Why can’t the marketing department do anything right? They put a giant orange stripe right down the center of Andersen’s face?

A line down someone’s face is (a) disrespectful (b) looks like an Oompaloompa (c) looks like they’re crossing him out (d) looks like an old Polaroid exposed too soon (e) he looks badly sunburned, etc. Who thought this was a good idea, and how do they have a job?

      • I will join you on the marketing/branding fight Angry. We desperately need help here. Hire Weiden & Kennedy or another kick ass agency and start changing the image and narrative. Even the black tablecloth over a cheap retractable table during pressers has to go. Old podium – throw it away. Background wall same thing. Inflatable helmet – burn it. It’s little stuff but we do look rinky dink.

So much of this stuff doesn’t have to cost much either. It’s more about sense and details. Some 20 year old intern probably thought the orange stripe would look good ala the facemasks. HELP!!

  1. I think they are going for a tough, no bullshit look……no smile, dark glasses…..but I don’t find orange and white particularly threathening colors.

  2. Here’s some questions I hope reporters will ask at the press conference, in order of importance.

    1. Describe his coaching style/philosophy.
    2. Describe is recruiting philosophy.
    3. Describe his leadership style.
    4. What are his expectations of the program?
    5. Which coaches will be coming from Wisconsin?
    6. A timeline of when he was contacted and interviewed.

  3. Lighten up guys. We’ve been waiting for years for our school to establish and foster a winning culture and it’s finally happening. Stop being so negative.

  4. Reading some Wisconsin message boards and hearing some of Andersen’s comments, it sounds like the issue regarding academics was getting jucos in, not necessarily high school kids.

  5. I fucking love this dude. What a breath of fresh air… I never post here, always read, but I love how he shot down the “it’s a challenge to drive recruits here” into a “it’s a positive” let’s fucking go!

  6. Andersen doesn't feel that there are disadvantages to recruiting to Corvallis unlike the image that some of the media here want to paint.— Angie Machado (@AngieMachado1) December 12, 2014

Is she not one of the guilty parties? Trying to claim she did not use that as a crutch???

    • The media commenting on their own manipulation is always worth a laugh. Like with Ebola, after a few weeks the press starts talking about the public hysteria and overreaction. Gee, I wonder where that came from?

    • I don’t know if Mama ever said you can’t recruit to Corvalls. But she certainly didn’t dispell it either.

Nutter Butter (aka Schnell) asked the only negative question (cowtown bs) and Andersen flipped it on her. When asked about the possibility of open practices the coach says “We can trust Beaver Nation but can we trust the media?” He smiled but I think he really meant it.

      Goe was actually in Corvallis.

  7. Anyone that has worked with or near a University knows that the freshman dropout rate requires new blood or jc transfers in large amounts at sophomore and junior levels to keep the system and dollars flowing. Even at Stanford (non sports), the jc transfers do not need the same qualifications as freshman. At University of California they have guarantees of entry if you can maintain a B average with certain minimum core level classes at the JC level. There has to be more to this story or perhaps it is a creative writing. Does this mean that Riley quit because he could not get Peko in?

  8. Andersen is awesome. People wonder what I’ve wanted…well that guy is basically me if I were coach.

I always wrote on here to maximize mismatches, use personnel you have, yada yada. He basically said he believes in doing all that. Even smart enough to realize there’s a time to play fast, a time to play slow, medium, etc. Talked about a QB’s mind…he’s talking about smart decisions but also when plays break down, what the QB can improvise.

Beavs are going to win at least 6 games next year because he’ll maximize the roster and out think/out flank people.

      • He didn’t say anything vague like, “thing” or “deal” or “tweak” or “well, you know…” or ……well….you get it. He was on point with everything he said and wasn’t thrown off by any of the questions. Shows he has a sharp mind and can think on his feet.

    • A coach that has a bit if an edge and tells it straight. He can actually put a sentence together as well which is refreshing. No “neat deals” and other corny sayings.

  9. Andersen killed this press conference. He joked with the media and got them on his side. He stressed the importance of Defense first. He talked about the success of his players coming first, be it on the field, academically and socially. He talked about personalizing the system to match the talent on the field. He feels he will have no problem recruiting to Corvallis. I felt he hit every point he needed to hit and then some. I am stoked about the future of Oregon State football.

  10. I liked his brief talk about recruiting, basically ‘If a kid commits to the program because of relationships to the coaching staff, I’ll go after them.’

Sounds like he’ll definitely go after Austin Kafentzis. Probably all the kids from California, Texas, Florida and the one from Samoa.

  11. Gina tweets that Yvenson Bernard was part of the travel party bringing Andersen.

Tumwater Dave on JoeBeav slamming media naysayers. My feed dropped as he was saying, “does Pat Casey think he is a chump…..” Anyone got the full quote?

      • Painful. Typically vague answers. He seemed confused, mentally compromised (I know, I know….). It was awkward. None of the focus and clarity of Andersen and I didn’t finish it.

        • Thanks for the recap. Some folks are saying Opie’s gonna win big in Lincoln… I just can’t see it. He may have had a chance with wholesale coordinator changes but his loyalty or stupidity will ensure he doesn’t.

          Thank you Huskers!

  12. I was actually at the press conference today, and I loved his fire and enthusiasm for the program. I especially approved of his shot at the local media when he was asked about the question of open practices, too.

Really looking forward to the future with this guy.

      • Haha, I took pictures, too (not very good ones though). Off camera, he and Ed Ray seem to have great chemistry already. He also was talking with people in the crowd and shaking hands before the cameras and reporters forced him to get off for one on one interviews and whatnot.

  13. In the context of Beaver Football coaching hires, is this not the second biggest hire since the 60’s(?) based on resume and accomplishments? I’m sure Erickson is first.

      • I also think that he’ll outperform Erickson. Maybe not QUITE as high on the high, but the potential is definitely there, but not as variable or low either. And I think the players will have less “attitude” and be less prone to dumb penalties.

Don’t get me wrong; confidence and pride are great and necessary; but too often “attitude” is a convenient replacement for earned, genuine confidence.

        • I concur about the highest high, though it took Dennis a lot of luck to get us 11 wins to be honest. No matter how long Andersen sticks around, I think he’ll leave this program in a better place than Dennis did though.

          • We should be honest and acknowledge Andersen doesn’t always stick around long. I don’t have a problem with that (as I’ve explained in previous threads), it will likely be Massari’s challenge to manage.

The good thing is after Andersen elevates the program, it will be attractive to subsequent, competent coaches.

          • Exactly. Stanford was a fucking joke before Harbaugh got them whipped in to shape. They’re just now starting to decline due to his absence, but he built a powerhouse that became a destination. Not saying Andersen will have the same effect at OSU but the potential is there.

    • Wait, a jet? A freakin’ jet?

I was told by one of the old guard just the other day…’ OSU can’t afford jets. Didn’t (I) see the front page of the G-T? NU sent a gawl darn JET for Riley…we could never compete with that!’

Getting the ancient alum/old guard to stop being the beaten 28 year old kid is a difficult project.

      • Been told that corporate jets have been available but it wasn’t Opie’s thing. When needed we should utilize them.

I guess today’s jet is owned by a donor from Lake Oswego. He’s a Coug but his late wife was an OSU grad and a big donor.

With some updated electronics, ground services, etc. Corvallis Airport looks like it could take a B737 or an A321. I use to fly there many years ago with my dad but it looks updated.

  14. I know most aren’t into it, but Beavs volleylball is hanging with #1 Stanford in the first set, although they just gave up 2 quick points and trail 17-20.

  15. Thought Dr. Ray was a bit over the top in these last two press conferences and couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps comments on Angry Beavs lit a fire under his behind.

Dr. Ray do you read Angry Beavs? If so just wanted to let you know that my hat’s off to you for saying that you care about Beaver athletics.

Now don’t drop the ball, keep your athletic director’s nose to the grind stone and make sure he does the same thing with the coaching staffs.

BDC should have gotten rid of CR years ago and didn’t. Banker and other football staff members should have been dumped and weren’t.

Imo BDC’s resignation would be icing on the cake.

  16. “Kevin Hampton @HamptonKevin

De Carolis:contract details for Andersen being worked out, but it’s a 6-year deal for $2.45 mill., goes up $100k yearly #gtsports #gobeavs”

  17. Something just feels different about all of this. Maybe because it is! Ed Ray fired up about sports and talking about “our house” and how “good enough” isn’t good enough anymore at OSU, The discussion about “world class” facilities, a new coach saying all the right things and talking about OSU AND Corvallis as a destination…Angry finding the only cloud in today’s silver lining to be just a poster and not railing on about the same stuff that’s been driving us ALL nuts…

    Someone pinch me!

I would really like to ask everyone to carry on this positive feeling and to keep stressing that its long past time to

    #ChangeTheNarrativeOSU.

    • He mentioned he’d thought of the “OS? DS!!” on JoeBeav just before the Andersen press conference; glad to see he carries through.

  18. We need to keep reminding people of these things when they try to regurgitate the same stale lines about Corvallis and OSU:

(ok, maybe we should forget that one)

Those of us who REALLY know Corvallis know its kind of always been “our little secret”

    #excitedaboutbeaverfootballagain

    • I’ve never been to Wisconsin, but as a state that prides itself as “America’s Dairyland,” it seems quite ironic they would poke fun at Corvallis.

It’d be a great place for Lindsay Smell. She can load up on those cheese curds she loves so much.

  19. Damn, you really will complain about anything. Always gotta take all criticism I read from you with a grain of salt. Ever since Massari took over I think marketing has been a lot more creative. We’ll see what the print stuff looks like.

I also don’t think you quite get what the word “ghetto” means lol but I’ll let you slide

  20. Thread up for hoops tomorrow.

I also need to know who wants to inherit AB in my will. Beavergopher, you want it? If we get some names interested I can throw up a poll and let majority decide.

  21. Apparently, Andersen took some officials aside and said no more of his image on posters, flyers, etc…kind of cool, but I think some of this type of promotion is needed in the first year especially.

    • I don’t think it’s necessary. We can act like we’ve been there before… even if we haven’t for several years.

From what I read about the Andersens and their move to Wiscy, they were uncomfortable with the spotlight except for Coach’s ability to be in it and to give straightforward answers. The family values privacy and small town values.

Apparently Corvallis is perfect for what they want.

There will be no “neato” stories about GA riding his bike to work. There will be stories of hard work and development… and likely winning to follow. It’s too bad nobody asked him about the graduation rate at OSU and how he’s been completely successful at both USU and an inferior hockey school.

The kids in his charge will succeed beyond their dreams and then some. He is a mentor of the highest degree

I’m surprised by the hire, but I’m not surprised someone of his (and his family’s) quality sought a place like Corvallis.

A big part of the false narrative the media projects (and we justly fight against) is that highly educated and highly motivated people find and land in Corvallis in their later years. And they come from everywhere. Fuck the “no diversity” label Negative Schnellie tries to foist on the town. There are world renown professionals in many many fields who settle there in relative obscurity… as is their choice.

I’m not going to get into it, but Eugene is a segmented discombobulation at best. There should be no wonder why the Ducks are so popular here. There’s nothing else worth writing home about that hasn’t had the life sucked out of it four years before you discover it.

      • I lived in Eugene for 7 years and my wife worked in Corvallis during that time. I enjoyed Eugene as a city because I was tired of the hassles of a big city and Eugene has enough of what we needed within a 5 or 10 minute drive but Corvallis was by far more appealing/attractive as a traditonal college town. The Ducks aren’t getting football recruits because of the city of Eugene, what Phil Knight’s money has done is created a city within a city and that’s what the players buy into. Obviously, it works.

    • In watching how BDC and Eddie Ray behaved yesterday, I am a little stunned that they were able to land GA. Thank God for whatever Barry Alvarez did to cause GA to get the hell out of Madison as soon as he saw an opening. I’m pretty sure that one of the main things that appealed to GA about OSU was that BDC will stay out of his way and let him coach.

    • Keeton plays like Ryan Katz. Wonder if he has graduated and is eligible for immediate transfer.

And I never figured out why Riley exiled Katz. I wonder if Katz was roommates with Jovan Stevenson or something.

    • 1) Appreciate the link. 2) Fifita has been committed for months. 3) Thomas is the most in-demand 3* LB that I’ve seen in recent memory. Auburn, Nebraska, Arkansas, Miami, etc, and obviously Wisconsin, are pursuing Thomas hard.

Thomas loves Andersen though, and Aranda is his primary recruiter. So I’d think if Aranda comes to OSU, then they’d have a better than average shot at Thomas.

    • The section where eggers pointed out Andersen tipped his hamd a little about assistant coaches. He mentions the guys he wants to bring in coached in a similar town to corvallis, and ealier he said corvallis was similar to Logan Utah. 4 of his assistants followed him to Wisconsin from Logan, so Eggers theorizes those 4 migght be coming.
The main mystery piece is offensive coordinator. Kerry thinks Andersen wants the Wisconsin pro style and go more spread option like he did at Utah state. His offensive coordinator at Utah State was Matt Wells. Sort of feels to me like he might ditch Ludwig and go hard after Wells.

      • Seems like every article out there now has someone directly or indirectly talking about the “lack of energy” surrounding the program in recent years…….we could see it, yet none of the local media could?

Nor could they get off of their asses and investigate it a little? Maybe venture an opinion piece on the obvious….quote an unnamed source, if they couldn’t get someone on record? Push a little harded to get a someone on record?

        False narrative, lazy journalism…indeed.

      • How much do PAC-12 coordinators makes? He’ll make 650,000 next season and has a 650,000 buyout at Utah State. I’m sure head coaching experience is more valuable to him than going back to being a coordinator.

        • Matt Wells is not/would not come to Oregon St as a coordinator. Utah St. is not an FCS type job anymore. He’s going to get a Power 5 coaching job sooner than later if he wants it.

    • thanks for the link. Lots of stuff to comment on here. In the order they present themselves.

“Andersen has physical presence.” This isn’t the be all and end all (viz., Chris Peterson at UW) but as many of us commented upon here the last half decade, Riley’s poor body language sent very negative signals to his colleagues and the bench.

Looks like Brennan and Brasfield have the best chance to hang on. Would be especially nice if Brennan did because he kept the OSU flag flying with recruits when St. Riley and his confidants bailed on the program. (Not that I wasn’t happy he left)

After committed an excusable gaffe with his Ducks in a row figure of speech, he showed mental agility with the EUG airport question; also a break with the recent past.

incentives for 8-9-10 wins. This reflects the level of success required to be a part of the national “conversation.” To get in the top 25 you need 8 or 9 wins; if you get 10 there’s a shot at a conference championship and/or the playoffs. DeCarolis seems to have a learned a lesson

  22. enjoyed how Andersen turned OSU’s “isolation” into a positive, good town, safe, without the distractions of a big city, students can focus on college. There are parents and kids who will appreciate this perspective.

I recall Stroughter(?) saying he walked the campus with his mother and they apparently looked at each other and said “You feel it?” They both apparently did, and felt “it” was just the right place.

Based on Andersen’s offensive and defensive views, it will be interesting to see how Nall ends up getting used; could be all over the place on offense or could play at LB/DE, or maybe even a true, thoughtful dual role of RB/LB.

The two fast OLBs that will be RFR I bet will see more time than they would have under Riley/Banker and they will develop faster.

Somebody (Angry?) mentioned that with this coaching staff, OSU could get to 6 wins and a bowl. This is a staff that would achieve real player development benefits with the extra practices a bowl affords a team, and the program would actually see those benefits the subsequent season.

Man the existing players have to be excited about this. Other than a few QBs who might be worried, I can’t imagine any players are truly down on this hire.

    • good point on Nall. ON this one I’m glad Riley redshirted him so that he gets four years of play under a competent coaching staff. I’m increasingly of a mind that of the two sins– (1) effort at recruiting (2) “coaching up” once recruits were on campus–of late the latter was worse. Which is to say, Riley could have, and should have done a better job of recruiting, but once those guys were here the failure to improve on the players native talent was more notable. one example: Caleb Smith.

      • Caleb Smith has NFL ability. Riley also wasted his redshirt year (2 catches). He did the same with Wheaton. Smith’s biggest problem is he plays soft and with a lot of fear (of being hit). Andersen should help toughen him up.

  23. Had to check what Dwight Jaynes was saying on CSNNW because I couldn’t believe how much he undersold OSU and Corvallis. He at least admitted he was wrong, with a caveat of course:

    “Yes, I was wrong.

I never saw anyone even close to Gary Andersen coming to Corvallis to coach Oregon State. I never thought anyone of that caliber would want to leave a big-time winning program such as Wisconsin to take that job at OSU. In my defense, I’m not sure anyone else who has been around college football for a while would have seen it coming, either…

I totally misjudged the possibility of the Beavers being able to attract a coach of this caliber. There are people who say that athletic director and former Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez may have been a problem for Badger coaches, given the quick departure of Bret Bielema prior to Andersen. But that really doesn’t matter at this point.

What matters now is that the Beavers have replaced Mike Riley with a high-quality football coach who appears to be a real winner.

And I was very wrong about the possibility of that happening.”

    • I underestimated his ability to mea culpa. He’s still an idiot for lazily riding the ignorant narrative that OSU ain’t all that. But he at least cowboys up and doesn’t give a non-apology apology.

Now I have to wonder how many excuses Riley and staff threw out there for their under-performance. I’m growing less and less fond of the legend of Saint Mikey.

      • I thought he was more balanced and reasonable when at P-T, maybe I am wrong about that. The things he writes at CSNNW seem like a departure from his earlier work.

        • That’s all I know of him, and he’s not written very much that has been correct about OSU or Corvallis. As well versed as he’s supposed to be about everything in the region, he seems to be blind to wide swaths of reality.

    • Schnell’s article doesn’t carry the explicit “mea culpa” that Jaynes’s did but it makes several important concessions–

“maybe Corvallis has more to sell than everyone–including me–gave it credit for”

interesting insight, which she scooped, that BDC consulted with Casey, Tinkle and Rueck. Loved Casey’s quote: “if we think we’re less than, then that’s what we’re going to be.” I always KNEW that this running down of Corvallis had to grate on Casey because of the obvious implication and possible effect on BASEBALL recruiting.

And then the coup de grace: Andersen’s “aggressive” vs. “lifeless team limping around Reser stadium.” Everyone on this site knew who was to blame for that: a worn out St. Riley.

I say this unqualifiedly: the Jaynes and Schnell articles here are major victories for the Angry Beav nation here on this web site; the tide has already turned on the faux narrative about Corvallis.

  24. I actually kinda like that poster. The orange down the middle looks like war paint. Plus it’s not just for him, there are lots of athletics posters with that stripe.

Everyone watched that press conference right? He said the word “Aggressive” about 90 times. And said it very aggressively. Big fan. Bringing intensity will be a nice change of pace.

    • The main problem with the striping is the scale and angle. The orange running right through his face, the headphones just outside the white…it looks like the work of a freshman journalism student new to photoshop.

If you were going to use the stripes, have them behind Andersen. You could fade them to transparency. Or put them behind him and an them for more dynamic composition.

But that’s just working with what they’ve produced there, which is obviously limited. If you have bad soup, making additions to it will only get you so far….

  25. GA seems like one who will not lead his team into the Civil War already beaten before the first snap. In fact, he seems to be one who will look to smash the *ucks in the face early and often. Love this hire.
I don’t post often, but I have been reading here for several years and glued to this site for the last ten days or so. Thanks for the resource Angry.

  26. Matt Wells for OC would be an Oregon State grand slam. Beavers could pay him 1.1 million which is almost a 90% increase over his current salary. Reunites with Andersen (They last went 11-2 together) and takes over as Head Coach in 2021 the year we open the brand new finished Reser Stadium.

      • it’s just wishful thinking, since i never thought we’d land a guy like andersen. now it feels like anything is possible. i think the only position Wells has been offered was the Tulsa job. Was just hoping the lure of working for a P5 conference team with the HC that gave him a spot last time might be a lure. Andersen seems like he could sell this program.
