  1. Keys tonight –

They aren’t going to win by shooting three pointers. I don’t expect them to shoot 50% from deep today. With ASU lacking depth, the Beavs will need to take advantage. Get to the rim, draw fouls. get in the bonus early. Even though the Beavs are terrible FT shooters, they need to get to the line a lot today.

Payton had an awful game vs ASU last time out, needs to lead the way here.
STJ needs to continue his growth. Be a little more consistent each half.
Bruce – If he can play like he did against UCLA, he’ll have a big game.
Malcom/LMW – One of these guys needs to have a 10pt game. Can’t disappear tonight.

I expect a battle. Down to the wire with free throws deciding the game.

    • Is it really better to drive to the basket? I feel like the FG% isn’t that much lower from 3pt as it is from Eubanks or Jarmal Reid throwing up shots down low. Especailly Reid. It seems like he doesn’t even look at the bucket when he puts the ball up in traffic.

        • Can’t agree, homefry.
DevEn has started all 32 games as of 3-6-16; she is #5 in point production, #4 in steals, #3 in 3pt percentage.
I’m short on time, there are other stats which indicate she is a worthwhile part of a very good team.

  2. I need a good game from GP2, something solid from Drew, and hopefully Stevie can hit his shots. I think it’s gonna offensively be those 3 guys carrying the load offensively overwhelmingly. Play your way into the tourney and make it happen.

  3. This is the most important game for men’s basketball in a generation. Making the dance is critical to selling the program to upper level recruits. We have run out of coaches kids to nab I’m pretty sure.
The NIT is nothing. Progress that is ultimately worthless. There may be a step back next year without GP2. They have to seize this moment to continue the upward trajectory. Someday may never come.
I was a student during the absolute apex of the program and the thought that this drought could actually drag on this long is mind boggling to me. It is a parallel to Gopher football. There is a real old timer close by us in our tailgating lot that has a word of warning. His freshman year he decided not not to go to the Rose Bowl. Said he was going to go the next time they went. It seemed like a rational decision. Two years before they had gone and also won the national title. Well, that was 1962 and they have not been back. So the Beav’s better make it happen. Carpe Diem…or seize the Beav!

  4. When Payton pushes the pace and attacks the rim on offense we play our best. With them having limited depth it will tire them out. Not enough offense to score consistently against a setup defense.

    • Agree and disagree. We do need to open it up and make and take the secondary and third transition points instead of rely on the half court sets. But once those go down, the half court sets run much more smoothly and work like a real hoops team ready to play. I thought we might spiral out of the season without Tres. But the UCLA game was fun to watch… except for FT shooting. We opened the floor with secondary transition shots and continued to pass well when we slowed it down.

Watch for Hurley to try to slow the game way down. For the last two games without Tres, we have looked shaky with what was normally a solid back court press break. Hopefully that was addressed in practice.

  5. So an honest off topic question before the game starts.

Does GP2 have a legit shot at being drafted and being successful in the NBA? He seems to do well vs other PAC12 talent, and having 4 other legit players around him could help, but from what I think I see I am just not sure.

He seems to have only an average jump shot, and doesn’t take/make many 3’s.

He is also terrible at the line (around 60% i believe? That seems awful?)

He does defend very well, and can attack the glass, but I honestly do not follow the NBA at all to know how well his skills will translate from PAC12 to NBA level talent.

    Thanks for answering!

      • So, I am not familiar with the NBA draft, there is only 2 rounds but it looks like some teams get multiple pics per round (looks like philly has 4 picks total, while Portland gets 1?)

So if a team is willing to use their very limited number of pics, normally they’re expecting you to contribute? I mean they probably would not draft someone who they think will sit in the NBA-D for several years before becoming a car salesman right?

        • Each team technically is allotted 2 picks each year. A first round and second round. Position is based on where they finish in league wide standings as well as a lottery which repositions the top 14 picks.

1st round picks get a guaranteed contract for 3 years. 2nd rounders need to negotiate contract terms after getting picked. Nothing is guaranteed for 2nd rounders. Teams may own their rights but allow them to play overseas, or put them in the d-league for development.

A team gets multiple pics or loses pics by trading them away or for extra ones. Portland has traded away pics as part of prior deals, which is why they have one this year.

          • So if philly drafts payton in round 2, but then allows him to go play in china rather than sign him to a roster spot, Payton can get a contract in china. If he blows up and decides he wants to play in the NBA, Philly still has his rights so there needs to be mutual interest from Payton and Philly, or Philly needs to trade his rights to another team.

          • I hear people talk about the lottery like it is super shady, done behind closed doors, and you can almost predict who will get what pics each year. Is there any truth to that, or is that sour grapes style people pissed that “Their” team lost out on a good pick?

          • Sour grapes. Each team has their GM observe the lottery. Its ping pong ball style like you see with megabucks. Bad teams have best odds, and its rare that the #14 team leaps into the top 3.

Their may have been a couple questionable drafts in the 80’s ( like magic and bird to Lakers/Celtics, or Ewing to New York) but I dont think anything shady has been proven.

            Current process is pretty transparent.

          • OT but Angry, you really think it’s harder to be shady in pro sports? Even with with examples like soccer scandal, tennis, tour de france? It seems like it takes longer to get caught if institutionalized, but the occurrence of it doesn’t seem less common. When there’s that much money to be made, somebody usually tries to capitalize in an unethical manner.

          • When there’s that much money to be made, somebody usually tries to capitalize in an unethical manner.

Remove the “that much” part, and this is truth.

          • The NBA doesnt need to be shady with the draft. Free agency is where the star players get to move to the big market teams.
When was the last time Portland landed an all-star calibur guy in free agency?

          • Probably true. The “self-policing” effect of the NBA is that the big names usually tend to prefer the big markets, and those markets therefore tend to retain talent and therefore influence in league outcomes and retaining viewership.

But as the NBA, and NFL, seek to expand their markets and move overseas, it’s easy for me to imagine them some day suffering the same kind of scandal as international soccer has recently. If/when the profit increases by moving to international markets, its only a matter of time before greed similarly rears its head in these sports. The game, (or games, whatever sport) become less about true competition, and more about market retention, viewers’ entertainment, advertising, and profit….oh wait, that sounds like NCAA football….

          • NCAA?

I’ll be impressed when all cities/counties/states tell the NFL they can take their stadium building subsidies and cram that shit back from whence it came.

    • His jump shot is average and FT bad, but he’s very disruptive — that will get him drafted. My prediction is he plays 3 to 5 years as a defensive standout then goes overseas. He’s a specialist/tweener. The Payton name is helping him. If he somehow develops his outside shot all that changes.

      • It seems like on the NBA they really value somebody who can defend on the perimeter (as much as anybody plays D in that league), but they want that person to have an outside shot too. Which I realize sounds like captain obvious but with continuing increase in long distance shooting, it’s just my perception of a league I don’t watch.

Also, the D that Payton Sr. Played in his youth would draw a lot more calls these days. Jr. Will make it, but agree, his shot and FT absolutely have to improve. I think they will, and he sticks as a good complimentary player. Sr. Used to have an ugly shot, but became an effective outside shooter. Used to love watching the Karl-ciached Sonics w/Kemp, Payton, et al.

      • Really will depend on which team he goes to. He’ll likely get drafted in the second round but it might be better if he goes undrafted. That way he can choose a team. He’d fit in a lot better on an established team vs one that’s rebuilding. I think Boston would be the best match. Smart coach and gets the most out of his guys. No stars but are third in the east right now.

  6. Come on You motherfuckers! I need something to go right this year. May as well be a beaver tournament berth! For the love of alimony, Let’s get it tonight!

  7. Reid out there throwing up Hail Marys from a foot away. I can’t remember seeing much discussion about this Rakocevic guy on here. He seems like a good player.

  8. If those announcers would shut the hell up and start telling us what the whistles are for instead of talking about the price of gas I wouldn’t have to throw stuff at the tv.

  9. GP2 has played almost three halves against ASU and has all of two points. What the hell are they doing on defense to stop him?

  10. So Tinkle keeps this Rakocevic guy in a closet to become leading scorer and rebounder in OSU ‘ S most important game in two decades…..

  11. I like that Rakocevic can shoot free throws pretty well for a big man.
Does he have a nickname other than Big G? How about Big Rak?

  12. 50% of shots were 3 point attempts. Yeah, should stop that.

ASU keeps attacking the short corner. If Eubanks is in there, he’s blocking those.

  13. Need to stop jacking up 3’s, move on offense, get out and run after defensive rebounds (yeah, when they actually decide to rebound) and attack the rim. For as not great as they played, still up 9 at halftime.

  14. When even Walton notices you’re effing up and actually says something negative, you’re in trouble. You hear that Olaf???

    • I thought it was hilarious when Walton said he’s now taken 5 shots after his last miss and they’ve all been 3’s. The other guy says, he doesn’t take 2 point shots. ZIng! Lol

      • What drives me crazy is that they run offense for Olaf and he usually gets wide open looks. Just think if he had made two more of those shots and the Beavs could be up 15? I know he was great against UCLA, but he drives me crazy.

  15. Is GPII going for the “deja vu all over again” thing. No points in the first half and a good performance in the second??

  16. STJ has played some great defense the last 2 games. Forcing a lot of turnovers and keeping guards in front of him. He’s been missing shots tonight but he’s been great on D. Nice to see him elevating his game in the absence of Tres

  17. Great play by ST Jr there. Anticipating the pass, taps it to himself and gets it ahead it GP2 for the easy dunk.

  18. Six point swing should be a stat. Olaf shanks another wide open three and then ASU comes down and hits one that keeps them in the game.

  19. 14 point lead at the under 4 timeout. Beavs are in good shape. ASU is not the hot 3 point sharp shooting team that UCLA was. C’mon guys, close this out

  20. Bruce is silky and fucking quick. I really like this kid. He makes the best entry passes I’ve seen of any beav point guard in a long time.

And if I were tinkle I would tell Eubanks any time he tries to dunk 1 handed he’s coming to the bench. Two hands every time and he’d be fine. Just gets too fancy trying to bring the thunder. Needs to grow up.

  21. Lol Bill just told Sparky to spark one up!!! Love that guy he’s probably high as a kite right now and is genuinely planning to roll one up with Sparky

  22. Anyone catch that graphic that compared our tournament resume to Arizona’s? That was kinda shocking. I’ve seen it, but I had no clue that Arizona looked like that compared to us. Thank goodness for us scheduling the way we did. It put me at ease, honestly.

    • Walton is great.. I grew up listening to him do the local UCLA games during the time he was also the main color guy on NBA .. Sure he rambles on off color topics a lot but his basketball knowledge and insight is always on point.. And his passion for the game alone makes his calls enjoyable… For me at least.. A lot of people have and will still hate on him

      • I’d prefer no commentary at all when Walton is on the call. If they could just mic the ambient sounds of the game and leave the talking turned off I’d enjoy it much more. He adds nothing of value to the game. Its been the same tired schtick for years. Talks about the “great ones” or the “all timers”, followed by name dropping overrated rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s. Sprinkles in a John Wooden story and says conference of champions about 75 times. Maybe drop a random geographical location and talk about it being the most beautiful place on earth. Wash rinse repeat. Same garbage for years….. It’s all just noise that distracts from the actual game being played. At least that’s my opinion. I know others love him

        • I tried turning the TV sound off and listening to the radio but the radio was about 15 seconds ahead of the TV. It was really weird…

  23. Beavs win! 75-66 final. I think they’re in no matter what happens now. Playing with house money tomorrow night

      • and pissing in his car’s gas tank and dropping a duece on his couch?

Then fart on his pillow so he gets a case of pink eye?

Sorry, wanted to get all of the bodily functions in there

          • Only if you fight it. You’ll wake from a sleeper much more smoothly if you don’t resist. You’ll likely not be put down if you realize when you’re staggered that resistance is futile. And then you can get even by apologizing to me for drunk puking all over yourself and my arms and legs.

            Such a cruel world.

  24. Well, good win. Should get us into the tournament. I’m very excited and looking forward to putting us in a bracket soon. Take into account our women’s team already locked up their auto bid and Selection Sunday/Monday is gonna be a good couple days.

The refs were calling it tight both ways, so I don’t have a huge problem with bias but it was annoying watching the game become a free throw shooting contest. We went on scoring droughts, but looking back it was mostly because we had so many fouls called that our best offensive threats were coming out of the game. Plus we couldn’t get any easy buckets. I don’t think it flies against Cal tomorrow. If we beat Cal, that’s just a cherry on top, but I think the work is done and the goal has been accomplished.

Anyone have a count on Bill Walton’s number of times saying “conference of champions” from tip off to final buzzer? it’s gotta be in the 40’s.

  25. Beavs are in baby!! Payton’s kid and a solid mix of pieces playing together have done it overcoming the prognosticators. Our resume is as good or better than Arizona’s. 29th RPI is sick and 5 Top 50 wins to boot. Team should be a #7 seed IMO but more likely will get a 8 or 9.

Time to make the unexpected run to the Sweet 16 of a lifetime!

    GO BEAVS!!

  26. Big time props to N’Diaye. His interior D was extremely important. Lead was slipping when he went in and finally there was nothing easy underneath for ASS U

  27. GPII only had 10 points but he was phenomenal all night. Did work on the glass and his disruptions defensively were awesome. He was only credited with 4 steals but he had at least 6. Deflected passes, made great rotations and made some great passes offensively. His 2 assists are misleading with how many missed shots on open looks off his passes there were. He was great. Expect another really good night from him against Cal.

A win and Oregon State is a lock. I expect them to play their asses off but they’ll have a tough time winning if Olaf plays like that again. He missed a ton of wide open shots. Cal is a lot better than ASU, he needs to come ready to play and perform like he did against UCLA.

Big G needs way more minutes. He was really good on both ends. He’s too good to sit on the bench for long stretches.

      • Jarmal hasn’t had a good season but the last few games he has played well. If Olaf isn’t knocking down perimeter shots, Jarmal should play the vast majority of the PF minutes. He can get Rabb in foul trouble with how hard he drives in the paint and he’s okay defending the post. Tinkle should have a short leash with Olaf.

        • Partially right…..JR is awfully slow on D and hasn’t shown much effectiveness in guarding anyone bigger than him. He could be effective drawing fouls, but he’s also a below average rebounder. Obviously you’re right regarding Olaf. If he isn’t hitting the treys, he really hurts us

          • Without Tres there’s basically two options at PF. Both players have their issues but at least finally at the end of the season Jarmal is giving the team a little scoring. Ideally, Olaf will knock down some threes but who knows if he does anything. Wayne is pretty limited with what he can do but if Olaf isn’t making shots then Jarmal has to play and Tinkle has to live with his mistakes because he can at least get to the foul line and score a bit where as Olaf is allergic to the paint

        • What do you see in Reid that you think he plays well? He blindly drives to the hoop and throws up a shot – sometimes he is able to get a second chance tip in. He rarely passes once he gets it and when he does it’s a turnover half the time. Overall I feel like he is a huge liability on the court.

  28. That was a pretty ugly game. ASU sucked more than the Beavs were good.

As we saw, if this team could hit free throws, it’ll keep them in games and let them pull away as well.

    Some thoughts –
Olaf – If he doesn’t hit 2 of his first 3, it’s going to be a bad game for him. Needs to cut down on the silly fouls.
Drew – Too many silly fouls. Fouled out pretty quickly.
PJ – Continues his growth each game.
GPII – Needs to take over sometimes. The one play where he drove and split the defenders at the hoop is something we should see more of.

    Overall –
    – So many silly fouls. ASU got into the bonus fast. Lucky ASU didn’t take advantage.
    – Gave up 14 offensive rebounds. If that happens vs Cal, it’ll be a blowout.
    – It was great to see the other guys step up. Guys off the bench shot 52.9%. Shot 78.5% at the line. Can’t ask for anymore.

To beat Cal, they’ll need to dig deep. I think the way they win is to keep pace with Cal and then surge in the last 5 min to win the game. It’ll be better for the Beavs to stalk Cal and then try to lead them wire to wire. With the struggles at the end of the last two games, it’s hard to see the Beavs have a late lead and keep it.

In the end though, this win puts them in the dance even if the lose tomorrow. The only thing that can keep them out is cinderella teams in the other power conferences. And there would have to be a couple too.

  29. Remember at Cal, we only made a run when we went quick & small w D-Bruce and when the POS twins (Olaf-Jarmal) were nowhere to be found

  30. Wayne Tinkle on the Pac-12 network post game report…………….

    “If we’re not in, it’s a travesty”

    He’s not wrong

  31. I’m really happy with the win, and so glad it seems the Beavers will finally get into the NCAA tournament for the first time in forever.

That being said, why the heck did Tinkle think it was a good idea to put Schaaftenar at Center for the final 3 minutes or so? We got carved up inside because of that. I would have taken Big G with four fouls over him any day of the week.

    • They showed GP’s number retired. Does GPII get his number retired as well? He’s only been here 2 years but he’s been amazing and will hopefully lead us back to the tournament for the first time in 26 years.

  32. Nice win although it was much closer than it needed to be. PAC refs are awful. When they missed the obvious over and back on Cal’s second possession I knew it would be a long night.

Hopefully Tinkle French kissed Walton after the game and infected him with whatever super bug he has.

      • Utah? I can see the missed walk on Stevie, but he got fouled against Utah. That one’s not on the refs. In fact, if the refs call the first Utah game the way they did the second, we sweep them this year.

      • He never did get a rules clarification for that (or remember that he asked for one). It used to be that you couldn’t pass into the back court. But over-and-back rules state that the moment you touch the ball is when you establish possession, and where you last touched the floor is where on the court you have possession. So catching it with one foot in the front court then stepping on the mid-line should get a whistle.

    • He waits until the end to propose the simplest answer? I’m surprised he didn’t drop it with some nice danger music.

Schools and coaches are turning over every rock in order to find talent. When a source presents itself, other coaches take notice and flock to it like moths to light. That source gains funding in various ways and improves itself in order to present more and better talent for all sorts of reasons. There does need to be regulation so that coaches who pay the programs involved don’t get a quid pro quo. But I think the conspiracy behind finding talent where other people have started finding talent is a little cynical.

We had assistants who helped form some of the overseas programs in that area. So it’s likely even more simple. Another such assistant got their coach to take a chance on this kid he saw as a teen when he was essentially volunteering his services overseas. That kid pans out and becomes a good or great player and comes with none of the entitlements the hat-party side of recruiting brings. So it’s only natural the head coach decides his assistant is brilliant and decides to go scout the source himself… in the oh so frigid Canaries.

edit: It just occurred to me that one assistant from OSU who did what I described above might be a Minnie assistant now. That would make the conspiracy stupidity even more ridiculous.

  33. Since the Beavs have pretty much clinched a bid, the remaining games are for seeding purposes. It would be nice for the Beavs to stay out of the Dayton games. Mostly because I’m going to try to travel to the tournament games. Don’t want to go to Dayton.

Today’s games – Teams you want to lose to get a better seed
    1. Pitt
    2. Butler or Providence – Doesn’t really matter
    3. Vanderbilt
    4. Seton Hall
    5. Notre Dame
    6. Any team from a major conference who is not projected to be in the tourney or on the bubble.

Teams you want to win – They’ll help the RPI just a little.
    1. Nevada
    2. UC Santa Barbara

  34. Consensus seems to be that we are in the tourney now. If we can assume that to be true, as a fan, how do you want to see the team approach the Cal game? Do we play balls out and try our hardest to keep winning, while risking injury to another key player?
Or would you be ok with more bench production while letting starter only play limited minutes?

    • I think winning needs to become a habit with this team, especially for the younger guys. I think you put your best effort forward every game.

    • Just play loose. You always have to give effort. Not doing so, losing focus, would be a more likely scenario for getting someone hurt. And you want to keep pushing to get better and have more opportunity to continue doing so with game competition.

At this point in the season, you just want to get in the habit of and continue winning.

    • Bury Cal at all costs. It only raises our stock. Although it’s nice to get into the tournament, it would be better for recruiting and such to win a game or two more. Especially if it’s in the tournament, get a higher seed get an easier game to win (arguably).
