I’ve been thinking how to handle these ignorant/lazy media members.

The best approach is probably to blacklist them all in terms of reading their content, but at the same time “Tweet” at them, showcasing to the world their ignorant viewpoints. That way we don’t give them any clicks or ad revenue while getting our message across.

Gary Andersen is supposed to be on Rome next week, so he’ll probably have a lot of good things to say, and that will destroy Rome’s lazy narrative. I don’t think the guy has ever been to Corvallis…he talks about in the same way he’d talk about the moon (i.e. some vague idea of what it might be like).

Also, I’m going to be using Twitter a lot to destroy the narrative and go right at these guys. Recommend me a good handle/hash for this cause, and follow me here.

        • and I loved every second of it. I really like Rome. I didn’t hear what he said about Corvallis yesterday, but he has always spoken highly of Oregon State before and always given props.

Will never forget this one. Might be somewhat bias to it because I got to know James pretty well when he was injured and knew how funny he was. Was crazy to see a classmate end up on Rome like this.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKZw_o7KY3c

          • no; he always spoke highly of Riley, not Oregon State. Riley was on Rome’s show often. He’s an analogue to that part of the fan base that were fans of Riley as much, if not more, than OSU. I’m not expecting anyone in the media to be a fan, but I do like to see critical minded journalism.

Let me offer another example. Two years ago Chris Childers, from Sirius XM visited Corvallis as an adjunct to his “campus tour” to Niketown. At the time he spoke glowingly of what a nice, if a bit quaint, town Corvallis was. On his show last night all he did was rag on OSU, its facilities, and Corvallis–a total buy-in to the Schnell/Goe/Jaynes narrative.

I’ll still listen to Childers. He can be rescued. I’ll read Gina and Connor’s stuff, but I will never click on Goe or Nemec again. Finally, if you notice, their “comments” sections are down dramatically.

  1. Clones, big news in Oragone…… Gary Anderson moving to Corvollis. ……..
    Clones, Anderson. ….. Not Wisconsin….. Hear that ….. Gary Anderson. …. Yes. ….. To Oragone. Not university of…. not mariota….. Not Nike……. Not uniforms….. Uniforms…. but Oragone State…… I’m speechless…… Can’t say anything…. No words…… Riley gone…… Riley……. Anderson there….. Anderson, Riley……. Oragone….. Clones……

  2. Need to start a new thread for Saturday’s game basketball against Mississippi State. Then one for the women’s Tuesday game against #6 North Carolina.

  3. The think that’s pissing me off the most is not the media who’s never set foot in Corvallis ragging on the town, facilities, university, fans, coaches, whatever… Even Goe, Canzano, Jaynes, Machado…etc. I don’t mind those people hating on Corvallis and saying it doesn’t measure up to Seattle, Berkeley, Eugene, Los Angeles, wherever.

The thing that really bothers me is these small minded Oregon State fans who have adopted and begun to parrot Mike Riley’s attitude that Corvallis is somehow flawed. That really pisses me off, because it’s likely that most Oregon State fans attended Oregon State or at least live in the area. They should know better. This place is amazing and you can definitely sell Corvallis to student athletes. There’s no need to settle.

I have a theory: Mike Riley actually hates Corvallis.

Despite all the bullshit about how he could bike to the stadium, drive his Prius around on a tank of gas all season, Dee could shop downtown, they liked some restaurant, blah, blah, blah…Mike saw Corvallis as the small hick town that his dad dragged him to when he was a kid. And he resented it.

To a certain extent, I get that attitude. I’m from a similar small town and I fucking hate it. I hate the kids I knew in high school who never left, who haven’t done anything with their lives. I hate the high unemployment, the people wasting their lives on drugs. I hate the socially conservative vibe. I hate the complete lack of motivation. My hometown is like an anchor that will drag you to the bottom of the ocean if you let it. I think that’s how Mike Riley sees Corvallis. I think Mike looks at Corvallis and says ‘How can I recruit a kid to this dump, I hate this place.’ I think that’s why he settles for 2 star kids nobody else wants. It’s easy. And those kids won’t mind being in such a shitty hick town.

I think Mike Riley thinks he’s too good for this place.

Worst of all, somehow, his bizarre attitude has rubbed off on fans.

    That shit pisses me off.

Corvallis is an incredibly cool college town. It’s nearly perfect for what it is. It’s not LA or Seattle. It’s not Tucson or Eugene. It’s a small, close knit, passionate community that about the university and cares about OSU athletics. The facilities are solid and getting better. The fanbase is passionate. The location is beautiful. To me, there’s a lot to sell about Corvallis and somehow, some of our fans have bought the bullshit about how Corvallis isn’t good enough.

    Fuck that bullshit.

You know what’s not good enough? Settling for shit coaches and allowing assholes who’ve never set foot in Corvallis, let alone on campus, to dictate the narrative of what this place is. What’s not good enough is letting these shitheads alter what you know to be true about this place.

I think Gary Andersen can sell this place to kids, I hope he can break through to fans who have been tainted with too much of Mike Riley’s bullshit.

    • Honestly? It’s getting people physically to campus.

As someone else mentioned in an earlier thread, you have to get them to Corvallis, and that’s the hardest part since even kids from Portland have to consciously come. Kids from California have to fly into PDX and travel a bit or Eugene which is limited. Grimble said that he didn’t even give OSU a chance but he got here and he loved it. Once they get here, they see the campus and how nice it is set up, the solid facilities, the atmosphere, the beauty of the area, and they would surely come away impressed. I know I was the first time I stepped onto campus, and this was AFTER having toured Ivy League campuses.

I’m conscious that there isn’t major scene activity happening every night, and we’re not quite up to the level of Stanford or Cal or UDub in academics (give it 20 years though, Oregon State is making some great strides). But Corvallis can be sold to athletes, there are PLENTY of kids who would love to play in a college town and be in a community. A lot that might want to play a bit further from home.

    • That’s an interesting theory, but I think he did love it. He could have had other jobs and left if he hated it that much.

The think that’s pissing me off the most is not the media who’s never set foot in Corvallis ragging on the town, facilities, university, fans, coaches

Really? That bothers me a lot. The ones who haven’t been there should preface it with “I’ve heard Corvallis is bad” instead of “Corvallis is bad.” I really doubt Rome has been there.

      • I get that they hate what they have never experienced.

People who’ve been to OSU apologizing for Riley’s lack of recruiting effort by saying ‘well, you can’t recruit to Cornvalley.’ That’s annoying.

And my statement that Riley hates Corvallis may be a bit over the top, but I think he felt like he could never sell the place to kids.

        • I really hate when people think the “Cor” in Corvallis has something to do with agriculture. It’s root is latin for “heart”. The name Corvallis literally translates to “heart of the valley”

      • That is what was most annoying about the hacks – you gotta love Riley, you won’t get anybody else, why can’t you accept your fate, athletes don’t want to come to Corvallis – they should have spewed put nonsense on the opinion page.

I also don’t understand Goe and Nemec responding to comments with even more opinions. Is that commonly done?

    • So you grew up in Portland?

Seriously, a good “take ” as we know, it takes a village to raise a football team. at some point, the younger alums will need to buy into the new narrative of OSU is a destination where ideas/teams are built, not where your parents went to retire.

    • Riley was born in Wallace, Idaho and came to Corvallis from Moscow, Idaho where his dad was an assistant to Dee Andros at UI.

Compared to Moscow, Corvallis is a Metropolis.

  4. Ive said here many times I was born and raised in LA ( long beach suburbs to be exact) and I loved Corvallis pretty much instantly as did all other So cal kids who came up to visit. its everything a College town should be (minus the dumb ass cops) this narrative is getting out slowly.. Im hoping with the new regime this sentiment grows even more. Rileys poor recruiting were blamed on Corvallis when really it was just his inability to close which is most likely a direct result of him being way too nice.

Could you even imagine Riley challenging a new recruit to not make excuses man up and come to Corvallis??? I suspect that with better recruiting classes the narrative will start changing into more of “Corvallis is a great college town” just like every other non major metro team that competes every year.

  5. Lindsey hates Corvallis because there are no buffets

Ken hates Corvallis because it doesn’t smell like Phil knights ass sweat

Dwight hates Corvallis because he’s a senile old fuck

  6. My only regret about boycotting the Oregonian us that I miss reading Gina’s stuff. She actually does a pretty good job despite the incompetence around her.
    #ChangeTheNarrative

  7. Come off it…. the media hates Corvallis because it aint UO. UO hit the big time and we didnt. UO plays for national titles and we cant get to a Rose bowl. UO makes the state proud! We dont….

Riley got his love from the media, by first, saving us (in the story anyway) from the 28 yr streak. Then he got us respectable, going to a bunch of bowl games. Somewhere along that line he got the big rep of doing more with less. My own theory is he doesnt work hard at recruiting, as he was in the earlty days able to have winning seasons with what he got. Now he coasts and uses the excuse, well cultivated, that its hard to recruit to Corvallis. And Riley the good guy savior is the darling of the media, never closes his practices, etc… lists the many excuses and is excused by the media.

Corvallis is a paradise, compared to a lot of college football towns. The whole damn midwest, for instance, has no mountains, no skiing, no coast line, etc etc. Nor does southern California have anything scenic to write home about. A wasteland, really. If you cant recruit to Corvallis, you cant recruit anywhere.

    • It’s annoying that Rome takes anonymous calls about Corvallis amd a guy can spout off about the campus being terrible, or having half of its classrooms on wheels, or that the whole place smells like manure. All lies, but nobody points that out. Instead, the uninformed listener hears that and it leaves a lasting impression. What kid wants to even visit a town after hearing that? classrooms on wheels? Does osu even have a single classroom in a trailer? I dont remember any. and the campus is freaking beautiful….all year…
In the summer time during fall camp, Corvallis is one of nicer places to be in the country. The weather is perfect, you live an hour from the mountains and the coast. You have unlimited outdoors activities.
Fuck the media for sabotaging us.

  8. For any of you degenerates awake at this hour, new head coach Gary Andersen will be on Mike and Mike in the morning at 4:30 pacific time. The radio show is on espn radio and also broadcasts live on espn2. I’ll recap when it’s over

      • Yes I rewound the dvr and watched. Nothing really to take of it. Was very complimentary of Wisconsin, viewed the OSU job as a good opportunity, had no issues working with Barry Alvarez, plans to recruit the west coast but primarily get started in state (Oregon) and branch out to California, Texas, Florida and Utah. They’ve had success recruiting in Utah. He also mentioned recruiting Arizona JC’s.

        • When asked about the salaries for assistants he said “I’m not going to bash on Wisconsin”

The bottom line is he was looking because he wanted to take care of his crew of assistants.

          • Both Ludwig and Aranda made 480K this last season. Banker was getting 505K from OSU. So, comparable. Pellum and Frost are only getting 400K from the ducks

Wisky forked out 2.368 Million for entire staff. OSU was right behind them at 2.347

            http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/football/assistant

            9. Wisky

9th out of 14 teams. There could be some truth to it I suppose

          • Oregon State PAC-12 Trent Bray $154,500 — $154,500 $16,667
            Oregon State PAC-12 Brent Brennan $180,264 — $180,264 $16,667
            Oregon State PAC-12 Chris Brasfield $180,264 — $180,264 $16,667
            Oregon State PAC-12 Joe Seumalo $185,400 — $185,400 $16,667
            Oregon State PAC-12 Rodney Perry $231,756 — $231,756 $16,667
            Oregon State PAC-12 Mike Cavanaugh $275,004 — $275,004 $16,667
            Oregon State PAC-12 Bruce Read $315,000 — $315,000 $26,667 $2,347,200
            Oregon State PAC-12 John Garrett $320,004 — $320,004 $36,667 $2,347,200
            Oregon State PAC-12 Mark Banker $505,008 — $505,008 $26,667 $

          • I think we can all agree that Banker, Read and Cavanaugh’s combined salaries was a waste of almost 1.1 million. #goodriddance

          • Fuck I guess.

I’m still in coach Perry’s corner. His resume is legit, and the dbacks have generally been a strength since he’s been here.

          • I went back and listened to it again. He didn’t say Utah. He mentioned recruiting JC’s in Florida, California, Texas and Arizona which he had trouble doing at Wisonsin

    • Yeah, when I moved from graduate school in SLC to Maryland, I told my told boss I was looking forward to seafood again. He was suprised and said “Really? When I visited the west coast I had some really good seafood.” Thinking Utah is west coast is like thinking Illinois is east coast.

  9. I had an employee that was born and raised on Maui, visited nw schools and went to OSU because he loved campus and town vibe. Money was not an issue either, his father would’ve paid for him to go anywhere and was even leaning on him to go to Seattle or LA schools.

  10. I don’t know if there’s a problem with you using “OregonState,” but if not but here’s a few before running off to work:

    #DispelOregonStateLies

Active verb, keeps “Oregon State” in the title. Broad enough for non-football aspects of OSU, Corvallis. Mission of your effort and the title are the same. Emphasizes Oregon State.

    #TrueOregonState

Keeps Oregon State in the title, implies correction of lies, false narrative regarding OregonState.

Or you, put the lazy journalists in a negative light:

#QuitBeingRiley’sBikeSeat – Mike did enjoy an easy ride from the journalism crowd…casual, no hill climbs. More like coasting down an easy grade. Wheeeee. A little too Riley specific and off target. Symbolism and sarcasm probably lost on stupid, lazy journalists.

    #Don’tPublishIfYouDon’tThink – Direct. Long….

    #Don’tThink?Don’tPublish!

#ThinkBeforeYouPublish – Active verb, speaks to corrective action.

    #LazyMedia was a good one

Hell, I’m going to be late….

  11. Coach Andersen on Mike and Mike this morning. Spoke very well about the pluses of Oregon State, rather than the minuses of Wisconsin. Also spoke highly about Corvallis.

I like that he laid out an aggressive recruiting plan, and how he loves the challenge of competing with the ucks. Believes in “starting in your own state.”

I really like that he mentioned how important it was to him to meet with his former players, and that he took the time to meet with them as a team, and also allow them to see him individually.

    http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=12018980

    • I love the in-state focus. Some good talent is getting passed over by the UO. Own the in-state recruits. I assume that scholarships for in-state players are better for the AD due to lower tuition.

Does anyone think that any UO fans have a smidge of OSU envy with this hire? At least probably some stunned silence.

I like OSU’s past approach as a blue-collar, lunch pail team. Tough, not-too flashy, etc.

    • thanks for the link. Andersen sounds energetic, coherent (unlike Riley the natterer); plus a class guy. He stuck around for a day to have one on ones with the players that wanted that; something St. Riley deigned not to do. My theory that the reasons he left Wisconsin (in no particular order)
      a) he wants to make a reputation for building a program in a major conference; Alvarez will always be credited for doing that at Wisconsin and coaches following him are merely stewards of someone else’s legacy; (b) also Alvarez related, he may have deduced that OSU is a prospect for becoming an athletic director when that day in his career comes; (c) he’s a small town guy; when I visited Madison for the game a few years ago I was surprised at how it looked a good sized city; (d) I think he likes the challenge of taking on Oregon right in their back yard; (e) maybe he wanted to be at a school that has a baseball team.

    • Thanks for the link. A couple of thoughts:

      1. Angry’s post about Andersen contacting OSU first made sense, but I noticed he said OSU started contacting him. Surprised (happily) BDC thought that big.
      2. He basically tries to debunk all the rumors for why he left Wisconsin, but never states why he actually left. Oh well, doesn’t matter.
      3. Sounds motivated, down to earth, and a good fit for OSU. We’ll see.

  12. Maybe Bobby D does has some fire still left in him after-all:

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/243517-111003-mike-riley-gut-wrenching-decision-to-leave-oregon-state-bittersweet-

The Riley-De Carolis meeting, it would seem, did not go well.

Three sources told me that De Carolis wanted to eliminate multiyear contracts for Beaver assistant coaches — something Riley had fought hard for in recent years — and also wanted to renegotiate Riley’s deal to pare the years remaining down from seven.

I asked Riley Wednesday if those were factors in his departure. He deflected the question, confirming the meeting but declining to explore what was discussed.

  13. So do we have an agreed upon hashtag?

Found this gem from Machado. We need to twitter back

Angie Machado ?@AngieMachado1 10m10 minutes ago

Life in Oregon all winter! RT @insidetroy: It is coming down hard at #USC football practice right now.

  14. I don’t know if Riley hated Corvallis, I suspected that he didn’t. However, I think he stopped selling Corvallis. Riley gave up too many times. He gave up on the recruiting trail when a recruit would tell him he wanted a bigger city. He gave up when he got pounded by teams in the first half. He gave up on the run when he got behind. He gave up on his QB (Katz). He gave up on his running back if he dropped the ball.

Riley is a nice guy he is not going to run up the score, or steal somebodys recruit. So when he has to answer why is tough to recruit to OSU from the media, he doesn’t take the blame but blames the city/environment.

When RIley came back for his second stint, he had a good recruiting class (now it was filled with some fliers and kids who didn’t make it), but after those few years he gave up on trying to go after those big recruits.

  15. With Gary Andersen I don’t expect any losses to WSU, Cal, or Colorado in “Our House” as Ray so eloquently called it
Arizona, ASU, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Utah and UW will need to bring their “A” game. Hopefully Andersen changes the culture enough to make the Civil War fun for Oregon State fans again.

    Can’t wait for Andersen’s 1:30 press introduction.

  16. How about a volleyball thread? A sweet 16 appearance today vs Stanford. Would be a big upset if they won. Nice to see the other sports doing making runs in the NCAAs.

    • I kindof like the #LazyMedia or #LazyJournalism only because it points out they’re just going through the motions and not really trying to bring their readers the true story. Just my 2 cents.

      • I like Lazymedia, too. I was debating between the two, but I think stale narrative is more a jab and has more “depth” than lazymedia. Maybe I’ll use both if I can fit them in. For now I’m going with #StaleNarrative

    • or you could just go with the blatantly obvious and use one of these fine examples…….

      #You’reAnIdiot
      #GodGaveYouABrainButYouFailToUseIt
      #YourMomLikesGoldenShowers
      #ItRainsMoreInYourMomsBedroomThanCorvallis

On 2nd thought go with yours

    • Someone suggested TrueOregonState. I like that. Or just TrueOSU to meet tweet length limits. It sort of sounds like something you would pay a marketing firm to come up with to change the false image.

Certainly better than anything our marketing department would come up with.

  17. Interesting comment on P-O says that Bobby D had called Gary Andersen just to ask him about Matt Wells, and that’s when Andersen expressed his own interest in the job.

    • Pipe dream, but would love to have Wells come in as a coordinator under Andersen again. I know it would never happen, but just wondering if it’s better to be a head coach in the Mountain West than to be a coordinator in the Pac-12? My guess is the HC job will always trump the coordinator job, but it seems like there would be more exposure in the Pac-12 to help further his career. To many, Matt Wells is a on a similar plane with Scott Frost.

  18. Oregon State: Keegan Andersen, Gary Andersen’s oldest of three sons, is joining the staff as a grad assistant. Also, per source DFO Jason Thomas and recruiting coordinator Vince Guinta (both from Wisconsin) will be joining Andersen in Corvallis.

  19. Do you think in today’s press conference the press will continue with the “Why OSU/Why Corvallis?” theme? Part of it is the rhetoric they buy into, part of it is fishing for some negative statements on the place Andersen just left.

I’ll bet he handles it well.

  20. Haha……they should have saved ink and stopped after the second comma.

Nebraska: As part of his bonus structure, Mike Riley will receive: $150,000 for appearing in a bowl game (not included as part of College Football Playoff) with the Huskers, $250,000 for appearing in any College Football Playoff Bowl game, $300,000 for appearing in the College Football Playoff semi-final game, $350,000 for appearing the College Football Playoff National Championship, and $650,000 for winning the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

  21. Tinkle with great stuff on JoeBeav says he is gonna be tweeting “Oregon State?..Damned Straight” in response to comments which down play OSU.

  22. “if you’re not fighting to win a national championship, to go out and win the civil war…then you’re in the wrong business” – Gary Andersen

  23. Using your roster in ways to maximize output. Now there’s a novel idea. “If we have 4 outstanding receivers we need to get them on the field at the same time as much as possible”

  24. Steve P said that maybe it wasn’t Mike Riley but just the times that made the last few years so tough. He had a conversation with a buddy that said, “I’m tired of talking about the Giant killers, I want us to be the Giant.”

  25. James Pensyl ?@jamespensyl 5m5 minutes ago

Coach Andersen wants to win. We are all on the same page! #gobeavs!

Also, saw a conversation between Fifita and Ulu-Perry. Apparently Fifita is one of the recruits visiting today and he has committed to Andersen. Sounds like Ulu-Perry might be interested too, which would be a great flip considering last week nobody thought he would come here.

  26. I LOVE this guy!. Hes everything I want in a coach, and none of the things I hated about Riley.

    1. I wanted to come here. (opportunity, not just a job)
    2. Every athlete represents the program at all times, be aware of your surrounding (accountability)
    3. We are going to be a defensive minded program.
    4. We are going to use the personnel we have to the best of THEIR ability (adapt the program to the kids, not the kids to the program).
    5. This IS a special place! Corvallis is a positive, not a negative.

    #changethenarrative

  27. Another negative Goe article out. The guy seriously hates OSU. I’m going to post on all his article like this:

    BeaverBill just now

“The Beavers came across as a little too desperate to celebrate victory.”

You comments about OSU and the community it resides in continue to be rude. You are always so negative when writing about the Beavs… please just spot writing anything about OSU.

“he embraces Corvallis for all the things critics have used against it.” – and you are definitely one big critic.
