Go Beavs – MBB & Wrestling
Beavers got a shot at this one today. If the Beavers can keep Tyrone Wallace out of the paint they got a decent chance at winning. Staying out of foul trouble should be a little easier as Cal doesn’t have a big guy of Nastic’s caliber for Gomis, Reid and N’Diaye to defend and they really only have 1 guard who can get into the paint but GPII should do a good job on him at the top of the zone. I think N’Diaye needs to play more. He’s shown a nice face up jumper in recent games and needs to play more consistently to keep getting better.
I’ll go with a Beavs win today 58-56
This is certainly a game that I think we’d win by 8+ at home, but on the road I just don’t know. Bird is very athletic, Wallace is good, and Kravish is their only threat down low. I like our chances with our backcourt vs. theirs; GPII, Malcolm, LMW playing at home in Berkeley.
If they focus and stay out of foul trouble, they might be able to pull this one out. Go Beavs.
And P.S. Go RastleBeavs too, hope they get that Pac-12 title.
This game won’t be close.
As I said like two or three weeks ago, Colorado was the only remaining win.
All these allowed 3’s is reminding me of CR. 40 minutes of focused effort is needed for road wins. 9 early easy points from allowing spot 3 point shots won’t get it done. Marking this game already as 98% in the loss column.
Awful transition defense so far. If I’m Tinkle id just go man to man today.
A Grade Home Coach
D+ Grade Road Coach
You really think Tres Tinkle is going to turn this team into a road winner?
Cause Tres is the only recruit incoming. He’s having to play walk-ons against Pac-12 opponents. Beavers are lucky they beat anybody home or away
Well yeah, along with the other 4 players. Beavs have one guy who would start for any other Pac-12 team and play walk-ons, and you’re blaming Tinkle. Again, very dumb. The players don’t make shots, and they make even fewer on the road (this is common, and even more common with a rebuilding program). You just want to whine and don’t understand this is how it works.
Again, the bench is made up of guys who didn’t practice all year with the team. The kids are young and most are not used to playing so many games in one season. They have had only a bench of 2 or three players all season. So to see the team wear down especially on the road where they can’t gather that adrenaline from the home court is understandable. Robbins would have helped immensely, but that is hand they were dealt. Next season, will be much better just from the fact that they will have more available bodies to help the wear down throughout the season.
You really think Sanders and Livesay are Pac-12 players?
The new law doesn’t officially go into effect until July
Jarmal Reid has been terrible in this game. Over dribbling and forcing shots
He’s been fine, and he looks like he could play defensive end.
Such a shame about Robbins. Beavs badly need him for a game like this. Beavers could go small in this one with him at the 4 and spread the floor. With GP oh the bench this will probably get out of hand quick
Beavs pull ahead, ‘crappy coaching’
I guess he’s an A+ coach on the road (for now). lol
Beavers have completely outplayed Cal since the Tinkle timeout. Team is playing with confidence now
Oh yeah…it’s “Tanner Time”
If OSU wants any real chance to win today they better execute and be sound in the last 2 minutes of this half.
GPII or Duvivier not creating on the last shot of the half is ridiculous. They should always be the ones with the ball in that situation
Bad idea to give Olaf the ball with 9.5 seconds left.
It’s a bad idea to not have more points than your opponent if you want to win the game
Who does the voiceover on this OSU commercial?
Meant to ask this way earlier in the season, but what does the PV on the jersey mean?
It stands for former Beavers coach Paul Valenti who passed away in September
LMW has hit the backboard on 3 different three pointers. Ugly
His 3s are either beautiful all net or a foot too strong off the backboard. It’s funny. He’s like Willie Mays Hayes.
Beavs should start running clock
This pace is terrible for the beavs. Not going to win a shootout.
Olaf being in the game rarely means good things for Oregon State at this point.
Daniel Gomis isn’t even attempting to block shots. Providing zero rim protection and is terrible on offense.
Where is that captain obvious guy?
So funny I was going to make this exact comment following your Olaf comment. So many non-dominant stiffs it’s amazing what Tinkle HAS done this year.
This one is over. Beavs had the game where they needed..8 point lead, yet continued to push and take shots early in the shot clock. They had to milk it there. I’d say that was bad coaching, actually.
Milking the clock is not gonna make shots go in and prevent Cal from getting to the rim. That is why they’re losing.
There is something called “pace”
The pace wasn’t even bad, Beavs just missed some good looks and their initial defense was poor. Cal was getting a lot of easy shots in the half court which shows it was less about pace and more about Cal executing and the Beavers not.
Well the Beavs can play from behind, so it’s definitely important to slow the game to a crawl once they grab an 8 point lead. That gives them time to rest to defend, shortens the game, etc. Yet they took shots with 20 seconds on the clock and let Cal start to run. This wore the Beavs down and made things snowball. That’s the only bad coaching I saw today, maybe all season. The rest was bad players.
Reid was able to rebound a bit and get deflections defensively. When he’s been at the 4 the Beavers have played their best. Olaf and Gomis can’t play together anymore. Too slow and no offense
There are no other options. That’s the problem.
Game about to be over.
Tinkle getting taken to school.
Good lord, what happen to basketball players being able to shoot jump shots? Is it a skill that kids just don’t learn anymore?
Cal doesn’t have very attractive women. Those girls they just showed definitely do not shave their pits.
Their arm pit hair is sustainable, organic, and locally sourced. So it must be good.
I don’t get how none of the Beavs bigs have any presence what so ever.
They’re all lean and passive. Gomis and Nydai(sp) are also raw with zero instincts.
Shit they get over powered and pushed aside by dudes ‘half’ their size, it’s embarrassing.
Wish I had a dollar for every time Gomis puts the ball on the floor down low. Almost always a turnover.
Best game from Duvivier all season. Finishing at the rim and making good decisions
Watching guys miss “and ones” feels like 1st and goal from the 1 and settling for a field goal.
Beat Oregon and win Pac-12 Tourney opener is probably what it will take to get into NIT. Just beating Oregon probably will fall just short. Not looking forward to the CBI.
I think this is a coaching problem to an extent. Why do teams keep having the ability to go on HUUGGGE runs. Stanford the other night and now 22-2? That’s not acceptable.
Limited scoring options, no depth and having guys like Olaf who get blown by consistently. Hard to keep things from snowballing on the road
CR would be 0-18 in conference play. The Beavers have one player (Payton) who might start for another Pac-12 team, but even that is questionable. And people are whining about coaching with this motley crew 8-8 in conference play. ABs should be informed. This is disappointing.
I think I am informed. It’s my opinion but I feel that should be controlled better. They’re not small 10-2 runs; they’re huge ones that get out of control more than they should.
Whatever, dude, you’re not informed. They have walk-ons playing and a shooting guard playing point guard. They also have 3 bigs who are non-existent, so the game is constantly 5 vs 4. They should literally have zero wins. ZERO. 10-2 runs because the other teams in conference have normal rosters/depth and better players. That’s why people who are informed are looking forward to next season and view this year’s pleasant surprise as icing on the cake.
Cal finished the game 37-12. Even the worst Beaver teams of the past decade haven’t looked that overmatched. I think Tinkle is doing a fantastic job but its back-to-back games where things have gotten laughably out of hand, and its his job to fix that.
Because they are on fumes (obvious since the 2nd ASU game). Look at the minutes played for each guy. I called this like a month ago — it was so obvious. You can’t have 4 guys play almost every minute of every game and expect those guys to fly to the Bay Area and win games. This is 101 type stuff. NBA teams go on 20-0 runs. Basketball is a game of runs. Again, 101 knowledge of how this sport works.
They probably won’t be great next year because the freshman will all develop at different rates (e.g. Robert Nelson was a 4-star, but pretty terrible as a freshman); they’ll just have more talent and good depth. So if this level of overachieving bothers you this much, you should probably stop watching for your own health.
They probably won’t be great next year because the freshman will all develop at different rates
Though you would think Thompson and Tinkle develop quickly since their fathers coach the team. But we know being the son of a coach (Mannion) doesn’t always mean great things. Watching film on Tinkle and Thompson, though, I do think both should be pretty good right from the get go.
Did you happen to see CR’s team lose to Seattle (a NCAA transition program at the time) 99-48 at home? Did you see any games during John’s last season? They were out of most conference games before halftime. Tinkle is fixing it, but he can’t do much more this season. Would you like him to reinstate Robbins, do you think he has a medical cure for Chai Baker up his sleeve?
LOL … I think you have a moronic view. Or you are just a duck troll being an asshole.
This whole season was predicted to be almost ALL games where things are laughable out of control. Tinkle and the fans have these guys playing over their heads at home and even sometimes on the road. With little talent, little scoring ability, and virtually NO depth, you can be expected to lose almost every game. But they INSTEAD have a winning record. Dont be such a moron.
I don’t understand the Duck troll accusation. I’m a through and through Beaver graduate, and I’m sorry if I have a different opinion but I frequent this site because of it’s full of people bringing up the sometimes unfriendly viewpoints of OSU athletics. My main frustration doesn’t have anything to do with preseason expectations, but with the reality that they’re in these games at halftime and well into the second half. They can compete at this level and have shown that. And it’s happened in very similar ways over the past two games, so I’m just thinking there has to be some sort of adjustment that could be made to keep them close in the end.
Up 8 to down 14. 22 frickin point swing in 7 or 8 minutes.
Gomis is a liability on the floor.
What hurts the Beavers on the road is a lot of guys can’t feed off the crowd and play above their heads on the road. Team lacks a Roberto Nelson type player who can get to the line or hit a big bucket when the rest of the team is feeling overwhelmed. GP will need to improve to be that kind of guy but as of right now they don’t have that. That leads to things snowballing and the team looking lost on the road
Wouldn’t hurt it Tinkle was open to having a guy or two who could get opponents off their feet and then draw the occassional foul on a 3 point shot. That was one tactic that was quite effective for Nelson and could be a slump buster or momentum changer. GP2 and LMW might be candidates. They do a good job at this in the NBA as well.
Being able to draw fouls is a skill. They have some passive players who don’t quite understand yet how to do that. Nelson could do it as well as Collier in the paint but it’s not that easy.
Yeah, fouling three point shooters is so impactul because it happens so many times in a typical game and I loved that lock down defense Roberto Nelson played. All Tinkle needs is better players and they are on the way.
Roberto wasn’t a good defender but a lot of these current players sucked defensively before Tinkle. I think he makes him about average defensively and maintains offensive play from him
Oregon is going to kill the Beavs next go around. I almost don’t want to make a post for that game after reading some of the clueless comments in this thread.
I expect Oregon State to beat Oregon in a very close and entertaining game. However, on a neutral MGM Grand court I expect we lose by 8 or 9 in our Tourney opener. That part is kinda disappointung because I felt OSU played Auburn tough there earlier this year. However, without home crowd support thus team is more likely than our Pac-12 opponent to wilt down the 2nd half stretch. Beating UO but losing neutral opener probably causes too much NIT worthy doubts for the invite. I will be pleased with beating Oregon though so I hope they end the home schedule on a high note. Atleast gives them a chance but I think it ends there without some noticeable improvements away from Gill.
I expect Oregon State to beat Oregon in a very close and entertaining game
Great, I’m going to have to listen to more of your whining.
Beavs will lose by at least 20, but I expect a bigger blowout. They’re mentally and physically shot. If you want to argue the crowd and the fact it’s the Civil War makes it close…yeah, in theory. But I still think they’re shot and that will ultimately win out.
With me we win by 30 against this team!!!!!!!!
Bet Tinkle seriously reconsidering how careless he was to suspend me for no reason. Guilty until innocent I guess smh!
I think everyone has seen enough of this team without me. Time to take it back and get this tournament push going!!
This is just how its going to be this year.
I think Tinkle has done a commendable job with the personnel that he has to work with. I think the biggest thing this team needs is some help on the front line. They need a go-to player at the 4 or 5 spot. Gomis seems a decent defensive player, can get some blocks, but is so raw offensively. Reid seems mostly out of control. Olaf is just MIA. I hope Tres Tinkle can come in and play the 4, but I haven’t look at his high school stuff. What this team doesn’t need is another 6’7-6’8″ guy to hang out near the three point line and spend his time shooting 18-20 ft. jump shots.
Having some guards who can consistently hit jumpers would be nice. I always thought good shooting guards should be about 50% from the field, plus or minus a couple percent. These guys we have now can drive the basket pretty good, but are woeful outside shooters.
LMW, Schaft, Duvivier all shooting around 35% from the field this year.
Like I said before, when all is said and done it’s the third winning season in 25 FUCKING YEARS and it was achieved with GP-2 and some Craig Robinson 2nd stringers.AND the suspension of their third leading scorer and agruably second best player. I know some expectations were raised when they were 7-4 in league play, but overall it has been a job very well done.
Is there anyone here who really expected a 17-15 (worst case scenario) season after watching the Western Oregon game? Anyone noticing what Larry Krystkowiak has done is Utah. It took more than one season. Utes were something like 6-25 in his first year.
