PAC12 Baseball begins; WBB dances, but for how long?

299

Everyone has had time to weigh in on the previous thread about Jonathan Smith and, at over 300 comments, seems time for a new thread.

WBB plays at 9am tomorrow (on ESPNU).  A victory for the gals would lead to a likely matchup with host Tenn (The LADY Vols).  FWIW: ESPN’s brand-new Basketball Power Index (BPI) for women’s college basketball gives the Beavs a 41% chance of beating the LADY Vols and making the Sweet 16.

Baseball begins the first true road series of the year, also tomorrow, at 7pm.  No TV, but Mike Parker returns to the mic having, mercifully, ended the MBB season.

While Stanford and UCLA appear to be the cream of the PAC12 crop (aside from the #1 ranked Beavs), Cal shapes up to be a good gauge of where this team stands without Madrigal and Casey. Pitching needs to take a step forward to keep games close against Cal, which leads the Pac-12 in most offensive categories, including batting average (.325), home runs (24), slugging percentage (.517) and on-base percentage (.414). OSU is second in each category except homers.

Cals offensive stats have been built against opponents like: Brown, Cal State Bakersfield, Baylor, and Xavier……mostly at home in Berkeley.  Are those stats misleading?

First true road game of the year for the guys, Casey out for the first two games.  Natural grass, possibly not well drained.  Yep, it will be a test.

GO BEAVS!

  1. Anyone else fee like we are slowly starting to offer lower ranked players for 2019 class (my first D1 offer!) and maybe showing signs of feeling out of the fight for the higher ranked guys? I know coaches can read prospects better than I so maybe I need to wait and see how they develop their recruits.

    • Are you talking about baseball? If you are I would say that the staff offers kids that they think think can contribute. They balance ranked vs drafted eg mags and genier.

      • Sorry I should have added football in my post. I like the baseball recruiting strategy. Getting guys that won’t leave in the draft right away.

    • It’s why I would love for Miller to stay. He’s just that bad as a coach.

Zony fan will have a lot of fun in the future when they figure out who was coaching Buffalo last year and likely gave them a complete scouting report for this game.

  2. Lady Beavs 11.5 favs today, Ducks 38 point favs.

Went 11-4-1 yesterday against the spread yesterday–who needs PERS?

13 out of 16 in the AB pool

    Today: regress to the mean….

      • OSU wbb should win this game, on paper at least. They’ve played in a tougher conference and those games should be good preparation. That said, OSU is certainly fully capable of laying a big egg, and has had a tendency towards underperformance in some big games. This looks to be a 50-50 game to me. If they get by WK, I don’t see much success against UT on their home floor. I read Tenn is 56-0 in tournament games on their home floor. OSU doesn’t have enough on the O side of the ball to advance far this year. Gulich can carry them but only so far–reminds me of the Wiese team last year in that regard.

  3. Lady Beavs up by 18 at halftime. Just think they would be up 40 if they did not have any Christians on the team. Ask Jack he’ll tell ya.

  4. Final: 82-58 Beavs. Owned the boards vs 11 seed.

Scott picks up a T but no word on suspension or reprimand. What is it with these guys from George Fox? LOL, I’d take a couple more of them!

Big test likely in about 48 hours, time for Sunday’s game yet to be determimed.

  5. Scott’s crew with a blow away win. Too bad Slocum not playing on this years team. Gulich is really good. The Big Kielbasa looks and plays like a spastic female Mark Eaton. Huge drop off next year at the five position. Hope Scott can snag a grad transfer 4/5 position for next season. Brown would have really added to this years squad.

    • He’s had success molding uncoordinated bigs into stalwart 5s, so I wouldn’t worry too much about Grymek’s future. Next year won’t be her best, but she’ll start to show her strengths and improvement in her weaknesses. By the time she’s a senior, she’ll be a double-double who affects the game on D.

She’ll be better if she extends her game to 15 feet… with nobody contesting her shot. She is possibly the worst FT shooter I’ve ever seen. Nowhere to go but up in that phase.

    • Gulich has really developed her game, making a variety of shots and runs the floor the entire game. She didn’t get much rest today, she’ll get less on Sunday.

I thought Corosdale had one of her best games today.

Lots of talk about the journals Scott is using; somewhere an investigation is underway regarding his Dollar Store visit!

      • Even though Gulich didn’t get on the floor a lot as a freshman, you could see her co-ordination and athleticism then, so that’s been present from the get-go. Not so with Grymek, and I wonder about the two tall gals coming in. We’ll just have to see there I guess. As pointed out above, likely a huge drop off next season at the 5. But maybe one of the newcomers is the next Ruth Hebard…

        • She is really tall, but really that is it. If she could be coached by this staff for four years she might turn into something. Unfortunately she is only around for two years. If Scott can turn her into a serviceable player by next year, he is really is a great coach…..

  6. Hey thanks for putting the thread up. Just came by to do that and see it was already done. Best assistants in the Pac-12 blog-o-sphere!

  7. Holy crap, Texas Southern just went on a 16-0 run against Xavier, with a sweet corner three by Derrick Bruce. I don’t think it’s going to last, but hey ex-Beaver guards are 2-0 in the tourney so far with Nevada’s win earlier, that’s a helluva lot better than the P-12

Edit- it didn’t last Xavier then went on their own 16-0 run.

          • Slim to none. They have two very good guards and another good frosh guard. The got nuttin’ inside and play no D. They run up and down and jack up threes. Think Loyola Marymount back in the day.
The bigs for the Ducks will score at will.

  8. Preston Jones dh today gets an infield single to lead off the t2, his hamstring must really be 100%.
Second inning the Beavs have leadoff on base……..didn’t result in a score in the first.
0-0 tie early, Cal pitcher throwing lots of balls, need to take advantage before he reaches his stride.

    • 5 LOB in 3 innings (would have been 6 if not for Larnach being picked off) I’d say right now is time to complain. Gotta hope another thing similar to last year will be the good fortune Beavs often had in the seventh inning.
1-0 Beavs on to the b3

  9. Softball beat up on #16 CAL today 10-5. Relaxed fan friendly environment in Corvallis. Our girls are good and they’ll break the top 25 soon. Two more games this weekend to make a case. Laura Berg is doing some good things with the program.

  10. Zak Taylor pull back from bunt to smack a single. You sure Casey isn’t in the dugout?

ADD: and then Grenier squeezes home a run and is safe at first, yup, Casey is there!

  11. Middle of the 4th, 4-0 Beavs.
Cal pitcher has given up 5BB’s and thrown 77 pitches in 4 innings. Many stressful pitches with runners on base. Tough kid but there is a limit.
Beavs LOB? SEVEN in 4 innings!

  12. Cal pitcher strikes out the side in the t5, he is hitting his stride-at 88 pitches. Feels like momentum favors the Bears now, however, the Cal BP is supposed to be a possible weak link.
4-2 going to the b5….top of the order due up for Bears.

  13. Broken record here….keep seeing Beav batters getting easy outs against a struggling pitcher — lots of 1 -pitch and 2-pitch outs, making it easy on Cal.

  14. Pierce in for the b8, good move with Luke at 101 but Nate better not wait to long to go to Mulholland if Pierce isn’t strong. Important to get the W to start the series against bears best pitcher.

  15. Does anybody else want Parker to just stop talking for more than a few seconds? I swear, it’s like having that fan in the stands behind you who won’t shut the F up the entire game. Just give me the basic info, tell a few stories if you need to, but also let the game’s ambience tell the story from time to time. Is that too much to ask?

  16. One run lead going to the t9 and another Cal arm. If the BP is a weak link for the Bears then now is the time to take advantage; 1 run doesn’t feel like it will hold up.

    • Nice, good to get that 1st Pac12 win. This Beavs team still feels like it’s in a bit of a funk ever since Surprise. Doing just enough to get the wins, but not making it easy on themselves. Hopefully getting Nick back will give them the extra punch they need to put teams away early and not have the closers put into tight spots

  17. Jake to the rescue with Vaughn on deck and runner on first….struck him out and game over! Whew, but 11 men LOB…yikes! Nick, we need you back SOON!

    • them beavers called it above; 2 E’s by the Bears were the difference. Seemed the Beavs were destined to throw this one away, Adley did lay down a nice bunt but will need to contribute more to the O tomorrow.
Will be interesting to see how Cal pitching performs, OTOH, can’t afford for Fehmel to have an off day tomorrow.

      • Stallings is well-known as a borderline verbally abusive coach in practices. His foul mouth on the sideline is suspected to be only the tip of the iceberg. He got a pass from a culture who would justify it as discipline and/or gruffness so long as he was winning. When that started to slide, the curtain blocking his true character slid with it.

I don’t blame kids who want to get away from that. They’re supposed to have a positive experience which will teach them to be healthy citizens and leaders in the community. When you end up with Woody Hayes or Lavonda Wagner as your coach, contrary to the manner you saw during recruiting, you’re stuck as a student-athlete. You have no power to do anything without losing a year of your life and maybe your reputation in the process. And that’s if you even have a proper culture within which you can feel safe speaking out against a coach being abusive.

We saw it play out slowly at OSU. Student athletes just don’t get the benefit of the doubt. Even your response belittles their decision as a team, the one thing they have done as a team this season. It’s not a surprise that the missing variable when they act as a team is Stallings.

So… yes, Barnes screwed Pitt hoops. It’s not as if he couldn’t use the google to find out what Stallings is all about. He also could have used the google to figure out if the head of the search firm he was hiring had deep-pocket connections in Nashville who might have wanted Stallings to just be gone. It could be Barnes was just the idiot who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The next school who was going to hire that search firm to find a new hoops coach at a substantial level was going to end up hiring Kevin Stallings. Barnes was just the dummy who was next in line. He had no reason to think his former mentor wasn’t playing above board… I mean… unless he would have used the google.

        • Just read the article.

Vandy players spoke the same way about Stallings. In fact, I spoke with someone years ago who couldn’t process the loyalty of the players after witnessing some incidents personally. This is a friend who is a Vandy alum, and he himself defended Stallings (until he didn’t) despite what he had seen and heard. I don’t know what it is about Stallings, but he gets loyalty. I guess I’ll never understand that sort of manipulation fully.

          • Sounds like some sort of Stockholm Syndrome. Didn’t Stallings get a top notch player out of Oregon a few years back or am I think of something else?

          • He had Tinsley out of Oregon City.

He also beat out CR for Dai-Jon Parker, who played minimal minutes when Tinsley was a senior… then got suspended for breaking a Stallings rule… then trudged on another year before finally transferring because (as Stallings put it while taking the blame for all the suspensions and transfers) he was the wrong kind of person to try to live up to the standards of being a Vandy hoopster.

Parker’s life ended a year later in a tubing accident/drowning.

I don’t have much respect for Stallings as a person, but I’m sure many of his former players would say otherwise.

  18. Haven’t been on in a while.

Can anyone explain why the beavs got a 6 seed? I mean they are essentially ranked ahead of a bunch of 4 and 5 seeds. Not to mention drawing what looks like one of the hardest regions. Not exactly ideal to get Tenn then Baylor. It’s like they feel we are the #24 team instead of top 15.

    • Rankings don’t impact where teams are seeded. The committee looks at a variety of factors including RPI, which had the Beavs 42nd. It’s definitely not a perfect or always fair system.

      • I get that rankings are everything but was there a consensus that points towards this being a bad seed for us? Seems like we should have been seeded higher. In the men’s tournament sometimes they use rpi, sometimes last 12 wins, sometimes BPI, etc.

        • I think they’ve always been playing catch-up with their RPI and SOS ever since beginning of conference. Their RPI after the non-conference was in the 130-140 range with low strength of schedule. Their two preconference marquee games against Notre Dame and Duke were both losses. The RPI improved through the conference but never really matched up with their AP ranking.

    • Seems to me that the failure to win even one game in the PAC Tourney had an impact on seeding. The current status of the nike program down south virtually guaranteed OSU would not host (that airport can only handle so much traffic!).

As for rankings, it is worth noting that the latest AP poll has Tenn at #12 and the Beavs at #13; while the latest USA Today Coaches poll has it the other way round, with the Beavs #12 and Lady Vols #13.

Sundays game (11am Pacific – ESPN2?) should be worth watching. A real test of everyone involved; the need to avoid overconfidence and to withstand setbacks cannot be over stressed. Ron Callan mentioned that the center for Tenn looked, how did he put it, lethargic in comparison to Marie. But, who doesn’t, with the way she has been hustling?

Pressure on Beavs ball handlers likely to, again, be key. Against #11 seed WKY the points off of TO’s was even, still, Beavs had 4 more TO’s than the Lady Toppers (12-8).

Three point success, TO’s, Control the Boards? What am I missing?

      • I’d like the Beavs chances more if they were on a neutral court, but UT is going to be a tough out on their home floor. Key is —as usual— limit the TO’s (say no more than 12 or so) and the guards have to show up on offense and shoulder some of the scoring load. So they have to hit shots and not disappear as Tudor can do from time to time, as an example. Marie has to stay in the game, so no foul trouble. I expect UT to press and be better at it than WK was. I will be happy to be wrong but I have to think UT wins this one, but a competitive game.

  19. I had my antennae up for any further Heimlich backlash with him pitching the P-12 opener, but it seemed pretty quiet to me. I was impressed by the strong response from the masses against those in the media who predictably went for the click bait at the beginning of the season. I think it caught them off guard. I’m hoping it’s done and they won’t try again, but I think that tournament time might present one last opportunity for “fake outrage”.

    • There are just much bigger stories out there than this one. And I don’t think the story can go any further. No more hidden facts or people.

It’ll surely come up again in the postseason but won’t result in any backlash.

      • Not much more anyone can wring out of it unless ex sister-in-law decides to give a press conference or it’s revealed who tipped off Danny M or if someone sues the Corvallis police department (my choice) for improper procedure. I believe Moran and the rest of the Oregonian staff honestly thought people would be grateful to them for outing such a dangerous person. As much as I hate the ucks, I noticed in Canzano’s latest diatribe on the subject, duck fans also commented to leave it alone.

  20. Last year was amazing. I would be shocked for them to repeat that record. But I would love to see their best baseball by the end of the season rather than now. I love the way this team does do enough to win even while grinding.

  21. I wait the whole session to watch Dhesi wrestle in the 3rd place match, and they show the 7th place match instead. Give me a break.

Dhesi (3rd) and Bresser (7th) end up All-Americans in their weight classes.

    • Not a lot of talk on here about wrestling. 2 all- Americans are great but does it seem to you, or anyone else, that the program has regressed some over the last few years?

        • What I’m thinking. I know they lost out on that kid from Marshfield high. I believe he is going Michigan and is the 2nd ranked wrestler in the country at his weight. 4 time state champ. Used to be a time that those kids never left. Perhaps just a cyclical thing for the program.

      • We’re a perennially good team in a mid-major. Slippage is just a comparative reality for us. Until the Pac schools invest in being competitive on a national level, they won’t compete with the B1G. Recruits have known this for decades. The ACC is only now putting together a good core group to challenge the B1G. NCSt. finished well with a bunch of young athletes. They will be great to elite in the next few years.

ASU consistently finds champions, albeit seemingly one at a time. Fresno is making a comeback. Boise is decent. But we’re just stuck in mediocrity until we address the same things that we lack the vision to address as an institution and fandom. Zalesky is a fine coach. But I would liken him to being to Gable what Siefert was to Walsh. And we’re Carolina.

We at OSU are comfortable with the comfortable. Until we take the lead and force our mid-major conference out of the malaise we lead, we’ll not see success on a competitive level with the B1G.

  22. Nice to see Zak Taylor make the throw to Adley to get the third out in the b2. Doesn’t matter that it was primarily poor baserunning.

  23. Seems no one but Kwan wanted to force this guy to pitch in the sixth, he (Cal pitcher) is at 106 after 6 innings; won’t be around to (try to) beat up much longer.

LOB so far: Cal 1, Beavs 8

  24. Adley has 2 hits, a BB, and two big RBI’s so far………as hoped for after yesterdays game he makes a difference on offense today.

  25. Unglued now? “Staggering to the human imagination”…Parker on the call at first where Jones should have been called safe.

    • I still don’t think he went unglued I mean unglued would be him still talking about it past the inning or him using other choice words hyperbole maybe but not unglued

  26. Maybe that rumor of weakness in the Cal bullpen was true?

In any event, Parker is now off the ledge! Larnach, Adley, Jones back to back to back doubles will do that.

  27. Parker chuckles as a Greg Street strike is called on Jones; what a difference several runs make!
10-4 good guys, on to the b9, tail end of Bears order due up.

  28. Abel gets the win after going 1 inning giving up 1 hit and 2 BB’s.
Beavs take the series with a 10-4 victory.

Happy birthday to Pat, a win as a present and still plenty to work on as well.

  29. This game did not have to be as hard as it was there were so many times this team got men on base with no outs and could not bring them home. But hey they took the weekend and that is all that counts

  30. Heh, heh, in Phoenix the Sun Devils leadoff batter comes up with an inside the park HR to make it 13-0 against u of nike in the 5th inning. Wonder what kind of shoes he wore?

  31. WBB: 11am sunday, TV info from OSU: “ESPN2 will have regional coverage, or you can watch online via Watch ESPN!”

GT has a piece on the Oregonians who chose to play for Lady Vols.

“Rueck was asked if he was frustrated those player chose to go elsewhere.
“Well, if that’s not their dream then you don’t want that,” he said. “Whatever their dream is, go fulfill whatever it is you want to do. If it’s not you, we’ll find someone else. That’s what every college coach does and that’s recruiting in general.
“This is my 22nd year doing this, I learned a long time ago to not sweat a recruit. If you don’t get somebody, it’s OK. There’s somebody else. There’s a reason for everything.
“Like I said, I’m happy for them. Find that niche for you and if it’s here that’s great. If it’s there that’s fine too.
”It wasn’t really a surprise because they had so many opportunities, and we hadn’t won,” he said Saturday. “We had all of them on campus numerous times so we got to know them really well.

Westbrook says, ““I played with a lot of them, so I know how they function on the court and off the court,” she said. “I kind of know what to expect from them, but it’s good to watch film to know what they have improved on and what other things they do. We’re going to watch film (Saturday) and catch up on everything and be all on the same page (Sunday).”

    • Yeah… blah blah blah.

The selection committee fucked up… and Zony layed an egg, so we must fire Larry Scott.

      Whatever.

I don’t think people know what a conference commissioner does. We should fire all mascots for this poor performance.

      That’ll show them… whoever them is… are… is.

      • So you think he’s a good commissioner? Yeah, he’s gotten the conference some great television exposure over the past few years with all of the late game starts in football. And, all of this so-called t.v. revenue was supposed to “level the playing field” right? According to what I’ve read, that revenue has not fully been realized and the conference’s national exposure for football and basketball has declined…the proof is in the pudding and right now, the pudding is pretty sour.

        • TV revenue has not been realized because of two main things:
          1. The Pac produces and owns its own content. This was known going in, and it was a wise move.
          2. The DirecTV deal that was agreed upon got submarined by ATT when they bought DTV. ATT happens to be run by some major dickheads with such a narrow vision of the future that they can only buy other companies for their customers (and their info, apparently) and squeeze the souls out of what were once well-founded businesses.

If we want better start times, we can forgo even more revenue. The East Coast Bias that doesn’t exist dictates start times. Those Friday games were out of Scott’s hands. ESPN proposed the deal, and Scott simply surveyed Pac ADs to confirm or deny it.

          • But let’s get back to how teams that he doesn’t coach are his responsibility when they lose but not when they win. That is an intriguing foundation for a rant.

  32. My cousin held ASU to 2 runs in 7 innings last night at ASU. Tonight, ASU led Oregon 18-0 after 7 innings. I thought it was a typo. That’s nuts. Looking forward to our Saturday/Sunday matchups with UofO

      • He had several offers as a junior(Both Washingtons, Both Arizonas, OleMiss and Miss State, more) but then had to have TJ surgery and miss his senior year. He had wanted OSU since around when he was an 8th grader. When OSU finally had him in for a visit during his senior year, they never offered and it sounds like OSU coaches kindof gave their family the cold shoulder during the visit. They came away pretty much feeling like OSU wasted their time by even having them visit.
UofO was one of the schools that stuck with him through TJ surgery and they were close to home, plus they were impressed by the facilities and all that stuff, so he chose to go there. This year his fastball is around 97-98mph and he’s projecting to go in the top 2-3 rounds of the draft last I checked(possibly first round if the next few months go well) It’s been kindof unreal how he’s already interviewing with most of the MLB teams in his down time.
If anybody here belongs to Baseball America or D1Baseball and is willing to share, I’d be curious to see where they currently rank him.

        http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2018/01/16/2018-cbd-top-100-countdown-24-matt-mercer-oregon/

        • Perhaps they found out about your angrybeavs connection and hence the cold shoulder?
That’s too bad to hear, particularly since our Jr. pitching class is kind of weak.

          • I think the TJ scared OSU off. We had something like 2-3 guys on our roster at the time going through their injury issues so maybe OSU didnt want the risk?
It didnt affect his pitching too much but missing his senior season limited his chances to show colleges what he could do.
On the plus side, I get free tix to most of his games so I’m taking in some road games this year and checking out a few stadiums I wouldn’t normally get a chance to see.
PK Park is actually a really nice venue to catch a game in, especially since the stands are so open, you can sit pretty much anywhere and nobody checks your tickets. They also allow you to bring any bag into the game and it can be filled with food/snacks, no questions asked.

          • Does Jesus still go to Ducks home games? It was probably two or three seasons ago, but I’ll never forget that dude with the long hair and beard, dressed in white sitting placidly behind home plate. I think it was a misty, rainy game which added to the weirdness/mystic.

  33. Today’s WBB game:
    Tennessee RPI #8. SOS #9
Oregon State RPI #42. SOS #85

Hope the gals/Rueck can play big today and pull off a major upset of a team that is 57-0 at home in NCAA tournament games. But, it’s a long shot, Tennessee by 6.

  34. Third quarter has been gold for the Beavs very, very often. Rueck will have to do his halftime magic today for sure; he is up against a coach who’ll make adjustments and fire up her team as well.
Grymk got some minutes, surprised LadyVols didn’t take more advantage. Marie could have a blowout second half if refs allow, she shouldn’t have any fatigue issues.

  35. Pretty impressive they were able to erase the deficit. Tenn 3 at halftime buzzer gives them 2 pt lead. Gulich with 3 fouls which limited her minutes in the 2nd quarter.
2nd half will be a battle. Hopefully Beavs can keep their cool.

    • Their PG got crushed by Gulich on a nice pick and roll, but it looked clean on replay. There’s been alot of contact allowed in this game on both sides. Seems to be pretty fair in that regard but Tennessee seems to be able to take more advantage from that with their more physical/bigger players

  36. Beavs have been fortunate on a couple of calls. Still up 6.
Refs not calling much of anything today, but then Westbrook gets a suspect hand check foul on McWilliams.

  37. Gulich with 4 fouls, but Beav jumpers are falling late. Up 12 now with a little over 3 minutes to go. I’m amazed at how much contact goes uncalled on both sides. More physical than a men’s game

  38. Why is it that players always seem to shoot better when they are behind in that 5 to 10 point range late in games? Is it better concentration? Fear of their head coach? And like clockwork the team that’s ahead always seems to have a needless foul when the goal is to keep the clock running?

  39. So much for my forecast of UT by 6. Lol, happy to be wrong. Nice grind out win for the Beavs, and the first defeat for UT in 58 NCAA tourney home games. Sweet!

  40. Proud of our women! Got down early, fought back. When Vols looked to close the gap in the 4th, beavs answered every time. Clutch performance in a hostile environment.
People were saying beavs got a tough draw getting sent to Knoxville where the Vols were 57-0 in the tournament, but it looks like the Vols ended up with the tough draw :)

    • Who the fuck is this “secret Quack” who down voted your comment? Fuck the Vols too, didn’t they make Saturns in Tennesee?

      • Somebody not bright enough to realize that Gulich is the S class I’m referring to?
Angry has wanted to deploy her airbags for several years!

  41. I sure I’m bias, but the Portland/Oregon media seem to be shitting themselves over the WBB Ducks success this season and I don’t recall quite the same over the top enthusiasm for the Beavs. I like that this historic win gets the Beavs a little more notice. God help us if the Quacks win it all.

    • Hope for a Golden upset tonight in Eugene. Gophs PG is really good and should give Sabrina some trouble guarding her. She is a lot like Canada from UCLA. They don’t play any D so it should be a track meet.

    • Ladies dominated the second half after a tough first quarter. Led the entire fourth quarter. Tenn scored a few last min baskets to make the score look closer when the outcome was already decided.

      • What he said. At the beginning it looked like they were going to get killed. Your GF had two fouls at the end of the 1st, so only played half of the first half. Tudor could not hit the broadside of a barn, Pivec had a bunch of TO’s, and yet they won going away. Good stuff.

      • Nice, thanks. Should be able to catch the next game. Missed the first two.
Gulich is a much better all around player than Hamblin.

  42. Great day for Oregon State. WBB beats Tennessee, Softball beat CAL again to take 2 of 3, and baseball sweeps CAL. Nice…

    • Cherry on top is that the Quacks MBB got run out of the NIT by Marquette, so I don’t have to hear any Madison Square Garden hype from the Portland media, now if Minny can upset the women it will be a perfect sports day!

    • And, the icing on the cake….Ducks mens lose at home in NIT….freaking hilarious especially after reading many Duck fans comments about how they had an easy road to the NIT Championship Game and how that would bring additional recognition to the program. Those fans are just totally RiDuckulous and UnBeaverable!

Go Lady Beavs and Beavs baseball team!

        • Oregonlive….although there are some hacks articles I won’t read…..canzano and Moran. It’s not tedious at all as the duck homers are out in full force that is until the ducks lose a few games or so.

  43. Beside family and the band I may have been the only OSU fan in the building. Very physical game, game changed in second quarter when beavs went to zone, and vols couldn’t hit a outside shot and setup pressure.

Great fans, great building, great result go beavs.

  44. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7aeLq57qlQ

I don’t usually watch post-game stuff. I thought I would tune in to hear what Warlick said, expecting a few kudos for the Beavs. Based upon a question about “new teams” emerging in the wbb picture, she did manage to regurgitate that she thought Scott did a great job. But, that was all. I think of postgames with Rueck – win or lose – always acknowledges the other team. This coach was a mess.

  45. Apparently Lady Vols had a 23 point lead on Notre Dame this season and LOST. Which is more amazing? Having a 23 point lead on ND, or blowing a 23 point lead?

  46. Wow I can’t believe the lady Beavs won without a team full of atheist lezbos. Kudos to Jack for knowing everything about everything.

      • Well, you asked the question….Yes they are incompatible, however, Jesus walked among the sinners of his era and sought them out out of love and not condemnation….remember that he said, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”…according to the bible, God hates the sin but not the sinner. That’s my message for the day, love thy neighbor unless they’re a Duck fan.

        • Man lying with man as he would a woman is incompatible with those Christians who rely on the faulty transliteration of the two verses which mention it. The correct transliteration is pederasty, not male homosexuality.

There’s also no mention of female homosexuality. So the bias against them has to be created outside anything having to do with Christianity.

If you want to read a bible which most correctly translates the OT, you need to start with the Septuagint. Many current versions of the bible don’t even make the Masoretic Text canonical, let alone the Septuagint. So I fully understand where many people who call themselves Christian and can quote scripture at will become confused by the gaps left by their versions of scripture. For starters, the NT’s references to prophecy make little sense without it. Almost 90% refer directly to the Septuagint.

And once you get into that kind of study, you learn all about what it means to have a Nazarene speak truth to the power of the hasidim, going so far as to vandalize their temple scam, thus giving the Pharisees justification to arrest and convict the Nazarene. And they still had to argue with their prefect in order to get the charges to stick.

Knowing the actual history and demographics of the region gives color to an otherwise strange book which clearly borrows from several previous cultures for its mythology.

    • Why continue your lazy lying, putz?

      Character?

Your weak-ass faith is funny to watch as it writhes in your lies.Your version of God must be a fraidy cat with a lying wuss for his spawn. There can’t be another explanation for your lazy attempted narrative which fills the void left by your incomprehension of the written word… that, and you’re made in his image and all that.

I get it. That void which you don’t know exists (because it’s simply your obstinate ignorance) can be bridged by faith rather than actually understanding the conversation that took place. I know words are hard for you to understand… and that you just can’t understand them. This is clear because those I wrote… which did nothing to you… on a blog.. are somehow twisted into the really poor narrative you made up to pretend to defend your wimpy faith-like faith in this really butthurt manifestation of lies.

We all do what we can, I guess. Go be scared by your other boogeymen now. I’m sure you have many.

      • Of course, your lies are so weak and ridiculous that your posts could just be me making up some really stupid weasel of a character in order to use the idea of it all as a punching bag.

So there’s that to think about as well.

          • Oh… you think that me finishing the fight you of the singular dumb mind pick is me being butthurt and all.

            Nah.

This is what I do. I can roll off tomes parsing your every word for sport… when you choose to pick dumb fights. To be fair, I can write tomes on many things intelligent as well. But you all choose the dumb and fearfully dumb a preponderance of the time.

            So that’s your mirror.

            Or maybe that’s my mirror.

  47. WBB win so good for the program…Gulich only senior this year, and she’ll be missed, but the younger players on the roster are going to benefit from today’s win and keep the program strong.

As I said a few weeks back with Gulich peaking late in the season, this is a dangerous team that others may not want to face this time of year.

    • Gulich will be missed for her leadership as much as anything. Next year will give us all a look at Rueck’s ability to adapt his system to the players on hand. It’s hard to doubt the guy, latest example is replacing Gabby with a more team oriented D and utilizing Marie as an offensive force whereas Ruth was more focused on defense and blocking shots.

Pivec caught some barbs from fans because of her TO’s and inconsistent 3pt shooting. She should be given credit for her rebounding and grit. I expect her to have a great year next season with Slocum on the floor to take over a lot of the ball handling.

Callan noted on radio that the first foul on Marie was called by the same ref who recently hit Rueck with a T. Next game I’ll be watching Rueck, he won’t back down in sticking up for his players.

      • Playing time for some players is going to be sparse next year unless rueck decides to open up the rotation. Or he could redshirt a couple which would be smart.

Kalmers has played well. Would be a starter at other d1 programs.
Washington is one of those players who will get her time eventually. Maybe next year depending on how the new bigs transition.
        Thropay – candidate to redshirt
        Aquino – day 1 starter
Morris – backup but could redshirt too.
        Simmons – redshirt

With 13 on the roster next year, rueck rarely goes deep into his bench so it makes sense for 3 to redshirt.

        • Washington is one of those players whose emotions need to be better controlled, right now she is a threat to commit a foul every time she sees the floor. I don’t know if there is enough time for coaching to correct that.
She’s got talent, for sure, but playing time will depend on more than just the transition of the new bigs (certainly a big factor); it’ll depend on her own development as well.

  48. Baseball has a pretty nice schedule ahead of itself the next few weeks. UW is probably the most difficult series in the next month, and they are at Goss next week. After that, Utah and Nevada are terrible. Arizona has been weaker than they typically are. Then the Missouri State series on the rode in mid April will be the next test.
Great opportunity to keep stringing together some wins.

    • Nice to see the PAC 12 doing well in baseball. Stanford could reasonably be argued as the top team in the conf right now.

Beavs up to #4 in rpi following the Cal sweep.

Uw is a bit overrated. While sweeping AZ, the rest of their schedule is pretty underwhelming.

    • and then this weekend happened…looking pretty smart with my North Carolina and Michigan State final.

Had a great point spread result (Thurs/Fri)…19-9-1

  49. I know it’s not a popular view around OSU athletics, but did anybody else think our WBB team benefitted quite a bit yesterday from the officiating?
They really let alot of shoving go uncalled on picks, but then I saw Westbrook get called for some really ticky tack touch fouls on our guards. I’m not complaining, it just seemed like the scales were tipped in our favor for much of the 2nd half, which helped keep Gulich in the game till the end. If she fouls out in the fourth, I could see Tennessee winning.
Credit to our team for taking advantage of the opportunity. Just surprised Gulich was allowed to give a couple of two arm shoves during those picks.

  50. I was at The game and the issue UT fans had with the screens was OSU players not being set, didn’t hear a word about shoving while screening.

I’m not sure if it was shown on TV but Gulich was hit/pushed/fell to the ground 4or 5 times throughout the game. Russel was incredible physical and easily could of been call multiple time for fouls. One of the fouls called on Gulich, Russel fell to the ground in the open court appear to be a fantom foul, live it looked like she just fell to the ground.

Yes a couple of the hand checking fouls on UT were incrediblily Ticky-tacky but made up for the other fouls not called earlier. UT guard were very aggressive all game.

    • You’ve pretty much described how I saw it on TV. Only one or two of the “Gulich to the ground” plays were shown of the 4-5 you mentioned.
Late in the game TV had a good shot (no replay that I recall) of a Ticky-Tack foul on UT for hand checking.

TV also showed the “Pivec flung to the ground” non-call; as pointed out by homefry just below.

Gotta mention regarding Nicebeaver’s feeling that If she (Gulich) fouls out in the fourth, I could see Tennessee winning. I, too, could see UT winning but find it reassuring that when Gulich WAS out earlier in the game, the good gals did pretty well.

Appreciated your prior comments about the sparse representation of Beaver Nation in the stands. Listening to Ron Callan’s broadcast, I had the impression there were more than just family of players. Was thinking maybe 100 or so unrelated Beav fans.

      • The oh crap moment I had was about mid way through the 4th when we had a few chance to extend the lead but could convert and UT cut the lead to 5 or 7, but then Corosdale hit a big 3 and from that moment the arena knew it was over.
