  1. It is starting to look like at this specific point the Beavs do not match up with most teams in the league in terms of talent and athleticism. I’m not saying that can’t change, but GP-2’s senior season may not be anything special team-wise.

    • I barely remembered to put a thread up. Is anyone excited about this team anymore? I thought we were over it. On to baseball… This team will be lucky to make the NIT.

    • Looks like I was wrong about this game, very nice 2nd half, but now they need to do something on the road with two home losses already.

    • What are you talking about?

We’ve had more talent than every team we’ve played except KU so far. I’m not going to try to sell consistent effort or focus. But we have a damn fine team who can beat anyone on any given day.

Every one of our losses except Valpo can be explained away for this or that. Right now is the time to watch for teams to step up. It sure would have been nicer to have started conference play. But this week and next month are the real crunch time. Having our issues in the early conference slate are preferable. I don’t expect UW to hold together over the next month. Cal could be scary.

  2. Tinkle seems to be somewhat CR-esque with same-old, same-old. I’m halfheartedly listening to the game, even though they are ahead a bit, because I fear something will break down. Three fouls on Peyton.

  3. So of the fouls we get called against us are literally mind blowing. Eubanks heading down low to guard USC big. SC big throws elbow up at Eubanks face. Makes contact. Eubanks does nothing and gets whistled for foul. So bad

  4. Beavs playing pretty well right now. ST, jr. missing on some wide open threes though. He’s not exactly ice on those shots…got to make the wide open shots, at least half of them.

  5. OSU going to the “prevent offense” again. Holding it until 10 on the clock. I don’t like that at all, just end up with a junk shot out of it

  6. Eubanks very active both offense and defense. A Good game for him, you still see the potential there. Has some work to do, but is showing some production.

  7. Nice win by the Beavs. Pretty strong for the whole second half. USC couldn’t throw it in the ocean from 3 pts. which certainly helped.

  8. Much better coaching and execution down the stretch. Small doses of Olaf and no Reid definitely helped. Eubanks was terrific and Big G looked ok. Seemed like overall the players who SHOULD have been in the game actually were for a nice change. GP2 was amazing

  9. They always play well at home. Even last year with that bad roster they played well at home. The problem has been the road…since they can’t figure that out, they won’t go far. It’s hard to imagine them sweeping the Arizonas, but that’s what they have to do since they took a dump in CO and UT.

  10. Good win. Good response to USC’s run in the first half.

Only four more home games left so they’ll need to sweep a road series. With the PAC12 rated very deep, .500 in conference play should get them in the tourney.

    Can’t lose to ASU.

  11. Great win, even though I feel like our guys got jobbed. Thank goodness SC missed 14 free throws, but either way there was a barrage of calls that left me really questioning it. Eubanks blocks a shot, called for a foul because Jovanovic flails. Stevie pulls away and doesn’t touch McLaughlin and still gets the foul called on him. They missed a basket interference and a baseline interference in the same sequence. A couple of fouls on GPII were all ball. They got bailed out a ton, plus Stevie could not hit the ocean from 3. That 15 point win felt more like a 25 point win, even though SC came close near the end. Plus Jovanovic didn’t get a delay of game warning for holding the ball after he got called for an offensive foul, and Metu bumped Tres on an inbounds play when he came out of the game, which was a lowkey punk move.

I’m still trying to figure out how we shoot fewer free throws than teams that take more three pointers than we do, but whatever.

The team played pretty good defense overall, and GPII had an absolute monster game. 22 points, 15 boards, 4 steals, 8 assists. He stole a couple of those rebounds from Tres and Drew though which left me laughing.

  12. When the commentators are talking about “phantom calls” and how “the refs are human too”, and this kind of thing is a regular occurrence in conference, you know you have an officiating problem. Well, that and by just watching the game.

  13. Indeed – since the Beavs won, it doesn’t seem as significant, but two calls in particular; 1) GP2’s
foul where,”that was like two people in a crosswalk running into each other,” and 2) what could Steven Thompson have done differently not to be called for the foul “nothing!”

  14. Damn Beavers, now I have some hope again. Need to win on the road though and they probably need 3 or 4 road wins to stay relevant. Of course, the Beav win today put the Ducks alone in first place, I believe.

    • Negative. Huskies are currently 5-1. If they beat Utah they’ll be alone in first. If they lose they’ll be tied with the ducks for first

  15. The gals won an ugly one in Colorado. Appalled how bad the shooting was by both teams. If you take Hamblin, Weisner, and Gulich’s stats (the only players who shot over 50%) the rest of the team was 3-29 from the field. Some of the shooting technique the gals have is brutal to watch. I wonder if growing up they just didn’t have the strength and so developed this “shot-put” style off the shoulder to get the ball up to the rim?

  16. The steal Payton had while the SC guard was yapping at the ref on the sideline and not paying attention was hilarious. I’ve never seen that in any of the gazillion games I’ve watched. Loved the smirk on his face afterwards. Big G has a nice FT stroke. Good win.

    • Even my 84 year old mom let fly with a, “These refs stink!” And from where we were sitting I’m not sure how well she could see the court.

    • I sortof watched the game via a stream and it appears that the seats behind the scoring table looked better? Also, sounded like the student section was in rare form – and did I hear an announcer or a ref telling someone to get off the court?

      • On TV the seats shown still had, maybe, 30+% empty. Reported attendance was 7020.
We brainstormed this here before, several simple ways to improve the image seen by the TV audience.
Too bad OSU doesn’t have someone dedicated to “ideation”

      • The student section was outstanding. Packed and well organized. The same young man, ( looks like a youthful Dee Andros) who goes out on the field at football games and yells into the microphone, is front and center in the student section. He’s a terrific organizer and motivator.

    • Carolina/Denver has no appeal to me. I might not even watch that. And it’s funny, they are saying 82hrs of pregame shows. Lolol. Who the hell would watch that?? Even if the Beavs were in the NC game I would watch maybe 1hr of pregame.

Over/under on Remmers being mentioned once in those 82 hours is 1. I’m taking the under.

        • Cam Newton looks like Obama to me, so I might watch just to laugh at the idea of the prez winning super bowl MVP. Quite a year for Obama!

          • ?

And some of your friends are black?

Larry Bird looks like George Bush to me, so anything I’m saying now can also be considered just ridiculously dumb. Quite a year for ridiculously dumb!

          • That would be typical of the crowd self-called El Stupido.

            159.203… btw.

But I’ve not fought that fight against scammers before. So maybe you have a chance. You can go fuck yourself now… not that you haven’t repeatedly done so for years already. I can’t imagine you have any original thoughts in your head.

          • Peyton Manning looks like Will Farrell to me, so I might watch just to laugh at the idea of me being an idiot coloring the viewing experience for a game which will have 15 minutes of action over four or five hours.

      • I gotta be honest. If Beavs were in NC game, I’d probably be able to stomach upwards of 3 hrs pre game shows tops. Of course I’d be working on side projects the whole time.

        • I wouldn’t waste any time on pre-game garbage. Talk is not action. And it’s not like football has any proportional action over any given 4+ hour event.

  17. That was a fun game to be at. Thank you OSU athletic department for comping me tickets because of the CW tickets I bought (but couldn’t get to because of the weather… gave them to a friend in Corvallis). Gill is a great experience. I love the light from the old windows.

There were 2 downsides: acoustics are bad at the upper level. Couldn’t understand any announcements. Not a big deal. But unfortunately there was some knucklehead behind me giving inane commentary the entire game. He got close to whacking me across the back of my head. Twice. Unfortunately my 10 year old son was with me so I just (as Elsa would say), “let it go.”

GP2 is worth the price of admission. He is everywhere and a blast to watch. I hope the Beavs can make some noise between now and March and get him a chance to play in the dance. I think they have a shot but it will require some road wins and a solid performance in the Pac12 tournament.

  18. Utah wins in Seattle in overtime. If there is a team that’s been more Jekyll and Hyde than the Beavs, that would be the Utes. Just 2 games separate 10 teams in the standings after the weekend.

    • If they make the NIT it would be a successful season for year 2. The problem is next year they lose GP2, and who fills that void? He is like 50% of the team right now.

What I’m looking for more than post-season, at this point, is who the hell steps up for next year. Tinkle2 looks to be improving most rapidly, but he has an entirely different skill set. I’d like to see Thompson improving more, and maybe get Bruce more involved.

Is McLaughlin a disruptive defender? Looked like more of a scorer. Paging Jack

      • they were close to making the NIT last year. I understand it takes time to build a program. Very little of the CR regime is left after this season. I would like to see incremental improvement year to year. To me that means an NIT berth this year. If there’s going to be minimal improvement or a step back I would think that would be next season as they will be mostly freshman and sophomores. Two years from now, imo is the year to make a run. The last I heard the 2016 signee’s were JC guy Keondre Dew, Ben Kone and McLaughlin. I don’t claim to know anything about any of the 3. I think I think I also read that there’s still two scholarships available.

        http://espn.go.com/colleges/basketball/recruiting/school/_/id/204/class/2016

      • You’re starting to see some of the potential of the frosh. Stevie is much more confident with his handle through traffic. Tinks is patient and utilizing his pivot more efficiently down low. Drew has a lot of work to do, but I was really happy to see Big G play well today.

No Daniel or Cheikh worries me. Are they hurt?

McGlaughlin is good on both ends, but he is spectacular from the perimeter on O. That’s not to say he’s not excellent at everything else. Bo wanted him at Wiscy. That should tell you what kind of player he is.

And Kone will make our post play look so pretty.

GP2 is awesome. We lose some of the iso abilities he provides. But he feeds off a lot of what his teammates do. You can already see late iso situations run into the frosh moving and dishing to each other. While it won’t appear any one player fills any one void, a conglomeration of play will easily fill what voids you see if they don’t do so before the end of this season.

  19. NIT is like being in a platonic relationship with a Sports Illustrated bikini model.
I hope they can string together some wins and make the Dance.

    • Then CBI is staying at home and spanking it to said model. You get a taste of the fantasy, but are ultimately filled with shame, emptiness, and something you will never brag about

    • A better simile is rarely seen in a sports blog comment section. At some point in the future I will use this without attribution. I thank you in advance.

  20. OT and apologies if posted elsewhere. Eggers on Collins transfer. Collin’s father: “He wants to play QB.”

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/290080-167459-desire-to-play-qb-is-reason-for-collins-transfer-father-says

Also OT – Unrealistic Super Bowl Prediction: Cam Newton injures throwing shoulder on first drive, after unnecessarily leaping over someone or nothing and into the end zone. Derek Anderson comes in, throws for 400+ yards, 4 TDs 1 INT, and is named MVP….cites Jonathan Stewarts pass protection as having been “great!”….

        • He does that while playing? Or is it just a part of the show?

I happen to be offended by all the friggin’ ads in a football game. By the end of the first quarter, I will have watched more ad time than I will see actual action in the game. In fact, I know people who watch the Super Bowl for only the ads.

So who cares if he dances or poses? Make him stop scoring TDs or getting first downs if you don’t like it. I do think the clock should be running for PATs. But I don’t care what you do with that time.I happen to like how he treats kids during the games.

    • Yeah, Eggers piece was up on the previous thread.

The quote which caught my eye was, “We have to find him a home. He did a heck of a job as a true freshman who really didn’t have any help.
I see now there is a comment on Eggers article asking what kind of help was missing; teammates, coaches, the University??

One thing sure, I don’t think he is getting a lot of good help from his dad who said, “I raised him to be a quarterback…I put that in his head as far back as he can remember”

    • He seems to have matured very fast into a decent human and good leader, if we’re being honest.

Too bad we can’t say the same about his doppelganger.

      • He does seem to adhere well to what Rivera says about being responsible to his team. He’s the anti-Manziel as far as I can see. And this may be his year.

I do think nobody (except the Patriots) is talking about how good Denver’s D is. But the Panthers do look good right now.

      • He seems decent enough with his charity and the way he treats kids. It’s his on field extracurricular antics that annoy me. Dude, you converted a third down, you didn’t cure cancer. Does Tom Brady or (insert any other NFL QB) go hey everybody!!! Look at me!!! After he makes a good play? Superman my ass

  21. What is it going to take to get into the tourney from the deep P12? 9-9? The winner is going to be what 12-6 at best? The NIT is the most likely landing spot but if the Beavs can steal 2 or 3 on the road it is possible they are sniffing the real tourney come March.

    • I would guess 9-9 gets in with the amount of good players there are in the Pac this year. The RPI for the conference is strong enough to get 8-10 in. But I don’t care about that. I would just like our team to reach .500 for once. I need a return to normalcy.

  22. This quote is from one of Ken Goe’s links in OL, http://tucson.com/hansen-s-sunday-notebook-would-big-be-a-better-fit/collection_7bb5fd9c-c21c-11e5-812f-678b8e4cc8e2.html re: would Arizona fit better with the Big 12 (which is apparently only 10?) and mentioning that, with all the sports action in the cities where Cal/Stanford, USC/UCLA play college sports don’t get much notice.

“But given the take-it-or-leave-it attitude toward college sports in Los Angeles and San Francisco — Saturday’s Oakland Tribune did not publish a single word about the Arizona-Cal basketball game — you wonder if the Pac-12’s footprint is really superior to that of the Big 12.”

In a long-ago article about Brandin Cooks, he cited that as being one of his reasons to go to Oregon State – he would be noticed.

I assume the coaches use that recruiting angle.
