Beavs return home after a 12 game road trip to start the season. That is a brutal stretch, so you can understand why they'd go 8-4, even versus bad to average competition. Four home games now versus pretty good competition (West Virginia, Connecticut/Illinois, Oklahoma)

Big news is that Jace Fry will pitch Saturday's game. Need him to live up to the hype and stabilize this rotation. Wetlzer needs to prove today that he should (a) be a #1 starter and (b) be in the rotation at all. It's almost a season and a half now, so the grace period is over.

Cluttered day with baseball at 5:30pm and hoops at 6. My suggestion is watch hoops and Gametracker the baseball game.

  1. Actually there are 4 games baseball games this weekend. WVU on 3/9, then a double-header on 3/10 – ILL @ 4 and UCONN @ 7. OK is on 3/12.

This is an interesting baseball series. OSU is teaming with UO and Nike to bring this competition to the NW in a round-robin style tournament. The collaboration gives these teams that are disadvantaged in several ways (weather, location, lack of close D1 programs) bring some power to the area. Hoping for some good weather and good wins.

    • OSU has what it takes to beat Arizona and advance to the Pac-12 Final. It will take guts and execution down the stretch. Physically we match up well with these guys. Need a great all around team effort and simply to find the will to win!

    • The rule is the problem. He can’t stop players from leaving and going to the NBA. He’s a slimy guy but honestly, he’s a superior coach. It’s pretty amazing that he can get the young players to come in and play at a high level right away. I’m not sure any coach can really count on a system where his entire starting lineup turns over every year and the new starters are all freshman.

Contrast that with Ben Howland and Sean Miller and what is happening to their programs when they bring in highly rated recruits. It all falls apart.

The solution should be the rule that baseball has. Let the kids be eligible to get drafted out of high school and if they go to college, make them stay there 3 years.

That way if kids who don’t want to attend school, they can go to the NBA or D League or overseas.

And if they do choose school, they must stay 3 years. Schools get their “student” athletes, the NBA gets their minor league system and the players get at least some education.

    • Yeah, but I don’t think he’s one of the main candidates. Just a name being thrown out there. Illinois wants Shaka Smart badly.

      • I agree on both counts. I’m guessing he’s a ways down their list, after Smart, maybe Greg Marshall and Brad Stephens as well. Still, his Chicago area connections would make sense and those dream candidates don’t always work out.

        • Stevens is going nowhere, and I think Marshall will be the same unless UVA comes calling.

Smart is on the top of their list. That’s not a secret. Others being mentioned (ahead of Coach Rob) are Anthony Grant (big buyout), Lorenzo Romar (burned out out UW?), Reggie Theus (Pitino’s Chicago connection) and Scott Drew (coming home to take care of his parents?).

          • Top three choices are Smart, Smart, and Smart. They just fired a great recruiter who is a spotty coach. AD worked with Smart previously. No way they hire CR. They think too much of their program. He does not have the needed resume. They will hire a minority coach, as there was a huge uproar after their football hiring this year.

  2. Love the offensive lineup for tonight. Barnes, Conforto and Davis in the OF, not sure about that defensively but great offensively. Keyes is DHing. That helps the infield defense. Beavers should score some runs tonight, hopefully Ben Wetzler steps up and starts pitching like what he’s capable of.

  3. I hope CR keeps Brandt on a really short leash tonight. I think we really need to establish physical play down low if we’re going to win this game and if Brandt is going to act like he’s 6’1, 180 lbs then CR has to pull him.

  4. Wetzler off to usual slow start, Rodriguiz playing better D than usual and, Jay Reece getting help with commentary from Jim Wilson.

  5. Keyes a single, makes three hits in a row going back to last game. Really could use production from him.
Top (Beav half) of 2nd, runners on 2 and 3 with one out.

  6. One zip Beavs going to bottom of 2nd. Beavs are visitors tonight in this tourney.

Really good to have Jim Wilson doing color, now we will see if Jay R. is a better play by play man with this help.

  7. Jay Reese ain’t bad-does a local show nightly in Bend, with some pretty well-known names..I’m so glad I haven’t listened to Parker last night–he had to be apoplectic (sp?) after a few missed free throws.

I get an image of Tark chewing his towel when I think of Mike….

    • Parker was sweatin’ it when Wroten made some 6 straight FT’s, kept pointing out his low FT percentage and it finally paid off. Overall a pretty good broadcast IMO.

  8. Conforto 2 RBI double, wind aided. 4-0 Beavs two out 5th, Keyes up bases loaded, well hit fly out to end inning with 3 LOB.
