Who's up early watching Gameday? I was about 50 minutes late to the party, but what I see so far is a lot of Duck fans in attendance for this game. The campus looks awesome behind the set. Can anyone fill me in on the first 50 minutes? Any compliments for the good guys?

I'm curious if you're all going to watch the game today. I've heard a lot of Beaver fans say they won't watch due to the Beavs having no shot and the Gameday coup/duck love. Eh, that's a crappy mentality. If the Beavers win they're going to the Alamo or Holiday Bowl.  Wouldn't it be ironic if they went to their best bowl game in one of their worst recent years?

And just think, if the Beavers go down in defeat, the basketball team plays later today so we get to see an easy victo–. ;)

Load up on the gin and any other feel-good materials you may need.

  1. I have been watching off and on. I find Erin Andrews annoying (I think it is her voice). She pinned down Herbstreit for his pick and he acted like she broke protocol by asking him so early in the show (of course, he went with the Ducks).

Corso been very complimentary of Riley and the team. I turned on my TV at 6am and the first thing I saw was a huge “Go Big Red” banner and thought where the hell are they? Beaver can’t get any respect?

      • Just that anything can happen in rivalry games and mentioned how well the Beavers played at home against USC. They make some good points about Katz at home versus the road. I did not hear about the campus, but some stuff about the beautiful Pacific NW. One of the lead in idiots on ESPNU on the early show was saying something about rain which is not in the forecast anywhere that I have seen.

  2. Interesting…in regard to Darren Thomas, Desmond Howard just said, “he relies on instantaneous decisions. You have to trick him.” Where is gladbeav??

    • You can see why he’d think that.

I had a dream last night that the Beavers were in a 7-3 game at halftime. They call it a dream for a reason!

      • He is the guy who had been saying that the Ducks would hang 100 on the Beavs. He loves to ruffle feathers, but a score like that is not out of the realm of possibility. On the other side, I watched the whole Oregon/Cal game, so 7-3 at halftime is not complete fiction either. Probably somewhere in the middle, most of the sports guys in the state have it 45-24, 52-21 type of prediction.

        • 100 is absolutely stupid. 75 isn’t beyond possibility, but it’s highly unlikely. The Ducks would need at least three D/ST TD’s to hang 75.

I think mid-50’s is a safe bet if you’re going with the blow-out… possibly a replay of 2008. I think it’ll be a replay of last year with them tacking on an extra two TD’s.

We’ll be down 30-28 at the end of the third, and Kahut will miss an easy FG. Then they’ll run off 21 points to end the game.

          • Yep, I fear the 3rd quarter. Maybe the Beavs can hang around for a half, but it takes a lot of desire and fortitude to come out in the 3rd quarter and maintain intensity and focus. I just don’t see that happening.

  3. One stat mentioned earlier that would show the magnitude if the Beavs could do the impossible. #1 ranked teams are 95-3-1 against teams with losing records in the last 40 years or something in November and December.

    • Is this the first week where you feel like the team is prepared? Based on what I read in the papers, they’ve gotten creative, put in some wrinkles on D, been practicing with fierce emotion, etc. I still think they lose by infinity, but I also feel like they’ve finally prepared correctly for a game. Does that kind of thing overcome talent deficient line play? We’ll know in a few hours.

      • Talent, effort, execution.

The Ducks have significantly more talent than the Beavs this year. No argument there.

But I think the Beavs can, perhaps, outdo the Ducks today on effort and execution. The crowd at Reser will be a big part of that. If the crowd is super-loud, I think the Beavs have a decent chance today, especially if we can get ahead early.

Sure, I know the Ducks are a second-half team, and that the Ducks wear teams down in the fourth quarter. But a super-energized crowd will help recharge tired Beavers. Meanwhile, serious noise will make it harder for the Ducks (just like any other college team) to run their offense. And I’m not so sure that sophomore QB Darren Thomas will come through if the Ducks are down in Q4 and Reser is rocking, with the NC at stake.

        Go Beavers!!

  4. For the most part, OSU at home has been unpredictable (mostly good). Big wins against Cal and SC. Bad loss to WSU. No one gives them a shot today, but something in me thinks this might be closer than expected. I just wish we already had 6+ wins and that the season wasn’t hanging in the balance. Oh well, let’s see how the unis look :)

    • “I just wish we already had 6+ wins and that the season wasn’t hanging in the balance. ”

Today is the Beaver’s bowl game. C’mon, it doesn’t get better than playing the top team in the country on national TV, with GameDay in town, in the last week of the season. At Reser!

How could any bowl game measure up to knocking the #1 Ducks out of the NC game? If the Beavs win today, it will be nice to go to a bowl, but it will still be an anticlimax. Meanwhile, if the Beavs don’t win today, it will be good for this disappointing season to end.

In other words, this is it. Today is the day.

      Go Beavers!!

      • TCU and BSU were also bowl games (in atmosphere, etc). Probably better. It’s why I liked those games when they were scheduled. Sucks to lose them, but so be it.

  5. Guys, keep the recruiting discussion in the thread below for that topic. It gets cluttered otherwise for people who want to discuss today’s game.

Cliff told me that Pankey is in fact starting today. No need to type what I’m thinking; you guys know by now.

    • Don’t know if you caught it, but in Cliff’s blog he mentioned all of the Beavers on Phil Steele’s all Pac-10 team, and there he was, fourth team, Keith Pankey. Had to laugh at that one.

  6. Ahhhh…the Pankster…….that would be the one question I would love to ask Banker when he is not longer w/ the Beavs. What the hell were you thinking? Banker had the perfect out with the achilles injury to quit starting him without hurting feelings. I feel my brain pushing out of the side of my head just thinking about this. Breath deeply…must breath deeply.

  7. I may be the only one here who believes they will win the game. I think the Beavers win this won today 34-31 and think they will force some Oregon turnovers and do just enough defensively to hold on late. How funny would it be if Justin Kahut kicked the game winning FG with how much shit he has gotten from Beaver fans(deservedly so)and so many would love the guy.

    • How do you think the Beavers are going to stop that offense? That’s the main problem/biggest mismatch. That Pankey is playing just made it even worse.

  8. Well I’ll say this Oregon’s offense on the road just isn’t the same on the road not nearly as good for some reason. I think they will send a lot of pressure and try to confuse Thomas on the read play. I think they have to have 1 guy designated to Thomas so he is forced to give it to LaMichael on the read option and try to shut LaMichael down. If the Beavers are smart they will take away the short quick routes and play press coverage and take away the WR screens. The short quick routes and WR screens are a huge part of their pass game if you take them away Darron Thomas could struggle a bit. I would say the most important they should do is just get pressure on Thomas and try force him into mistakes.

    • And you see this happening for an entire game? 4 quarters?

If you’re talking about the first quarter, I can agree with you, it might be close.

  9. Can a leopard change their spots? Can Banker change his defensive game plan? Perhaps I should have said can banker change his offensive – defensive game plan?

  10. I’m saying it will be effective on drives and other drives it won’t be. I still think Oregon makes some big plays and scores at least 30 points. But it will be important for Oregon State to have a long drives so the Beavers defense isn’t completely exhausted in the 4th quarter. So if they can be somewhat fresh in the 2nd half I think the defense can do just enough for the Beavers to pull out the victory. If the offense doesn’t have a lot of long drives the defense will wear down in the 2nd half and Oregon could put a lot of points on the board.

So it’s up to the offense to have long sustained drives so th

  11. I’m going to be sweating bullets if the Beavs march down the field and score on their first possession. Seems like all to often when that happens the team then goes to sleep.

  12. The Ducks are thinking it will just take one quick score to quite the crowd all afternoon, and they are right. Fans need to keep at it even if they’re down–that’s a big problem with OSU fans.

    • Agreed, awesome call on the TD. The two plays before that were weak, but forgiven since we got seven.

Beavs couldn’t ask for much better a start other than capitalizing on the first turnover.

    • We’re running Quizz on the outside more often, and seeing more screens. I like it.

Is it just me, or is our defense playing for the strip more than the tackle? It looks that way to me but the feed I’m watching isn’t that great.

  13. It looks like Quizz has some room against these guys, which is a great sign. Katz needs to settle down. Every time he gets hit he gets happy feet the rest of the game. Hopefully that TD settles him.

  14. Good first quarter. Beavs need to keep the intensity on. One mental lapse and they’re down and possibly out. They need to play with that mindset. Right now OSU has the mental edge; Ducks look nervous and rattled…have to keep punching them. 3rd down conversions will help.

  15. 10-4, 9-4, 9-4, 8-5……..5-7. Don’t like the trend, people….after those 3 pretty good years, the recruiting just simply wasn’t good enough, as evidenced by what we are seeing on the field.

  16. Would you guys rather see Oregon play Auburn or TCU?

Auburn has a better chance at beating them, but if they play/beat TCU we can make fun of their lone national title forever.

  17. I’m trying to think of something nice to say about Langsdorf’s play calling………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

    Still thinking.

  18. I really like it when that fucking parker starts chuckling when he’s describing a big play by the opposition.

    NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Katz has been terrible. I thought he would play better today. Langsdorf doing his usual abysmal play calling. That fake FG call I have no words for how bad that was. They’re fortunate to be within 9 points considering all the mistakes.

    • Katz is mentally weak. If he gets hit early he’s done for that day–it’s been the pattern all year.

I’m not sure why they haven’t run Wheaton on the fly. The linebackers seem to be selling out on Quizz, so it should be open.

    • We will have a chance if the defense can force a punt on the first drive. That’s an absolute must stop. Another thing that has to change is the play of Ryan Katz. He needs to play better, no more dumb mistakes. One more thing, Lansdorf needs to give Quizz the ball on 2 and 5 and closer. No more of that shotgun on 2nd and 3 that’s just ridiculous.

    • Nope. The Ducks are going to put up at least 14, probably more like 21, so the Beavers would have to put up 31 points to win. Do you see that happening? A chance was presented to them early in the game, and they gave it away.

      • Yeah, the likelihood of coming back isn’t great cause nothing really is going in their favor. Katz would have to play great football which isn’t likely cause we haven’t seen that in 2 months. It’s hard to watch that guy play. I just hate the idea of Oregon playing for a national title. No way would I watch their bowl game.

  20. Did you see how slow Gabe Miller, Unga, Frahm and company looked in the first half? The terrible blocking of the offensive line? The unimaginative play calling by Langsdorf? Can you believe how different the athleticism of these two teams appears? The only hope we have is to play mistake free, and force several Duck turnovers, and even then I’m not sure….

  21. That was the Beavers last chance to get back into that game. The defense got them the ball back with the score still 16-7 but the offense did nothing with it. They have their chances all afternoon long but have done basically nothing.

  22. Angry, the reason it looked like a lot of ducks on Gameday is because they had a special section for them. We still molested several duck signs in the back though. Gotta love tequila shots at 5am!

    • The FG is a big help now. 2tds and a couple stands win the game. Need a TD here. Hopefully they realize this is 4 down territory. I’d bet another $50 the play after commercial is a handoff to Quizz, and we’ll be in another 3rd down/obvious passing situation.

  23. I couldn’t believe the pass on second and goal from the five. Run to the outside or something there, especially with Quizz getting four up the middle on first. Langsdorf is trying to be too clever by half, I think. You don’t need to trick the other team, you need to run effective plays for the D&D.

  24. Just as the lady beav and I say the refs are calling a fairly clean game they call PI on a ball that’s overthrown and where Doctor looks back for it. That is a clear no call in a game of this magnitude.

  25. Well, the defense came out ready to play but Langsdorf still thinks he’s cunning as a fox who’s just been appointed professor of cunning at Oxford University, and Katz needs to develop his touch and football IQ in the offseason.

      • I think it could really go either way. In the first half of the season he was a lot tougher. And Katz’s first season has been better than Canfield’s, Moevao’s, Moore’s, and Anderson’s were. I guess I think there’s good upside to Katz but it’s up to him to claim it or not. I’m not really high on him after the last six weeks, but I’m not down on him either.

        • Well I can see what you’re saying but I’m really down on Katz because unlike those other guys you mentioned he regressed this season and decision seem to be getting worse.

But really what options do they have at QB Katz, Vaz and Mannion is basically it. So you would basically start over at QB with a inexperienced guy if they replaced Katz. You would definitely have growing pains and in the Rodgers brothers final season nobody wants to see this team win 6,7 , 8 games due to inexperienced QB play. It’s a tough decision for Riley.

  26. KATZ needs to LEARN the THROW AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! We don’t make enough 1st downs because he is always taking 7-12 yard sacks that kill us. He had no one about to tackle him and was running towards the sideline and could have lame-armed it out of bounds with any kin od throway to save us 5 yards and he refuses to do it. I BLAME RILEY for poor coaching, because this has been a MAJOR problem ALL YEAR!! They don’t throw flags for hucking it out-of-bound so if the odds are greater than 50% you may get sacked you have to just get rid of it almost every time. Katz doesn’t understand how many 3rd and 15s or worse we have had because of his and Riley’s ineptitude to understand this Football 101 basic I could teach a 3rd grader and I have seen plenty of Pop Warner kids understand so much better.

  27. Can we get rid of Langsdorf and Banker now please?!!

Yay!!! Wheaton Touchdown…Where was that thew two times we had first downs inside the 5 yard line and cam away with only field goals?

    • I like him but nobody knows how he will do in a live game for Oregon State. I ultimately think that Riley won’t consider a QB change and Langsorf and Banker will be back as well. Does Mike Riley ever consider a staff change?

  28. I hope the performance of the D doesn’t save Banker’s job. That is if Riley was EVEN considering replacing him, which I doubt he was.

But my hat’s off to the players, especially the D.

Thanks to the seniors and I hope life treats you well.

  29. We did a lot better than I thought we would. If you told me this defense would of only allowed 37 against Oregon, I would of laughed in your face. If those two passes didn’t get deflected for INT’s, I think we might of had a better shot. Also, if we had Canfield I think we would of won.

      • I know, but this year’s Oregon offense is MUCH more superior to last year’s offense; just look at the stats. If it wasn’t for 3 INT’s, they probably wouldn’t even of hit 30. The D played outstanding today, just wish they could of played like this the whole year.

        • Agreed, not sure how you could expect anymore out of the defense. A few big plays sure, but for the most part they contained the Ducks and had some key stops.
If the offense could have put together anything at all, it’s a different game. Also felt that Riley was almost content not to get blown out as opposed to winning by going for the FG’s.

          • Agreed. I think it may also hurt Ryan’s ability to be a leader when the head coach who is suppose to be the leader of the whole team is coaching scared and showing no leadership it’s really frustrating and it never changes.

    • Defense played really tough up the middle, but that is where Paea is, so I have expected that all year. Still they gave up over 300 yards rushing and the linebackers were embarassing slow at times.

  30. We should play in the Giant Killer unis next year. Just design a sail (white-ish) top and I think it is a better look. All the fans I know want change and then DeCarolis and Riley seem afraid of it. It is a good look and I think better defines our Oregon State brand.
