03.Feb.2012 Describe Oregon State with One Word

I thought this would be a fun game on a quiet day.

If someone asked you to describe Oregon State with one word, what would it be?

My word would be: "Slow"

I can give countless examples:

  • Reaction to Heyward leaving
  • Hiring new coaches
  • Firing ineffective coaches
  • Smaller things, like Riley slow to call timeouts, never running a no huddle, etc
  • Slow players, such as Keith Pankey
  • Slow to adapt to modern recruiting
  • Slow to embrace a new image
  • Etc. It goes on and on…I can think of a dozen more examples.

Oregon State is just…slow. They should probably consider changing their mascot from a beaver to a sloth. Just saying. Interesting how "fast" is the first word that comes to mind when I think of the Ducks.

On a positive and unrelated note, OSU did get some well-deserved recognition today, bringing in the #5 class at both offensive line and tight end. I agree with Rivals assessment. http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1327327

Back to the topic at hand: I'm giving you one word to describe OSU. What would it be?

    Off topic. RE Heyward leaving:

Seems like all too often the way things like this work out is OSU will end up having to pay someone more than Heyward is now making at UW and that new person is no better than Heyward. They would have been ahead if they’d just matched UW’s offer.

I won’t be surprised if that’s what happens this time.

And besides that they might not have been hit so hard by the recruits that were lost.

hereafter a rant… One of the things that bug me most is how traditional and old fashioned our geriatric we have become. Yet we have no gameday traditions. I hate our mascot. God I loved our classic benny beavs. I remember this foot tall ceramic statue my grandfather used to have of classic benny with a shirt log raised over his head with both arms as he was about to smash some lousy duck. I remember as a small kid how classic benny used to wink at me. I remember how benny and berneice would work the empty bleachers in the mid eighties. Befriending little kids like my sister and I and cementing us as life long fans.

OT: Just checked through the roster and including Tago, we have 8 DT’s (would be 9 if Fred was with us) and this doesn’t count for any O-lineman who may or may not be switched over.

So there is depth, but who knows how talented. Either way, we’ll see what becomes of it.

Look at the heights/weight/speed on all that depth, its dominated by guys to slow to be defensive ends, to light to be legitimate DT’s…think of a bunch of Kevin Frahms.

Josh Mitchell will almost certainly be moved to DT, I think the older Seumalo will be better this year, and he’s a good complimentary player, Castro will be a big body that takes up space and little else, and maybe Vieru gets in there. Everyone else seems small and slow. Don’t expect improved results from the DT group. Even WITH Thompson, this line needed 2 DT’s in this recruiting class.

      Bennett, Brandon 6-1 271 FR
      Braun, John 6-5 276 SO
Lopez, Joe 6-0 275 RS FR
      Masaniai, Castro 6-3 334 JR
      Robins, Ali’i 6-1 250 FR
      Seumalo, Andrew 6-3 281 JR
      Tuivailala, Mana 6-3 287

Keep in mind Braun was a backup (waaayyy back) offensive lineman who was moved to D-line because he was “just standing around.” Coach’s quote, not mine. These guys MIGHT start at PSU….no offense, most of them simply aren’t PAC-12 caliber. Expect them to beat the USC’s offensive line? Stanford’s? Sac State?

Dave Vieru is listed at 315, and was a former wrestler, and many are thinking he might make a good DT prospect. Same for Welch (300+ lbs).

Hell, I say with this year’s recruiting class, move new recruit Hasiak to DT too – the guy is big, has good feet (he’s an OT), and apparently aggressive and has behavioral issues – tell him to leave it on the field. In the backfield…

But Dalis Bruce went to E. Wa….Noland doesn’t seem quick/athletic enough, Robinson I thought was picked up to convert to LB?

Looks like OSU will be weak at DT and CB for the next few years…that’s a good combination.

I’ve never understood how OSU can play a style of D predicated on man to man coverage and always seem to be behind the eight ball roster wise at that position? Well, with our superior coaching, i guess we shouldn’t be concerned. Johnny, the 5’4″ walk-on from Philomath with the blazing 5.6 forty time should do just fine against the four and five star blazers the rest of the Pac-12 sighs at receiver. Talk about a NEAT story.
