I’m curious to hear what people think the penalty should be. This is what I wrote in the basketball thread:

Despite the scoring, he has to be kicked off the team. WT’s first tough decision. Let’s see what he does. As a fan I’d like to see Robbins stick on the team, but I don’t see how you can do that as a coach and not imply there are different rules for different players and/or basketball players are above the law.

I think he has to go. And the positives are the Beavs have already exceed expectations (icing on the cake here on out), are playing well without him, and have a great class coming in, so they won’t need him next year. I think the signing of Noah Toaigi under a football scholarship makes him more dispensable, too. Tinkle basically gets Noah as a walk-on.

  1. I don’t know the exact situation, other than he was arrested for DWI? Arrested doesn’t mean guilty, though for DWI it’s very likely. If the evidence is strong, I say cut him loose already. Otherwise, due process and all that.

    • according to the article I won’t link he consented to a field sobriety test and failed. Also blew a .13. I’d say he’s pretty well fucked. At first I was all for kicking him to the curb. IMO, let him stay on the team but he is indefinitely suspended and needs to get into treatment or help for whatever the hell he’s doing. He’s not only fucking over the team, he’s pissing away his life. Dude doesn’t understand the golden opportunity that he is pissing away. This is his third incident in just over a year.

  2. Or suspend him for the rest of the year, to be reevaluated again in the fall, all depending on how he does between now and then. How about that?

  3. Dude was already suspended twice. I don’t know what you have to do to get hit with a ten game suspension but I doubt it was showing up late for practice. Whether he sits for the remainder or gets booted I suppose depend on what the two previous issues were but really they should cut him loose.

  4. I posted this to the game thread. Others responded there.

Robbins should be suspended indefinitely (it would look really bad to bring him back this season–something the UO would do/does. But I believe in redemption. If he cleans up, is a good student, changes, then maybe he has a place on the team. If he is kicked off, he could start a spiral and may end up in jail forever. Rehab time.

If Robbins is not a fucked up violent person (like assault and sexual assault), then it is an opportunity for Tinkle to help. Nothing better than being part of a group to help with that.

  5. Like I said before, last year it was apparently for weed, the 10 game isn’t for substances from who I’ve talked to, and this time is a DUII. So three different offenses, but the kicker to me is that one of those is nested into another since he couldn’t even behave during the season WHILE suspended, and he put others’ lives in danger, all the while being underage still.

He has to at the bare minimum be suspended for the rest of the year, and show progress off the court both in passing classes and not engaging in these activities that get him in trouble. Essentially he’d be on probation until 2015-16 basketball season.

He’s really let his team down, and they probably win a game or two more with him in the lineup plus one more going forward. Like the first game against UDub we needed another scorer, and also Arizona State his style matched up better when we were struggling.

It’s just so foolish that he’s pissing away his chances to do something great. He’s got immense talent, likely a future pro overseas, and this was his big shot to show his worth when we have guys like Togiai, Thompson, Tinkle, Eubanks, Rakocevic, Bruce all coming in wanting minutes. Jarmal has stepped up, Cheikh had a good game filling in today, Vic is really not doing what he needs to be doing.

  6. Suspend him from the team until the end of the season. Then, if he improves his behavior and conduct, maybe he can be let back on. If he doesn’t improve, keep him off the team.

  7. It was reported that Robbins was participating in practices during his 10 game suspension; brings up the question going forward if he is not kicked off the team.
Three strikes is bad enough, and exacerbated by, as “thatguy” said, the fact that the last two were “nested”.
Tinkle has a lot on his plate and a difficult decision to make. If he tries to re-hab this guy it might help if he was allowed to continue practicing. At a minimum, no more playing time this year and a very short leash. If Tinkle’s judgement is that he has become a distraction then being kicked completely off the team seems justifiable.

A big part of the question is just how much does a HC owe someone with this track record.

  8. Beavs up to 68th in RPI

Also a shout out to the ladies team. 11-1 and all alone in first place. 3 of the last 4 home games have significant importance as they are against ASU (10-2), Cal (10-2) and Stanford (9-3). Win 2 of those and they should be Pac-12 champs. They should have no problems on the last road trip. Utah and Colorado are awful.

    • Was there some detail in the handbook about offenses in multiple “categories”? I’m assuming this is his first DUI or we would have heard something. If the discipline guidelines are followed to the letter it sounds like his first two offenses were maybe for MIP’s…..minimum one game suspension and then a 30% suspension. I guess I’m asking if it’s 3 strikes total or 3 strikes in one category? Can you have a DUI without a MIP?

I hope he get’s help, but also it’s interesting that he had no issues his Sophomore season or else maybe he just didn’t get caught. I’m kind of on the fence about kicking him off or seeing if he can work his way back next year.

      • I’m assuming it’s three strikes overall. I don’t feel like he should be dismissed but he did have chances and he wasted them all.

  9. The other aspect is setting the culture and expectations. Usually the first offender in a new coaching regime gets more severe punishment to set an example. Since this is his third time, he will be a goner.

  10. he’s wasting a scholarship. He should be dismissed from the team and allowed to get back in the pool with everyone else trying to get a bball scholarship. Tinkle will do the right thing and we are winning without him. Time to reiterate the standard and show other players and potential players that you are gonna do it the right way at Oregon State or you are gonna find another program.

  11. I think he’s done. If this is the code he signed up for, the athletic dept should follow through. Not sure that Tinkle has much say in the process.

    • This could be true. There might be a little leeway since it’s the second incident under Tinkle, not the third. But it’s hard to tell other athletes they can slide when, if for any reason, we let Robbins slide.

On the one hand, I’d like to let Tinkle have a chance to save the kid, as would be his prerogative as the new coach. On the other, he signed up for and broke the rules in place.

  12. I can confirm that Riley was in Corvallis over the weekend. We saw him at Block 15 Sunday evening. Maybe he has had second thoughts and wants his old job back?

The only other reasons for him to be back in town would be:

1.) Help Rod Perry move to assisted living facility.
    2.) Give BDC a good-bye wedgie.
3.) Retrieve a case of Juicy Fruit gum from his old office that the movers missed.
4.) Attend grandchild Stevenson’s birthday party, punch his dad.
5.) Stand grinning in the rain at Reser one last time.

    • Is Block 15 that restaurant that’s just across the bridge whose name I can’t remember?

Ftr… the food there is decent, not great. I like the Alpha. I was disappointed with the Nebulas. The place is a little crammed, as in tight quarters. But the service is always excellent. I only go there when requested by the other party.

It’s possible I’m a creature of comfort though. I end up at Squirrel’s most often. So I know service isn’t my priority… since Julian gives me a ration of shit every time I sit down in front of him… going on 25 years now.

I never asked, but do they sell that “SLOW” sign with the peacock on one side and the squirrel on the other? Those were the days… that and walking home down the RR tracks.

    • He owns 2 houses in Corvallis and his wife is still here most of the time. Could be that they are packing up stuff for the move. I was at Flat tail yesterday and it was confirmed he was there having dinner with his wife like it was posted here a few days ago.

      • Of course, to make the shoe fit… the returning hero would need to see his adversary, whose deceiving mistress is a nun, die on the battlefield.

So I’m pretty sure that is a very small sample.

  13. I think they should kick him off the team, but he can stay enrolled at the University if he completes Alcohol/Drug dependency classes in addition. If he wants to play somewhere else let him transfer. Doesn’t matter if we are winning games or not, he has hurt the program and himself.

Its really unfortunate, he is going down a path many young men do, and it never ends well. I hope he can get help and learn from his experiences.

  14. Concerning Robbins, according to the post above it looks like the handbook is clear. But more important as a coach do you want a distraction on the team. Third time is a charm, get rid of the distraction.

    • Would this be a Vernon Adams situation where he could play right away if enrolled in a Graduate program?

I wonder why Oregon wouldn’t pursue Keeton over Adams…

      • maybe because it was unknown he’d get another year of eligibility until now? I am unsure if Keeton has completed his degree at USU. I tried doing some interwebs research but failed

          • then he cannot transfer without sitting out a year. But, if he graduates at the end of spring, then I believe he could transfer and be eligible immediately just as Russel Wilson. Something about a graduate program his current school does not offer. Honestly I think Keeton just stays at USU

          • Utah state has 2 guys who played well as starters last year besides Keeton, as well as Damion Hobbs who redshirted last year after transferring from Oregon. They have some serious depth at Qb. cant find any info on Keeton’s graduation status, but being in school for 4 years would make him likely due to graduate this spring.
Baldwin did say he sees a more athletic version of Keeton in Seth Collins. Why not have Keeton show him how the system works?

      • When Keeton initially enrolled at USU, his proposed major was Aeronautical Engineering. I don’t know if he stayed with that major , but he is still a smart kid. He has had a very interesting career though he has had major injuries that will limit his ability to run in the future. However, running and option really are not his deal. He was not,is not, never was a true read option qb. He is a field general that makes few mistakes, and is able to take off and run when needed. When Turbin and Williams were at USU, they ran way more than Keeton. Oregon would seem to be a poor stylistic fit for Keeton.

        • I keep reading over and over that Keeton is not scheduled to graduate until December. I don’t know why this Albright guy would spread rumors that just are not plausible unless Keeton has done something drastic with his academics and he’s not telling anyone! Maybe he’s taking a “reverse Peko” course and it endlessly gives him credits online.

  15. Hey GUYS!

Just wanted to thank u for this artcle bc I fwd ur responces to bdc about keeping me on. I appreciate it but feel it can represent how fans feel.

Look y’all, I’m sorry. I could show y’all exactly what happened but long story I guess. Anyways just wanna get back in the “GOOD GRACES” and try to keep my scholarship.

My mom still don’t know about the DUI thing so I’m hoping I don’t lose my scholarship 2. Besides this lawyer they got me is from Portland and really good with high profile DUI. Dude even got a church! The truth will come out.

I ain’t leaving this team or nobody! I wanted to be on the bench last night but guess I can’t now!!

I’ll learn my lessons the hard way and use this fuel! I always knew the lord would challendge me and I will keep fighting and praising Jesus, the one true judge of what is write and wrong!!!!

        • “The main thing we’re trying to accomplish is to set the standard for the Coach Andersen era,” Simon said. ” … What I told the guys is what we do, it’s like a house, and strength’s the foundation of that house. The foundation only needs to be so big, but it needs to be so strong, as well.

          ———

Combine that with players saying they like GA more than Andersen…you can read between the lines. Riley a big softy. I bet his workout program was “do what you want” lol

        • Wow, third player to bash Riley:

In all, the workout takes about an hour and 10 minutes to complete. But the tempo within that time frame is what Woods, a senior running back, cites as the biggest difference between this winter program and the ones under Riley’s staff.

“It’s rigorous,” Woods said. “It’s more like a cardio. We’re lifting heavy and lifting fast. With the runs, we’re competing. It’s way more competition with everything, as it should be … That’s how you get the best out of everybody, in my opinion.”

  16. For all the hoops fans, BTN has a show called A Taste for Coaching with Seth Davis. It is with some very accomplished coaches sitting and eating in a group and discussing topics related to college hoops. Most of the guys have some tie in to the B1G, but not all. Last nights installment included Larry Brown. Highly recommended for CBB fans. One interesting thing is how virtually all say that the basic skill level for the players has gone down hill. I know that has discussed ad nauseum on this blog.

  17. Regarding the Keeton rumors, this SBnation blogger has updated his story saying Keeton isn’t scheduled to graduate until December, although he still doesn’t sound very sure about that statement.
    http://www.mwcconnection.com/2015/2/10/8010419/could-chuckie-keeton-transfer-to-oregon-state#comments

First, Keeton needs to graduate from Utah State to be able to freely transfer. As of now he is not scheduled to graduate until December, so unless something changes with an extra workload or changing to a different major a transfer likely can’t happen.

@AggieUp I just assumed in first draft since he is entering fifth year, but was initially wrong. Assuming is not good

  18. In bracketology predictions, the women’s team is projected as a #2 seed. Beating ASU will go a long ways in securing a high seed. Likely a 2 or 3 seed and hosting the first two rounds.

The men’s team is on the far end of the bubble.
