First off, chat is back up so if you want to discuss Oregon/USC go here: http://angrybeavs.com/chat

Doing that keeps the game thread comments down.

I thought "swamp ass beav" had a good observation that the Beavs don't play well at night. I agree, they've seemed flat in the night games. I wonder if that is just this year or historical. Personally, I hate sitting around all day waiting to watch the game. Maybe the players get drained sitting around all day waiting to play one.

So, sitting around all day, forecast of rain, another QB change…not sure what to expect. I think the players all knew Vaz was the better QB in practice last week; wondering how much that factored into their effort. They might get an emotional boost from having their guy in there this week (not that they dislike Mannion, I just think players know when a guy isn't ready and shouldn't be on the field).

    WHat’s gotten into Utah – 39 points?

If ND ends up losing, this would be a great time for a dominant, both-sides-of-the-ball victory by OSU to enjoy some movement back up the polls…

Went to game last nite. Got told to sit down told them no. Got called an idiot at least 50 times and also finally was kicked in the back. All this because I was standing. Security guard told me that I might get thrown out of game. Great day to b a beaver? Yes this was on old side of field

I think the beavs will play well because nobody outside of corvallis gives a shit anymore. And as history tells us, the beavs are always at their best when nobody cares.

I see that Stricherz is officiating at the USC-UO game. Glad he’s not at Reser.

Beavs will need to keep the turnovers low to zero to make up for not having Poyer and the stops/interceptions he brings.

    21-17 Beavers.

Martin playing for Poyer will be minimized a bit because ASU doesn’t throw deep very much, and I think he’s a decent tackler, though not in Poyer’s league.

Agnew getting more touches should be good for the team; Storm has been okay, but playing hurt and lacking explosion the past few games.

Finally, we were top-10 in the nation in Turnover Differential…before last game. Easiest way to win a game is create more turnovers than you give away, and that will, as always, be a key factor.

I’m really interested in this game, more than any other but the Civil War, because it will be a good barometer for if we can defend UO’s Spread Read, as the two play very similarly. Especially since I just saw UO slice and dice a 3-man rush, which has been our go-to play in passing situations.

Nice to see the team respond to adversity after that first quarter with the fumble recovered for a TD and the safety on the blocked punt. After the blocked punt, Oregon State simply dominated. Defense really showed up. Offensive line played well. Take away Vaz’s sacks and OSU runs for 229 yards. Agnew struggled picking up the blitz, nice to see Ward given the opportunity. Ward was fantastic. Broke a long run and was on the verge of breaking a couple other long runs. He hit the hole hard, ran with some toughness and was great overall. He needs to be in there a lot more once Woods is ready to go again.

Vaz looked really shaky early on but bounced back and made some great throws and really hung in the pocket and took some hits. Last night we saw when the Beavers can run the ball effectively, they can be a big play offense. Fly sweep with Markus really was big and opened up a lot. Seeing it ran once or twice more a game would be nice.

Holding on Kelly on what should have been Ward’s second rushing TD was a horrible call. That was Kelly just overpowering his man and doing his job to perfection. Refs missed a clear as day PI in the first half where the defender had his arms wrapped around Cooks way before the ball was there. Pac-12 officiating really lived up to their reputation.

Other than Agnew’s blitz pickup and Vaz fumbles, the only negative was Connor Hamlett’s performance. He had been very good catching the ball this season but he was bad. Three drops, two of them really hurt Beavers drives. Needs to focus a lot more. Can’t let that happen.

Stanford is going to be tougher next week than say, a week ago. They can run the ball but also, Hogan is now their starting QB and not Nunes. Hogan is a much better passer but Stanford also doesn’t have a wideout who concerns the Beavers. The concerns are the tight ends, Ertz and Toilolo. Ertz is really good, Toilolo has great size. It will be a great challenge, but this Beavers defense should be up to the task. I think Stanford won’t have a ton of success running, Hogan will have to win it and I think the Beavers want it that way.

Something I was pondering with Vaz and his obvious cool and leadership demonstrated during the last three plus games, should he have been the one to replace Katz last year and would their have been a different result on the field (maybe at least 6-6)?

Riley’s decision to go with Mannion last year doesn’t make as much sense now that Vaz is winning unless Mannion comes back at some point. And this isn’t going away anytime soon either. Is Mannion going to wait a season and a half to start again? Interesting stuff for the future.

That was a great season, but according to Angry, Mike Riley has already hit his win ceiling.

Wish Riley would fire Banker already. His D gave up 10 points and clearly can’t scheme for a spread offense.

Next time some dipshit on here claims Mike Riley can’t make adjustments at haltime please refer back to this game and shut the fuck up because you’re a retard.

    • ObjCritic says:

It’s not that Riley can’t make adjustments and Banker can’t scheme for spread offenses, it’s that they haven’t done it on a frequent, regular, predictable basis. See OSU’s record the last several years against spread teams. Check out the last four civil wars.

I suppose only a retard would suggest Riley manages the clock and timeouts poorly too.

Most of the conference runs a spread offense plus we played BYU who also runs a spread. We seem to be doing OK against it. The last two years were an abberation for Riley and many here can’t accept that. You have the trump card with recruiting though and im certain youre not afraid to use it again here.

I won’t claim to know Mike Riley’s philosophy on timeouts but I’d bet he knows how to use them better than any of us. We dont know whats going on in the huddle and what the opposing defense is showing that would lead to an early timeout. Maybe he doesnt use them late because he doesnt want the other team to get the benefit of extra time when he sees something he can exploit.

I also give credit to Mike Riley and BDC for not over reacting when the rest of the conference switched to a spread. Instead they stuck with what they know and then started building a defense to stop it. That shit doesnt happen over night.

You don’t get rid of your coaching staff when they lose to Oregon. They happen to be our rival but they also happen to be one of the best teams in the country.

The last two years were a DIRECT result of the COACHING STAFF. It is TOTALLY on Riley and Co. Couldnt even beat a Sac State.

Abberation….lol…. You get rid of your coaching staff when they clearly stop caring….stop performing. I dont care what their ABILITY is, if they dont bother to use that ability.

You don’t know what the word abberation means? It means that 2010 and 2011 were not typical of Mike Riley at OSU. They were a deviation from the norm. The seasons count but because they were an abberation, he shouldn’t lose his job over it.

What pisses me off is when people claim that Mike Riley somehow didn’t care. You guys based your opinion on his body language on the sidelines. I may be wrong but my best guess is that nobody here is a fucking expert on body language.

If Banker has learned and become better than great, but the challenge will always be the Ducks as long as Kelly is the coach. Will there be improvement or will the Ducks do whatever they want again this year? If you can’t measure yourself by at least improving against the best, than what’s the point?

The last time Oregon State was healthy and competitive was 2009 and Oregon certainly didn’t do whatever they wanted in that game. That game could have gone either way and if Chip Kelly didn’t lift the suspension on Blount at the end, that game could have easily gone our way.

Don’t hedge your statements by suggesting Banker could learn and become a better coach. He’s not magically going to change. He has better athletes this year and has a good shot to put together a game plan.

I’d bet money that the ducks dont score 40 on us this year.

You ignore the trend of their inability to stop athletic QB’s. At least last night that guy couldn’t throw. And interestingly Perry is “old” and can’t coach according to you, but Banker can? Secondary seems improved to me. Maybe Banks has better support staff this year? Could that be a possiblilty?

I guess its fair you didnt get my sarcasm regarding Perry. I like Perry and I was mocking Angry and others here when he was hired. According to this site he was a terrible hire and just another example of Riley’s nepotism. My stance is that its a good thing if you can get a guy with so much NFL experience.

The argument that Banker cant stop a mobile QB is probably overblown. He probably doesnt scheme any worse for it than most coaches. You just notice it more because you follow the beavs so closely. Can you provide some examples where QBs ran for big yardage against us but the didn’t do it consistently against other teams? I cant find the data but I looked at Darron Thomas’ game logs and he didnt run for much against us.

Ok…..how about defending the coaching for the UW game. Seems to me that game is this year’s Sac State.

I dont doubt that Riley and co, CAN coach, but it seems clear that sometimes, and even for most of a season, they might just mail it in.

Despite having a QB who made many poor throws and WRs who dropped many catchable balls, the Beavs still had a shot to win at UW. That loss is not on the coaching. The coaches put together a plan that would have been effective had the players executed the plays – something they’ve been fairly reliable at doing this season.

You could argue that Riley should have pulled Mannion earlier but it’s a tough call to pull your starting QB when the game is tied.

You’re wrong about the game plan and play calling for UW. And if it took an adjustment to run the ball straight down the throat of a tiny ASU defense, then the coaches need to seriously rethink their professions. It was painfully obvious against UW and their more than pitiful defense. And it was painfully obvious after that game that the exact same remedy would be required for winning against ASU.

I don’t know what game some of you above were watching. But Vaz was not good for all but a half dozen or so passes. You can pick on Hamlett all you want, but two of the passes toward him were badly thrown balls that would have been INT’s had Hamlett not managed to contort his body in such a way that he got a hand on the ball. More that were supposedly targeting him were just very inaccurate. Throws to Wheaton and Cooks were behind. It seemed the only time Vaz was making a good throw was when someone was hitting him.

And his ability to move in the pocket and to move the pocket itself are almost nonexistent.

I saw that Mannion was a little off last week. But he wasn’t as bad as Vaz was yesterday. Cody killed a number of drives and/or just went three and out on several possessions because he couldn’t read the defense… that was in size 24 print… and triple spaced.

Hello? If I can see it, those who are paid to know something about football can see it. Starting a game with three passes? Brilliant. To be fair, it was two really poorly thrown passes and a play which should have been audibled when he looked at the defensive alignment.

Oh… and we still had a shot to win at UW because UW is a really really really bad team. I may have left off four or five… hundred “really”-s. But you should get the point. UW deserved to win that game about as much as UW deserved to win on Friday against Cal.

You tend to generalize and straw man this blog. You do a decent job of calling out certain ideas here and there. But you seem hell bent on allaying all your frustrations in one post. And you do it to the complete dismissal of some serious study… or with a serious dismissal of some complete study.

Hey, didshit — yes, you, Hello.

Mike Riley and Co CAN coach, and have in the past shown they CAN make adjustments at halftime. But it is very clear that sometimes they just dont bother.

Anyone who thinks a coach who shows he can win, and then gets a long term contract, so after that he need not perform, is the retard.

Angry is dead on. The UW loss is on the coaches, and this year, when it looked like Riley might FINALLY show he is really good, and actually make it to a BCS bowl, he allows the UW loss.

Now we are looking at Stanford on the road and UO, and might lose both of those. Even losing one, and probably no BCS. So that is what angry talked about — Riley has a win cap. Has had some good teams but always finds a way to lose a game he should win, and has in effect, A WIN CAP.

      STFU, retard

A win cap means that no matter what, you will not win more games than that. It doesn’t have anything to do with losing a game that (you feel) we should have won had it not been for Riley coming along and single handedly fucking it all up. Every time there is an upset, some coach just lost a game he wasn’t supposed to lose. Do you think Oregon St can find a football coach that is immune to being upset? Were’t we only favored over UW by a few points? It wasn’t even that big of an upset. Had our players made catches that a high school kid would be expected to make, the Beavers might have won.

It’s silly to say that Mike Riley didn’t care anymore once he got the contract extension. That would be a major flaw in his competitive spirit and you simply don’t get to his level without being ultra competitive. Just because he didn’t throw shit fits on the sidelines like a child (or Stoops) doesnt mean he didn’t care.

I’ll address all your dumb comments here:

      1. I never said Riley had a 7 win cap, I said 8. So, until he wins 9, shut your pie hole
      2. The 2009 Civil War was not as close as the score. That is revisionist history. Chip had the QB knee at the 10 yard line instead of punching it in for another TD against a worn down D. Ducks had control of that entire game.
      3. I never said Rod Perry was a horrible coach. I said he’d likely be a horrible recruiter since he is old. Perry hasn’t landed a single recruit yet.

The state of the Beavs is stable. This is because they picked up recruiting. After Gilstrap died, there was a huge lag. That lead to 2010-2011. Many of us saw the recruiting improving and thought the Beavs would improve–it is not rocket science. They’ll be in every game because they have better players, and they have a head coach who can and will single-handedly lose games due to clock mismanagement, misuse of challenges, bad play calling, slow adjustments, etc. That’s what the Beavs are, end of discussion.

Fair enough on the win cap. I guess I’ll have to revisit this when he gets 9.

And BS on the 2009 Civil War. How the ducks ran out the clock doesnt matter. The beavers were driving late in the 4th to take the lead but Canfield threw an INT. The ducks were then able to run out the clock.

You were not pleased with the Perry hire and you were critical of Riley as a result.

I hate how you’re made this about being right. I said Riley had an 8 win cap because he blows games every year, even when he has a good team, with clock mismanagement, personnel problems, not challenging calls, etc. A decade of history backs that up. Now you’re salivating for that 9th win so you can boast, “See Angry, no cap!” I already have a response planned out and it’s so anti-climactic. lol

I think what you don’t understand is I WANT to be wrong about things like an 8 win cap.

Interesting you would say this and tag it with end of discussion. Riley has an 8 win cap? He has 2 9 win seasons and a 10 win season. Can we open back up our “pie hole” now? Or do those seasons not count? Does angry not recognize those seasons?

        2. That knee story is also a form of revisionist history. The game was about 2 plays. The 4th down where Canfield got sacked (when we had an open receiver but OS missed a block) and the 4th down where Masoli trucked Mitchell. In a game of 160 plays it came down to 2 plays. Pretty sure that is a close game.

          In 2007 and 2008, the 9th win was post-season

Again, you guys looove this Riley win cap thing. You’ve tried to chip it down to 7 wins, and now you’re adding post-season wins and 14 game seasons.

The 2009 Civil War was never in doubt. If we had won, it would have been a miracle in the sense they’d have to overcome constant Oregon momentum (other than the Dockery pick–that was the only time the Beavs had momentum the entire game). On that last series, I think everyone who knows the Beavs knew that drive would end before they made end zone, even though we were all hoping (there’s that word again) otherwise.

While I would agree that the Ducks had most of the momentum, they really couldn’t stop us with their D. And we had them at 4th and 2 quite a bit, but just couldn’t stop the old fashioned option (give Kelly credit for bringing that out for that game, since it really hasn’t been a major part of his offense). One stop on 4th down could have been a difference maker. I agree, the Ducks could have scored on the final drive to push the score up a bit, but that doesn’t mean that they controlled the game.

All games since, they have controlled us.

Every Duck fan knows it and throws it at you when they get the chance. Riley has yet to lose less than four games in any given season.

I hope he does, but refusing to run the ball against UW makes me wonder what kind of cold medicine he uses.

Vaz’s recovery from a slow start last night was encouraging, as were the contributions of Ward, who ran hard. It was funny on his TD run to see Wheaton “jogging” next to him and looking for would-be tacklers to pick off. It his post game interview Ward said he was “running as fast as he could.” Wheaton, not so much…There looked to be a few more opportunities for Ward to the outside, but he didn’t have the speed. The addition of Chris Brown’s speed next year will be welcome.

The secondary did a pretty good job absent Poyer.

I think this is a team that can beat Stanford, but it should be Pac-12 feature game of the week, I hope they can respond in the limelight.

Looking down the road, unless OSU’s offense really gets grooving and can score points consistently, I think OSU is likely to get blown out by UO along the lines of 2008. I can see UO getting sacks, focusing on taking Cooks/Wheaton out of the game, and using a high number of possessions and all of their player speed and tempo to take their 5th straight CW.

Did my record it and watch it later thing so I don’t blow a tube. My 2 cents worth:

    Vaz -
If you think about it he just started his season and like any rookie QB has some things to work out. But he is a fierce competitor and I really like the kid… he seems to quickly work things out. He also has an arm. Very nice high speed spirals, yea not all were perfect, but a number were. He shows a toughness as ASU’s d-line is good and were knocking him around. Mannion gets a little more frazzled if pressure is on… Vaz just gets pissed and more determined. I would stick which Vaz at this point but we will she what Riley’s split personality does.

    Ward -
Really liked what I saw. Not a long run speed demon but he can hit people and does have that sudden burst and hop to the hole ability. One thing I really liked, besides his blocking, is his reads on the holes and adjusting then bursting… took time to access then went. At times there was no hole and no choice so he would just go and carry through the defense for 3 yards. A++ for Ward last night.

    Wheaton = A++
    Cooks = A
    Price (edit – Prince) = B

    Hamlett = F minus
They guy in the last 2 games has dropped how many catch-able passes. The score of these last to games have been effected by Hamlett’s inability to catch a perfectly catch-able ball. Hamlett should be call Omelet as he lays eggs.

    Doctor -
The Doctor was in last night. Probably my favorite D player last night.

    Crichton –
Most consistent stud D player this year! It was nice to see OSU bat a pass down this time.

Young ones on the D stepped up in Poyer’s absence. Our D has been good from the beginning but I think they are getting even better as we go along.

And then my last thought. The loss at Washit-ton is now in my view a crime committed by our coaches. I can’t believe they (the coaches) lost that game. It is just a crying shame.

I’m afraid we’llbe fighting the refs all game long in the civil war. This Ducks team is the conference’s best shot at a national title and i could see how the the conference as a whole could benefit from having the Ducks win. i would expect to see some drive killing holding calls on the Beavs if the game is close. UofO would have to beat themselves by turning the ball over to lose that game. just think the deck will be stacked against us unfortunately.

Maybe he stepped up with the extra accountability measures? The only game where I remember him screwing us was that one UW game. Some awful calls there but still…just one game.

Great wim for the beavs, but can’t let this officiating crew off the hook. Here is how i had it scored.

    2 missed intentional grounding calls
    Multiple missed PI calls
Multiple holds- including one so obvious that they entire crowd was chanting holding and they decide flag Riley instead
phantom holding call that cost us a touchdown
And couple personal fouls that went uncalled.

That crew needs to find a new job.

I liked having Jovan Stevenson on the kick return, I don’t know why he wouldn’t in there full time from now on. Marable just doesn’t seem to have good vision or decision making. Also, thought Sean Martin looked good. I also think Christian and Watkins were good. Ward was good, and I say we continue with whoever is healthiest. If that’s Woods then he is us the best option. I was amazed at how bad Hamlette played, he made a great catch last week, but could not hang on to anything this week?

I was impressed at how well and fast the defense was substituting during the game, they seemed to have a good plan and executed it well, the best I have seen them do that against any spread team. Now, in the second the half ASU was taking longer and longer between plays, as the defense was controlling things.

We are 5.5 underdogs to Stanford. This is the biggest game of the year. We match up well against them, the one thing I can see them exploiting is the getting a TE on one of our MLB in pass coverage. Outside of that I would say things are pretty even. Jim Wilson mentioned on the post game show that Stanford has been moving more and more away from QB Nunez who has looked average at best this season. I have not seen the backup or know little about him. I could see a back and forth game, so I think its important to get off to a quick start and get a lead early. We have not had alot of success down there lately. I was at the game four years ago, when were big favorites and Catchings fumbled the ball out of the endzone that stopped our comeback attempt. It is not intimidating crowd, but we still seem to struggle down there. A win could really give the team confidence moving forward. I really think we will need to execute efficiently, to beat them.

In the Navy, it’s a seemingly ancient term for an experienced sailor. A Master Chief is decidedly salty. A Senior might be depending on his demeanor. Chief needs to put down the coffee cup. If a First Class is salty, it’s more likely that s/he is so because of poor attitude, not the other way around. Testing in rate has something to do with advancing, but attitude will make promotion take a backseat for the remainder of a career. One can be both crusty and salty. But they are not remotely the same.

I know it sounds like rah rah high school, but it is down to the basics. Every play by every player needs to be executed like it is the last play they will ever have. If we win this one then we will beat Cal and then it is down to the Ducks. I am one of the very few that feel the kids can beat the Ducks this year. The stage must be set by beating Stanford first. If that happens our chances increase greatly. You can do it boys, but you must truly give it your all, each and everyone of you. Got a question for anybody here with knowledge about defensive schemes. whenever i watch Oregon running their spread option, i see the qb sell the run after handing off the ball. often times one or two defenders bite amd pursue him, but hold up as soon as they realize theyve been duped. by then, theyre out of the play since the running back is already several yards ahead. the question i have is, why dont the duped defenders go ahead and tackle the qb (and hard, to make him think twice about faking the run)? if the qb is selling it, wouldnt that be a legal hit? seems like you should punish the qb for leaving the pocket whenever possible.

That used to be the answer to stopping the option but recent rule changes that protect qbs and against concussions won’t really allow it. I’m sure you could get away with it a few times but there would also be a number of personal fouls in there as well. It’s what makes the spread so effective, a finesse style of football in a time where football itself is becoming more finesse due to safety concerns surrounding the sport.

I’ve been thinking recently that if it’s an option, then make the QB keep the damn ball on every play. Key on the RB with the players the QB is set to read, and send your MLB away from the direction of play. I’d be willing to bet the MLB would be finding armfuls of QB more than once.

So… always tackle the RB in the backfield, and always expect the QB to have the ball as a result.

I ran the wishbone in high school and I have an opposite theory. Have the DE tackle the QB every time. Either way, QB or RB, you must do the same thing consistently to break the option.

That’s how I’ve always seen it done. The DE tackles the RB/pitch man EVERYTIME. The MLB tackles the QB EVERYTIME. That’s your job the the read/tradtionional option. Are there rules in college to keep you from tackling a guy without the ball? Just hit them every single play.

    • ObjCritic says:
      VA:F [1.9.22_1171]

I’ve had the same question. For an offense that relies on deception and ball fakes, and that are quite frankly, well done, it seems like a defender has a “right” to tackle the player. The offense is trying to dupe the defense and hide the ball, the defense should be able to tackle the qb.

Secondly, the rules to protect QBs were, I think, originally intended to protect QB’s on pass plays, where they can really be leveled. But in the option, the QB is often running, and he’s not “exposed” or any more vulnerable than a RB.

I like Jack’s idea. For one, if you hit the RB every play, you’re not likely to risk the penalties you do with hitting the QB every play. Second, you are still reducing the “option” and funneling the ball to someone – please just not Rueben Robinson….Mariotta would have a field day juking and outrunning him.

You also have to hit the TE on every play. If he releases free, then you have problems up the seam.
