Baseball: Oregon State @ Pacific (San Diego)

2pm today.

Looks like Gametracker and radio for this one. Friday's game is on TV, local SD station.

The story is if Casey can figure out his outfield. Gotta get Conforto out there, at least versus these weak opponents (have a feeling he'll strike out a lot in conference play). Maybe try Jordon Dunatov today against the lefty. Subplot is whether the road worn Beavs can take care of business versus Pacific, SDSU, San Diego, and Kansas State. It'll be tough.

The match is Paul Moeller vs…someone, presumably Wetzler, but no official announcement. Casey might hold him back for the more challenging opponents Friday-Sunday. Pacific isn't good,(0-4) but they did play Stanford tough.

  1. perhaps casey feels like conforto will be more of a weapon against pac 12 pitching if he limits his at bats against teams like USD, who they should beat regardless of what lineup he goes with because teams won’t have as strong of a scouting report on him.

    • I think it’s more of a case of Conforto being lefty and Pacific’s starter today is a lefty, I think Casey is trying to ease him things against lefties. I think as the season progresses he will be in there everyday. What’s interesting with the lineup is, who plays when Gorton returns behind the plate? I would think Rodriguez moves to third, Dun at SS, but who goes to 2B? Tommasini or Smith? Tommasini overall is a solid defender and is swinging it well, but Smith was really good for the Beavers last season, especially in Pac-10 play. Hayes will likely be their 1B and Keyes at DH. That kind of leaves out Dylan Davis who has played well so far. Conforto would probably play RF, with Matthews and Barnes filling out the OF.

Casey is going to have to get creative with the lineup, a lot of deserving guys to play at a consistent basis.

  2. Tyler Smith walks, two on and two out for Ryan Dunn. Tyler Smith has to have the best eye on the team. He always works the count full it seems like and walks a ton.

  3. Matthews struck out but the ball got away from the catcher and Keyes scored and Matthews reached. Beavers catch a break there. 6-3 now

  4. Pacific is hitting the ball hard consistently against Wetzler. Got to get someone ready to go in the bullpen. He’s definitely struggling.

      • It is concerning but he can be very good, just needs to be more consistent. He breezes through guys the first time through the order, needs to start being consistent after that. I expect Fry will be the ace of the staff by late March though. He just needs to get healthy from his back. No idea when he will be back, hopefully by when their homestand begins.

  5. Only reason Keyes is playing third is because of Gorton’s suspension. When Gorton comes back Keyes will go to DHing. I don’t know how Smith would do at 3B. He’s a SS/2B, moving to third is quite the adjustment. Jake will be back at third later this weekend, that’s when I believe Gorton’s suspension is over.

    • He has, also, John Tommasini has been impressive this season at the plate. He’s improved from the left side, that was an issue before, but it appears he’s improved there. I think Casey has a good situation at 2B this season. Both guys I think will produce consistently.

  6. Beavers finally get a shutdown inning from their pitcher. Beavers keep Pacific off the scoreboard for the first time since the second inning. 10-7 Beavers heading to the 8th

  7. Flawless execution by the Beavers in the 9th. After Tommasini singles, Barnes lays down bunt, Pacific throws it away, allows Tommasini to move to third and then a squeeze play executed by Smith scores Tommasini. 11-7 Beavers

  8. With guys in scoring position the Beavers just need to start putting the ball in play more. That’s been the main issue. Guys just need to put the ball in play and they will get the guys in from third and less than 2 outs more.

  9. Beavers win 10-7. Offense was good today and the bullpen, especially Taylor Starr. He was really good in relief today. Allowed them to save up a lot of their bullpen for the weekend.

      • I think some of it has to do with him learning how to be a pitcher. Before the injuries I believe he threw around 92 or 93? So he was much more of a thrower than a pitcher. When a guy has to become a true pitcher it takes some adjusting. Now he has to hit his spots and set up hitters. So, with about 3 outings now I think he’s adjusting to it. If he can become a consistent reliever out of the pen it will just add even more depth in the bullpen. Never a bad thing.

  10. If Smith is playing in RF, does that mean he has enough of an arm to play SS? He likely has the range to play CF. I guess we’ll see if Matthews is living up to his assignment tonight.

Gorton and Gordon are done with their suspensions. So I wonder if Jake takes 3B and Keyes goes to DH. I don’t like that Conforto and Davis are the odd men out here.

And I wonder why Wetzler was made to go on a Thursday. If he’s going to be our Friday thrower, shouldn’t he have waited until tonight to go?

    • On the bright side, Tommasini, Barnes, Smith and Hayes came ready to play. Jake and Keyes are a little slow out of the gate. Conforto and Davis are doing quite well as frosh. But Matthews and especially Dunn have been disappointing thus far.

    • Selling dope in Burns? Not a real great business strategy. At least we have a plausible explanation for his erratic play over his career.

      • He said he was going to Utah… with the weight he had it was likely headed east for a quick profit. Plus the cops in Burns love to tear apart a car… I am surprised though that they did it to Deane seeing as though he is white.

        • right… although you would be pissing a lot of people off if you even went 65 on that road. One time I was going about 80 just east of Burns coming over a blind hill and someone going the opposite way was flashing their high beams at me and making a waving slow down motion. Slowed down to the speed limit and sure enough there was a cop on the other side of the hill. Speeding out there is almost a culture.

          • that was me…got to watch for others!

Jack: The key is to smoke weed during the mule packing, hence decreasing the need for speed…and then, in Park City do the blow with your new-found lady friends (or so I once read in a book)

          • Note to self:

If ever transporting 10 pounds of marijuana and a white powder yet to be determined… don’t drive 31 mph over the speed limit near Burns. It will piss off the locals, but it will ensure that the po-po (as I am sure to call them when transporting such a bounty) will not pull me over. Other measures which to take are not borrowing a friend’s Altima in order to not speed involuntarily and to “smoke it all” in case all other measures fail, and I can explain such to the po-po.

Then head for Park City, where new-found (and literary) lady friends use the word “blow” in a liberal manner.

My five year plan looks pretty good right now.

  11. I am surprised because he was a high school honors student from presumably a strict Catholic school. I may be naive but this looks like more than enough for casual personal use so this kid must have fallen pretty far. His background doesn’t fit the drug traffic profile.
You may ask what is a drug traffic profile and I really don’t know.
I do know that dope use by college kids is pretty common. At a Holiday Open House one of the parents told me that his son has told him that one of the football players actually has a Medical Marijuana card. How times have changed.

    • From what I know, the TCU incident isn’t an isolated thing…it happens EVERYWHERE. They were just unfortunate enough to get caught….Let’s just hope our players arn’t dumb enough. There arn’t a lof of Ashton Jefferson’s around anymore to take the fall for our star players..*cough cough* *hint hint*

      • Remember that whatshisname, who was immediately kicked off Nikegon’s team in the laptop incident because he wasn’t the starting QB, was caught last year on the OSU campus at 3am after leaving a dorm, driving down the RR tracks drunk… and in possession of pot.

        Two points:
        1. He must have been visiting someone. Hmmm?
        B. The State Trooper who arrested him must have been a former frat boy.
