Kind of ridiculous and worthy of a thread itself.

I don’t make excuses  and have high expectations, but also they need to be reasonable expectations given a situation. What I see:

  • Beavs constantly play 5 vs 4 (no viable big), and of the 4 the put on the court, only 1 (Payton) might start for another Pac-12 team (He would probably start for Colorado and that’s it).
  • Starters playing too many minutes
  • Craig Robinson left the cupboard pretty bare.
  • They have a shooting guard playing point guard.
  • They have walk-ons giving between 5 and 10 minutes per game.
  • Robbins suspended, several transfers, etc.
  • Reid has a heart problem that limits his minutes

Despite all that, they have won 8 games in conference play, 17 wins overall, and have the #15 recruiting class in the nation coming in.

Yet, fans are whining about Wayne Tinkle. It is just an embarrassing moment for this site, and I want to explain to new readers and intelligent readers that those views do not represent the views of the site’s author.

My view: great season given all the above, and obviously a team on fumes since the 2nd Arizona State game. Future looks bright with the class coming in. They could be very good next year depending how quickly the freshman develop, but even if they take a full year to develop, they’ll at least bring valuable depth. After watching their film and seeing their dad’s coach, I think Tinkle and Thompson will be good from the get go. I’m not sure about the other 3 (Gligoride Rankocevic, on film, looks a bit slow and clumsy and doesn’t play with passion, but that can change), but with Bruce it will be nice to get a true point guard into the program. They also got a free player in Noah Togiai, who will replace and be a huge upgrade over a current a walk-on.

For those who are on the ledge, watch these videos on Tinkle and the incoming class:

I’m seriously questioning the AB fanbase. Are we rational and have high but realistic expectations, or are we completely insane and expect wins no matter the situation a coach walks into? Riley actually cost the Beavers games; that is why I was all over him. Tinkle is winning the Beavers games he shouldn’t. I don’t understand, other than typical emotion/fandom clouding your perspective. It makes me worry for Gary Andersen, too. I think he can maybe win 5 or 6 games, but say he wins 3 or 4. Are we going to have to listen to this nonsense that Andersen is terrible, yada yada? People should take this slow period to research or just admit that rebuilding and coaching transitions take a year at least, but maybe two to three as the coach gets his guys into the system and they all gel/mature together. That’s the process. A great example is the women’s basketball team or Gary Anderson at Utah State. Look at those progressions. Those are normal blueprints for a great coach changing things. It takes time. Stop with the girly emotional crap and whining about, what is reality, an amazing season. I seriously think CR goes 0-18 in conference play. No doubt in my mind.

  1. Thanks for the spirited defense of Tinkle, angry. I’m happy we’re in the NIT discussion at all, given that we were expected to finish dead last in the conference.

If we make the NIT, I would call the season a resounding success.

  2. Add me to the Tinkle Train :-D

But I disagree on GP2, he’d start at more P12 schools than just Colorado, if the coaches are smart.

  3. Imo the MF’ers who are complaining about WT are either folks who are pissed because CR got fired; adolescents; ‘uck fans who are trying to cause trouble or just folks who are batshit crazy.

    JMO

P.S. And they can go FUCK THEMSELVES!

    • I don’t think it’s any of that; I think it’s all the emotional crap of fandom.

PS. There are many Riley loves lingering, but I don’t know of many/any CR lovers. Seriously who is pissed CR was fired? Those Riley lovers are just waiting for GA to win 3 games to say “see told you so”. That will be a frustrating period if it happens, but no doubt GA is a huge upgrade over Riley.

      • “… I don’t know of many/any CR lovers….”

I’m wondering if a very visible CR lover is A.C.. How many games did he attend this year?

And I’m figuring there are many others out there.

        • Strange thing because CR was a horrible coach, and I’m not sure what there was to love. I literally did not watch a basketball game for 1.5 years because of his [lack of] coaching. Not sure about AC Green or what’s up in his life allowing or preventing him from attending games, but if he thinks CR was a good coach he’s insane in the membrane.

  4. We would be a complete team with me on the floor! I can guard all 5 spots and can light it up from the floor just as good as anyone in the country!!!

I probably have the most versatile skill set of any player anywhere and nobody is on par with my athleticism!!!!

    • You know, I don’t totally disagree with you. The real Victor Robbins was starting to come into his own. I think a lot of the offense struggles started with his suspension. The offense really looked so much better when he was an option. That DePaul game was a thing of beauty.

  5. I’ve called out several people when they’ve made posts criticizing Tinkle and the lack of road wins during this Pac-12 slate. It’s unfathomable that anyone could find something to complain about after the job he’s done. In a couple of years if he has a team of his own guys and they’ve regressed, then complain.

    • Yeah, I think it’s Duck trolls knowing what the future has in store when Tinkle’s players get here and Altman’s transfer well runs dry.

  6. I thought CR did a really nice job his first year because he somehow figured out the talent available and had a system where they could be a little more competitive that what Jay John had going, but he was a chamleon on strategy and tactics after that. I think Tinkle has his system and just doesn’t have the players yet. It would have been fascinating to see Tinkle here one year earlier!

BTW, CR is a lousy analyst if you’ve ever caught an ESPN game of his. Vague and cliched, just like his coaching style!

    • I saw the two Purdue-Rutgers games CR did, and it might have been my own confirmation bias, but what I saw was CR making decent observations on individual play, and he also had done some research which is more than I can say for others. Like his coaching, he lacked observations about the 10 guys on the court at once, i.e. x’s and o’s stuff. Unlike when Bobby Knight did some games (cringe). He had some really great insights, which was a reflection of his coaching skills.

  7. Craig Robinson had a bit of success his first year too, winning games with a cast of players that largely had no business playing basketball at the D-I level, much less in the Pac-10/12. Not criticizing Tinkle, just waiting to see how things progress in years 2 and 3. Would also like to see how decent a class he can recruit without having the fortune of having highly-touted sons of the coaching staff to headline it.

  8. I think the season has even surprised Tinkle! I know it did most of us. Early on Tinkle would only say that the team would play hard and try to be in every game. He, and the team, have far exceeded that statement. I got caught up when they were in the 4-way tie for third dreaming about the what ifs. What if they can win out, what if they make the NCAA, what if, etc., etc., etc. Personally, I am absolutely thrilled with the place OUR TEAM is at! .

Somewhere along the way I heard someone say that the players had something to prove after CR was fired, some players left and the pundits said – last place Pac-12 and maybe 4-5 wins on the year. That has to be a big part of what has happened. Of course GP2 deciding to stay after CR was let go has made a HUGE difference!

I am excited about the future of Beaver basketball! I never expected the team to be in this position after ONE YEAR with a new coach. What will it be like in 5 years? Will Tinkle create a team like Rueck has? Let’s at least give him a chance.

  9. The season is a resounding success, NIT or no NIT. What the coaching staff did, with so little to do it with, is remarkable. And there is help on the way.

Meanwhile, the fan-attendance disaster that Craig Robinson had created, is blown away. The home win streak and overachievment by this team has the fans turning out. Interest is UP. Imagine for a second what would be going on if Robinson were still here!

Given the talent available, a winning season is … FANTASTIC! Great going, coaches and team!

  10. If I recall correctly Coach Tinkle said on the coaches show Tuesday night they would not consider anything below the NIT this year. Anyone else hear that entire conversation with Mike Parker Tuesday night?

        • Oregon won 73-70. They’re in the NCAA tourney at this point. Stanford finishes at ASU and Arizona so they may not win another game. Also Oregon locked up 3rd place. They could finish in 2nd if they win the civil war and Utah somehow manages to stumble against either of the Washington schools. Much still to play for, save for 1st and last place which are already locked up. Arizona already has the title (they won’t lose at home to Stanford or Cal) and USC will finish in last (they aren’t going to beat UCLA at Pauley either).

  11. only thing I’ve whined about was officiating on the road. Thursday night at Maples was evident. From what I saw today, not so much. A 22-2 Cal run pretty much did them in on their own. That said, I don’t care what anyone else thinks. I think they can win the civil war Wednesday night. The good news is they’ll have a week before the Pac-12 tournament starts to heal and rest. I don’t expect them to win the tournament but I expect they will get out of the first round this year. This team has already surpassed my expectations so it’s a success in my book. No matter how it ends

  12. Ducks beat Stanford. Beavers beating them now gets us right around the NIT bubble. In the conversation and would surely be in with any Pac-12 tourney win as well. Without a Pac-12 win we better not lose by more than 4 points if we want a win over Oregon alone to squeeze us into the NIT. Beating Oregon by atleast 7 will also help.

  13. I agree Angry, and thanks for posting well said.

I think they lose to UO, because those guys are playing really well. I can’t stand them and don’t ever watch them except for the CW, but lets face facts they have won road games, beaten good teams at home and have played well enough to be in. Now having said that their program disgusts me.

I think we miss out on the NIT, I sure hope not, but I don’t think we have down enough on the road to earn a spot. Really disappointing after where we were. Now, like Angry mentioned maybe with a week to rest on a neutral court they can make a run in the tourney and earn a berth, but I think that is what would be needed to get in.

The program direction looks great, and I am excited for next season. Tinkle has done a great job, coaching with one arm tied behind his back. Tinkle has actually coached, and I love his matchup zone. I think missing out on a tourney could be a positive if the team keeps that edge and “us against the world” attitude.

    • If they beat Oregon and win a Pac-12 game they will make the NIT, but otherwise I don’t see it. I hope they make the NIT just for those players sake. They’ve given max effort almost always.

Beating Oregon is going to be difficult since the teams are trending in opposite directions. Being at home can only do so much. Should be a fun game to watch for a little while, though, as I expect a raucous atmosphere.

  14. Tinkle has done a great job this year and will only improve…

I really believe Andersen will do the same with the football team…

  15. Well said, Angry.
Now, “is the AB fanbase rational….,or completely insane”? Seems to me some aren’t understanding the premiss of this site, that of “A Critical View of Oregon State Athletics”. Critical is the key word and it is used here to mean, “using or involving careful judgment about the good and bad parts of something”.
The good and the bad for Riley and CR have been pointed out; it’s just that there was so much bad that the good sometimes gets lost. Casey has a lot of good, but bad has been pointed out in his case as well.

The majority of the AB fanbase has been rational, a minority doesn’t know the meaning of the word critical…..or much else. Those spewing the “girly, emotional crap” aren’t gonna be around for long. They’ll feel much more at home elsewhere.

    GO BEAVS!……..and GO ANGRY!
OK WBB, knock off the slow starts; Baseball, get back to basics on the basepaths; MBB, c’mon Olaf settle down (and chicken soup).

    • Yes, WBB knock off the slow starts. I didn’t see or hear any of the weekend’s games but took time for some replay videos. I thought WBB would win the Pac-12 regular season and that the guys would lose both games so I could watch a couple of videos and no angst.

“The majority of the AB fanbase has been rational:” indeed. However, given the slightest glimmer – doesn’t matter the sport – fans (not just AB posters) start in with all kinds of crazy projections. One good game and the next thing OSU is practically into the national championship – that doesn’t seem so rational.

  16. Tinkle is a very good coach and is doing a lot with a little. He’s doing what the media thought Mike Riley did for years. He has a chance at going 9-9 in Pac-12 play with really 1 dependable player and a couple guys he has to pray have a good game. They got some guys coming in who I think will be pretty good shooters but also solid defenders. Once Tinkle has shooters the offense is going to look so much better and GP will be able to attack the rim relentlessly. The fact that he’s gotten 17 wins with this group is unreal coaching.

Expectations got raised with beating Zona but compare the players on this team with other teams close to them in the standings and you’ll see the Beavers have far less actual talent. Tinkle will get talent next year and they’ll be very good very quick.

  17. Beavs are going to need ASU to drop one at home next weekend (assuming they win the civil war) to get the 6 seed. If ASU wins both (Stanford isn’t going to win in Tucson), Stanford, ASU and the Beavs would all finish tied for 5th at 9-9. At that point the combined records against those two opponents would decide the tiebreaker. In that scenario, Stanford would be 5th (2-1), ASU 6th (2-2) and the Beavs 7th (1-2). 5th thru 12th place are still up for grabs with a week left. Win the civil war, then sit back and watch the chaos unfold! Should be fun!

  18. It seemed like most of the Tinkle bashing was from “Corey”, who said he’s a beaver “through and through”. My memory is pretty decent, and I’m on this page every day, and I don’t recall seeing and Corey posts before. Sometimes fans don’t know boo squat about what they’re talking about, but can still be fans.

    • “HireHowland” seems to have popped up here recently also. Who knows maybe he and “Corey” are one in the same. I kind of feel like they are baiting us, so in some ways I don’t want to see a whole thread devoted to their suspect opinions because they probably want the attention.

      • I’m not going back to look, but I’ve posted a few times before. I recall once was from the stands during the Washington game, another during Stanford and probably a few more from further back. Been on this site since around when that David Douglas kid decided to go to UCLA over us.

I think if you go back and read my posts you’ll see this is blown way out of proportion. And I’m sure Angry can confirm I’m not Howland. I agree with this site 90% of the time, but this isn’t one of them I guess.

    • You guys can go back and see that I’ve posted here before. I’ve been reading this since, man, I don’t remember exactly, but I want to say 2009 or so while I was still in college and seeking others who could tell that Riley wasn’t getting it done. I don’t post often, and could care less whether others agree, but if I have something I want to say I will. And I’m not sure you guys even read my comments. I said that adjustments weren’t made and the team was in the game into the 2nd half. That is a “coaching issue” in the fact that a problem of extroadinarily large runs against our team happened in back-to back games. Never once did I come out with a “fire Tinkle” or this guy isn’t the right guy. I think it’s funny that the once critical site is now upset with it enough to justify a complete post on it, but I’m glad it’s provoked further discussion.

      Calm down.

  19. Also I’m not sure if the beavs would win a tiebreaker with ASU. They split the two games between them, both went 1-1 against UA, both 0-2 against Oregon (assuming beavs lose the civil war here), but OSU went 0-1 against Utah while ASU 0-2. Would that decide the tiebreaker? Or would it go to UCLA where ASU went 1-0 and Beavs 1-1? I’m confused on this one.

  20. Great post Angry.

I think Payton starts on most pac 12 teams though. Your looking at a guy who is in the discussion for defensive player of the year. A guy who is usually the best athlete on the floor. His only weakness seems to be consistency, but with the amount of minutes he has to play each game, he’s got to have some let-downs. Also, bet he makes second or third team all pac 12.

    • I don’t know the other Pac rosters well enough to know if Payton would start on them, which is why I said “might” …kind of wanted to leave that open-ended and hear what people thought. I literally watch zero basketball outside of OSU. I know he’d start for CO. I’ll take everyone’s word that he’d start for other teams.

  21. To reasonable people, Tinkle is doing better than expected. If people disagree then let ’em. Who cares?
Andersen will have a tough go this year but he’s in a similar boat, and reasonable people will set their expectations accordingly. Or, try not setting expectations for wins and losses at all. Just try to see how the coaching is during games. How is clock management? How is 2 minutes offense executed? Halftime adjustments? We can learn a lot about the direction of the fb program by looking at those things, not just wins and losses this year.

  22. Don’t forget Gligs and Togiai!

Anyway, GPII would start for every other team other than maybe Arizona and Utah, and for them he’d be the 6th man, just because they’re already set in their backcourt. Utah he’d be fighting to start. He’d certainly start at hole, WSU, UDub, Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA, CU, ASU. If you’ve watched every OSU game, you’ve watched every other team in the conference play. From athleticism, intensity, and IQ, I see that he’s better than either the 2 or 3 on all the rosters.

I could care less about the Win Loss column at this juncture. Is that a loser’s mentality? Maybe. But the way you play says much more than the result since so many other things affect it. We do what we can, and in most first halves on the road, what happens? We outplay the opponent, save for at the end of the half. In the second half, what always happens? Lack of adjustments? No…it’s a lack of shot making. Olaf is short on everything. Jarmal starts doing his poo poo moves. Langston stops making shots he’s not taking (and should have taken a lot more). I see good things in our coach because what he’s working with is so unfavorable. He could use some depth really badly. When Olaf is sick, he needs to not play.

My guy was talking to me today and was telling me that the defense we have is a one trick pony. I don’t think so, just because that one defensive set gives you so many looks. Having the energy to go man would help a lot because it would confuse the defense. And let’s not act like Cal didn’t get super hot today. That three that Bird got the roll in just summed up the game.

    • Don’t forget Gligs and Togiai!

      I didn’t.

(Gligoride Rankocevic, on film, looks a bit slow and clumsy and doesn’t play with passion, but that can change). They also got a free player in Noah Togiai, who will replace and be a huge upgrade over a current a walk-on.

    • The D is just the Ameoba. Obviously, you want to play man when you have an advantage. But that advantage first requires depth, then ability. You can have all the ability and desire you want, but if you have no depth you have no legs for the second half. If you go watch UNLV circa 1990, you’ll see them play man to start most games. But as the starters tired or benchers came in you could see them playing the exact same D we play (with minor variations here and there… but it looked exactly the same).

If you can find tape of the 70’s Pitt teams, you will see the exact same thing. You’ll see it also in the early 2000s at Nikegon.

  23. Add Laura Berg to the quality coach list at OSU. The softball team is 13-5 against some big names – I don’t know if that means those teams are any good. First Pac-12 game is against Oregon which should give a better idea of how good the Beavs really are.

      • that would be a quadrumverate – Rueck, Tinkle, Casey plus 1 more and I don’t know if Berg is really there yet. Could there be a quintumverate? I dare not try to sequence it further – you would have too much fun.

Speaking of coaches – I wonder if the swimming coach is a very good recruiter and I don’t know how pools enter into the college facilities scene or anything about OSU’s pool I don’t expect Missy Franklin, but wonder if Sammy Harrison should be the only OSU swimmer to make the NCAA championships. Poor girl toiled away during all the baseball, MBB, WBB, wrestling, gymnastics, spring football frenzy and probably nobody noticed.

  24. Quite embarrassing that you had to post this. I honestly thought THIS was the site that saw things for what they were and it appears even angry beavs has some serious idiots as well… Smh…. The day tinkle won more than one game in p12 he had a successful season

  25. The primary reason for the team falling down the stretch is Victor Robbins. His suspension caused a lot of problems. He average 20 mins a game. The starters are gassed now because they had to cover his minutes and now walkons are getting extended minutes to cover the starters. Robbins was a scoring threat, the walkons are not. Teams can ignore them and are happy to see them jack up threes all night. He was also much better on defense than the walkons. Basically the team got 20 min of nothing because of his absence. They were able to go 5-5 in his initial suspension but have gone 1-3 in his extended suspension.

The team is gassed. Hopefully the fans will show up for the Civil War and can will them to a win.

    • That’s EXACTLY what I’ve been saying! Me and u r pees in a pod! Lol!

I’ve been pleating with coach to give me another chance. I’m the best overall player in the conference. Since my suspension, I’ve been going to the gym every day at 5 am and chucking 30′ ers till my arms feel like noodles. Last week I got 7 in before that happened. Can’t argue with progress!!!!

I’m not sure what to do in my time now so making and one mix tapes of myself to send out but could use a camera guy if anyone is interestead.

Hit me up on Facebook if so with a resume. My agent and I will review and get back with you with our FINAL choice.

Still not exactly sure if I will play again this year but I know God has a plan for me. With enough support Im praying there’s a chance I play for a few mins against Oregon. I could really pump up the crowd! I’d drop 40 and 15 assists. Probably 10 steals and blocks 2.

But I’d only be there to hit that glass 1st and foremost! I’m a differece makor!!!

      #blessed

  26. LOL. Fit his offense to his players.
    3. What will Nebraska look like under Mike Riley? Huskers athletic director Shawn Eichorst surprised the college football world by hiring Riley away from Oregon State. Riley couldn’t possibly be more different, personality-wise, from previous Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. But what does that mean in how Big Red looks on the field? Riley has been known for running a pro-style offense, though he says he’ll design the offense around the strength of his players. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. will need to fend off challenges to his job this spring. The Huskers seemed to take on the volatile traits of Pelini during his tenure; can they now mirror Riley’s straight-forward, low-key approach?

    Thanks again Huskters.

  27. Angry that isn’t true. You said in this post that you believe CR could go 0-fer in confrence. And with WT getting more wins than projected and a top 15 recruiting class, it is absolutely a successful season. Anyone who doesn’t believe so is insane.

  28. This team has walk-ons from the Dixon Rec Center…

With that in mind, I certainly did not expect this many wins and especially not one against a top 10 Arizona team. Regardless of the road record, this team completely exceeded the poor expectations it was given at the beginning of the season.

  29. Personally, I like them. Nice and simple. I wonder if that’s possibly the start of a new uni combo?

  30. I think its crazy to be going after Coach Tinkle so far. As stated, the man has taken what was left of a team, added some walk-ons, and has them contending at a level only CR had in his best year if that. Wayne has completely exceeded any expectations. To me, after the AZ win, everything has been icing on the cake. Who would have thought with one game left that the team would only have ONE home loss all year. Craig routinely lost to far inferior teams from far inferior conferences at HOME. Whit his hand picked guys.

That aside, I made it down for the Colorado game this year. I got the tickets from Coach himself. Have a friend currently living in Corvallis that is from Montana and family friends of the Tinkles. He still holds relationships with his roots and when my friend has reached out, he has hooked up with seats. He even stayed around long enough after the game to talk to us and take time away from a already late finish to mingle with anyone left in the arena that still wanted to chat with him. Many players hung around to do it too, including GPII.

This guy walks the walk and talks the talk. He is everything you could want in a coach for this university. This man is a legend in the making at OSU. Gonna be exciting.

  31. Out of the loop for awhile. Visited a fairly remote area of Mexico with almost no internet capability. Received a few emails, sometime three or four days late. So I spent some time last night catching up….learned the gov. resigned while we were gone.

Roundball took the long expected dive, but still, all in all a great start for the new coach. Who would have guessed they would win any league games?

Expect Altman’s group of mismatched toys to win at Gil tonight. Say what you will that guy can coach. Was shocked to see they have locked up third place.

Glad to be back. This weather feels good after weeks of heat and humidity. JB
