  1. Cute how new thread goes up when your opinions on suicide are not popular. I mention how I’ve been on scene at numerous suicides and attempts and you’re so ridiculous you say well I know a lot too cuz I’ve read books and I know people who’ve done it.

It’s okay to sometimes say this topic is not in my wheelhouse and I’ll leave it alone.

  2. Article on WSU new athletic director Chun:

    http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2018/jan/16/reports-florida-atlantics-pat-chun-to-be-named-new/

Formerly at Ohio State and Florida Atlantic University (Conf. USA). Maybe he’ll bring Kiffin back to the PAC someday after Leach moves on….Will be curious to see how well Chun performs in comparison to Barnes.

BTW, didn’t Leach attempt to sign with Tennessee but their AD got fired before he could sign the contract? No ramifications for Leach at WSU as a result?

  3. kind of interesting that OSU seems to be unable to get anyone to commit. Signing day will be interesting.

Note: This is why I think the early signing day will end up helping OSU long term, the big boys won’t have a free month to re-evaluate guys and flip them.

    • It’s a different environment now. The guys who didn’t sign early are now getting a ton of attention. They’ll milk it for all it’s worth. I wouldn’t expect much until the week leading up to signing day.

    • I think it will end up hurting. The 3/4 star guys will hold out to be scooped up to fill out the misses of the other higher programs. I think it will be tough for the Beavs to he onto guys that wait.

      • I doubt it, look at the top programs. Many already have around 20 guys signed. And this is year 1 with early signing; I think it future years that will be the norm and not signing early will be the exception. Players will want to ensure they don’t get left without a chair when the music stops.

        • I agree. Usually the lower rung schools get poached this time of year as the power schools miss out on their Plan A guys. We were in a bad situation with the coaching change/ chaos this year.Row the Boat guy played it perfectly. Full class signed by 10 AM CST on the early signing day. Gets a head start on the ’19 class. Smart. Probably the only guys that don’t sign earlywill be the very top 4-5 stars and the prima donnas that love the short lived stardom. Predictably Urban and Saban thought it was a bad idea. They may get stuck with a couple of 3 star dregs when the music stops.
Oh the horror! Hopefully spreads the talent out a bit.

        • Agree, think it helps to have a base of guys and try to put a cherry or two on top. Can focus more attention on those guys, even if you lose out (it’s not like they were going to sign early anyway).

          • Yea good point. Bama ( my other team) offered Purdy the other day. Also a Beav wishful target. And he’s a guy they were slow playing as a preferred walk on for the longest. For Nick to come off a scholly for a current 3 Star QB is rare and only a result of the new dynamic.

  4. Regarding QB recruitment, is there anything positive from the coaches regarding Luton? I mean, they may get “stuck” with him, right? There doesn’t seem to be any P-12 ready QB’s in the waiting room. Will Smith make Luton better? That may be all we can get at this point.

  5. Any word on recruiting violations for Oregon? Seems like now would be a good time for something solid to come through. Seems like the momentum of following up on bball issues with Altman was lost when story dropped around the holidays. Thanks for any update.

  6. Oregon and Nebraska are wanting to join in on the Purdy sweepstakes now. Guy really increased his options by not committing early

  7. Trust me, Mike isn’t stealing stuff from this site. Dude has a bit more integrity than that. Its not impossible that someone is reading this and then providing the information to him as a “source”. Plus it has to feel pretty good knowing that your free info, is superior to the paid sites…….there are some tidbits of info that they share that does not make it onto this site, but nothing toooooo crazy. Nice work NiceBeaver.

    • I trust you, but i also know he reads this site(aka one of his “sources”) and then uses what he finds to follow up on guys, while bitching to his users the same is happening in reverse.

      • LOL! The fact that everyone.. Excluding you Nice Beav gets so worked up about information sharing is so funny to me. Mike is a good dude but he does complain about people stealing “his info” which a lot of times is clearly your info or quite possibly the same info that is simultaneously being leaked out. Anyways… none of this should be viewed as “proprietary information” is my point. It’s college football recruiting not ballistic missile intelligence. Perspective is key here.

        • Some people have a perspective that they need to make a profit.

Complaining about info that’s pretty much free is easier than working for said profit.

    • Shurod’s a good guy who had some academic issues coming out of highschool, after transferring and moving between homes in highschool. He went the juco route after committimg to OSU and I think also was a Marahall commit at one point.
He says he has a 2.8 GPA now and was a December grad, so he “should: be available to transfer by spring ball, but really hard to say how realistic the chances of him landing back at OSU are.
He doesn’t know any of our coaches and hasnt been in contact with them, and Safety/CB isnt a position of huge need(although we did lose Hudson, and beggers cant be choosers, as we have seen with this class)

Long stort short, he would be interested in OSU if they are interested as well. Now, we just need our coaching staff to decide if they want to pursue him.

      • SF progressive in dealing with the homeless? SF progressive?

You must not know SF. I remember incidents in the not so distant past where they had the cops simply haul them off in near-riot situations. They’ve done little in a foundational sense to claim progressivity in that city for about four decades now.

When it comes to NIMBY and the 1%, nobody whines better or more “effectively” than they do. How much do you think it costs to live in SF? What kind of result do you think they deserve for their non-progressive methods?

As for your link, please warn the user that you are linking some anti-vaxxer conspiracy site. Some of those whackadoodle sites harbor some nasty softwares.

The actual story of it was pretty interesting.
        https://nypost.com/2015/01/02/human-feces-map-finds-san-franciscos-homeless/

It actually started a conversation about the need for a transient infrastructure. Of course, walking through the Tenderloin or around GGP could have told them this. But it takes a poop map to embarrass the 1% enough to even talk about it. So I think it will be lost with the news cycle except for whatever urban legend form it takes on sites like you linked, those that click-troll the doofi for a living.

De Blasio was actually pretty funny about his statement about NY. To paraphrase, he said most every neighborhood in the city when asked if they would like a homeless shelter in their proximity would say no. The city has the authority to do this and needs to open some 90 shelters to address the transient population. This is just a part of that. Deal with it.

          • In case someone didn’t read all the way to the end:

“This is particularly relevant because the archdiocese really has been a hero in terms of the homeless services it provides in this city. Few of us can say the same, and we know it.”

But this problem is not solvable by charity alone. I certainly don’t have any answers.

          • It isn’t solvable by charity. Most homeless (most who are visible) suffer from conditions that would put them in mental health facilities, were we to go back to funding said facilities. When America collectively dumped thousands of mentally unstable people on the streets with no support system in place, the homeless population bloomed with corresponding numbers. The UK has been doing the same recently, and they see the correlation in more people sleeping rough.

Instead of reacting to the issue, an ounce of prevention would be more efficient. I don’t think homeless shelters are the answer for the overall issue. But they do provide transitional housing for able-bodied/minded people who would otherwise end up on the street, competing for limited resources and expanding the public footprint of the homeless overall.

          • Re: hostile architecture

That’s sort of the point. People don’t want it in their backyard, so it’s left to private enterprise to sweep their doors, so to speak. It looks more and more like East Germany in this country every day. That passive aggressive disdain for indigence is a turn-off to visitors, even subliminally… worse if you’re aware of it. It says, “stay away,” to everyone.

You could probably make a portfolio out of all you see… two if you do one for no-skate architecture.

        • The funniest thing about the homeless problem is that study after study has demonstrated it is less expensive to simply give people a place to live than to handle the homeless issue the way we do today. When given a home the people who are homeless through back circumstance quickly get back on their feet, those who are homeless due to substance abuse are given an opportunity to get help, and those who are homeless due to mental health issues should be given help just because that is the whole reason you have a society.

Yet, we can do it even though its less expensive simply because people will bitch its a handout.

The reality is that automation isn’t going away and capitalism will never be able to provide enough quality jobs for people to live a middle class lifestyle ever again. We as a society need to be open to ideas that augment capitalism or homelessness, extreme poverty, and crime are only going to get worse.

Remember, even rich people need someone to clean up after them and sell them goods/food. If those people can’t afford to live they aren’t gonna keep doing it.

          • Well said.

The false narrative of “boot straps” and all that cloud reality for people and make them insensitive, and then even worse, hateful. Republicans are good at those narratives though. They got people to vote against their own interests in repealing med mal, workers comp, etc via Reagan’s “tort reform” propaganda. Joe the Plumber constantly votes against Joe the Plumber because he falls for that hatred masked as moral high ground, and then he gets bitter that Joe the Electrician is getting X for “free” and he isn’t, instead of realizing Joe the Electrician gets x for free because his life is horrible and he needs it. Very bizarre.

Dems have many false narratives too, of course. Which is why no party affiliation is the way to go.

          • We’re 14 years beyond What’s the Matter With Kanas? (or What’s the Matter With America? overseas). The problem is that battle was won long ago, but “leadership” feels the need to stir up the base where the battle is already won. I suppose they need a distraction. That gay black terrorist welfare queen with six kids and no job in Baltimore is why Kansas sucks… not Kansas’ leadership and policies–policies known to have failed always previously.

And the Dems’ false narratives are simply a reaction to these weird GOP attacks. I think it’s intentional, as in coordinated with the GOP. “You scare them from the “right”, and we’ll scare them from the “left”. Before they realize we’re all a bunch of rich fucks who never gave a damn about any of this social garbage, they won’t have anything left.”

The problem with proving it’s coordinated is that those on the “right” seem to think that throwing the rule of law out the window in order to discriminate (against anyone) is hunky dory. The same people doing the same things they did 10 years ago, to much angst and hand-wringing (also attributes to be hated) from the opposition were at least explained away as some sort of high-minded policy play. Now they just say, “it’s better to hire a pedophile than it is to hire a Dem,” or their actual defense of new gerrymandering openly says as much.

It’s like they forgot they need to pretend to be decent people, and decent people no longer care. HRC’s deplorables meme was the same for her supporters. They rewarded her for stooping to that level, no questions asked.

And then that wholesale disregard for a large demographic turns into name-calling. It’s all so dumb.

When will people look at the policies passed which directly affect us? I see Devin Nunes is having issues with the fallout from the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act. Well, no shit, Sherlock. You knew this would happen when we told you this would happen, and you told us irrational fraidy-cat responses to vague threats were the way real patriots act.

And there are Dems who voted for the same policies. We can try to discern whether they were looking for political cover or not. But HRC voting for AUMF is why she’s not POTUS.

Well… many of us remember Cattle-gate, the one thing she may have done illegally in all her years, and this:
            https://www.counterpunch.org/2007/11/12/why-hillary-s-health-care-plan-really-failed/

So I don’t think that argument flies. I think it’s as simple as where the money comes from to get them elected. Big money knows how to manipulate markets. All one needs to have big money in their corner is to sell out.

          • The one thing I will never understand is why anyone would elect someone who promises to hate their job and mandate. I’ve never met anyone during a hiring interview who said, “Yeah… your company sucks, and you need me to fix it… by refusing to do my job. But I’ll take the pay raises for doing less, thank you very much.”

    • Pretty ridiculous to be putting a homeless shelter on top of some of the most valuable real estate in the world. It’s a block from Central Park – probably going to see some problems with that. These homeless people are going to be living next to one of the most desirable locations in the world and I’m helping to pay for this shit.

  8. This new NCAA transfer rule is a big thing and should be hashed out by everyone. It will be used frequently by many kids with the mentality that “I should be starting” or “I’ll just take my ball and go else where”. I believe it is a good rule – but safeguards need to be put in place.

#1 – The ability to bring in as many kids as open schollies will be a must. And that number could exceed 30 kids easily. 20 Graduates + 10 transfers + 5 academic casualties = OUCH!! If your not allowed to replace transfers – you’ll be in a never ending hole in no time.

#2 – I’m hearing about the “Farm System” theory already. Hypothetically if Alabama is willing to work out a financial agreement $$$ with XYZ FCS University to hide or develop or evaluate players, small school could also succeed. Big Dollars and possibly a infusion of talent – all be it for a very short period of time. Big school pull talent when needed.

I’m sure many other factors will also need to be addressed. The question is will NCAA think about them?

    • Apparently you read the piece, glad you did. Lots of unintended consequences here, not the least of which is the effect on actual STUDENT-athletes.

    • #1 – So… If Bama tells 30 kids that they’re going to “medically retire” and has another 20 graduating, they get to pick and choose 50 newcomers?

I know that’s an extreme hypothetical. But you can probably see that unlimited consumption doesn’t really make a good policy. I’d rather see a constriction on ships first. There’s not much need for 85 players on a football roster, as much as any of the coaches would whine otherwise. FCS limits are pretty spot on for the college game, assuming you carry a rolling 20 developmental players.

      • I disagree with that. Even NFL teams keep 90 in the offseason and 63 (not counting injuries) during the season (including practice squad). If FBS dropped to 63 scholarships you’d have maybe 10 developmental guys, 85 is a really good number. And FCS allows teams to give partial scholarships, they are still allowed to have 85 total players on scholarship, its just that some aren’t getting full rides.

I personally think teams should be allowed to add 25 new scholarship athletes every year. I don’t think you need a total number of scholarships limit at all. If you keep everyone healthy, eligible, and in your program you shouldn’t have the number of new guys you can add limited.

The problem was never programs having too many guys, it was programs handing out unlimited scholarships each year. Capping everyone at 25 new players per year coupled with the ability to transfer benefits student athletes which should be the goal. It would also prevent coaches from running guys off. A coach might still be honest and tell a kid he likely won’t play much but if the kid loves the school and wants to finish their education there the coach would have no incentive to convince him to leave. That is a good thing.

        • Good point about the partials for FCS. But I was thinking they were 68 for some reason. I figured 70 was about right. 50 or so game ready plus 20 developmental plus walk-ons.

It’s the only way to keep the sport from becoming a joke, as if it’s not now. If you take 15 players off the top 30 teams’ rosters (those that make a profit in any given year, but include a pretty static 17 or 18 programs), that’s 300 players finding homes elsewhere. Teams like OSU benefit, and the low hanging fruit syndrome dissipates. G5 schools become better as well.

Right on down the line, quality of play increases with labor constriction in FBS because the labor supply doesn’t meet the demand for the numbers as they are.

That’s not to say coaches aren’t playing it like they already have equilibrium… and stashing the cash in the process.

Besides, if the ship level is at 70, then the walk-ons get to travel for conference games. Why do hate walk-ons?

          • Who cares about competitive balance, this isn’t a pro sport. The more opportunities for kids to get to play college sports the better.

          • But does the 100th player at Alabame actually get to play college sports or just say they were on the team? Wouldn’t they get more playing time at a ‘lesser’ school?

          • Who said less kids would be playing college sports?

A more quality product with actual competition would bring more demand to see said product, increasing revenues. 15 less men having a ship would mean an equal representation from the women’s side needs to leave the school as well. So those 15 could make up another program not currently available to PSAs who would love nothing more than to go to college too.

          • Some people actually want to go to a specific school regardless of playing time.

Less scholarships would mean less scholarships. You aren’t gonna see schools add football simply because its 15 less scholarships.

Sorry but I will never support giving out less opportunities to kids.

          • There won’t be less opportunities for kids. Where do you get that bunk?

You can’t just remove 15 men’s ships from the university and not remove an equitable amount from women’s sports as well due to Title IX. So you have to build them back into the system. An easy way for most would be to add men’s swimming and water polo. I think that’s 15 right there. T&F? Hello? How many OSU PSAs don’t get the chance to go to school at OSU because they don’t have that opportunity?

You need to stop thinking that football players are the only athletes who deserve opportunity, especially since their developmental labor pool is shrinking at a good rate. The game will soon be a dinosaur, and we need to be prepared to live in a world where it isn’t as valued as it is now.

          • Doubt it, most schools would simply remove 15 opportunities for woman. Many of those opportunities only exist so schools can have more football players.

          • Also, a not so well kept secret is that outside the schools who do work in the black for football, they don’t max ship limits for their secondary sports. Schools are making football whole in order to play for guarantees at body bag games so they can pay for football so they can keep football whole.

There’s a lot more opportunity cost in football roster sizes being inflated than there is in moving them closer to equilibrium.

          • Don’t disagree but those schools aren’t gonna add non-revenue schollies simply because football has less. Its just not gonna happen. I’d argue if you remove 15 football schollies you’d be removing 15 from some other sport too since it likely only exists to even out the numbers.

          • If you’re talking about the short-sighted view that everything exists to make football whole, I don’t doubt those schools exist. Most football schools are up against it in terms of conference minimums, so you would be incorrect to think whole programs would be cut. Those who would simply remove ships from existing programs simply want to suck in perpetuity. If they can’t see the lost opportunities of this or that kid becoming the next whatever in this world, it says more about them than it says about anything.

There would be a simple solution to this, if you want to continue to posit most schools would just do the wrong thing. Have the NCAA make them do the right thing.

Question: How much more or less expensive is a football ship compared to other sports?

          • Football’s not going anywhere for now. But it will soon enough. If these schools don’t want to give their students the opportunity to learn from sports as well as get an education, I’m more inclined to make them prove their narrative for giving their SAs any kind of opportunity.

If you say they’re just outright lying because they like football, so be it. They’re still lying.

      • I like the 4 game rule but do think that conference title and Bowl games should not be part of the 4. Especially Bowl games. I don’t like the idea that a coach could decide to use a Bowl to get a jump on the next season and play all his freshman while all the seniors sit.

Outside of that I think its good for the sport.

    • Anyone half wondering if there might be a serial killer on the loose with a vendetta against people related to college football, staging the murders to look like suicides? That’s probably not what’s happening, of course, but damn…

      • Was this guy a player?

Traumatic brain injury comes into play from the hits. Remember a few NFL guys doing this (from memory Junior Seuo and that guy on the KC Chiefs).

Bill Snyder is the best coach of our era. The true “more with less” guy. Mad respect for that guy. Sad day for him.

        • Not that this should be part of the conversation, but it is. Snyder was already on the fence when it came to the decision about whether to coach another year. He wanted his son to take over eventually, although KSU seems to have other plans. If this event causes the Snyder family to take a break and walk away from football, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jim Leavitt jump on over to KSU to take Snyder’s place. Apparently still has an out clause in his contract where moving to take that specific job does not require him to pay a buyout to oregon.

        • I said it’s probably NOT what’s happening. But two suicides happening practically back to back, when you rarely hear about any related to college football is amazing (in a bad way obviously)

        • And btw, I am not “playing” anything. I was serious about the possibility creeping into my head since these tragedies suddenly happened and so close to each other. But sanctimonious outrage all you want.

  9. WSU apparently is/was prepared to bring Jacob Eason in as a transfer QB from Georgia this week? Eghh…..i’m not touching this one…

      • Not sure I agree, I agree with you that Luton isn’t a starting level player in the PAC but he does provide depth and given what else is currently in Corvallis I think the program would be better off having him on the roster.

        • Agree he’d be fine as depth, but the problem is he’d start if he’s on the roster.
Hopefully this lights a fire under their buts to go land a legit QB. Should be able to sell the starting job easily if Luton retires.

      • I would say good decision based on the scariness of that hit/injury. He was lucky to not be paralyzed in the first place, actually had a broken vertebra and now has been trying to get back on the field. Sad that his dream of big-time football ends here, but that isn’t such breaking news that someone’s dreams of big-time football end at OSU.

Maybe makes a guy like Eason look twice at OSU. Or any qb, anywhere, JuCO, High School, Grad transfer…Does JS plan on winning without a qb?

Could there be some stategy to revolutionize college football by going without a qb rather than 1-2 qbs on the field at all times?

      • It would be good news not only for the program, but for Luton as well. Better not to risk your body and mind like that than go too far and end up having health problems in the future.

    • If he was a friend or relative of mine, I’d seriously have him consider retire from playing football. I’m not a medical expert, but a thoracic fracture at such a young age? Man…he’s got a lot of life yet to live.

  10. So get this. That tweet beavrecruiting out out last night about shurod thompson with all of the coaches tagged ended up getting Greg Burns and him reconnected. Burns had recruited him to Cal and Thompson was briefly committed to Cal prior to choosing OSU, back in 2015/2016.
Far from a done deal at this point, but much closer than it was at this time yesterday.

  11. How about predictions yet for UO WBB @ OSU? UO seems to have the upper hand right now within the context of the season, but home court advantage. OSU wanting to maintain their alpha female(s) status….hope Gill is rocking for the game.

Will the game get its own thread?

    • The ladies have to cut down on their TO these have just killed them this year. I’ll go with the home town magic too and call for a Beavers victory

      • Yup, need to keep TO’s under 12 or so. I’m just as concerned with the old “live by the three:die by the three”…….last game they scored, what? 16? I fear a return to the mean.

Also, Marie needs to stay out of foul trouble.

Hope I’m wrong, gonna be surprised if they take one of the two CW’s this weekend. And, of course, the most likely one would be at Gill. To ObjCritic’s “hope Gill is rockin'” I’ll say there is NO DOUBT it will be, Corvallis and Beaver Nation LOVE these gals!

EDIT/ADD: Attendance tonight was 5330, Ann Schatz(sp) said on JoeBeav today she is looking for around 9000 for the gals on Friday.

    • OSU WBB will be a tough out playing at home. IF they can keep the TO’s manageable-say no more than 10-12–and shoot decently then I think they have a chance at a narrow margin win. But, turn it over 20 times, they’re done. The Oregon team is too stacked with talent to get away with giving them a bunch of extra possessions. This Beav team seems a player short on the offensive side imo. Someone besides Gulich and Pivec to be there on O every game. I think they’re likely to get throttled in Eugene Sunday.

RealTime RPI has Oregon an 8 pt. favorite with a 63% chance of a win. They have Oregon a 24 pt favorite in Eugene, with an 85% win probably, fwiw.

  12. Winner winner chicken dinner

Team is reminding me of the first year of Tinkle. Defense just grinds away at the opponents. The difference this year is that they are a lot more talented on offense. But really do need to cut down on the 3 point attempts or at least take better looks. Some of those 3 attempts were just awful.

Just might be able to finish around .500 this year. Would be good for NIT which would be great.

Bench guys need to contribute more. Only 8 points from the bench but only 2 turnovers so that’s good.

Kone looks like he’s filled out. Feel like Hollins could get more pt and spell some of the starters. Stacy shouldn’t be playing, he hasn’t improved from last year.

      • I hope I’m wrong but the RPI might be too high even if the Beavers win some away games this year for them to make it to the big dance

        • Yup…..

As of right now the Beavs sit around 150 in the RPI. PAC has the 6th ranked rpi of all the conferences and only 3 teams in the Top 50. A win over usc Saturday would do wonders as they are 42nd. That said, the PAC is probably down this year and everyone is going to beat up on each other. That won’t help rpi. i will be surprised if the regular season conference champion has fewer than 6 losses. Beavs are probably an NIT team at best

      • Agree. Will be tough at home, but they got to pick up a couple on the road somehow. When I was at OSU, UCLA was THE game to be at and Gill was absolutely jammed to the rafters. I think then it sat 10,300? A tad over 5,000 for this game. Different times…

    • Happy for the win. Man was that part ugly where Ethan was the only starter in though. The bench needs to up their game. Berger really adds a lot to the team. These post game guys are saying UCLA is a tourney team? They looked like a shit show tonight.

      • I think Stacy plays harder than some of the more talented guys out there, unfortunately he can’t shoot. That being said in the UCLA game, Eubanks, being the clueless player that he is, passed the ball back to Stacy a couple of times with under five seconds on the shot clock when he should have just elevated and shot the ball himself. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but to my eyes, Stacy has improved a little this season.

  13. All our eggs in on the Colletto basket at this point? Any grad transfers or other JUCO QB like Lindsey Scott still in the mix Nice Beaver?

    • Disagree.
The Patriots are going to win it all, which sucks.
The Packers would have won the NFC (which would have sucked) if Rodgers didn’t get hurt..
But both are true nonetheless. If you want, we can go through the Super Bowl winners in the last generation and see how many non-elite QBs have won it. Probably, like, 5 out of 30 times.
      Dilfer
      Redskins
      Hostetler
      Johnson

      • I’d put Eli Manning in there too. If he’s “elite” he’s about the most boring, unwatchable elite QB in NFL history IMO, which would be a unique distinction.

      • I dunno that the Pats are a lock. I think I’d actually take the field over the Pats but I do agree the Pats are the favorite. The only thing that ever gets to Tom is when a team can get substantial pressure with a 4 man rush. When you start blitzing him he picks you apart but get a blitz like pressure with a 4 man front and he struggles as any QB would. Go back and watch that Miami loss, he was never able to step into the throws in that game and he doesn’t have quite the same ability to delivery against his momentum like he once could.

  14. We’ve discussed Mike Parker a number of times, what do you all think of Ron Callan? I enjoy his calls of the WBB games.
He sung the Canadian National Anthem for Ruth’s senior day and says he is working with Marie’s dad on a duet of the German NA for her senior day.

Hey, angry, are you planning a new thread for the WBB Civil War?

Here is Callan with Taya after the Arizona blow out:
    https://youtu.be/vSA7uWeDziI

  15. Wbb keys tonight – defense. Hold Oregon under 40% and keep turnovers under 15, they’ll have a good shot.

Take a page out of the men’s book and grind down the other team on defense.

    • Kelly Graves, who hasn’t whipped the Beavs since he got to nikegon, says this of the Beavs offense:
“If we let them play horse where they can just catch and shoot, then we’re in trouble because they’re going to make them.”

  16. McWilliams makes the defensive adjustment late in the first. let the ducks pull up in the lane for a jumper and block from behind. instead of doubling the driver and letting them pass to the post for an easy layup.

  17. OSU women 7/7 on threes through one. UO completely conceding the long distance shots. Everybody but Gülich has a three. No subs yet for OSU.

  18. No defense in the first q. Need to up that defense to win this game.

Getting a lot of luck on the 3 point attempts. Won’t last all game. Need to attack the basket for higher percentage shots.

  19. Odds on Scott picking up a T in the second half? I think he is getting close, said of Sabrina, “we’re fouling her I guess”

Two bigs with 2 PF for the ucks, any chance we get at least one of them to foul out?

Beavs up by 6 at the half, got to get some shots from inside and STAY (or become) AGGRESSIVE!

LINDSAY ALERT……..CALLAN GONNA SPEAK WITH HER DURING THE HALF (if he can get the donuts out of her mouth)

  20. 71-74 Beavers with 13.7 to play and the refs are review a foul they change the foul from a charge on the Ducks to a block send the ducks to the line Ducks make one 72-74 Beavers with 12.1 to play

      • It was not a charge, but it was not a block either. Gulich did not jump and went straight up. The officials we’re stuck in having to make a call on the review. Their body language to me showed that they knew on the review that there was not a correct call that could be made as they already whistled it dead.

        • If I understand correctly all they could review was whether Gulich’s feet were in or out of the circle and one foot was clearly outside, so they could reverse the call. Otherwise, the call would not be reversible.

  21. I’m happy that the WBB team won because they sure screwed up the last play in regulation by letting Ionescu shot a three. It didn’t have to be. Not sure if they just couldn’t execute Rueck’s directions or they didn’t know what to do. Foul anybody out there and then foul them again.

    • Yep, exactly right. I was at the game and told my buddy before the shot, to foul her and only give up 2 FTs and there’s just seconds left on the clock….another mental mistake that could have cost the Beavs the game in OT.

      • I was screaming at the television because it was one of those rare scenarios where one team could literally not let the other team shoot a three to tie the game.. They had the right idea with the first quick foul, but then they could have kept fouling, but instead they just let Ionescu do her thing. I believe they could have called out to the refs that they were gong to foul and they could have even fouled someone besides Ionescu. It was odd because they knew to foul the first time. Would have liked to have heard Rueck questioned on that. It was not smart basketball.

  22. That was an all time classic game in osu history regardless of sport.

Heroics on both sides. Sabrina is the real deal.

McWilliams with the dagger. Nice to have a 5 star recruit basically the #5 option on the floor. This is why rueck will have the team rolling for years.

  23. Just left Gill ….. what an effing rush. The decibels in that place were incredible. Kat Tudor was freaking amazing and ionescu still looks like a dude but a great player. Officiating sucked as we were sitting right at floor level and the refs let the ducks get away with a lot of physical play….gulich is amazing…..what an effing rush!

    • What is your guess on the attendance?
Reported attendance was 6704, Rueck says someone should lose their job for that inaccurate count.

      • I was guessing around 8,500 no way was it only 6,704. The place was filled except for some seats up in the highest rafter areas of Gill. Had to be 8,500 or so. I was at the UCLA game last night and they said attendance was about 5,500 or so….there’s just no way the game tonight was under 8,000 fans…

    • Gulich is really, really good with her left hand. It sure makes her tough around the basket

Great shooting by Tudor. Some of those shots were pretty well defended too. I don’t know about living like that but it worked this night at least. Great win, wish I could have been in Gill.

    • I’ve always been a “Running” Ann Schatz fan, but my god she was a duck homer tonight. The whole broadcast was a giant Sabrina Ionescu commercial. Ann Schatz comparing Ionescu’s 3 to force overtime to Jordan’s shot over Ehlo…….give me a fucking break…

      • You should have heard her yesterday on the Joe Beaver show with Mike Parker. She made it sound like the Ducks winning was just a formality. The way she talked about Ionescu gave me the impression she had a woody for her. Given the fact that Ionescu looks like a dude anyway, maybe Schotz likes her women with low hanging fruit….

        • Analysts/announcers for OSU games usually sound as though Beavs losing is “just a formality. ” The creeps announcing the men’s game on Thursday night (including Gottlieb’s brother) could barely hide their disappointment that the Beavs won. Their love child was Aaron Hill and his pedigree. They would then go on about the well-known basketball academies attended by UCLA players. It’s the sortof talk you hear in England about school ties. When UCLA fell behind, not a word about OSU, just what UCLA should do to regain the lead.

  24. Fun stat of the game,

Oregon bench – 18 min and zero points
OSU bench – 15 min and zero points

Which teams starters will have any gas left on Sunday?

    • Another fun stat: 13 total TO’s and Katie only had 2, while Mikayla finished with 3.
Got to avoid the trap in corner/sideline Sunday.

      • Beavs were horrible trying to defend the pick and roll. The off ball defender has to learn to jump out on the screen and push the player with the ball in her hands backwards. The Ducks jumped out on the pick and roll and pushed the Beaver ball handler backwards all night long. It’s a simple play to defend but it’s up to the coaching staff to teach them how to defend it. Ducks were great at it all night long, but the Beavs couldn’t figure out the simple strategy on how to defend against it. Better figure it out before Sunday.

        • I felt like the Beavs dodged a bullet, the Quacks sure missed a lot of wide open mid-range shots throughout the course of the game. They may not miss as many on their home court. The Ducks could get that shot almost anytime they wanted.

        • It isn’t that simple. Ionescu probably the best guard in the country and is probably more of a slasher than shooter, but good at both. When a post is the off ball defender Ionescu more than likely doesn’t hesitate backwards but goes right at the hoop. Bottom line they did enough for a win

          • If you recognize the pick and roll early on like the ducks defense did you can push the ball handler out of position but the off the ball defender has to jump out on the ball.and do it immediately….it can be effectively defended if recognized early and the defenders react quickly…ducks used that play over and over and beavs never adjusted…you have to defend that play with some physical awareness and aggressiveness and not be passive..

Ducks defense aggressively defended it and forced the beavers to react passively….

        • The pick n roll is the focal point of most NBA offenses because it is absolutely NOT simple to defend. Especially if you have a dynamic guard

          • I’m not talking about the NBA…that’s an entirely different matter where you have amazing athletes with amazing skill sets and length. Trying to compare defending the pick and roll in WBB in college to the NBA….well, that’s UnBeaverable and Totally RiDuckulous comparisons.

  25. Be interesting to see how Rueck adjusts Sunday (hopefully smarter at end of game if close), and seeing the team’s energy and attitude.

    • Yes, very interested to see adjustments; not only schematically, but in the lineup and use of the bench.
Graves pregame remark seemed only half true on Friday, hope that part about “…they’re going to make them (shots)” remains valid Sunday.

      • This, from the Red Guard paper down in Jack’s neighborhood:
“I’ll give you our game plan. I’ll go ahead and publish it if you want,” frustrated Oregon coach Kelly Graves said after falling to 0-7 in Civil War games. “We said don’t let them make threes, make them make twos. Well, they made 13 threes tonight.”

        • You should have seen their article about the Vet School donation. They were rolling along with a nice story about a great thing, and they had to drop a paragraph about Nikegon and Daddy Phil in the middle of it.

          It just pissed me off.

  26. Wow. Great win. Watched via DVR this morning. Tudor was out of her mind. Too bad she clanked the one FT at the end of regulation.
Allowing Sabrina to shoot at the end was really bad. Foul as soon as the ball is touched. She can pretty much get to any spot on the floor and get a shot whenever she wants. She really knows how to use the bounce pass in traffic. Imagine her feeding Gulich? What might have been.
Marie is really awesome this year. She makes really difficult catches and has the footwork for post play down pat. Drew and Big G should take notes.
I wish they would attack the basket when they break pressure. No way they shoot that well Sunday.
The huge Polish girl reminds me of a female Mark Eaton. Has the same 1/2 inch vertical.
    Go Beavs…………….and FTD!

    • I hate taking advantage of injury, but we’re lucky that Bando is out.

Don’t compare the men’s and women’s game. If I did that, I would never watch a women’s game.

      • I thought same thing too about women’s game until I actually started going to game in person. In my opinion, the women’s game at much more entertaining to watch than the men. Certainly the men are more athletic but in terms of actual crowd involvement and excitement, women’s game hands down is better given a choice I would rather watch beavers women play than men…if you haven’t been to.gill to.watch the.women, you’re missing out on quite an exciting atmosphere….mens game.isn’t even close in terms.of.excitement.

        • Yeah I prefer watching the women, mainly because they play real, team basketball and execution is almost always flawless. I’ll watch any team or person who does that. Lifelong Jets fan, and I still love Tom Brady because of his execution. Admired Chip Kelly for the same reasons. It’s just enjoyable to watch efficiency and execution done right. Women do have some extra energy and buzz, too, for whatever reason. My guess is because they win, and therefore people follow them more and know their personalities. Plus, guys like Eubanks soured fans when he lashed out at them about the draft, etc. Just not likeable for those reasons, whereas the girls are.

Missed the game. I hope to find a replay somewhere.

          • In a way like US Womens Soccer (Nat. Team) vs. Men’s.

High level of play, consistent performance on global stage; understandable why people enjoy watching them, even though arguably it’s just “soccer” (football).

Yet Men’s game still draws more revenue… =\

          • Plus there is actual team chemistry and continuity because women don’t jump early to the pro game. All the one and dones on MBB have affected the quality and likability of the game. I wouldn’t say the women’s games are flawless but they certainly play the game better stylistically than most mens teams do IMO. Plus, some of those women are pretty hot looking too….

        • I understand the interaction of the crowd. Gymnastics crowds are great too. But let’s not get carried away with the “perfect execution” and “Drew should take note” crap. It’s a completely different game that is just so slow.

          • I will agree with your comment about perfect execution. But overall, better team work on the floor, more chemistry and I think in many cases the women are better pure shooters than men are….all the one and dones in MBB have really affected the overall quality of the game..some great talented players that can’t play a team game….for example the men’s duck team..no chemistry but lots of potential talent. I will say this, I think if drew comes back next year, I think beavs have a shot at the conference title…Beavs men do play exception defense but lack consistent perimeter shooters whereas the lady beavs are deadly from the three point range and gulich is a very polished low post player…..both are lacking with mens team.

          • That’s because the speed and strength of the men’s game is that much faster and stronger. If the women had to play with a regulation ball and against D1 men, none of your praise for them would be true. It’s a completely different game, and we should just leave it at that.

It’s fine to point out teamwork. That is something apparent against like competition within their sport as well as true across all team sports.

          • “Women are better pure shooters” let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. They’re using a smaller lighter ball. Just as an FYI. That 1″ makes the bucket a lot bigger.

The gals might be fundamentally more sound, but the speed of the game is sooo much slower. They’re minds are obviously just as fast (if not quicker) but they have so much more time to make the decision and execute.

      • I’m not so sure bando would have made a big difference. After all, McGuire plays much better defense than Bando, has a very nice perimeter shot, better rebounder…bando is a one trick pony….a very good one but not nearly as versatile as McGuire is. McGuire made things tough for gulich in the first half as Heimlich had to work hard for everything she got….I think bando is a difference maker at knight arena but not at gill…..

          • Jack, I know they play different positions….however, McGuire replaced Bando in the lineup obviously at a different position and played very well defensively and hits some nice perimeter shots. IMO, she was also the most physical player out on the floor based on what I saw sitting court side at the game. Plus, McGuire is a former starter for the Ducks so they might have lost the 3 pointer option w/out Bando but McGuire made up for that loss with tough interior defense, rebounding as well as scoring 10 points. Finally, Bando has not played well against the Beavers so all in all, I’m not sure Bando would have moved the needle in the other direction. Had Bando played instead of McGuire, that would have opened things up in the post for Gulich and the Ducks would have had much more difficulty defending her in the low post.

        • The mid-range jumper in the men’s game is something that’s sort of a lost art. There’s too much emphasis on the 3 pointer and dunking (just like in the NBA). I’ve watched a lot of basketball, both men’s and women’s, and I think many of the women are better shooters than men because women lack the athleticism of the guys for the most part and tend to practice more shooting the mid-range shots than the guys do. Sure, it’s a smaller and lighter ball, but they still have to put it in the hole plus the range of some of these women players rivals the men. I know it’s different brand of basketball than the guys in terms of the speed and athletic ability, but the women are highly skilled, solid ball handlers, very efficient and solid distributors and more fun to watch than the men.

I was at the OSU-UCLA men’s game and while that was somewhat entertaining, it wasn’t even close to the level of excitement of OSU-ASU or OSU-Ducks games. If given the choice, I will watch OSU women’s over the men’s game any day of the week…personal preference….plus some of these women are damned good looking too.

          • It’s a completely different game. The women get to play on a floor where there is space, and they only have to go to those spaces to defeat anything resembling a vertical challenge. Just making them play with a regulation ball would make you as a fan scratch your head at how different the play is.

            Just stop.

          • Like I said, I know the women’s game is different than the man’s brand of basketball. Don’t get your panties all in a bunch because someone has an entirely different viewpoint. If you think the men’s game is better, well, you’re entitled to your opinion. You know what they say, opinions are like a-holes, everyone’s got one. If you don’t enjoy the women’s game, that’s fine by me, but I will continue to post my opinion whether you happen to like it or not.

          • Wow, you just can’t let go of this.

Did I say one or the other was better, or did I say they were completely different?

They are completely different. It’s not an opinion. What happens on the floor of a women’s game is vastly different than what happens on the floor of a men’s game. They use different equipment. The clock is different. And there’s so much space to play compared to the men’s game.

            Just knock it off.

    • There is a general lack of vertical in the women’s game. I keep hoping it will evolve as has the athleticism of the game overall. It will be interesting to see if Rueck can coach Grymek in the mold of Hamblin and Gulich. Much as I complain about the announcers having a lovefest with Ionescu, they did the same thing last year with Sydney Weise.

  27. We were in a Phoenix area sports bar last night with another couple. The WBB game is on one of five big screens. Suddenly, mid-fourth quarter, it gets switched to an NBA game. About half the room erupted with a “what the hell?” Bartender quickly switched it back with a sheepish… “sorry.” Best WBB game I have ever seen, well it’s actually the only one I’ve seen in its entirety.

Rematch on Sunday will be interesting… they are pretty much dead even without Oregon’s ace three-point shooter (Blando?) sitting it out last night. What is her status? Also… can Tudor repeat that insane performance. Stay tuned!

    • Bando out for Sunday as she’s on crutches. Tudor is the best three point shooter in the conference maybe not % wise because bando doesn’t take as many attempts but Tudor has better range, much quicker release and has added driving to the hoop to her game too..she’s a better defender too. She has had some monster games this year too.

    • “…can Tudor repeat that insane performance”? Last night made two in a row. It’s a lot to ask to get another Sunday. Katie also had a nice game and may be more likely to score big Sunday, she sure seems to have improved her ball handling, good to see.

As already said, Bando is out indef, stress fracture was the report on Beavs Radio yesterday.

EDIT/ADD: Here is Kat post-game with Ron Callan:
      https://youtu.be/SKLZj7HZfa8

  28. PS: Forgot to mention. Fell into a “neat deal” here in AZ. The Giants have spring training here starting next month. They take a number of people with spare time…err retirees and use them as ushers at their games.

You get; free parking, concession coupon for lunch and a shady spot to watch the game when it starts. Basically show people to their seats and answer a few easy questions, where are the bathrooms? etc. Security does the heavy lifting if spring breakers have a few too many. Should be interesting.

If any of you find yourselves down here, say “Hi,” Easy to find me with trademark goofy glasses.

  29. Hearing there might be a large group of about 5 Florida guys coming in for official visits together just prior to signing day. Still trying to gather all of the names and nothing is set in stone yet.

    • While that would be interesting. Seems like they are doing quite of bit of national recruiting which is counter to JS’s claims that they’d focus on the west coast. I am assuming they are playing to the strengths of the coaches they’ve hired with midwest ties that were probably recruiting Florida/Texas heavily prior to coming to OSU.

Wonder if they will have these guys try to keep those pipelines open or ask them to focus more heavily on California in future years.

    • Who’s recruiting all these kids without Telly on board?

Think it’s the players we have convincing friends to come take a look? “We need immediate help. Don’t go ride the pine for 2 years, come here now and help us turn this around” kinda thing?

      • I have the list of names now. Not really a group you would expect to have an instant chance to take up some scholarship spots upon first glance. Still waiting on more info. I wouldnt get to excited just yet. I think thry’re mostly Telly guys who still have a connection to our recruiting staff. Will have more for you when i can

        • When you say don’t get excited, sdo you mean these recruits aren’t highly regarded?

I’m hoping for some of these JC D lineman and at least one of these 4* WR…Audette looks like he could be a good NY for the 3-4.

  30. Not one JS commit yet. Really hope these guys can recruit or find the diamonds in the rough-just a little concerned about the lack of activity. They really need to go nationally to recruit. Seems like WSU has been pretty successful getting the California players.

    • Irish was a Smith recruit, but i understand the concern. I thought we’d have a verbal pledge yesterday but hasnt happened yet, for whatever reason. Also, think at least 2 of the recent lineman visitors will be Beavs. By my count, we’re down to only 11 spots remaining at most, and that could decrease if any walkons get converted to scholarship or if they get any grad transfers to come in.
The footprint is definitely national though

    • You won’t see many verbal commitments in January because it makes more sense to just wait until Signing Day to decide at this point

  31. How awesome is it that the quacks are having their best year in a long time, while we’re having our worst… and we STILL beat them :)

Way to go, gals! Encore tomorrow, please!

    • Beavs are 14-4 and 5-2 so I wouldn’t consider that their “worst” season in recent memory. Still, the Ducks were 8-9 point favorites and ranked #7 and folded in OT. They can use that lame a$$ excuse about Bando not playing, but McGuire is a former starter for the Ducks and was probably the most physical player on the floor and gave Gulich fits in the 1st half. I expect Ducks to win tomorrow but if they do, at least the streak wasn’t broken at Gill.

Ducks have a great team and a great coach and this is somewhat of a transition year for the Beavs due to the loss of 4 key players to last season’s team. So, it was a great win for the Beavs and I couldn’t be happier that Katie Mac hit that 3 pointer and FT to ice the game.

      • Different positions means they bring different dynamics to their line-ups. You’re comparing a senior guard, who is a facilitator and a floor leader, with a pretty raw soph big, and then you go on to talk about Marie.

        ?

Bando is a helluva lot better defender than McGuire for her value on the floor. She has a tight handle which allows Ionescu to move and shed defenders off ball. And she’s always a pain in the ass on transition, O or D. Being all that, she’s also their heat check.

But you go ahead and compare her to a reserve big who is only in because she has starting experience from last year… and Bando is out.

You can’t say OSU wouldn’t have won if Bando were healthy, but Nikegon’s rotation would have been one deeper. Their starters logged a lot of minutes, and it showed in the end.

  32. There is a general lack of vertical in the women’s game.

  33. Oregon doesn’t draw big crowds for their women’s games. Might even be a 50/50 split.

Beav fans could take away much of that home court advantage.

    • A 50/50 crowd doesn’t chnge the home-cooking from the refs in favor of ducks. I noticed that there was zero coverage of the game on espn highlights. You have to go searching for it and the PAC12 network locks anything they televise, which closes their availability even more. Such poor marketing strategy by Pac12 and the tv network. Probably works fine for the suits so they don’t have continual exposure for how poorly most conference umpires, officials, referess are for each game. Best keep[ it all in the dark in order to fix the desired outcome for the powers that be…Ionescu apparently is the greatest womens player since Cheryl Miller by all of the borderline calls she gets.

Beavs will lose by 15 just based on refs effecting the game. If Ducks are allowed to bump and hack Beavs ball handlers, game over before it starts.

      • I agree that the Ducks were allowed to play a very physical game and there were several missed calls. Pac12 officiating is just not very good and Ionescu got some very favorable calls too. Most of the time when she’s dribbling, it looks like she’s carrying the ball and that’s never called. There were some traveling calls missed too. I watched my recording of the game after I got home from Gill and there’s certain things you just can’t pick up on TV that you can see sitting court side. Personally, I think there’s a bias with Ionescu and the Ducks and the media tends to slobber all over them, but I’m not sure they are as good in terms of depth and some of their front line players as their ranking suggests.

OSU, on the other hand, lost lots of talent off last year’s team (Wiese, Gabby, Orum, Brown) and to beat a Duck team that returned everyone from last year’s team speaks highly of the Beavs. The only thing the Beavs really lack is a true point guard but Slocum will fill that void next year with a talented incoming players to surround her.

Transition year for the Beavs, but last night’s win could really be a confidence boost for the rest of the season….we shall see…

  34. From the tweets of Trevor Romaine.

“Sucks getting screwed over by Gary Andersen and his staff and now they aren’t even there.”

  35. At the rate Eubanks is playing I’m not sure if he’s ever going to be “NBA ready”. Team went on another run with him off the court to finish the half down by two. He has perfected the “deer in the headlight” move every time he is double-teamed.

    • He’s always sucked and always will. Has a few great games here and there to tease.
We need one of those great big/white bigs that schools like Gonzaga and St. Marys always seem to get. Those guys are unstoppable. Eubanks is a wannabe of that type of player.

        • I feel the problem is he’s stupid and uncoordinated. That’s why nobody can really coach him up. Those are problems you can’t fix.

He’s not the worst player I’ve ever seen, but he should be a backup P-12 C.

Berger is heady and solid. Was he the local 3-star guy? Forget where he came from.

          • It’s National Hug Day, and I guess you’re just craving one?

Classroom IQ and basketball IQ are totally different things. There is usually correlation, but sometimes there isn’t. He’s dumb on the court.

Eubanks with a 3.0 in “University Exploratory Studies” doens’t scream “genius”, nor does his court play, which is the topic at hand. Those nuanced conversations!

          • So nuanced that all I said is “stupid” is probably unfair. You shoot back with his major doesn’t scream “Genius”.

Maybe he’s somewhere in between. Or maybe you’re an ass for calling a kid who’s game you don’t like “stupid”.

          • Okay, little mind.

Ho do you think PC will handle the wart known to all, Luke?

Here’s your chance to provide actual info or opinion or analysis or anything that you have NEVER contributed to this site.

It’s going to be circumstantial at best, so you don’t have to fear labels of stupidity as youhave in the past… because all you do is nuh-uh everything with dumb non-logic. What you can do here is lay out a decent path for PC to handle the PR of Luke killing everyone and the team being behind him.

I doubt you have it in you. But here’s your chance.

          • I’m not really sure what you’re asking. He’ll start. Probably the first game. Are you suggesting Casey only plays him at home or something like that? No, he’ll be in the normal weekend rotation. Anyone who has an issue with it isn’t close to the program, and PC couldn’t care less what those people think.

          • That’s what I’m saying. There’s nothing deep to offer as far as coach Casey goes. He’ll treat Heimlich the same as all his other pitchers

    • Can you explain to me what their plan is on those double teams? I don’t see any movement when the double teams happen. Somebody should be open but I never seen anybody open or cutting to the basket. what is the play when he gets double-teamed?

      • There’s a huge issue with Tinks’ O, and that’s that there really isn’t one. The spacing is either horrible, or his players don’t try hard enough to have any spacing.

    • “Refs help out a bit….”

What an understatement! The refs completely changed how they were officiating after the call from Pac-12 headquarters at halftime. I was at the game sitting on the base line. The refs let USC beat the crap out of Beavs the entire second half and called nothing on them.

It was horrible! Where do they get these guys?

  36. Do people think the Thompson brothers are good? They hit shots once in a while but they can’t pass. Can’t dribble. DEFINITELY don’t play defense. But because they hit a tough shot once in a while they get a long leash.

Watching them get blown by this game, and fail at breaking the press, and missing FTs…you’re GUARDS, you’re missing free throws???? Jesus.

  37. Also these refs calling ticky-tack bullshit on us as usual. Eubanks fouls out by tipping a rebound while barely touching another player.

  38. Enfield got T’d up just as the half was ending and then got a gift make-up call as the halfended. Then they go intot he 2nd half with the refs looking for fouls to keep everything even. USC tried to gift the game by missing their 1st 12 shots in the 2nd half, but by the time they woke up, half the beavs were in foul trouble, Eubanks was out, Thompson’s couldn’t handle the aggressive man to man and game over.

Tinkle needs to learn to pick his spots and flip his lid to counterract Enfield or Hurley or Krystowiak or Miller or Alford or any other bully coach who tries to either intimidate or whine to the refs. Tinkle needed to go nuts to point of forcing a tech when Berger got pushed and fouled then goaded by the USC goon. That turned the game and USC decided they didn’t have to worry about the refs anymore, just play physical. Metu has been getting every call and Eubanks couldn’t get out of his own way. Big G should be shooting about 1000 lay-ups/day with guys pushing and slapping at him. How does he miss so many lay-ups?

    • USC shoots 22 fouls shots on Beavs home court in 2nd half? Yes the beavs coughed up a big 13 pt lead in about 4 minutes of action, but there was no way the refs would let them win that one. USC needs to be in the top 25 for the conference to have 4 teams in the dance. Metu is overrated and gets way too many gift calls.

Enfield endured a few years of ridicule and now is becoming one of the conference coaching darlings. Was it USC, Oregon, Arizona that were named in that FBI report? Not surprising…just don’t get caught and act like you deserve to get all of the breaks. NCAA sports at its best.

  39. Can’t give up an 18-0 run on your home court. Refs didn’t help, but really shitty execution in the second half. Eubanks is becoming worthless, he makes one or two “athletic” plays a game and the announcers shit their pants. They never comment about his poor positioning or inability to pass. Can’t Big G just dunk it? The dude has missed at least 15 point blank put backs this season. I’m tired of Stevie missing free throws. WTF? 68% shooter. Looks like its going to be yes or no to the CBI again.

  40. OSU badly needs a true point guard that can break ankles. I don’t care if he can shoot, I just want someone who is a threat to drive to the hoop each time and be able to execute a pick and roll.

Stephen is improving IMO, but he lacks quickness and has to rely on sprinting past the defender.

  41. My wife’s a dukie, so I end up watching alot of duke basketball. Today, they ended up getting the commitment of the #3 ranked player in the country, Zion Williamson. If you haven’t seen him before, google his highlights. Kid was doing dunks as a hs junior that rival some of the all time best NBA dunks.
And poor duke added him to a class that already had the #2 and #1 ranked players this year. It’s completely ridiculous.

    • I wonder if Coach K is going to teach ZW to pass, shoot outside five feet, use his right hand, play on-ball D and pass.

      At least he can dunk.

He kinda reminds me of a smaller Julius Randle.

  42. Something I think we can all agree on?

The men’s hoops team’s largest margin of defeat this year? 9 points. Twice, vs Wyoming and Arizona. At least they have been in every game so far.

  43. OT why not move Mason Moran back to QB and develop him into a decent passer? Aside from his speed, he appears to put the ball right where it needs to be judging from his high school highlights. If Smith is going to run a multiple O, he might as well utilize his talent.

I know he looked bad in the Civil War, but almost any QB under McGivinup’s playcalling was destined to fail.

  44. FOUR HOURS till the re-match in Eugene. Lots of things to watch for in this one; similarities and differences from Friday’s scheme and use of line-up.

Here’s a quote from Graves on strategy last Friday:
“I think I did a poor job of making the game too predictable down the stretch,” Graves said of the reliance on Ionescu and Hebard to match the clutch performances of Tudor and Gulich. “Well, so did they. We both go to our bread and butter late.”

Who will be the bread and butter today?

    GO BEAVS!
BTW, this game and all remaining regular season games for the gals are set to be broadcast on PAC12 net

  45. BWB’s getting smoked with some help from the refs and some terrible coaching by Rueck.
Break the press and then pull the ball out so the quacks can reset their D.

    • There are ways to do that. I see nothing in our coach in the way of enforcing the details.

The refs don’t see it either.

A coach who knows the rules knows how to game the refs. He will walk up to the refs before the game and say, “Hey, love what you do. Did you notice when you were watching tape on these guys that [#x] walks every time he touches the ball, and [#y] pushes off whenever he drives to the right?”

Details matter If I’m paid millions to coach a game, I think I’m on top of every detail there is.

    • Fuck Philly fans, they posted up outside the Vikings hotel and blared air horns all night.

I’m hoping locals in Minneapolis return the favor big time. Maybe call in a bomb threat.

  46. Ok now’s the time to seriously look at the direction of this wbb program. Has been the only major sport keeping us relevant. Now what?

Wish more people outside of Corvallis cared about baseball. This Riley part 3 thing in football is sad and pathetic but might work? At least better than weird GA? Hard to imagine they could be worse than the past few years.

Still waiting for a sport that means something to win something meaningful.

    • Direction of WBB? As much as I agree with beavergopher’s comment above about the poor decisions in this game when they broke the uck press, I think Rueck’s record indicates WBB is in good hands. They are coming off of three straight PAC12 Championships and have more than one good player coming next year to replace (really to make up for) Gulich. I’m not worried about the future.

      Glad you mentioned baseball.

Yeah, I’m waiting for some football bowls.

      • 3 great impact players coming in next season and one of them is already on the team (Destiny Slocum). Biggest issue with this year’s team is lack of a true PG…..sounds kind of familiar, i.e. men’s basketball. Anyway, Destiny Slocum is a great addition and will take that role and make the Beavs very solid next year. That plus the 6’8″ center from NJ and incoming player from Australia….yes, the future looks great. This is a transition year and we’ll probably finish 5th in the conference but this is a very young and talented team that will only improve next season.

        • I think Gulich’s graduation is going to leave a huge hole on this team and it remains to be seen if anyone is going to fill it. Too bad she didn’t really have someone coming in behind her like she did with Hamblin. The guard position looks solid for next year.

          • Gulich will be a huge loss. They don’t have a tough rebounder at the 4 like they have had the past few years. Next year they will be really inexperienced at the 4-5 position. With all the guard depth you would think they would play up tempo, but Rueck seems to do what he does. It backfired yesterday. Unfortunately, it seems the quacks have now matched or exceeded us in the talent dept.
The way the announcers were slobbering over the quacks was nauseating and the refs let them mug our gals. Scott should have taken a T in the second quarter, before the game got out of hand.

  47. OT – what are people here using now for web browsers and ad blocking software?

I saw some comments somewhere several threads back but didn’t find them in a search.

    Recommendations?

    • Cooks also had two huge PI calls that gained some big chunks of yardage. I will say the 2nd PI call was a little iffy. He did have a big drop too. Glad to see that didn’t come back to bite him in the butt.

  48. Pros and cons of Gill? Kevin O’Connell during the men’s game said it was hard to play there because it was dark and dingy and “hadn’t been painted in four years.”

      • Further up the thread someone said Luton might be medically Retiring.

So our best options are actually Mason Moran or Aiden Willard. Not sure if Connor Blount is still around?

        • I never actually spent the time to fully contemplate our QB situation until I just read your post. For some reason, that really made it hit home. Holy motherfuck, we are so screwed. Like, ten miles up shit creek with no paddle, no boat, and no waders.

          • You just realized we have no QB?
We haven’t had one (other than the guys GA ran off) since 2013, and there is nothing promising on the horizon. It’s why Petras was a huge deal, despite some bozos on Twitter saying “no big deal/do we reallywant him?” etc. All these misses are huge deals.

          • Even more concerning than losing Petras is we can’t even sign the backup plan QBs, and these have all been guys who had zero offers from teams for the early signing period.
Losing out to UTSA, Mizzou and probably Vandy next once Colletto visits there

          • I guess one thing I’d have to admit about ol Riles: he always had at least 2 QB’s on roster better then anything GA left us with.

Tuli Wily-Matagi Could end up being 3rd string lol

        • Nicebeaver: “A through J didn’t work out” Are potential recruits looking at the Ohio State pay for play game and thinking they don’t want that to be their first college game? Especially quarterbacks? Lambs to slaughter. Would OSU have to pay if they copped out?

  49. I wasn’t watching him a ton but I thought Remmers played a pretty good game at LG against a solid Philly interior. I don’t think he got called for a penalty and he was solid in pass protection. That position probably suits him better than on the edge where he gets exposed by faster pass rushers, and is next to the center so false starts are easier to avoid. I imagine with what they are paying him the plan on moving him back to OT but if Minny found a solid OT in the draft it could make for a pretty strong unit going into 2018. Add in a legit 3 down back in Cook (Murray is mediocre at best) with McKinnon as the change of pace and you could be looking at a pretty potent offense… QB dependent of course.

  50. Judging by Coach TMP’s tweet it seems you guys Beaver Recruiting twitter account is crossing into a strange situation where you’re actually impacting recruiting.

I’m sure the haters will continue to hate and this comment is slightly tongue and cheek but Nice: the athletic department might be wise to find a spot for you. It’s seems as a part time hobby you’re making as many if not more inroads then some of our previous coaches.

Just goes to show how lazy and out of touch a lot of coaches are. Social media is a juggernaught and they should really be putting more effort into it.

  51. I remember one play that he was downhill, even mentioned to the wife as “look, a beaver!”

Which works all too well with the “Dealer in Chief”

    • He says his reason for transferring is to be closer to family in N. Cali. Would it be crazy to take a. Grad transfer AND Colletto? Move Moran back to safety. Colletto has 4 to play 3. Redshirt him this year and let Luton be the second string.

      • You like Colletto a lot huh? He’ll need 10 redshirts to just be competent. Are you family or friends with him?

Several people here have hinted they heard Luton will be retiring.

I’ll have to watch film on the Hawaii guy tomorrow. His stats were pretty good, and N. Cal is close enough. We have coaches with Hawaii connections, too. It seems like a decent fit. Hope he’s good.

        • Didn’t say I liked Colletto, but it’s clear the beav coaches do. Glad you can break down film better than niner and Lindgren though. Maybe you’re in the wrong field man. Got to put that expertise out in the real world.

      • Colletto is a hell no. Dude can’t play QB.

The scary thing about Colletto is that any QB who comes in now is likely to see action soon. It would be a major disaster if Colletto is ever allowed to see the field.

  52. So where is all the hate for Colletto coming from? I haven’t seen film (anyone got some)? He was the state of Washington player of the year out of high school, wasn’t he? He went JC out of high school, now he’s listed at 6’3 220 dual threat… what am I missing?

    • Go full Pettibone.

Might as well have a pass, punt, kick and run event in the quad. Hell, we’re a Nike school. We might as well have a Sparq combine for students… turn some of them into student-athletes.

  53. Biggins has this guy visiting and a lock for OSU.
    https://247sports.com/player/jermar-jefferson-89983

Really nice tape. I also love his RG, #55.

He had a top 5 of Utah, CU, Rutgers, CSU and SJSU in October. It seemed like Rutgers was his favorite around Xmas.
    http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2017/12/california_3-star_sr_rb_jermar_jefferson_on_rutger.html

But plans change, I guess. What’s the read on him? Are academics a concern? Or does he see immediate opportunity here?

  54. It’s a start. GA really screwed him over. It added to my early grave suspicions about GA, big boy pants, love those kids, determined more than ever to make a go of it at OSU, personnel decisions, babble babble on interviews, red nose.

    • What’s a start?

He’s a practice player. He gets to make good money practicing a game for another year. I hope he’s stashing it in the bank for when Jax has to get rid of him after year two.

      • He has not even made the team yet. Odds are he doesn’t make the team. So honestly he is only getting paid any bonus (probably none) and CBA required per diem’s for offseason work which ain’t a whole lot. So in reality he isn’t gonna make much if any money since he is most likely nothing but camp fodder.

        • He made about $7k per week as a practice squad player, and he’ll continue to do so until March. Then he’ll make at least league minimum (slightly higher) for about five months until roster cuts bring the team back to 53. Then he has one more year he can be on the Jax practice squad.

He’ll walk away making somewhere around $800k over two years.

          That’s not exactly chump change.

          • I got that wrong.

Practice squads are only regular season structures. So he only made ~$120k this last year.

If he is paid until the beginning of the league’s fiscal year, it’s in bonus compensation.

          • He was a good looking RB in the time he got…I think he might impress people and get off that practice squad or sign on with another team in a better role after Jacksonville.

          • I think $800K is a little high for practice squad money?

I have a couple friends of friends who did the 2 year practice squad thing within the last 10 years and it was more in the $120k a year.

Nothing to scoff at. Great money for a kid fresh out of college to get paid to work out. If one has enough sense about them (take advantage of facilities and meals, live inexpensively, network, etc…) gives are really nice jump start on life after school.

          • Yeah… I tried to brute force the math.

In reality, pay is for OTA’s and voluntary minis on a per week basis. So add about two months at the minimum instead of five or six.

            That’s still another $70-80k.

          • You don’t get paid “the minimum” for OTA’s and camp. The “minimum” is only for the 17 weeks of the regular season.

OTA’s and camp are only paid per diems.About $800 a week if he is still considered a rookie. $1700 if he is now considered a veteran. But those are only for the weeks of training camp.

          • Got it.

So a couple months total at about $2k per week for a veteran.

How do they measure NFL experience? A player doesn’t have to be on the active roster to be considered a veteran, does he? If he remains a rookie in terms of per diem, that cuts pay by about 40%.

          • If he was never on an active roster (practice squad is not active roster) he is still considered a rookie for the purposes of the CBA.

  55. What GA lacked in QBs, he made up for in RBs. Nall, Pierce, Cook, Tyner…insane talent. Too bad the rest of the offense was so dysfunctional.

  56. Want to hear a weird story?

I bought a guitar last week to celebrate an occasion, and it turns out the seller is a major league ball player (an all star no less). He was super nice and refunded me partially for some shipping damage. Now have my two biggest passions of music and baseball in one item. My new #1 axe. Such long odds and a cool story.

  57. Now that Riley is here can we stop going up against Nebraska for every recruit please? It seemed like Riley would just watch who we offered (yeah he loves OSU soooo much and has soooo much integrity) and then offer them right after.

So fucking sick and tired of seeing GBR. Worse for me then GoUtes at this point.

  58. It’s possible that many of these guys who are looking at both us and NEB are only looking at us because they were originally being recruited by Riley at NEB. We’ll see which is more important, the school or the coach.

    • The guys we’re seeing who are being recruited by us and nebraska weren’t riley recruits for either school. I think the main reason we are battling with nebraska is mostly because both schools changed coaches late in the year and also need several players. Missouri is in on more of our recruits than Nebraska actually.
But Nebraska fans are more of a social media presence, so it feels like they’re everywhere
