18.Dec.2015 Far West Classic Invite (Fullerton and Tulsa vs Oregon State)

Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

8pm. In Portland. Back to back nights. Odd part of the schedule here with back to back games Friday and Saturday and then Monday, too. Beavs have the depth now to get through a stretch like this, so I’m expecting 3 wins.

Games are on Pac-12 network.

Go Beavs.

That’s a good point, I think I counted at least 4 of his lane penetrations where he had someone open and he decided to shoot a crazy off balance shot instead. One time he kicked out it to Morris-Walker, but it was almost like he didn’t want to do it (MW missed the open three). I’ve also noticed on fast breaks he tends to keep the ball and try to score instead of dishing to the open wing quickly.

I know it’s early in his career and I’m sure WT is noticing the same things and WT knows a hell of a lot more than I do, so as fans we will just see how he develops. He also needs a ton of work on defense and I know WT sees that.

I’m sure Andersen has known for at least a couple of days what Sitake is going to do. That being said, he’s likely already put out feelers for a DC. My guess is he has a guy in mind and has contacted him. Wouldn’t be surprised if Sitake’s position is replaced within days of a potential announcement.

OT – Eggers with some football updates, including “Slash” Collins (and a remark offense driven by players, not scheme) and Isaac seeking a draft evaluation from NFL:

Nice to see Mitchell make AP PAC-12 First Team and Isaac their second team by the way. Hope Mitchell gets drafted in decent round. I hope Isaac stays – he’d likely start at center, the offense should look much better next year, and it might reflect well on him if he’s at center making the line calls.

Yeah, I noticed that the other day. Also, regarding “We want an offense driven by players…”, in another piece, http://portlandtribune.com/pt/255-sports/college-football/285779-162611-andersen-changes-look-of-beavers-offensive-staff Eggers quotes Andersen on McGiven “Kevin is an excellent play-caller who … has done a nice job taking advantage of his players’ strengths rather than just sticking with scheme”

I ask again, how does all that square with Baldwin’s handling of the RB’s last season?

As for Isaac, I hope he returns and wonder to what degree being selected second team all PAC12 will influence his decision, along with the opinion of the NFL evaluators.

20/20 hindsight, but hiring Sitake might end up being the worst move of Andersen’s first year. Waste of money, waste of a year of defensive development, maybe a relative recruiting setback.

Not the fact that he was one out of maybe three halfway decent candidates able to meet the religious requirements of said job, and BYU’s first choice rejected them. Nope, this is clearly a giant feather in the GA cap.

You would think it will be someone GA has worked with before. Aranda would probably be the first call, but doubt he comes. Breckterfield’s name has been mentioned.

WSU’s DC would be a slam dunk recruiting and coaching wise, but doubt they can convince him to leave the Pirate.

I just dont see Bray getting considered with the way GA has hired in the past. Would be helpful in recruiting though.

I really can’t recall the details of Aranda last year. Do we know that he actually was offered to come to osu and turned it down? Maybe the door isn’t closed on Aranda (which would be a huge get). Though I suspect even if he wasn’t offered he may be a bit miffed that he is essentially GAs second choice (after sitake).

Too bad but at the end of the day it’s too early into the rebuild to really derail anything substantial. And he was getting paid way too much from the jump. I say bring in a young guy recruiter to get the talent and let GA do the rest. We have so many offensive coaches and “helpers” that GA doesn’t need to be that involved with offensive issues anyways

Exactly, I am glad it happened this year and not 2017 when they were established. This gives them time to get a coordinator in place and not sabotage the re-build. To the people that are saying Sitake is overrated, what are you basing that off of? Really one year at OSU with a bunch of Banker hold overs. How about Sitake’s 10 years at Utah, he’s legit. I know you’ll say that was all Winingham but if that’s the case, how would replacing Banker on Riley’s staff have done anything. Basing it on that logic OSU could have replaced him and QB’s would still run wild on them. In Reality Sitake is a great coach and this is actually better timing than anything. He would have a found himself a gig eventually but this gives us a chance to being in someone early in the process.

If I had to pick between those 2 options at those numbers it is a tougher choice than you’d think. Wilcox could decent value in that range and I think he is ready to settle someplace for atleast a few years after his last few. Aranda is interesting but would take atleast 700K to lure away and to keep for a few years having the 3rd year pay a little more makes sense. Don’t want Clune. Would be OK with Todd Orlando in the 575-600K a year range over 3-4 years. I want a DC ready to make a statement of strong defense at Oregon State.

Give me Aranda. GA has enough resources to pay the 700-720k a year needed to get him. If Beavers are going to make a push beyond 7 wins in next few years it will only be with a very stout defense. I always preferred McGiven’s offensive instincts over Baldwin’s but that upgrade will only be good for a couple wins a year as the Beavs start their climb. To get beyond Vegas Bowls we need a defensive attitude and confident leader of that side of the ball. My gut tells me go hard after Aranda then fall back to Todd Orlando if Aranda isn’t secured. Maybe Clune or Pease after that but would be shocked if we couldn’t get Orlando into a Big 5 Pac-12 program with room to grow in the 579-595K a year range. Aranda however is worth spending some extra on but but a buyout clause so Oregon State makes money if he doesn’t stay atleast 3-4 years.

GA gets Aranda with this package IMO:

    Year 1: 710K
    Year 2: 722.5K
    Year 3: 735K
    Year 4: 747.5K

728.75K average over 4 years. If Aranda leaves each year left on his contract has to be paid to Oregon State 375-400K. So it would require a school to be willing to spend in excess 1.1 million a year to take him from us before 4 years.

When–or if– they start winning these kinds of games (thinking Stanford & Gonzaga at Gill end of last year), then they will have arrived at the next level. Recruiting would likely be one of Wilcox’s strength so I would be OK with him receiving an interview but he needs to realize his stock has fallen some and we would need to earn it back. He would only garner around Yate’s range around 525K to start. Only with multiple years of Top 30-35 defenses would he be able to see that climb more than by modest amounts.

Aranda is a tough get but GA has a chance. Unless you like Yate’s potential than Orlando is a good overall option. Reasonable value, several years of DC experience with Top 35 squads and the Pac-12 is a considerable professional upgrade. 580-585K a year is safe and there is still enough room for him to prove himself and have a nice 5 or 6 years with GA at Oregon State. Clune I wouldn’t pay more than 525K. OK potential perhaps but limited DC experience. Orlando hits the sweets spot to me if we can’t get Aranda.

GA would be the best thing to ever happen to a guy like Wilcox. Just like he is slowly but surely taking the tiring Riley out of the players, he would take more & more of the Sark out of Wilcox. Wilcox will be very lucky to be at a Big 5 program next year. Most likely he will sit out a year and assess a plan to move forward. I like that Yates was at A&M for a couple years but don’t know enough about him besides a general good impression.

I say interview Orlando, Yates and throw a bone to Wilcox as well to see what these guys think they could do and their recruiting plans. If you can get Aranda though I’d do it. Pac-12 is a Top 2 conference nationally so beyond Aranda all these guys would keep their resumes at the top as a Pac-12 DC. For Aranda it may be lateral overall but he would make an extra 200K. That gives OSU a chance as Alvarez is cheap.

Didn’t you think the foul on Eubanks in the lane was bullshit? Especially after Duvivier was mauled just before while he was dribbling across the lane. Bad because Olaf had that three lined up. What conference are these refs from? No rhyme or reason to how they are callilng the game.

That is always the biggest question mark honestly. I thought the offense would be so much better with the additions of Tres and Stevie and having more bodies would create greater efficiency but it hasn’t been that great in my opinion. The numbers might disagree with me, but our offense doesn’t look very tuned.

I had huge expectations for our defense because it was so suffocating last season, and with the shot clock it should have been even better. At one point on Kenpom we were top 10 in defensive efficiency. We’ve switched to man to man more often and it hasn’t been as good as I’d like to see. We can create off the defense but there doesn’t seem to be such a huge commitment to it. We’re winning more games but will we continue to? Only time will tell if the defense can really jell into something special.

The same shitty refs we’ve seen at Gill this year. As soon as I saw the crew I knew we were in for a bunch of crappy calls.

As much as I don’t understand the offense, I’m really perplexed by Tinkle’s use of personnel. At least he gave N’Daiye a really good look tonight. And he responded well, I thought.

Much better 2nd half. Beavs finally crack the code and win 76-71. Tulsa has 9 seniors on their roster. That is a pretty good team and I expect them to certainly be in the discussion for the NCAA tournament. Going into tonight Beavs were at 42nd in RPI and Tulsa was 46th. This is a quality win. Great job by the guys to grind this one out after a meh first half.

Only losses so far to Valparaiso (RPI 13) and Kansas (RPI 27). Take care of Monday against a lesser opponent then almost 2 weeks off before the civil war on Jan 3. I think we’d take 9-2 at this point.

We’ll know soon enough but it seems like a few mumbles are in order.

        First the BS mumbles:

“… Unless it’s purely for religious or “feels like home” reasons,…”

Could be but not only that it would appear that the economy is getting ready to collapse which will more than likely result in chaos and possibly anarchy. The Mormons are more prepared for this than any group I know of so it might be they’d feel safer in Mormon country than in Corvallis. Imo a person has to be bat shit crazy to believe in some of the crap that’s taught in Mormonism but I do like their attitude w.r.t. preparedness.

        Now the less BS mumbles:

“… BYU isn’t going to pay assistants what Oregon St can and will…”

Again time will tell but I’m guessing you missed the story I saw about how BYU grads, had made a commitment to provide the funds necessary to bring in KS and I’m assuming his assistants. So your assumption might be off base.

Went to the women’s game, watched the men’s game on TV.

    Women’s game thoughts:
-Jesus the shooting was horrible. Tons of open threes missed.
-We did a poor job handling the press. Overall, the length and athleticism of Tennessee overmatched us and gave us fits. They were aggressive and it paid off.
-The comeback from 17 down was impressive. They showed they can play with almost anyone, but we already know that. They were a top 10 team. I expect you to play like it every time.
-We couldn’t buy a bucket at the end. What was that, 3 offensive boards starting with 1:20 left? That was horrible, and if you can’t score then you don’t deserve to.
-I need to call out Jamie Weisner. I said something about the shooting, but 0-10 from three is absolutely awful. Get it together. One was blocked, another was at the end of the game, but overall that was a shitty individual outing. I seldom call out individuals, but she needs to play better in big games. She airballed a mid range shot to put us up 1 at the end. I really thought she was a gamer, but that game against Tennessee told me that is a lie.

I have high expectations for our women’s team, and they failed today. This team is far too good to have “moral victories”. I can understand it for a lot of teams in building mode, but this team is designed to WIN NOW. We start 3 seniors and 2 juniors, with multiple upperclassmen off the bench. This performance was inexcusable. Especially with one of the best crowds ever. The men wish they could draw 8,223 to a game that’s not Arizona or uo.

    Men’s game thoughts:
-Overall decent performance. They could play better, but they did fine against Tulsa. Tulsa is a deep, experienced team so it was a solid performance.
-GPII is a darkhorse All-American. He’s averaging 16 ppg, 8 rpg, 5 apg, 2.5 spg, shooting 55% from the field with 38% from three. He delivers highlight plays and big plays when we need them. I don’t know if there are 10 better all-around players than him in the nation.
-Tres is playing better and better. He still takes it in and gets his stuff beat up, but he’s becoming a solid all around wing and I’m loving it. His role as a shooter/slasher that’s a solid defender is a role he’s beginning to embrace. He was in my personal doghouse, but Kansas game on he’s been playing well and might earn himself a starting position.
-Olaf shows WAY TOO HARD on screen and roll, and there was a 2 minute stretch in the game where he got beat on the same PnR combination twice in a row and was too slow to close out the third time on the fade off. I like Olaf on offense because he’s been more heady than Tres, but his slow feet are costing us runs.
-Stevie isn’t playing as well as I thought. This is a kid that could be playing for Stanford, USC, Gonzaga, SDSU, basically anywhere, so I expected we got a coup. I guess it’s the freshman thing, but he hasn’t rounded out as well as I hoped. He still commands minutes, but he’s a liability in team defense (although he does get his hands on the ball occasionally), and his shooting has been kinda ehh in the last 3 games. I can see why Tinkle isn’t playing him as often. We’ll need that kid for sure moving forward because he can fill it up, we know he can.
-I wish Malcolm would attack the rim more often.

The men’s team is in decent shape. The rotations are still weird, and I need some consistency. This was a good test, and although they lagged they ended up with the win. I expect a win over Quinnipiac and a good start to Pac-12 play.

I agree regarding the women’s game. If this veteran team isn’t going to win these types of games–at home to boot–then when is it going to turn that corner? Or is it? I would like to see more of Bruce, he seems pretty comfortable out there. Thompson Jr. needs to make open threes or his value goes down because he is a defensive liability at this point. Wasn’t his dad know for his lock down “D” at Syracuse? Duvivier is so strong, he can drive and get a shot off most of the time, question is will he make it. He missed a couple of layups again last night. Reid looks out of shape and can’t even get his shot off at this point. Overall, though it was a great effort, but man this team is GP2 right now and a cast of sidemen. I’ll take it for now

I wasn’t talking about just last night, but he did blow throw the Tulsa defense for a nice lay-up. He has been injured lately, but I think he plays within himself more than Thompson Jr and plays better positional defense. Bruce also looked good breaking presses in a couple of earlier games.

Thompson Jr. seems to have scoring on his mind and that may be what WT wants, but WT has also made subtle references to Thomson Jr’s defense. Down the road, Thompson Jr. and Bruce should be an impressive guard combination.

Just wondering – in your mind when the shots aren’t falling who’s responsibility is it to change the strategy from casting off the 3’s to working for lay-ups and higher percentage shots – – the coach or the player?

Imo whoever has that responsibility dropped the ball last night.

Assuming there was a game plan in the first place, and the team was following it, then it seems to me that logically, adjustments should come from the coach (who should always be ready to “adapt, innovate, overcome”). For $10,000, a Clint Eastwood quote from what movie?

The problem is, when you’re getting good shots that you normally would make, the tendency often is to believe they’ll start falling at any moment. They did — but too late. I guess one of the things that makes a great bench coach is to recognize quickly the need to adapt and come up with effective alternatives on the fly.

Thompson had a good game Friday night, the back-to-back nights he wasn’t as effective. Tulsa’s length and athleticism really bothered us early. Tulsa was much better than Cal St Fullerton.

The rotation was a little wierd, Goomis played after reading he had a set back I thought he was out. I think the rotation had to do with the minutes everybody played the night before.

Eubanks got in foul trouble and that really limited his minutes. N’daye I thought supplied good production I don’t understand why he doesn’t play more?

Tulsa was very effective at over playing the post on defense and we were taking bad angles trying the pass the ball to the baseline. The second half we really turned things around on the defensive end and Tulsa seemed to run out of gas. I don’t know if they played the night before or not, but they were the team that ran out of steam.

Tinkle subbed I counted 11 different players on Saturday, and that was a little choppy lineups.

Reid is good at creating offense out of nothing, but it can be ugly. But he is one guy who can create a shot when things breakdown. You kind of have to live with that.

The double high post in the second half was really creating some good looks, but with the different substitutes it seemed they struggled in getting it setup properly and in rythmn.

Got run but those are a few thoughts. Good win, great fun game to be at, better crowd.

Won tickets to the Civil War, so overall great experience.

Totally unprepared for the speed and quickness at the start of the game. Scott R also blew it by sitting on TO’s while the Vols built a big lead. Weisner was bad and was lucky she didn’t get a T for slamming the ball down after almost getting the ball stolen. Props for the comeback, but they should have won. Hamblin has some bad hands, The Bill Buckner impression on the second to the last offensive series being the most egregious.
Olaf with a couple of huge plays. Good win over a good Tulsa squad.

Hate that Mamma Machado keeps mentioning Clune. Hawaii does not prep coaches to be elite in a conference as tough as the Pac-12. Would take Pendergast before Clune who isn’t in my Top 5.

Sticking with Aranda and then Orlando as my Top 2.

Orlando would take the jump to the Pac-12 along with the raise in pay and national profile so If GA doesn’t get his top man in Aranda there seems a 98% chance he gets his next target. Mamma throwing out Clune just because he has LB experience is lazy and a good way to make the wrong hire.

Hiring Sitake might end up sealing GA’s coaching fate. The “best” assistant hire ends up being the most damaging. Ironic.

Even Beaver Nation won’t put up with sub-.500 seasons forever, and I don’t know how you get a better job after failing here (unless you’re a gosh darn “nice” gum chewing guy with a cornsucker AD on the line.)

Or maybe this is all an opportunity 🙂 GA is a doer, not a whiner and moper.

For those people here wishing Sitake all the best… WHY? He did little here, made bank for it, and is now raiding the staff and recruits. I’m not saying anyone should hope he chokes on a chicken bone, but I don’t see the need to wish him well.

I remember asking day 1 why people where so high on him because Utah actually gave up a lot of yards, and people said it was because the Utah D played with intensity. I think that was due to the players and culture they built over time with Whittingham and GA, and Sitake road those coattails. They guy has pretty much done nothing and everyone loves him. He’s like Lane Kiffin and Sark in a way where those guys being around winners made people assume they were winners, too.

Michigan hires the Boston College DC. Shouldn’t have to go overly extreme with our Aranda offer with Michigan no longer considering him. USC has some interest but that place lacks all loyalty or job security. Good to atleast have a little of that without going anywhere near the Riley end of the spectrum either.

Aranda knows what working side by side with GA is like. OSU can offer him a nice pay package where he spends 3 years to make what it would take him 5 in Madison. He may get used to the idea of a stable 800K a year gig without as much turmoil as other places and stay 5 or 6 years as OSU builds itself back into Rose Bowl contenders under GA.

Repeat after me……….Aranda is not coming to Corvallis. If he wanted to he would have been here last year. He stayed because it is a much better career path for him. It is playing the long game. He is hot coach and coming to OSU would only diminish him. He has most of his players coming back from a very good D. He interviewed with the Packers last offseason and is interested in either a NFL DC gig or a CFB head coaching job. Nobody wants him out of Madison more than I do, but it won’t be as a backward move to Corvallis.

Is that known for a fact? Or is it hearsay? Maybe GA asked Aranda to come with him last year and Aranda said no. Besides, Why would Aranda stay with no guarantee of a job? Paul Chryst could have easily brought someone else in to be the DC and Aranda would’ve been left high and dry with no job. Personally, I am not buying it

Alvarez realized he had a great coach and Aranda saw he had a much better chance of advancing ing in his profession by staying in Madison. Chryst had no say in the matter. I’m sure GA wanted him, but Aranda knew he had a good thing going at Wisconsin. Perhaps he ends up at USC, but speculation of him coming to Corvallis is Pure Orange material.

Money talks. And no way are they giving him a dc job in the NFL with Hawaii and utah state as a majority of his coaching experience. He’d be a position coach first. It seems that interview was more of a let’s bring in the local guy to talk kind of thing. If they were really interested he’d be coaching at green bay. And there’s already rumors that he’s moving on. It’s a shot in the dark but you never know. All Anderson can do is ask, with a suit case full of money.

The rumors on the Badger and Packer boards were that he was offered the LB coaching job with a chance to take over from Dom Capers if the Packers D sucked again.
Money does talk, but only to an extent. He is a golden boy right now, and the big money is to become a CFB HC. Better chance of doing that in Madison. He will only move to a higher profile CFB program.

    First post-Sitake commit test…

    From Nemec:

‘…I like Coach A(ndersen) and the program they are building. They have a lot of good commits in the class of 2016. Utah, I love the coaches and the defense… physical,” he said. “TCU, good defense and good coaches. Nebraska, good coaches and fanbase. They showed a lot of love.”

Despite a developing bond with Andersen, Sitake’s departure for BYU appears to be a major factor in Simmons’ impending decision.

“It definitely affects my decision,” Simmons said. “Sitake was the one coach that was recruiting me the hardest. I want to know my DC and have a good relationship as well… now I don’t know who will be my assistant coach. It impacts me.”

Hoping to ease those concerns, Andersen and Simmons spoke Sunday, hoping a final pitch would lead him to Corvallis.

“He talked about how I need to trust him and that he’ll get a coach for me,” the junior college product said. “That’s basically what he said, just trust him.”

Simmons is set to make an announcement Monday “afternoon or evening,” he said, which might be the first time Sitake’s departure is felt on the recruiting trail.’

I’m not sure OSU was ever really in the running for him. His official visits were to Nebraska, Utah and TCU. On 24/7 he has 11 schools rated as his interest being cool & OSU is amongst them. He has the above 3 rated as warm interest.

Also he’s not waiting to see who OSU hires and who his coaches would be so I’ll be surprised if he picks OSU.

I would take this kind of information from all sources with a grain of salt; whether it’s O-live, 247, Angie, Twitter or the countless others. Until a commitment is made (or a new coach is formally announced!) its all click-bait.

As for 247’s player profiles (or Rivals, or Scout, or…), general information is rarely updated until a commitment is confirmed. As for the interest-level rankings, those are rarely kept current. I’ve seen a “cool” or “none” remain on a profile even after a player has publicly listed a particular school as a finalist.
