Baseball: Beavs vs Abilene Christian

The four game series gets underway at 5:35 today. All games can be seen on the school produced stream.

How’d the Beavs end up with this series?  Lundeberg at the GT has a piece which explains.  An excerpt: “When I found out we had the bye this weekend, I just got on the phone and started calling everyone,” said associate head coach Pat Bailey, who handles the team’s scheduling. “I hope as long as I’m here, we never have the late bye again.”

Should be great weather, GO BEAVS!

      • That “tightness” in the Mighty Quad of Mighty Kwan seems to be lingering.

This from a piece by Danny today, Centerfielder Steven Kwan – the speedy No. 2 hitter in the OSU order – practiced Wednesday after sitting out Sunday against Washington State with a quad injury he suffered the previous day.
“It’s not nearly as bad as I thought it would be,” Kwan said. “The trainer said it’s progressing better than they expected.”

  1. At 70 pitches, Luke is sent back to the mound to start the 7th. Why? Likely because he wasn’t actually “sent” may have insisted on going some more.
EDIT: eight pitches got him through the seventh, so he’s back for the eighth.

    • Maybe because he will get an extra day of rest before the regional starts next Friday???? Considering there’s only two conferences that don’t hold postseason tournaments, I highly doubt the teams that are participating in them are resting pitchers.

Maybe you should be more concerned about LOB numbers????

      • And, since we are in the area of “maybe”, maybe you should be more concerned about the lack of actual game work the pen is getting.

        • Agree OOB. The pen needs to get some game action. You are not going to win it all with only your starters. Perfect series for using situational matchups and letting some of the guys get some extended action.

  2. Watching B1G tourney at the same time. Maryland player gets hit on the elbow and the ump rules he did not try to avoid it. Terrible call. Maryland coach goes jackass and as the camera pans in you can clearly hear him yelling bullshit, multiple fucking bullshits, and calling the ump a fucking piece of shit after he gets tossed! Pretty funny.

  3. Damn! Luke with a highlight behind the back snag of a ground ball!!
I thought the Madrigal behind the back flip last inning was something, but Luke outdid that for sure!

  4. Lundeberg at the GT is putting out some good, and timely, stuff on Beavs Baseball, not sure if he covers anything else.
His story on tonights 9-0 win includes remarks on Luke staying in the game so long and on Jones’ triple. Hint, the ball “clanged off the glove” of the ACU center fielder, and, Yeskie wanted to pull Luke after 7 but Luke “lobbied” his way into an extra inning.

“I was able to keep my pitch count low, so I wanted to keep building endurance,” Heimlich said. “For me, I don’t want to necessarily take time off because I feel that I’ll regress going into regionals, so I wanted to keep pushing myself and continue to keep building my stamina.”

  5. Do ya pull Jake after 5 innings having given up 10 hits (4 XBH) and 4 runs? His last out in the 5th was after going 3-2 with a couple fouls, cannot wait to pull him hoping to do so after a couple K’s, ain’t likely to happen.
He is at 83 pitches. With his history of lack of mental toughness (in the past seasons) it isn’t an easy decision. I think I’d pull him rather than see things go further downhill.

    • Have you ever heard why he doesn’t have an analyst with him? What happened to Jim Wilson? Parker by himself is overbearing to my ears.

      • Exactly, with Wilson he’s tolerable.
I’m not sure what happened to Wilson. I haven’t watched too many games this year and didn’t even realize he was gone.

        • Wilson is busy teaching HS in Vancouver and can only make it to a limited number of games. Parker did say that Wilson will be involved in post-season broadcasts.

Not sure, but Wilson may also be involved in American Legion ball in SW Washington.

  6. Hard to criticize a 46-4 team, but those were some shitty at bats in the 8th. They kind of deserve to lose the game, but I don’t want to see the notoriety of the Beavs being on the bad end of the biggest upset in college ball this season.

  7. I hate to say it, but I kind of wanted ACU to win there. Beavs don’t need this win at all. Would have been a neat deal to see these hobos slay Goliath.

(Sorry, I’m watching the game with Riley)

    • Kind of a shitty way to lose a chance to win. Lots of pitchers have imploded with their control late in games against the Beavs this year for some reason. I wouldn’t be that upset if “White Fielder” smacked a homer! I’m sure he would take his team and the Beavers out for beers afterwards.

    • I could see the bright side to a loss, still don’t like it. Do these guys really need that kind of a wake-up call? I wouldn’t have thought so.

BTW: KJ looks to not be near 100% with that ankle, very concerning for post season. Even Mighty Kwan looks to be days away from a true return to form. Depth may be seriously tested next week.

      • Wake up call without the loss?
Two rodent miracles in one night! Gophers come back from 0-4 and 8-4 to win 9-8 on a pinch hit HR.
Brandon E pitched great. Jake looked like retro Jake. The Harrison injury is concerning.

    • A better throw would have made that Atwood play at the plate very interesting, I think he’d have been out.

      Decent outing for Eisert, 87 pitches with 3 hits, 3 K’s, 1BB.

Now, when is Adley gonna get some rest? And how many innings will Mulholland and Hickey get in the next two days?

  8. Wonder if Fehmel will see any time on the hill this series. I’m hopeful he gets his head right…we are going to need him in June.

  9. OT but Chip Kelly gets hired by ESPN. Maybe they fired all those guys and gals a few weeks ago to pay his salary?

  10. Drew looks to be in good shape to fill a starter role in the post season. Through 4 his pitch count is 57, has given up 2 hits and no BB. He’s got 5 k’s. Even with this level of competition I think he will be ready for whatever comes up next week.

I know Adley is continuing to build chemistry with all the pitchers, but really think he’d benefit from taking a few innings off today and tomorrow.

  11. Anderson singles past the lumbering white Prince Fielder who looked like he could have made the play. Result? 2 RBI’s to make it 5-0 good guys.

  12. Beavs hanging on by a thread to #1 RPI. Each win vs ACU has lowered the RPI due to their record. I think the #1 national seed is locked up even if they fall in RPI tomorrow.

  13. Mercy rule a benefit for both teams. ACU is running out of arms and it prevent more chances for injury for the Beavs.

Hopefully they can pull off the same trick tomorrow. I think Fehmel gets the ball tomorrow. If he’s healthy the team will need him in the postseason.

  14. Prediction on who’s coming to Corvallis for regionals

    #4 – Texas Southern
    #3 – Winner of Gonzaga/BYU
#2 – Iowa – if they win the Big10 tourney.

Lot of #1 seeds in conference tourneys are going down. Bursting a lot of bubbles for at large bids.

    • BYU whipped the zags, 10-3 and 16-3.
Aside from the not playing Sunday thing, I’d have liked to see the zags win; OSU and zags seem to be developing a relationship/mini rivalry in other sports and have that (or did have) WT daughter connection.

    • meh

They can carve out Sundays for whatever reason they want. But Fitt is right. Start the series on Friday. I’m sure those honorable peeps, whose namesake’s legacy played on a lot of Sundays, IIRC, can play on Monday if they make it that far. There are some Monday games every year due to weather. This can be treated like that.

  15. Finally, Adley gets to rest his legs; DH today.
Larnach is having problems on the basepaths lately, not necessarily all his fault. Nice though, to see him beginning to raise his BA in time for post season.
Same jabber mouth at 1b for ACU.
Atwood with a HR in the 2nd picks up another RBI in the 3rd with a 4 pitch walk with bases jacked.
    3-0 Beavs with 2 down in b3.

  16. Fehmel not seeming to fool anyone, Faces 4 gives up one hit; 16 pitches no K’s or BB’s. Not as good a performance for which we hoped.
Mulholland on to start the t8.
    4-2 Beavs.

  17. Beavs win 4-2. Finish season 49-4 and 26-1 at home. Nice regular season. Most importantly let’s finish #1 in Omaha.

      • I think you are right; that’s part of the beauty of having a degree of pitching depth.

The problem could come if the first guy out of the pen falters.

  18. D1 just out with their “Final Field of 64 Projection”
They differ from Bill (they have Texas Southern in Houston), they’ve got Michigan, Gonzaga, and Central Connecticut State coming to Corvallis.

C.Conn.State can’t be as tough as the anteaters? Can they?

If they are correct, Beavs will get to play Fri-Sunday. No BYU.

Anyone know the track record of these D1 guys? I see they have Stanford hosting an all California field and Houston with all Texas teams.

    • I have a hard time seeing a mid major like Gonzaga getting in with an RPI of 49. Or UCLA for that matter. Pac is probably a 3-bid league again.

    • Well they had the beavs in last year as a 3rd seed…so they are terrible.

I think for the most part they are right in terms of who is a 1,2,3 and 4. But for which regional that’s a tossup. The committee does like to keep teams as close to home as they can but I think that happens more for east coast than west coast teams.

I figure Texas southern would come here since they are the worst team in the field.

The other thing is that the committee does not seed 1 to 64 like the basketball tournament. Only seeds the top 8.

    • Sarcasm?
Strong finish? If the humpers get in it will prove Meggs has pictures!
After all, they lost 1 to ASU, all three to Stanford, and 1 to SC; that’s only 4 wins over their last 9 games.

    • FWIW, Beavs beat Neb in February. 10-1 and 5-2. And, as I understand, the chants of “You got Riley” echoed through the stadium!

LSU regional? They got Texas Southern, who Bill said is the weakest team in the field. SEC bias again?

    • I have seen Neb. in person three times, twice in Surprise and once in Minneapolis. Riley chant was awesome! Watched them a couple times in the B1G tourney. They are potentially dangerous.
If this years( until last week) Jake shows up, we have a decided pitching advantage. They have a veteran team with some good hitters and some decent talent. KJ has to produce. We will have to score some runs. Hopefully we can crush the first team and keep Luke’s pitch count down so god forbid we need him to pitch again this weekend he is good for a couple innings.
If we choke to Nebraska, somebody please call the Twin Cities suicide prevention line.

  19. The more I watch the show, the more pissed I get about last year! Screw that SE Louisiana coach and his “no doubt we would get an at large berth”. Really? With a 20 loss season, go ask Pat Casey about a P-12 team, 16 games over .500 not getting a bid!!!

    Anyway, time for revenge.

    • Agreed.

Revenge. The fact that UCLA got in as the 3rd place team in the Pac-12 (sound familiar?), was only 5 games over .500 overall and had an RPI in the 50’s just further proves the point of how the Beavs got bent over last year by the selection committee.

Add in the fact that once again the deck is heavily stacked in favor of the SEC and ACC (9 of the 16 regional hosts).

Looks like I was spot on about Gonzaga not getting in (pats sefl on back).

This regional does not look difficult to me at all and I fully expect the Beavs to end it next Sunday night.

I also FULLY welcome the possibility of an ACC or SEC opponent coming to Goss for a super regional. However, Clemson was middling there at the end and lost something like 10 of their last 12 games. They have no business being a regional host, only are due to the fact they’re Clemson and play in the ACC. They aren’t getting out of their own regional. Vanderbilt or St Johns is going to win.

  20. Anyone think we will get an idea about new Deputy AD Dan Bartholomae anytime soon? He replaces Massari who is moving on. Massari was pretty well engaged so the new guy has a fair amount to prove to provide similar value. Focus is on capital projects so he will be very much involved with future plans for the west side of Reser.

With Tyner this year to complement Nall and Pierce, I think rhe stadium will be full for most of the season. Andersen is developing a good product and it is picking up steam at a good time. We should see some kind of renderings within the next 10-15 months I would imagine as far as laying out an initial concept for plans.

  21. Early previews of the regional opponents,

    1. Holy Cross – RPI 210. I figured Texas Southern here since they were worse but no complaints about this selection. The conference they are in only has 6 teams so it didn’t take as much luck as other tournaments to win. Similar to ACU, bad pitching and defense. Hitting is less than ACU. Did take one at USC early in the year.

    2. Yale – RPI – 48! – A bit surprising how high their RPI is, played Clemson and Holy cross in non conf. Won 5 of 6 vs Holy Cross. Lost both vs Clemson. 16-4 in conference play, 16-14 in non conf. Hitting is decent but pitching holds them back.

    3. Nebraska – RPI – 42
Seen them twice this year. They likely won’t see the same pitchers from Feb, Heimlich and Tweedt started those games. Likely will see Drew or Jake. Decent all around team. No significant weakness. Likely the team to give the Beavs the most trouble. Started off the season at 3-6 and rebounded to a the reg season big10 title.

For the Beavs, it’s all about hitting. Pitching even when “struggling” is still better than most teams. Hitting will win them the regional. Put the teams away early and don’t let up.

For the most part, the committee picked a good regional for the Beavs. A team that’s only in because they took their auto bid, a team from a lesser conference and a decent big conference team.

      • Yeah i noticed and thought the same thing. I guess he plays for the same high school as jared goff and almost beat his single season records. Hopefully he can make the transition to the pac 12 like Goff. He definitely has the tools. I saw his film a month or so ago and was impressed. Moves pretty well.

    • I would say he’s a Mannion Lite after watching his film. He has OK footwork (more mobile than Mannion) but not as cannon of arm. I think he’s a better prospect than we’ve had the last two years. I really would’ve liked having Brevin White join the team. Makes for more of an “upgrade” compared to our current crop of QBs. Who knows what’ll happen between now and signing day…

      • I think White is still in play and I’d think they’d take 2 QBs if White wants to come to Corvallis. Might want 2 QBs either way.

    • That’s a possibility. I wonder if GA would consider taking two QBs in this class… White would be a no-brainer.

    • Was out all weekend, so catching up on things. My guess is that WSU and OSU both heard from White today amd he probably told him he was going elsewhere, so the immediately gave the green light to their plan B guy (petras for us and cammon cooper for WSU)

I really dont think we’re getting white at this point as a 2nd QB.

      I could be wrong though.

  22. OT: ucks baseball.
According to Tyson Alger at the big O, Horton has been offered a multi-year deal to continue coaching. The kicker?……..It is for less than he now makes!

Horton is 63 and has made no secret of his belief that if uncle phil were to let him go he’d have no trouble finding another coaching position. Hmmm

  23. OT: The two recruits for baseball from WI are now rated #1 and #2 in that state. The pitcher has added a couple of mph to his fastball and is up to 91. Kid sounds like a left handed version of Andrew Moore with great mechanics and control. The 3rd base prospect is a muscular kid that has great power potential. He has played multiple sports so he has a great upside when he focuses in exclusively on baseball.

  24. So are tickets to this weekends baseball regional pretty much impossible to buy?
I dont see any information about it anywhere. Has anybody else tried or seen anything?

      • Tried it this morning around 8:30. In typical Oregon State fashion, there was no mention of an “option #2” despite instructions to choose 2. Then, after listening to a recorded hold message for 10 minutes, it went to a voicemail which said to leave a call back number. Still no call back as of 11:30.

        • I called back. Theyve changed the message to include option 2, then you get transferred to the pac12 ticket line and put on hold. When i did get through to an actual ticket sales person, he told me theyre completely sold out and sounded annoyed that i was asking.
I think this was a Pac 12 guy and not an OSU rep.

Maybe time to update the message to say “we’re sold out, thank you” ?

  25. Spencer Petras – Will likely rate as a 3 star recruit.

The good – Nice touch, mechanics, good enough mobility.

    The things to work on:
    – Arm strength. A few times he really drove the ball on short/medium throws but on the deep throws, most were lofted high. Sometimes the WR had to pull up to catch the ball.
    – Accuracy – Finished a little over 60% last year. This could be improved with arm strength. Fit the ball into tighter spaces.

    Solid pickup

Other good thing – I think this will take the Dukart kid out the equation. He was going to be a project while Petras looks like he could contribute after redshirting.

  26. I suggest – altho I don’t think I’m the least bit original in this: calling Yale, Nebraska, Holy Cross ticket offices. They will have will-call booths at the ball park. They can’t release the tickets until Friday and, as I understand it, if they have your credit card details and there are some tickets left, they will put one through and notify you by email.
It occurs to me that Holy Cross and Yale aren’t going to be selling too many tickets to their home fans and I assume their athletic departments would rather get the ticket revenue than send the tickets back to the Pac-12/OSU/whoever

  27. That 5* WBB player transferring out of Notre Dame has chosen Oregon today. Man, these Oregon schools will be stacked.

    • Something doesn’t smell right in Eugene with regards to women’s hoops. They haven’t accomplished anything but pulling in big talent. Rueck had to grow it organically to get where OSU is today.

      • Rueck explained that he doesn’t fill all his scholarships because no one wants to sit on the bench. Prima donnas usually don’t do well together. Perhaps Graves is planning a 2-platoon system. Mark Campbell supposedly pulls in the “big talent.”
