17.Nov.2010 Basketball Comments: Beavs @ Seattle

Just want to give you guys a heads up that tonight's game will be on television. Fox sports NW. In California the game is on FCSP. Tip off is at 7pm. Local Seattle Beavs, get out there and support the team. For the rest of us, we can complain…er, I mean, make astute observations from the comfort of our armchairs.

I'm psyched to see the boys on the big screen–watching that internet stream of the last game was brutal. I don't know much about Seattle. I'm sure Warren or JackBeav has a magazine that says they stink. Don't know…I think of them as Gonzaga light edition. Probably because of the way they man-handled the Beavs last year. I'll be looking for the Beavs to play more relaxed and start the game the way they finished the last one.

Gotta get these easy, early season wins if you want to be in the post season, so this is a big game in my book. Go Beavs.

I don’t care what the Beavers wear as long as it isn’t yellow or green and they kick fucking ass in it.

I think Seattle U was just a test of the character of the older players and for the most part, they failed. It was the dying gasp of Jay John led horseshit. Now, we get to see these guys start redeeming orange and black.

16-16 Beavs. We need to practice tip-ins and put backs. We have left some points on the court…but good ball movement so far.

Wallace is playing pretty well right. Good aggressive moves to the hoop.

What I’m really liking are the open looks we’re getting.

I don’t know anything about basketball strategy. Can someone explain how Seattle gets into the lane so easily, yet the Beavers can’t penetrate past the 3 point line? And when they do, it looks much much more difficult.

Because Seattle is allowed to hand-check. It’s totally illegal, and it’s totally altering the game. Our guys are actually spinning in place when they begin a dribble drive, and it should be called every time.

  • VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

Angry, Seattle is setting a lot of screens where the Beavers are trying to trap around half court so their PG can get into the lane and the defense is scrambling so there is some open spots defensively when the 1-3-1 is ran. I think Craig might go to just more of a 2-3 zone to prevent that

Cunningham’s inability to make the simple layup makes me wonder where the fundamentals go for some of these players.

I think Robinson needs to take some of that discipline and crank it up when it comes to the simple plays in the game.

He also needs to run them like crazy…you know, to simulate chasing them after missing a 2-footer.

Sure they’ve made some poor shots, but you gotta like how OSU is playing with poise this game.

I think they are playing strong while Seattle is playing speed. It’s an interesting battle right now.

Except he’s having trouble holding onto rebounds on the defensive end. His inability to hold onto them has led to a at least 2 buckets

Beavos seem really out of position for rebounds in general. They’re all biting on the shot. How about just one guy covers the shot and the rest rebound? They have a size advantage, but since they’re all on the perimeter covering the shot it’s nullified.

  • VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

Yeah, I think Coach Rob should play man to man defense a little more it will help a lot more with rebounding and I think the Beavers could do a decent job on the perimeter defending.

Seattle turned the ball over something like 30 times and the Beavers still lost. They stopped playing at the 9 minute mark with the 11 point lead, then scrambled at the end to try to win. They need to learn games are won and lost at that juncture of the game. Also, so many missed layups. That has continued since last year.

I’ll say it again: I’ll take a team of slow, smart white guys who play sound fundamentals over off the chart athleticism.

The problem was during a stretch it looked like Craig was calling or maybe Calvin was calling isolation plays for Calvin and the offense stalled cause he would hold it and then dribble and dribble ruined the flow of the offense.

Seattle fucking U???? Two years in a row??? Are you fucking kidding me???? That was a team that had been blown out in all of their games so far. They had 30 fucking turnovers. We should have blown them out. Inexcusable. Why in the hell did we take our foot off the gas when we had them down 12??? The only thing they proved tonight is they still have a LONG ways to go. And work on rebounding and free throw shooting for piss sakes. Jesus how many second and third chances did SU get?

      Post of the day…lmao.

      Here’s a few observations…

      1) Too much turning and watching the shot instead of aggressively blocking out and pursuing the rebound.

      2) The success of the 1-3-1 half court trap relies on a tireless, fast point man that can cover the perimeter sideline to sideline. If the ball gets to the elbow or corner, the rotation on the backside has to immediate. Fail on both accounts.

      3) Chip shots need to go in the hole.

      4) What happened to the officiating? The game was pretty aggressive/loosely called until the last 7 minute or so, then every touch was a foul. SU shot about a dozen freethrows down the stretch.

      5) I like Daniel Deane, but he is not a Pac-10 caliber basketball player. Banker should have been recruiting him the last couple of years.

    • VA:F [1.9.22_1171]
      Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)

Yeah, it was a bad loss. In the last 10 minutes anything that could go wrong went wrong. 3 things cost the Beavers the game. 1. Calvin had an open court layup but tried to be too fancy and give it back to Jared in traffic it would’ve pushed lead to 14 .
      2. Calvin fouling a 3 point shooter leading to a four point play just a foolish mistake the team was rattled.
      3. Craig not calling a T.O. at all during Seattle’s 24-5 run to take 76-69 lead. That was a big mistake by Craig you could tell team was rattled and just needed to be calmed down. That is Craig’s main fault as a coach he is not a real good game manager.

Well, they were much improved if you use last year’s Seattle game as a point of comparison. Lost by what, 50, at home? Lost by 3 on the road. Different players and such but if you adjust your perspective/scale to the university level then it’s an improvement. I’m sure people will spin it that way.

The problem for me was the missed layups from point blank range and missed free throws–two fundamental issues that left about 25 points on the floor combined. Both were problems last year, and both are problems so far this year.

  • VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

Calvin Haynes plays undisciplined, playground-style basketball. He will score points when he’s hot, but he takes bad shots and makes bad decisions.

Daniel Deane is like an old rhino out there — he will get some rebounds and bring toughness, but his lack of skills will be exposed quickly and always ends up hurting the team.

The Beavs are obviously a team in transition. The new, young players are more athletic, more skilled, and more disciplined than the players like Haynes and Deane from the old regime.

If I were Coach Robinson, I’d relegate Haynes and Deane to the bench, and go with the younger guys.

At guard, give most of the time to Starks, Cunningham, and Roberto Nelson (as soon as he’s available).

At forward, give most of the time to Burton, Brandt, Moreland, and Collier (but also give time to Omari Johnson as needed). And work on developing the big young guys such as Chris Brown and Daniel Jones.

The Beavs will lose some games this year by doing this. But, heck, the Beavs just lost a game last night where Calvin Haynes failed even to get off a shot at the end. I’d rather have seen the ball in the hands of Ahmad Starks in that situation. Couldn’t have done any worse than Haynes, and probably would have done better….

Deane should be told he can only rebound. Nothing else. He’s tenacious in that regard. He can’t do anything else on the court, though.

McShane should never see the court unless they’re up or down by 40.

    Here are my thoughts:
    1. Cunningham seems to have come under control and looks to be a great player.
    2. Deane should be used in short burst to provide energy, but not log minutes.
    3. Burton is trying to force the passes and just looks slow. His minutes need to be based on matchups.
    4. Omari looked great, but he does not have the motor that Seth had on top of the 1-3-1. I hope we have someone that does or we should not use that very much this year.
    5. Where were all of the young kids in the second half? It is pre-Pac 10 and those guys need to be seeing some minutes. Moreland and Collier hardly played. That needs to change.
    6. Much more exciting brand of basketball, this team will be fun to watch. Hopefully they can limit their stupid mistakes and make a higher % of free throws and put-backs (those are what lost this game).

So… that was a fun game.

I’m probably not going to get over how bad those refs were for a while. Our guards should seek counseling now since they were brutally molested for the whole game. What happened to my game of 20 years ago when you couldn’t touch the guy with the ball or it was a foul? Now apparently you can check him and push him and move him with your hands… as long as you don’t body him 20 feet out. Never mind. Even THAT wasn’t called. Starks was being held more than a Mike Remmers blocking assignment.

    ?

Still, a great team overcomes this and wins. It looked like we were going to fight through it until the refs found a second wind to help them sail for homerville.

And Coach Rob didn’t help matters by playing the mad scientist with the rotation. When we were up and Seattle was sucking eggs on their end, we should have put the big bodies in and dared them to shoot over us. They weren’t hitting those shots, and they weren’t going to hit them (even with the refs helping them along) for the next several minutes.

While they were allowed to manhandle our guards on the perimeter, we were called for breathing near them at a pace of: you stole the ball… that’s illegal!

Once we were taken off the court defensively, there was no hope that our seniors would balance the game with any spirited offensive output. So why were they still in the game? Calvin had a couple genuine bone-headed plays, but they weren’t too bad in the context of the game. You never lose momentum at the apex of a lead as large as 12 points by making some dumb play while having fun. But you can lose it by making a succession of poor plays. And you can really lose it when the other team is given foul shots whenever they turn it over or miss a shot.

A look at the replay is an indictment of the refs. And a reading of the play by play only confirms it. In fact, it’s uglier. There was a stretch of 10 minutes where Seattle suddenly forgot how to turn the ball over according to the p-b-p.

Over the last ten minutes, several things were obvious. Seattle could do no wrong despite obvious mistakes and over-aggressive play. Our steals were suddenly fouls. Their missed shots were suddenly fouls. Their holding and checking and pushing were good play… especially when it turned into some mysterious turnover by our side.

I’m not saying we were playing well… far from it. I’m saying we were playing as poorly as the opposition, but they benefitted from some mysterious duplicity practiced by the refs.

Good play wins us this game. A better rotation (less seniors in crunch time) maybe wins us this game. Hell, where was Omari for the last ten minutes? He got one defensive rebound during their run, and that’s it. Lathen just should not have been in the game. If he did as much as Omari and no more I would have been extremely happy with his output. But he was killing us. He just couldn’t adapt to getting felt up.

The call in the end should never have been necessary. But, once it was, it should have been Starks on the handle with Omari and Lathen in the corners and Brandt and Haynes finding spots FT extended. Any one of the five have the ability to hit it when they get it, and a ball fake would have put Seattle in the air.
