The Cal Bears are the last difficult team on the Beavers schedule. Of course, I can write that and we all can know it, but the Beavers can't believe it. The past two games, we saw what happens when they disrespect the opponent and go through the motions.

No official word yet, but below are the matchups I'm thinking:

Date Opponent Pitchers Time
05/06 California Sam Gaviglio (8-1, 2.00) vs Erik Johnson (5-1) 5:35 p.m.
05/07 California Josh Osich (6-1, 2.77) vs Justin Jones (6-3) 1:05 p.m.
05/08 California James Nygren (7-2, 3.61) vs Kevin Miller (5-2, 2.11) 1:05 p.m.

Osich is now 3-1 with a 2.78 in conference play. He's proving me wrong. Perhaps rediscovering his curveball will make all the difference. It's hard to win with just two pitches. Until I see consistency from him, I'll continue to believe our season ends with Josh on the mound. That can change over the next few weeks, so I'm writing it in pencil, not pen.

With Osich settling in, the focus now shifts to Sam Gaviglio and the team as a whole. Gaviglio has given up 5 runs in each of his last two outings, versus weak offensive clubs in WSU and UCLA no less. You have to wonder if he's wearing down due to heavy usage (i.e. high pitch counts) early in the year. Hopefully it's just the natural ebb and flow of a baseball season, and he gets back on track this weekend.

The team as a whole has been lackluster. I don't sense any entitlement. I think what happened is this: the Beavs were dissed in the polls early on, so they wanted to prove everyone wrong. Now that they have, they're probably thinking "where do we go from here?"

That's the feeling I get. It just seems like they're flat, and this makes sense: it's hard to stay emotionally high once you attain a goal (i.e. #3 in the nation, respect, etc). It will be interesting to see if they can get over the hump of getting over the hump, so to speak. They must find a new voice from within now that they've silenced all critics.

  1. To me they just complacent and too overconfident. That loss to Oregon I think brings them back down to earth. To me it was complacency because against WAZZU and UCLA the last two weekends they played decently in the first two games and went through the motions the last game of the series. They got too satisfied with winning the series. Now I believe Pat Casey has gotten on their case and the embarrassment will have them focused. I expect them to win the first two games and have Wetzler on the mound for the sweep. I think everyone knows how I feel about that.

I say they win 2/3 and possibly sweep if Wetzler actually pitches well, that is pretty doubtful though.

A sweep would be big though. They would extend the lead on ASU to two full games. That would be tough for the Sun Devils to overcome, especially with the Beavers schedule the rest of the way.

    • I went to the Oregon game and you could tell just by watching warm-ups that the Ducks were there to play and the Beavs were just going through the motions. I hope they got it out of their system ala the Arizona loss and come back with a vengeance. Also hoping Gaviglio returns to form, we’re not going to win many Friday night games giving up 5 runs.

      • Yeah I saw the same in that game. I think they will bounce back quite well. Sam I think just was going through some struggles that happen during the year. His last two starts he just seemed to have two bad innings and the rest were alright. I think he has like a 8 innings two run performance vs California and gets back to what he was doing.

Hopefully Carter and Danny get back in the lineup. They’re needed. Carter had been swinging the bat well and had the big hit to bring them back against Gerrit Cole. Also, Carter’s defense is tremendous and is the best defender in the infield.

I’d like to see Pat Casey not mess with the batting order anymore. Guys should hit where they are comfortable. I would give Garrett Nash a start in the lead-off spot tomorrow but play everybody in about their normal spot in the order.

  2. Baseball is a grinding sport. It is a marathon of a season and not a sprint. It is incredibly hard to keep that focus and fire for a complete season. The key is how you respond when things go poorly. I think this series will tell a bunch about this team. They need to get back to basics and grind through this weekend.

  3. Yes, you are just not going to win every game. Other teams pitcher’s find a groove, hitter’s smack line drives right at fielders. Mental errors are what to watch out for from this team and how fast Casey can correct them..

  4. Agreed. If I’m not a seasoned Beaver fan (expecting that slide), I look at this schedule and think, “take two from Cal, and then go 8-1 the rest of the way. Given my OSU failure reinforment over the years, I’d have to go more with the concept of just winning 2 of 3 for each of the series.

They should try to look at those polls putting ASU ahead of them and strive for even more success…as they do lead ASU in league play (records are close all the way around), and swept them, yet ASU is deemed the better team according to the pollsters. Use it. Finish strong.

    • I believe they will be refocused and will get back on track and play well. The team just needed a wake up, IMO. They got it and will come out ready.

  5. Off topic,
I linked tape on John Ferguson of Denton (Tx) Guyer a couple days ago. I went back to watch it today, and I found a teammate of his who is pretty damn good. From the comments, it looks like Boise Institutional Lack of Control has him on their radar. Like Ferguson, he’s undersized for the position he plays, but he rips through blocks like butter.

    On topic,
I worry about Gaviglio in the early innings. He’s seemed unsteady when he takes the mound. The last couple outings have seen him bleed a run or two here and there until it gushes for five or so runs. I want to see him mow down the first couple innings like he was earlier in the season.

  6. Oh, and what’s Jake’s status? We could use the bat, but he’s our best glove in the infield as well. Watching Steve Sax and Chuck Knoblauch against the Ducks was a little scary.

  7. Sounds like they might not get the game in tonight. A doubleheader tomorrow would definitely change things. I wonder if both games would be televised though? My guess is no but I would like for them to broadcast both.

  8. But none of them compares to the homegrown talent in Aloha.
    http://highschoolsports.oregonlive.com/news/article/2993714278079012034/thomas-tyner-shows-off-his-speed-and-looks-forward-to-state-track-meet-video/

No offense to all you football fans out there, but I want Tyner for track and field. I want him to be a Beav first and an international superstar second. Or maybe he can do what he wants. But the point is that football is piddle when you have an extreme talent like Tyner has.

    • I am pretty excited about having a men’s and women’s track and field program.
The athletes who do track and football are fun to watch.

Should help us get more guys like Wheaton and Gwacham in the coming years.

I hope Tyner comes to OSU. Any rumors yet? He could be the guy to help rebuild the Oregon State track program back to prominence.

      • I have no idea where Tyner goes. I would say Nikegon is the choice for staying near home, since they have a track team and facilities that rival the best in the nation. But their sprinters leave a lot of time on the track. I can only guess that coaching does not measure up to the talent they sign. I know Ashton Eaton chose a decathlete’s life over strictly sprinting. But I think good coaching still cuts a lot of time off his 100m best.

  9. Sean-y, we hardly knew ye.
    http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-basketball/2011/5/7/2158996/sean-miller-maryland-basketball-coach

The Zonie boards have lit up in angst. Apparently Miller’s wife tweeted something to the effect of, “get me out of this god forsaken desert” last night. All reports have Greg Byrne making merit-based promises and breaking them while blowing his wad on football.

UA wants to be a football school? Fine.

Sean will take his ball and go home.

Everyone assumes Pastner is in at UA.

  10. Gaviglio lets a runner get on but gets a double play to get out of it. It will be important for him to keep the ball down and get ground balls.

  11. Gaviglio looks much better today than he has the last couple weeks. Early on it looks like he’s back to being the ace we’ve seen most of the year.

  12. Kavin Keyes is hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the second. Would be nice to see the Beavers execute here and get him across for an early lead.

  13. Saved the gas money and ate my tickets today. Had I realized what a cheap-ass outfit Root Sports is in not showing the game in HD I would have driven down and chanced the rain. Root Sports, what a f—-n’ disgrace!!

  14. Beavers lead 1-0 after four innings. Berberet had a a sac fly in the second inning. Beavers are still hitless though.

  15. Other than the fourth inning Sam has pitched really well. 9 strikeouts through 5 innings. Need to add on to this 1-0 lead and get a hit finally.

  16. Really sad seeing a team that literally can’t make contact on the ball. Seems like with two strikes the Beavers aren’t choking up on the bat so they can make contact. They have to put the ball in play. They aren’t doing that.

  17. Boyd gets the second out in the inning as the runner at third is tagged out after a rundown. Will Boyd get the Beavers out of yet another jam?

    • He does. Gets the batter to ground out. Boyd has bailed this team out of so many jams and does it again. Clutch pitcher for sure.

  18. The best thing about after this game is, We’ll have another game after this…so who will be the closer? Boyd?

    • I think they probably have Boyd close this out and save Tony Bryant for game two. The setup guy in game two probably is Cole Baylis.

  19. Boyd gets into trouble and gets himself out of it with a strikeout. 3-0 Beavers still. He probably closes this one out.

  20. Keyes nearly gets a ball into the right field seats but Oh leaps at the wall to grab the ball. Ball probably would have just hit off the wall if it wasn’t caught. He didn’t hit the ball as well as he could have. 3-0 Beavers going to the ninth.

  21. According to Angry, that kids sign would need to be confiscated because it has the “Angry Beaver” head on it. lol

    • I think the Angry Beaver logo got weaker when we redid the field and made it too ‘flat’. The right side needs to be a bit higher than the left to look stronger and more confident. Erickson did it right but they messed it up when they redid it unfortunately. Something as small as that could have been the difference in us breaking through to the Rose Bowl one of those years if you believe in the power of symbols combined with precise positioning.

  22. Barnes, other than the UCLA game last Sunday has really been struggling for a while. They need him to get going again.

  23. Osich is really pitching great. Hasn’t walked anybody through three which is always a good sign. When he doesn’t walk guys he’s hard to deal with.

  24. Osich is now leaving everything up in the zone and Cal is up 3-1. He had a good groove and then just lost it.

  25. Cal leads 3-1 after 4 1/2 innings. Osich needs to settle down after this and start getting the ball down.

  26. I wish Pat Casey would kindly ask Gorton to quit the team. One of the worst players I’ve ever seen. I would rather Max Gordon hit cleanup every night than watch Gorton play.

  27. that is a PATHETIC take me out to the ball game…grant it we’re behind, but that shouldn’t matter! It’s time to rally! The fans there are exactly why Reser stadium won’t be louder than it is until there is a young presence of those who like/want to yell. We bring some people to games who only yell when it’s a good/close game. When we’re down or way up, it gets really quiet.

  28. Home run by Carter Bell and it’s 4-2 Cal now. There is some life now. Hopefully they can string together more of a rally and make things a little more interesting.

  29. This team just isn’t having many good at-bats. That Sunday game against the Bruins may have started this. Since there has been a lot of weak at-bats and a lot of lazy defense.

  30. This is the exact Oregon game. Team just going through the motions again. Mentally they have a major issue. They just act like these games don’t matter.

    • I was at the 2nd game today and it was horrible. My sons Little League game this morning had fewer errors / passed balls. It is incredible the average age of people who attend games at Goss. BDC needs to do more to promote Beaver baseball to younger people. You see very few younger kids at these games and therefore lack of energy from the crowd. There is no reason with the Beavs in 1st place that these games shouldn’t be sold out. $20 for a ticket is on the high side given the economy, especially if you want to take a couple of kids to a game. If the games aren’t selling out then adjust the price down until they are sold out. Something they should consider going into next year.

      • I know. Every time they get panoramic on the crowd I cringe…every dude is a 60 year old hillbilly. Same with football when they’re not showing the student section. Where are the 25-35 year olds???

        • I would like to know where the younger people are as well. I cringe as well when they show the crowd. I don’t understand why more students don’t show up. Seems like the only students I see are the athletes! I will be at the Civil War series, hopefully me and my brother aren’t the only young people making the the trip to see them! I will be making noise though lol

          • I don’t understand why more students don’t show up either. And in general find it hard to believe they can’t figure out a way to get younger people out to the games. Plus, how damn hard can it be to sell out a 3,000 seat stadium when the team is in 1st place? The Corvallis Knights do a better job marketing than the Beavers do. The Knights are always promoting to get kids to the games.

          • You are mistaken is saying the students aren’t showing up. I am a student and I attended the first 2 WSU games and Tuesday’s Oregon game and for all three, student tickets were sold out. I do not know how many tickets are allotted for students but the student sections were packed for those games, unlike the sections behind homeplate and down the 3rd base line.

          • They need to add student sections on the 3rd base side also, this would help get a younger crowd dispersed throughout the stadium and get more students out to the games.

  31. I was out all day and missed these games.
From the sound of things, Gaviglio pitched well and Osich reverted to form. Correct?

    • Osich didn’t really regress, he just had a bad inning where he left the ball up in the zone but other than that he was good. The defense behind him and at catcher was just terrible. Gorton cost the team two runs behind the plate, Carter Bell and Parker Berberet combined to blow a double play that allowed them to score a run in the 8th. Cal got 3 runs that were truly earned and three that were strictly because of defensive mistakes. They didn’t even show up for game two. It’s all mental right now. No focus at all.

Jake Rodriguez will be starting tomorrow, so maybe that gives the team a boost. They’ve missed him and sounds like Andrew is really close to returning.

  32. Gorton was horrible. Hopefully we won’t be seeing him again for awhile. Don’t know what he was doing in there as catcher.

We better win this Series. Win tomorrow and we probably keep our #3 national ranking. Come on Beavs! Fight for it! Oregon State needs the good mojo.

  33. I didn’t like Gorton behind the plate at all. He wasn’t framing the pitches for an ump who liked them low. He wasn’t setting up for Osich to keep them down in the zone. And his defense was all over the map. I can understand Berberet getting a spell in a double header. But he obviously wasn’t doing it while standing at 1B… and not doing the greatest job there either.

And a seventh inning domination by Baylis and Booser?

    Not.

In other news, Sean Miller stays, and Zonie fans are relieved that it took the threat of their hoops coach leaving for Greg Byrne to keep his promises.

    • Gorton is terrible at everything. Can’t hit, pitch or play defense. Not sure why he should even sniff the field. They obviously miss Susac at the plate, but yesterday they missed him at catcher to spell Berberet. Sounds like Andrew will be back soon though. That will be big. Hopefully he won’t be rusty for too long at the plate.

  34. Couple random pregame thoughts:
I wish we never changed to field turf…I don’t think it’s helped salvage any rainouts, and it looks ugly (can’t stand the mismatched look of the infield/outfield).
ASU is playing better ball than we are right now…I can understand why some people have them ranked higher. I expect a drop in that Baseball America poll even if we do win. The level of play just isn’t where it was a few weeks ago.

  35. Max Gordon is starting today! Wow. Funny he doesn’t start until I mention him yesterday during the game on here. Jake Rodriguez is starting at second base and Wetzler is on the mound. Two of those three aren’t exactly the greatest of news but I love that Jake is getting the start today.

    • Ben’s not getting first pitch strikes. Disconcerting (as per usual). Got to say it’s nice he came back to get the first two outs, but you can’t do that all game long.

  36. 19 pitches for the first inning. That’s not good! At that rate of pitches he’ll last anywhere between the 5th and 6th inning…assuming he doesn’t give up any runs more than 1 or 2 in that time. We need to get our bats going.

And it was a 1-2 pitch (4th pitch of the inning).

  37. I think OSU needs to start getting aggressive on first pitches. The Cal pitcher has been consistently piping them right down the middle on 1st pitches. It’s probably the best pitch they will see during their at bats. (I know, most of you will say they need to be patient and wear down the pitcher…but they aren’t good enough hitters to handle the corner pitches, and they will probably end up taking too many called 3rd strikes).

  38. Good to see the Beavs getting after the pitcher early. That hasn’t been in evidence in the last six games. Hope they keep this up the rest of the season. When they play with a chip on their shoulder there’s no question they can get results.

  39. Great approaches at the plate by the Beavers right now. Sucks there will be a rain delay soon. They have some momentum.

  40. DANG! That’s not how Jake wants to do things on his first at bat being back, but it’s alright..he has 8 more innings to try once he’s up to bat again of course.

  41. Really bad decision by Jake Rodriguez on the 3-1 pitch. His swing is rusty at the plate, Cal pitcher struggling to throw strikes. Probably is ball four. He helped the pitcher get out of that inning.

  42. 3-1 Beavers after two innings. Stamps is really beginning to hit. He has the talent just needed to start making contact. If he can be consistent the offense can be so much more dangerous. Just as you saw in that last inning. He has great speed and his speed can be a killer to other teams.

  43. The ball is really carrying in Goss more than usual. That lost flyout I thought would be in shallow right and it was almost at the warning track.

    • That’s the second time this game Berberet has not delivered in an at bat. But I guess he really isn’t that great of a hitter (based on his avg), too bad, missed opportunities…

      • Parker is a decent hitter. He was hitting really well earlier this season. He has had some good swings as of late, but not today. His struggles in conference play have been mystifying. He’s a much better hitter than he’s been showing in Pac-10 play.

  44. Jake’s rust is pretty evident early. Just needs at-bats to knock the rust off. Berberet has to take the pitch in that 2-0 situation. He was way too aggressive. Could have drawn a walk later in the at-bat.

  45. Every time the Beavs have a chance to put this game away Cal comes up big and sticks around. I don’t like the feel of this one…hoping for rain/called game.

  46. Doesn’t look like the rain is going to last that long…it’s clearing to the west. But Parker says 20′ delay…guess it will take them that long to cover and uncover the field. Don’t think this one gets called though… this may not work in the Beavs favor.

    • Well I actually want this game to continue. Beavers got a shot to add onto their lead and I would like to see them do so.

  47. Kavin Keyes hits an RBI single and it’s 4-1 Beavers. The Beavers executed the fundamentals there perfectly. They need to do that much more.

  48. DeCarolis cares too much about trying to get a premium on tickets. Those seats behind homeplate should be full. No excuse. It should be about opening the gameday experience up for as many Beaver fans as possible. Reward people for being fans. Don’t try to rake them. You get more by having a full stadium, having more buzz, broadening support, and creating goodwill among your fanbase.

  49. Bryant has a weird throwing style for a pitcher. To me he looks like a catcher throwing pitches. He brings the ball up right behind his right ear during his release, vs. a bit more overhand motion you typically see.

  50. Bryant looks good so far.

I just would like to see DeCarolis have a better implementation of the supply/demand equilibrium.
The goal should be to be about 95% full for most games. It looks way better and if you get a few or more sellouts you aren’t really leaving money on the table. We have the facilities and need to be using them near capacity. Drop the prices by atleast 15% I would say.

  51. Beavers win 4-2. They take the series and lead ASU by a 1 game right now, which is more like two with having the tiebreaker. Big win.

    • Yeah it was a rough series but good result all thing considered. Great to see Stamps have a good day at the plate. When he can consistently get on base the Beavs are hard to beat. His defensive play in the outfield is exceptional. Great catch by Gordon too!

  52. So Susac will come back as a DH for a while. This might be an issue. It probably puts Jake Rodriguez back on the bench. You can’t take Keyes out of the lineup and you can’t take Carter Bell out of the lineup. No room to put Jake, I don’t think they leave out both Dunn and Tyler Smith. Interesting to see what Pat Casey does with his lineup next weekend.

    • I thought I heard Parker say Dunn was 0 for his last 18 and down to .250 on the year. If Rodriguez is truly healed, he’ll probably steal some of Dunn’s at bats. My guess is Tyler Smith will move to SS and Rodriguez will play 2B.

      • Rodriguez won’t be playing 2nd base. Kavin Keyes probably will. Keyes is better there than at third or ss. Rodriguez either plays at SS or doesn’t start. Although, he could start at 3B for Carter Bell to give Carter some extra rest because of his quad and fingers. My guess next weekend against UW if Susac plays is, Rodriguez makes 1 start at third and another at shortstop and doesn’t play in the other game. They can’t afford to take out Kavin so he will start all three games at 2B. When Andrew goes back to catching Jake will then be the full time starter at 2B again as Keyes will go back to being the DH.

        • I’ll take an O-fer Dunn at SS so long as Jake gets 2B and Bell gets 3B. That’s a very nice IF line-up. Keyes keeps the DH, and platoons in the field.

There’s no trading a good defense when you want your P’s to feel good about taking the mound. Just look at what the defense did for Wetzler today. He was locating pitches for once, but some balls were still hit pretty well… and taken away by some great fielding. When you have that behind you, your slider and curve move a little better than they normally do.

Compare that to what Osich had for a defense.

I think a 1-0 game shows more dominance than a blow-out. It takes discipline and teamwork to pull off a 1-0 game. The more it happens, the better I feel about our team.

          • And Jake is just such a solid presence in the field. I think Dunn and Keyes are about even on E’s, but Dunn has many more touches. And Dunn flips the DP ball much better than Keyes at this point.

          • I agree. Pat Casey will figure it out. Ultimately Susac returning behind the plate is the key, as it makes things a lot more simpler for Casey. He can put Keyes at DH and have a Bell-Dunn-Rodriguez-Hayes infield. Of course Jared Norris moves to 1B from RF in the 7th or 8th which makes the late inning defense even better. Also, with the what seems to be the emergence of Brian Stamps, the Beavers may have a true lead-off caliber guy and Nash and Barnes will fight it out for the LF position. Hard to tell who wins that. I prefer Nash because of his speed, but he just hasn’t been able to be consistent at all at the plate.

Also, when Susac can go back to catching it will give Parker Berberet a much needed rest. He’s looked a little tired and worn down and he has been battling injuries. A week off or so could give him a mental and physical break and he could get back on track.

  53. For the first time this year, the Beavs hit single digits for all polls and indices. But their projected RPI takes a hit due to their remaining schedule and the assumption they don’t run the table.

And for the first time we’re getting the nod as the best team in the Pac.

If Susac and Jake come back strong, this could be a nice end to the season followed by a lot of high expectations. I also liked that Wetzler threw one bad pitch (that happened to get smacked) yesterday. He offered very little for hitters to contact well after the first inning. His slider would tail off the plate a little too much, but he kept it down all day. His fastball had nice action, and his curve was called and executed nicely all game. I really liked the bunt whiff.

    http://warrennolan.com/baseball/2011/schedule/Oregon-State

    • I must admit Ben pitched really well. I didn’t expect that. The one thing I liked that he did against Cal and hasn’t been doing, was he lived in the bottom of the strike zone and moved the ball in and out on hitters and never allowed them to be comfortable. He also didn’t walk anybody. That has been a major issue this year. He made them try and earn their way on base and other than the lead-off home run that he left up, they couldn’t handle him. Now he just needs to be consistent.

  54. But what about the stadium?

But seriously, that’s a bit of a surprise. I was expecting to stay at #3 and prepared for a slight drop. Fortunately, enough teams just behind us had a rough week as well.

We could really use teams like UCLA running the table in their non-conference games coming up. (1 each against Long Beach St, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and CS Fullerton and 3 against CS Bakersfield.) Oregon too, with 2 each against Gonzaga and Seattle. Any little bit helps keep our RPI up in the top 8.
