and circumstances of Odum leaving.

See, I can make up stupid shit and post it on the internet with zero factual information too

          • I thought this was a blog? How many times have I posted on this BLOG and been ridiculed, but come back? Not many…reason why? For moments like this right here. If you want people to follow and grow with this site, I suggest not putting people down for having OPINIONS of their own that may not coincide with your train of thought. Maybe you should consider petitioning to have this be “Angry’s Cronies Blog” instead of Angry Beavers Blog?

I may not be liked here, I may not have ideas that people will back, but I keep coming back because it’s good information that is hard to find elsewhere in the main stream media. Try looking in the mirror sometime and look at your reflection rather than looking through a two way mirror into other peoples’ lives.

You also, clearly missed my point. So instead of reiterating it, I’ll leave my thoughts with this last comment.

            Merry Christmas you filthy animal!

          • I’ll just leave this here………….

            Beavers4life says:
            DECEMBER 11, 2016 AT 9:16 PM
            Rating: -1 (from 1 vote)

Based on this article at the end talking about the new coach, hire no later than Jan. 5th or 6th. By this timeline tells me he’s after a coach on a playoffs team. My guess is Jonathan smith to OC.

You got your opinion wrong, were told why it was wrong and given factual information as to why it was wrong. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. And yes I am one. Need a tissue and retreat to your safe space?

Merry butthurt Christmas to you too

  7. Re the link posted by homefry above:

    http://www.espn.com/blog/pac12/post/_/id/107261/oregon-state-might-be-the-next-colorado

I hope I’m misreading the following Andersen quote:

“It will be a highly competitive environment and we’re going to move quickly to decipher who gives us the best opportunity to run the offense,” Andersen said.

That could be taken to mean we’re going to run “our” offense come hell or high water instead of we’re going to modify our offense so that it best suits the QB with the most talent.

  8. Beavergopher, what’s the deal with Kill take the Rutgers OC job? I thought he was too sick to coach anymore. Was he doing his best “urban meyer at florida” impression?
By the way this is 8 OCs at Rutgers in 8 years. Talk about trying to find your identity.

          • Awwww… are all the douches and tiny penises who approve of this metaphor now suddenly thinking what they approve of as a metaphor might be as stupid as it really is?

Fuck you, you stupid peons. You can soak up all the gooey effluence from me, the bloody pussy prodded by your mini dicks and soaked up by your spawn.

            Your metaphor, your game.

          • Who’s defensive?

I’m embracing the persona within your context. You think calling someone a thin-skinned pussy is fine. I don’t care, so I can talk your language since that’s what you want to do.

There’s no defensive mentality. There is only what you want to talk about on display. I’m a thin-skinned pussy. If I play out your logic, I am being prodded by something phallic. And thin skin breaks. And I don’t have any problem embracing your likeness of me as a bloody mess of a pussy. I’ll give you all the effluence you can handle.

But it looks like you can’t handle the very language you want to use. I can talk like a sailor too. If I do, I don’t get all whiny when someone follows my lead, as you are now.

Now you’re a bloody pussy too.

  9. I don’t know how much you all care about advanced analytics but I prefer Bill Connelly’s S&P+ system. He breaks down all of his methods as opposed to someone like Jeff Sagarin who’s system is essentially a black box. The beavs went from 102nd in 2015 to 62nd this season according to S&P+

  10. Baseball team to open the season with a consensus top 10 ranking. Likely based on talent level vs what happened last year. Guys really struggled hitting last year when it was supposed to be pitching that was the weaker side.

Only hit .233 in pac12 play.
These guys are the key, Grenier, Larnach, and Harrison. All hit poorly in Pac12 play.

    Lineup –
    1. Madrigal – SS
    2. Donahue – 2B
    3. Harrison – 1B
    4. Elliot – RF
    5. Nobach – CF
    6. Larnach – DH
    7. Kwan – CF
    8. Gretler – C
    9. Grenier – 3B

Hard to see any of the incoming freshman beat any of these guys out without injuries.

    SP1 – Heimlich
    SP2 – Fehmel
    SP3 – ??

    Weekday – Gambrell

Bonus adds would be Tweedt and Rasmussen.

Freshman pitchers should make an impact.
Gambrell should be able to come in and contribute right away.

Injuries really derailed last year to an abnormal extent so one would think this year will be the opposite.

    • Why?

We look pretty good right now for offering the next upcoming assistants. We can’t guarantee excess pay. But we’ve had two assistants take HC jobs, and another two position coaches went on to become DCs.

Other than two HCs ditching us for the NFL, Burton is the only other assistant I can recall being promoted away from our staff. I’m sure there are more, but it hasn’t been happening in a while.

  11. I’m on vacation, took the kids to Disney Land. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the number of beaver supporters in southern California. I’ve been repping the beavs gear and there have been quite a few other people with it too. I’ve also got a lot of “go Beavs”. Makes me pretty happy to see this support in another state.

  12. Same links as last night (see above) for the video/audio of the WBB game vs Quinnipiac Bobcats coming up at 8:00. Last night I was able to pause the video in order to sych it up with Ron Callan’s call of the game.

I like Callan’s work; but, then again, I have no problem with Jay Reese who calls the baseball games at the beginning of the season.

Anyone familiar with Quinnipiac? I see they are ranked 6th in the Mid-Major Poll (our old friends Gonzaga are 2nd). They are 8-2 so far, only losses this season are to Temple and Michigan State.

EDIT– Here is the correct link, video and it includes Callan’s call:

    • Hard for me to disagree. He got a $50k bonus for the CW win and w/o this one year extension (not a 5 year deal as mentioned above) he still could tell recruits that he will be on the job for four more full years.

Is this the best way for the AD (who?) and the institution to show (well deserved, IMHO) support right now?

        • He got one more year over his old contract. Who cares he didn’t get 5 extra years. I’m assuming they put a big buyout clause in this most recent one just incase someone wants to poach him. It’s good business, but we don’t know until they release the numbers. They also could have added money for staff. to me that’s a good plan, we have lost 4 coaches in 2 years, turnover like that can play havoc on a rebuild. Again we don’t know the details except GA was given one more year to his previous contract, big deal.
And bill loves the Debbie Downer angle, hence “I bet you’re fun at parties” post.

          • Why does he deserve an extension now?

I see it as setting a dangerous precedent. Does he get an extension next year if they make a bowl game? How is that any different than Riley getting one year added for a winning record?

          • I think it’s a good idea because he has the program trending in the right direction. We have seen tangible improvement from the team on and off the field, off is the most important. And with many middle of the road schools losing their coaches to upper level schools it’s a good idea. This is all an assumption by the way, I’m assuming they put a large buyout clause in the contract, and really just gave him an extra year with a token amount of money with some better incentives.

  13. I like the 1 year extension. It tells GA that we want him to stick around but it’s not a ridiculous, potentially endless extension like we’re used to. It also seems like Ed Ray wanted to get this inked before we hire a new AD so a brand new hire wouldn’t have to think about it.

  14. A few nuggets from Footballscoop.com

12/21/16: Oregon State: According to John Canzano, Oregon State has offered their athletic director position to Pitt AD Scott Barnes and the two parties are in negotiations.

    https://twitter.com/johncanzanobft/status/811659249415659520

12/20/16:Oregon State: Phoenix College passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Kerry Taylor will join Oregon State’s staff as a quality control assistant working with the wide receivers. – With that job title, it doesn’t sound like Taylor is part of the coaching staff with respect to the NCAA staff limits.

  15. I hadn’t seen this Andersen quote before and find it to ease some of my concerns.

“…He will take the philosophy shifts into consideration when choosing a new assistant coach to replace former receivers coach Brent Brennan, who left to become the head coach at San Jose State.

“We want to still be who we are, we want to run the ball effectively, be a tough, physical unit, but there are some different pieces to that offense,” he said. “I think that the quarterback is a big part of that, I think that the hire that we are going to make needs to have education in those areas and have an experience in that area that allows us to move forward as an offensive staff and as a group of players.

“So to be able to get where we want to go there needs to be some tweaks. Is it wholesale change? No. But some tweaks in there and that starts with every position group on that offensive side of the ball as far as understanding, getting the terminology….”

    http://m.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-philosophy-shifts-coming-on-offense/article_0aea36ea-7853-57f8-a852-ba33bdd98112.html

    Keep digging GA, keep digging.

  16. It seems to me that a football player considering an OSU offer would take note of 1) Andersens’s contract extension 2) assistant coaches being hired away to good programs 3) statements such as the GT one and 4) Harlow, DeCoud, Chappell, (Is there one more?) in all-star bowls, and Lavaka and Crawford in national freshman selections – not bad for a 4-8 team. You too can shine!

But I trend toward happy endings and I must remember Corvallis doesn’t have an airport.

  17. Article on Moore here in the Portland Tribune. He mentions he texted GA before the CW, and that many (I guess several) Dolphins played for him at Utah State and Utah

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/256-sports/kerry-eggers/337036-217126-moore-dolphins-thinking-playoffs

Hope he gets them into the playoffs and enjoys at least a few victories there, he deserves it. I didn’t realize he hadn’t yet played in the NFL post season. Denver or Texas should have traded for him….he probably wouldn’t have required a high pick and they’d be better off for it…

  18. Not a fan of switching the sidelines at Gill unless the players’ benches also change. A big part of watching a game is watching the sideline reactions & coaching. All that is lost the way the Beavers are doing it now in Gill. There is a reason 99.9% of venues face the camera toward the benches. NBA would never allow this as ratings would drop. Sorry but this change, and then not moving the benches with it, is amateur hour. Hope the next AD fixes it right away.

    • Problem is you can’t have students behind the bench. So you either need to make that lower section general admission or your back to season ticket holders not showing up and making the tv view look like no one is there. Damned if you do damned if you don’t.

      • Why can’t you have students behind the bench? UW and Kansas have students behind theirs. I’m sure there’s more but those two come to mind.

        • It’s not that you can’t have students behind the bench. It’s that you would then have to have in place rules and punishments for the students sitting behind the bench in terms of noise and demeanor. Then you would have to have a cadre of grim looking adults standing in front of the section keeping them from making zingers.

This has been a good year for the TV viewing public to not be seeing the bench.

          • Those aren’t excepted. They have an “understanding” with students that they not act like douches behind an opposing bench. And the students abide. There are still grumpy adults standing around.

Should we ask Stan Love what he thinks about this? If you can’t agree to be a good sport, then why would you pretend to like sports?

If you’d rather not deal with the politics of the minutiae which will arise from some bad-apple dolt who thinks it’s okay for him to be a jerk in public, you just put the peanut gallery on the other side.

So my solution would be to switch sides, students and benches. And put the visiting bench next to the band. I’ve never heard a trumpet blab anything about anyone’s sister.

      • Was at game and there were more empty seats on side camera was showing then behind the bench. So any benefit from that claim is mute IMO.

  19. Beavs out rebounded 44-35, turn the ball over 24 times, win by 19 thanks to a blistering 28% shooting performance by Kent State that included going 1 for 24 from 3.

  20. Nicebeaver, et al.

    Any new recruit info?

I’ve been following twitter and just see that we’re waiting on the commits to make their decision… boring!

    Jordan Agasiva 3* JC OT
    George Moore 3* JC OT
    Trajon Cotton 3* Athlete

    Decommitment of:
Lorenzo Fauatea 3* DE (mission kid? was it parting of both sides?)

I know the staff are going after a few more… maybe that Wedington 4* RB from UW that decommitted… Do we have a shot?

    • It’s quiet mostly because it’s the dead period, so i think most if the coaches are enjoying some break/vacation time since they cant visit players and players cant official visit right now.
Come mid january, you’ll see guys like Aaron Short, Cotton and maybe Weddington visit. Probably more.

Agasiva will likely announce this weekend.

Moore has a ton of new offers. The longer he drags things out, the worse it looks for OSU. Still holding out hope, but he could take as long as february to decide now

Rahyme Johnson announced jan 6th but i doubt we get him.

      Cotton-Hasnt visited yet.
Fauatea- i dont even count mission kids as true commits, so losing one also isnt really viewed as a loss, in my opinion.

Wedington- doubt he comes to osu. Has a ton of offers and more coming. Who passes up stanford for osu? I cant think of anybody.

Sorry, i dont have much to report on the positive side. Main hope is we maintain our current class, and convince a few guys like Pili/Calvin/Cotton/Agasiva/Moore to come here.

Would hate to lose Green, so I hope having Moran/Taylor/Rashed and coach Taylor here helps keep him with us. I think he could be a gem in this class. Basically what we hoped Paul Lucas would be.
