Baseball: Oregon State @ San Diego State

131

First pitch 6pm. This game will be televised on DirectTV in Oregon, and on goaztecs.com.

Matchup is Cole Baylis (0-0, 2.25) vs RHP Travis Pitcher (0-0, 6.00).

Beavs need to get better pitching. They're giving up a ton of runs to inferior squads. Wetzler was disappointing yet again yesterday. Jace Fry is still a two or three weeks away. He could be the answer. Beavs need to tough out two of the next three games. This difficult road trip to open the season could battle test them later on…so far, so good in the results column, but need better execution and pitching.

  1. Pitcher is the name of the pitcher? If his battery mate is John Catcher……………….that would be both awesome and ironic.

How is everyone feeling about the CW this weekend?

  2. What can any of you guys tell me about PK Park? Same firm that did it was selected to design our new baseball park for the U of M. I imagine it’s pretty fancy because of Uncle Phil.

    • It’s nice. As a park, it’s solid. But the stands are too steep. It’s a product of seating versus footprint, like the TTATT is. But the result is that you lose sightlines in the corner on the side you sit. They have the food/beer court down the 1B line, and bleachers with a much better angle jut out down the 3B line. The result is that you need to sit right behind home plate to see the field from the chair-backs. You get a great view of the game from the food/beer court if you can get there early and camp on the wall. So the bleachers on the 3B line end up being the best place to watch the whole game.

  3. Wetzler has been disappointing, but right now they really only have two starters, so I’m not surprised the starting pitching hasn’t looked too good. Jace Fry is gonna be great for the Beavers, I think he’ll wind up being the ace of this team. The only starters that have struggled have been Wetzler and Child and Child was killed with a ton of defensive mistakes behind him. Hopefully Wetzler picks it up. I do wonder, when Dukes is back, how quickly will he be moved into the rotation? I think within 3 weeks or so he will become a starter. As much as I like Wilkerson, I think Dukes has better stuff and more potential this season.

Ideal rotation towards the end of the season for me is Fry, Dukes, Wetzler/Wilkerson and 4th being Wilkerson/Wetzler. There’s going to be more depth in the rotation than in year’s past. More quality arms starting.

Offensively, the young guys need to execute a little better, same goes for Dunn. But bunts have been getting down more this season so far, that’s a good sign. Just need guys to start putting the ball in play with a runner on third and less than two outs for frequently. Too many strikeouts in that situation.

Really impressed with how Tommasini is hitting, he’s improved after the injuries happened. 2B is really a strong spot for the Beavers with him and Smith. Beavers need Conforto in the lineup for his pop, also, Keyes’ best spot is DH. That makes it hard to get Tyler Smith in the field everyday. If Dunn struggles he can play there but who knows there. Beavers have some quality hitters this year, I guess that’s a good problem to have.

    • Has Duke been throwing? He’s like a Greg Oden of baseball. Probably good when he plays……if he doesn’t get hurt.

You have to wonder how much Casey will limit him and where his arm strentgh is at this point.

      • He looked decent in relief last year, showed some things. Think he’s supposed to be back in a month or so. I expect him to be thrown in relief in a bit when he comes back. Pat Casey will definitely want to ease him back into things. Build up his arm, then I expect he’ll start a mid-week game or 2 and gradually raise his pitch count like what happened with Osich last season. I hope he stays healthy, he has a ton of talent.

      • Three more weeks for Duke. He’s been throwing, but only in a rehab setting.

Fry could go this week if he’s on schedule according to reports last week.

I think Gonzalez should have gone yesterday. He only pitched the one inning last week, so he should have been fresh. Wetzler should have been slated for tonight.

    • Interesting.

I can’t tell if they’re in discussions about Failure to Monitor -or- Lack of Institutional Control for individuals or the program as a whole.

It feels like the the NCAA wants to hand down LOIC for some individuals and FTM for the AD. If I were Gary Campbell, I wouldn’t be liking my job security at this point. Chipster wasn’t much better in this particular investigation, and he could still be slapped with a show cause clause. But I’m starting to doubt that more and more. I think the NCAA might be satisfied with a show cause for Campbell since he was already on thin ice for forgery and wire fraud.

        • According to Ted Miller (which basically means nothing) it seem that this leaning towards a FTM than a LOIC. It is interesting that the first thing Oregon seems to be debating with them so far is the date range for recruiting violations.

If you are one who wants Oregon to get get hit hard, encourage UO to argue as much as possible. It is like arguing with your parents when you are in trouble, you can only make it worse.

          • It sounds like the one thing they CAN agree on is that it’s “at least” FTM. Remember that the hoops investigation was rolled into this one (that we’ve heard). And individual actions can be labelled LOIC without the institution being labelled as such. I know it sounds funky, but that’s where “show cause” comes into play.

          • Well I do hope that they roll it all together and call the entire thing LOIC (because in layman’s terms it sure seems that way). How can they label actions LOIC and not the institution, isn’t that what LOIC means? Only the NCAA could come up with something like that.

  4. Whoah…2008? I guess that’s LaMichael James and Darron Thomas’ recruiting year.

Were they still within the 5 year period since their prior major violation? If so, the ban hammer is coming down HARD on them. (Upon internet research, the prior malfeasance was in 2003 – so it is possible within that 5 year period…though they could maybe wriggle out of it I guess.)

I’ve read that whether or not a team is on probation, there’s a big, big penalty if a team has 2 major violations within five years. If you get labeled a repeat offender, the penalty STARTS at a 1 year drop of the program. Though they aren’t required to give you that – see Oklahoma University’s basketball team.

This is going to get interesting.

    • As I recall, Lyles came on board with them in Dec 2007. 08-11 is the whole time Lyles worked for them. If they had problems in 03, then stuff in 08 is withing the 5 yr period.

Sounds like goodby, slap on the wrist….

    • I bet they will classify Lyles as a “coach” in relation to what he did for them in the recruiting world. I bet it will be considered a lesser violation to have too many coaches than the alternative. The article does indicate that they used too many coaches in recruiting.

Sanctions for extra coaches usually result in a reduced coaching staff/reduced coaching staff allowed to recruit. The overall result in this case will be minimal for Oregon.

  5. Beavers may have gotten on the board this inning if Gorton doesn’t make a dumb mistake. Can’t make mistakes like that when you’re behind.

    • “we are in constructive negotiations with the NCAA on the draft of their proposed findings”

Translation: we’re seeing if Knight will pay them off.

  6. I wonder, if Taylor Starr continues to pitch like he did yesterday and Carlos Rodriguez pitches well, what are the chances Matt Boyd gets moved into the rotation? May need to move him in there soon.

  7. Baylis gets a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the Aztecs’ threat in the second. Looked like it was outside though. Oh well, needed a break there. The first two innings took 50 minutes. Yeah, this could be a 4 hr plus game.

    • I would be upset if that call went against the Beavs. There was one pitch on our side that was called a ball there, but Gorton framing it was the difference.

If every half inning took as long as the bottom of the second, this game would last six-plus hours.

  8. OT…

I’ve always watched the Amazing Race with my family. It’s just another one of those real-life game shows like Survivor.

Anyway, the view from left field into home plate shows the pitcher’s cleaning mat on the backside of the mound, and it looks like the flags that show uses for its contestants.

  9. Gorton does not look good at the plate tonight. Has seen 6 pitches tonight and has looked at 4 strikes and hasn’t looked good the two times he swung.

  10. With 2 outs, why wasn’t Hayes on third when the right fielder throws directly home? Bad fundamentals so far this season with this team.

  11. Baylis is finally starting to have command of his pitches. Maybe he can give them 4 or 5 innings tonight and keep the Aztecs at 4 runs

  12. Beavers gonna have to do some damage against the Aztecs bullpen like they did against the Gauchos. Need to start putting some runs on the board.

  13. Dunatov walks there but wow, that looked like it was right down the middle of the plate. Home plate umpire has an……interesting strike zone.

  14. Feels like it’s just going to be one of those nights where hard hit balls by the Aztecs fall and hard hit balls by the Beavers don’t. Can’t do much about it.

  15. This is why you start Schultz and Boyd.
    a. They’re good at it.
    b. You never get to those guys if you have bad starters in front of them.

    • I wonder why Schultz has pitched so little. Was one of their better relievers last year and started effectively. Would think he would be used more. I hope he’s starting tomorrow but if not he needs be in the rotation next weekend. Him or Boyd have to be in the rotation right now.

      • I don’t remember either having a quality start last year. To be fair to Boyd, I think his only start came against Vandy. And Schultz might have had one good start in the four (?) he did start. But more often he was blown up in the second or third and replaced by Wetzler.

In fact, Schultz looked best when he came in for a pitcher who was blown up in the first or second inning. He would pitch the remainder of the game as if he were the starter, holding teams to what they got to start the game.

That being said, I thought he would move into a starting role this year. I mean… Baylis? When has he ever shown good stuff?

Wetzler should have thrown last night. And take your pick from several relievers who were run for an inning last week before sitting to start on Thursday. Gonzalez, Schultz and Brocker all looked serviceable.

I haven’t heard, but I think Fry will make it on the mound this weekend.

  16. Such a frustrating game. Every hard hit ball by SDSU has found holes, every hard hit ball by the Beavers has been caught for the most part. SDSU catching a ton of breaks. Man.

  17. Beavers could be building a rally here. They could still somehow pull this out, I’ve seen a bigger comeback, won’t rule anything out.

  18. That pretty much sums up the game. Beavers get the first 3 runners on base and look like they may slowly be getting themselves back into the game, then two straight bad at-bats and only get 1 run when they could easily have gotten 2 or 3. They just aren’t executing tonight.

  19. So it looks like the Nikegon info on the investigation is just a bunch of hooey.
    http://special.registerguard.com/documents/319984-ncaas-proposed-findings-of-violations/

A preliminary document dated 12/16/11 which is heavily redacted and has the word “proposed” in the title gets KATU all jacked up with a story about the school receiving “formal” accusations?

    Hello?

You will know when Nikegon receives their formal Notice of Allegations. Unlike the Letter of Inquiry, the NOA is a public event which will be shared with the world regardless of how shady the school wants to be.
