Game thread up a day early because the old thread was getting long.

Utah is a mediocre team, so expect a minimum of 2 out of 3. On a personal note, I can’t stand Utah fans, so I’m hoping for not only the sweep, but to pummel them each game. ;)

Go Beavs!

  1. I check Olive and Canzano for their OSU coverage, which is usually weak.

How long will Canzano be butthurt over the Ducks Final 4 loss and ignore that the Beavers Baseball team is #1 in the country?

  2. I incorrectly predicted the Beavs would drop at least one game to Stanford last weekend. So in continuing that trend I’m predicting a Utah sweep.

  3. The article about the basketball team is up. OldBeav, if I forget, at game time tomorrow can you date the baseball thread so as to move it to the top — once the game starts?

After the games, on Sunday, I’ll put the basketball thread back on top ahead of baseball.

  4. Utah does have annoying fans. Not as annoying or nauseating as Udub or our quite psychotic neighbors in Eugene, but they’re close. I think the Beavs win all 3.

  5. I think expectations have gone up to where a sweep is expected. Especially playing at home.

Utah is a better offensive team than Stanford but Stanford took two of three from Utah. If the beavs hit, the games won’t be close.

I don’t like messing with lineups but Grenier could be due for the #2 spot soon.

  6. Grenier OBP is .402
    Larnach OBP is .440
    Gretler OBP is .378
    Kwan OBP is .338

Larnach would be best candidate for the #2 position to advance the lineup, although Grenier would be good too. Grenier with better slugging so he is better suited at the 3,4,5 positions along with Harrison. Kwan would be best at 7,8 IMHO.

    • The reaction of the fans makes me think it isn’t just a Parker thing. I don’t have video though, very slow internet connection.

    • Luke said something to him as he was walking off and the 3rd base coach just lost it. The umpires had to push everybody back to their dugouts.

        • So much this. It was either on the TD or 2 point conversion but the throw was 10 feet over the receivers head and not even fucking close to catchable but the refs still threw the PI flag. Awful call that gave Utah hope in that game they eventually won. Last trip to SLC before they joined the Pac. SLC and Honolulu were two places you could fully expect some home cookin. I remember some bad calls in the 1999 Oahu bowl and the last game of the regular season in 2006 in Honolulu.

  7. First baseman just dropping the ball would have been a tough way to give up the go ahead run. Glad the error did not escalate.

  8. Is the very best sports psychology simply winning??
These guys now feel they can win any game and are NEVER out of it, no matter how things appear. How will they handle losing?

OT: Banker checking out the ucks spring practice……really!
This piece by Greif (who is back in the good graces of Willie) includes a video of Leavitt which is worth a laugh.

  9. OT- but it gave me a laugh. The Oregonian spent most of last week “pimping” the commemorative Final Four book they were going to publish on the Quacks. There was a small blurb in the paper this past Wednesday that the book had been cancelled due to lack of pre-orders. The air went out of that balloon in a hurry!

  10. Sounds like we picked up a running back grad transfer from TCU today, Trevorris Johnson. Seems like a serviceable guy who could help fill the depth chart after Lucas left and Cook graduated.

  11. Parker has to be the biggest loser ever. He’s huffing and puffing at KJ Harrison over a pretty common mistake (whether to flip to the pitcher or take it yourself). Dude went into meltdown mode in T-2 seconds.

    • Ok but he was literally 2 feet from the bag when he threw it to eisert who was 7 feet from 1st… Be honest, you didn’t think it was a good play at the time, did you?

      • Of course it wasn’t a good play, but it happens all the times, as do all types of errors. If he can’t handle an error he should retire.

  12. So, Nate has worn out Mulholland (81 pitches today after appearances in the previous 2 games) and now we have Jake Thompson pitching Sunday. This is Thompson’s chance to make a real difference, but Utah bats will have something to say about that.

The schedule next week doesn’t look good for what could very well be a worn out pen, Gonzaga Tuesday and a Thursday start to the series with the dawgs. Notice that the dawgs play Monday, giving them one more day of rest leading up to the “never forget Meggs” series.

This is where we’ll see the value of the depth of the Beavs bullpen.

  13. Don’t know if our tire selling buddies will have complete highlights of the Saturday game here, the baseball twitter has ’em up as of about 10:10 today.

    https://twitter.com/@BeaverBaseball

BTW, this revenue producing highlight thing is working well as far as I’m concerned. Haven’t heard any complaints. Wonder how the hit count has been since the change?

  14. Jake Thompson with another great outing so far. It’s close between him and Heimlich but Jake has been Oregon State’s best starter in Pac-12 play. Nice to see him putting it altogether now

  15. Jake “he still stinks” Thompson goes 8-1/3, Hickey finishes it off. Beavs win 5-1. 23 straight wins, ties the all time Pac-10/12 record win streak set by Arizona St in 1988

    • Is that his longest outing this season?

What’s the record streak for conference play?

Will the streak now end because it’s bad ju ju talking about it?

      • Zags will be a tough out on Tuesday as they just took 2 of 3 from #19 San Diego. If the Beavs bring the same effort they have the last 2 midweek games they’ll get beat.

IIRC the Beavs lost to Gonzaga in both 2006 and 2007. Maybe we want them to beat the Beavs?

        • They be a tournament team last year too, so yes, well coached and know how to win close games. They’ve beaten UW, UCLA, Cal and Cal State Fullerton. I can see the streak ending with them — I don’t know how many more one run wins we’ve go left in these guys….need to save some for the postseason. Probably good to break the streak anyways and get that pressure off their back.

          • Agree, Zags are for real. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the streak end on Tuesday. Get that pressure off and go into the series with the dawgs starting a new one! Still, it remains to be seen how this squad will react to a defeat.

Seems NOBODY is missing the significance of the series with Meggs, all the writers have mentioned it and Parker can’t keep himself from elaborating. Parker is encouraging fans from Oregon to attend and said “Tumwater Dave” is expected to be there. At least this one is on PAC12 for those who cannot make the trip, so much better than streaming over the net.

        • I too agree with oneoldbeav at some point errors and not smashing teams make me wonder. Sure it is obvious it would make a fan feel better if this team was wining by 3 to 4 more runs a game, These close games can harden a team but how long with it last until games don’t go your way?

          • Reminds me of the women’s basketball team. Winning but rarely dominating like one would expect a top team to. You know there’s a stinker just waiting to plop out

          • A loss will eventually happen, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Might help to give the team more urgency to tighten up loose ends once they realize they are vulnerable.
Never expected to see a historic winning streak this season anyway, so this is all gravy to me. The fact that they can pull off this long of a streak while simultaneously carrying the #1 ranking for most of the season is really damn impressive. We are getting every teams’ best shot in every game. They all want to say they took down the #1 team, yet they haven’t. Would love to be winning by a wider margin, but that’s just not realistic. I’m just happy we’re finding a way to pull out the wins in these close ones.

I think every week since Arizona, somebody in this forum has said “I think this is the week we lose one”
Well, they’ve done a good job of proving you wrong so far. Let’s enjoy the ride.

  16. Utah stinks, so yeah, still not sold on Thompson. Beat some good teams. Then we can talk.

Go Beavs. What’s the record for consecutive wins and also best winning %?

  17. Its too bad nobody pays any attention to college baseball, the beavers are usually pretty good. Of course the one sport we’re good at, nobody cares LOL go beavs

        • I think recent designs of several of these cars has become less satisfying overall. Changes have been made to make them different than previous versions but not necessarily better in my opinion. You could probably just chalk that up to “taste” and the fact that I really enjoyed the R8 and DB design work in 2008 and immediately thereafter for a few years.

Since then there have been incremental improvements in empirical performance (0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile, etc.) but I don’t think those gains are worthwhile tradeoff when combined with a vehicle that is less aesthetically pleasing to me. Admittedly this is only a problem in the abstract or hypothetically, not a real world problem for me….

I like the 911R, though could do without the stripes:

          • I can see how you would feel that way with all but the GT-R and the Turbo S. Those things just keep getting better.

I think the DB9 and R8 were great cars when they first came out, but they seem to be trying to add more to what needs only minor tweaks. They did a complete overhaul on the M5 about a decade ago, and that killed their appeal. Now the M3 fills that market.

In the end, I’d pocket $175k and have just as much fun tricking out a Golf GTI.

          • Ha! I was just looking at GTIs and Golf Rs the other day…chipping them gets some impressive performance numbers and the GTI looks like the better value.

Agree the GT-R gets better, it was always a bit crude. Godzilla was a great nickname for it, not beautiful, but powerful and with violent acceleration.

Audi’s designs R8 has become less beautiful, more angular, almost robotic looking if that makes sense. And on M cars, I saw a review recently that called the M2 what the M3 was supposed to be/used to be….

The 911s seem to change in smaller, evolutionary increments, not losing their character but updating enough to refresh them and distinguish them from prior year’s models. I don’t care for soft tops normally, but I thought they did a great job with the Boxster about 4 years back.
