In-Game Comments: OSU @ UCLA

Happy gameday, Beavlettes.

I'll be watching this UCLA game closely for signs the Beavers can beat the Ducks. I noted all those things earlier in the week–sustained drives that result in TDs instead of FGs, conditioning on D, etc.

I'm really curious to see if Hawaii can do anything versus Boise State. I suppose as Beav fans we should want Boise State and TCU to win, but I just can't find myself routing for BSU.

Oh, and go Huskies.

Cheers,

Angry

  1. The Ducks are getting called for all the little crap they usually get away with.

Then I look at the field and see no Jay Stricherz.

I expect the refs to let up in the second half though.

      • It’s more than that–they’re not biting on any fakes thus far. Oregon has had to resort to the pass. They also have absolutely nothing to lose, so they’re playing loose. Their QB is garbage, though–he had a wide open TD on the first pass and under threw it it by 10 yards.

  2. In case anyone thought Boise State wasn’t a bunch of cheap shot shits, take a look at this video of a free kick. Watch the kicker run down the field. Then you’ll want to replay the video and watch the left side of the screen as both teams run downfield. It’s hard to see against the turf, but that’s #5, Jason Robinson who should be kicked off the team for this crap.

But no… Boise State fosters this cheap shot mentality. They are so pro-cheap shot that they are getting creative in ways to try and hurt people intentionally.

    • Thomas is having trouble reading the line stunts. The UW DE is running to the inside, and the MLB is taking the end. So he doesn’t know where to look for his reads. I’m sure they’ll make that adjustment during the half.

  3. The Ducks would get crushed by Auburn or Alabama in the BCS title game while making the Pac-10 look worse than it needs to…. for the love of God, please let the Ducks lose just ONE game in their pansy, weak-ass schedule…

    • I disagree their schedule is weak–what makes it a bit weaker is that they get Cal and Washington with broken QBs. I think this game would be a dogfight with Locker in there. Though, it’s still early and you can already see the Washington D wearing out and the Ducks offense coming alive, so maybe not.

Ps. Sagarin has the Ducks at 42nd SOS. Better than average.

      • IDK, playing a last place SEC team, a team that has never made the Top 25 in it’s programs history, and a I-AA school, added to a horrid PAC-10 year and only playing 2 teams with winning records…. i’d say that makes for a pretty weak ass schedule…. at least Auburn plays in an SEC that has higher quality teams this year.

  4. I told you the refs would let up on the Ducks little illegalities. Thomas’ TD run off the right side had an obvious hold by #74 (Thran?) at the point of attack. He had a handful of shoulder pad on the outside of the UW defender, keeping him from making the play at the point.

That call is made every time in the NFL regardless of whether or not the O-lineman has a handful of anything or not. The line judge and back judge see that arm on the outside of the defender, and laundry comes out every time without fail.

  5. As I say this, #74 (Weems) gets called on a phantom call. It wasn’t actually on him. If you watch the replay, you’ll see the center (#54, Holmes) club the DT’s head. #42 (Paulson) was also blocking five yards downfield well before the pass was thrown.

  6. Just a note on a score from a future Pac-12 team – Colorado just lost a game 45-52.

take note – CU was up 35-10 midway through the 3rd quarter. Up 38-17 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Absolute collapse. How do you give up 5 4th qtr TDs?

Looks like CU will be coming into the conference with a new coach.

    • I think we’re jinxing the Ducks with comments like this. Let me try….

Oregon’s defense will be awesome in the third and fourth quarter and allow their team to win handily.

  7. UO tell on pass plays:
Notice that their strong side line formation is always a yard behind the ball. On pass plays, especially on the last TD pass, they’re lined up a full two yards back. It’s actually an illegal formation.

  8. Thomas looking like a first year starter. As far as our week schedule (previous post) If our schedule is that week – like you say – then the Pac 10 must stink because we are 7 games into the Pac schedule.

And I see big weaknesses in the SEC this year. LSU could barely handle Tennsessee. Auburn takes overtime to beat an unranked team at home and only beat UAB by 3 at home? What makes that so unreal?

    • I concur. The SEC is weak this year. Two of their powers (Florida and Georgia) stink, and Florida might win the SEC east, which is a testament to how down the conference is. Auburn is a joke. I think a team like Oklahoma State would smoke them. Oregon would beat them by 35.

    • “…then the Pac 10 must stink because we are 7 games into the Pac schedule”

      Exactly… it does.

Arrogant Duck fans will have you believe that the Pac-10 is full of world-beater teams to make themselves look better than they really are because they have yet to lose… but that’s ok…. everyone is aware of the arrogance.

  9. So did anyone pay attention to what I said about all the little procedural rules the Ducks break?

For the record, the center sitting out of his stance is pretty unique… and illegal. I know UofDuck says it’s done by many teams, and it may be. But it should be called on all of them. I’ll have to watch the Beavs to see if they ever do it.

The LMJ run from the 23 to the 6 with :50 seconds left is a perfect example of one of the UO illegalities that they get away with because of the speed game. Maehl caught the screen to the outside, and he never came inside the numbers before the next play.

I don’t think coaches are watching and catching these things. Why do unpaid fans catch this while millionaires miss them?

  10. UCLA coaches spent time studying the Nevada’s pistol during the offseason. IF (you’ll note the big IF) UCLA can get a QB in there that can run the Beavs could be in for a long day.

    That’s if…………

    • I have to agree with that. Halahuni is a great talent…and I really think he is playing with a huge chip on his shoulder since Washington. If it is possible to catch with a purpose, that’s what he’s doing.

92 rushing yards from UCLA so far. 1/3 of it from their QB.

That isn’t a stat that will help.

  11. This game is making me more frustrated then the UW game. I thought crushing Cal was a good sign until I realize today that Cal=Wazzu. We still can’t stop white athletic QB’s, wait til we play Luck, that should be a fun night for him. Offensive crea…what?? Quizz is taking huge hit after huge hit. All in all, a safety here would be nice.

  12. I’ve decided I don’t give a shit any more today. Nevermind…that can’t happen. I can’t turn my Beaver love off.

Words can’t express how much I hate Banker and Langsdorf and Riley’s lazy recruiting practices.

  13. Love that play – we need to find a way to spread the attention of the defense out instead of having 11 guys trying to tee off on Jaq. every possession.

  14. well, we are in a fight to even be bowl eligible at this point. A loss here would take us to what 4-4.

    We will lose to USC
    We will lose to Stanford
    We will lose to UofO

Our only remaining victory will be WSU.

    5 and 7.

    • Disagree on Stanford.

      Beavs will win 7.

I was hoping for a Rose Bowl run, but I’ve seen enough. This slow white QB looks like Chris Johnson. Forgetaboutit.

    • Dear Oregon State,

I am the worst thing that ever happened to your offensive line. I have drawn so many penalties I should be an art major. I’m a piece of shit. I only played one game in my life, and that was USC a couple years ago.

Now I’m just proving that the walk-on offensive line program at OSU is ruining the team. Well, Langsdorf and Banker deserve some credit too.

    • speaking of Paea…a couple of huge plays in a row from our stud.

Unfortunately followed by a precision punt.

Anybody else get the feeling our oline is going to f something up here? false start? give up the safety?

  15. and the penalty. man, we should write books on how to lose games. that puts them into FG range.

Oh well. Instead of prepping for a mediocre bowl, we can reflect on how crappy our team is.

  16. Wow, I just realized that they have the ball in field goal range, we cant stop their running game, they have the best kicker in the nation even if he missed a kick in this game, and there is 3 minutes on the clock. We can’t lose this game.

  17. I’m almost hoping, at this point, that we lose out here. The only way this program is going to change is going through hell first, because what we’re doing isn’t working. You lose to UCLA, you might as well quit.

    • I was thinking the same thing–not sure I want them to win this game because the fan base will think everything is okay.

An o-line of walk-ons is not okay. Keith Pankey as a starter is not okay.

      • KP missed that sack early, but I really think he has stepped up his game. He made some nice plays at the line of scrimmage tonight.

        Our O-line is getting worse.

  18. The right team won tonight. We played terribly. We now don’t have to endure the “still in the rose bowl race” comments anymore.

    • Yeah…can you imagine that effort against Standford’s d-line? Or against Luck?

I can’t believe what I’m seeing this year.

      We excel at mediocrity.

  19. We don’t have to be worried about the Rose Bowl, but how about any bowl? If we beat WSU, we still have to get one game out of Stanford, USC and Oregon to be bowl eligible. It amazes me how much better our offense is with James Rodgers. How closely could tonight’s team play TCU? Oh well.

  20. Riley is damned lucky he’s had the Rogers brothers playing for him these past few years. imo OSU’s record would have been MUCH worse without them.

Riley might have lost his job by now if it wasn’t for them.

  21. Did anybody figure out what the personal foul was on Remmers at the beginning of the last drive? The announcers did not seem to pick up on the imporance of that penalty. Quizz hits a nice 8 yard run and it looks like the Beavs might have some momentum to do something and then apparently Remmers was pulling some walk-on crap after the play! Really, after I take a deep breath, they were luck to string it out as long as they did Forbath is not going to miss two field goals very often. I guess the only sadistic pleasure will be to read how some orange colored glasses websites spin this after all of their the defense is back bs last week.

    • Yeah, it happened right by the play at the sideline. A defender was just standing there after the whistle and he came in with the two-hand shove and knocked him about 3′ sideways. Right in front of the officials.

How about channeling that effort into blocking for Jaq.?

      • I hope Cavanaugh and Riley sit his ass on the bench. I mean could the offense line be any worse? They cannot run block for a once in lifetime running back and apparently pass blocking against a bad team is not doable anymore either.

        • agreed. Who know what that drive would have done. 2nd and 3, get another first down…may not have won, but the game would have been different.

I don’t think the Roberson play deserved a penalty that gave them a first down and eventual TD though. He tried to avoid contact. That was a game changer too.

          • Yeah, I cannot work up much anger at Roberson, very ticky-tacky, but Remmers penalty was a possible game coster (granted it was a game they did not deserve to win).

  22. It’s been said before, but fuck this team.

Fuck our inability to stop the most one-dimensional offensive attack ever.

Fuck Mike Riley and the shit-eating grin/chuckle he shared with his fellow coach as his team is about to lose the worst fucking game they’ve played all year.

  23. Fuck. Shit. Piss. And multiple Fucks after that.

Fucking Banker needs to fucking go because his defenses fucking suck and he’s not recruiting the fucking athletes to make up for his fucking shitty defensive schemes.

    Fuck Pankey.

Fucking let opposing offenses run the fuck all over us… Do it! Who cares?! Fucking Banker doesn’t!

    Fuck Pankey.

    • I can only blame Pankey and Hardin so much. It’s the coaches that play these guys. I find it hard to believe there is nobody better on the team then these guys. I would rather see some RS freshman out there flailing around gaining experience. It only gets worse, Hardin in only a junior. He already has the starting corner job for next year. Can we get David Ross back?

  24. Like Angry has been trying to tell us all along our coaching staff may be nice guys but they cannot get us to a level higher than maybe a Sun bowl. This game was lost by our coaching staff. So many bad calls I can’t even list them all. Thats two games our staff has lost this year the other was Wash.

  25. Looking to next year on defense, how dow you think it will look? Here’s what I think they’ll look like:

    Glover-Thompson-Tuivailala-Crichton

    Akuna-Wilson-Doctor

    Poyer-Mitchell-Reynolds-A. Watkins

That defense would cover a lot of ground. I doubt Banker would do this though.

  26. This season is shaping up so much like 2005 when they lost to a bad Arizona and mediocore Stanford team and the only hope for bowl eligibility was beating an excellent Duck team. We know how that worked out! 5-6 going into the Civil War is a very real possiblity.

  27. I had a friend tell me 5 years ago he wouldn’t come back until Riley was gone. It took me this long to agree. It might not be all him, but defense & play calling are terrible

  28. Wazzu should put in the pistol or spread option this week in practice and they might win. These mysterious newfangled offenses are apparently too much for Banker and his staff to figure out. Please tell me Nevada is not on the schedule anytime soon.

    • True story. I said after the first drive that it’s amazing we’re this far into the season, and this far into Banker and Riley’s coaching careers, and they STILL can’t stop the pistol or spread. It’s embarrassing, and it’s killing us.

  29. Dockery didn’t have a good game at all tonight, he got beat like he stole something really big tonight. It was horrifying to watch. I was like, “Is this really happening”

I hope the pac-12 schedule next year will benefit us rather than kill us. I just hope that our defense steps up and yes, that we find an O-line that isn’t full of current or former walk-on’s. Not another year of walk-on’s please….I can barely handle this years O-line as it is! The only true scholly player is Philipp and he’s more talented than the walk-on’s, but he’s not as sharp as he was when he first started last year. :( Let’s get Bowl eligible!!!

  30. Another thing while I am venting….why were they giving up the sideline of that last play? That was their only real option and they played it perfectly. I guess Banker was protecting against the Hail Hary, but they did not even have receivers lined up in that formation. Another example of being outcoached. Evil Ricky had a plan to get 10 yards and give Kai something 55 yards and in and they executed with a second string QB???? I give up.

  31. This team has taken giant steps backwards. Such a disappointment that this team continues to lose to inferior competition. There is no excuse whatsoever for the Beavers to lose to UCLA and UW.

It really is time to think about making a change at head coach. Riley is proving he can never take the team above being a solid team. Being solid would be just fine if the Beavers over the last few years wasn’t a bowl team but they have been. When you win 8 or 9 games each season you would expect the team to make that next step. Unfortunately, under Riley that will never happen.

De Carolis needs to stop being so content with the team being solid and should expect more from Riley which I don’t think will ever happen which is so frustrating.

  32. The only thing I see wrong with this coaching staff is this: Inconsistent game prep, piss poor recruiting, and not being able to find guys who play with passion.

If 2 of these 3 things, i.e. game prep and recruiting were consistent and solid, then we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Riley’s offensive system is HIS system not Langsdorf’s. Langsdorf is a problem because he can’t really figure out what works and doesn’t work and they “probed” the FUCLA defense waaaay too much considering how long our TOP(time of possession) was for this game.

sorry, i took my frustration out on my keyboard for a second.

  33. By golly WSU is alot better this year than they have been. It will take a great effort by our team to get past them. Lets give them 10 hip hip hooray’s for how much they’ve improved this year. Let’s schedule Linfield for our TBD game next year for old time sake. Might get a W. If not, ol well. We can still be proud of our kids.

  34. JackBeav, that comment you were trying to post the other day–I just found it in my spam. If that ever happens let me know, and I’ll check the spam folder.
