OSU Dropping the Civil War Tag

I didn’t have time to make a thread yesterday, but this is definitely worthy of it’s own thread.

Since the topic is inherently a bit political, you can go there. Try to keep it on-topic, though, and not use this as a rant for/against things ruffling your feathers right now.

My take is that this is OSU caving to politics of the moment at the expense of a perfect game title that fans love and that means zilch in terms of anything the anti Civil War crowd argues. My understanding is the title came from many families having alums from both OSU and Oregon, so within that family there would be a spirited civil “war”. How on earth does that need to change? Again, that is weak-minded caving to politics of the moment. This is exactly how we wound up with you know who in office. People backlash against this type of crap, and that’s what I expect here — OSU is going to lose a lot of donors over this.

I got a lot of texts and emails of when the news came out. All alums and donors from both OSU and Oregon. Most were shocked that it happened but none were angry about it. In under an hour, everyone had moved on and was suggesting new names. Sure you’ll see commentary like this bashing the decision but there won’t be any large protest to restore the name.

I predict it has zero effect on donations. Not donating because of this would be just cutting off your nose to spite your face.

While the name is great, many no longer feel comfortable branding a sporting event with a name that’s shared with one of the defining Wars in this country’s history that saw hundreds of thousands of Americans deaths. Of course our use of the name is not intended to have a connection to the actual war, the fact of the matter is we live in the US thus the context of “Civil War” in this country (except to us Beavers & Ducks) is a war where the country was divided and we lost hundreds of thousands of Americans as a result. That’s a very simple concept. You may not like it, but everyone on here is smart enough to comprehend the concept. Now, you may not like it, but you surely understand. And if you’re someone who understands that it may be viewed as insensitive (at a minimum) to some people for us to refer to this game as a “war”, but it doesn’t bother you personally so you think it’s acceptable to throw a fit…that’s childish. Sounds like some of the key tenants of white make privilege. “It’s not how I like it so I’m gonna bitch and complain bc I deserve things to go my way”.

We get it, you guys hate it. But isn’t it easy to suck it up and still call it the Civil War in your Perosnal life, while allowing the people who feel like it’s insensitive to change the name out of respect for those who died in THE ACTUAL WAR? But that’s too much bc “your rights” are probably being infringed upon right? Probably the same crowd that doesn’t have an issue with the name Redskins.

Lastly, anybody in here actually been deployed and fought on the front lines of a war? Or done anything productive in a civil at war completion to help their team win? Or y’all just feel like this from the sideline but never put in an ounce of physical work for your country or athletic department? Don’t worry….I’ll wait…..

    • 16

Thousands of deaths that were fighting racism and won. Yeah it sucks people died, but is their a better example people Going to the extreme for something they believe in?
You mention the redskins above, how do you equate the redskins with using the generic term of civil war? Your essentially saying using the term civil war is racist which is so far from the truth its embarrassing.
And using the word war is insensitive? Lo fucking L. What other words hurt your feelings?

That war ended in 1865, not 1965. Those people are all long dead. I do not ever hear anyone bitching about the outcome of the war (the real war that is, not the football game) It’s a common term used all over the world.

This is all about being PC.

I’m still going to call it the Civil War, and I’m not going to donate to OSU.
OSU should have had a poll of all alums. At least be democratic about it. I’d be curious if the majority wanted this…my guess is no. A small but loud minority who has everyone on edge and questioning their sanity (“Am I a racist!?” etc) did this, and OSU caved to it. That’s fine, but there are prices to pay for this, such as that being the main reason we got Trump. I don’t know what the fallout of all this Civil War stuff, removing statues, etc will be, but I have a feeling there are many many millions who don’t like it one bit and are planning something. My guess would be more radical groups spring up, latent racism comes more to the forefront, etc. You can’t regulate away these issues and you can’t destroy a statue or change a name and think you’ve fixed the problem. These problems are only fixed one way, and that’s through experiences those people have that organically, through their own choices and experiences, change their mindsets. Total ignorance to think removing a statue or changing a name does anything but make a select group feel good for a few minutes, before they’re on to the next thing that won’t make any actual difference, and if anything just increases tension/rage in the other group, which actually decreases the odds of any real and organic change.

4 years USMC, not sure what the fuck that has to do with anything.

For blacks to act like the phrase Civil War is somehow injuring them in 2020 is pathetic. It’s actually quite the slap to the face to 360,000 Northern soldiers that died to give their ancestors freedom 150+ years ago. If anything those folks should be put on a pedestal and celebrated for their sacrifices. But it’s easier to piss and moan and act like a victim.

…it’s easier to piss and moan and act like a victim.
        Very true.

US Army, RVN ’68-69, not that it matters. But to answer the Beavers Bitch above, I’m pretty sure there are several here who also have “actually been deployed and fought on the front lines of a war”.

    • Holy shit that was stupid! A lot of incoherent ramblings like “has anyone ever been deployed or fought on the front ljnes” or the redskin reference. Everyone is now dumber thanks to reading your inflammatory comment.

You’re right. I don’t know anyone that honestly associated any racial connotation to the rivalry because of the name. IMO, if this is the route it’s going, you better go all the way. No mention of battles, war, etc as it’s too easy to link that back to the old name and wars can bring back painful memories and experiences for all types of people. Hope it doesn’t involve the Willamette as I don’t really want to listen to announcers botching the pronunciation during a broadcast…most can’t say “Oregon” correctly so let’s not complicate this any more than necessary. Platypus is lame, please don’t go there. Is there going to be any alumni/fan involvement in the change? Or is it just a select few that can make the choice to drop the rivalry and rename it? Be a huge missed opportunity if the universities didn’t embrace the populace in this rebranding. My vote is for the “Kumbaya Unity Sportsy Get Together” where keeping score and having a winner is entirely optional.

I can’t stand the knee jerk PC reaction to every element in today’s society to pander to people who are offended. The term Civil War is not exclusive to the U.S. Civil War but our leaders in Higher Education must have skipped History class that day. I honestly don’t care if they want to change the name but to just do it unilaterally with no input from students, alumni and the general public is over reaching. I’m sure that if we change the name to the Platypus Bowl PETA will be offended and demand a new name. It doesn’t stop.

Like Bill above, I didn’t like it this time yesterday. And by afternoon I had moved on. There are lots of things I haven’t liked that they don’t give us a say over (new Benny, new lettering styles, changing the 4th quarter song are just a few that come to mind quickly) but I didn’t stop paying for my tickets or showing up because of those things. But even more than that, and getting rid of the idea of the “politics of the moment” is the fact that current and former Black players back this change. Some will say why should they get their way. My life take has always been that the person/people who are injured by something have more of a say than the people who are merely irritated. So, while civil war is the perfect term (within a state/family and even “north/south”) I’m ok finding another perfect term. Because those players and alumni and other students and alumni of color matter more than me.

Agreed, it’s annoying because the basis for pulling it really isn’t accurate or even overly logical. That said I have stuff to do and it’s just the name for a sporting event that less than 200,000 people even care about. Off to fry bigger fish.

Also you are exactly right. Stuff like this can have a large effect on specific groups. Why not change something or act differently if it hurts others. I hear the same dried up arguement with gender identity, is it really so hard to say they/them if it makes someone feel better? Ohhh the inconvience!!

        • People who care more than casually yeah probably. Reser rarely breaks 40k and Autzen tops out at 54k. If we double that for fans that watch from home it’s less than 200k. If conference implications are in play then there’s probably many more with other fan bases. That’s all the basis I have. Most of the alumni I know from my class don’t care at all about OSU sports.

I’ve thought about it and I just can’t work up much energy for any position. Football is just a fucking game in the end. If the Beavs can kick Phil’s boy’s asses and send them back to Eugene losers, I don’t really care what it’s called. Then again, that might have to wait until 2020.

  7. 3
    9

I’m OK with changing it because I never really liked it in the first place. My own history and ancestry points to war being a terrible thing even when it’s necessary and you win. Football games are fun even when you lose sometimes. It never stopped me from watching it, though.

But, I’m finding it hard to find something that rolls off the tongue as easily. Three syllables, no abrupt changes in consonant sounds… I’m reasonably sure that colloquially it will be the Civil War for a while. I still refer to “Civic Stadium” and “The Rose Garden” when I talk to my friends.

  8. Many articulate and persuasive thoughts posted above. I would throw in that in periods of social change (and I think we’re in one) the pendulum often tends to swing too far before it settles back to a new stable norm that most people can live with. I think we’re seeing a bit of that now. In reality, the term Civil War AS APPLIED TO A FOOTBALL GAME IN OREGON has fuck all to do with race issues and the war that was fought essentially east of the Mississippi well over a century ago. Perhaps if one team showed up with the Confederate battle flag, it would be a different matter. Maybe we just call it the Oregon Civil War. (For the Civil War buffs I do understand that there were a few confederate states west of the Mississippi and some minor battles)

  9. 15
    1

Any new name these dipshits come up with will be just as stupid as removing Civil War was.

Just leave it. No other game on the schedule has a name. If this one having a name makes sandy vaginas then remove the name and move on.

  10. 10

Anyone that can think knows it’s just a game and has nothing to do with “the war”. They are just trying to make the snowflakes happy.

I have found most college admin’s are snowflake friendly.

  11. This just in. Disney has decided to follow Oregon/Oregon State’s lead.
Effective immediately, Captain America: Civil War will be renamed Captain America: The One With The Airport Battle.

    Ok, maybe not, but maybe?

    • They are changing splash mountain to make it PC. It will now be the princess and the frog which is perfect because New Orleans as we all know is in the mountains.

      • Splash Mountain’s story is inspired by plantation life, so I kindof get it. Plus the furry characters were due for a refurbishing anyway and it sounds like this plan was already in place before the George Floyd incidentplus it’s next to the New Orleans land, so the theme fits

I polled former and current OSU students on Instagram and 80% of us thought this name change was dumb. This was such a WTF moment. Is the mission of college to promote the views of the woke mob, that represents less than 10% of the general populace? I get the impression that all athletes are part of the woke mob or the ones that aren’t are staying quite in a fear of retaliation. If such wokeness continues, I will stop watching sports and won’t buy any merchandises. This name change isn’t enough to turn me away but if the athletes start acting like Lebron, I will stop watching.

My problem is that instead of doing something difficult like pushing for teaching Oregon’s history which would actually teach white Oregonians about the racist history of the state they live in they are instead virtue signaling by pretending to do something when in actuality they are doing nothing.

    • You’ve got that right, I agree.
Those that wanted this change, however, don’t seem to want actual education. They want something else, I suspect some sort of “white shame”. And this move is only, as you say, “virtue signaling by pretending to do something when in actuality they are doing nothing.”.

      From the GT:
Doc Ray,“…We do so now, along with other important actions to advance equal opportunity and justice for all and in recognition that Black Lives Matter.”
Again, from the GT; Barnes says, “We will embrace members of the university community, alumni, student-athletes, and friends of Oregon State to assist in a collaborative process with the University of Oregon to consider other names for this historic rivalry.”
      Yeah, form a committee.

      • 2
        3

No one is gonna use whatever nonsense name they come up with.

Georgia v Florida is still a cocktail party
Oklahoma v Texas is still a shootout

I’d fully support an Oregon History course as a Humanities requirement. Seems like a common sense idea at an Oregon public university.

  14. 2
    1

I think there is currently an implicit expectation that action is taken before it is demanded. Businesses especially have to make changes that they anticipate the public will want (not necessarily the majority of the public) in order appear proactive. If they wait for someone to demand the change then the company looks like they made the change just because it was demanded and not because they think it’s the right thing to do. Also, it’s much easier for businesses to make drastic changes in the name of social correctness than it is to defend not making the change. If OSU and UO don’t make this change then there will be student protests, news articles, etc. blasting the administrations. I don’t like the change but I expected it.

    • Maybe just wait until… 12 people complain about it? None people is a pretty low bar. Twelve is low too, but higher than none people.

  15. Many thoughts…
Does this move do anything to solve racism, tensions or even historical inequalities? No.
Is the term Civil War even unique to American history? No. There are currently 2 dozen or more countries with civil wars going on today.
Is the American Civil War a symbol of racism, or racial inequity? In the sense that this was the only time in history that a free people took arms to free slaves from bondage, my answer would be No.
Does it seem a little fishy that Ed Ray decided to make this move FOUR FUCKING DAYS before he retires? Yes. Either, Ray wanted to blow up the building and walk away Joker style, or F King asked Ray to fall on the sword for him.
Has any imagery of the American Civil War ever been associated with the sporting games? (Ie Duck fans in grey, waving the Stars and Bars, or OSU fans in blue shooting canons) No. There has never been a connection to the conflict.
    Was it necessary? No.
Was anyone actually clamoring for this action? No.

In the end, it strikes me as this. Ed Ray probably pushed for this. It allows him to virtue signal ” Look at me, I did a thing!”, but also walk away and not having to either:
    Lead.
    or Deal with consequences.

    • 11

Dr Ray leaving Fking in an untenable situation. Has to deal with the people who are PO’d by the name change or look like a racist for walking it back. He will not walk it back. Ray is a dickhead imho

    • Agree with what you said.

I thought in the article it quoted former players who wanted this change to happen? I guess maybe that’s not what you mean by clamoring.

      • Sounds more to me like it was pitched to them and they were like yeah ok that sounds cool.

The only proactive name I saw was Dennis Dixon approaching Mullens about it.

    • 2
      1

I think Ed Ray would have done this whether he was staying or going. He already spear headed the name change of many of the “racist” buildings on campus. I think Dr. Ray is a great person and has done amazing things for Oregon State University but I do not agree with revisionist history just to appeal to those that might be offended. As a Country we need to embrace all our History (Good and Bad) or we have no history. Who chooses what is good or bad and where does it stop?

      • I agree with what you said about history. It’s not there to be liked or disliked. It’s there so we can learn from it.

  16. Eggers take, in part;
In gathering information for my 2014 book, “Civil War Rivalry: Oregon vs. Oregon State,” I spoke with dozens of Black athletes from both schools. While some carried antipathy toward the opposite side, all seemed to enjoy what the intra-state rivalry was all about, and there was a great deal of respect for “the Civil War” all around…
But honestly, has anyone ever thought about “slavery” when watching Civil War football, basketball or baseball?

    Lots more here:

    https://www.kerryeggers.com/stories/talking-the-civil-war-kevin-love-keanon-lowe-coaching-payouts-and-the-film-just-mercy

  17. So is this like the swastika in a sort of way? While it originally had nothing to do with hate or racism it now does because of nazis. Black players hear the term civil war and think about the American one and slavery.

I was talking to my friend who married Bernard and I guess he did an interview with kval. I didn’t listen to it but she said that he always thought it was weird that we would call it that. I tried to explain to her that the term wasn’t exclusive to America but to no avail. I wanted to say that instead of changing the name maybe we should educate people on the term and that there are ones going on as we speak. I thought better of it.

  18. i’m more worried about actually having a football season then what the cw is called, wasn’t the cw originally called the oregon classic? Or something like that

  19. 4
    1

Shouldn’t OSU and UO drop Oregon from their name? If you know your history Oregon was founded on very racist principles. Doesn’t seem right to have 2 universities honoring that legacy.

      • I mean that’s a great album, too.
I don’t see it as an either/or (any Elliot Smith fans?).

Personally I’m just a fan of great music. I can go from Master of Puppets to Take 5.

        • Bat out of hell is good but wouldn’t be in my top 10.

          Master of Puppets might be.

Honestly, just looking at 1977 I’d put Rumuors and Exodus above it but 3rd is a solid spot for 1977.

            Ha the 70s.
Was there ever a band as bipolar as Styx? Tommy Shaw and that other James Hetfield looking dude were hard rockers and their rock songs were awesome. Renegade. Blue Collar Man. Too Much Time On My Hands.

Then there was Dennis Deyoung and his library of Barry Manilow covers. Ugh. Such a weird band.

    • 1
      1

Nope. I think for what it was the perfomance and production were fine, but I wouldn’t buy it and don’t ever think of listening to it.

      State your case.

AC/DC’s “Powerage.” Great album though it lacks maybe high production values and Scott’s vocals are limited.

        • 1
          1

Oh yeah, Scott is the best of the two. Sometimes I think he’s just a bit too nasal. My favorite singer in the band.

Tracks like “Gone Shootin'” or “Kicked in the Teeth” (if slowed down), I could imagine John Lee Hooker covering; such a great, bluesy album.

Scott was SUCH a better writer than Johnson, probably because he wrote from experience. Johnson always seemed more “if-if-could-do-this-i-would” type of writer.

Dirty Deeds is great one. I think Powerage is underrated though for that time period.

    • Love the title…”…over lack of marketing benefits.”

Ouch. Another dinger on Chip. The AD’s got him on the hot seat already. ‘

Just think, that used to be a program of national relevance.

      • I think that means ucla isn’t wearing UA like they should be. There was an article from 2018 stating some ucla athletes were wearing other brands for footwear.

Politics is destroying sports and it is disappointing.Too many sheep and not enough people who will speak and stand against the onslaught of criticism that comes from the twitter mob, media mob etc. Political correctness has become a marxist revolution in our midst. Groupthink and thought police…George Orwell was right.
Lebron, Oprah are the counter argument to any real systemic racism. Both are appreciated and adored by all societal groups, Obama was elected twice. This is not a systemically racist country but somehow it becomes a major topic about every 4 years…who benefits from such events?
The breakdown of the family unit has been the tragic change in the black community over the last 50 years, mostly in Dem controlled cities, encouraged by government policies of welfare programs.

Trump getting elected as backlash against things like this is a bad take. Trump got elected due to his authoritarian style providing fear and anxiety relief to a segment of society fearful of a more egalitarian society where whites hold less power.

    • 29
      10

      Wrong.

Trump got elected as backlash from 8 years of the average Joe being talked down to and told everything about them was wrong by liberal know it all dickheads like you.

        8

        Fucking hilarious take…good stuff

(Btw, thanks to you I learned lots of new things about the Civil War including that your boy Lee was in fact indicted for treason so looks like this 1860’s grand jury’s thought more like me than you)

        • There was maybe a small faction of white people who felt their place in the world slipping away, but I don’t think they were a deciding factor.

It’s hard to be mad all day, every day — puts the body in a steady state of anxiety and tension, and the body wants homeostasis. So it’s a small minority who can pull that off. Big two reasons were below: economy and being spoken down to (especially being called stupid/deplorable). Even if there is some truth to that, you don’t say it (some liberal hypocrisy there, imo, in that they feel it’s fine to label an entire group stupid).

It’s frustration over “why can’t you see the world exactly like I do!?”, which is again ironic because liberals claim to love diversity. But only diversity that matches their world view. Oxymoron/ironic is how I see that.

          • 9
            1

I’m not that political, but I don’t think it can be stressed enough that Clinton was not a great candidate, seems more that she blew it than Trump won it. Biden had his chance four years ago. He may very well win this time, but I doubt he can finish his term. I’ve been very close to Alzheimer’s disease over the past 10 years, Biden is exhibiting some of the mannerisms I have observed day to day. It seems bizarre to me that his declining cognitive abilities are being framed as “gaffes”. Maybe the nation already knows they will be voting for his running mate as President?

          • 1
            10

            Conservatives call liberals stupid too.

So the claim that liberals are somehow hypocrites for it is bullshit.

I’m done walking on egg shells because ignorant people want to revel in their ignorance.

          • 8
            1

It’s not hypocrisy because (a) they don’t do that in nearly the same numbers – liberals have it as a main talking point and (b) conservatives never claimed to be tolerant of all and don’t build their message around tolerance.

While you’re right in regards to “whataboutisms” and all that crap (cult mindset, etc), you are also part of the problem telling these people how they should see the world and calling them stupid. Most of them aren’t stupid. Most of them are conservative and have a different world view. If you don’t get that, there’s more irony there.

Trumpers right now are very confused, impressionable, and scared people, and some of the reasons for fear are very valid; they aren’t necessarily stupid people. That stupid angle is the real problem.

          • 1
            10

            Bullshit angry, bullshit.

You just aren’t bothered by it when conservatives do it so you believe they don’t do it as often. But that is bullshit, sorry but you can’t have it both ways simply because it makes you feel good.

BTW, beyond telling people they shouldn’t support fascism (which I foolishly thought was common sense in the USA) when have I ever asked for anyone to change their worldview?

And sorry but if you support Trump in 2020 you are stupid (having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense.) when it comes to your political position. And I am not going to pretend you aren’t.

          • 11
            1

Nope, but that’s why you’re part of the liberal problem.

The more you dig in with that the more likely Republicans win again.

          • 1
            9

Yeah, because moderates like you think it is okay for Republicans to be assholes and expect Democrats to just shut up and take their shit without response.

It may work for Republicans, doesn’t make it right.

And it is on you for buying into their bullshit lie.

          • I’m not buying anything. Reality is what it is. You’re an emotional basketcase who can’t accept reality and instead wants to create these boxes that all Republicans are racists, run on a platform of tolerance and tolerate nothing, etc. You can’t see your shit stinks, and that’s just reality. There are a lot of Republicans on AB, and most are pretty awesome people, and they aren’t stupid. I even let one of them be an admin and run the site when I’m away. That’s what true tolerance looks like.

You have some valid points in other areas, but it’s not this stuff that it’s alright to call them all stupid and then run on a platform of tolerance.

          • 1
            4

I think it is funny that you want to make my position absolute.

            But you do you.

I know plenty of awesome Republicans, nearly everyone in my life is a Republican. I was the best man in 2 weddings of Republicans since 2016.

But you prove my point, perceived liberals (I am very much a moderate) can’t be critical of Republicans in anyway, shape, or form and if you do it is your fault they support fascism but conservatives are allowed to paint all liberals with the same brush as communists

          • I’ve been plenty critical of Republicans on here, but I’m not going to criticize them over things they never claimed to be (e.g. tolerant, in this case). Nor do I see the point of calling them stupid when they’re mostly not (by definition most should have average IQs). I see them as angry, fearful, and confused people. You see that as stupid. We’ll never agree. I also see them as people, who in general, just want to be left alone. Then people come along and tell them their thoughts are incorrect. That’s not going to sit well with people minding their own business who want to be left alone. I find Republicans to be more “live and let live”, ironically…they get shitty when poked, but that makes sense to me.

There is plenty to be critical with Republicans, so I’m not giving them a pass. I mean Trump being the biggest Socialist in history would be a good starting point considering they’re the Party that feared Bernie. THAT is a hypocrisy worth noting. Many others, including the fascist arguments, etc.

Dude, my Trump supporting friend calls me a communist on a daily basis but I am not a whiney little bitch that is afraid of my shadow because of it. And everything I type on here I have said directly to him and he also isn’t a whiney little bitch that is afraid of his shadow over it (beyond not talking to me for a week when I finally responded to his communist comment with a fascist one).

He even loves Trump’s socialism. It isn’t even about any policy for him anymore, just Trump.

Fear is no excuse for ignorance. It just isn’t.

And Republicans are anything but live and let live, that is simply untrue. Republicans want to control who you can marry, what religion you believe in, and what woman can do with their bodies among all kinds of other policies Republicans support that are anything but “live and let live”

          • Yeah, that’s true regarding live and let live. That’s my perception of them due to Libertarian types, but I’m not sure it’s reality. That’s why I said “I find them to be…” not that they are. It’s not really accurate.

What do you think of liberals wanting to defund the police after telling people they don’t need guns because they have the police?

          • I favor re-imagining policing in America and think we should rebuild from the ground up. And my perception of the “defund the police” movement is just that because that is clearly what the majority position of Democrats who are running for office support.

I don’t accept the premise of the 2nd part of your argument though, Liberals aren’t coming for all guns and never have been.

Although after watching a GA Congresswoman rant about black people open carrying in Atlanta I wouldn’t be shocked to see the GOP flip on that issue if such actions continue in black neighborhoods.

          • My question is more general, though. I’m not saying liberals are coming for guns, etc.

My question is simply: what do you think of some of the same people who said you don’t need guns because you have the police, now saying they want to defund the police.

Are these “stupid” people, confused people, angry people, etc?

          • 1
            5

            Stupid.

But they are a tiny % of the people involved in the movement and hold zero power.

The Republican party is ran by the ignorant at this point.

        • WOT… mckalk. Drove by Volcano Stadium twice yesterday. Full on games with blue clad umpiring crew. Do you know what might be going on? I think you once mentioned that your kids had started to practice.

Hey, PB. I don’t live in Salem, but I’m there almost weekly on business. Marion County is in Phase 2, so as I understand there can be gatherings of 100 people. Oddly enough, The Portland Pickles (college summer league) are playing their home games at Volcano Stadium for the time being. You could be seeing some variation of that. The league also has a Gresham based team and West Linn, I think, so they could be doing all games down there for now. My son’s team has an upcoming tournament in Salem

          • Thanks….. if you don’t mind, please let me know of any live baseball. It’s one thing I really miss. I’m a regular at local high school and small college games. Nothing better than a few innings on a hot day. I still play organized ball, even my age, but that has been reduced to batting practice with 5-6 guys.

            1

Here’s a link to the Wild West League (summer college baseball). Games don’t start until July 11th. I’m pretty sure they are going to be played at Volcano Stadium (at least at the beginning of the season).

Also, in reading a little more, it looks like season ticket holders get the first crack at attending. They’re going to allow 100 fans to attend. If season ticket holders don’t bite, then some general seating will be offered. The latest article I read just said “Marion County”, but I’m not sure where else they would play besides Volcano Stadium? If Portland ever gets to Phase 2, they will move the games back to Walker Stadium in Portland.

No, he got elected due to people taking a gamble he’d fix the economy for them, and then backlash against liberals. As a moderate, I can tell you that’s exactly why I voted for him. I won’t be voting for him again, but if liberals keep it up, I know a lot of other moderates who will.

This is a tough election for me because I back Trump on the idea we need to get off China (though he hasn’t really done much to get us off China), Biden does seem in decline, etc. Due to Trump fatigue alone I can’t put up with him for another four years. Dude is a draining, drama queen. I’ll take four years of Biden as a boring filler over that. Maybe we get better candidates in 2024. We definitely need to continue this “get off China” mindset as a Nation moving forward.

      • 1
        7

Why do moderates not have an issue with conservative name calling?

Why is that side exempt from the rules you’ve set for liberals?

Or are you honestly gonna pretend conservatives don’t do the exact same thing to people they disagree with?

This double standard (it’s okay for Republicans to call all Democrats communists but if you call a Republican a fascist you are the jerk) is bullshit.

          • 1
            3

So when conservatives claim they are the party of Lincoln and the party of Civil Rights (as they often do) they aren’t claiming they are the real tolerant and morally superior side?

            What are they claiming?

          • They don’t “often” do that historically speaking. That’s a very recent thing. Came about as a defense mechanism to being called racists.

So what they’re “claiming” is basically “we’re not all racists, assholes”, and they do it via Lincoln/Civil Right votes. Of course Lincoln was a modern day democrat and both parties have basically reversed, and the Civil Right votes of the 60s had more to do with Southern democrats pandering a bit…weird era for the South and Democrats. Hence a Texas dem in LBJ getting elected.

Cue rant about that being bullshit, and that I’m stupid. Go.

          • 1
            6

LOL, oh those poor conservatives just need a defense mechanism to protect them from all us evil man bun wearing liberal twats…..

Nope, I agree with everything you just said. You are exactly right.

Also, when did I call you stupid? I called people planning to vote for Trump in 2020 stupid because they are.

          • Again, what I wrote is just reality. You can argue with reality all you want, but that’s a circular argument I’m not getting involved with.

People voting for Trump in 2020 can and many do have a much higher IQ than you and I. To claim they’re all stupid you’d have to do testing on every one. What is stupid is that comment. They’re not all stupid, but they definitely have a world view and different values. Some are probably stupid, but some Democrats are stupid, too. To me this is entirely pointless to point out.

For example, you have (stupid) liberals arguing trannies should be playing female sports, where they can actually kill real females due to their strength advantage, just because the tranny claims to feel like a woman. Explain how that’s not the stupidest thing in history?

          • 2
            3

            I believe I agreed with you didn’t I?

You can have a high IQ and still be stupid (having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense) in a particular area of your life.

And if you still support Trump in 2020 you are stupid when it comes to politics regardless of your IQ.

          • Regarding having a high IQ and being stupid in a particular area, how do you think that pertains to my edit (the last paragraph) above regarding female sports? Because that’s a firmly liberal argument, and to me it’s one of the more “stupid” ones out there.

          • 1
            3

To your transexual point, I’m gonna be honest I have paid less than zero attention to said debate because it is not affecting any sport I give a shit about but I sided with the PGA in the Casey Martin case so would side with any organization that wanted to ban such transitions from their sports (or create a separate division).

But it still isn’t as stupid as ignoring Russia putting bounties on American soldiers so no it isn’t the stupidest thing in history.

          • Well think about it some more and get back to me. Because you have trannies with the strength of men crushing bones of real females. It’s going to take one dying, unfortunately, before we can call liberals out on this genius idea.

          • 1
            3

Wouldn’t the conservative/republican response be to let the organizations decide what they want to allow?

            You know, capitalism?

Because honestly, that is my position. Just like it was with the PGA and Martin.

          • 2
            3

It is curious that you seem more worked up over “liberals” wanting transexuals in sports than our government allowing a foreign entity to put bounties on our soldiers.

I don’t know, I feel the latter is a bigger issue.

          • Trump is 95% a disaster as is his entire cabinet. I mean Jared Kushner? Just…wow. That covers everything going on, so I don’t feel the need to comment on it. We also had talks in the past about the cult mindset and the fascist angle. You know where I stand.

You’re talking about stupidity being lopsided to one Party, so that’s why I’m focused on the trannies in sports issue and the police/gun issue.

          • No I am not, stupid political positions cross the entire political spectrum. And I have never pretended otherwise. Again, you are trying to make my position absolute when it fact I have said time and time again I specifically hate Donald Trump (and now by extension of the decisions made by most elected Republcans (Romney and Amash are cool with me) I hate them too).

I am arguing that the Republicans have put the stupid in charge.

You think I am mean to Trump supporters get a Bernie Bro on here and see how stupid I find them to be. 2 sides of the same coin. The difference? Democrats didn’t put the stupid in charge.

          • 2
            1

Wish Romney were an option this cycle…
He’s a pretty reasonable/sane person, and an actual leader. Both traits in high demand right now.

In the CO election I voted out every (R) except the UC Boulder president — the last thing we need on campuses are more liberals. But everyone else, gone. They hitched their wagon, so they gotta go. It’s a risk because we will see more radical left crap coming in, but the message had to be sent. Bottom line is it’s going to take a long time to recover from Trump…

          • 1
            5

I think you greatly over rate the “threat” of the radical left. It is a very loud minority in reality. And the good news about it? Even if they get in power they tend to favor democracy so the republic would survive.

On the other hand radical right is in full control of the Republican Party right now. And the radical right prefers authoritarianism to democracy.

          • 1
            4

            Based on what evidence?

Conservatives don’t even hide their desire to prevent people from voting at this point.

Name one policy that supports your position that the radical left wants authoritarianism?

          • I’ve interacted with them, and they share the same personality traits of authoritarians. Wanting to censor Twitter, etc would be one example, though. Just think about it. There are many. Anywhere they want government to come in with force to stop something they don’t like.

Thomas Costello, a graduate student at Emory University in the US, has tried again and come back with some different results. Costello and his team used standard psychological procedures to developed a new test for identifying people with “left-wing authoritarian” personality types. They identified some tell-tale signs of left-wing authoritarians: They believe people in power should be punished and the existing order should be violently overthrown. They see people with opposing political views as inherently immoral and prefer to be surrounded by people who share their values. They think the government or other institutions should forcefully stop people from sharing views they find abhorrent.

Left-wing authoritarians, in Costello’s research, typically strongly agree with the following statements: the rich should be stripped of their belongs and status; deep-down just about all conservatives are racist, sexist and homophobic; classrooms can be safe spaces that protect students from the discussion of harmful ideas.

Costello’s team also wanted to understand whether left-wing authoritarians behave in a different way to the rest of the population. Using a simple game, they found left-wing authoritarians were much more likely to punish others who held opposing political beliefs and favour people who shared their beliefs.

Other researchers have noticed left-wing authoritarians tend to reject mainstream political institutions. A study of 13 Eastern European countries led by Utrecht University’s Sabrina de Regt found that left-wing authoritarians were more distrustful of democratic institutions than their fellow citizens. Christopher Federico of the University of Minnesota looked at left-wing authoritarians in Western Europe and the US. With his team he found left-wing authoritarians were more likely to absent themselves from mainstream politics.

More recently Bristol University’s Paula Surridge has found that a mixture of left-wing economic values and authoritarian social values influences how people vote. Looking at data since 2015, she found people with traditional left-wing economic values (who agreed with statements such as, “there is one law for the rich and one for the poor”) and authoritarian value (who agreed with statements such as, “censorship is necessary to uphold moral values”) were more likely to vote for right-wing parties than people with left-wing economic values and liberal social values. This was particularly true if they did not already identify with a political party.

Although left-wing authoritarians might seem like the polar opposite of their right-wing authoritarian cousins, there is much they share. Using standard personality tests, Costello found that both left and right-wing authoritarians tended to be disagreeable, lacked intellectual humility, were not particular contentious and had a tendency to be mean. Where left and right-wing authoritarians differ is their attitude towards current society. While right-wing authoritarians fanatically support authority figures in power, their left-wing cousins fanatically oppose them. Costello and his team found that left-wing authoritarians were also more likely to be keen on political violence than their right-wing counterparts.

Tell me how this isn’t a left authoritarian who has zero interest in democracy.

          • 1
            3

To be clear, I am not saying no liberal has ever believed in authoritarianism, communism is historical fact and I am well aware communists exist in the US.

            But….

They are obviously a tiny group compared to the right wing authoritarians since they can’t even win a Democratic Primary. Probably because they are too busy supporting Trump which even your article brings up (they vote for right wing authoritarians).

So, yeah, if you want to call people that vote for right wing authoritarians left wing radicals I won’t argue. I’ll show concern when they actually have enough power to get Democrat with authoritarian tendencies nominated. Let’s just say I don’t see that happening anytime soon (likely why they turn to right winger authoritarians instead)

          • Maybe. I edited and added a video link — that type of personality, to me, is left-wing authoritarian. You can see the rage and violence in that woman, and that she’d love to just tell (or force) people what to do. I’ve seen that personality more and more since 2008 (occupy wall st in 2011, for example, of a movement in that direction). There’s been more…just look around Twitter, Reddit, YT, etc. It’s growing. I’d say both sides are becoming more authoritarian. I think it’s because neither side can “win” a fair, civil argument or get the other side to budge. So they want to gain power, then control people/the argument with force and fear.

          • I guess our disconnect here is that I couldn’t care less about your economic beliefs, to me who you are is defined by your social beliefs.

And even your article mentions that the people you are discussing are left wing economically but socially authoritarian (which they appear to imply is the opposite of liberal social values so are these people really even liberals?).

I am far more concerned with how people want to control me socially than rather they favor pure capitalism, pure socialism, or a mixed market.

And if a left wing Trump emerges I will hate him just as much as I hate Trump.

And I don’t think it has gotten worse since 2008, this is weak sauce compared to the stuff they did in the 60’s.

I do agree that we are seeing frustration, I just can’t figure out why people don’t realize our federal government gets nothing done because Mitch McConnell likes it that way.

Ultimately I subscribe to the horseshoe theory of politics and consider extreme left wingers and extreme right wingers to be virtually the same.

Angry gets it… I am glad to hear other people don’t blindly follow, that is the danger I see from both sides… When you don’t question or criticize your leaders, you become submissive.

Not sure you would get four years of Biden – he looks as though a strong wind would blow him over and tho I am paying zero attention to the campaign, I can’t escape the gaffe headlines. The DNC is dishonest, if not corrupt, and big money rules the system. The US is going to have peculiar and/or incompetent leaders until there is campaign finance reform- which gets lip service but no action.

    • I just noticed WFO called me a dickhead for pointing out the truth of the appeal of Trump to less educated white people.

I’d respect that take if the “average joe” would make an effort to educate themselves to differing opinions, as opposed to being spoon fed pablum by the talking point network.
Back on topic, it’s the Ducks/Beavers game. The least of my worries what it’s called. I can’t imagine donors canceling their tickets over this. Talk about snowflakes.

      • 11

Yep, it’s a major problem in the Left.
I don’t think Trump wins this time around, but if he does it’s going to be due to more of the same where the Left tells people how to think, calls people stupid, etc. It’s a really bad look.

Lol, at least you guys finally admit you are so weak minded that all you care about anymore is ‘owning the libs’

I commend you for actually looking in to the history re: “my boy” Lee. I see you got to a point you agree with and stopped reading. The man that was pushing for charging Confederate soldiers with treason was a loud mouth New York transplant. Feel free to look him up next and see how far his indictments went.

          • 1
            3

            Okay,

So do President’s often pardon people for non-crimes?

Because it is a fact that on December 25th 1868 Andrew Johnson Pardoned Confederates for Treason.

Where was Andrew Johnson from (hint, not New York)?
So either Johnson thought they committed treason (which he clearly did believe if you read his statements) or he gave out pardons for things that weren’t crimes?

            Peculiar.

Note: You said that you would listen to a Grand Jury of that time over some man bun wearing liberal twat in 2020 but I guess you were lying about that too because it was a Grand Jury that indicted Robert E. Lee.

          2

Reality is..we’re not taught in school the real history behind the Civil War. The issue of slavery was just a front for a war that was fought over resources and manufacturing. Control of resources are generally the primary objective of most wars if the truth be told. Just another tidbit of history not taught about the CW and Honest Abe…..Lincoln at one time or another desired to ship all of the slaves off to an island off the coast of South Carolina. Yet, Lincoln will always be remembered for his fight against slavery. Whether or not you consider the Confederate Army traitors depends on which side of the fight you were on I suppose.

    • LOL
Actually, it’s the Beavers/Ducks game. And what it’s called isn’t the big deal, it’s the W’s that are important.

    • I didn’t say anyone would cancel tickets, but I do think people on the margin might cut back donations.
Let’s put it this way: I don’t see any huge influx in donations due to the move.

        1

Far from it, Tex. That statement being divisive? Interesting that your perception interpreted that way. For instance, I’m a liberal, yet when Something “big” Happens in the news, I’ll flip over to Fox to hear what they’re saying, or EVEN IF they are covering the same event.
I’d guess Not many Fox watchers Can say the same.

Let me relate that to Covid opinions. Studies have shown that Fox viewers have a greater belief in that this a hoax, And mask wearing is not necessary. It’s not a hoax and mask wearing does mitigate transmission. Do I think Fox viewers are stupid because that’s their opinion? Yes, because they Are getting A worldview from a single source, not Willing to engage in other sources of information. Take a step further, Hannity viewers poll even more negatively to Covid Realities than Tucker Carlson watchers.

For instance, today’s news regarding bounties placed on the heads of Americans per intelligence sources. No mention on Fox. President says he never heard about it. Is that because he honestly can’t read the PDB’s, or are they filtered Because he can’t handle the responsibilities of being President.

Lastly, I highly doubt moderates are going to vote for Trump because liberals insult them. They gave the guy a chance and found out every day is a fucking drama with a reality TV President. Google Republican voters against trump.

I apologize for the random Caps in this. Typing on an IPad does weird things.

        • Replying to myself. Relaxing and reading the Bend Bulletin after yard work. Main article is about how many shoppers are wearing masks in Central Oregon. Here’s a quote from a shopper at Walmart, (and I can’t believe I’m writing this, let alone reading it).

“I don’t wear a mask, because I don’t believe it. I think it’s absolutely a government hoax to make money and make people scared. There’s something else going on”

          WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?

Do any of you agree/believe/worry that’s the case? If so, where are the facts for that, how reputable are the sources? And how come only the few, such as said above shopper know Of these hoaxes. Educate me.

          • I see that and think, “Ah, they watch Fox News”…
There’s actually a personality type that’s susceptible to conspiracy, too. Look it up. It’s a cognitive thing. A friend of mine has this…he’s a good guy and functions in society with a good job, but he literally believes every conspiracy.

          • My brother believes it’s a hoax, showed up at my mom’s house yesterday after years of not speaking to her and when she wanted to talk outside (obvious reasons) he lost it and called it a hoax.

            People are brainwashed.

            1

People are so ignorant of history, it’s not like this is the first “plague” that has swept over humans. It’s depressing to hear that some think their rights are being violated by being ordered to wear a mask or the virus is a hoax.

  23. Steve Gress has seldom impressed me, but he is the only local “beat” reporter for Beavs news, so I read most of his stuff. Gress says his hope for those on both sides of the name change issue is “that it’s an opportunity to listen and learn from those young adults that we cheer on whenever they take the field, court, etc.” His commentary mentions the incident when the WBB civil war was played immediately after the death of Kobe Bryant; he thinks the name change is similar in power.

He is mistaken. The demonstration of support and sportsmanship shown when the Beaver gals joined their uck opponents on the court for prayer and consolation was a spontaneous act by SA’s and was relevant to the moment. The committee crafted and coordinated act of announcing a name change does not send the same unifying message and has a different foundation. The actions of the WBB team were noticed by fewer people than the name change but were more personally impactful and far less divisive than the change. Style vs substance.

Eggers not only is a superior reporter, his response to the news is much more reasoned, IMHO.
Gress does say, “… far be it from me to tell you what you should think.”
On that I agree and join him.
Far be it from me to tell you degenerates what to think.

OT- I’m confessing, I’ve watched a couple of hours of car racing with my father-in-law in my desperation for live sports, but I don’t think I’m understanding the Bubba Wallace story which is continually being brought up. So someone tied a noose in a garage but it was five months before Wallace used the garage? Is that correct? How is that a story unless they can find out who tied it and why they tied it that way and even then the person would have needed to be Nostradamus to know Wallace would eventually use the garage? This story and the confederate flags seem to be overshadowing the actual racing. It’s time for the flags to go, Wallace story seems like a non-story. And yes, I’m trying to figure out how to not extend this NASCAR family bonding.

    • Basically yeah. Someone tied it up there long before Bubba and his team used the stall. So noises hanging in stalls isn’t good for many reasons but the targeting of Wallace with the noise is incorrect.

      • 6
        6

        It wasn’t a noose.

It was the pull rope for the garage door.

Bubba Smollett never even saw it but still used the opportunity to get all teary eyed about how oppressed he is.

            1. It was indeed used as a loop for the end of a garage door pull rope. Nascar has stated this.

            2. It was there as early as last fall. Also stated by nascar. So it was not fabricated as a form of intimidation towards Wallace.

            3. Without seeing it up close it is almost impossible to determine if it is a hangman’s noose or the hangman’s knot (also known as a Duncan knot). They are not the same. The latter has many uses but mainly in fishing and other outdoor recreational activities. I personally use this knot fishing.

            4. As a generalization, I’d be willing to bet most guys involved in professional auto racing are probably the “outdoorsy type”.

The most logical reasons someone placed it there seems to be for practical use and they just happened to know how this knot is tied. The facts also seemsL to point towards this conclusion. Also probably why the FBI investigation did not find a crime was committed.

As for the actual reasons why the person that tied it, did? You’d have to ask them if that is ever known. I’m just giving the facts (and a few logical opinions).

NASCAR has also stated that it was indeed tied as a noose.

I’ve also seen the picture and it is a noose.

The intent of said noose is unknown, no one is claiming otherwise but it was 100% a noose. I have eyes, I saw the picture, it was a noose.

This is what I hate about America right now.

It is okay to admit that what NASCAR found is a noose while still recognizing it may not have been intended to be any kind of message to anyone. But pretending it wasn’t a noose is just silly.

Thanks for proving my point guys…………Do either of you know the difference? Ever tied either one?

“The Uni Knot was invented by Norman Duncan and is also known as the Duncan Knot. It was also published later under the name Uni Knot by the outdoor writer Vic Dunaway as being a versatile knot that can have many applications. It is also known as a Grinner Knot and has the same appearance as a Hangman’s Noose although it is different internally. When used to join two lines it is known as a Double Grinner or a Double Uni Knot.”

            https://www.animatedknots.com/uni-knot

Looking at a picture and coming to a conclusion on what it exactly is you are looking at is next to impossible. I never said it was not a noose. Here is exactly what I wrote…………….

“Without seeing it up close it is almost impossible to determine if it is a hangman’s noose or the hangman’s knot (also known as a Duncan knot). They are not the same. The latter has many uses but mainly in fishing and other outdoor recreational activities. I personally use this knot fishing.”

Probably should have wrote “without taking it apart, I personally cannot tell the difference.” I’m willing to bet no one else here can either.

Had someone, ANYONE (The FBI, Nascar, etc, come out and stated, we took it apart and determined it was in fact a noose, or vice versa? Hearsay. All I read was, “it was a noose”. Cool. How did you come to that determination just by looking at it? Looking at that pic, sorry. Not myself nor anyone else here can make that determination. Fact.

But continue hating because some choose to come to conclusions by drawing on facts, logic and reason instead of emotion.

A man only hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.

            Cool, believe whatever you want.

I’ve seen the photo, it is a noose.

I don’t need to you to break down how it might be some tie that just looks exactly like a noose, I honestly don’t care.

If it looks like a noose, it is a reasonable assumption that it is a noose.

Why does it matter? Since as you said, as NASCAR said, and as I said, it was NOT put there to intimidate anyone so who cares if it was a noose?

          • I’m not the one that unequivocally is all knowing and states so. Nice try. I brought up an extremely plausible scenario given the parties involved. Not kneejerk, emotional reaction and continued to turn it political below.

“LOL, it was a noose. But you keep living in your fake reality”

          • you do understand (actually it is obvious you don’t) that I made no knee-jerk reaction, my point was simply that even if your reasonable reaction were correct NASCAR still made the correct decision.

You are the one claiming someone was in the wrong, not me.

        • In bubba’s defense he was told it was a noose and so I guess he ran with that. The picture I saw, which was from a distance, it looked like a noose. I do not know the difference between a hangman’s knot and a Duncan knot. In any case it appears to be much ado about nothing.

          • It was not a standard garage pull. It would be nice if people could at least just admit that. But nope because they gotta prove that NASCAR was both wrong to jump to a conclusion AND that NASCAR was wrong for investigating.

          • I think nascar was right to investigate and right to have the fbi do it. People should have kept it quiet until they got the results back.

I would imagine bubba would rather be known for winning races rather than being famous for this.

  25. Okie st writer’s take on our upcoming game in Stillwater.

    1
    Oregon State Beavers
    Sept. 3 Stillwater (Okla.)
    Oregon State Beavers Football

These two programs met for the first time ever last fall and that resulted in a 52-36 win for the Cowboys. Oregon State has been a struggling football program and have not had a winning season since 2013. They took some steps forward last season under coach Jonathan Smith, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

It will be hard to replicate that success with their two best offensive players now in the NFL, quarterback Jake Luton and wide out Isaiah Hodgins.

This will be an early test for the Oklahoma State defense to show that they have improved since last season. Defensive improvement will be the key to whether this Oklahoma State team can be a playoff contender or just another Big 12 team. Cowboys win big here.

Final Score: Oklahoma State 49, Oregon State 24 (1-0)

    • 4
      2

Little does he know we got an upgrade at QB, and WR has huge depth that won’t miss a beat, especially with Harrison being cleared.

        • Hey Alpha,

Just letting you know that I just got done fermenting an Oktoberfest using that W-34/70 yeast you recommended. About to bottle this weekend and I’ll let you know in a couple weeks how it turned out.

      • Not to mention a healthy JJ and what should be a much improved defense that we saw steadily improve last year over the last 4-5 games. As usual, the key will be stopping Ok State’s running game but their wide out play last year on the perimeter was solid, however, our defense was horrible last season up until the last 4-5 games.

    • Which of the teams is more unified, less distracted, has the chip on the shoulder, and has the Tibs D?
I’d not be surprised to see that final score reversed, anyway, Okie isn’t gonna score 49.

      • And smith made some questionable calls like going for two towards end of first half. It really was close and back and forth if I remember correctly last year. Have to think our defense won’t give up 52.

    • Also, what about Gundy’s relationship with the team? Will he lose them?

I think Hubbard is still a big threat running the ball, but if the Cowboy’s D isn’t very good, they’re going to be very surprised competitive this game will be. Gebbia did very well in the biggest game of the season last year (Civil War – oops, sorry.), and on relatively short notice. He’ll do better this time, spread the ball around, Jefferson will be Jefferson…special teams could be the difference. Hopefully Gebbia doesn’t continue to get his passes batted down next year.

  26. May have all ready been said but I’m wondering when some one will want to abolish the word ‘beaver(s)’ because relationship- to a woman’s private parts.

  27. 3
    3

Why don’t we just agree to call it the annual Duck kicks the Beavers arse game…..that’s what’s been happening over the last 10-12 years anyway.

  28. Why does it matter if it was a noose or not? I don’t get why it matters. What’s the point of denying it’s one knot and propping up the other knot? Is this what America is now fighting over?

Whether it’s a noose or Duncan knot affects my life how?

    • I’d say it is emblematic of our inability to even have shared facts anymore.

It can’t be a noose (or noose adjacent tie) that was left months ago for unknown reasons and NASCAR was right to investigate.

      It has to either be:

It was a noose intended to be a message to the one black driver (which we know it isn’t) or It was NASCAR overreacting to a randomly tied rope (which is the conclusion of those that want NASCAR to look bad).

      • Angry, I didn’t even start the discussion. I brought up an extremely plausible scenario given the parties involved. Did not say it was NOT a noose, nor did I turn it into politics.

        Plausible scenario…………….

Garage door pull rope end breaks, some crew member at some point in the past ties it into a noose OR duncan knot to replace what broke because that’s a knot he knows how to tie and is functional. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing intimidating or racism implied. Just someone trying to do their job. Simple explanation. Sometimes IT IS that simple.

The rest of these jack wagons came to those other conclusions on their own, including you and turned this into left vs right. Or whatever this bullshit is. I said nor implied any of that.

Sorry I even came back after self quarantining from the internet assholes and experts these last few months.

        • I have no problem with what you said. Your probably right.

Much of the media and many people want it to be about racism. If you don’t go along with their narrative you become the enemy and get attacked.

          • I wouldn’t have an issue with what he said either except honestly when have white people earned the benefit of the doubt?

          • Judge based on their character not their color. As an individual. Some guy with the initials mlk said something like that.

          • Yes, and how did white people respond to MLK saying that?

Sorry, it’s our turn to be the one’s stereotyped for once.

          • That has to be one of the dumbest things ever posted here. Congratulations!

And in response to yours above, I never stated nor implied ANYONE was in the wrong.

You came to that Knee jerk reaction/conclusion on your own.

That’s a you problem. Not overly surprising either.

        • I didn’t do any of that. I asked questions. No clue what’s going on with this story because I haven’t read about it, but I see people arguing over a noose.

          • I’m sort of sorry I brought it up in this thread, but I didn’t really understand it and it was all over the sports news. Not sure I totally understand it still, but I’m glad it wasn’t some clown trying to make a statement against Bubba Wallace. It seems like a non-story that should fade away fairly soon.

      • 2
        1

Have we ruled the following scenario out?

It’s a noose looking knot, but not an actual noose because it doesn’t tighten down on one’s hand when pulled on and it also happens to make a handy little doo-hickey for opening a garage door. And it was tied more than half a year ago, with no intention of being there for Bubba in June.
But then somebody at Nascar said “we should add these little rope handles to EVERY garage, they’re pretty useful! Also, it would be bad PR if we only left it in 1 garage out of 40 garages, just in case the lone black Nascar driver qualifies and then ends up in the very same garage within a month of a cop killing a black man on video in Minnesota. I mean, what are the chances the 1 black Nascar driver will be here in this very garage in 8 months?? Pretty low….but we should still fix this so it doesn’t look targeted”

And then Covid19 hit and the guy who was supposed to tie those little rope handles in every garage got furloughed and the rest is history…..

    • We have two sides to every issue no matter what. It doesn’t matter how dumb and incomplete the simplification of a complex situation is or if we have to make up both sides of an arguement over an innocuous subject. Division is a must and it’s driving me nuts.

    • 6
      1

There is nothing inherently wrong with a noose. It has been used to kill people of all creeds, religions and colors including a recent dictator in Iraq.

If it is used to threaten, intimidate or illegally kill someone then that is wrong. Other than that I couldnt care less if you want to use it as a garage pull or for anything else.

NASCAR decided that it should take it seriously, word got out and the media ran as fast and far with it as they could.

Holy crap, I just drove by a bunch of buildings with imagry of killing devices on them, targeted towards Christians. They’re everywhere I look. And all of the people coming out of the buildings were dressed really nicely, as if they didn’t know they were surrounded by these images.
I asked somebody about these awful things and they said they’re not new. Been around for years and years. I guess I just never noticed them until today.

        • Ahhh, got it. I thought long bows, sling shots – aggressive killing devices. Now it’s been explained – I quite like it.

      • Just being dumb. Was out camping this week and maybe drinking a little too much.

Stayed at Silver Falls for a few nights. Had never really spent much time there before. That place is a gem. So many cool spots to check out and a really nice network of trails.
I didn’t know the “falls” in Silver falls was plural, as in 10 or so different waterfalls. And most of them are pretty impressive. Silverton was a nice little town too. That’s one nice thing about Covid, it’s forcing us to explore nearby areas a little more than we had in the past.

  30. WFO, watching Ash vs Evil Dead tonight. Four episodes in. It’s great so far. Started off rough — Ash was a way bigger asshole in his old age. He’s softening and becoming more likeable, though, as it goes on.

        • I think so. A bunch were already here in Jan.

With the scholarship signing limits now, I don’t think schools take many chances anymore. Won’t let guys sign if they are have academic issues. See Alex Lemon.

Seems like there are fewer academic casualties under Smith. Just an observation, not fact based.

Civil War Name Change… call it:

    The 2020 Presidential Election Race

Duck, duck, Beavers Game (represents the win ratio too)

    The Family Feud

BTW. If we leave it Civil War that would be good because OSU is the North and Yucks are the South.

    • They should just play it on Thanksgiving ever year and call it the turkey bowl. Yes its unimaginative, but do you really think they’ll come up with something better?

    • This has no bearing on whether Harrison will be granted a waiver or not.
“He transferred from Florida State following the departure of head coach Willie Taggart, which should be enough of a reason to make him eligible to play immediately.”

Waivers for coaches leaving are granted for players who are part of the incoming class. For instance, if Harrison was a class of 2019 signee, who signed with Florida State, and then a month later Taggart left or was fired. Then Harrison would be granted an automatic waiver. But Harrison was from a prior class(2018) so that rule doesn’t apply. He actually got coached by Taggart for miat of a full season, before Taggart was fired in November.
He can still apply for a waiver and make a case for why he should be allowed to play( moving closer to home to help care for an ill family member is often used as a reason).
Maybe some conbination of his coach getting fired during season 1, plus moving closer to home will be reason enough.
It’s not publicly known what Harrison used to make his case, but Taggart’s firing alone is not enough to make this a lock.
Also, the NCAA is pretty inconsistent with these waivers, so it’s anyone’s guess if he’ll get it, until it’s actually official.

        • I would hope so, especially with Covid shaking things up this year. Who knows how many players will choose to sit out the year for safety reasons.
Wouldn’t make sense for the NCAA to disallow players from playing if they actually want to. The pool of available players may be smaller than normal this year.
Lowe is another guy in a similar situation as Harrison, waiting on the NCAA waiver ruling.

      • Still hilarious that Taggert got fired After getting his dream job and shitting the bed. Three(?) teams he coached went to bowl games, yet I don’t think he coached a one of them in a bowl game. The traveling salesman…

        • 5
          7

Haha. Called it from day 1.
Only reason Mario hasn’t shit the bed yet was he inherited Herbert, and the Conference was pretty weak (USC and UCLA especially important there, and they’re both bad by their standards). He will be exposed shortly.

          • “for some reason”
Don’t think the swoosh is the reason, Helfrich and Mario both had that. Maybe it’s simply the emphasis they placed on coaching hires? Seems Mario is more focused on recruiting ability than was Helfrich. IDK
It’ll will be interesting to see how Mario handles adversity; this could be the year we find out.

          • I suspect Mario’s floor is like 6 games, maybe lower with key injuries. He says his philosophy is to build from the lines, and he seems to be getting talent on both sides of the ball and teams CAN build from that. But I’d agree his recruiting ability seems better than his coaching ability. I think the ability to recruit lineman ranked that highly is suspicious. I know the kids love the Duck facilities, but if you’re 4 or 5 * and you can go anywhere…Eugene?!?

I think Cristobal hired a new O coordinator, so it will be interesting to see how that works out.

Back to Taggert – I wonder if he’s the first coach ever to get 3 different programs to bowl games and never have coached a single bowl game of the three teams. What a dubious record if so….

    • Whadya all think of the #4 guy on that list? Tavis Shippen?
With the team since January, listed as 6’4″, 288. Makes him one of the taller DL.
Guess I’ve been sleeping on this one, are there concerns beyond health?

      • I’d have to go re-watch the film, but first time around I wasn’t impressed:

Tavis Shippen — Really weird film. He seems to just bang guys with his shoulder. Not sure that plays well in the PAC-12. Technique flat out sucks. Looks to have a good body. I’m not sure you can teach a JC guy technique. At least he has good physical gifts to work with if they can teach him some form. I don’t understand the high rating, but maybe it’s a me issue.

Hopefully it is a me issue.

        • Tnx. Teaching technique to a JC guy is a tall order, and very much dependent on the players attitude. This staff seems to look at all aspects of a prospective player so maybe there’s a chance.

BTW, how are those 8 year old tomatoes doing?? I’m picking spinach, arugula, and other greens; corn is knee high!

          • They’re doing great — they’re on the upper/last rung of their cage. Must be over 3ft now. A lot of fruit coming in, too. My corn is knee high, too! I planted it late May on a whim because I realized we had some spare land outside the garden along a back fence. Didn’t have any expectations, so this is awesome. Even if we don’t get food from it, it will be cool for decoration in Fall.

I’m most excited about the Yukon Golds — they plants look so healthy. I can’t see how we fail to get a good crop. Had low expectations for those given the clay soil here (they might be deformed…we’ll see).

          • Planted seed indoors, first time I’ve tried that. Those plants really aren’t too far ahead of the seeds planted outside about 4 weeks later.
Yukon Gold, great spuds and the plants look so green and full in the garden.
Angry, have you read about using Tums to add calcium to those tomatoes if they start to get blossom end rot?

          • No, great tip, thanks.

I’ve got a huge compost bin going and add eggs every day to that, but it won’t be ready until next year. So this year it will be Tums if we need them. You just crush it up and add it to the soil?

          • Yeah, crush and add to soil or crush and mix with water. Even a foliar spray.
Search “blossom end rot”, sometimes calcium is the answer, sometimes overwatering.

          • Thanks.
Regarding if it’s a seed or kernel, I thought they were the same, too, but I think the packet said “seeds”…sure looked like kernels.
Since it’s my first year growing corn all new to me so I’m not sure.

          • Just a heads up, blossom end rot is a calcium deficiency but can still happen even if you’re loaded with calcium in your beds. The problem comes because your plant can’t take in clacium from the surrounding soil because of other deficiencies which in most cases is lime.
I’ve had it really bad for several years. It drove me nuts spraying blossom end rot stopper on my tomatoes (it’s a calcium solution) I was dumping 4 to 5 cups of bone meal in every planting hole before transplant and it still didn’t help. Final talk to a neighbor several houses down that grows for a local restaurant (about 100 plants), he told me about dumping lime on them instead of bone meal and calcium solution. Worked like a charm last year not one tomatoe got rot.
He also told me about trimming your branches back on tomato plants. Basically any brach off the main stem that doesnt have fruit on it you trim, you can tell by looking at the base of the branch where it connects to the stem will have 2 small leaf like nodes on it, those branches won’t grow fruit and are called runners(these are on most but not all tomatoes). This allows only fruit bearing branches to take in nutrients and water and not waste it on non bearing branches.

          • That’s all good to know. I read about pH but figured it was overrated and did nothing to amend the soil this year. The prior owner added a lot of fertilizer, so maybe that’s getting me through. Going to compost it next year. I’ll look for the rot, but so far the tomatoes look great. I trimmed all stems and leaves near the bottom, but I’ll look for runners tomorrow. I also shook some of the flowers so they pollinate one another. Some of the flowers inside look hard for insects to get to.

I grew some ornamental gourds in an area that has no fencing like the main garden does. They were growing great, then about 3 nights ago got decimated by something. All these tiny holes in the leaves to the point they are detriment and almost nothing left. Given the pattern I don’t think it’s rabbit. Has to be some type of insect, and probably active at night. It’s frustrating. I wanted corn and gourds for Fall! Even sprayed neem oil on it, but that did nothing.

          • OOB there is a guy on YouTube who made a slurry mixture with a gallon of luke warm water and several cups of pelletized calcitic lime. He mixed it til it was mostly dissolved and poured it onto several of his tomatoes and said it worked. Im not sure to the veracity of that but it might. One thing though, that guy was using containers for his tomatoes so that could make a difference since the root ball is concentrated.
I should have posted this above but i was told to use a pelletized calcitic or dolomitic lime because its the fastest acting type powdered lime takes too long to break down for plant uptake (weird I know). Both are mined from deposits of calcium carbonate but dolomitic has traces of magnesium in it. So if you have an ag extension office near you, it might be worth while to have your soil tested. Magnesium is an essential nutrient but rarely is it so low you need to ammend for it. However there are plant that require higher levels (no veggies that im aware of).

          • Angry you have cuke or Japanese beetles most likely. Get Sevin dust, its at every place that sells gardening stuff.
Just so you know sevin dust makes everything you shake it on look like you have powdery mildew, but you just leave it on for a few days then wash it off while watering. I get hit hard in my beans and peas mostly, after one application its over.

          • Angry, from my limited experience with tomato end rot don’t wait. Amend them with calcium now. I tried growing big tomatoes a couple of years ago and they got huge and beautiful and right before they were ready they rotted out. So annoying.

Also regarding pH, if you’re growing berries or anything that the books say like acidic soil *do not* disregard that. I have probably 10 blueberry plants and they did pretty well for the first couple of years. Then they went downhill. I dug in to it and was advised to mulch with wood shavings/dust. So I got a big ass bag of fir shavings and mulched the fuck out of em. Boom, massive growth and fruit everywhere. I could see the difference in about a week. Was pretty amazing.

      • He was supposedly living in the backfield in the few practices they had. I don’t know if it’s him or the OL tho. I think he’s only a RS sophomore. He’ll be a star by the time he’s done at OSU IMO.

      • Looking over that last, what strikes me:

If their depth chart projections are correct and both JC corners round out the top 4, we’ll have 3/4 of our top corners all related. That’s pretty nuts- two brothers and a cousin basically holding down an entire position group.

  32. The NCAA seems to be the ultimate arbiter of what’s right and wrong. Mississippi changing their flag so they can host NCAA events and not have their flag used against them in recruiting.

  33. 12

Regarding the Confederate flag, I never understood why it was allowed to maintain a continued presence? The South lost the effing war, right? If you go to Vietnam, do you see the flag of South Vietnam being flown? Maybe there’s a history of some type of compromise that I don’t understand, but I always thought by 1866 it should have been stripped from society never to be seen from again.

    • As I understand it, Lincoln (and later Grant) wanted to bring both sides back together as much as possible (mend the Union, etc.). Remember Grant let the Army of Nothern Virginia go home after Lee surrendered, with a musket (and a horse if they had one) to get back and harvest their farms. Reconstruction was hard enough on the confederate states, and I’d guess they decided “let them keep their little flags”. And for several years after the war, the “lost cause” writers were busy revising history to present a romantic picture of the south, a part of which was their flag.

    • Regarding the Confederate Flag. I did a semester at a southern college, and, luckily, married a wonderful woman from a southern family. Even 20+ years ago, I had questions. These are some of the anecdotal viewpoints I picked up on.
One reason it remained in circulation is the look, it is an aesthetically pleasing design. Kudos to the Army of Northern Virginia, they had a quality vexillogist on staff.
At some point after reconstruction was given up on, the flag morphed from a flag defending the practice of slavery into a symbol of Southern unity and pride. (Remember, this flag was not the flag of the CSA, it was a battle flag) Those folks flying the flag at NASCAR events, in their minds, are flying it for a cultural identity… not racial superiority.
There was also an interpretation of the flag as a symbol of rebellion, particularly youthful rebellion. I spend half of a summer in the 90s playing rugby in New Zealand. I came across the Confederate Flag several times, in shops, on t-shirts, and displayed on the dorm room walls of college kids (both whites and Maoris). I always asked about the flag, and was always told that it represented rebellion/being a rebel. They were even aware what the war was about. Bands like Alabama and Lynyrd Skynyrd used the imagery in their album covers and merch, I have to assume that they were not trying to corner the market on Klan album sales.
Just about all of the people I asked, also agreed that all along very bad people, with very bad ideologies also were using the flag.
General public opinion in the US has only viewed the confederate flag as problematic and a symbol of racial oppression in the past 15-20 years, even that is not an overwhelming majority. But, another observation is that a lot of people who used to fly that flag, are finding substitutes. Join, or Die and the Gadsden Flag work pretty well for those who feel a little rebellious.

I’m not saying all of these thoughts are my own, I’m just offering a perspective. I like discourse, unlike some folks here…

          • “Just about all of the people I asked, also agreed that all along very bad people, with very bad ideologies also were using the flag”
            That part?

          • More like this part: ‘At some point after reconstruction was given up on, the flag morphed from a flag defending the practice of slavery into a symbol of Southern unity and pride.’

‘bad ideologies’ adopted the Confederate flag for their own. There is no ‘rebel’ meaning for most of the country.

          • Think of it this way…maybe…
I can’t tell you what you see or interpret when you see a symbol, no more than you can interpret what i think.
I have a neighbor who proudly has a green flag with a bog yellow 0 on it. I hate it, I judge him over it, and I’d like to set it on fire some days. It symbolizes something very negative to me, but, I be he really appreciates what it symbolizes.

What about calling the game fight for the right (of the state)? Not great but better than most of what I’ve heard. At least it’s a little catchy.

Dee’s actual quote was for the right to live in the state of Oregon.
It would never last as a name for the game.

And, don’t even get ’em started on including “fight” or “battle”, much less “war”.

So it sounds like some chic brought up the civil war name change to Dennis dixon and he was like ya sounds good. So it wasn’t even any of the players originally having a problem with it. It’s almost like they just want to seem like they’re the next Kaepernick and a catalyst for change even tho they hadn’t even considered it until someone had to tell them to be upset. Puke!

This stupid change really bothers me for some reason. It’s amazing how quickly they threw nearly a century of tradition in the garbage because a couple ignorant children were faux upset about the name. I honestly don’t believe that anyone was actually upset about the name. Never in my life have I ever even heard of anyone complain about it. If someone actually WAS offended by the name they should have been educated about their ignorance about what a civil war is and how it’s a nothing more than a descriptive term about the characteristics of a conflict and that the naming never had anything to do with the American civil war. But unfortunately colleges have turned into safe space pandering SJW garbage debt factories instead of actual instructions of higher learning.

    • Yeah, I always took it to be about households that had alumni from both schools, or friends. I never associated it with the US Civil War.

There’s multiple levels of (over) reactionary behaviors on many scales these past several years.

      • I always took it as neighbors being alumni from both school because in my family you aren’t allowed to attend the Yucks school. But same concept.

  38. What do you guys think of Google/Reddit et al banning and deleting channels?

My take: it’s their right, but it’s not a good look or good for business. They’re going to lose a lot of viewers. I’d like to know if it was advertiser pressure (likely since $ talks) or political pressure (they banned Left and Right “extremist” channels, so this seems less the case). Their official reasoning was “hate speech”.

Fairly bearish for these companies. What good is luring back advertisers if nobody is watching because you deleted their favorite content?

    • I’m going with advertiser pressure. It’s been in the news a bit lately that companies are putting more and more pressure on social media platforms to change up their models or risk losing ad revenue.

      https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2020/06/28/facebook-boycott-companies-pulling-social-media-advertising-over-hate-speech/3275328001/

My take, money is the only leverage people have. If you want to host a social media site that doesnt bow down to advertising influence, you better have the capital to run it yourself. People will vote via boycotts when they can organize and spread their boycott message easily(via social media)

      • Agree. The mega cap tech is in trouble either way…advertising is their livelihood. If content creators think their content will be deleted then they won’t create content. If viewers fear their favorite channels will be deleted they won’t allow themselves to get engaged in it. Less hours on the platform all around. They probably should have just found new advertisers and let all channels exist (for the most part…no issue getting rid of Richard Spencer, for example…the rest of the list I saw was questionable).

    • They’re private services, so they can do what they want. I’m sure some of it was fear of backlash like Facebook is getting.

More broadly, I worry this will just cause more societal fragmentation, but that was probably inevitable.

    • 6
      21

I think it is their right and won’t cost them as much business as you think.

Besides, conservatives can go to Parler where the management will protect them from evil facts.

    • But if users favorite content is hate speech, I don’t think any company wants to have ads anywhere near that. Advertisers will follow where they get the most return, but now taking into account social impacts to get a more holistic view.

And the counter argument has always been, nothing is stopping users from creating their own site. They can go out an create a blog with have comments open. I mean look at this blog’s origination…didn’t it come from beavsrblitz forums disagreements or something like that???

      • Agree, this site came to mind for me too, as an example of splintering off from the mainstream and more controlling forum.
Except I’m not sure where wordpress stands on something like this. Do they have policies that will allow them to deactivate sites with certain types of content? I’d imagine if the Taliban tried to organize via wordpress(angrytaliban.com?), WordPress would decline to host them, but I dont know that for a fact.

Social media liability has been a big topic recently. When Twitter started adding disclaimers to the president’s (and other high profile) tweets, it was partially an attempt to help shield them from any libility they aren’t currently protected for by law.
When the president issued an executive order to modify liability laws for social media platforms as a counter, it was to give the twitters and facebook’s of the world less control over the content that gets shared on their sites. The goal was to remove their ability to police their own sites and allow 100% free speech, dangerous or not.
        It’s a pretty messy issue

Free speech means the government (not private companies) couldn’t charge you with crimes for racism, that is it.

F King Alexander takes over the reigns at OSU today.

First point of order, he has re-instated the Civil War name for our rivalry games with Oregon.

Ok, that last part isn’t true.

    • He’s got a lot of work ahead of him with how 2020 has unfolded. Crisis in every part of the university.

Don’t know much about him, but we will learn quite a bit about him in his first 6 months on the job.

Can he navigate the school through a health crisis, a financial crisis and a social crisis all at the same time?

      • Don’t know much about him either.
From what I remember, he started his career in Calif and seemed to have a heavier responsibility load at LSU than OSU (more students/campus’ and the state charity hospitals). He butted heads with the state politicians too.

We’ll see if he made this move thinking he’d coast out his career in a part of the country which has the climate (both political and otherwise) in which he is more comfortable.

One thing sure, he knows how valuable a well performing FB team can be.

      • OSU is in better shape than most places for three reasons.

        1) 4th best rated ecampus in the country.
        2) we are on quarters. OSU has already done a full quarter and most of summer quarter under covid, most semester schools have not done a single full semester.
        3) Our start is almost a month later than everyone. We can sit back and watch/learn while almost every school in the country beta tests for us.

      • “He’s got a lot of work ahead of him with how 2020 has unfolded.”

        Increases Reser capacity to 90,000;
        Requires tailgating culture increase by 5000%;
        Adds caged beavers near opponents entry to field to intimidate them;
        Requires houses near campus to be painted alternating orange and black;
Requires Corvallis to recognize, in order, God, football, country; and
Schedules 2 pre and one late season cupcake annually…

        .

  42. A lot has been made about the speed at receiver this year. I was just curious as to how it stacks up against the rest of the leagues speed at WR. Does anyone have any idea? I’m not really familiar with other teams rosters. I do know USC has a good receiver core but not sure how fast they are. Hopefully our DBs will be used to covering really fast guys and it will help them in coverage against other teams. The best receiver they’ll face will be against ok st.

    • Pretty impossible to say. Unless all the teams run 40# and publish the result we won’t know until we see them get to work.

      • Ya wasn’t sure if someone like nicebeav remembered them when they were recruits and had their 40 times published.

        • I’ve got no idea. I think Irish and Gould were the fastest guys on the team, but Lindsey may have had the fastest cone drill time in the OSU combine awhile back. No idea how we stack up speed wise with other teams. Speed is nice and all, but we gotta prove we can actually catch the ball too. Victor Bolden comes to mind as a guy who had blazing speed, but not exactly great hands

    • I’ve stated before I think the way the WR and DB corps push each could be important for the season, so I agree with you. Can OSU’s tallish DBs run and turn with OSU’s smallish, fast receivers? Can OSU’s smallish WRs separate from tall DBs? Great opportunity for both.

OSU usually has one or two (Cooks & Wheaton) fast WRs, but I doubt they’ve had this much speed across the unit. Somewhere there will always be a OSU matchup advantage, and I think Gebbia is smart enough to take advantage. In one of his interviews, he talked about learning from pro and college QB’s and not only memorizing receivers routes, but understanding WHY they run it (I think Kurt Warner talked to him about that if I recall).

If there’s a season, it should be fun to watch, especially with the tall TEs thrown in as well. Oh what’s that? A wheel route to a RB?!? Lindgren is probably licking his chops. I can’t wait until they get that FB into the game and some plays called for him.

    God forbid!

    • Added surcharge to ticket prices. But only if true. The CDC has been promoting rapid tests for several months and I have yet to here of any being used. Seems like people I know that have been tested have been waiting 4-5 business days for results

          • Interesting, I’ve visited the dentist in the past month but did not get a surcharge. They took my temp at the beginning, asked a few questions and had me sanitize my hands. That was it. They had clear partitions installed at reception and all workers wore masks. The dentist wore a face shield in addition to a mask.

Sounds kind of like bs if there is extra cleaning since it should be done anyway. Kind of infers they did not clean the area before…yikes

          • 4
            1

It’s not BS, the cost of PPE supplies has increased by at least 500%. Dentistry did not use N95 masks, face shields, or chemically treated lab coats before COVID. A lot of insurance plans are starting to cover the surcharge. It’s a real expense to the business. If you want dental offices to stay open and keep you safe, you can pay the $10.

          • I’m not sure where you got $10, but it was a $30 surcharge, which I think is total BS. It’s about a 45% increase over a standard cleaning.

What’s also interesting is they did less work. No polishing, ultrasonic, or water syringe, etc…anything with spray. Cleaning was done in like 30 minutes. So less work, more money. Again, I think this is a socially palatable way to make up for the 3 months of no clients.

          • If it was a $30 surcharge, that’s excessive. $10 is the standard, I work in the industry. It really has nothing to do with the procedures. It’s the extra cost of all the PPE supplies. My company never closed, so we’re not making up anything. The costs per procedure are actually much more than $10, but we need something to help with the high costs. The insurance companies are starting to get on board, so many times there is no out of pocket for the patient now anyway.

  45. Some OK St news, kind of relevant if the game is even played.

Their starting LT retired due to injuries.

Gundy takes a 1M paycut after program review showing his players basically don’t like him. Find his football IQ high but is not personable.

    • Sounds like he also lost a year off the duration of his deal and also decreased his buyout by $1M.
Wonder what his buyout was in the first place? Maybe they’re trying to make it more attractive for another team to swoop in and hire him away?

    • Knew something was going to happen there…he’s probably looking elsewhere. His team will probably bail on him, which is good for the Beavs. Only problem is we probably never get a shot at them.

    • 2
      1

Hey I leaned no season. Sounds like it’s going to be reality. The fact summer doesn’t kill the virus is the deciding factor there. I was 50/50 til we saw what happened in the South.

Shit, I heard magical thoughts and wishful thinking were going to kill it after 15 case? Bearish for Shamans, and US Presidents, everywhere.

I think NFL will play because there’s no responsibility to students, but I don’t see how NCAA can pull it off without spending a lot of $ to isolate the players. At best we get a really F’d up season. I also think many players will outright refuse to play. Huge liability issues having an 18 year old kid get corona and die on a uni’s watch.

Luck o’ da Beavs. Probably our best team since 2006.

      • My guess is they will keep pushing until an athlete dies of covid. Then it will be back stepping to avoid liability.

  46. Is anybody following the Covis19 story in Sweden anymore?
I havent been, but was looking at their daily death toll trends(scroll part way down the page)
While they initially had a fairly high number per day ramp up in April/May, things tapered off during June and now they’re reporting only a small handful per day in early July.
Did they continue with their plan of no lockdown/only social distancing or did it get modified sometime in May/June? I really havent been following, but it sure looks like they’ve pretty much hit herd immunity in that country, at least statistically.
Either that or all of the vulnerable population just died early, so there’s not very many high risk people left.

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/sweden/

    • 1
      1

All I’ve seen, in passing, is their death rates are much higher than their Scandinavian neighbors. Haven’t dug in much more than that.

That entire Country has the population near that of NJ — people need to consider this for various reasons (e.g make sure comparing apples to apples), including the practicality of public health care.

    • 5
      6

They stopped being news in late may because they fell into line with masking, social distancing and some isolation mandates. They ended up with like 8 times the deaths of Denmark and Norway combined which is about the same population. I think some government officials lost their jobs over it.

Either way the narrative of the Sweden method is dead although it’s effects can now be seen all over the US in areas that support fox and Trump.

      • 5
        6

Kinda agree…they’re a disaster from cursory glance.
Also kinda weird Trumpers would support a Socialist Country’s policy…oh wait…

        • 4
          4

What do you not agree with, just curious.

The US has devolved into creative story telling and alternate realities to fit whatever narrative people are pushing. The facts are stark and in our face but we still insist on telling a story to make us feel good for the next hour.

As for socialism we have become what the GOP and moderates always warned us if. A welfare state deeply in debt with nothing but failed policy. Imagine what that money could have done with researched and thought out socialist policy, oh well.

-26.5 trillion in government debt and counting. Nearly 80 trillion in total US Debt.

          • What do you not agree with, just curious.

Not sure of the question given I said I agree.

Yeah, if only that 3 tril they just printed to bail out Wall Street was spent on actually improving the Country…more privatized gains and socialized losses. Until people wake up to the Federal Reserve, and what they’re doing, we’re doomed.

          • I’m not, hence the “kinda” and “cursory”…

I’ve seen the headlines and glanced at the stories, and from what I’ve gathered they’re an absolute disaster compared to their most “apples to apples” neighbors. Open to being “wrong” if wrong doesn’t mean twisting data/stats to fit a narrative.

          • 5
            2

The new narrative we’ll be fed today is we just need to learn to live with it.

Didn’t Bush run one of the largest deficits in history, too?
These modern Republicans are flat out Socialists. Just the facts. Personally, I don’t blame them — I think due to the FED, we’re screwed no matter what Party is in place. Obama was a disaster in that area, too. They all have to keep printing more.

Personally I give many rats asses about economics, and zero rats asses about skin color. If you care about the latter you’re stuck in Neanderthal times or fear-based, and there’s nothing else to say — latent genetic problem and/or fear of losing resources. To me that’s all a distraction to avoid the real issues like the FED destroying the economy. If we had a real economy, blacks, whites, browns, yellows, reds, etc etc would all be flourishing and give two shits about any of this. Economics is everything. Good economy = less social issues, more equality, peace, etc. When resources become scarce is when you see issues flair up.

        • 5
          4

Please expand on how modern republicans are socialist. I’m a middle of the road conservative but very far from socialist. I grew up in Portland and find the city the perfect example of why liberal politics are ineffective. When I visit with my family my wife wants nothing to do with downtown due to the homeless and drug problems there during broad daylight on a weekday.

Also, the economy was doing great pre covid and jobs are now returning. Does that mean you’re voting for Trump based on the strong economy during his presidency? This seems to contradict other posts you’ve made.

          • 4
            2

They love printing money and leaning on the Federal Reserve to hand out checks…more than any administration ever.

#1 reason I voted Trump was he was (rightfully) critical of the FED on the campaign trail. Boy how that changed…the only way he’d get my vote now is if he ended the FED by November.

Every problem (especially homelessness) in this Country either directly or indirectly leads back to the Federal Reserve.

          • 3
            9

LOL at “Trump’s strong economy” claims.

As for socialism of the right.

Republicans socialize the losses of the rich on the back of the poor while privatizing the profits of the rich also earned on the backs of the poor. It is the Republican Party’s primary reason for existing at this point.

Believing socialism is why Portland has a homeless problem is a hilarious position for someone to take. Demonstrates absolutely no research into socialism or what caused America’s homeless problem (hint: it isn’t the implementation of socialism but the reduction of it, see Reagan and de-institutionalization.

            Basically the opposite of socialism.

An OSP trooper approached the man and asked if he was unharmed- while simultaneously displaying the hand signal commonly associated with “okay.” The trooper was wearing a face covering and operating in a noisy environment.”

          • Yeah, while he did give that sign. And honestly given the situation I am giving the benefit of the doubt by saying I don’t think that’s what it was

          • Maybe, but that reality isn’t changing.

We might be able to change the ‘White people rule’ reality though.

YO at 5:16pm “Yeah, while he did give that sign”

          • If you say so.

Do either of you have proof that wasn’t the sign he was giving?

Of course you don’t but attacking me solves your inability to actually prove that wasn’t a white power sign so win for ttw racists!!!!?

          • Or could be open minded adults and accept my position that it probably wasn’t.

Honestly, your position to this post says it all to me.

        • If I could I’d delete my other replies, finally found the full video, I buy that it wasn’t a white power sign.

But no, the last name wouldn’t be relevant to rather it was a white power sign or not. Stephen Miller is Jewish and he is Trump’s top white nationalist general.

Shouldn’t the larger issue be that police history has made my assumption a reasonable one to jump too?

I mean, when State Police act out in public like they are making WTO posts (Kate Brown who is their literal boss can’t even make them wear masks) or quietly telling counter protesters to go inside so they don’t look like they are playing “favorites” when they start making curfew arrests. Both incidents that have happened in Oregon in the last 30 days.

Sorry if I don’t give them the benefit of the doubt.

          • Shouldn’t the larger issue be that everything is devolved into a right or wrong and you have to pick a side? Issues are complicated and opinions vary. Saying an absolute is true at this point is incorrect.

      • I want to see these 2 videos spliced together to really know, could be totally unrelated shots, where’s the guy that shoved him in the other video? He’s not there.

        • In the body cam video, the shover was grabbed by the police and removed from the area, prior to the start of the 2nd video. I dont think there’s any camera trickery going on.

  47. BASEBALL (just for those who stumbled in here thinking they’d find something related to OSU athletics.)

It looks like the Wild Wild West League is planning to open a month long season this coming Saturday. A wood bat league with 4 teams and several Beavers set to play, among them: Cooper Hjerpe, Joey Mundt, Jake Pfennings, Andy Armstrong, and Jake Dukart.

Games to be broadcast on YouTubeLive and FaceBookLive using “unmanned cameras” for safety as well as “strategically placing umpires away from players”.

Yes, Pettibonehead and I were discussing it in a previous thread. Are they still going to play games at Volcano Stadium in Keizer? Marion County is in Phase 2, so there was some talk of letting a few fans in also since gatherings of up to 100 are allowed. I think season ticket holders of the regular league were going to get the first crack.

  48. I’m in Ohio for the holiday and the difference in mask prevalence compared to Delaware is shocking. Very few people in masks here across all demographics, so much so that several mayors in the state just mandated it a few days ago. The only thing I can think of is that DE is closer to NY, so there was a halo effect of people actually being affected or knowing people affected by the virus.

    • 2
      2

There is pretty obvious data on Political bent and masking/distancing by State. Ohio is a swing state but depending on where you are its pretty red or pretty blue. Could just be that.

      • That’s the thing: I’m in an area that, according to the data, should be predominantly mask-wearers. Not the case.

I think this is more an indication of COVID-fatigue than anything else.

  49. 5

Sadly, it seems to be a red/blue scenario. I don’t understand how Doing the right thing Is so hard to do.
You all red Guys know you’ve the same chance of getting the virus as I will.

Just saw this after posting the previous.
Wearing a mask is not a political statement, its an IQ test.
    Absolutely brilliant.

    • And then the cdc puts out articles like this. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article

“Although mechanistic studies support the potential effect of hand hygiene or face masks, evidence from 14 randomized controlled trials of these measures did not support a substantial effect on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza. We similarly found limited evidence on the effectiveness of improved hygiene and environmental cleaning. We identified several major knowledge gaps requiring further research, most fundamentally an improved characterization of the modes of person-to-person transmission.”

I’m conservative and i wear a mask when I go out.

      • Read the article. This is just a review of other past studies. Then there’s this gem: “Most studies were underpowered because of limited sample size, and some studies also reported suboptimal adherence in the face mask group.”

Basically, it’s a review of studies that were of questionable value when they were originally published. Garbage in, garbage out.

Then there’s the fact that we don’t even know if COVID-19 transmission is analogous enough to flu transmission to draw conclusions about COVID from these studies. “We could find no evidence of…” is very different from “does not exist.”

        • You just can’t draw conclusions from the existing data one way or another. My approach when that’s the case is to do what’s intuitive (in this case, wearing a mask), until proven wrong.

          • I’m with you DE. Common sense is the mask provides some type of barrier especially for what comes out of the body. The bummer is not everyone is wearing them or they have them strapped on hanging below their chin. Probably not much help unless everyone is wearing them and wearing them right.

The sad part is we as a country have become so politically crazy that even a pandemic is used for furthering the cause… whatever agenda that is. Instead of pulling the country together the pandemic is one of the things being used to pull the country apart.

          • I’m with you guys, common sense should prevail here. Look at many of the Asian countries. They SD for shit but what’s one thing they all do, wear masks. Can’t be a coincidence that those countries have low death and case rates.

          • Agree on the common sense thing…and the other point that seems obvious to me is that anything is better than nothing.

Any barrier between your face and the world is going to stop some particles. Whether it stops all of them or most of them is up for debate, but it’s all about probability and clearly a mask improves your probability to some extent.

  51. That’s crazy, here’s another quote from that article:

“We did not find evidence that surgical-type face masks are effective in reducing laboratory-confirmed influenza transmission, either when worn by infected persons (source control) or by persons in the general community to reduce their susceptibility.”

Wow, mainstream media like Bloomberg finally picking up on the fact the FED is destroying the economy, and especially the poor. They have been doing this since 2008. Hilarious people thought the economy was “rocking” before Corona. Stocks were; economy wasn’t. Wages down in inflation adjusted terms for 40 years, and especially bad since ’08.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-04/low-income-american-households-suffer-inflation-shock-from-virus?sref=V47xycDY

      • The FED’s balance sheet was about 500 billion under Greenspan, and got up to 700bil or so when he was done. Even in 2008 it was 820bil. It’s now 7 trillion. So I’d say the rate of change in screwing over the poor/savers is not eve close to that era. Back then you could get a return on a bond that beat inflation, too. Also, there was no criticism in the media — they failed to connect the dots. So the Bloomberg article is interesting.

This is what happens when you abandon anti-trust protections and decide corporations aren’t just people but people in a special class that are never required to plan ahead because the government will always bail them out.

The USA is socialist, it’s just socialism for the 1% on the back of the 99%.

The dirty little secret we weren’t taught about our history is that we were revolting against corporate control as much as we were revolting against King George.

I prefer the corporate rules our founders supported (no way would they have agreed that corporations are people). Back then corporate protections were reserved for those providing something the public needed, it wasn’t just a profit machine for the wealthy.

Good point. But im pretty sure you would call them white supremacists. What would you call this group? Im thinking black nationalists would be a apropos.

        • You’re “pretty sure”

Maybe depending the group, white supremacists still have a right to open carry though.

Find any post where I claim otherwise.

Agree, Black nationalists is a good name. Black supremacists might work too. I’d need to look into the group more.

Why is it bad when black men decide to open carry but totally fine when white people do it?

Lol, there you go assuming…..again. Where did i say I had a problem? I encourage the legal carry of firearms.
Remember when you whined about white people carrying firearms in Michigan, well pretty much anywhere for that matter? Kind of weird you all of a sudden have no problem when blacks are doing it.

          • Did I ever say they weren’t allowed?

Or did I just make fun of them? Pretty certain I just made fun of them.

And I stand by making fun of people protesting the government trying to save their lives.

If you can find a quote where I have ever favored banning people from open carry I’ll never post here again, good luck,

This is the story we see from him over and over, same tactic liberals use. Plus he doesn’t even remember an argument he made two days ago (reminds me of Biden). OSU drops the Civil War name. Redskins and Indians likely to drop their names too.

I could see the Indians sticking with their name as long as they get rid of the Chief Wahoo logo. They’ve already minimized it to a small patch.

Redskins is gone. It has always been a terrible name and logo.

    • Saw ealier today that Target and Walmart have ceased ordering Indians and Redskins merchandise, so pretty good bet the whole Indians name goes too.

Was talking with a friend the other day who said the UNLV and Ole Miss Rebels team names won’t last much longer either. I didn’t know this, but apparantly, Ole Miss already tried to replace their mascot 2 years ago, unsuccessfully. Look up the Ole Miss, Tony the Land Shark. I can understand why it didnt catch on, but I guess that is their actual mascot at this point. Not the Rebel soldier.

        • It makes a little more sense after I read the back story. Basically a player several years ago dubbed their defense the landsharks 1 year when they were partucularly good on D, and he had a landshark “fin” he would make with his hands after a big play. So at least there is a little history behind the name. At first I thought they were just going for something generic that couldn’t be found offensive by anyone.

Does anybody have a problem with the Trojans being the mascot st USC? Seems Christians have a good case for that name being offensive.

          • I would think Trojans are pre-Christianity.

Even if they called themselves the romans I don’t think that would be an issue.

    • Cleveland Indians should switch back to the Spiders. It’s a historical name, and there’s already a cool logo they could easily make some minor tweaks to in order to modernize it.

      • Agreed, Spiders is a great name. Although overall I am okay with Indians if they work with a local tribe. Don’t the Spokane Indians do this? It is also what I’d like to see the NHL team in Seattle do so they can use the Totems name. Although I for the life of me can’t figure out why Totems would be controversial in the first place.

Redskins, yeah, that is a slur and should have never been allowed to make it to 2020. I like Pigskins as the change but know that won’t be the choice.

        • Just shows you ignorance. Considering the natives to that area didn’t even make totems. Totems didn’t originate from the Puget Sound area, they were from North West Coast Natives, North of Seattle. I thought of all people, you would understand this, but just goes to show.

          • A) How does that “prove my ignorance” since I never made any claim that natives made totems in the Puget Sound area did I?

            B) Of all people? Fuck off.

            C) Seattle Totems is currently the name of a hockey team in Seattle right now, today (while about 15 miles north of Seattle anyway)

If Totems is inappropriate so is the name Seahawks. So I ask you, where is the line?

I know my line is at racial slurs. Where is yours? What other names should be banned?

      • Should ditch all Native American logos, team names, etc. They don’t want it. Just stick to white people or animal mascots. Seems to be the safest route.

    • The Chicago Blackhawks are possibly changing their Indian head logo to an actual hawk leaving everything else the same. Their logo was voted best logo in hockey in 2015. We will see what happens.

  56. Anyone remember the campaign for Ole Miss to adopt Admiral Akbar as their mascot? Maybe time to resurrect that plan, haha. With a single mascot change they could remain the Rebels and strip out the controversy.

    • That’s why schools are going to hybrid models. Need the $$ from foreign students. OSU may benefit as they are in a lower risk area.

    • After reading the link, it doesn’t appear very many foreign students will be exiled. The article reports a study of 1,000 schools wherein 60% are planning “in person instruction” and another 23% a hybrid model. It also points out that:
Students attending schools implementing a hybrid model can take more online classes or credits, though their school must certify “that the program is not entirely online, that the student is not taking an entirely online course load this semester, and that the student is taking the minimum number of online classes required to make normal progress in their degree program.”

  57. I see Yahoo is up with a list of the “top 25” QB’s. Okie States Spencer Sanders comes in at #15.
“Sanders had an up-and-down redshirt freshman season, throwing for 2,065 yards with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 11 games. He also rushed for 628 yards,
Once he shores up his ball security, Sanders could become one of the most feared playmakers in college football.”

Surprising, for a national list, nobody from Eugene on the list. Phil being careful with his $$ ?

What is causing so many people to lose their minds lately?
Been seeing more and more conspiracy theory BS popping up in my facebook feed from old friends who I don’t necessarily talk with much, but have known for years.
One of my favorites was somebody straight up claiming they really think Katy Perry is some satanic agent, and that she is actually JonBenet Ramsey. Apparantly the story is Jonbenet was abducted by people in the Jeffrey Epstein circle and then brainwashed to spread their hidden satanic messages among pop culture by making her become a successful pop star.

This is somebody I’ve known for years who served in our US Air Force. And they’re being completely serious with this belief.

      • It’s concerning. Same person(and several others I am “friends” with) post stuff constantly throughout the day. Much is of a similar nature, often just posts shared without commentary. I wonder if these people somehow get their feed stuck on autopilot, posting garbage throughout the day without their knowledge? Or if they’re actually physically posting up to 100 times per day. The volume is pretty amazing.

I’m afraid to ask in case they actually have just lost their minds.

        • My brother does this and it is him posting. Drives everyone in the family nuts. Everyone that is stays on Facebook anyway.

I’d click the unfollow button if I were you (assuming it still exists) then you remain friends with them but have to go to their page to see any of their content.

    • That conspiracy has been around for years.

I am of the opinion that nothing has changed about the people but now they can all find each other and form groups that convince them they are right no matter how crazy the conspiracy.

I mean, Qanon believers are winning primaries all over the country.

      • Oh, and Epstein island has a submarine entrance, and Joe Biden owns land on a neighboring island as well as a submarine, so he could visit Epstein Island more secretly than those who flew there.
        It all makes sense now.

          1

I hadn’t heard that angle of the conspiracy yet. But it does make me feel that much more confident in my decision to ditch Facebook years ago.

    • Feel bad for the content moderators. That’s all they see.
They all develop ptsd and then start to believe all the stuff they see. Then get kicked to the curb by the companies.

      • It’s reminding me of a coworker at my office who I traveled with to Colorado for a week in 2018, for training. We had to share a rental car, so had plenty of time to chat to kill the time on our drives.
Social media came up and I mentioned running that beavrecruiting account and then he shared with me that he ran a few twitter accts too. He was a little sheepish about it, but let me know 1 was a MAGA account, and he also ran 3 different conspiracy theory accts.
At the time I didnt think much of it, since he’s an odd dude and I figured he meant more like Area 51 type conspiracy sites. But the more more I think of it, this guy is actually one of these reclusive types who spend their time spreading disinformation to their followers almost like it’s as much of a hobby as beavrecruiting is for me.
Makes me want to find out which handles he uses to see what kind of following he has.

        • 3
          1

It is disturbing, and probably more prevalent than I’d like to know. Like you said, he “sheepishly” admitted to it. Many probably don’t, and social media provides means for anonymity if people choose.

Years ago there was a film called (I think) “Manufacturers of Doubt,” and the gist of it was, there are groups who aren’t out to prove their argument, just create enough doubt about their opponents position to create indecision or opposition. Its an easier task because it plays into human nature.

These conspiracy theories also play into people’s desire to believe what reinforces their views. Critical, constructive thought and argument are not encouraged in our society.

It seems to me like many conspirancy theories could be cast into serious doubt just talking about the complexities and probabilities those complexities could be pulled off and maintained. Some will turn out to be true, but most are absurdly unrealistic.

I tried facebook for a few months and abandoned it. Its good for some things (keeping in touch with family, friends) but it also encourages many unproductive behaviors. This site is as close to social media as I get. Sure, there’s anonymity here, my hypocrisy isn’t completely lost on me. But critical thought and argument are at least encouraged.

          • In response to both Bill and you.
I don’t know if he believed in the conspiracy theories, because I didn’t actually see the content or accts he used. I should have dug deeper.
Also, he definitely said “accounts”, in the plural sense. Made it sound like he ran at least more than 1 MAGA account and 3 or more conspiracy theory accounts.

You have to imagine there are many other people who gravitate towards this type of posting using multiple accounts to spread their message. Why isn’t one conspiracy theory account enough? Is there any benefit to managing multiple, other than to cast a wider net and give the impression that there are more people into this stuff than there really are? It helps it become a giant echo chamber of chaotic BS being spread around.

          • Wasn’t there a conspiracy theory floated here that angry was actually posting as several accounts? Basically drumming up pro or counter arguments to his own hot takes? Am I imagining/mis-remembering this?

Anyway the multiple bot syndrome is so prevalent that you can’t even blame the ruskies anymore. Facebook is garbage, Twitter is awash in litter, it seems like all social media is a waste, curious if people will ever give up on them.

    • The thing of it is there have been plenty of conspiracies that have been proven to be true but the term conspiracy theory now is associated with these totally outlandish ones. So if you believe in a JFK, or mlk conspiracy you’re grouped in with satanic occult believers and discredited. Even if declassified documents have shown certain conspiracies existed.

      • 2
        1

Some turn out to be true. There’s healthy skepticism when facts point the direction of conspiracy, and then the people who fall for every conspiracy theory, even the weakest ones lacking any real facts (e.g. cloud seeding, etc). Scientists have pinpointed traits in the latter. I have a friend like this…he literally believes everything that’s anti-government. I can tell he kind of gets off on the fear. Maybe it’s like watching a horror movie or something. But from what I’ve seen overall paranoia is a key trait.

        • 7
          1

I was just discussing this with someone a few days ago. I think humanity has reached a point where we have so much information available to us and so many “versions” of the truth accessible, that we’ll continue to be less and less able to agree on the basics. The world is too big and the stuff we used to hide behind the curtain can’t be hidden anymore (e.g everything that wasn’t taught in history class that undermines the Manifest Destiny narrative). The problem is now being compounded by most people’s everyday situation getting progressively worse. When we feel a loss of control, we need someone to blame (Trump, the Swamp, China, white people, etc.) and our whole worldview shifts to accommodate this method of self-therapy.

I can’t recall the name of it, but there’s a cognitive bias where we attempt to find patterns or narratives even when they aren’t there. All of this is a strong tailwind for conspiracy theories, which offer a narrative explanation and a scapegoat. Plus, it’s easy to self-justify directing anger toward racists and pedophiles. They deserve it, right?

The natural response to this sort of environment is absolute control of information channels by the government, the way China attempts to do it. There will be many people who will actually beg for this, assuming the Experts and people in power can save us from ourselves.

I’m not sure what the answer is, other than to go back to advice my parents gave me: worry about what you can control, not what you can’t. Maybe we all need to make our worlds a little smaller and focus on the simpler manifestations of these issues closer to home instead of getting swept up in the wider, more complex mess going on at the National and global levels. Your BLM support tweet is honestly not going to change the world, but the conversations you have with your parents, grandparents, neighbors, or whoever might. If it weren’t for national news, Trump’s platform, no one would care about Trump and he would have far less psychological power over people. Even the racist or pedophile next door is more than just a label when it’s someone you know: they’re a person with a problem, and hating them won’t solve that problem.

        • I know someone quite like that. He loves disasters, spends hours looking for hints of an impending one – to say he is having a good time right now sounds unfair, but he abounds with statistics, country analyses. Avoid him at all costs!!

I blame it all on the prevalence of prescription mental health drugs. We’re are a nation of tweakers, believing and doing weird shit.

      • Insurance doesn’t want to pay for ongoing therapy, so that contributes to having just a general practitioner prescribe meds after a 20 min appointment and say see ya in 3-4 months.

    • This would be good timing for a Devon Williams tell all. What really went down with him joining the team and then not, or maybe he never did. I’d love to hear Smith do any interview.

I’d also like to get the real Yeskie story. Maybe he will speak about his departure in a few years.

  61. Watching the Beavs Cal hoops replay is almost like the real thing when you can’t remember who won the first go around.

  62. Received some video clips from last weeks Pylon 7vs7 tournament that was won by the Southern Oregon team and Vidlak. I should receive more later today and will figure out a way to share some of it. It’s from a camera angle that’s high above the field and behind the QB, so you can see the whole play develop. Vidlak makes some really impressive throws from what I’ve seen so far.

    • Was reading it last night. I’ve always thought pattern recognition was an important survival skill. Makes sense if someone has the ability to quickly scan and analyze data and make sense of it, they would have a better toolset for handling data anamolies. Thinking of the brain as a sort of muscle, those who exercise it more regularly should tend towards having a brain that is better prepared to sort through the BS.
The thing I don’t understand is the guy I mentioned earlier is in a careeer where he programs and analyzes data for a living. He’s pretty good at what he does, so I wouldn’t cstegorize him as somebody who can’t recognize patterns, etc. I wonder if him running these twitter conspiracy theory accounts is less about his own beliefs in the information, and more about having some form of power over his followers? Like let’s see what we can get people to believe? How far can I push them and influence them?

        • I feel like there’s a line between trolling to get a reaction and trolling to influence. I guess in both cases, the outcome is getting a desired reaction.

Maybe it’s more the intent? I don’t know, but social media has given us all more access to people for giving and receiving trolling communication.

      • There was a guy years ago who worked a good job and would go into chat rooms and night and convince vulnerable people to commit suicide…they think he convinced dozens to do it. He got off on the power…
I forget the guys name, but he was featured on those true crime shows.

      • I read something once recently that likened conspiracy theorists to people who feel that they are “in on” some great mystery. It’s like they are in the “know” and have gained some enlightenment, where as the greater public are all losers who haven’t “woken up”, aka sheeple.

        • I think it is similar to the studies that show that people will accept their standard of living dropping as long as their is another group doing even worse.

I think for many of these folks they see these conspiracies as a chance to be part of the “in” group.

Sadly these beliefs isolate them even more from the people in their real lives which reinforces their need to believe in the conspiracy.

And others just find conspiracies fun.

And note: I do agree with the people that say some conspiracies are real, lots of them are. 100% true but Qanon, Flat Earthers, Anti-vaxxers, etc…. are quite obviously nonsense.

        1

Flat Earther’s are the best, they even made a documentary where they did a very good experiment that proved the Earth was curved and still won’t believe it.

        • I sometimes peek into what I call “nutlog” on Facebook. One “nut” in particular is located in Salem, OR and styles herself as a “talk show host, ordained minister and professor.” Last week she urged her small group of followers to make sure they had their guns loaded and ready on July 4th because Antifa was going to use the night time fireworks noise as cover to kill Christians all over the country. I guess Antifa must have decided she was on to them and cancelled the slaughter?

Also… Joe Biden is the anti-Christ and any Corona virus vaccine will contain metallic strips, so that Bill Gates can track you and down load artificial intelligence into your brain via 5G towers. She insists that if Trump isn’t reelected it’s all over for America. Fun stuff.

      • I think a lot of conspiracies are the direct result of YouTube documentaries and even others. They are deemed as entertainment so they don’t have to cite sources sources for their info. They can even hire actors that appear with dr. Or professor in front of their name because it’s just a movie where they’re acting. I think there is a short doc on it called “the art of deception “. Its pretty good if you’ve got 30 mins. Basically it turns out all of the experts were actually actors and shows how easy it is to spread disinformation through videos and documentaries.

      • Even with a big endowment if their annual budget is sustained by revenue they don’t expect to generate from on-campus services next year, that endowment can be drained in a hurry. This could also be part of a broader strategy to try to stay out in front of potential issues. They’re probably making cuts in other areas and have to cut athletics, too, so they don’t look like they’re favoring the AD.

It’s not a bad move for any university to reevaluate their budget at this point. As angry observed, the bubble is over and they all know it.

I understand that but they expect but what is the point of having a 27.7 billion dollar investment if you aren’t going to use it to continue to create opportunities for your students during a crisis?

          Again, 27.7 billion.

If this was OSU with an endowment that is half their yearly budget I’d agree but schools like Stanford should be able to weather the storm and come out the other side okay.

Stanford’s endowment is 4 times their yearly budget.

Kind of feel like the point of having all that money is to not make cuts based on short term issues.

Now, if they think this is a long term issue so be it. I am far from convinced Stanford as an institution thinks they are in trouble.

    • Dammit, really thought we’d get them in sailing this season…

I note they did not drop Martini Making or either the Red Wine or White Wine teams….

  63. On the recruiting front, I’m not totally sure how this is allowed during a recruiting dead period, but oregon football staff Don Johnson visited the state of Mississippi last week, as the ducks secured a commitment from a player who lives in Mississippi(4* WR Isaiah Brevard).
And they aren’t exactly shy about the trip.

The NCAA has had D1 recruiting in a “Dead Period” since March, at least through August 31st. Meaning no in person recruiting is allowed for any team through this period.
Virtual is allowed, but why travel clear to Mississippi for a virtual visit?

We’re inching closer to my prediction of no season…
Only hope for a season, IMO, was if Summer killed this virus. It didn’t.

      • There will be a season of some sort. That’s a guarantee. Whether it’s fall, spring, conference only, division only, it’s going to happen. Non conference is dead for sure.

They should tell the south to stop spreading the virus or there will be no football.

Yeah, Japan has 2% unemployment and hardly any cases because everyone wore masks from the start. Almost no affect. Disciplined society that wore masks from the start.

Sean Dolittle had a good quote along these lines, that sports are a reward for a functional society. We’re non functional due to poor leadership at the top, and people who think a mask infringes their rights. Society is one giant thick skull. So, we won’t get the rewards of a functional society.

“We’re trying to bring baseball back during a pandemic that’s killed 130,000 people [in the U.S.] We’re way worse off as a country than where we were in March when we shut this thing down. … We haven’t done any of the things that other countries have done to bring sports back. Sports are like the reward of a functional society, and we’re trying to just bring it back, even though we’ve taken none of the steps to flatten the curve, whatever you want to say. … We just opened back up for Memorial Day. We decided we’re done with it.”

We’d probably be mostly past this thing if everyone wore masks. Instead (without masks) they partied and protested in the streets, and made statements to stick it to the man by not wearing a mask.

P.S. Obviously totally disagree we get a season. NFL yes, but college I lean no at this point unless something drastically changes. The summer killing the virus (people wearing masks sure would have helped) was the only hope for that. I pray I’m wrong, but the liability alone is enough to squash the season. Will be a lot of balking from players and their parents to put life at risk for no pay, etc. Students in too much in jeopardy. Etc. Just a disaster.

          • This mask thing is ridiculous, people are just lazy.

As a retailer, I try to comply, and most people also comply. The first couple of days of OR requirement I had to remind people, since then people are wearing masks, no issues to speak of. A coupe of ‘FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!’-types, but for the most part, people were on board.

Today, 10 customers so far, three I had to remind them masks are required. ‘Oh I forgot.’ ‘Mine’s in the car.’ It’s been a week, how have you forgotten already? Like are they burned out after a week? We all want some normalcy, I get it, but damn, why can’t people have some discipline?

          • Even dumber considering there is sinage everywhere.

I have to enter people’s houses on a weekly basis for work and I’m always masked up and gloved. First questio is always, “Do we have to wear a mask?”.

No you don’t, only I have to butttttttttt werre all a shitload safer if you open all the windows and mask up.

  64. Any film evaluators out there want to give their input on 2021 TE/DE Carson Cota?
Son of former duck Chad Cota, and his brother Chase plays WR at UCLA. He’s also Brady Breeze’ cousin. Football runs in the family.
Likely won’t end up at oregon since they already have their TE recruits for this class. UCLA hasn’t offered yet. Wonder if he’s another one of those in-state guys who may get overlooked this year due to Covid limiting camps and possibly affecting the HS football season too?

Prep Redzone rates him as the 4th best player in the state.(after Rawlins Kibonge, Keith Brown and Damir Collins)

    https://247sports.com/player/carson-cota-46047390/

    • Not a good TE at the fbs level unless in a run heavy scheme. H back maybe?

Tweener as a 4-3 DE. Not a fit for the 3-4. Would be decent with a g5 school.

I’d say he projects better as a offensive tackle at a p5 school. Has the frame and quick feet to play OT. Of course seeing sr film could change his projection.

      • Thanks for taking the time to review it.
One of those guys the recruiting sites hyped up early, but then teams seemed to back off their interest. Picked up an oregon offer very early but sounds like that is no longer on the table.

    • No idea. It just doesn’t make sense to use a scholarship on a position where we already have a bunch of talent. Might make a little sense if Trey Lowe and Harrison aren’t granted a waiver and have to sit this year. If it does happen, I would think the ruling for those players will have to happen first before we find out anything.

A funny letter from awhile ago.

    Dear Mr. Page:

I agree with our Native American population. I am highly jilted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.

Let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves, and the Cleveland Indians

If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60’s alive. Gone. It’s offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men’s lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels, or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.

As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something other than “the Beavers (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???

I always love your articles and I generally agree with them.
As for the Redskins name I would suggest they change the name to the “Foreskins” to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Washington DC.

        • Once great about that article is this so called Christian claims Democrats are doing everything Donald Trump is actually doing.

And anyone that doesn’t know what the protesters want is either lying or stupid.

      • If you can separate the baby from the bath water here I found the article had some interesting things concerning dividing and conquering.
For the record I hate both parties. They both cater more their special interests than to the people they supposedly serve… us.

It’s been going around for some time and now appears to be in danger of spreading widely. I refer not to Covid-19, but to Donald-20, or, to use its pseudoscientific name, Trump Derangement Syndrome. Research has shown that TDS appears in five stages, each of advanced intensity. Perhaps there will be some value, if not promise of diminishment, in setting these parameters out for public awareness.
The cause of TDS is clear enough—Donald Trump, his looks, his manner, his nearly every utterance. So far there is no known cure. Ventilators are unnecessary in TDS, for people who progress beyond the first stage tend to vent quite vigorously on their own.

In Stage One, the afflicted has decided before 2016 that Donald Trump has serious, even strenuous, character flaws that disqualified him for the presidency or any other public office. Voting for him was never possible. For Stage One sufferers, a second Trump term could have effects that are frightening to contemplate. Stage One patients view the Trump presidency as a blotch in American political history.
In Stage Two, one dwells upon Donald Trump’s looks. One has put a fair amount of thought into the architecture of his hairdo, wondering how much time each morning he must devote to its re-creation and whether he employs a stylist to help. One notices that the length of his neckties covers up his ample alderman as does the way he sits, leaning forward in his chair. Photographs of him in golf apparel are studied for what they reveal of the impressive breadth of his backside. The smugness of his smile is registered, the smallness of his hands always noted.
In Stage Three, one is ready to believe anything—anything pernicious or salacious, that is—about Mr. Trump and to reject anything he has done that might be good for the country, if only because he is the man who did it. One is ready to believe that he diets exclusively on the meat of endangered species, that there is something weirdly illicit about his relationship with Vladimir Putin, that he secretly admires Kim Jong Un’s wardrobe. For Stage Three sufferers, nothing about President Trump can be totally disbelieved.
As for those of Donald Trump’s policies that, coming from another president, one might be pleased about, these are rejected in Stage Three derangement syndrome. Israel shouldn’t count on the allegiance of Mr. Trump. The revival of the American economy, before Covid-19 sent it cratering, was owing not to Mr. Trump but to President Obama. The lowering of black and Hispanic unemployment figures under the Trump administration is scarcely to be believed. Nor is the utility of his legislation reforming prisons or of his creating opportunity areas in black neighborhoods, if only because it happened under Donald Trump, who is, patients say, clearly a racist. In Stage Three derangement syndrome, if Donald Trump is for any specific policy, one is automatically against it; if he is against it, one is for it. Case not so much closed as never really opened.
In Stage Four, one imputes evil to Mr. Trump. One believes he became president of the United States to boost his hotel business. One is certain he has it in mind to create a dynasty, with Don Jr. and Jared Kushner waiting to succeed him as president-emperor. Even should Mr. Trump lose the forthcoming presidential election, Stage Four derangement syndrome sufferers believe he is unlikely to depart the White House willingly and is not beyond using military force to keep himself in power. Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, Mao—for people with Stage Four derangement syndrome, Donald Trump is clearly a figure in their line.
In Stage Five TDS, one is weighted down with all the symptoms of the first four stages, but brings to them an added choleric intensity of anger. At the mere mention of the name Donald Trump, unprintable expletives issue out of one’s foam-flecked lips. One’s skin flushes, veins appear on one’s forehead, one’s hands tremble, one loses all powers of speech.
Still, the nice thing about Trump Derangement Syndrome is that to prevent catching or spreading it, you don’t have to wear a mask or always be washing your hands or practice social distancing. All you have to do is turn off your television set.
Mr. Epstein is author, most recently, of “Charm: The Elusive Enchantment.”

  66. Someone in my office recently tested positive for Covid and I called my Dr office and they asked if I had close and direct contact with that person. Of course I couldn’t tell them because of HIPPA laws, they can’t tell me at work who tested positive. So, I went and got tested this afternoon. I have no symptoms and am probably beyond the incubation period for the virus. I should know by this Saturday what the results are. Anyone else been tested and how long did it take before results were available?

    • A neighbor friend and her daughter both got tested as a precaution because they both had to visit the dr for strep.
Their results took 14 days, haha.
This was in Portland, via Quest Diagnostics lab.
At that point, you’re either recovered or in ICU knocking on death’s door.

Sorry, hope that doesnt come off as me making light of your situation. Just laughing at the ridiculously long wait times for these stupid tests.
      “SLOW THE TESTING DOWN!!”

        • For a typical case, you’re looking at a progression of symptoms lasting around 14 days. The unlucky people who develop complications like pnuemonia will see it drag out longer. But that’s the vast minority of positive cases.

I still stand by those zinc supplements. If you start to feel any symptoms, start taking those ColdEze lozenges and stay up on your multi vitamin.

          • I swear by zinc lozenges too. Makes a huge differences with regular colds and flus.

In fact, I got sick in Feb with what might have been COVID. It was extremely mild, BUT I was able to hit it hard with zinc at the very start. What makes me suspect COVID is that it lingered for about 2 weeks, which is very unusual for me. I get sick a lot (2-3 times a year) but it never lasts longer than 4-5 days.

    • A friend of mine was tested, took about 10 or 12 days. That was pretty early in this situation though, late March so maybe that info is outdated.

      Good luck though!

    • I’ve been test twice, one was done at a state run site and it took 2-3 days, second was at urgent Care clinic and it was a 15 minute rapid test. This is in Tennessee

      • I was tested about a month ago. Never left my car in NW Bend, got the negative result the next day. It’s coming to Central Oregon, ain’t no way to stop with so many tourists and an overall lackadaisical attitude with the locals.

    • Results depend on who is doing the testing. Legacy was taking a week plus to turn around results. Locally Samaritan switched to local lab with 14 hour results. Seems like a YMMV scenario

    • Just read an article that talked about Labs not being able to keep up with the number of tests being used right now. Said that it is definitely talking longer. As of a couple weeks ago in Los Angeles / Orange County area it was taking about 3 to 4 days. But not sure this week.

    • Last week, he offered Adlee Blackblock a scholly. She’s from Trinity Christian, a school in Texas with a 650 school population. I’ve seen some of her videos and she reminds me of Sabrina and kind of resembles her too. She’s 6’0″ and a great perimeter game and multi-skilled player. I’m guessing that SR is using Taylor Jones’s connection in Texas to bring her to OSU. She’s in the 2022 class. If you haven’t watched her video, check her out in YouTube and just search the name. After watching, let me know what you think. I think she’s going to be quite a player and hopefully SR brings her to OSU…..I’m betting he does.

  67. Keep seeing hs football players on twitter posting that their local area has already made the decision to postpone fall sports till the spring. Have seen it from New Mexico and North Carolina so far, I’m sure there are others.

Also saw that Mayor Garcetti in Los Angeles is warning of another potential city wide lock down effort if cases and hospitalizations continue to rise. If that happens, it will mean no UCLA or USC football most likely, which means this whole Pac12 “conference only” scheduling idea will have more big holes to fill.

I think the writing is on the wall for college football.

In addition, been looking at the data modeling the health care organization I work for has been putting together, to help better prepare for the coming months. Their models for “only social distancing and masking” are predicting a huge ramp up in cases and hospitalization in California between the end of Summer and Jan 2021. And then a pretty significant downward curve starting in late January.(herd immunity?)
They also have models predicting the same info if California goes to a 1 month on lockdown, 2 month off rolling schedule, and another for a 2 on, 1 off schedule, which don’t have such extreme highs and spread things out more.
Hate to say it, but the fact they are even creating these models indicate that these are options the local governments are already considering. I’m not looking forward to the fallout when they realize most people and businesses won’t be willing to comply.

    • Yeah, no football. Ridiculous luck o’ da Beavs given it’s our best team since 2006. I don’t see how Spring will matter, either. It’s not like it goes away.

Pro sports can get around the liability and risk a lot easier, so I think we see the NFL but not NCAA.

I’m starting to think ~2 years (viable vaccine not some rushed hack job) before we seen NCAA football again. At least we’ll have the BYU advantage of 28 year old players.

      • Agree, Spring sports would only introduce another set of issues. It feels more like a carrot being dangled out there but one that will never eventually be reached.
The models I spoke of related to Northern California specifically(southern is apparantly in worse shape)
With only social distancing in place, they’re predicting around 900 daily admits at the peak, hitting in late December. That same curve shows a dramatic drop off in daily admits where they’re expecting only about 50 daily admits by June 2021. Keeping in mind this is internal estimates for a single provider. I cant share the link because it is internal.

You can find another tool at this link for the California Governmental models. Check the curve for cumulative deaths across time. Currently it’s showing a little under 7K for Cali.
With only social distancing they predict about 122k by October and still rising at that point. One state, at 122k deaths.
(Info found under the “scenarios” tab)

        https://calcat.covid19.ca.gov/cacovidmodels

      • For real! Wasn’t Oregon supposed to play Ohio state this year too? They finally schedule a tough out of conference team only to never have to play them.

Sux for Rashed had a good chance to break more records. I also truly believe that he thinks the team was going to be good and wanted to be a part of it and “leave this place better”.

        • Oregon schedules tough OCC. Auburn 2019, Nebraska 2017 (they were decent when the game got scheduled), Virginia & Nebraska 2016, MSU 2015 and so on and so forth. They usually have atleast two powder puffs but so do most P5.

Hope Ham can make a mark with just conference schedule. If he shows up in the same form as the mid year last WSU’s QB should be jittery.

      • Valid question. They didn’t have much for modeling early on because everything was so new and happening in real time, but as more and more data becomes available they were able to put that together to come up with these models. This is the first time I’ve seen these for my organization. They shared it pretty widespread around the organization this week, i think to get the message out that we need to prepare for the worst case scenarios, since we are a health care provider and we can’t plan around hope of a best case scenario.
If older models existed, i never saw them so I can’t say if they were close to accurate.

2 independent sources(my organization and the CA Government models) are both pointing towards a pretty big uphill battle coming for California though. It very well could be they will point to the worst case scenario as a visual aid to help encourage people to take precautions now and practice better public health. Also to minimize the element of surprise with another lockdown.

        • Nicebeaver:

What is your organization using for a mortality rate number for COVID? US data is still garbage…I can’t fathom how we got to the point of combining active infection data with the presence of antibodies. Was that just a screwup (hard to believe), or was it by design? If by design, who stands to benefit? It just muddies the water and renders the data almost unusable.

          • I’m on the financial side rather than medical, so I’m not too involved with calculating or being exposed to the work around mortality.
I do have some reporting duties around pandemic reinsurance where we have to compile reugularly updated data regarding Covid patient activity.
There are pretty specific definitions used to cstegorize patients, and those definitions are set at the federal level. Confirmed/Person under Investigation/Ruled Out are the 3 main categories. The confirmed category requires either a confirmed diagnosis or a confirmed positive lab test. Until you receive either of those, you land in “PUI”.

The definition of PUI has shifted over the past few months, where people who were ruled out absent a lab test were still considered “PUI” for most of March/April/May. But then they got converted to “Ruled Out”. People in that category made up about 1/3 of the Covid patients we treat, so you saw a big shift in late May from PUI to Ruled Out.

But the Confirmed definition has remained pretty steady.
As far as I know, antibody testing doesn’t factor into these figures for the reporting I’m doing. Only lab tests for active cases.

Probably not very accurate but I would say that’s due to lack of data and knowledge at the time. Models generally use similar historical events as a baseline. But this has turned out to be something else.

Unknowns from the start was how contagious it was (and how long a person was contagious), how lethal it was, how it was transmitted. The absolute game changer was people who were asymptomatic. So a very contagious virus x asymptomatic carriers x higher lethality equals uncontrollable spread and fatalities.

Models now should be directionally more accurate as we learn more about the virus. I think all the variables are known but how to weight each one is debatable.

Unknowns are how effective masks are (should have some effect but to what degree)?, how extended periods of time social distance if effective? If caught early, can treatments reduce hospitalization and or death? Is herd immunity a thing in this case?

      • True, if we just wear masks we can still have those things. If we assume mask use cut infection rate by 25% and everyone started wearing masks today we would be below 30k daily infections by August 20th (assuming peak infections at 100,000 reported on July 20th). By September 20th we would be under 10,000.

        • Americans are stubborn, among other problems, so we won’t.
Japan should be the model. So disciplined…you could say overly obedient even. But boy does having a solid mindset, as a culture, work with this type of thing.

          • Yes many if us are stubbirn, entitled, lazy and selfish…much like petulant children.

Just like a misbehaving child covid will put us in timeout until we improve our behavior. The longer we act foolish the more toys we lose.

        • I have some friends that fall into the “i’m too macho to wear a mask” category. They like to say wearing the mask reduces their oxygen intake and makes breathing more difficult/could cause them respiratory issues, therefore they choose not to wear one for their own safety.
Same guys wear masks routinely when working on construction projects where there are fumes/sawdust/asbestos in the work environment. Never heard a complaint like that before Covid.

  68. Saw a story trending today, Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue this year will feature an openly transgender model for the first time.
Reminds me of the good ol days in Junior High, when you’d get your softcore SI magazine in the mail. It was the only reason you had a Sport Illustrated subscription from your school magazine drive.
But back then, you had to guess which models were transgender. Now it’s out in the open.

  69. Any other areas dealing with abnormal heat? In CO it’s brutal. Grass went dormant (hopefully not fully dead) this past week after 14 straight days of 95 plus. We have a sprinkler system and run it every other night for 30 minutes or so…still…not enough. Water bill is getting out of control, so not sure what to do.

Our 15 day forecast is another 93 plus straight days.

I was reading about it here: https://www.wired.com/story/how-a-heat-dome-forms/

    • Grass usually comes back once there is moisture again; of course if there is not moisture for months and months . . . Mow it a little high so the roots don’t burn. Take care of your garden. Water issues are already dire – not sure how long lawn culture will last in places.

      • You’re in MT, correct? That’s not too far — are you dealing with the same issues?

I haven’t mowed in nearly two weeks for these reasons. Trying to keep it long, but it appears to have stopped growing and simply went dormant.

I’m not sure what to do about the garden. So far it’s been tremendously productive (got first zucchini yesterday, tomatoes are getting huge, beets look great, and the potatoes even formed berries, which I hear is rare)…everything looks great somehow. Getting a little arrogant as a 1st time gardener, and that means disaster is probably looming…lol.

I was thinking about putting shade (not sure what to do…was thinking cardboard hack job for now) over it during the peak sun hours. Any suggestions on that?

        • Montana is in the 80s just now. Your lawn will be fine. Zucchini – joke – visitor to someone in a very small town asked why the parked car was being locked – didn’t seem necessary in such a tiny town. Driver/host: that’s so no one puts zucchini into the car.

Are you overhead watering your garden? Big waste.

          • No, underground/drip irrigation system for the garden. Sprinklers run off that same system.
It’s about as efficient as possible. It still sucks.

      • Yeah been considering that, but my lady is athletic and loves running routes in the Fall!
Pretty big yard that’s good for that.

$100 water bill is absurd, though. Not going to put up with this another year.

    • I’ve been letting clover slowly take over my lawn. It stays green much longer than grass and it’s great for attracting bees. Might even benefit your garden at the same time

      • Nice.
I’m not OCD at all about the lawn just trying to keep it normal not golf course. It’s proving challenging.
I might just have to give up.

        • I suggested clover yesterday and then this morning got stung by a bee while mowing my yard.
I dont think it was one of the honey bees though. Thinking yellow jacket. No stinger left behind and hurts like a mother

          • Haha.
Sorry, man. Those are freaky. This Spring they tried building a nest on our overhang. I sprayed it away with a hose and they went mad. A bunch started gathering material (from the lawn…they’d bury their heads in the lawn then return back to the nest) to rebuild the next day, so I went around and manually stepped on about 20 of them. Terrifying. I knew if I missed I was getting stung.

      • Re: rocks – imo – too sterile, & not in a hot climate, absorbs heat during the day and releases it in the evening – and a mess when there’s snow. There are lots of groundcovers (nb, clover btw is a nitrogen fixer – good) Look up lawn substitutes – you’ll be surprised. I’m seeing a few lawns being changed over. There are lawn plugs for no-mow grasses – grow to 4-5 inches and stop – but they are expensive. Difficult to start from seed. I would send links but you won’t have trouble finding information. Look up native plants of Colorado, too. If your lady wants a track -create it with plants. If you think your water bills are high now . . .

Just another reason to vote him out.

The blue wave coming is actually going to be dangerous (at least for me, as a moderate). But it’s necessary. The affects of Trump (e.g. judicial, rule of law, etc) might last 20 years. Disheartening stuff.

And I voted Trump…mainly because he pinpointed the FED as the cause of problems. It’s a shame he knows this, then completely bowed down to the FED once in, though it’s not surprising. I took a gamble…knew he was a disaster waiting to happen in every other regard, but figured if he could kibosh the FED it would be worth it.

I should also give Trump credit for pinpointing China as a problem. The true problem is the FED (95%), China (5%). China is just acting on incentives we put in place. These issues are actually somewhat linked, in that we had to go to China due to the FED inflating. But at least he recognized China as a problem. Good to see Biden recognizing China as a problem. Biden hasn’t commented on the FED, but my guess is he loves them. Going to be a brutal vote for me.

And I’m an environmentalist, and I like guns. So…

Except his solutions to the China problem. Especially abandoning the TPP Trade Deal just made life easier for China.

He did nothing about their concentration camps where put Muslims and other political enemies.
He has done nothing to protect Hong Kong.
Even the trade war was a gift to China.

          China loves Trump as President.

Just because he said the words ‘China is a problem’ doesn’t mean he actually cared to solve said problem. China gives his daughter patents, why would Trump do anything to hurt China?

          • Not sure what you’re ranting about, but I said that he ID’d China as a problem is good, because they are.

Suggest “100 Year Marathon” as the best book I’ve ever read on China.

            3

I don’t care if Presidents can “identify” a problem.

I care about what they actually do and China loves Trump as President.

One observation I would make, I seriously doubt Biden makes it through four years. I’m not a doctor, but I spent the better part of ten years caring for someone several hours a week who was eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Biden has some mannerisms that are familiar to me and would suggest something is going on other than just gaffes. If I vote for Biden, I will go into it with the understanding that there is a high likelihood that I’m voting for the VP.

Trump with another Friday night surprise. Pussy can’t do his bidding unless nobody knows about it. He is going down so hard this fall. Honestly think he doesn’t want any part of the job anymore.

At what point does someone in leadership just say what everyone knows……no football until an effective vaccine is in place. Even the NBA and MLB are struggling, are they just fighting for TV revenue? How are all these players contracting COVID? Out partying, socializing, and not following the basic safety guidelines?

    • And as you were writing that, it’s announced Larry Scott is Covid19 positive. Maybe was out partying and socializing with the players?

The temptation of ladies of the night. A tale as old as time in how all diseases are transferred.

Edit: Just kidding, more honorable ladies of AB.

  71. Angry – you pinpoint the FED as the root of most problems so I just have an intellectual inquiry (I have no clue what the answers are and you know the history).

What problems was the FED supposed to solve?

FED was created in 1913 and there was definitely systemic issues before that, what was the source of problems then?

    • Financial panics in the late 1800s. The FED were supposed to “solve” that…lolz

The idea was to stop the business cycle (boom/bust cycle), but of course they only made it worse, while transferring wealth upward via the way inflation works (i.e. those who touch printed money first get full purchasing power of it). This is why we have an ever increasing wealth gap since getting off the gold standard partially 1913-1933 and entirely in ’71. Look at graphs since ’71. All the FED (plus no gold standard, which enables the FED).

Just got my test results back in 1.5 days and it was negative which is what I expected but wanted to make sure. Darn thing about it is they won’t disclose who at work tested positive so it makes the tracking and tracing strategy somewhat difficult. I understand due to HIPPA laws, but under the circumstances I think it’s important to know who tested positive. That way, I would have know right from the get-go if I had close and direct contact with the individual. It seems counter intuitive to the tracking and tracing strategy IMO. Regardless, I’m good to go and even went out and played golf today (by myself) and was 2 over after 6 holes but then on #7 got stuck behind some yahoos that spent 10-15 minutes looking for their balls in the drink. It got me out of my rhythm and had an 8 on a par 4 followed by a double bogie on par-3 and finished with a par on #9 to score a 44 but probably should have shot a 40-42. Oh well, I’ll take a clean 44 I guess…..

Two down votes on my negative test for Covid…..cool, I’m guessing those two down votes must have been hoping the results were positive….very cool.

      • Probably the hippa laws? Hate golf? Nah most likely cause you are some kind of libtard.

Joking aside I’m glad you got the negative, are being safe in your exercise and feeling healthy. You are very good at golf.

        • Ya I’m guessing it was the golf. Who gives a shit about someone else’s golf score. That’s like telling everybody about my day running errands.

          • Agreed, I golf all the time and never get the “is there good?” question.

I always respond, “Are we betting?”

And as long as it’s a no, you decide what is ‘good’

Sadly, I am a stickler for the rules so I’m really mean to myself when scoring compared to what seems to be the ‘norm’ in my peer group.

          • Hard to say if it was a good nine or not. That’s why golf has handicaps. If you’re a scratch golfer then 44 on the front means you headed directly to the range to try to get rid of your shank. But if you’re a 16 then you probably wanted to play another 9 to keep the dream alive.

        • Golf is racist.

Played with a white ball and predominately by white males. Ever see any golf courses in black neighborhoods????

          Me neither. Racists.

I wanted to finish and play the back 9 but the doofers in front of me didn’t understand golf etiquette as they were totally oblivious to letting me play through (3 of them with 2 carts and 1 of me in a cart). The 44 was a clean 44 with no mulligans or provisional shots. I’m a decent golfer but mostly inconsistent so when I shoot a 44 it’s like the Beavers going 12-0 in the regular season for football….virtually impossible in my estimation. Plus, when you’re playing solo and you’ve got nobody to share those UnBeaverable shots from 170 out and plugging the green with your 5-wood on 3 separate occasions (yes, I know most most golfers prefer their irons at that distance but me…..I prefer my trusty 3, 5 and 7 woods off the track). I had to share my brief moment of success. Anyway, I finally had a decent 9-holes on the heels of the Covid test…..maybe I should get tested every week as it might improve my golf scores….

      • You could just shove a long swab up your nose instead. Maybe a little brain tickle is what did the trick :-)

Nice work on the 44. Bogey golf is always my goal.

I can’t remember if it was linked here, but there’s a story out there about a 37-year-old going on about the “hoax” on his social media accounts and he caught it and died. I’m sure there will be more. Pandemics have historically plagued mankind (no pun intended), this is new to us, but not unique. I guess there are just more bat shit crazy people now? The idiotic behavior is stunning, but I have to tell myself it’s a vocal minority. I hope.

The company I work for has taken a hard stand. No mask, no service, no exceptions. If you are so sick you can’t wear a mask, you should probably not be out in the public right now. Sue us!

  73. Sports shows a quiver of life this weekend as live baseball returns with the WWWL and BIG Jim pens an article on FB head coaches.
BIG compares the recent history of FB coaches at OSU and even includes a pic of Pettibone!
    He concludes:
Jonathan Smith inherited a “fractured locker room. It is in this area that Smith has shined through his first two years. He has increased the talent level, players are getting stronger and faster, the X’s and O’s seem to be in good hands – but what makes it all go is a group of players working hard for each other.”

thanks for finding and linking to this, OOBie. It is worthy of remark, relative to Andersen’s mishandling of the QB situation in years 2 and 3 (if not 1, 2, and 3), and the resultant division of the locker room, that our own Angry picked up on this divide, rather astutely I thought and well before anyone else in the formal media or social media, when he detected Ryan Nall referring to Luton as “this guy.”
