Early game tomorrow with a 1pm tip.

Some are calling the Beavers’ style boring. I tweeted out that I personally find it gritty, hard nosed, and refreshing…better than anything CR ever did. Wayne Tinkle reteweeted that, so he at least appreciates some fans get it. It’s only 7 games so I don’t want to get too excited about Tinkle. CR looked good early on, too. But I like the style of play, the increased moxy of the team, more defense oriented, more designed plays on offense, and the rebounding and boxing out have been phenomenal so far.. This is all good. On an individual level, I see Victor Robbins stepping up his game and complimenting Payton. Olaf is hit and miss but can mix in with those guys to help out. The point guard, MD (can’t spell his name and don’t want to look it up) needs to finish in the lane. He does a good job getting into the lane, but can’t seem to finish. If he starts making those shots suddenly the offense is not bad with four guys who can score. This means there’s possible upside to the team. Until that happens, though, they’ll have to rely on defense and effort.

My biggest problem with the team is WT has them playing so well that I keep forgetting that they’re still in the learning stage and I’m not supposed to be expecting too much of them yet.

So far I’d say that shot selection is their biggest weakness.

What a change from CR’s teams. Wow!!!

Shot selection will improve. This team is going to be a defense-first mentality team. Will have to be without any proven scorers, with the exception of Payton. Next year will see a major boost in offensive production with the new class, but I like the defensive side, which will still be a major “must-have” in the Tinkle era.

I’ve thought about CR’s first year and it didn’t get off to that great of a start, I think they went 6-6 in non-conference play against some pretty suspect competition. For some reason Cal and Stanford were completely befuddled by the Princeton and 1-3-1 and that was over half of his league wins. As I look back, that season was kind of “gimmicky” and that style not destined for long term success. Even the CBI was kind of a fluke.

I think Tinkle is going to build this the right way and who knows I think he could get 13 wins out of this team, which is what CR got before the CBI.

Now now… if he would have made the Final Four, it stil lwould have been “gimmicky.’

Point was at the time that a bunch of kis who were lucky to be playing above the D3 level and were just shat upon by their previous coach were able to win a couple games.

Yeah, CR’s first team started out 0-5. They picked up steam in conference play. The 1-3-1 worked when they had Seth Tarver, but after that it was exposed badly. Another thing that I think hurt Robinson was that he was too loyal to guys like Calvin Haynes, who was one of the most selfish players I’ve ever seen at any level. Felt that CR should’ve given more minutes to Cunningham, Brandt, Burton, Nelson since they were the future. Jay John’s leftovers were all for themselves. I will say that the CR holdovers are the total opposite. Love LMWs game especially as when the shots aren’t falling, he’s driving to the hoop.

I have not seen alot of their games. However, what I do notice is that they take care of the ball, and the extend their defense.

I am not sure about Tinkle’s ability to draw up plays. I saw a little too much one-on-one down the stretch of games.

The real test will be conference play. But ibwill try to watch Tomorrow’s game against a strong opponent.

The one-on-one isn’t Tinkle. It’s the players who fall into old habits. Tinkle is trying to break them. What people should be looking out for is Tinkle’s coaching the players during timeouts and fouls. He’s telling them the one-on-one stuff isn’t acceptable. It isn’t coming from Tinkle’s play calling. This was actually discussed in a Connor Letourneau article recently (pre O-Live boycott).

You can tell Tinkle’s influence by how the guys can hold a lead at the end and close out games. I don’t get the inevitable ‘when will they blow it’ feeling and I don’t miss when they would just give the ball to Roberto when under 2 minutes left and see what happens that we had with CR.

For all those who thought (think) Anderson was some sort of honorable guy. This is who he is. Says he would not hesitate to recruit kids committed to Wisconsin. Well, Mr. Scruples, those kids were recruited on UW’s dime. Scruples, no. Thief in the night, yup.

Expect the same when his dream job at Utah State opens up.

No mention of the recruits Riley poached from OSU on OREGON STATE’S dime, and this load that should have been swallowed is so ignorant he seems to think that Utah State is Utah. This individual is a disgrace to beaver fans. Someone do us all the honor

The talent and ability level of individuals on the offense doesn’t lead itself to exciting basketball. So yes, to get the majority of their points won’t be something spectacular happening, since when we think of spectacular we think of one-on-one play and up-and-down play, two things that don’t necessarily play to our strengths, and Tinkle recognizes that better than any of us do.

But the few plays are working. Some of my favorites are the sets where Olaf has the ball near the block and there are backdoor cuts, sometimes with an upscreen that let’s a guard get to the paint off a dump off or bounce pass. Or the upscreens that allow for a cutter to get free space for a lob (Duvivier, GPII both as beneficiaries from LMW). When they need a bucket, they can get one (dry spells are far and few between). Once there are more shooters, we will surely see more pin down screens where Thompson Jr. will be able to hoist jumpers ala Steph Curry at Davidson.

I can tolerate the “boring” play because a lot of the boring play also comes from the other team not being able to do much because of that defense that constantly closes out and doesn’t allow for a ton of things to happen.

To change the long term perception of the Beaver football program we actually need Andersen to succeed AND Riley to fail. Sorry, it’s a cutthroat business and I’m backing OSU.

        VN:F [1.9.22_1171]

Riley doesn’t have to fail. Andersen just needs to win more games consistently and get to bigger bowls. Then it’ll be obvious Riley was the problem. I mean it’s obvious already unless emotion (love for the guy) clouds your opinion, but that would make it pretty much indisputable.

I still think Riley’s capped at Nebraska, btw. He’ll be trying hard due to fear of the media ripping him a new one, so maybe that translates into something positive, but the guy is his own worst enemy and that will never change. My guess is he wins 8 to 9 games there, too…and that will likely be views as failure, but they’ll all agree he’s nice, so they put it up with it for 3 years instead of 2.

I don’t know if I agree with you on this one, Angry. Yes, if Andersen steadily wins 8-9 games (the sooner the better) the logical deduction, given the trend since 2010, would be that Riley was the problem. But to remove all doubt, it would be nice if Riley consistently underperformed in Lincoln, which by their standard is 9-10 wins a year. So, in short, I hope Riley fails, to coin a phrase.

I think the immediate problem is what defines a “good year” for the Beavs in 2015. I figured Riley was on a path for 4 wins next year, +/- 1. I heard Petros Papadakis say on SXM college football nation that he thought the Beavs were a 3 win team next year (this before the Andersen announcement had been made and that fact contributed in his estimation to Riley bailing on the program). From this my definition of success next year for the Beavs is a 6-6 record; 7-5 would be great. Sorta like Erickson’s first year.

Another narrative battle for you to lead the charge on next season, Angry

you can say that, but looking ahead, IF the Beavs should only win 4 or 5 games in 2015 and Riley holds to the Nebraska norm and wins 8 or 9, we run the risk of a Riley revanchism effect. And so having an external validator like Petros, who is a fan of OSU besides, say that OSU was only likely to win 3 games in 2015 can be used in the fight over next year’s narrative

Sorry to say this but – For the time being at least I figure Riley will get somewhat better recruits just because he’s recruiting to Nebraska and its past prestige. The ‘neat deal’ will be if he can coach them to a higher level.

It’s all about coaching – as we are seeing with the the men’s & women’s basketball teams.

Riley simply had quit trying. If he now chooses to perform, at Nebraska, and succeeds, it in no way negates his failure in recent years, at OSU.

They talked about being down to earth and friendly. “Hang-ability,” was important, Rueck said, because in a small town, you have to be able to hang out with everyone. Ego was off limits, because it doesn’t work in a city this size, where there’s nowhere to hide. But they were also adamant that they wanted someone who wanted to be here.”

Other thoughts on the new Andersen era:

Civil wars are likely to get competitive on a regular basis again. I think next year’s situation, with UO having a young QB, Andersen et al having the defense play new schemes with new energy, and the game at Autzen, it could be very competitive. I don’t know how UOs defense looks next year with the personnel it will have, but its easy imagine Andersen taking a very prepared and energetic team to Autzen. Even if he did lose to Ohio State 59-0 recently.

Andersen and his coaching match-ups will be an interesting story. I wonder if there might be fewer late games at first because of this novelty? Eventually, I see fewer late games because OSU is winning and relevant again.

I expect Andersen to be successful. Were it not for a terrible economy, I’d suggest we might see some tangible movement towards Reser improvements; maybe a campaign to fund the old side matching the new (likely without all the amenties though). With the players soon to enter the field through a entryway under VFC, it’d be cool think that someday the stadium might be a double-deck horseshoe, but that kind of capacity obviously isn’t warranted yet and may never be. Gadzooks, they players might even emerge from a new helmet, and the semi-turgid one could be moved to Reser Plaza for kid photo ops!

Beavs are going to win again.

    This is a nice win.
I think the number of MSU turnovers is a good sign for OSU defense.

Good win. Play was very sloppy at times, but found a way to settle down each time.

Wish I could get up there for a game. I love the way these guys play. I don’t care if they supposedly have bad talent and will get killed in conference (maybe). The style and most importantly effort is worth supporting. What is most exciting is you can see in the players’ eyes they’re buying in and starting to believe they can win games.

Four more OOC games, depaul and UCSB will be the big tests out of those. Quinnipiac will be a test due to the travel. This is a good OOC schedule they assembled. Depaul beat Stanford already, so that game should give us an idea if the Beavs can compete in conference.

Duvivier played his best game since the season opener. Finishing better and played a solid floor game. Payton was great in the second half. Still picks up cheap fouls cause of his athleticism. Refs have trouble officiating him. His mid range is getting better. He’s gonna be a damn good scorer soon. Offense is often ugly but the Beavers are so good defensively. Their help defense is night and day compared to the last few years. They’ll win their fair share of games this season just cause of how much they disrupt opposing offenses. Was a win that should have been expected but always good to see the Beavers make all the plays down the stretch to win.

I think we’ll see the ancillary players change each night. MD, Olaf, Robbins, etc. Tonight it was Reid with 13 points. Payton is the only reliable scorer. I thought Robbins had a breakout but not yet. The thing is all these guys are really close to becoming more consistent. The game should slow down for them very soon.

Selfishly, I hope Joe stays and that keeps Isaac around too. (As well as his little bro for CHS)

Also hope Brennan is retained. Aside from his work with the WRs, dude is out recruiting while Opie is in Nebraska and has no idea if he will be employed at any moment.Talked to his wife a couple of days ago, she says they are in wait and see mode, but they definitely want to stay as their family is in a groove and would like to keep consistency for the kids.

Haven’t heard anything on Brasfield or or Perry, wonder what their deal is.

Double gain for beavers? Not on Beavers, on Pac rival….seemed like an example of the “do-nothing-utility-guy” Riley excelled at recruiting for DE.

Riley: “Too slow at DE and too small for DT? We’ll play you at both and talk up your motor”…not a bash so much on Wynn as previous examples.

So far I love what I am seeing from coach Tinkle and this team. They don’t have the horses, but they don’t give up and play some lock down defense. Winning ugly! Love it! This team just may exceed my expectations and I think they can be competitive in Pac-12 play most nights if they continue to play defense first.

Gazette times article mentioning chucky keeton as a potential qb target as well as a Beau Baldwin/ Vernon Adams combo as OC/QB.
    All speculative of course.

I guess he could stay. But Alvarez is in full damage control mode trying to keep this class together and Aranda is a big key for a few of the recruits.

So now that the bar has been set, does Oregon State congratulate UofO if they win the National Championship? I’d say that is more impressive than a Heisman trophy.
