Ball State Series

168

Weather forecast indicates 17mph winds and light rain for Thursday, decent  Friday, and probably not enough rain to delay the doubleheader on Saturday.

Likely rotation is Heimlich (Fri), Tweedt and Thompson (Sat), but who’ll pitch Thursday?  Fehmel would have been a good guess before some of Casey’s remarks last week; could be him or Gambrell, Britton, or Martinek.  Heck, who knows, there are a number of arms we’ve not yet seen.  Pitching by committee?

Meanwhile, Eggers has a nice piece up on Andrew Moore.  Or, you may want to speculate on just when Mike Parker displaces Jon Warren in the broadcast booth.

Here is the (REVISED) link which should get you the school produced stream for the series:

  1. My guess would be Thompson, Heinrich, Tweedt, and Fehmel — although I could see Casey switching Thompson and Fehmel between the first and last games. I don’t see Casey changing the typical Friday/Saturday starters.

  2. Fehmel should get the go ahead today. He’s been off and it won’t change the current rotation. Bullpen is deep so I wouldn’t worry about him if he can’t give more than 5 or 6 innings.

    • Sounds like a money saving move?

What does Oakland/Las Vegas(?) have for WRs? Seems like a healthy Carr-to-Cooks connection could help the Raiders advance….not sure what their cap space Raiders have.

I’d like to see Cooks in Seattle, but I don’t see them trading for him.

Hate to see him go to Tennessee.

  3. OT – after winning the Pac 12, and beating Stanford 2/3 times, OSU WBB is ranked #8 in AP, Stanford #6.

Does this mean OSU is unlikely to get a #1 seed, and that Stanford may?

    • OSU needed to beat Stanford and for a few of the #1 seeds, ND, South Carolina, or Baylor to lose for them to jump into that conversation. Stanford winning gets them to a #2 where they had previously been a #3.

If OSU were to be a #1 seed, we’d probably be on UCONN’s side of the bracket like last year. With where we’re projected as a #2, we’re on the other side.

  4. Moore at least a year or two away from breaking into the big leagues since he’s only has two pitches. Needs a full year at AAA to face better hitters and develop his off speed pitches.

Nice to hear his fastball velocity has increased.

  5. OT, but Arian Foster is on the Joe Rogan podcast. Gives a lot of great insight into what players go through in college. Google it if you’re interested.

    • It’s on of the best daily podcast out there. The guy is genuinely interested in deep topics and has guests who can drive those topics. Combine that with humor, and it’s just fantastic. He hand selects guests who he finds to be the more interesting people in the world. It’s great, give it a shot, but not the very early ones. Those were pretty ghetto. The older ones he’s in his house. The newer/good ones he’s in a room with posters and a brick wall behind him. They’re all on youtube.

      • Cool, i’ll give it a listen. Love this format so much more tham radio. Especially whem they dont have to change their content to please advertisers.
Do you ever listen to the AC show? He sortof paved the way for the Joe Rogans of the world who now have their own show.

        • I remember AC from Love Line. I liked him on there, but hated his voice so much.
I think YouTube paved the way for Rogan. Anyone with interesting ideas can get on there and talk about them without worrying about advertisers (which of course flock to the popular ones). Game changer.

The one thing I don’t like about Rogan is he’s a bit of a control freak on his website’s forum. It conflicts with his on the air persona. Still a really good podcast, just find guests/topics that interest you, otherwise it can ramble on (usually 2hrs or more per show).

    • Depends on the topic. He talks over his guests a lot, which can make it hard to listen too. Overall most of his stuff is good though.

        • The fart it is a wondrous thing that’s made inside your belly,
It comes out of your bottom and is often very smelly.
Now, everybody does them, from beggars through to queens
And you can do some beauties when you’ve been eating beans!

So don’t worry about those rumblings,
Be proud of all your Trumps!
But remember, if you strain too hard
Your farts come out as lumps!

  6. Fehmel tosses 8 shutout innings, Englebrekt gets his 4th save. Beavs win 2-0, now 11-1 on the season. Double header tomorrow

  7. Adley hitting .182 so far, when it clicks he will be a shot in the arm for the O. Would guess he’d end the season above .275 given his resume coming in.

    • At 151 pounds, who is he gonna beat up?? Also note they list him at only 6’2″. Not 6’4 as does Oregonian.

      $12,500 seems pretty high bail…..

      • Sounds like the type of thing that wouldn’t have had police involvement in the past, but now that everybody has cell phones, they’re quick to pull the trigger on that 911 call.
Once that call is made for a DV type situation, somebody is going down to the station.

        • Yep. I’m in my 50’s but there was a time in my younger days I was in plenty of altercations that would get a ride in the back of a patrol car today. Sometimes people just need a punch in the face to get the idea.

Cell phones, snowflake syndrome and, especially, playing ball for a college program, hold these kids to higher standard, however.

Be interesting to see how WT handles this.

          • KEZI story has the most detail. Seems like a plea deal is the likely outcome with comm service and anger management classes.

Multi game suspension to start next year seems appropriate.
2 games for getting arrested and embarrassing the program.
1 game because the public will demand it.

Usually athletes live with each other so that’s weird he wasn’t. That usually keeps things from becoming public.

    • Hey Kendal! Why didn’t you put up more of a fight ON the basketball court and DURING the season???

      Good job Jackass

  8. So lame that a routine fist fight will land you in jail these days. I mean, who hasn’t done that at least once? Assuming that’s what it was of course…

    • I was on jury duty in January. Guy punched another guy knocking a tooth out. The state DA wanted to get the offender on aggravated assault, but we the jury thought that was extreme, so we nailed him for assault instead. Funny the guy who lost the tooth didn’t even want to press charges (state found out when the hospital notified the police of the incident). We were all sitting there in deliberation wondering what a waste of money and time spent.

  9. Through 3.5, Luke humming along, 7 K’s and 49 pitches. Beavs up 2-0.

Further proof that Casey reads AB?? No sooner is Adley’s .182 avg mentioned here but he is moved to #8 in the order today!

  10. An end that fits the craptastic year Tinkle had. This Oregon State needs to realize you don’t reward for a good year as it is plenty likely the person will underperform soon after. Next time a coach has a good year, you say “Back it up, then we can talk.” Separates the flukes from the true winners. Seems so silly to be granting extensions with 1 decent year out of 2 or 3. That’s nust average at most and past ADs at OSU act like it is better than that and they almost always get proven wrong. Rueck on the other hand showed a continuing trajectory of achievement and teaching high goals. Only he and Pat Casey in the last 10+ years have truly earned extensions. The rest should only be getting 2 years at end of their contract when you are are deciding if worth keeping. Then they have to show enough to deserve to stay.

  11. After 7 full, still 2-0. Luke at 91 pitches.
Beavs have 9 hits AND have left 10!
Got away with errors by Madrigal and Grenier in the t7

    • Beavs with 3 E’s today; and again, leave too many on base….an even dozen LOB today.
A win’s a win, BUT in some ways Beavs seem to be playing down to the competition. Pitching still remains strong and deep.
Tail end of the order (even with the Rutschman move today) continues to hit well.

      • They are one of two teams we’ve played with a winning record (at least since I last checked records on Tuesday). They’ve played similar opponents tough. A sweep would be great, but I’m not counting on it for the gap in pitching and the current lack of clutch hitting.

      • I expect Thompson to start Saturday. That said, Beavs gotta get #3 before worrying about a sweep. But if I’m betting I’d still go with the sweep.

    • Mulholland has been so reliable, it’s kinda nice to see someone else (Gambrell), although so far Gambrell doesn’t look too sharp.

  12. After today Heimlich’s ERA is a minuscule 0.31

“Luke Heimlich has had a great start to the 2017 season. The junior is 3-0 with a 0.31 earned run average in his first four starts. The left-hander has struck out 36 to just three walks in 28 2/3 innings. Opponents have 16 hits off him and are batting .157.”

That is fucking impressive no matter who the competition is. I’ll go out on a limb and state now that Hemlich will win the Pac-12 pitcher of the year award and shoot his draft stock up the boards.

  13. As anticipated, Jake Thompson (ERA 1.45) gets the start today. First pitch 1:30….the return of Parker; I enjoyed the banter between Jon Warren and Jim Wilson.

Adley in the 7 hole today, Preston Jones starting in RF

  14. A nice around the horn DP gets Jake out of the 6th, pitch count 80.
Beavs up 3-1 and have left 9 on base in their 5 innings at bat.

  15. Three outs to go vs a poor looking Ball St. Breaks going the Beavs way today.
Very nice to see Adley with an honest RBI triple to rt center, in the 8th, Beavs cruisin’ 8-1.
Hickey on to close it out after Thompson had a nice 7.1 inning outing.

  16. ASU will be a good first conference test. On the road against a team that has struggled but played a tougher non conference than the Beavs.

Pitching is this team’s strength. Going to need 3 quality starts.

Wonder if Thompson has finally put it together. It seems like he’s always pitching from the edge of a cliff. Stats do show an improvement. Walk rate is down and k rate is up.

  17. TCU falls to the anteaters, second day in a row. Don’t like it going to their heads, but Beavs likely to move up even further in rankings.

  18. #1 TCU lost again to an unranked UC Irvine, and #2 Florida losing to Seton Hall and two games to Florida Gulf Coast during the midweek — OSU to be in the running for a top 3 ranking going into next week’s series.

  19. FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGE: Gina out with a report, and a release from OSU. Links below.
Disappointing to see not a word about the o-line.
McM getting about half the passing opportunities given to Luton.
Nall participated, got 6 carries as did AP.

  20. S-I on the Cooks trade to NE:

“The latest development: speedy wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Bill Belichick has had his eye on Cooks for years since the Patriots and Saints shared training camp practices.

…. “I’m glad we don’t have to play him twice a year and he’s not in our division,” Belichick told reporters after a preseason game last year. “He’s a really good player.”

…As Tom Brady officially gets over the hill with his 40th birthday in August, he’ll have his best receiving corps in years. ”

    http://www.si.com/nfl/2017/03/11/nfl-free-agency-brandin-cooks-patriots

  21. At least Brandin isn’t some football workaholic who sweats every detail.

He won’t earn his SB ring next year… gifted to NE by a league satisfied by profits.

      • Sing what?

There are fat lazy owners in the NFL who just enjoy the business of the NFL. They don’t care about winning, unless they see an opportunity for some cash in the offing. But that would take work and a long term vision for success. Why do that when you already got a money spigot like an NFL team?

  22. Re scrimmage: Jaydon Grant sounds like a PWO name to watch. Picked off 2 different QBs in the scrimmage and seems like I keep reading good things. Andre Bodden as well.

  23. GT has a couple pieces up which, to me, demonstrate the leadership qualities of both Ryan Nall and Sydney Wiese. While those two were not the subject of the articles, the quotes from each of them showed the kind of leadership any good team needs. We are gonna miss Syd in more ways than one.

FWIW: the scrimmage article doesn’t have one word about the performance of McM (or the O-line, except a mention that the running game was being shut down). Obviously, these scrimmage/practice reports are influenced by which athlete the reporter interviews.

  24. Willie’s been into the fortune cookies again:
“Love is giving someone the power to destroy you, but trusting them not to”

  25. Colorado state and osu are moving their game from late september to late august.
Apparently csu wants to unveil their new stadium against a P5 team amd we were willing to accomodate. So football starts early this year, and we an extra get a bye week before the hardest part of our schedule.

  26. Beavs jumping up in the rankings. Consensus top 5 team.

Does it feel like it though? Non conf schedule was not great. Didn’t really test the team.

Concerns headed into the conf schedule,

    1. Can the starters keep giving a lot of innings?
    2. Who else will be relied on from the bullpen? Casey used a lot of freshmen early. Guys I thought would contribute haven’t seen the field.
    3. Will there be a steady lineup? Don’t think Casey has used a lineup twice.
    4. Will the offense struggle like it did last year when conf play came around?

Need to get momentum going early in conf play.

    • If the bats struggle to put guys across home plate like they have, we will be a 3rd or 4th place team in league. I don’t see the trend getting better given the Beavers recent history in league play. Unearned runs are also huge when you scrape only one or two runs together, and there have been two or three errors in some games.

      • I’m confused how you talk about the Beavs being the 3rd or 4th best team in the Pac, then 2 minutes later comment about running the table being #1.

      • Hard to argue with concerns about the lack of timely hitting. For the season, the LOB average is 8. BUT, against Ball State it was 11. The middle part of the lineup needs to step it up if this team is to stay above 85%.

Tied in with the question of how long the starters can continue to give more than 6 or 7 innings is the question of needing a right hander out of the pen. Hickey has been mentioned as a possibility but little is said about Tommy Paul and nothing about Scotland Church. Max and Mulholland sure seem solid from the left side.

I wonder how much of the problem with errors is due to the lineup switching around frequently.

As others have said, early rankings don’t mean a lot.

EDIT: meant in response to Bill’s 10:34 post.
